"Melt convection and macrosegregation in casting of a large steel ingot is numerically simulated. The simulation is based on a previously developed model for multicomponent steel solidification with melt convection, and involves the solution of fully coupled conservation equations for the transport phenomena in the liquid, mush, and solid. Heat transfer in the mold and insulation materials, as well as the formation of a shrinkage cavity at the top are taken into account. The numerical results show the evolution of the temperature, melt velocity, and species concentration fields during solidification. The predicted variation of the macrosegregation of carbon and sulfur along the vertical centerline is compared with measurements from an industrial steel ingot that was sectioned and analyzed. Although generally good agreement is obtained, the neglect of sedimentation of free equiaxed grains prevents the prediction of the zone of negative macrosegregation observed in the lower part of the ingot. It is also shown that the inclusion of the shrinkage cavity at the top is important in obtaining good agreement between the predictions and measurements.IntroductionMacrosegregation in large steel ingots is one of the most well-known and now classical problems in the field of solidification and casting [1]. Commonly found macrosegregation patterns in steel ingots are a positively segregated zone at the top, negative segregation near the bottom in the equiaxed zone, inverse segregation near the ingot surface, V-segregates along the centerline, and A-segregates in the columnar zone [2, 3]. It is well established that the macroscopic transport of species leading to macrosegregation can occur by a variety of mechanisms, including thermally and solutally driven natural convection of the melt in the mushy zone, flow due to solidification contraction, and the sedimentation of free equiaxed crystals. Fredriksson and coworkers [ 4,5] provide recent overviews of the solidification transport phenomena and macrosegregation in ingot casting."

Blasting as a process is the emplacement of industrial explosives into blast holes suitably located to a free surface and detonated. Every blast hole containing a certain amount of explosive charge undergoes impulsive loading when detonated and results in the dynamic transfer of a powerful shock wave to the surrounding rock. It is the shock wave that brings about rock breakage when the tensile stress produced upon reflecting from the change in material density or free face overcomes that of rock material tensile strength. However, this shock wave comes along with unwanted destructive consequences such as damage to remaining rock, ground vibration, noise and fly rock. The above mentioned consequences pose a great threat to the Community of Wusakile, Kitwe as Mopani Copper Mines Plc wishes to increase its production by expanding the pit towards the community that lies within 150 m (164 yd) from the pit rim. As a requirement from the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA), all blasting operations close to the community must maintain at least below the maximum vibration threshold of 10 mm/s (0.3937 in/s) PPV-Peak Particle Velocity or else risk closure of the mine (AMC,2009). In order to satisfy the above statement, a good understanding of explosives is required. This paper therefore presents the phenomenology of rock breakage by explosives with much emphasis on electronic blasting and how best this process can be controlled in densely populated communities. Factors affecting maximum projection distance such as, size of the fragment, shape of the fragment, angle of projection, the state of confinement of an explosive charge, were also studied. In addition, design faults, deviation in implementation and unforeseen geological conditions were also considered. The paper discusses the above facts based on research.

Cyanide heap leaching is the predominant technology used in processing low-grade gold ores. During closure ora heap leach operation, residual cyanide must be removed from the process and waste solutions, as well as the heap. Biological cyanide oxidation is a proven, economical technology for destroying cyanide in process and waste waters and spent heaps; The use of biological cyanide degradation eliminates the need for toxic or corrosive chemical oxidizers and has- been implemented at full scale at treatment costs usually <$0.50/1,000 gal. The Applied Biosciences biological cyanide destruction (BCND?) process has been demonstrated to effectively treat cyanide, concentrations up to 350 mg/L. Treated process solutions and wastewaters also contained other contaminants such as arsenic, copper, iron, silver. selenium, mercury, nitrate and zinc, much of which was removed in the cyanide degradation process. Under optimal conditions, microorganisms can rapidly oxidize free cyanide in some process solutions from over 250 mg/L down to 0.1 mg/L in 4 to 5 hr. Cyanide is degraded to ammonia and carbon dioxide, with 50%ofthe cyanide carbon liberated as C02. In general, carbon tank based bioreactors degrade cyanide at significantly higher rates than process or wastewater pond configured treatments, which usually degrade cyanide-more rapidly than in heap treatments. Investigation of cell-free enzyme preparations as an alternative to live microbial cyanide degradation shows promise. Advantages of enzymes over live microbes for cyanide degradation include: (I) the ability to tolerate and degrade higher cyanide concentrations (> I ;000 mg/L), (2) nutrients to support live microbial cells are not required, (3) the effects of other toxic contaminants, such as metals, found in mining waters-are eliminated and (4) the potential for greatly increased kinetics.

