TWENTY-FIVE years ago the training of an engineer was of interest solely to the educator and to the student entering the field. At that time the engineer's position in society was relatively simple. His training emphasized design and operation and he expected to enter industry to handle the engineering problems of raw materials production, mechanical and product design, and the operation of power plants, factories, transportation and communication systems, and similar phases of industrial activity. He was not concerned with or particularly interested in the problems of management, administration, sales, publicity, industrial relations, or of legislation. To a large degree he was content to leave these matters to self-made businessmen, or men trained in law, finance, or commerce. That period in the evolution of the engineer is now history. It is generally conceded that the modern world is dependent upon engineering technology for its day-to-day survival. The continued operation of facilities on which mankind relies is dependent upon the functioning of mines, utilities, chemical plants, and other factories, all of which require the knowledge and the skills of trained engineers. THE northern anthracite fields, although facing the same economic problems as the southern fields, are confronted with the additional problem of fast dwindling reserves of anthracite which can be conventionally and economically won. The mining of coal which remains in thin beds and the recovery of pillars from areas heretofore considered unrecoverable, either by reason of cost or surface restriction, pose problems of in- creasing importance to the economic life of the northern field operations. Successful approaches have Been made to this problem and other work is being performed that holds promise. There exists in the northern anthracite field millions of tons of solid coal, the recovery of which has not been too successful due to the following inherent operating faults: inability to concentrate producing areas; the great quantities of rock to be cut and handled, lack of consideration of proper sequence and speed of second mining, and the continued use of the mine car as the basis of payment. A mining system that has successfully solved these major problems has been in operation in the Scranton area since 1944. Over 1% million tons have been produced from veins varying from 3 to 4% ft thick by this method, which is known as the multiple panel-triangular system-conveyor mining.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the circumstances leading to fall from equipment injuries in the mining industry. Method: The 2006 and 2007 Mine Safety and Health Administration annual injury databases were utilized for this study whereby the injury narrative, nature of injury, body part injured, mine type, age at injury, and days lost were evaluated for each injury. Results: The majority of injuries occurred at surface mining facilities (~60%) with fractures and sprains/strains being the most common injuries occurring to the major joints of the body. Nearly 50% of injuries occurred during ingress/egress, predominately during egress, and approximately 25% of injuries occurred during maintenance tasks. The majority of injuries occurred in relation to large trucks, wheel loaders, dozers, and conveyors/belts. The severity of injury was independent of age and the median days lost was seven days; however, there was a large range in severity. Impact on industry: From the data obtained in this study, several different research areas have been identified for future work, which include balance and stability control when descending ladders and equipment design for maintenance tasks.

MR. E. L. Longmore (l), in presenting this paper at the Annual General Meeting, suggested that it was neither desirable nor necessary to read any but the briefest portion of the paper. He wished to emphasize that the scale of the milling operations at the Hollinger not only provided several units in continuous operation to ensure that the test work was being carried on under normal conditions, but also provided a large and competent staff to supervise such an extensive experiment and to criticize intelligently the recorded results. He wished to acknowledge the enthusiastic co-operation of the group of assistants whose excellent work was responsible for the confidence with which the conclusions could be presented. The following data were given as a supplement to the published paper. Following conclusion of the test work described in the paper, the size of the balls fed to the mill was changed from 3-in. diameter to 2Yz-in. Within a short time, a gradual rise in the tonnage rate took place and, as no other condition had been changed, the increased tonnage was credited to the changed character of the ball load. At present, the average daily tonnage for the mill with low discharge is 1,507 tons, an increase of 77 tons over the 1,430 tons ground when feeding a 3-in. ball. A similar increase in tonnage should be credited to the high-discharge test, if the 2;Y2-in. ball had been used at that time. This would raise the 1,117 tons ground at that time to a new figure of 1,177 tons. From a study made to determine those factors influencing the rate of pulp flow through the low-discharge mill, it became evident that the ball screen used on the high-discharge mill must have been restricting the flow through the mill, although this was not recognized at the time. Accord-ingly, it was decided to repeat the high-discharge run. Additional length was added to the 21-in. ring grizzly originally used, and the length of the reverse spiral was increased. The end of the grizzly was left open so that, if necessary, excess pulp might flow out. A coarse mesh 3 ft. by 3 ft. flat screen was provided to catch stray balls.

