The formation of intermediate phase layers in cementation processes has been subjected to extensive qualitative investigation though to relatively little quantitative study; this work has recently been fully summarized by F. N. Rhines.' It is necessary here only to cnumerate the general conclusions drawn concerning the kinetic laws governing the growth of intermediate layers and to state what is known concerning the structural changes accompanying the generation of phase layers. I. When the intermediate phase is protective in type—i.e., when its density is less than that of the base metal, so that a continuous coating is formed and maintained—the isothermal growth of the phase follows a simple parabolic equation: X2 = kt [i] where X is the thickness of the alloy layer, k thc reaction rate constant, and t the time. The applicability of this equation to diffusion processes is tested by plotting the square of the thickness versus time, or by plotting the thickness versus the square root of time; the resultant achievement of a straight line in such a plot has been considered sufficient proof of the validity of this equation. Exceptions have been found where liquid phases are involved in the reaction, where the diffusion layer is cracked,2 and where thin semimetallic oxide and sulphide coatings are formed on metals.$ In the first two cases the thickness increases linearly with time, and in the latter it is a logarithmic function of time. 2. The rate of thickening varics with temperature according to the Arrhenius equation: k = Ae-Q/RT [2] where k is the parabolic rate constant of Eq. I, or some other rate-descriptive function, A is the action constant, e the base of natural logarithms, Q the heat of activation, R the gas constant, and T absolute temperature. This equation has been found to be generally valid except when transformations occur during reaction in either the base metal or in the reaction layer; in such instances Eq. 2 is still applicable with different values for the constants A and Q above and below the transformation temperature. 3. Ali phases that are stable at the temperature at which diffusion occurs will appear in the interdiffusion of two components. In some cases certain of the phases may be too thin to be observed and identified easily. Nonequilibrium phases have never been noted in thick reaction layers; i.e., layers of a thickness that may be discerned microscopically. One of the interesting features connected with the great continental uplift, which formed the table land of Mexico, is the great depth to which oxidation and secondary enrichment of orebodies occurred. This table land lies at altitudes ranging from 4000 to 7000 ft. (1219 to 2133 m.) above sea level. Several cases could be cited of oxidized zones in copper and lead mines which reached depths of upward of 1500 ft. (457 m.) below the surface, and it is universally admitted that the oxidized zone in a mine is limited by the permanent water level. Mexico, however, like many other countries in which deserts occur, is visited at rare intervals by tremendous floods, which sometimes cause variable water levels over long periods. The following cases bear out the idea, and lead to interesting conclusions of commercial value. My paper demonstrates that carbonates of ores may occur below water level and sulfides above, and I will endeavor to explain the causes of the phenomena in certain specific instances. FEW men reach middle life without having had the experience of failure in one or more undertakings; and most of us can look back with gratitude to help or advice given us by friends at critical periods of our lives. If, as men, we ask and take the benefit of such aid, why should we expect our sons to be stronger? A parent can make no greater mistake than to send a boy, however steady and intelligent he may be, off' to school or college, and expect the boy always to cope successfully with all the new conditions and new difficulties that may confront him. This is undoubtedly more the case with a freshman, in his first year at college, than in later years, or than it is with a boy at day- or boarding-school, where the boy receives a greater degree of care and oversight than can be given to the young man entering college; of all periods in life, the youth in his freshman year-fresh from the overshadowing care of home and school-may need judicious advice and timely aid. The change from the restraint of home and school to the freedom of college life is sudden and marked, and it is in this the first year of the boy or young man of 17, 18, or 19 years of age, that some tactful, judicious aid should be near him in his work and course. Some boys go to college so well prepared that they become careless and finally fall behind in their work from over-confidence. Others meet trouble from ambitiously trying to do more than their previous preparation, or physical or mental strength, can sustain. Others fall behind from illness-from injuries-from natural inability to grasp at first, without more aid than comes to them in the regular course