"Experiments were carried out to determine the long-term effect of instillation of 500 mg of generic bituminous, anthracite, quartz, or titanium dioxide (Ti02) dust on the composition of pulmonary surfactant. Dust was instilled in the caudal lobe of the right lungs of female pigtailed macaque monkeys (Macaca nemestrina). The composition of surfactant isolated from cell-free bronchoalveolar lavage (CF-BAL) samples obtained from right lungs (dust exposed) at various times over the following year was compared with that of surfactant isolated from CF-BAL from left lungs (dust free) . Little change was seen in the amount of surfactant-associated lipid phosphorus as a result of exposure to dust. Exposure to quartz, anthracite, or Ti02 dust induced a significant increase in the total amount of protein in the surfactant-enriched fraction. The relative amount of specific proteins was also altered: surfactant-associated protein A decreased, and the amount of the heavy and light chains of immunoglobulin molecules (identified by NHiterminal amino acid sequence analysis) increased. These changes were visible more than a year after instillation of quartz and at least 3 months after instillation of anthracite dust. Despite variation in the responses of the individual animals, the changes observed might serve as an indicator of the severity of the effect of exposure of the lung to mineral dust and/or to pathogens. It functions to reduce surface tension and may help to prevent pulmonary edema [19] and to protect against infection [13]. The importance of surfactant to normal Jung function is illustrated by the fact that neonates lacking appropriate surfactant undergo respiratory distress and do not survive without clinical support."

"The treatment of high-grade copper gold-bearing ores is practiced extensively. However, due to low concentration of copper the application of a separate process for copper recovery can make this process uneconomical. The copper, in particular: in oxide minerals, intensively bounds with cyanide during conventional cyanidation. In this case, cyanide is not able to react with precious metals and the consumption of cyanide increases. The resulting copper cyanide complexes have a negative effect on the recovery of gold. Due to decreasing of the process parameters, a repeated use of the recycled solutions can be hindered, especially in the case of heap leaching. The technology of copper removal from the process solutions with simultaneous regeneration of free cyanide from copper-cyanide complex and producing of a saleable high-grade copper concentrate was developed. An important feature of this technology is simplicity, the absence of complex or dangerous operations and the use of common reagents. The choice of equipment depends on the ore treatment option: heap or vat leaching. Also, simpler equipment schemes are available. The studies, tests and industrial practice show that if the concentration of copper can be decreased down to the first numbers of mg per ppm or lower, it is reasonable to maintain the process copper grade in the recycled solutions at 30-50 mg/L. In this case, recycling of cyanide-bearing solutions is unlimited. The regeneration of free cyanide from that of bound with copper and other cyanide complexes is 95-98%. The grade of copper in the concentrate is 55-60%. This technology is an economically competitive option, in particular: with the account of the sales of copper concentrate. The removal of copper has a positive effect on gold recovery, especially during heap leaching. In addition to, this offers significant benefits in reduced costs."

"IntroductionInhalation of crystalline silica is often associated with the development of pulmonary disease (Ziskind et al., 1976). Recently, it has been proposed that freshly sheared silica .may have surface properties that make it more reactive with lung tissue than aged silica, and that this unique reactivity ·of freshly crushed silica enhances its pathogenicity. A recent study in our laboratory strongly supports this theory (Vallyathan, et al., 1988a; 1988b). We found that grinding of silica cleaves bonds in a silica tetrahedral lattice generating reactive free radicals sites on the surface of the silica particles. The presence of surface radicals on freshly ground silica was monitored by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The ESR signal generated from fresh silica in air is characteristic of Si-0 and Si radicals. Evidence, i.e., the ESR signal after the addition of a spin trap (DMPO) and its sensitivity to ethanol, indicates that these silicon-based surface radicals can react with water to form hydroxyl radicals (OH). Results also indicate that these surface radicals make fresh silica more cytotoxic than aged silica; i.e., fresh silica causes more membrane damage as evidenced by hemolysis and lipid peroxidation. Therefore, the presence of reactive sites on the surface of freshly cleaved silica may play a significant role in its pathogenicity.If surface· free radicals are related to cytotoxicity, then screening dusts for the existence of such radicals may predict their relative pathogenicity. Since an ESR spectrometer is not available to many laboratories, the objective of this study was to develop a quick and simple technique to monitor the existence of reactive surface sites on dust. The technique chosen was the measurement of chemiluminescence using a liquid scintillation counter; i.e., an instrument which·would be accessible to most investigators."

