PanAust’s Phu Kham copper-gold operation (Phu Kham) in Laos is currently limited by throughput in the Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mill. The ability to accurately predict SAG mill throughput (throughput) is therefore critical to accurately forecast copper and gold production. During the fourth quarter of 2016 the proportion of hard unweathered rocks in the mill feed increased, resulting in a period of lower than expected throughput. These low throughput rates prompted a study with the aim of identifying a practical solution for throughput predictions. The study identified an empirical modelling approach based on actual SAG mill throughput rates. The empirical model was then optimised by linear programming to identify the ideal feed blend of unweathered rocks to achieve a maximum SAG mill throughput.Rock strength was the initial focus of the throughput study at Phu Kham because previous studies had identified a strong link between rock strength and throughput. It was determined that there was insufficient valid data to adequately model but sufficient data to qualitatively characterise rock strength. The data identified that the weathering and lithology had a controlling influence on the rock strength. Complicating throughput predictions were operational improvements (changes to blasting and mill settings) implemented in response to the lower than expected throughput. This created uncertainty with the throughput equations. A self-learning empirical modelling method was developed to predict the throughput by incorporating fundamental rock properties with operational practices and improvements. The method is based on the proportion of mill feed with similar weathering and lithology (a proxy for comminution performance) and the actual mill throughput using the SAG mill as the analytical instrument. The modelling method simultaneously incorporated the sum and interaction of unmodelled influences including blasting, crushing and mill settings. The empirical modelling method worked at Phu Kham because the lithology and weathering has an intuitive and observable controlling influence on SAG mill throughput. Ferric (Fe3+) ions are omnipresent in flotation circuits. Depending on pH and the nature of the ore body, Fe3+ ions may play a role in the adsorption of thiol collectors on sulfide minerals. To investigate this possibility, a two-compartment galvanic coupling cell was designed. This cell was used to monitor changes in contact angle of a sulfide mineral in one compartment, while varying concentrations of the Fe3+ ions in the other. The results showed that Fe3+ ions promote xanthate adsorption as indicated by the increase in contact angle. Implications of this finding in sulfide mineral flotation in general will be discussed.

"Current and future operational processes in the mining and underground construction sector are under the influence of the prevalent competition and the acute necessity of optimization approaches concerning corporate and project processes. Besides general construction procedures, especially underground construction procedures and procedures in the field of deep shaft construction are high-profile. Those processes describe high technical challenges as well as increased requirements to occupational safety and health. Therefor an occupational safety management, which should be adjustable to the company itself and adaptable to all kinds of projects, shall be created. The creation of such an occupational safety management would lead to an economically optimized and safe (within the scope of OSH law) implementation of internal activities for the performance of construction services underground and in the field of deep shaft construction. With this approach the satisfaction of the high safety request as well as the demand for process optimization, as part of keeping the own competitiveness, will be satisfied successfully at once. PROJECT BACKGROUND Introduction The health and safety protection as well as occupational safety look back on a long historical development, which had brought more important sectors and developments during the last years, not only in Germany but also on the European and international level. The accident insurance protected by law has already been reported in 1884, which is astonishing early. The launch time point is strongly connected with the on-going economic development in the end of the 18th century, but above all this increased in the 19th century. The progress of occupational safety and especially the interest in the integration and the concentrated consideration of occupational safety and the health and safety protection in the company process is strongly visible during the 19th century and directly connected to the industrial revolution. [9] The industrial revolution and with that the development of work places lead to changing demands in the field occupational safety and health and safety protection. Insufficient security precautions caused problems in the industrial revolution, such as personnel and material losses as well as serious injuries and their consequences. These and the fundamental economic endeavours of the entrepreneurs lead therefore to the important step to develop an occupational safety system. [9] The prevailing basic ideas seize the insufficient security precaution of work places as well as the economical and profitable ideas of the entrepreneurs and bring them together. From this the necessary entrepreneur’s task comes into being and that is bringing the work conditions to the way that life and health of employees are not in danger. [9]"