of instruction, the higher mathematics-or mayhap the modern languages, or other subjects presented by the advanced curriculum of the present day. Book Review MANAGEMENT AND MEN. By Meyer Bloomfield, Boston. The Century Co., New York, 1919, pp. 584, H.X. 5 1/2. $3.50. This hook is an exposition of English efforts to solve the problem of labor unrest in England. The first six chapters are reprinted from articles published in the Satur-day Evening Post, for whom the author went to England to study the problem at first hand. These articles deal with housing, increased production, eliminating the internal friction in the industrial machine and a chapter each devoted to the view-point of employer and employee. These chapters are written in the easily readable magazine style and give a complete general survey of the particular solution being tried. Perhaps their greatest., certainly not their least, worth lies in the fact that they form a vehicle for unusually voluminous appendices containing in full the famous Whitley Reports which are the basis of the new movement, together with various reports, which, except for this publication, would be largely inaccessible to those inter-ested in this country. The Whitley scheme considers each industry a unit and proposes to establish therein a Joint Standing Industrial Council composed of representatives of employers and employees to consider appropriate matters affecting the industry at large. There is to be a District Council for each industry which will, as its name implies, deal with the clatters pertaining to that interest in. the particular district. The third and last body in this scheme of Industrial Parliament is the Works Committee, which is com-posed of representatives of the management and of the workers employed in particu-lar plants or mines to act in close cooperation With the district quid national machinery. The Whitley or similar schemes have been tried in many communities in England and the book contains interesting comments on the result obtained, it being notable that most of the objections conic from plants which have not tried the scheme. Meyer Bloomfield, the author; is the specialist in industrial personnel problems who organized the industrial service activities of the United States Shipping Board, Emergency Fleet Corporation. P. The direct-metal cars or ladles of the Maryland Steel Company have a capacity of 18 tons when filled within 12 inches of the top. On account of this large capacity, the formation of skulls in these ladles is by no means as rapid as in smaller ladles; but a skull once formed is a very unwieldy piece of metal to handle, and especially to remove from the ladle. We have found it cheaper to clean ladles often rather than make very heavy skulls. We aim to keep the ring of chilled metal that forms on the surface of the iron chipped off, so that the skull shall form principally at the bottom until it becomes so thick as to render the ladle unfit for service. Sometimes it happens that a ladle may be held for several hours filled with molten metal. This invariably leaves a large amount of chilled metal in the ladle. Frequently the skull will weigh several tons, and will be of the full size of the ladle inside, with a top crust, having perhaps a hole 12 inches square, through which the molten metal was poured. In order to remove skulls that cannot be easily chipped out with a bar, we use what may be called a skull-extractor, consisting of a hydraulic cylinder mounted in the center of a heavy cast-iron plate, standing vertically on a suitable foundation. Figs. 1 and 2 show the construction and operation of this apparatus, Fig. 1 being a view of the extractor with pistons extended to full stroke, and Fig. 2 a view with ladle in position and pistons about to commence the stroke. in both figures, A is the hydraulic cylinder, B the vertical cast-iron plate, and C the foundation. The water-pressure, admitted through the pipe, P, is 750 pounds per square inch, and the inside diameter of A is 14 inches. The tensile behavior of magnesium single crystals at a temperature of 26º ± 2ºC was investigated at varying pressure levels from 760 to 8 X 10-8 tow. For crystals deformed at a constant linear strain rate of 0.061 min-1. there was no apparent effect of the vacuum environment down to 10-8 torr. However, from a vacuum of 10-5 torr down to the lowest pressure attained (8 x 10-8 tor,), the effect of the vacuum environment was to increase the strain at the end of the first linear (or easy-glide) stage and to decrease the slope of this stage; the magnitude of this effect was found to be dependent on pressure. The slope of the second linear stage was also decreased at the lower pressure levels; however, this effect appears to be caused primarity by the vacuum effect on the first linear stage. The magnitude of the vacuum-environmrnt effect was also found to be dependent upon strain rate. The reduction in flow stress at 5 x 10-8 torr, as compared to the stress in air, was obserced to be about 10 pct for a strain rate of 0.0250 min-' and 