Annually it is formed more than 95 Mt of clinkers in iron and steel industry of Russia, including 79 Mt of clinkers in blast-furnace, steelmaking, foundry and ferroalloy productions. Complex development of clinkers will provide not only extraction of valuable components, but also preservation of ecosystems. Processing of solid slags is realized, as a rule, in a cold condition by mechanical methods only including stage-by-stage crushing of slag on devices, working on principles of compression and shift (jaw and roll crushers). However it doesn?t provide the complete extraction of metals from clinkers. The intensification of decomposition, in our opinion, can be provided under the use of the devices working on a principle of free kick. At such influence on a material, its destruction occurs on micro cracks, sides of cohesion that is there is a selective destruction of the components possessing various resistances to impact. Decomposition of a piece on the basis of free kick about a material or metal is realized in centrifugal-shock crushers and mills of research-and-production association ?Ural Center?. The share of the joints sharply lowering the efficiency of enrichment thus is minimal. The efficiency of application is proved by morph-metrical measurements with the help of system of image analysis ?SIAMS-600? and physical-mechanical tests of clinkers and their components (impact strength, micro hardness). The experience of application the devices of centrifugal-shock crushing for processing clinkers in blast-furnace, martin and converter productions of Open Society MMC, clinkers of rough-edged copper melt of Joint-Stock Company "Karabashmed" and aluminium clinkers of Joint-Stock Company « Samara plant of aluminium alloys » has allowed to confirm the efficiency of application these devices for selective decomposition of metallurgical clinkers and the opportunity of using clinkers as resource of ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy.

"A pneumoconiosis is best defined as the accumulation of dust in the lungs and the tissue's reaction to iu presence. Thus, silicosis is the name given to the fibrotic disease of the lungs caused by inhalation of dust containing silicon dioxide, primarily in the free crystalline form. Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), which was originally thought to be a variant of silicosis, results from inhalation of coal mine dust that usually contains relatively small amounts of free crystalline silica.HISTORYSilicosis is the older and more well known of these mineral pneumoconiosis. In contrast, CWP was not recognized as different from silicosis until the pivotal work of Collis and Gilchrist. 26 They noted that coal trimmers, i.e., special stevedores who leveled coal in the holds of ships at the Cardiff and Swansea docks in Wales, developed identical nodules on the chest radiograph to those of underground miners. The difference was that these men had never worked underground and that the coal was washed before it was loaded into ships; thus, it was unlikely that these men were exposed to silica. Gough54 examined the lungs of coal trimmers who died and found that the histologic appearance of the pulmonary lesions was distinctly different from the whorled nodules seen in silicosis. Gough,"" and subsequently Heppleston,"" then showed that the lung lesions in coal trimmers were similar to those in underground coal miners and different from those of classical silicosis. Nagelschmidt 78 analyzed the mineral content of miners' lungs that became available at autopsy. These studies caused him to propose a scheme in which the relative proportions of silica, other minerals, and/or coal deposited in the lungs determined the type of pulmonary response which develops, i.e., classical silicosis, mixed-dust disease, or CWP."