"DEM application in mineral processing has for many years been heavily focused on simulating mills of various types. This method can be used to simulate many other aspects of mineral processing operations and can be used both to enhance understanding of the underlying flows and of issues such a breakage, wear, blockage, product degradation, segregation and mixing. The application of DEM to four important classes of non-comminution problems and equipment commonly found in or near mineral processing plants are described. These are:- Particle transport (examples include a conveyor belt and an inclined screw conveyor)- Sampling (assessment of sample bias for cross-stream samplers)- Separation (the efficiency of vibrating screens)- Storage and reclaim (discharge from a multi-port hopper and segregation in a splitter bin with asymmetric ingoing and outgoing conveyor belts, apron feeders and impact plate)."

"Research at Delft University aims to develop systems for automatic inspection and sorting of bulk solids which can be applied in the mineral processing and recycling industry. A recent development includes an automatic sorter based on airport X-ray inspection technology. It is designed for continuous inspection and sorting of 5 - 150 mm solids and has as objective a cost effective and high capacity on-line inspection and sorting.Dual energy X-ray transmission imaging provides instantaneous data about particle dimensions and the atomic number distribution. The system provides particle thickness and average atomic number on a pixel level at scanning speeds between 250 and 500 lines / second. With existing X-ray components inspection speeds between 0.5 and 2 m/s at approximately 1-meter inspection width and between 1.5*1.5 and 5*5 mm2 sensor resolution can be achieved.Imaging algorithms that were developed by Delft University for applications in recycling, waste cleaning and other applications acquire shape, size distribution and composition data. Currently on-line processing of a product at a rate of around 200 particles per second is possible using a standard PC. Experiments with a demonstration X-ray unit indicated good potential for various applications in solids processing. They include continuous inspection of organic content, sulphur, chlorine, ash, and metal distribution. It is applicable for coal cleaning, ore sorting, industrial minerals, and various applications within waste cleaning and recycling. Dual energy X-ray transmission fundamentals and recent progress in system development and applications are presented."

"Recent developments in the analysis of piled rafts has incorporated the load sharing of the raft and the piles to support the superstructure. In the piled-raft system, piles are cast monolithically with the raft and the load is partly transmitted by the raft to the soil directly below it, and partly by the piles to more competent deep soil. While these piles are effective in increasing the bearing capacity and reducing the settlements, they often lead to significant straining actions at the pile head-raft connection which may constitute the weakest link. An attempt to provide a more economical solution, that at the same time overcomes this weak link, is to disconnect the pile heads from the raft and introduce an intermediate cushion of compacted fill. In this case, the piles are considered as reinforcement to the subsoil and will also act as settlement reducers. This paper investigates the load transfers mechanism of the unconnected piled raft with cushion using ABAQUS finite elements Program. The main objective is to provide an in depth analysis of the raft–soil–pile interactions in multi-layered soil under static and seismic loads. The investigated system provides an economical alternative for traditional connected piled raft foundation, where there is no need to reinforce the piles, no need for pile head demolition or expensive waterproofing of the pile head connection. Cost analyses of unconnected versus connected piled raft systems confirmed a cost savings in the construction that may reach from 50 to 70 percent.INTRODUCTIONDesigners around the world have gained more confidence to use the piled-raft as a more realistic system where the raft and the piles share transferring the superstructure loads to shallow and deep soil layers. A further advancement is to use unconnected piled rafts as another practical and economical alternative to the traditional piled rafts. Unconnected piled raft is also synonymous to settlement reducing piles; or simply, soil improvement piles. Liang et al. (2003) has extended the concept of pile-raft-foundation to a new type of foundation called composite piled raft foundation or unconnected piled raft foundation. The foundation is composed of a sand/gravel cushion sandwiched between the raft and piles. The piles group may contain short and long piles. The short piles are constructed of flexible materials such as soil-cement columns or sand-gravel columns, and are used mainly to improve the bearing capacity of shallow soft soil; the long piles, which are made of relatively rigid materials such as concrete, and their main function is to reduce settlements. The cushion plays an important role in mobilizing the bearing capacity of the subsoil and in modifying the load transfer mechanism of the piles. In Shanghai, China, this system of unconnected piled raft has proved to be quite suitable and effective in coastal areas, where deep soft soil deposits exist."

