Silicon carbide coated boron fiber (Borsic) reinforced aluminum composites were made which exhibit strength and modulus values predicted by the rule of mixtures. A successful technique for fabricating these composites consists of plasma spraying of monolayer filament reinforced tapes and subsequent diffusion bonding of these tapes into composites. The elastic properties of the composites were given by the rule of mixtures in reinforced directions. (The modulus parallel to the fibers was 32 x 106 psi for a composite with 50 pct by volume fibers. The other elastic properties for a composite with 50 pct fiber were transverse modulus = 14 to 16 X 10 psi, G = 9.5 x 106psi, and v,, = 0.23. Tensile strengths of over 190,000 psi were measured for the composites with 50 pct fiber and the average strength for these composites was 162,000 psi. These same composites had interlaminar shear strengths of 12 to 15,000 psi. Multidirectionally reinforced composites demonstrated the same reinforcement efficiency in strength and modulus as the uni-directimlly reinforced composites. Comrpessive strengths of composites with 50 pct by volume fiber were found to be greater than 250,000 psi. STRUCTURAL filamentary composite materials are being considered for use where high strength, high modulus, and lightweight materials are required. Metal matrix composites have been considered for use at temperatures ranging from cryogenic (aluminum stainless steel) to 6000°F (plasma sprayed tungsten plus tungsten fiber) and other requirements have been similarly diverse. Metal matrix composites offer high modulus and high strength in unreinforced directions, the ability to be joined by brazing or welding, and greater fracture toughness compared with the more easily fabricated resin matrix composites. This paper deals with the mechanical properties of aluminum boron composites, a system which is being considered for applications where lightweight, high modulus, and high strength are required at temperatures including those above the normal operating temperatures of resin composites. The boron fiber used in this investigation had an average room temperature strength of greater than 400,000 psi, a modulus of 58 x 106 psi, and a density of 0.09 lb per cu in. (2.6 g per cu cm).' The fiber used in the composites had a coating of silicon carbide to retard degrading reactions with the matrix at elevated temperatures. The coated fiber, which is sold commercially as Borsic: has been reported to have excellent resistance to degradation at temperatures up to 600°C in air and in aluminum2 and the same mechanical properties as the standard bare boron fiber. Fabrication of Composites. The composites were diffusion bonded from plasma sprayed monolayer tapes. These tapes were fabricated on a substrate of aluminum alloy foil which is incorporated in the composite matrix. The technique consists of winding a layer of fiber on the foil, and plasma spraying the balance of the matrix alloy over the windings which bonds all of the components together. Advantages of this process include the ability to achieve good fiber spacing, Fig. 1, the formation of a good bond between fiber and matrix (achieved during the plasma spraying), and the adaptability of the process for forming large and complex parts. This is particularly true when used with brazing foil backing which alloys low pressure bonding of the structural shape. PROPERTY EVALUATION TECHNIQUES Tensile test specimens, 5 to 7 in. long with a reduced gage section and ,030 to ,040 in. thick, were cut from composite sheets with a diamond saw. The gage section was .200 in. wide, while the gripped section was .240 in. wide and over 2 in. long in each grip. The standard gage length used was 1 in., however, transverse specimens (i.e., specimens with the fibers oriented 90 deg to the loading axis) were tested without a reduced section. Twelve specimens were also made with a 3-in. gage length but no significant effect of gage length was measured. The tensile test specimens were mounted in a fixture and aligned in friction grips using a 10X microscope. Unbonded foil doublers (0.010-in.-thick aluminum) were used to insure firm gripping with a minimum of damage to the fibers. The test specimens were transferred to the testing machine in a rigid fixture and mounted in the self aligning loading train. METALLURGISTS are making use of the stereographic projection to a steadily increasing extent. In the last five years no less than 20 papers in American metallurgical journals alone have employed the stereographic projection; recent books on physical metallurgy, plastic deformation, X-rays and their applications, and crystal structure use it. Mineralogists have used the stereographic projection for many years in the description of symmetry classes and crystal planes, for it presents an accurate, easily understood plot of any angular relations in crystals with all unessential features eliminated (such as the accidentally deter-mined size and shape of crystal faces). In metallography and physical metallurgy the projection is much used for the analysis of markings appearing on polished grains: slip lines, twins, cracks, structures formed by precipitation, magnetic-powder patterns, etch pits, etc. Data from certain types of X-ray photograms are most conveniently analyzed by its use, particularly those for determining the orientation of single crystals or the preferred orientation of grains in an aggregate. Calculations of how to tilt or cut a crystal parallel to a certain crystallographic plane or to reflect X-rays from a certain plane are rapidly carried out. It has been adopted almost universally to the exclusion of other methods by those studying the deformation of metallic crystals, save where the accu-racy required is greater than a few tenths of a degree. Any directional property in a crystal or polycrystalline material can be shown on a stereo-graphic projection; for example, the modulus of elasticity, yield point, etc. It has been repeatedly