"The effect of capillarity-driven diffusion on the recalescence of mushy zones is studied in pure materials. The solid-liquid mixture is formed by rapid partial solidification of an initially undercooled melt, and the ratio of the two phases is subsequently maintained constant by an externally imposed adiabatic constraint. A novel technique has been developed that permits tracking of the kinetics of the diffusion-controlled evolution process in situ using precision temperature measurements averaged on a length scale larger than that of the microstructure.The mean ""temperature of a mushy zone is slightly below the bulk equilibrium melting point, and is related to a characteristic length scale of the microstructure through an appropriate statistical average of the GibbsThomson equation. Theoretical considerations indicate that the diffusion controlled recalescence will progress as t- l / 3, where t is time. This behavior is experimentally verified for both succinonitrile (SCN) and ethylene carbonate (ETC), which have markedly different morphologies. The kinetic rate constant is observed to increase monotonically with increasing volume fraction of solid in the two-phase mixtures, although a firm theoretical foundation for this result has not been developed.INTRODUCTIONA dispersed multiphase system seeking equilibrium will generally contain variations in the local .free energy density. These density variations arise from such factors as variations in the bulk free energies of the phases and the distribution of interfacial energies. In this study, we examine the kinetics of diffusion-controlled recalescence in 1 solid-liquid mixture of a pure substance at its melting point. This type of two-phase system is particularly convenient to analyze because of the well-characterized physical properties of pure phases (crystals and their melts) and their interfacial energies, and the absence of any solutal effects."

Erwin S. SperRy, Bridgeport, Conn.: The analysis of refined copper is a subject of great importance, and has not received the attention it deserves. Copper metallurgists, therefore, will welcome the paper of Mr. Heath with satisfaction. The state of the art of the chemical analysis of copper has been such that consumers, if they could not afford to run any risk, have been obliged to buy copper from the smelter having the best reputation, and a specification for copper to meet certain requirements could not be drawn up by the mere giving of the chemical constituents. Mr. Heath has brought the analysis of the copper to such a state that when a specification calls for copper " equal to Lake copper " one will know immediately what percentage of the pure metal to expect. It seems to be a pretty well established fact that the copper of Lake Superior is practically free from antimony and bitmuth ; and, with the exception of arsenic, the other elements are easily separated from copper by electro-deposition in an acid solution. The authorities differ in regard to the question whether antimony is deposited with the copper in an acid solution. Classen* recommends the employment of a solution containing 10 per cent. of free nitric acid, sp.gr.1.21, and the strength of the current from 0.3 to 0.4 ampere, in order to prevent the other metals from being deposited with the copper; and for this reason, I presume, the method has been generally used. I, myself, have been accustomed to use such a solution for the analysis of copper-alloys, but have found that for such alloys only a small quantity of nitric acid is necessary, if sulphuric acid is present in sufficient amount to give the solution the required conductivity.

Liquid storage tanks are usually located in nearshore or coastal regions with soil profiles containing thick layers of compressible soils. These storage tanks are usually of large diameter up to 90m and carry high loads, and the tanks are supported by heavy deep foundations such as piles. These structures are subjected to huge lateral loads due to wind and earthquake, and any damage to storage tanks with highly inflammable liquids leads to disastrous condition. So, it is important that the top layer of soil (up to the fixity depth) should be strong enough to provide the required lateral load capacity to the pile. In a project for constructing LNG terminal in Odisha containing 2nos of 89m diameter LNG storage tanks supported with pile foundation located near to coastal region, for improving the lateral capacity of existing soil, the top 3m was replaced with compacted engineered fill (GSB). The site was a filled-up area with dredged soil from seabed, the top 5m-10m were soft to medium stiff clay with SPT N less than 10. The lateral design load on pile was 534kN under free head condition. Actual lateral capacity for the strata was around 200kN under free head condition which was less than required capacity as per structural requirements. Therefore, for improving the lateral capacity of pile the top 3m soil is replaced with well compacted engineered fill (GSB) in layers of 150mm and the capacity is proved by conducting initial and routine lateral load tests. This paper describes the properties of the engineered fill used and how the lateral load capacity of pile was improved to meet the design requirement.