70 pct for a strain rate of 0.67 min-1. No systematic effect of pressure on the critical resolvled shear stress was observed. The data interpreted in terms of a modified form of Mott's work-hardening mechanism for hexagonal metals. It has long been known that surface conditions influence the mechanical behavior of materials. Roscoe 1 demonstrated the importance of surface conditions on mechanical behavior by testing cadmium crystals with oxide layers. He found that the "apparent" critical resolved shear stress for cadmium was increased approximately 2.5 times by the presence of an oxide layer 1000 atoms thick. The magnitude of this effect was dependent on film thickness with crystals having films less than 20 atoms thick still showing a definite increase. This observed strengthening could not be attributed to any strength of the oxide film because of 1) the thinness of the films and 2) an observed increase in the flow stress as deformation proceeded. Harper and cottrel12 obtained similar results on zinc crystals which had been etched and steamed to give artificially thick oxide films. However, in the course of this study, they also carefully examined the very early stages of plastic flow for zinc crystals which in one case had been electrolytically polished and in the other had been lightly etched to produce a thin film. They then found that the critical resolved shear stress for both surface treatments of the crystals was actually identical but that the etched crystal exhibited a much more rapid initial hardening rate. This had not been noted previously. This result indicated that, in fact, the film caused an increase in the stress for continuation of slip, rather than for the initiation of slip. Lipsett and King3 investigated the effect of evaporated gold films on the plastic behavior of cadmium single crystals. For large angles (=75 deg) between the specimen axis and the normal to the slip plane, they found that the stress-strain curve of the coated specimen always lies above that for a clean specimen. STUDIES of ground movement and subsidence resulting from mining operations cover a broad field. It is also a very important consideration and one that eventually affects nearly every mining operation of any extent. The damage to surface buildings, removal of mine surface plants and replacements of main hoisting shafts must reach an astounding expenditure were these cost figures available over a period of years. Were the subject one of mathematical formula and dependent only on the angle of draw of the walls or country rocks, the problem would be relatively simple. Consideration must be given to depth and extent of workings; structural conditions of the orebodies and enclosing country rock; physical properties of these same rocks, including schistosity, bedding, jointing, slips, dikes, faults, and other structural weaknesses. The method of mining, extent of openings, supporting pillars, and amount of moisture or water underground are other pertinent factors. With such a large number of variable factors, it is apparent that the subject of subsidence is one that must be based largely on experience and results at other mines where conditions are somewhat comparable. In presenting this paper, it is the intent to describe the progressive results of past ground movements at the United Verde, to bring out physical conditions largely responsible for this movement, but to refrain from theorizing on the ultimate extent of subsidence resulting from future mining operations.

Cubic ZnSe crystals have been grown with HCl, HBr, and I, as chemical transport reagents. The growth of large, well faceted crystals is in the order HCl < HBr < I, with some produced by I, transport being 1 cm on an edge. ZnSe:I crystals showed no strain in cross polarized light and were homogeneous as determined by electron microprobe. These ZnSe:I crystals had a mobility at 25°C of about 300 sq cm per v-sec and contained 103 dislocations per sq cm; further, these crystals were pure cubic and showed both photolumi-nescence and photo conductance. Doping was attempted during crystal growth. ZnS and Zn (S,Se) crystals were also grown by I, transport. ZnSe crystals have been grown by most of the common techniques.1"6 Of these, chemical vapor transport as developed by Kaldis2 showed promise of producing high perfection, cubic ZnSe. With chemical transport, crystals can be grown far below the transition temperature for conversion of cubic to hexagonal structure. A small temperature gradient between source and growth region tends to allow near equilibrium growth, which should lead to good crystalline perfection. Because it is necessary to form volatile compounds, halogens or their compounds are extensively used as transport agents. HCl, HBr, and I, were compared as transport agents for growth of ZnSe crystals. Doping during crystal growth was attempted. ZnS and ZnSxSe1-x crystals were also grown by chemical transport. Electrical and optical properties of the crystals were examined. EXPERIMENTAL Fig. 1 is a sketch of the growth apparatus, which