IN all special branches of the chemical and metallurgical industries, in which large electric furnaces became necessary for carrying out new processes or for the improvement of old ones, the development of the electric furnaces took place on much the same lines. The endeavors to make a success of a new idea brought forth many ingenious designs, which, however, almost without exception, furnished the proof that the safest and shortest way to practical success is the utmost simplicity of construction of the necessary apparatus. Our knowledge of the qualities of materials for building electric furnaces and of the constituents of the furnace-charges, especially their electric conductivity and their chemical affinity . towards one another at high temperatures, is still far from being complete, and from this fact we must conclude that the smaller the number of elements in the construction of a furnace, the fewer the number of unreliable factors both in the construction and in the operation of the electric furnace. This conclusion deserves special attention when an electric furnace for making steel has to be chosen from the constantly growing number of inventions, inasmuch as the chief con¬stituent of steel, the element iron, is a substance which in its liquid phase has so great an affinity fir those elements which are to be removed from the charge, that it is very difficult to comply with the following conditions: 1, to beat the refining-slag to the highest point of its chemical activity ; to prevent the iron from entering the slaw, or, where this cannot be done, to make it enter so that it finally appears in the end-product

ON the morning of Monday, Nov. 9, 1936, two motorcycles, with sirens screeching, - escorted a procession of 70 automobiles from the Colonia Railway Station in Mexico City to the Hotel Geneve. Riding in' the cars were just over 200 visitors- members of the A.I.M.E. and their guests. They had come, via St. Louis, in two special trains from 24 different states for the 146th General Meeting of the Institute. Introduction. THIS study was undertaken on account of the lack of definite knowledge concerning the influence of bismuth on wire-bar copper, and the small elimination of bismuth from copper-matte during the smelting-operations. The early workers who studied the influence of bismuth on copper confined their investigations to malleability and ductility-two physical properties which are related to the others so intimately that their determination is of primary importance. Karsten ' and Levol,2 using bending- and mealleability-tests, seem to have been the first to take up the subject, and while their results are incomplete, they agree in the main with the later work of Hampe.3 The bending-tests used by the first investigators consisted in bending the specimen until it failed. The malleabilitytests were made by beating the material to a knife-edge with a hammer. Hampe not only determined the percentage of bismuth which would cause red-shortness and cold-shortness of the alloy, together with other influences of bismuth on the malleability and ductility of copper, but also took up the influence of the bismuth protoxide, BiO, on copper, and of bismuth sesquioxide, Bi2O3, on the copper protoxide, CuO. Hampe's conclusions of the influences of these two latter compounds of bismuth on copper are as follows "If the protoxide of bismuth be alloyed with metallic copper, it is not changed to metallic bismuth, but remains mechanically distributed throughout the copper.

TWENTY-ONE of the states in the Union, the Territory of Hawaii, and seven provinces of Canada now have in operation laws requiring that professional engineers be registered or licensed. In addition, two states require that civil engineers be registered, and one other state demands registration of structural engineers. Moreover, nearly every year sees additions made to the list. The registration movement, fostered by the American Association of Engineers, now has the powerful, energetic backing of the An1,erican Society of Civil Engineers, which is itself now fostering registration legislation, and there is a strong sentiment in favor of registration in the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Only in the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is anti-registration sentiment, strongly dominant, but many members of this organization are enthusiastic advocates of registration.