When austenite is deformed above the Ae3 temperature, partial amount of it transforms dynamically into ferrite by a displacive mechanism. After unloading, it retransforms back into the stable austenite by a diffusional process. This influences the rolling load which decreases under isothermal condition or does not increase with decreasing temperature as rapidly as expected under cooling. Plate rolling simulations under isothermal and continuous cooling conditions were carried out on a 0.09 wt.% Nb X-70 steel. Pass strains of 0.2 were employed together with interpass times of 10 s, and 30 s for the cooling conditions and 0.3 with interval of 10 s at 900 °C for the isothermal experiments; strain rate of 1 s-1 was used during the simulations. The mean-flow-stress (MFS`s) behavior of both conditions indicates that dynamic transformation and dynamic recrystallization were taking place during straining. The critical strains for the initiation of dynamic transformation fell around 0.06 while the critical strain for DRX was 0.12. It has been shown that ferrite is formed due to the applied deformation of roughing passes and increases its volume fraction throughout the finishing rolling stage. Under cooling conditions, the ferrite formation is also favored as the temperature approaches the Ae3 line. Such ferrite forms when the driving force for dynamic transformation is higher than the total free energy barrier preventing its formation. This obstacle consists of the free energy difference between austenite and ferrite as well as the lattice dilatation work and shear accommodation work. The addition of Nb retards the retransformation of the ferrite into austenite. Moreover, holding times after rolling increases the amount of austenite available for microstructure control on subsequent stages. Massive sulfide ores and Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide precipitates represent two extremes of a spatial continuum of hydrothermal deposition along oceanic ridges. Elemental variations across this continuum are of interest to economic geologists as a prospective geochemical exploration tool. Theoretical considerations suggest that certain physical and chemical parameters can be used to model compositional variations within the far-field (i.e., Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide) component as a function of distance from ridge axis; however, testing and verification of such models generally has been precluded because the few available distal hydrothermal sediment sequences have been sampled at low resolution and/or are highly diluted with biogenic components (e.g., siliceous and calcareous tests). Recent ocean drilling (ODP Leg 145; Sites 885/886) in the North Pacific successfully recovered an extensive record of "biogenic-free" distal hydrothermal precipitates from an area approximately 60 km south of the Chinook Trough at longitude 168.1 °W. Geophysical and geomorphological evidence suggests the Chinook Trough is the southern lithospheric scar marking initiation of late Cretaceous north-south rifting, implying that recovered hydrothermal materials record distal hydrothermal precipitation from the now-subducted Kula-Pacific spreading ridge. The Chinook Trough hydrothermal sequence is a continuous 15 my record of "biogenic-free" hydrothermal Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide precipitation mixed with eolian clays. It was deposited during the late Cretaceous, early Paleocene (80-65 Ma) as the perpendicular distance from ridge axis increased from 75 to 600 km. A high-resolution geochemical analysis of this hydrothermal sequence reveals distinct trends for the up-core (equivalent to increasing distance from ridge) distribution patterns of Fe, Sc, As, and rare earth elements (REE). Sulphuric acid of various concentrations has long been used as a reagent in the determination of olefins and aromatics in hydrocarbon oils4 such as gasoline, kerosene, and neutral oils from coal-tar distillates. Despite its long use, however, there is no general agreement as to optimum conditions and concentration of acid, and numerous methods and modifications have been recommended. In most cases, treatment of the neutral oil with 80 to 90 percent sulphuric acid, followed by distillation to the original endpoint to remove olefin polymers, is recommended for the estimation of unsaturated hydrocarbons. The distillate thus obtained is taken as olefin-free oil and used in later stages of the anlysis. Aromatic hydrocarbons generally are determined in the olefin-free oil by suphonation with more concentrated acid (96 to 100 percent and fuming sulphuric acid are recommended), the hydrocarbons not attacked and removed as water-soluble sulphoric acids being considered as saturated hydrocarbons. In some cases the saturates are examined further by differentiating between cyclic (naphthenes) and acyclic hydrocarbons (paraffins), Generally this is achieved by physical methods, although strong sulphuric acid is known to react preferentially with some types of saturated hydrocarbons. It was the purpose of the present work to make a general study of this type of analysis and to investigate the reactions of hydrocarbons under conditions often used in analyses that employ sulphuric acid reagents. Since previous work is not in good agreement, the optimum concentrations of acid for the different stages of the analysis were determined. Several sulphuric acid methods previously recommended and new modifications were compared, two synthetic solutions being used as the reference oil. The results obtained are presented below under separate headings.