was a modification of Kaldis&apos;. A quartz rod which butted against the seed crystal served as a heat sink to promote growth only on the seed. Initially, crystal growth was attempted with ZnSe prepared by wet chemical methods. Because such a material contained oxides and selenates, HC1 reacted with these oxygen compounds to form H2O and no ZnSe transport occurred. Further, this ZnSe contained about 10 ppm Cu plus other impurities. High purity ZnSe, containing small amounts or no oxygen compounds, was prepared by reaction of H2Se with zinc vapors at 600° to 800°C in an atmosphere of palladium diffused H2.7 The ZnSe thus produced was usually copper free and contained only 1 ppm by weight of magnesium as determined by emission spectrographic analysis. G.E.&apos;s electronic grade ZnS, which had about 10 ppm metallic impurities, was used without further treatment. ZnS-ZnSe charges were prepared by mixing the two compounds together, then sintering 24 hr at 1100°C in an H2S ambient. The gases, HBr and HC1, were commercial grade, of 99.9 pct purity, while the I2 was 99.999 pct pure. The single crystal seeds with (111) faces for growth were mechanically held in place by sealing the outer quartz tube to the growth tube. After the charge was introduced, the system was outgassed at l0-5 torr while heated to 500°C. The desired quantities of transport reagents were then sealed off in the system, which had been cooled to 25°C. The growth tubes were inserted into a furnace with the desired temperature and thermal gradient. The system was allowed to cool for 1 to 12 hr from growth temperatures of about 850" to 25°C. The tubes remained stationary during crystal growth. HCl CHEMICAL TRANSPORT GROWTH Preliminary runs with HC1 had a temperature gradient of 100° to 200°C and no seed or heat sink. The notion prevails that writing is a knack, that the skilful use of the pen is a gift of nature. This is an error. Dogberry may be responsible for it; he said: "To be a well-informed man is the gift of fortune, but to write and read comes by nature". Because Dogberry said it, we may be sure that Shakespeare thought otherwise. Ability of any sort may be partly innate, but my own observation and experience lead me to conclude that most of the easy writers have become so by constant practice. As I recall the names of men successful with the pen, I remember that most of them have written a great deal and have taken particular pains to improve their style. The suggestion that proficiency in the difficult art is a happy accident provokes a sardonic smile. The larger part of the great writing in our literature is the result of persistent effort. An easy fluency has been the undoing of many; their flamboyant and fantastic scribbling has proved as perishable as froth. This criticism applies to technical writing also; in order that a technical description or discussion may hold the interest of the reader, at least long enough to cause him to read it to the end, the writing must be done carefully and systematically; otherwise it will fail in its purpose of conveying information. Clearness is absolutely essential. "It is not enough to use language that may be understood; it is necessary to use language that must be understood."* The purpose of writing, at least of that which is meant to be read by others, is not only to express ideas but to communicate them. Synthetic polycrystals of wustite were reduced ilz H2-H2O mixtures over limited roncentration ranges wiltun the wustite. field and the weight changes were continuously followed with a McBain quartz spiral balance. The reduction was. found to be controlled by a combined surface plus solid-state diffusion reaction. The solid-state diffusion had an activation energy of 38 kcal. Self--diflusioities of iron decreased with itzcreasing vacancy concentration. The activation energy of. the surface reaction runs different tor- different samples. The surface reaction-rate constan increased with increasirzg vacancy concentration. THE reduction of the oxides of iron has been studied for many years. Edstroem&apos; has summarized the early work and has provided much information on the reduction of magnetite and hematite by hydrogen and carbon monoxide. More recent summaries are those by smeltzer2 and Themelis and Gauvin.3 Most investigators have reported that the iron metal which forms the outer layer during gaseous reduction is rather porous. According to Kohl and Engel14 the formation of such a porous iron layer depends on the properties of the underlying wiistite layer, on the reaction of the gas with the wustite surface, and on the transport of matter through the wustite layer. McKewan, Quets, Wadsworth, and Lewis, and Knacke 10 have found that, if a porous iron layer is formed, a surface reaction between gas and wustite at the bottom of the pores controls the rate of reaction. Seth and ROSS 11 and Warner 12 have pointed out that the influence of the gaseous pore diffusion through the porous iron layer cannot be neglected. It has further been shown that the wiistite layer formed during reduction is dense and that transport of matter across the layer occurs only by solid-state diffusion of iron ions.13,14 The solid-state diffusion rates observed by Edstroem and Bitsianis 14 and the surface reaction rates observed by Quets eta1.