CIVILIZATION'S PROGRESS, which has multiplied man's comforts, conveniences, a n d happiness, is based upon the extensive employment of natural minerals and sources of energy. Mineral resources are basic factors in modern economic development, machine industry, international trade and world power. A survey of mineral consumption shows that the United States leads the world in the production and consumption of energy materials, of metals, and of the large and diverse array of earth materials that fall in the nonmetallic mineral group. The use of nonrnetallic minerals exceeded both the metals and the fuels in the long period before the industrial age, but it is only in the last two decades that consumption of non- metals has kept pace with and approximated in value the output of metals. Although the data of production in the first half of the last century are meager and fragmentary, the record of the past fifty years-the period of most rapid growth-is available, and reveals an astounding growth.

Value Engineering on Connecticut DOT’s Walk Bridge selected the trenchless option for utility relocation to address the channel crossing’s environmental concerns. The design and construction considerations of the twin micro-tunnel drives and associated shafts are presented. Key challenges included vertical alignment selection to achieve minimum one-tunnel diameter stable cover within thin glacial till underlying extremely soft clay, limited choice of pipe and joint materials meeting stringent non-metallic conduit requirements, thermal grout backfill application, and the close proximity of temporary trestle piles. Mitigation measures were developed for potential point loading pipe damage from remnant boulder fragments in the annular space.

A laboratory and theoretical study of air decks was carried out to assess the effects of the size and location of air-decks on fragmentation. The degree of fragmentation was found to depend on both factors. As the size of the air-deck increases the degree of fragmentation is reduced relative to a full column charge. However, the reduction is relatively small until a critical size is exceeded. The critical size depends on the strength and structure of the surrounding material. A critical air-deck length of 30-35% of the original explosive column was determined for the model materials used in the study. A theoretical explanation of the results was derived based on pressure decay rate relationships. The location of the air-deck also influences fragmentation. The interaction and oscillation of the two shock fronts from the top and bottom charges mean that mid-column air-decks produce better fragmentation for the same air-deck length and explosive loading as top-column or bottom-column air-decks.

This paper showcases how the orientation of a tunnel alignment has a significant impact on how in-situ geological stress can impact the excavation of a tunnel from the contractor’s point of view and how geological features influence gas inflow to the alignment over time.

Rail access to Ontario International Airport (ONT) has long been a goal of San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) to increase public transit options to ONT and provide incoming ONT passengers improved access to San Bernardino County and the greater Southern California region. This paper describes the planning for the Design-Build-Operate-Maintain (DBOM) delivery of an emerging technology tunnel connection between the Rancho Cucamonga Metrolink station and ONT. The paper discusses key technical considerations, challenges, and opportunities; conceptual configuration development; and construction planning and establishment of the footprint for the underground connection.

Nowadays, small diameter tunnels are increasingly considered in pipeline projects as an alternative for sensitive crossings or when soil conditions limit the use of conventional pipeline installation methods like HDD. Safety concerns play a key role, especially for inner-city installations. Pipe jacked microtunnels and small segment lining tunnels can serve as casing tunnels if access is required during construction for the change of cutting tools in challenging ground conditions or for maintenance of the pipeline in operation. Small diameter tunneling solutions offer a high degree of flexibility for alignment design in terms of geology, length and radius.

Trackless battery powered haulage vehicles have been in operation in British coal mines principally for longwall face transfer and personnel transportation. Changes within the industry have resulted in the introduction of room and pillar coal mining methods and the introduction of increasingly heavier longwall roof supports This has resulted in the introduction of: • Battery powered coal haulage machines, which, without the need for trailing cables, increase productivity within room and pillar mining. • Battery powered longwall shield haulers which are capable of carry ing the heaviest shield supports currently being utilised within the British coal mining industry. The conventional machines have been adapted from an American design to meet the requirem ents of European legalisation. This has seen the- emphasis being placed upon the supplier with the European M achinery Directive being introduced, necessitating the assigning of a 'C E ' m ark to each vehicle. Battery vehicle technology has advanced to meet the demands of the ever changing market and will no doubt he further adapted to meet the requirement of the British coal mining industry.