The positions available to meet this demand will depend on the magnitude and organization of the industry. The size of the mining industry, in particular, will depend on a number of factors, including depletion; new discoveries of mineral deposits; beneficiation of new kinds of mineral deposits, based on research; technical improvements, also based on research, enabling the mining of lower grade deposits; and complex social factors. The organization of the industry will depend on its control and management, which may be greatly affected by social conditions and changes, and may include a wider or a narrower use of technical services. The corresponding training or qualifications of graduates, to meet these conditions, calls for a consideration of educational requirements and facilities in relation to the conditions that are likely to occur. Some forecast of the probable future of the Industry, after the war, based on consideration of. the above factors, is necessary as a basis of discussion, since the graduate must find his place in the industry of that time, and find his work in maintaining and improving it, within the existent social framework. Social factors are pressing and? important at present and their future impact is uncertain. In considering these, a few quotations and extracts may be in order. "A new economic order, based on free access to the sources of raw materials, means free use of the world&apos;s wealth by all civilized nations" (The Pope. Also advocated by Churchill and Roosevelt in the Atlantic Charter). "Every citizen should have a voice in the conduct of business or industry which is ?carried on by means of his labour" (Archbishop of Canterbury).

The safe life cycle of a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) is founded on the fundamentals of proper design, construction, operation and closure. Leinster Nickel Operations (Leinster) utilises four active TSF cells that are cycled between filling (deposition), desiccation, and construction to meet a targeted rate of rise. This results in ongoing and consistent raising of the TSF walls. Critical to maintaining the safe life cycle through this consistent wall raising is precision construction and high frequency quality assurance to ensure compliance to design requirements and TSF walls free from defects. Leinster has recently deployed Intelligent Machine Control technology for TSF construction. Advances in Intelligent Machine Control have decreased variability in construction; ensuring variations are within the tolerances of design. The Intelligent Machine Controls are programed to ensure construction conforms to design tolerances of +/-30mm. This level of accuracy provides assurance of borrow area set out, compacted layers are as per design, compaction monitoring is within the zone placed, scarification between layers to prevent lamination is maintained, and batter angles are set to the correct grade. This level of control provides certainty that construction meets the design intent. In conjunction with Intelligent Machine Control, periodic drone surveys are conducted to verify construction against design. Advancement in survey equipment and techniques allow higher frequency, high accuracy survey to be completed on demand by site based personnel. This provides quality assurance through all stages of the construction phases, as well as the final constructed wall, ensuring compliance to design. Combining Intelligent Machine Control with higher frequency quality assurance provides an increased level of certainty that the TSF construction is defect free and within quality specifications. These recent technological advancements in Construction and Quality Assurance ensure cell raises are constructed to the design intent with greater levels of accuracy and precision than ever before.

Everyone forms his own mental picture when the subject of copper is mentioned. To an architect, copper is a warm, enduring metal with a quiet beauty; to the historian, man&apos;s first metal; to the product engineer, the best electrical and thermal conductor of all commercial metals; to the investor, a volatile stock; to the speculator, the daily price quotation; to those in the mining industry, the challenge of producing copper for rising needs in the face of rising costs and lower grades of ore. At this meeting, we will look upon copper as a key raw material in industry, in national defense, in technology, in world trade, and as a principal commodity in the economies of several developing countries. As miners, and most of us here are miners, we are prone to view our role as suppliers of copper. We locate, mine, smelt and refine the metal. In the complexities of today&apos;s world, however, following a period of the longest domestic copper strike in history which caused critical world-wide shortages and widely fluctuating prices; it becomes necessary for all of us to concern ourselves with the whole spectrum of copper affairs -"from mine to consumer " But first we need to look at the miner&apos;s side of the picture -- capacity and production. We will examine these functions in terms of the whole world -- not simply the free world. Nature did not endow all regions of the earth equally, and copper in world trade has a way of ignoring political boundaries. Science and technology, as well, know no national boundaries. It is said that the "Engineering & Mining Journal" has as many readers in the Communist World as in the Free World. Nor is this a one-way street. We presently have available to us in the. U.S., cover-to-cover translations of many Communist World mining and metallurgical journals.