&apos; show that an interaction of the two steps in controlling the reaction rate has to be considered. In this investigation the reduction of wustite was studied with respect to the interaction of the two steps, isolated from any other effects, by reducing wustite within the wustite field from higher to lower oxygen concentrations with H2-H2O gas mixtures. A similar study with CO-CO2 mixtures has been performed by Levin and wagner.15 Fused synthetic wustite polycrystals were reduced in steps of 0.4 wt pct from 24.4 to 23.2 wt pct 0 and over a temperature range from 700" to 1050°C. A few tests were also conducted with reduction steps from 24.4 to 23.6 wt pct 0 and 24.5 to 23.2 wtpct0. The Fe-O phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1 where the composition of the gas phase in equilibrium with the condensed phases is plotted as pct H2 vs the temperature. A careful study of the literature led to the conclusion that the fully drawn equicomposition curves (in wt pct O) in the wustite field used by Edstroem 1,16 and other authors needed some correction. Based on results by Darken and Gurry17 (shown as open circles) and on some of our own data, four corrected curves for 23.2, 23.6, 24.0, and 24.4 wt pct O were calculated (drawn as dashed lines in Fig. 1) which should replace the fully drawn equicomposition curves. MATERIALS AND APPARATUS Materials and Specimen Preparation. Wustite was prepared from iron sulfate (Fisher Scientific Co., New York) which had a purity of over 99.92 pct, with small amounts of manganese, copper, and zinc adding up to 0.03 pct. From the aqueous solution iron oxalate was precipitated and decomposed to magnetite according to Economos. 18 The magnetite powder was pressed into cylinders and sintered in vacuum at 900°C for several hours. The sintered compacts were placed in a platinum crucible of 2.5 cm diam which was fitted into a high-purity alumina crucible and then inserted into the center of the graphite heating element of an electric resistance furnace.lg The furnace was evacuated to below 1 p Hg and the magnetite sample was slowly heated. A formulation is given for radiant heat loss from the surface of molten steel held in a ladle and numerical solutions are presented for the resultant integrodif-ferential equations. The results are shown on plots of the net rate of heat loss against time, with the geometlry, emissivities, thermal properties of the walls, and Preheat as parameters. It was found that the rate of the vadiant heat loss from the exposed metal surface was comparable to the conductive losses from the Portion of the metal in direct contact with the walls. The radiant heat loss was markedly affected by the geometry and by the thermal properties of the walls the net radiant heat loss from the steel could be drastically reduced by providing a top cover and also by the provision of preheat. The results of this work are thought to be relevant to heat loss calculatious concerned with vacuum degassing and with operatzons in which molten metals are held in ladles. WhEN molten steel is held or transferred in ladles heat losses inevitably occur. The accurate assessment of these heat losses is of importance in process design considerations, as the temperature of the metal may have to meet rigid specifications in certain stages of the processing sequence. As shown in Fig. 1, the principal mechanisms responsible for heat loss are: i) Conduction into the walls and ii) Thermal radation from the top metal surface (possibly augmented by natural convection) The conductive heat loss may be readily calculated as much information is available in the literature on both the general theory1&apos;&apos; and on its particular applications to ladle heat loss calculations. Evaluation of the radiant component of the heat loss is less straight-forward. In two recent papers it has been shown that the presence of a slag layer 2 to 3 in. thick would prevent any significant heat loss for periods up to an hour,5&apos;" however, should bare metal be exposed, constituting the radiant surface, substantial heat losses could occur. This latter case is of considerable practical interest in various degassing operations and in the vacuum processing of certain specialty steels, where the top surface of the metal is not covered by a protective slag layer. Under these conditions a substantial radiant flux is emitted by the top metal surface; part of this flux leaves the system, part of it falls in the ladle walls. The radiant flux incident on the ladle walls is in part absorbed and conducted away, and in part reflected and re radiated. The purpose of the paper is to present a general formulation of the problem, the resultant solution of which should enable computation of the net radiant heat loss from the metal surface. The principal variables, the effect of which will be investigated, include initial metal temperature, geometry, thermal and radiative properties of the wall, and various modes of preheat. FORMULATION Consider a cylindrical enclosure, shown in Fig. 2, with a diameter D, height H, and wall thickness W, the cover at the top of the cylinder having a wall thickness L. If the temperature of the base (representing the top surface of the metal) is kept constant, say, Tb, the problem is to calculate the net rate of heat loss from the base as a function of time, geometry, the initial temperature distribution, and the thermal properties of the system. As customary, the formulation will consist of the mathematical statement of the conservation of thermal energy within the system.

