THIS paper gives a brief summary of the process of manufacture of sterling silver, and some of its more important physical properties, as observed in commercial production of rolled sheet and wire. Although papers have been published by Turner and Smith,1 Rose,2 Sperry3 and Jordan,4 there are few technical data available, and unfortunately the time allowed for the preparation of this paper has not been sufficient to make it as comprehensive as the title might indicate. ANALYSIS OF STERLING SILVER Fine or pure silver is too soft for coinage and the manufacture of articles in which strength and resistance to wear are desired. From the earliest times of which we have record, copper has been the metal generally used to harden silver. Analyses of coins and silver articles from ancient tombs show varying amounts of copper, and old Roman silver objects in the British Museum have approximately the same analysis as our sterling. The first authentic record of the establishment of a standard alloy is during the reign of Henry II in England. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the people in the Eastern Provinces of Germany had a reputation for the standard and purity of their silver coinage, and it is said that Henry II employed some of these Easterlings, as they were called, to improve and standardize the English coinage, which had become debased. The incidence of liquid inzmiscibility in binar)) indium alloys has been theoretically analyzed on the basis of the Hildebrand-Alott equation. Bedictions of miscibility or otherwise Imve in general been found to agree with those phase diagrams that are already publislzed in the literature. Out of a total of 27 systems, where either the complete phase diagrams are published or liquid immiscible behavior is reported, the Predictions agree with the experimental data in 25 systems, the exceptions being the Te-In and Ni-In systems. According to the equation, liquid immiscibility is also indicated in the binary alloys of indium with K, Rb, Cs, Na, Sr, Ba, Ti, Zr, V. Nb(Cb), Ta, W, U, Re, Ru, Rh, Os, and Ir. RECENT investigations by the author have shown that indium when alloyed with iron, chromium, and cobalt shows liquid immiscible behavior.1"3 The Fe-In phase diagram shows a wide range of compositions where the liquids are immiscible.4,5 No intermediate phases are present in this system. No precise information is available about the extent of liquid immiscibility in the Co-In system. However, it is certain that there is a range of compositions where the liquids are immiscible and that there are two or three intermediate phases,376 in the system. Liquid immiscibility is also strongly indicated in the Cr-In system and no evidence was obtained in the brief investigation to indicate the presence of intermediate Cr-In phases.2 The present paper deals with a theoretical analysis of binary alloys of indium with certain elements of the periodic table and indicates the systems where liquid immiscibility may be expected. The incidence of liquid immiscibility in binary systems has been theoretically examined by many workers and many excellent papers are available on the subject. In this paper, the alloy systems are examined on the basis of the more recent ideas proposed by Mott.7,8 It has been claimed8 that the Mott parameter predicts the incidence of miscibility or otherwise with reasonable accuracy and consistency. BACKGROUND TO MOTT&apos;S APPROACH Hildebrand applied his immiscibility rule for non-polar liquids to various alloy systems.9 The basis of this rule is that the equation for the excess free energy of formation of a liquid solution is rather similar to the theoretical expression for the energy of mixing of a regular solution. He postulated that when the heat of mixing is sufficiently high, separation into liquid phases will occur and the condition for complete CUPPAM DASARATHY is at the Research Centre, British Steel Corporation, (South Wales Group), Port Talbot, Glamorgan, Great Britain. The term (?EVA/VA)1/2 was regarded as a measure of the binding energy of the component A and was called the