IF the tonnage of merchantable iron ore remaining in the Lake Superior district is divided by the average of the annual shipments for the past 20 years, it will be found that this ore supply will be exhausted in approximately 35 years. This computed exhaustion period would be an indication of the future activities of the iron-mining industry if it were not for the fact that merchantable ore is being manufactured from low-grade ore, of which there is an almost inexhaustible supply in the Lake Superior district. It is true that at present only the simplest of these low-grade ores are being concentrated to any considerable extent, but progress is being made with the treatment of the more complex ores, and now, in addition to 20 washing plants on the Mesabi Range, three plants are equipped with jigs for the treatment of ore that cannot be concentrated simply by washing. The latest addition to the ore-treating plants of the Mesabi Range is a magnetic roasting and concentration plant at Cooley, Minn., in which ore that cannot be concentrated either by washing or by jigging is roasted to the magnetic state and concentrated on magnetic separators. This plant is beginning its third season of operation, and while it is too soon to make definite predictions, there are strong indica-tions that this new process may make commercially possible the manu-facture of high-grade, merchantable iron ore from large quantities of low-grade ore now considered worthless. After the iron oxide contained in an ore has been converted to mag-netite, almost any desired grade of concentrate can be produced, using magnetic-concentration equipment of the types now in general use for the concentration of the natural magnetites of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The conversion of hematite (Fe203) to magnetite (Fe304) is easily accomplished by heating the ore to a dull red tempera-ture in a reducing atmosphere. The reaction is slightly endothermic, and while it requires 200 B.t.u. to heat to 900° F. one pound of hematite ore containing 45 per cent Fe, it requires only 100 B.t.u. to convert the oxide into magnetite. THE mining town of Pribram is situated in Central Bohemia, on the western slope of the Heiliger Berg, 30 miles southwest from Prague. Birkenberg, the village in which most of the shafts and ore-dressing establishments are situated, is built on a mountain of the same name. It is about a mile from Pribram, is 1700 feet above the sea, and is surrounded by graywacke rocks of Silurian origin, which are intersected by greenstone dikes, and in the southerly, southeasterly, and southwesterly direction are bounded by granite. The graywacke formations consist on one side of graywacke sandstone and quartzite, and on the other of graywacke slates. These last are separated from the first in the immediate vicinity of the mines by a graywacke seam converted into clay. For many years this so-cal led clay seam (lettenkkluft) was considered as a boundary of the ore deposits in both zones of graywacke. The graywacke formation is divided according to its hardness, structure, texture, and color, into fine, coarse, compact, slaty, whitish-gray, reddish-gray, and black graywacke. The, miner divides the formation into four divisions. The first or lowest division, which is in contact with the granite, consists of a fine-grained dirty gray slate; the -second is a very fine to a very coarse schist, white to reddish-gray in color, and rich in quartz, but containing little mica; the third consists of a slate with a contused cleavage, which has a dirty gray, dark gray, and very often black color and is often graphitic in its composition ; the fourth consists of a fine to coarse-grained graywacke schist, of a grayish-white or reddish-gray color, and rich in quartz. The cleavage in all four divisions strikes from northeast to southwest, and the dip is sometimes northwesterly, sometimes southerly, and often vertical. Greenockite is the only known cadmium mineral of importance. It occurs rather universally, in minor concentrations, as a secondary mineral in sphalerite deposits. The world's cadmium output is obtained through the processing of metallurgical by-products, largely from the treatment of residues from electrolytic zinc, retort zinc and lithopone plants. These sources are supplemented by the processing of fumes from lead and copper smelting operations. The development of modern selective flotation practice in the decade 1920-1930, which permitted the economical mining of complex lead-zinc ores, resulted in significant increases in the quantities of cadmium entering lead smelting systems. Being closely related to zinc as to occurrence, properties and production, most detailed description of cadmium recovery methods are to be found recorded in connection with zinc metallurgy. Other than occasional articles pertaining to particular operational procedures, literature offers but little in the nature of a balanced survey of lead smelter cadmium recovery practices. While many of the basic operations described for the recovery of cadmium from zinc by-products are applicable to the treatment of lead plant products, the inherent problems involved differ widely. In general the cadmium content of related by-products from routine lead smelting operations is present in lower concentrations, exists in a less soluble state and is