The uranium atom has been made to divide into parts somewhat after the style of reproduction of the amoeba. When an amoeba divides into two parts, however, it produces two amoebae substantially alike and each substantially like the parent: furthermore, there is no considerable change of energy when this happens. When the uranium atom divides it yields other atoms such as barium and krypton with the complete destruction of the original uranium atom but with the liberation of a tremendous amount of energy. The activation energy required to break a pinned dislocation line away from its condensed atmosphere of impurity atoms is calculated as a .function of applied stress, without neglecting line tension. Reasows are presented for not assuming the effect of line tension to be negligible when considering the problem of freeing a small segment of dislocation from an impurity atmosphere. The dislocation is considered to he pinned at each atomic size along its length and the pinning points are assumzed immobile. The development is a refinement of the origznal cottrell-bilby1 theory. The solution is compared to recent approximations developed by cottrell3 and Haasen5 in which line tension con- IN 1949 Cottrell and bilby1 considered the problem of determining the force required to pull a dislocation away from its condensed atmosphere of impurity atoms. They also examined the effect of thermal fluctuations on this force. The dislocation line was pictured as bowing out in a triangular loop under the action of an applied stress, and the activation energy necessary to free the dislocation from its atmosphere was calculated as a function of stress, line energy, and dislocation-solute atom interaction. siderations were neglected. A qualitative explanation of the yielding process in terms of the activation of Frank-Read sources is presented, but the lack of a realistic solution to the dynamic dislocation problem involved prevents an extension of the model at present. A self-consistent correlation between the present calculations and experimental data for delay time associated with yielding and the temperature dependence of the upper yield stress was made. Favorable agreement was noted. It is concluded that extension of the original Cottrell-~ilby&apos; theory which includes line tension effects can just as well describe the yielding process as other approximations3,5 which neglect line tension. Cottrell and Bilby found the form of the activation energy vs stress curves to be almost independent of the line energy and the interaction energy (i.e., these parameters only affected the activation energy U by a scale factor). A check of the theory was accomplished by comparison with the experimental data of McAdam and Mebs2 for the lower yield stress as a function of temperature. cottrell,3 in 1957, attempted to obtain a simple closed-form solution for the activation energy as a function of stress by linearizing the quartic equation relating displacement of the dislocation line and applied stress. The distribution of lead between phases in the Ag-Sb-Te system was studied using microautoradio -graphy. Two compositions were investigated, both containing an intermediate phase Known as silver antimony telluride as the major phase, and one containing AgzTe and the other SbzTes as the minor phase. For both compositions, two thermal treatments were used: nonequilibrium solidification from the melt and long equilibration anneals of the as-solidified structure. For each composition, lead was segregated in the minor phase of the as-solidified structure, but was distributed in the matrix after anneal. The electrical resistivity and carrier type were insensitive to the distribution of lead in the two-phase structure. ThERE has been considerable interest in the Ag-Sb-Te system because of its thermoelectric properties. The major interest has been in compositions on the vertical section between AgzTe and SbzTes, particularly the 50 mole pct SbzTes composition AgSbTez (compositions are conveniently expressed as mole percent SbzTes along the AgzTe-SbzTes section). One of the major problems in the proper evaluation and utilization of this material is the inability to control the electrical properties through impurity additions: all alloys prepared to date have been p-type, even with the addition of large amounts of impurities. It has been shown Wit all the compositions previously studied contain an intermediate phase of the NaCl st&apos;ructure as a major phase (denoted by b) and a second phase, either AgzTe or SbzTe3, as a minor phase.