called to our attention that there is need of all elementary explanation of the principles and methods of stereographic projection, covering all the, common applications in the field of metal-lography and physical metallurgy. The following contribution is an attempt to fill this need. The description of each method is supplemented with references to publications in which the method has been used. The production of oil is accomplished as a result of its displacement from the reservoir by either gas or water, and the amount of oil recovery is limited by the extent to which the displacing gas or water accumulates. This paper describes the mechanism by which the displacement is effected and the advantages of water over gas as a displacing agent. In the light of the results of experimental observations of the flow of mixtures of oil and/or gas and/or water through sands, certain conclusions are drawn relative to the changing character of the displacement as depletion proceeds, and on the effects of the properties of the fluids and of producing conditions on the ultimate oil recovery. Introduction Crude oil has no inherent ability to expel itself from the pores of the reservoir rocks in which it is found; rather, it must be forcibly ejected or displaced by the accumulation of other fluids. Accordingly, a knowledge of the mechanism by which one fluid is displaced by another is essential to an understanding of the fundamental process by which oil is recovered. The displacing fluids normally available are gas and water, either or both of which may exist originally associated with the oil in a potentially usable form or may be supplied to the reservoir from external sources. Gas is present in most oil reservoirs. If the quantity is relatively small, it may exist originally completely dissolved in the oil, but if the quantity exceeds that which may be held in solution by the oil at the prevailing pressure, the excess will be found in the free state. Most reservoir sands appear to contain some water,l and in the majority of fields the oil is trapped in the structure and held over water. In certain conditions the entrapping water may advance into the oil zone and displace the oil therefrom. This paper describes in a qualitative manner some of the characteristics of the displacement of oil by either gas or water, with an attempt to elucidate somewhat the mechanism by which such displacement is effected. Role of Dissolved Gas When the pressure on an oil containing dissolved gas is reduced to the saturation or bubble-point pressure, gas escapes from solution and expands, imparting to the oil-gas mixture a high degree of expansibility and causing it to flow in the direction of reduced pressure. This expansibility has frequently been attributed to the oil; closer analysis, however, reveals that as gas escapes from solution the oil phase actually. contracts. Hence, it is the accumulation and expansion of the liberated gas that supplies the propelling force for the oil. It has been shown experimentally2-5 that within certain limits a sand containing oil, gas and water will permit the simultaneous flow of all three; the readiness with which they may flow depends upon the characteristics of the sand, of each of the fluids, and upon the relative amounts of the fluids in the sand. A DETAILED description of the many variations in iron mining and transportation practice in Minnesota would require much space. Since a fairly detailed description of the practices then in use was published in the guidebook issued in connection with the meeting of the Institute on the iron ranges in I920, and subsequent developments have been described by E. E. Hunner,1 M. H. Barber,2 and A. E. Anderson, J. M. Riddell and G. J. Holt,3 it will not be necessary here to do more than review the highlights of current practice. Details on any points of interest can be obtained through correspondence with the operators involved. [T] The iron ores of Minnesota, which have been formed through enrichment of the iron formation in which they occur, largely by the removal of silica, are usually covered by a blanket of glacial drift known locally as "surface." Surface material, including sand, clay, hardpan and boulders, makes up the greater portion of the stripping in open-pit operations. In some instances, stripping also includes taconite and "paint rock," directly below the surface material and overlying the ore. Taconite is the iron formation, a ferruginous chert with interbedded slate layers. "Paint rock" is a local term for oxidized slate layers interbedded in the iron formation, high in phosphorus, alumina and moisture. The iron ores fall into two classes: (I) direct shipping (merchantable ores or ores requiring no treatment except possibly crushing or screening to make an acceptable sized product), and (2) ores requiring beneficiation (such as sintering, drying, washing, jigging, high-density treatment, or magnetic separation in the case of magnetite). The Mesabi Range produces chiefly soft Bessemer and non-Bessemer ores. The Cuyuna Range produces mainly low-manganese brown ore and high-manganese black ores, with some iron ore. The Vermilion Range yields mainly Besse¬mer and non-Bessemer iron ore, with some hard or lump ore that finds use in the open hearth. Open-pit mining is limited to the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges but underground mining is done on all three. The choice of mining methods is determined by the relative economics of overburden¬-removal and shaft-mining costs. STRIPPING PRACTICE Common practice has been to remove the bulk of the overburden during the winter season and to mine during the summer. In the present emergency many operators are forced to forego the economies attained by year-round utilization of equipment and to equip for, and carry on, stripping and mining simultaneously. In the normal years or lean years to come, most properties probably will be over-equipped and high depreciation charges will have to be absorbed.