associated with both a greater quantity and a greater variety of detrimental impurities. To cope with these problems, lead smelter practices are found to follow the general outline: Preparatory Processing 1. Concentration operations 2. Sulphation operations Cadmium Plant Processing 1. Leaching operations 2. Purification operations 3. Sponge precipitation operations 4. Metal recovery operations 5. Refining and casting operations As in the case of related zinc plant operations, cadmium recovery practices at lead smelters are not standardized. They not only vary as to type, but also extent. Depending upon prevailing conditions, lead smelter cadmium operations range from simple concentration campaigns, for the purpose of sufficiently "up-grading" products for shipment elsewhere, to complete processing steps for the production of refined metal. Preparatory Processing The cadmium content of lead smelter receipts is low and, as a rule, proportionate to the zinc content; the usual range of cadmium contained being of the order of 0.01-0.05 pct. Were it not for the low boiling point of cadmium, such small concentrations would, no doubt, be lost in the large tonnages of slag, metal and other smelter end products. However, the ready volatility of cadmium and its compounds at prevailing lead smelting temperatures results in its concentration in fractional portions of fume collected. This collected fume comprises a circulating load within the smelter system. Thus, the cadmium content of blast furnace fume* increases with each successive circulation until an equilibrium value is reached when the sum of the cadmium losses, due to handling and in slag, waste gases and other end products, becomes equal to the intake as ore. With ore receipts averaging, say 0.03 pct cadmium, the concentration value obtainable, through fume circulation in a routine manner, approaches 10-12 pct. In such operations, cadmium concentrations in blast furnace fume of from 3-5 pct are readily .attainable. However, the concentration gain beyond this range, with each additional circulation, is progressively decreased as a result of mounting losses occurring through handling and in end products. Therefore, to avoid excessive cadmium loss and to enhance the ultimate concentration anttainable, it is customary practice to isolate blast furnace fume at some intermediate cadmium content for special concentration procedure. The most common type cadmium concentration "campaign" involves special smelting operations wherein a relatively high portion of blast furnace fume at 3—6 pct cadmium is incorporated into the sinter charge. THIS paper deals with the results obtained and the techniques employed in determining: I. Liquidus and solidus temperatures of the HH and HT type heat-resistant alloys. † 2. The relation of true temperatures (thermocouple) to apparent temperatures (optical pyrometer) for the molten HH and HT type alloys. This work was the outgrowth of needing to know something definite about these temperatures in order to study the effect of pouring temperatures, shake-out times, and heat-treatments on the properties of some heat-resistant alloys. The information developed is thought to be of interest to industry for guidance in foundry practices and the industrial heat applications of the alloys. This paper is based upon work that has been done for the Alloy Casting Institute at Battelle Memorial Institute. LIQUIDUS AND SOLIDUS TEMPERATURES OF HH AND HT TYPE ALLOYS Experimental Procedures Temperature-time curves were obtained during the cooling and solidification of several HH and HT type alloys. The metal was melted in an Ajax high-frequency induction furnace and poured into a coresand mold for cooling. The temperature measurements were obtained by means of a platinum, platinumrhodium thermocouple contained within a fused silica sheath, which was extended through the side wall of the dry core-sand mold to a point at about the center of the mold cavity, which was 3 in. in diameter by 5 in. deep. The cold junction of the thermocouple was kept in an ice bottle, and the temperature was recorded automatically on a direct-reading potentiometer recorder. Through a switching arrangement, the temperature recorded was checked occasionally with a portable Leeds and Northrup potentiometer indicator. Less than a 5°F. variation in the two instruments was always found. This is within the limit of accuracy of readings. The thermocouple used was checked for accuracy against a standard couple, both before use on this work and after completion of the work, by the instrument laboratory. Temperature-time Cooling Curves Fig. I is an enlarged reproduction of a part of one of the cooling curves over the temperature range of 2600° to 2200°F. for an alloy of the HT type with 0.45 per cent carbon, 16 per cent chromium, and 36 per cent nickel. This is a typically shaped cooling curve as obtained for the alloys. It will be noted that two temperatures are shown on Fig. r for the liquidus temperature. The Kunigin-Marien-Hiitte is the only works in Germany where the Bessemer process is carried on by the direct method. The Besserner plant there, is arranged after the true English type, and the only resemblance to the Swedish mode of 'procedure is the dispensing with the use of spiegeleisen at the end of the "blow." In a new department of the establishment, started within