&apos;-3 One explanation for the unusual electrical behavior of this material is that the impurity additions have a higher solubility in the second phase than in the matrix; the impurity would segregate to the second phase, leaving the bulk matrix essentially free of impurity.4 In order to investigate this mechanism with a specific impurity element, the distribution of lead between the two phases was determined using autoradiography. Lead 210 was chosen because of the suitability of its 0.029 mev 0 particle for autoradiography and also because of the interest in lead as an impurity in this system.5&apos;6 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two compositions were taken from the vertical section between AgzTe and SbzTes, 50 mole pet SbzTes (Viz. AgSbTez) and 75 mole pct SbzTes, in which AgzTe and SbzTes appear, respectively, as the minor phase. Lead containing radioactive lead (pb210) was added to the above compositions to provide a concentration of 0.1 wt pct Pb. The material was placed in a graphite crucible in a quartz tube which was then evacuated and sealed. The samples were melted and solidified by cooling at a rate of 8°C per min and then removed and prepared for microa~toradiography. After autoradiographic examination of these samples, they were again encapsulated and annealed in an isothermal bath at 300°C for a number of days and prepared for examination. An alternate method of preparation employed a zone-melting furnace; the molten zone traversed the sample at a rate of 1.2 cm per hr and the solid was maintained at a temperature of 500°C both before and after solidification. This treatment had the same effect as solidification at a slow rate followed by an anneal for several hours at 500°C. In order to obtain the best resolution, thin sections of the alloy were prepared by hand lapping to a thickness of approximately 20 p. Other samples were prepared for examination by lapping a flat surface on the bulk sample. The resolution, although somewhat better in the former procedure, was adequate in both instances and the majority of the samples were treated in the latter fashion. A piece of autoradiographic film (Kodak Experimental SP 764 Autoradiographic Permeable Base Safety Stripping Film) was stripped from its backing, care being taken to avoid fogging due to static-electrical discharge. A small amount of water was placed on the sample, the film applied emulsion side down on the surface of the sample, and the sample and the film dipped into water in order to assure smooth contact. After drying, the film was exposed for 2 to 5 days, the period of time selected to give the best resolution. The film was developed on the specimen and fixed and washed in place. ThE solution of a diatomic gas such as 0, or N2 in a metal usually follows Sieverts&apos; law; i. e., Here C is the solute concentration at equilibrium and P, the gas pressure. The proportionality constant Ks is also the equilibrium constant for the reaction 1/2 02 (at pressure, P) - 0 (in solution at [21 concentration., C). to use oxygen as an illustrative gas. Sieverts&apos; law is therefore interpreted to indicate that diatomic gases go into metallic solution atomically and that the solute "gas" atoms interact negligibly with each other. Of course, this interpretation is strictly valid only over the temperature interval in which the reaction indicated in [Z] can be investigated. At temperatures several hundreds of degrees below this interval, the possibility of interactions between solute atoms is conceivable. Indeed, from internal-friction measurements some evidence for the existence of groupings of oxygen atoms in tantalum solid solutions was presented a few years ago.1,2 Over a range of solute concentration, the experimental oxygen internal-friction peak in tantalum, measured as a function of temperature at constant frequency of vibration, can be described as the sum of two elemental peaks, each corresponding to a separate relaxation process. At 0.7 cps, the height of the elemental peak found at 137°C is proportional to the oxygen content, whereas the height of the one at 162°C varies as the square of the oxygen concentration. The 137°C peak was presumed to arise from the stress-induced ordering of oxygen atoms among various classes of octahedral sites in the manner proposed by Snoek.3 The 162°C peak was attributed to a somewhat similar stress-induced ordering process, in which each oxygen atom was interacting with a neighboring oxygen atom. Similarly, the experimental peak due to nitrogen in tantalum can also be described as the sum of two peaks. The height of one varies as the nitrogen concentration and the other as the square of this quantity. In fact, some evidence of solute interactions exist for all oxygen and nitrogen solid solutions of Group V transition metals. However, the interaction