L&apos;solubility parameter" 8A. On this basis immiscibility occurs when 1/2(VA+VB)(bA-bBf > 2RT [2] Apparently, however, there were several inconsistencies in that according to Eq. [2] several systems known to be miscible in the liquid state were predicted as immiscible. MOTT&apos;S ANALYSIS ~ott&apos;" regards that the reason for the inconsistencies arising out of Hildebrand&apos;s equation was largely due to the electrochemical attraction between the two elements, not being considered. Hence, Eqs. [I] and [2] were modified by taking into account the electro-negativities of the two elements XA and XB, and Mott arrived at an equation for immiscibility, i(VA + VB)(6A - aB)2 - 23,Q60n(XA - XBf > 2RT [3j which can be written as i **&£*&* >&apos;*°™- &apos;• HI T being the melting point of the more refractory component of the system. In Eq. [4], the numerator was called the Hildebrand term, the denominator, the electronegativity term, and their ratio, the Mott number. Mott observed that if the Mott number of a given binary system was greater than the maximum number of Pauling bonds which the two metals could form, then liquid immiscibility could be expected. The maximum number of bonds formed by a given metal was considered to be directly related to the number of bonding electrons available, i.e., to its maximum valency. Since the valencies of the elements considered vary from 1 to 6, Mott assumed that if the ratio of the Hildebrand term to the electronegativity term was >6, then immiscibility could be expected. On the contrary, if the ratio is <1, the metals should be miscible. Further, the alloying behavior is not only influenced by the valencies of the two elements but also by the relative atomic sizes that influence the types of packing and hence the coordination number. Mott considers that on average the maximum number of near neighbors of unlike atoms is 6. Thus, on both valency and size factor considerations, Mott concludes that the maximum number of bonds&apos; possible in any system was 6, this being the upper limit of the Mott number for miscibility. The Monument Valley and White Canyon districts are in northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah. Exploration and mining for uranium has been conducted in these districts since the late 1940's. In July 1965, ore reserves plus ore production at 174 properties were approximately 3.3 million tons of ore containing about 19 million pounds U3O8, of which about 10 per cent remained in reserves. The two largest mines, Monument No. 2 and Happy Jack, together account for about 45 per cent of the sum of production and reserves. Approximately half the deposits in these districts contain less than 1000 tons of ore. Nearly 5000 feet of Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic sedimentary rocks, mainly continental in origin, are exposed in these districts. All the important uranium deposits are in the Shinarump, the basal member of the Chinle Formation of Triassic age. The Shinarump lies on a widespread unconformity. It is composed of fluvial sediments, generally less than 100 feet thick, that were deposited by streams flowing from a source to the south. Most of the deposits are in an arcuate belt, convex to the west. This belt, 3 to 12 miles wide, extends from Monument Valley northward nearly 130 miles. It is along the western flank of the ancient Monument Valley-Monticello upland, an area that was slightly uplifted at the beginning and again at the end of deposition of the Shinarump. Erosion and subsequent reworking of the Shinarump sediments in the vicinity of this upland are postulated to have made possible the transportation, in solution, of the uranium contained in these sediments. The soluble uranium probably was carried by migrating ground water into sites favorable for precipitation in Shinarump beds bordering the upland. Thus, the original very small amounts of dispersed uranium in the early Shinarump sediments were accreted in the favorable belt where the accumulations of carbonaceous plant remains and their decay products provided a persistent reducing environment.