Of the important phenomenon of the hardening of steel, Professor Sauveurl says: It would seem as if the methods used to date for the elucidation of this complex problem have yielded all they are capable of yielding and that further straining of these methods will only serve to confuse the issue, the point having been reached when this juggling, no matter how skilfully done, with allotropy, solid solutions, and strains is causing weariness without advancing the solution of the problem. The tendency of late has been to abandon the safer road of experimental facts and to enter the maze of excessive speculations, in which there is great danger of some becoming hopelessly lost. The conclusion seems warranted that new avenues of approach must be found if we are to obtain a correct answer to this apparent enigma. With some degree of fitness we may say this of other problems. It seems likely that one of the new avenues of approach to many metallo-graphic problems is the study of crystal structure, or more accurately, the atomic arrangement, by means of the x-ray spectrometer. The crystal structure of some materials has been carefully worked out by the mineralogist, but his methods are, in general, unsuited to commercial metals and a method that yields even better information is at hand as the result of work on the diffraction of x-rays by Laue and the Braggs2 and later by HullI3 St. John, and others. It should be understood that the contour of free crystals, which is the subject of measurements by the crystallographer, is the result of the atomic structure and, in general, bears a simple and obvious relation to it. The use of the x-ray spectrometer4 has been described frequently, so the procedure will not be given here.

This report deals with a study of the effects of extreme hydrostatic pressure on a polycrystalline material which exhibits a high degree of elastic anisotropy. Metallographically prepared polycrystalline bismuth samples were subjected to pressure levels up to 20,000 atm in a piston type gas-liquid system. The observed structural changes consisted of deformation localized along the grain boundaries, which appears to be a boundary migration phenomena, and widespread slip and cross slip. Subsequent deformation is progressive with increased pressure, and is substantially different in type from the deformation characteristic of uniaxial compression. A large amount of interest has been shown in recent years in the effects of extreme pressure on metals. In this connection, many investigations into the effects of pressure on physical and mechanical properties and reactions have been undertaken. Due primarily to the experimental difficulties involved, there has not been a great deal of study of the structural changes resulting from exposure of metals to extreme pressure. It has been difficult, for instance, to produce a true hydrostatic stress state in many of the extreme pressure devices used, and also to directly examine specimens metallographically before and after pressurization. The results of a preliminary investigation into one of the effects of extreme pressure, and its associated true hydrostatic stress state, on the structure of metals are discussed herein. Metals exhibit varied degrees of anisotropy in their physical and mechanical properties. Significant among the anisotropic properties is the modulus of elasticity, which varies by a factor of as much as three in some of the fcc metals, and by much larger factors in some of the less symmetrical elements. As a result of the variation of the modulus of elasticity with crystallographic direction, shear stresses will be induced in polycrystalline samples under true hydrostatic compression. Depending on several factors, these shear stresses could become of suffi- cient magnitude to cause localized plastic deformation. Presented herein are some of the structural changes observed in polycrystalline bismuth as a result of exposure to hydrostatic pressures of up to 20,000 atm. Although several other materials in both bicrystal and polycrystalline form are also currently under investigation, bismuth was chosen initially, due to its low symmetry and moderately high degree of anisotropy in the elastic properties. The fact that extreme hydrostatic pressure can induce structural changes in some elements in the polycrystalline state is of importance in itself. However, it may also be a factor in many of the other extreme pressure effects. For instance, this localized plastic deformation could substantially lower the recrystallization temperature, thus altering the effects of extreme pressure on this phenomenon. Also, as commented on by ridgman,' the hysteresis in the polymorphic transition of polycrystalline bismuth under extreme pressures could possibly be attributed to structural changes brought about by unequal compressibility. Therefore, to accurately determine the true effects of extreme pressure on metallic substances, one first must determine if any structural changes due to hydrostatic compression are also simultaneously occurring. The purpose of this work has been to determine whether the shear stresses induced by hydrostatic pressure in an anisotropic polycrystalline material, such as bismuth, could reach a magnitude great enough to cause plastic deformation and to study the resultant structural changes and effects. THEORY In a metallic crystal, the elastic properties are dependent upon the crystallographic direction and plane. Depending upon the degree of anisotropy of the elastic properties and other factors, internal shear stresses of sufficient magnitude to cause localized plastic deformation may be induced in polycrystalline material by true hydrostatic compression. The following highly simplified two-dimensional model of two adjacent grains in a polycrystalline aggregate under hydrostatic pressure serves to schematically demonstrate how these shear stresses arise in an anisotropic material.