three years, each of the converters is turned by means of a very neat and compact reversible engine, the steel shaft of which is an endless screw, which turns against the oblique cogs of a large wheel attached to the shaft of the vessel. An advantage which this arrangement possesses over the ordinary English hydraulic arrangement, is the fact that the endless screw suffices to turn the vessel, in either direction, any number of complete revolutions; while even the latest American improvements, so clearly explained to us by Mr. Holley at the opening session of this meeting, do not secure even one complete revolution without changing the angle of inclination of the hydraulic piston. In the endless screw arrangement, there being no limit to the working of the motor in either direction (no return-stroke necessary), the vessel can always, unless outside reasons demand the contrary, be turned around to any desired position by the shortest cut, whether backwards or forwards. Also, the diameter of the cogwheel attached to the vessel can be made sufficiently great to avoid all unevenness of motion. In the old department the motive-power still continues to be hydraulic. If reports be true, the new department produces spiegelized steel, for the manufacture of all-steel rails. But the old department is still, as from the beginning, devoted to the production by the direct method of steel for steel-headed rails. The most remarkable fact connected with this direct steel is the ease with which it welds to the iron 'of the rail-packets, although no borax or other fluxing agent is used to facilitate the welding. It is very rarely that an exception occurs, and an ingot or a charge is discarded by the rail-mill. The only way in which the difficult problems of classification of coal for the manufacture of by-product coke can be solved is to analyze them by the use of scientific data. It is very easy to adopt classifications for coal for the manufacture of by-product coke along certain lines; we can easily say that for a certain class of metallurgical operation coke made from bituminous coal must not contain more than so much sulfur or more than so much ash and should yield certain returns in the by-products, tar, ammonia, benzol, gas, etc. Those points we are fairly clear on and I think it is hardly worth while to discuss them because I presume that they are familiar to most of us who have any occasion either to make coke or to use it. But there is a field in the manufacture of coke which we know very little about. For example, we are operating a plant on a certain mixture of coal. Suddenly our blast-furnace man or the user of the coke tells us the coke is not as good as it was before. The coke is analyzed and the coal is analyzed. Everything seems to be about the same as it was— the ash is the same, there is no more sulfur, and so on—but the coke, for the use to which it is put, particularly in the blast furnace, is wrong. What happens? The management decide to try a slightly different coal mixture. They do not necessarily raise the total hydrocarbons, the volatile matter in the mixture, nor change the sulfur or the ash, but they do make a change which improves the value of the coke for metallurgical use. The reason for this difficulty, as I see it, is the " combustibility " of the coke—I hesitate to use the word, but it is the best one I have available. Combustibility of Coke We know now that the combustibility of coke is a very vital point in many metallurgical processes and I think one of the most notable instances of the proof of this is the experience of the Carnegie Steel Co. in the production of coke at its Clairton plant. Since the end of World War 11 interest has been increasing in the use of shaped charges in the mining industry and in other industries using explosives for blasting purposes. Shaped charges employ the principle known as the "Munroe effect," which was discovered by Charles E. Munroe more than 50 years ago (in 1888). Details of their design have been explained elsewhere.1,2,3 Fig I shows the essential features of design of two types of shaped charges (with conical and hemispherical cavities) and a schematic sketch of their action upon detonation. The following discussion deals with the behavior of the metal in the cavity liners when they are subjected to intense Pressures exerted when the explosive charge is detonated. Among the conclusions reached in research on shaped explosive charges, the following have been established conceming cavity liners:1'2 I. The optimum wall thickness of a conical cavity liner is dependent upon the apex angle of the cone as well as On the base diameter of the charge. Acute apex angles require thinner walls for optimum perfonnance and more obtuse angles require thicker walls for the same base diameter. '. Cones were more effective in forming a penetrating jet when the walls were tapered; that is, the thickness of the wall of the cone increased from the apex down. 3. The physical and mechanical properties of metals have a marked effect upon their performance as cavity-liner material. Boiling point, ductility, malleability, ten-sile strength, and hardness are among the properties that influence the effectiveness of a metal used as a cavity liner. Lead, for example, makes a wide, flat crater in steel plates. Aluminum makes a deeper crater than lead, and an