The dependence of ortho kink-band formation on crystal orientation, on temperature, and on the conditions at the ends of a specimen is described. Load-compression curves for crystals that kink are presented. The reversibility of ortho kinking is demonstrated, and motion of kink planes through crystals is shown. Finally, a phenomenological explanation of ortho kink-band formation is given. ORTHO compressive kink bands (Fig. la) were discovered for the case of metals by Orowan,1 and they have been discussed by Jillson2 and in some detail by Hess and Barrett." However, their history in nonmetallic crystals is considerably older. It is not known when they were first observed in mineral crystals, but descriptions of them may be found as early as 1885.* They were sometimes mistaken for twins.6 Mügge seems to have been first to realize their true nature and importance. He reviewed the knowledge of them for a wide variety of crystals: anhydrite, antimonite, kyanite, vivianite, gypsum, mica, graphite, molybdenite, barium bromide, cal-cite, sodium nitrate, and barite. Also, the "twins" observed by Bridgman7 in sapphire crystals resemble kink bands more than twins. The terms ortho and para kink bands have been coined in order to distinguish between two types of kink bands which seem to represent the same geometrical configurations, but which have different origins and sizes. Ortho kink bands are the usual type that form at low loads when zinc crystals are compressed parallel to the basal plane. Para kink bands form at much higher loads in highly deformed crystals. These terms refer to compression phenomena and are not to be confused with analogous tension phenomena such as tensile kink bands and deformation bands. Mügge described the geometry of ortho kink bands quite completely for kyanite crystals, Fig. lc. The geometry observed for cadmium by Orowan1 and for zinc by Hess and Barrett3 is very similar to that described by Mügge. (See Hess and Barrett for a complete discussion.) The advent of the space age and its promise of interplanetary flight has prompted new ideas for propulsion systems that will allow maximum energy with minimum fuel weight. The use of cesium as the source of energy for such rocket flights has been found desirable. Theoretical efficiency of a rocket fuel is measured in terms of specific impulse, defined as the number of pounds of thrust per pound of propellant consumed per second. Specific impulse is usually expressed in seconds (the number of seconds for which one pound of fuel would produce one pound of thrust) although it is really a measure of total energy, not of power. The most sophisticated chemical fuels have a specific impulse of 300 to 400 sec; liquid hydrogen heated by nuclear reactor has a specific impulse of 1000 to 1200 sec. Specific impulses as high as 20,000 sec, however, are theoretically attainable with the ion rocket, in which free cesium ions are accelerated across a voltage drop and ejected at high velocity.&apos; Characteristics of the system have been sketched by Boden.2 The desirable properties of an ion propellant are: 1) low ionization potential, 2) low boiling point, and 3) high atomic weight. Alkali metals best fulfill these requirements, and Table I indicates the superiority of cesium. The use of heavy complex ions such as UCl3 is ruled out by their instability and other disadvantages.&apos; Despite its enormous superiority in specific impulse, the ion rocket is inherently low-powered, capable of very small acceleration. Application of ion propulsion will be limited to large rockets and spaceships on missions requiring powered flight for weeks or months and employing a separate chemical propulsion system for escape from the earth&apos;s atmosphere where power requirements are large but of brief duration. For example, Kraemer and Larson3 considered the case of an unmanned 25,000-lb pay-load placed in a 300-mile orbit by chemical rockets, proceeding thence by ion propulsion to the vicinity of Mars, where it would go into orbit once again. Calculations provide for 8500 lb of cesium for such a voyage. The question of whether such quantities of cesium will be readily available to the space program does not appear to have been considered by geologists and mining engineers. Present Production and Uses Literature on industrial applications of cesium is scanty. The metal is used in scintillation counters, photocells, infra-red detection devices, and as a "getter" in low-voltage vacuum tubes. Production is sporadic and total figures are not published, but the annual consumption is measured in pounds rather than in tons. The few pollucite deposits known, small as they are, can easily supply the present limited demand for gram or pound lots of cesium. Until recently the price of cesium was $2 to $4 per gram, but according to Chemical Engineering, cesium salts are now available at $13 to $27.50 per lb. Geochemical Distribution As a large alkali ion, the cesium ion accompanies potassium in geological processes and tends to be concentrated in the latest crystallizing fractions of potassium minerals in much the same manner as rubidium. Most of the cesium in igneous rocks, therefore, is in the micas and potash feldspars of granites, and especially in granitic pegmatites. The cesium content rises markedly in the micas of the late by-drothermal replacement stage in complex pegmatite~.&apos; Typically, cesium is only 0.5 to 0.01 times as abundant as rubidium in potassium minerals. Rb&apos;, with a radius of 1.47 A, is close enough in size to K&apos; (1.33 A) so that rubidium forms no minerals of its own. Cs+ is so large (1.67 A) that only small concentrations can be taken up in potassium minerals; when cesium is present in solution in larger concentration it forms the mineral pollucite, Cs3-Na2A17Si17O48.3H2O, which is known only in pegmatites. IN the parlance of Hollywood, it was a super-colossal meeting. In the more restrained language of engineers, the Institute&apos;s 75th Anniversary Celebration attracted the largest crowd ever; was the longest Annual Meeting ever held, occupying a full week; had more important papers, more important people, more of an international flavor, and more glamour than ever before. And in the minds of those who came to the big city from the wide open spaces, one other record should be mentioned: for those not on an expense account, it was the most expensive affair ever staged by the Institute! To state the attendance down to the last digit for a meeting such as this is impossible. The total names registered on cards, plus those who attended the Annual Banquet but were not otherwise registered, came to 3149. But a few were registered twice, and probably a still larger few did not register at all, but just dropped in for a session or two in which they were interested. It would appear that 3200 would be about as close an estimate of attendance as could be made, and that is some 300 more than came to the biggest Annual Meeting of the past-in 1944. A considerable number of members brought their wives, but most were delegates at large.