energy was not obtained previously for any alloy. The determination of this quantity, as a part of a more intensive study of the interaction between oxygen atoms in solid solution in tantalum, is reported in this paper. When commercial silicon iron sheets of varying magnetic quality are isothermally annealed at high temperatures, extremely large grains develop in the material having good magnetic properties. These grains are of the (110) [001] orientation and are formed by secondary recrystallization. The primary driving force for this secondary recrystallization is grain boundary free energy. For the secondary grains, activation energies of 103 kcal per mole for nucleation, and of 75.5 kcal per mole for growth, were obtained. The activation energy for nucleation of the secondary grains is consistent with a model involving redistribution of a precipitate acting as the primary grain growth inhibitor. SINGLY oriented silicon iron sheet was first produced in 1935.1 The material as commercially produced today has a very highly developed preferred orientation or texture; up to 95 pct of the grains are crystallographically oriented with their (110) planes in the plane of the sheet and their [loo] directions parallel to the rolling direction. This texture, usually written as (110) [00l], is referred to as the "GOSS" or the "cube-on-edge" texture. Because the magnetic properties of this material are superior to those of the nonoriented sheets in the direction of rolling, the oriented silicon iron has acquired tremendous industrial importance especially in the manufacture of transformer cores and other electrical equipment. The commercially produced material is essentially an iron-silicon alloy containing about 3 1/4 pct Si with minor impurities totaling less than 0.15 pct. The silicon steel heat is melted in the open hearth or electric furnace. The ingots are hot rolled, with or without being slabbed, to strips of 0.100 to 0.080 in. thickness. They are then cold reduced to an intermediate thickness, recrystallized, cold reduced to final thickness, decarburized, and finally annealed at a high temperature. During this high-temperature anneal, extremely large grains with the cube-on-edge texture are produced in the sheet. Several papers have appeared in the literature2-10 relating to the production of the Goss-textured material. Most of these describe the textures produced on cold rolling and on subsequent annealing of single crystal or polycrystalline silicon iron. May and Turnbull11,12 have recently shown the necessity of a second-phase dispersed impurity in the material for the production of the Goss texture. However, none of these papers describes in detail the nucleation and growth kinetics of the (110) [001] grains during the final high-temperature anneal.* The present work, therefore, is an attempt to understand the nucleation and growth kinetics of the cube-on-edge grains in the silicon iron sheet during the final high-temperature anneal.

Apart from a usable product and good mining conditions, the greatest asset for a profitable coal mining organization is an effective mine maintenance program. The first step in achieving this is to have good mechanics-or men who want to be mechanics and are interested in knowing ,more about the design and control of the machines in their charge. A good mechanic&apos;s knowledge and ability result from ambition, curiosity, and determination. Starting with these qualities, the aspiring mechanic can launch his career by learning all he can about mechanics, electricity, and hydraulics. Though the path is rough, the end result is rewarding. Mining machinery probably receives as much, if not more, abuse as any other heavy equipment in use today. Considering the conditions under which much of the repair work must be done, it is essential that the mine operator has the best men and tools to perform the work. Mining machines, from their inception, have utilized the electric motor ; and down through the years of mechanization, this power source has undergone many changes to better adapt it to the job. The first motors used were direct-current (d-c) motors since d-c power was the most economical power source for mining at the time of early mechanization. These motors were large open-type machines which are seldom used in modern mining. Because of the mine environment, the d-c motor has been reduced in size to better suit the application in mining machines and is now manufactured with dust-tight or explosion-proof enclosures. The d-c motor is constructed with either (or both) series and shunt fields located on the stationary part of the motor (stator) and an armature coil wound on the rotating part of the motor (rotor). Power is supplied to the armature by brushes which are held stationary and make sliding contact with the armature. The brushes requires regular and careful maintenance because worn or defective brushes will cause heat or arcing which can destroy the motor. D-c motors can be used as d-c generators when mechanical power is supplied to them by the rotating