aluminum alloy having a high tensile strength makes a deeper hole, but slightly smaller in diameter. Cast iron makes a deep, narrow hole. These findings, together with the following analysis under Metallographic Survey of slug, offer solutions to many of the problems involved in solving the mechanism of the formation of Munroe jets. It has been fairly well established that cavity liners collapse in a manner similar to that indicated in Fig 2, Conical liners are known to collapse upon themselves while hemispherical liners are believed to turn inside out in the process of jet formation. The first has been definitely proved by recovery of collapsed portions of cones, while liners from partly detonated charges show that hemispheres may turn inside out. Fig 3 shows a sketch of a recovered slug from a 6-in. shaped charge using a 45" cone made of cast iron. (This size of charge drilled holes up to 3 ft in depth in solid granodiorite.)

Patentiometric model data have been obtained to estimate the effect of vertical fractures on the areas swept after breakthrough in water flooding and miscible displacement programs such as gas cycling where the mobility is near one, The data are presented for the case of the fire-spot pattern in which the cemer well is fractured various lengths and orientations, the data indicate that for 10-acre spacing, fractures extetidirrg over 1300 ft in either directior1 from the fractured well may re.srrlt in reductions in sweep efficiencics from 72 to approximately 34 per cent. However. the area swept after break through may be quite largr and only 10 or 12 per cent 1ess than would be obtained if the reservoir were trot fractured. For the specific case when the volume of fluid injected is equivalent to 100 per cent of the pattern vol-unie, the swent area may vary from 80 to 88 per cent, depending on the lenght of the fracture. The former value is that which occurs when the break through or sweep efficiency was orrly 34 per cent and the latter figrrre of 88 per cent is that which is obtained if the reservoir were unfrac-ttm'd. It is pointed out that although the sweep efficiency may he very low in vertically fractured five-spot patterrz.s, the area swept at low water-oil ratios may be only 5 to 10 per cent less than those achieved if the reservoir were unfractured. INTRODUCTION Since the initiation of commercial reservoir fracturing techniques it has been desirable to determine the effect of fractures on the areas swept after breakthrough. Most water flooding or gas cycling projects are continued for substantial periods after the brcakthrough of the injected fluid. Although the sweep efficiency serves as one criterion for rating various flooding patterns. the area swept after breakthrough for various water-oil ratios or percentage wet gas, if cycling. is of perhaps more importance than the sweep efficiency alone. Sweep efficiency data on the vertically fractured five-spot have been presented3. Previous work on the line-drive pattern has shown the effect of vertical fractures on the area swept after breakthrough for the case in which the distance between injection and producing wells divided by the distance between adjacent input wells was equivalent to 1.5 (see lief. 2). The data indicated that for the line-drive pattern it may be desirable to flood or cycle substantially perpendicular to the fractures in order to achieve the greatest recovery for the smallest volume of fluid injected. For this study the center well of a five-spot is assumed as the fractured well. All fractures were assumed to originate at this well and extend into the reservoir for various distances and orientations. All the fractures are straight and are of large permeability compared to the matrix proper. These data are presented to aid the engineer in estimating fractured five-spot pattern performance. ANALOGY The potentiometric model was used in making this study. The model used was 20 20 in. by approximately 1-in. deep. For certain portions of the study one corner of this model was considered to be an injection well and the opposite corner a production well. To simulate vertical fractures a copper sheet was soldered to the wire well and made to conform to the desired length and orientation. In other studies the same model was used except that the four corners of the model might be considered as the corner wells of a five-spot pattern and a fifth well was placed in the center of the model. The well placed in the center of the model was fractured. The total fracture length is L and the well spacing. d. The complimentary fracture angles will be obvious from Figs. 3 and 4. The data obtained on the potentio-metric model assumes the pay to be uniform and homogeneous, the mobility ratio is one, steady-state conditions exist and gravity effects arc neglected. The permeability of the fractures is very great compared to that of the matrix proper. The po-tentiometric model has been used widely both in water flooding and gas cycling projects, and may be used for miscible displacement; how-ever. it is believed that the poten-tiometric model data are more properly applicable to gas cycling than water flooding because the model as-