(Spokane Meeting, September, 1909.) DURING. the summer of 1905 I was employed by the U. S. Geological Survey to investigate the geology, Mining, and preparation of barite in most. of the fields of the United States. The Eastern districts have been more or less completely described ; the Virginia field in detail by Thomas L. Watson, in his paper, Geology of the Virginia Barite-Deposits,&apos; and other fields in abstract., including statistics of production and references to current literature, by various authors .2 There have also been published a few details of the occurrence of barite in the lead-mines of Washington county, Mo.3 The other accounts of this district are erroneous and meager, and since this field is the most important one in the United States at the present time, a detailed description of the local geology seems doubly desirable. Barite-deposits are scattered over nearly the whole of Washington and adjoining counties, but. the product, is all mined from the areas indicated upon the sketch-map, Fig. 1, and is shipped from the stations of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain &. Southern railway, between Blackwell and Potosi, from 45 to 60 miles SW. of St.. Louis. The topography is for the most part gently rolling, with slightly graded streams, usually less than 200 ft. below the higher hill-tops. THE following review covers published information on pressing of metal powders at room temperature. Only those operations are considered which occur between the time the powder is filled into the cavity and the compact is ejected from the die. Thus, this review does not concern hot pressing, coining or sizing feed or flow problems, commercial presses nor designs. It was also necessary to disregard to a large extent the effect of pressing on subsequent operations and on properties after sintering. The pressing operation is considered independently in its function to compact loose metal powder into useful shapes which can subsequently be handled. There are some comments by the writer in connection with a few of the findings quoted in the literature in order to stimulate thought and discussion. The selection of references quoted in the text is in some cases arbitrary although an attempt was made to favor papers containing novel ideas, techniques or results which may stimulate future research. In order to enable the reader to check further into the subjects mentioned, the original, rather extensive, bibliography is appended even though not all the references are touched on in the printed version of this review. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH The equipment used by various workers, for example a die design created by Bridgman,22 is very interesting. The die insert has a conical external surface. The vertical pressure exerted on the punch transmits itself to the die which in turn is pushed harder into its tapered retainer. Thus, the higher the pressure exerted on the punch, the higher also the pressure exerted inwards on the die inserts. In as much as this pressure counteracts the internal pressure from the compact the two stresses balance each other so that it is possible to obtain tremendous pressures without breaking the die. The die collar was made from an oil hardening tool steel, heat treated to a tensile strength of some 300,000 psi. The die was closed at the bottom by a plug made from special tool steels. Bridgman found that there is no steel which will withstand a compressive stress of 700,000 psi without continuous slow flow or immediate fracture. Therefore, the only material suitable for use in the pressing punch was sintered carbide. In view of the ingenious design it was possible to use special tool steel as die material. Jones22 raises the question whether this method of pressing has practical application in powder metallurgy. Al- though these tremendous pressures cannot readily be utilized without many special precautions, the tapered die and retainer idea is believed to be useful even for lower pressures. TO THE AMERICAN MINING CONGRESS. AMERICAN INSTITUTE OE MINING ENGINEERS. MINING AND METALLURGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA. The committee that makes this report was appointed at the meeting of the American Mining Congress, at