The Bureau of Mines measured the geochemical changes as H2SO4 was used for in situ uranium leaching by Rocky Mountain Energy Company near Casper, Wyoming. Cores and ground water were analyzed before leaching. Water samples were taken from observation wells located between injection and production wells as the leach solution was brought up to full strength in several steps. Measurements were made of pH, Eh, temperature, conductivity, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen,HC03, U. V, Na, K, Ca, Mg,S04, CI, Mo, Mn, Fe, AI, Si, F, P, As, and Se. The data were gathered to assist in geochemical modeling of leaching and to study the potential environmental effects of acid leaching. Environmental considerations appear favorable. For example, the concentration of Se, a toxic element often found in uranium deposits, stayed below the EPA standard for drinking water.

THE place of geophysics in the curriculum of a college or an engineering school has been much discussed. There is uncertainty as to whether the graduate may be called a "geological geophysicist" or a "geophysical geologist." Some have used the term "geophysical engineer." The question of the specialized undergraduate curriculum versus a general undergraduate training in the parent sciences with the addition of cultural electives has been and is still being argued. The literature during the past 10 years shows that there are two rather definite schools of thought on this subject. The prospective employer, engaged in active geophysical exploration, visualizes the graduate in terms of the routine work he will do in the field. The school administrator, grounded in many years of tradition in the cultural type of education, visualizes the graduate in terms of his position in a political and cultural society as well as in his work as a professional geophysicist. Both are right and both wrong. A third school of thought, that of the student himself, has been almost totally ignored. It would seem best, for the purpose of this paper, to treat these various points and allied material separately, and then to integrate the conclusions as a set of conditions that should be fulfilled as far as possible in the ideal curriculum. At the end the relationship of our findings to the curriculum that has been tentatively adopted at the University of Pittsburgh will be considered. DIVISIONS IN DEFINITION OF FIELD OF GEOPHYSICS Geophysics is that field of science in which geological and earth problems are solved with the use of physical and chemical techniques. Altogether too much attention has been paid to the artificial separation in this science of the commercial applications from the so-called "pure" or academic geophysics. The only real difference in the two types of work is one of scale of operations. In the commercial field the scale is large in terms of financial backing, immediate economic importance, and speed of operations. In the academic field the scale is large in terms of breadth of interests, in eventual economic importance, and length of time allowable for theoretical investigations. In exploration work the scale is small in terms of dimensions, since the methods are applicable only to the outer 20,000 ft. or so of the earth's. crust. In academic work, the student is not pressed for results of immediate economic importance, and therefore can afford to spend more time on problems that seem unimportant at the time. In the sense of background knowledge of the parent sciences necessary to the geophysicist, no essential difference can be found. Physics, chemistry, geology, and mathematics together, and in their proper proportionate amounts, form the matrix from which geophysical ideas and methods may spring.

THE constancy of calibration, and to a great extent the life, of a thermoelement is dependent on the suitability of the primary protecting tube in which the wires are mounted, particularly when used at high temperatures. An ideal thermocouple protecting tube would be com-posed of materials that would not contaminate the thermoelement wires contained in it-one that would remain absolutely gas-tight ,it all temperatures of usage, that will not be attacked by gases, or other surrounding agencies, that is not destroyed by heat, that withstands sudden and extreme temperature changes, that affords a high degree of mechanical protection and does not deform at high temperatures, that is a good heat conductor and obtainable in small diameters so as to keep down lag factors. It has not yet been possible to produce tubes of any known mate-rials that will meet all of these conditions. In selecting protecting tubes, therefore, one should be chosen the characteristics of which best fit it to the particular conditions of usage. Frequently conditions are such that two tubes have to be used, a primary gas-tight protecting tube inside of a secondary protecting tube, because certain agencies will attack the primary gas-tight tube unless it is guarded by the outside tube.