WITH Thomas G. Fear, chairman of the Coal Di- vision, presiding, the coal miners opened their program Monday morning with a general session at which three papers were presented. The first, "The Classification of Coal for Stationary Steam Generation," was presented by the author, Thomas W. Harris, Jr. In discussion, H. T. Coates inquired if it would not be possible to pick out a geographical coal section, certain seams or a group of mines, which would rank high in a desired feature or features, perhaps giving different -- - local sections or different mines something to designate a rating ("good," "fair," and "poor"). This might be done relative to anti-clinkering, free-burning, ,anti-slagging, smokelessness, friability and grindability. These might be listed or arranged on a map or diagram so that the prospective customer could find a coal that rated particularly high in desired characteristics. C. A. Reed pointed out, in part, that coal producers and sellers have found a bad but necessarily present condition in the country, especially with the smaller user of coal. This is entirely due to the fact that the employer expects his purchasing representative to be a genius and have expert knowledge of everything he buys, coal included, whereas in the larger plants he has and uses expert knowledge from the active organization when necessary. J. B. Morrow said that size rating was important in classifying coal and he emphasized that it was impossible to come to a definite basis on analysis alone.

In laboratory research on the behavior of oil, gas and water in porous materials, no direct method has been devised to measure saturation without disturbing the flow. Indirect methods involving various forms of radiation have been developed for measuring one or two components. The X-ray absorption method for two components has been described previously1-3. The possibility of three component measurement has also been mentioned1. Since two component measurement still requires considerable care to insure accuracy, the fact that three components can be measured satisfactorily is not generally appreciated. The fraction of the energy of an X-ray beam of one wavelength transmitted through a material is given by the transmission factor. in which 1 is the beam's path length through the fluid. p is the fluid density, and 1,. is its mass absorption coefficient. Eq. 1 implies that all parts of the beam pass through equal amounts of the fluid. Practical applications are, therefore, limited to systems in which the fluid is distributed so that I varies negligibly over the cross-section of the beam. Typical variations of the transmission factor with X-ray tube potential arc shown in Fig. 2 from which experimental points have been omitted for clarity. The X-ray absorption of low pressure gases in a core is practically zero so it cannot he distinguished from that a vacuum by instruments that will differentiate between liquids. The transmission factor of a gas in a core is. therefore, unity. Consequently, the saturation of only one gaseous component can be found. If two fluids completely fill a core, their two saturations add to unity and, therefore, only one value of the transmission factor, T, is needed to determine both of them. When two liquids do not completely fill the core, their saturations do not add to unity and transmission factors at two wavelengths must be measured. At one of these wavelengths, 7 for one liquid must be different from T or the other liquid. The change of T for one liquid us the wavelength is changed between the two values must be different from the corresponding change of T in the other liquid. The two values of fluid saturation will also give that of the gas because the three saturations must add to unity. In Fig. 2 it can be seen that there are many large differences of T between various oil solutions and water solutions at any one potential, and between potentials for any one solution. Consequently, conditions for optimum accuracy of measurement of the saturations of a gas and two liquids can be chosen. Once the operating potentials have been selected, however. it is more convenient to cross plot the data from Fig. 2 on transmission factor-solution concentration coordinates for the chosen potentials, as shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 3 was used to plan the experimental procedure for Core N-38-1. Since the voltage control at 45 kv was good, the slopes of the curves in Fig. 2 at this potential would cause little error. At low potentials, however, the voltage control was not good, so 33 kv was chosen because the small slopes of the curves made voltage control less critical. The lowest strength beam that could be measured reasonably at 33 kv corresponded to a minimum T factor of 0.385. Fig. 3 shows that both 4.80 weight per cent of cadmium chloride in water and 24.0 per cent of iodobenzene in crystal oil had this T value, and, consequently, were indistinguishable to the X-rays at 33 kv. Thus, at 33 kv, the liquid saturation was given by the same curve regardless of the relative amounts of oil and water solutions present. This simple calibration curve from which the gas and liquid saturation can be read, is shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 3 also shows that at 45 kv, T for the aqueous solution is 0.610. and that T for the oil solution is 0.220. These values were transferred to Fig. 4 to give the triangular calibration plot from which the brine and oil saturations can be found, after the gas saturation has been determined at 33 kv.