Denver, Colo., in. November, 1906. The appointment had in view the drafting. of a law for the regulation of quarrying and metalliferous mining under the police laws of the States, with the hope that the uniform adoption of such a law could tend to reduce the number of accidents in mining. Since its. appointment, the committee has had&apos; under serious and continuous consideration the matter with which it was charged. At the meetings 0f the American Mining Congress in 19o7, 1908 and 1909, it reported progress. At the meeting in 1909 it was authorized to present its report not only to the American Mining Congress, but also to the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the. Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and to present its report in printed form during the interim between meetings of the American Mining Congress. The committee collected from the officials of the States of the Union copies of their mining laws. With the assistance of the Engineering and Mining Journal copies of the laws 0f Great Britain, the Transvaal, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, New aland, and certain European countries were also obtained. These laws were subjected to careful study. The first publication of the committee was a summary of the more important metalliferous mining laws 0f this country. Upon the basis of the existing laws of the States of the Union, Great Britain, and the English speaking colonies, a tentative draft. was prepared and printed in limited number in 1909, for convenience in securing the advice and criticism of a considerable number 0f persons engaged in the mining industry. In this way valuable suggestions were received. At the request of the chairman of this committee, Mr. Frederick L. Hoffman, statistician of the Prudential Insurance Company, of Newark, N. J., summarized and reviewed the available statistics of fatalities in metalliferous mining in the United States. Mr. Hoffman&apos;s report was published in the Engineering and Mining

SO much has been written recently about the use of silver to replace scarce metals that certain facts about silver and its uses should be of interest. Figures for the production and use of silver, taken from the Handy & Harman annual reviews of the silver market, are given in Table 1. It will be seen that the rate of production has remained fairly constant and has been affected in recent years by the production of base metals, of which silver is a by-product. In each of the years 1937, 1938, and 1939, the U.S. Government acquisitions alone exceeded the entire world production, the difference, of course, being made up by imports of previously accumulated stocks. In 1940 and 1941 the U. S. Government acquisitions plus the United States and Canadian uses in the arts and industries exceeded the Western Hemisphere production. The U.S. Government pays a premium price for silver newly mined in the United States, at present 71.11c. compared with the price of 35&apos;/8c. for foreign silver, with the result that the current U. S. production is not used commercially for the arts and industries. At the time this is written (June 1942) there is much uncertainty as to the future effect of this situation.

RESEARCH in the steel industry, as in other lines of manufacturing, has for its principal purpose the increasing of profits. That is what manufacturing companies are for, and all departments of the organization must be so coordinated as to lead to profitable operation. To divide a payroll into productive and non-productive labor is misleading. Productive labor, in fact, is necessary labor, and non- productive labor is the labor we can get along without. One might as well say that the steering wheel is not a part of an automobile as to say that the directing minds of an industry are non-productive. Legitimate manufacturing profits in a steel company or any other company are the reward that the public pays for service rendered or risk taken. The desire for profits is the impelling motive that leads investors .to take risks and build up industries that give employment to others. Every department of a company, be it executive, manufacturing, financial, sales, or research, must contribute to the one end which brings success-profits.