The history of the development of gold metallurgy in South Africa is divisible into two periods: That preceding the introduction of the cyanide process on a commercial scale in 1890; and the 24 years intervening between that important event and the present time. The period between the discovery of the banket reefs of the Witwaters-rand and the year 1890 was one of phenomenally rapid progress in mining development, but of no special interest to the metallurgist, There were no strikingly original or distinctly local advances in the treatment of gold ores. Californian practice in stamp milling and amalgamation prevailed, in mills ranging in equipment between 5 and 50 stamps, operating within a wide range of efficiency, and under the trying conditions usually encountered in a new and isolated field. The somewhat incomplete records of gold output of that period show that in December, 1887, there were 20 producing companies in the Witwatersrand district, of which 10 had mills, the largest being of 20 stamps. The only official record of returns for May, 1887, was that of the Wemmer mine, whose modest achievement with a 5-stamp mill was 100 tons crushed, producing 887 oz. 3 dwt. of gold. This is interesting in view of the present-day output of this field, which in 1913 reached 8,430,998 oz. The rapid increase of production during this first period (May, 1887, to January 1891) is shown by the following summary for the year 1890:1 Total tone crushed.................................. 702,828 Number of stamps in operation....................... 1,046 Average number of tons crushed per stamp per day..... 2.36 Yield of gold, ounces................................ 494,817 Yield per ton, pennyweights.......................... 13.36 The stamp duty ranged between 11/2 and 4 tons per day, according to weight of stamp, fineness of screen, and operating skill available. The prevailing weight of stamp was about 900 lb., and the screen, 900 meshes to the square inch.

I HIT the ceiling when I opened my November MINING ENGINEERING and after waiting a week to cool off I' still find it necessary to express my resentment of the gross libel embodied in the editorial introduction to Norman Stines' legitimate criticism of my paper on "Russia's Mineral Potential" (p. 949). The underlying thesis of my article, and a point that I tried to make even more clearly in my oral presentation at the St. Louis meeting last February, is that we should not over estimate the present and near-future mineral production of the USSR. The words that I resent in your boxed introduction are: "Opinions range from those presented by Paul Tyler ... to those of Norman C. Stines . . ." This is not merely an understatement that can be defended by admitting that the range goes much farther to the left, beyond me. It represents the appraisal that 90 pct of your members will carry away, namely that I am not only an incompetent observer-which may be true-but always that my bias is to applaud the efficiency of the beasts in the Kremlin-which is not true. Notwithstanding my efforts to clarify the record I now find myself branded as being at the opposite pole from 'Mr. Stines among the red-eyed worshipers of Communism or at least among the timid souls that shake in their boots in the belief that the Soviet system has created an invincible as well as an evil menace to the decent peoples of the world. My ideas are somewhere in the middle ground between Mr. Stines' complaisance or contempt and the exaggerated fears of several other observers whose views have received wide acceptance. PAUL M. We happen to know that, Mr. Tyler was reluctant to prepare the article for the Mineral Economics Division sessions at the 1951 Annual Meeting and did so only because of his loyalty to AIME. It was thought that this article would be a basis for discussion of this important subject at the Annual Meeting. I NTRODUCTION The injection of energy in the form of heat into an oil-bearing formation as a means of increasing the recovery of oil has been the subject of much discussion and experimentation as far back as 1920. The ideas have ranged from the injection of steam to the direct use of electricity as a means of getting thermal energy into a formation. However, most laboratory and field studies have been confined to the process whereby a portion of the crude in the reservoir is burned to generate the necessary heat to increase the mobility of the oil by reducing its viscosity. A recent paper by W. L. Martin, et al.', described the results of a number of laboratory experiments in which the combustion process was studied in a sandpack. Studies such as this indicate that with the temperatures involved, the oil is partially coked in this process and it is this coke which provides the fuel for combustion. The combustion of this residual coke can be analyzed theoretically by applying simple stoich-iometric principles to the combustion process. It is the purpose of this paper to compare the results reported in these experiments with those obtained from theoretical considerations. The variables studied by Martin, et al, among others, include combustion front velocity, air flux, oxygen utilization, fuel concentration, ratio of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide in combustion gases, and the hydrogen:carbon ratio of