Mineral raw materials, because they are essential to our industrial prosperity and military strength, must be made available in substantial quantities. regardless of cost. Variations in the cost of procuring minerals, as compared with the cost of obtaining other commodities, and changes in the cost of production of different minerals relative to one another, will naturally influence the quantities of a given mineral item that can be marketed readily. However, in the last analysis, the cost of winning minerals from the ground usually constitutes only a small fraction of the value of the end-use products and services derived from them. The miner's share of the cost of a typewriter, telephone circuit, or even a modem office building, is almost insignificant. Far more important to the ultimate consumer, therefore, than any minor saving in cost is the assurance of ample supplies of the minerals needed to aliment our expanding economy. To create a successful metal mining operation involves ( 1 ) the discovery and systematic development of a mineral deposit, (2) extraction of the ore, (3) the mechanical and metallurgical processing to eliminate worth- less or harmful impurities, and (4) the profitable disposal of the product. The first step of the technological process belongs chiefly in the realm of the geologist, the second is a mining engineer's job, the third is mainly up to the millmen and extractive metallurgists; whereas the fourth and equally important step poses a commercial problem that has aspects in common with the marketing of other products. Ore finding is far from being an exact science. There is no mathematical criterion for evaluating the efficiency of prospecting and exploration. Lady Luck shares the honors or assumes part of the blame along with the prospector and geologist. Marketing like- wise involves factors that seemingly defy engineering analysis. PRIOR to 1936, the Ontario Refining Co. received all incoming blister copper from The International Nickel Company's smelter in the usual form of 460-lb. cakes, or slabs. These were received in open cars in lots of 250 pieces. At the refinery the cakes were unloaded onto narrow-gauge cars, for convenient handling and pickup by charging cranes. In March 1936, an investigation was started on the feasibility of trans-ferring converter copper in the molten state from the smelter to the refinery anode furnaces, a distance of 114 miles. Although common in steel practice, the transportation of blister copper in this form had not previously been attempted and a preliminary study of the various factors involved was therefore necessary. For this purpose, a series of experiments was made in which molten copper, removed at different stages during the furnace cycle, was held in a small portable holding furnace. This vessel was essentially a refractory-lined steel cylinder provided with ports for filling and emptying, heated by an oil burner. Dimensions of the steel shell were 3 ft. 10 in. diameter by 7 ft. 3 in. long, and thickness of refractories depended oil the design and combination used for the particular experiment. The vessel was filled with approximately 2 ½ tons of copper at a predetermined temperature, the lining having been preheated to a definite point by means of an oil burner. All openings were well luted and temperature readings were made every 15 min. by means of an immersion-type thermocouple. In this manner the rate of heat loss resulting with different refractory design could be developed. The ratio of exterior surface to weight of metal was taken into consideration in comparing the experimental results with what might be expected for a full-sized unit, and observations were also made on type and degree of slag accretion. It was not possible to get as much information on this latter point as desirable, but all evidence showed that the problem would be control of slag build-up rather than attack oil refractories.