The basic study from which this paper was prepared was started as the result of the growing need throughout the world for increasing quantities of energy in all forms. Quite obviously, natural forms of energy that are readily available at low development cost are those in greatest demand. The underdeveloped countries — and particularly those having little or no petroleum resources — are the countries in which the most interest is being shown in the newer energy sources. One of the least expensive energy sources is natural geothermal steam.&apos;-* Although this form of energy has been recognized for centuries, it has been only during the past 20 years that serious efforts have been made to harness it. Natural geothermal steam energy in Italy, New Zealand, Mexico, Japan, and California is now being produced through wells to drive turbines and generate electricity. Further, active exploration for natural geothermal steam is being conducted in Hawaii, Fiji, Taiwan, Chile, Russia, Greece, and Katanga. It is surprising to find that most geothermal steam exploration is in the "steam seep" stage. That is, surface studies are made and exploratory wells are drilled in the general area of steam seeps. However, in the larger geothermal steam areas, there have been efforts to apply the most modern geological and reservoir engineering principles in order to define the reservoir parameters, particularly those relating to estimates of reserves and future productivity. This paper is concerned with the development of appropriate equations and techniques to facilitate these estimates. Production of natural steam or hot water presents problems different from those experienced in the production of oil and gas. For example, steam or hot water systems may be essentially single-component systems, while hydrocarbon systems are most frequently multicomponent fluid systems. Heat effects are much larger for water than for hydrocarbon systems; and the natural steam production may or may not be isothermal, while production of petroleum reservoirs is considered normally to be isothermal. Petroleum reservoir engineering principles may be applied to natural steam or hot water reservoirs if the inherent differences in the systems are considered. The basic considerations involved in geothermal steam reservoir engineering are: thermodynamics, physical and thermal properties of water, materials and energy balances, fluid influx, and performance matching and predicting. I WAS asked by the chairman of one of the Sessions on Employment Problems to talk about the viewpoint of the foreign workingman. I am not a workingman. I have never done what a work-hand might call an honest day&apos;s labor; that is, I have never been in a factory or manufacturing plant or in a mine, though in truth, hard work and I are well acquainted. I was a soldier, am an engineer, have long been actively interested in the most important waterway construction in the near East, have served politics and diplomacy, written books and lectured at universities. My knowledge of the foreign workingman in this country comes from the fact that my own compatriots here at various times came to me and appealed for advice and help, and last year I was asked by the employment manager of a corporation to undertake a welfare job at one of their plants. I went out, saw the plant, talked with the superintendent and outlined certain of my ideas which he personally heartily approved, but which did not find favor with those higher up. I approach the subject of the foreign workman&apos;s point of view with the understanding that the industrial employer&apos;s effort is for the maximum of efficiency. I am conversant with labor conditions abroad both in industry and agriculture. What I have learned of industrial conditions in America as they affect the foreign immigrant has been chiefly gathered from the cases referred to of foreign workmen who from time to time have come to me with their troubles. In the course of those investigations, in order to give whatever help or advice was possible, I have been impressed with the fact that the great United States industries evidently had- pot yet sufficiently recognized the value of studying the conditions of the workingman in the lands of his origin across the seas. A careful study of that which could be called the moral element in connection with its foreign labor would give industry a knowledge of the man&apos;s reason for coming, what&apos; grievances he brings with him, his hopes for a future, and the peculiar character of his capacities. The employer would thereby be enabled to meet the man, to be helpful to him, to aid him and at the same time promote industrial efficiency, inasmuch as a workman who believes that he is being dealt with humanly and squarely is contented and satisfied and will give willingly, and even with pride, the best that is in him; justice and a fair deal is all the man wants.

On Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea, Bougainville Copper Ltd. (BCL) has successfully applied electronic data processing (EDP) techniques to pit operations and mine planning. Though the EDP program is not complete, BCL has realized significant improvements in short and long range mine planning, and equipment and manpower utilization. About 80% of BCL&apos;s 4000 employees are Papua New Guinea nationals, and most have little education or training. The operational characteristics of the computer equipment, however, have been quickly adapted by users with low educational standards.

WAR undoubtedly accelerates metallurgical progress, although its most obvious effect is a tremendous waste of materials. The necessity for restrictions in normal uses of metals results in a search for substitutes or for enhanced properties that will make a limited supply last longer. An insatiable demand for more metal to be produced more quickly favors trial of new processes, new metallurgical tools, and new methods of fabrication. Greatest advance is made, of course, in practical physical and process metallurgy. Theoretical or fundamental research necessarily must take a secondary position, and is so regarded in this review. It is not that developments in theoretical physical metallurgy are lacking entirely, but, following the same trend noted in other countries as they entered war activities, attention in the U.S.A. has been shifted strongly to those developments having an immediate practical application.