the residual fuel. All these variables come into consideration when the stoichiometry of the combustion process is studied. The experimental conditions and results are tabulated in Tables 3 and 4 of Ref. 1. For purposes of comparison with calculated results, it was necessary to change the units of a number of the variables. UNDERGROUND COMBUSTION STOICHIOMETRY The combustion or oxidation of the carbonaceous residue or "coke" on the sand can be described in terms of the equation: where n is atomic ratio of hydrogen to carbon, m is ratio of moles of CO2 to CO produced, and CH. is taken as the unit molecular weight, realizing that actually the coke has a large range of high molecular weights. Assuming that all the fuel laid down in the sand is burned, the ratio of moles of oxygen consumed to moles of coke can be written as follows. Dr. Clark has given an excellent resum6 of the recent theoretical re- search work that has been done on the generation and propagation of stress waves in various types of media.1 Unfortunately the dynamic properties of rock do not fit the assumed properties of the idealized media. As a result, none of the theoretical solutions for the generation of stress waves by applied pressures to interior boundaries of the spherical or cylindrical cavity appear to be completely satisfactory to explain experimental data. This fact does not mean that the theoretical work is in error. It simply means that the appropriate dynamic properties of rock have not been taken into account in the present theoretical derivations. Because of the difficulty of theoretically accounting for the crushing and cracking that takes place when explosives are detonated in spherical or cylindrical cavities, it seems advisable that future theoretical studies should attempt to separate the generation of stress waves from the propagation of stress waves. Perhaps if these two problems are separated, we may be able to solve one of them satisfactorily so that theory and experimental data agree. Dr. Clark's resumé of the research work on scaling and crater formation by point charges is aimed at obtaining a basic understanding of the physical theory of rock breakage, wave generation, and wave propagation. A cursory reading of Dr. Clark's paper shows that there is very little information summarized that can be used by the practicing engineer in the field of blasting. ALTHOUGH the unmined anthracite will last for approximately A 150 years, most of the thicker and cleaner coal beds have been almost entirely first-mined and pretty well robbed, leaving much of the present and future production to come from thin and dirtier beds. Herewith is a section of one of the dirty beds being mined in the Wyoming region This section shows that 45.8 per cent of the bed is made up of impurities and that the 45 in. of coal in the bed is in five benches, the thickest of which is 19 inches. In some localities of the anthracite region there are 14 beds of minable coal. Orderly and proper mining of the coal makes it necessary to rob or second-mine-almost all beds have already been first-mined-in sequence from the top downward. Therefore the robbing of the few remaining portions of the thicker and cleaner beds is in many instances being held up by the mining of the overlying thin and dirtier coal beds. Impurities Impurities consist of fire clay, slate, rock, and bone. The latter, which is black, contains 40 to 60 per cent carbon and often resembles good coal. In some beds there are also bands of "blue" coal, which, as the name implies, is of a bluish slaty color. Although much of this "blue" coal has a carban content almost as high as the good anthracite, it is not

The long-talked-of conversion of oil refining into a true chemical industry using petroleum as a raw material was hastened, particularly in the realm of motor-fuel manufacture, by the increased understanding and use of catalytic processes. The petroleum refiner's vocabulary has been extended to include alkylation, cyclization, aromatization, and isomerization. There are other devel: opments of a similar nature, but these are now considered commercially feasible under proper conditions. New Equipment Less expensive equipment and processes encouraged new construction and replacement. Estimates of money spent in the United States on building new plants and remodeling existing installations during 1938 place the sum at not less than $200,000,000, a noteworthy amount in a year marked by a business recession. The commercial application of small-scale catalytic polymerization of refinery gases made one of the latest advances available to the smaller operators, who usually are faced with unit installation and production costs higher than the large refinery enjoys. Competition was thereby fostered. Outstanding in this respect was the construction of two or more polymerization plants in small refineries at extremely low installation costs, with amortization measured in months instead of years. Houdry Processes Bursting like a bombshell late in the year was the disclosure of the extent of the development of the Houdry processes of catalytic cracking, viscosity breaking, gasoline treatment, desulphurization, and polymerization, said to be applicable to almost any raw petroleum stock and yielding gasoline of exceptionally high octane number.