Almost everyone agrees that coal and oil shale are the only fossil fuel resources in which the United States is self-sufficient. Of the two, only coal has a technology sufficiently developed to be of intermediate term benefit. Since it takes at least 20 years to bring advanced technology into practice, it seems logical that the major focus on energy developments should be aimed at coal. Meanwhile, we need to trade-off between actions to meet our immediate needs and the various political regulations and social demands that are disrupting the coal industry and the industries dependent upon it. The largest single user of coal is the electric power generation industry. Over 300 million tons of coal are presently being consumed each year. In view of the 5-to 7-years lead time to bring in a base-load fossil-fuel fired generating station, our requirements for double this tonnage in 1980 are already well forecast; that is, if the coal companies are allowed to mine and the utilities are allowed to burn the coal.

ANYONE doubting prosperity in the mining industry should visit the Kootenays of British Columbia where the West Kootenay Power & Light Co. is kept busy running new power lines and connecting mines and mills with lines already in service. Quoting from an inspired statement "The four hydro-electric plants of the West Kootenay Power & Light Co. on Kootenay River have been in continuous operation." At the recent 35th annual meeting of the Eastern' British Columbia Boards of Trade held in Nelson, a two-day session indicated unusual activity. The following information was obtained through personal contact, through the press, and by hearsay. Much of it has been checked and proved accurate. Reversing the order of the flowsheet. Secretary J. Copper is extracted from the Chuquicamata oxide ore by a hydro-metallurgical process. The ore is crushed to 3/8-in. sizing, and leached with a sulfuric acid electrolyte. Chlorine is precipitated. and the ferric iron reduced in the enriched electrolyte, after which the copper is recovered by electrolysis with insoluble Chilex and lead-antimony anodes, the spent electrolyte being returned to leaching. Cathodes are melted and refined in market furnaces and cast into commercial wire-bar and cake shapes. Sulfuric acid for the process is supplied by the brochantite in the ore. Water for washing the ore is advanced through the solution system and finally after cutting by electrolysis to from 6 to 16.0 grams per liter is completely stripped by the cuprous chloride method and run to waste. The cuprous chloride so obtained plus that resulting from precipitation of chlorine from strong solution is dissolved in ferrous chloride brine and the copper cemented on scrap iron. The cement so obtained is in part used to reduce ferric iron in electrolyte, and as it is of exceptional purity is also furnace refined and cast into an exceptional quality of fire-refined copper. Fig. 1 is flow sheet of the operation. The reduction plant is composed of seven divisions as follows: (1) crushing, (2) leaching, (3) tailings disposal, (4) dechloridizing, (5) sulfur dioxide treatment, (6) electrolytic tank house, (7) smelting and melting. A brief description of each of these divisions will be given. Crushing Ore that is frequently blocky and up to 5 ft. in section is crushed in four stages to 3/8-in. mesh. The first stage of crushing is called primary and the next three stages are known as secondary crushing. The first stage is accomplished with two 60-in. Superior McCully gyratory breakers by which the ore is broken to 9 in. The second coarse gyratory breakers crush the ore to 3-in. sizing. There are seven No. 10 McCully gyratories in this service, for one of which recently has been substituted a No. 7 cone crusher. The third and fourth stages of crushing are accomplished by fifty 48-in. disk crushers. In the third stage 14 disk crushers break the ore to 1 in., and in the last stage 36 disk crushers turn out the final product of 0.371-in. sizing. Reference to the flow sheets of Figs. 2 and 3

A graphical solution is presented for the equation v =v &-cU where vb is the volume of liquid b of density 6 that must be added to liquid a of volume va and density d, in order to obtain a heavy-liquid solution of preferred density dm for mineral fractionation. The equation is valid only for pairs of liquids whose volumes are additive, but empirical density-composi-tion data show that this condition is met over wide compositional ranges by all of the heavy solutions that are commonly used for mineralogical analysis. The chart is a nomograph which consists of two horizontal volume scales ad a vertical density scale arranged so that one volume scale occurs on each side of the density scale. All the scales are linear. For two liquids of density d, and &, respectively, each volume scale has an independent level on the density scale, ad the graphical solution for vb on the nomograph is obtained by construction of one straight line. The chart can be prepared easily to cover any density range with any desired accuracy by proper selection of the scales. Heavy-liquid separation of particulate samples is an indispensable analytical procedure in the mineralogical and mineral-process ing laboratory. Heavy liquids may be used 1) to isolate specific minerals in the form of high purity products or to fractionate samples into several products with density limits for petrographic, chemical, spectrographic, and X-ray diffraction analysis,'-' 2) to determine the density of minerals,'-l4 3) to facilitate the recognition and identification of optically similar associated minerals,15 and 4) to determine quantitatively the degree of liberation of ore minerals in ores and mill products at various limiting sizes." The preparation and recovery of heavy liquids suitable for mineralogical analysis are discussed fully in the literature and operational procedures and special equipment for heavy-liquid separation are described in numerous references.'747837' 13,18,25-42 Useful tabulations of heavy liquids for mineralogical analysis are given by Tickell, Mil-ner,' Twenhofel and Tyler,' and Lange and a very complete up-to-date list of minerals arranged according to increasing density is given by Mursky and Thompson. USEFULNESS OF THE DENSITY CHART For any particulate sample, the limiting densities selected for its fractionation by means of heavy- liquid separation depend on the respective densities of the constituent minerals and the specific objectives of the separation. In many instances, the densities of readily available and practicable heavy liquids do not coincide with those that are required, and suitable liquids of the proper density are obtained by dilution with miscible liquids. In the general case, one may wish to mix either a pure liquid (A) or a solution of two miscible liquids (AP,,) of known density with either a pure liquid (B) or a different solution of the two miscible liquids (A,B,) of higher or lower density in order to obtain a final liquid of the preferred density. In conventional practice, the latter is reached empirically by trial-and-error addition of increments of one liquid to the other. The density of the final solution may be determined either by accurately weighing a known volume of the final liquid,'' 532;4;40, or by means of I)a Westphal balance, 2)a hydrometer, a refractometer in the case of binary liquid systems for which density-refractive index data are available,15 4) natural or synthetic .indicators of known density, a pycno-meter. Like all trial-and-error methods, these procedures are time consuming and many require special equipment which may not be available, The purpose of this paper is to show that the volume of a liquid of known density which is to be added to another liquid of known volume and density in order to obtain a solution with an intermediate preferred density may be determined rapidly and accurately by a graphical method provided that the two liquids form ideal or quasi-ideal solutions whose volumes are additive. It is safe to say that of all the different materials that go to make up electrical machinery, iron is the most important. Upon its magnetic and electrical quality depends not only the efficiency of the machine but, to a very large extent, the cost. Aside from the mechanical strength, there are three characteristics of iron that are of importance in this connection, viz., magnetic hysteresis, electrical resistance, and magnetic permeability. In the homopolar machine, where the magnetic flux is unidirectional, permeability is the only important factor, but in all other machines the flux is reversed in one or more parts and causes losses due to hysteresis and eddy currents. The eddy-current loss depends largely upon the electrical resistance of the iron; the higher the resistance the lower the loss, under otherwise identical conditions. These hysteresis and eddy-current losses cause heating of the machine, and as they depend upon the magnetic density in the iron, this density must be regulated so that the heating shall not be excessive. If the hysteresis and eddy-current losses and the permeability of the magnetic circuit will permit an increase in the magnetic density, or, in other words, a decrease in the amount of iron, this in turn will mean a decrease in the amount of copper needed, with a consequent decrease in the copper loss. It is thus seen that, indirectly as well as directly, the above characteristics have an important bearing on both the efficiency and the cost of electrical machinery. In general, it may be said that iron for electrical machinery should have the following characteristics: (1) low hysteresis loss, (2) high electrical resistance, and (3) high permeability. These are the characteristics that investigators have been striving to attain since electrical machinery first came into use. Until the beginning of the present century, Swedish charcoal iron was regarded as the best grade of iron for magnetic purposes, and even now it ranks high among the various grades used. About that time Sir Robert Hadfield1 produced a number of iron alloys that revolution-