"Ground improvement has undoubtedly become a cost-efficient and effective solution to support the development of poor soil sites. Ground improvement elements, such as Controlled Modulus Columns (CMCs), replace piles by improving the subsurface soils and reducing settlement. As ground improvement becomes more popular, the applications become more creative and ground improvement is being used to control settlements under large structures with tight settlement tolerances.In this paper, we will discuss the use of CMCs to support two (2) large industrial warehouses where soil conditions would normally lead to the use of deep foundations and a structural slab, grade beams, and hung utilities to prevent excess settlement. Each of the sites we will discuss had poor soil conditions in the form of very soft or compressible soil, heterogeneous fill of varying thickness, and environmental contamination. At each site, we developed a design that would allow for the use of Controlled Modulus Columns (CMCs) with a Load Transfer Platform (LTP) in place of the previously-proposed deep foundations. The use of the CMCs also allowed for the use of spread footings and slab on grade construction. The benefits of this value-engineering approach include economy in the foundation system, risk mitigation by not disturbing contaminated soils requiring expensive removal, and ease of access for future sub-slab upgrades with new tenants. Additionally, the use of recycled concrete aggregate as an LTP is more environmentally friendly than placing structural slabs with heavy steel reinforcement.Designing for the settlement of large warehouses is challenging because it requires changing how we typically perform our designs. For most structures, the slab loads are relatively light when compared to the footing loads, whereas for warehouses, the slab is heavily loaded compared to the relatively light footing loads. Thus, it becomes essential to perform three-dimensional analyses to confirm that the proposed CMC layout will provide uniform support of the slab and footing across a variety of loading scenarios (loaded bays vs unloaded or travel bays). The complexity of the designs for these warehouses generated interest in conducting large area load tests over a grid of multiple columns. The performance of the area load tests provided invaluable information on the effectiveness of the LTP and CMC spacing. In this paper, we present a general description of CMC ground improvement, the differences between ground improvement and traditional pile foundations, our typical design methodology for CMC design, and the modifications to that methodology for warehouses."

The Bureau of Mines investigated chemical methods for producing high- purity gold from precious-metal-bearing zinc precipitates and steel wool cathodes. Precious-metal-bearing zinc precipitates and steel wool cathodes are unrefined products from conventional cyanidation and heap leaching-cyanidation operations. The zinc precipitates contained 14,40 pct Au and 0.35 pct Ag. The precious-metal-bearing steel wool cathodes contained 20.65 pct Au and 4.84 pct Ag. The precipitates and cathodes were treated with dilute acid to solubilize the silver and/or base metals. The gold-bearing residue was leached in dilute aqua reqia to solubilize the gold. High-purity gold was precipitated from the aqua regia solution with oxalic acid, sulfurous acid, sodium bisulfite, and gaseous sulfur dioxide. The leaching-precipitation experiments recovered 99.9 pct of the gold. The gold precipitates ranged in fineness from 997 to 999 fine. The chemical refining method provides a viable technique for the smaller operator to produce high-purity gold without using pyrometallurgical refining methods.

THROUGHOUT the Colonial era, Philadelphia was easily , the leading city of North America, and it still held that position at the end of the period, with a population of about 25,000, though closely pressed by Boston, which had slightly over 20,000, and New York, which had nearly as many. It was the center of a region in which mineral industry was important. Thomas Rutter's bloomery, built in the Schuylkill valley in 1716, was quickly followed by many others, and during the Colonial period at least 20 blast furnaces, 45 forges, and iron- works of other types were built in eastern Pennsylvania, which easily led all the other colonies in iron manufacture. During the Revolutionary period others were erected as far west as Fort Loudon, in the Cumberland c alley.^ After 1800 the rapid development of the anthracite mining industry profoundly affected Philadelphia's, development, since transportation of the coal was then necessarily by water, and the streams of the anthracite . regions mostly flowed into either the Schuylkill or the Delaware Rivers. With an abundant near-by supply of coal and iron, with the seat of government, which had been there since 1774, and with a National Bank established there in 1791, one would have seemed safe in prophesying, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, that Philadelphia would permanently remain the leading city of the United States. Education in Philadelphia was at first wholly in the hands of the Quakers, who had established a "Public School" there in 1689, but in November 1739 George Whitefield, who had created a sensation in England by his preaching, though only 24 years old, passed through Philadelphia on his way to Georgia to found an orphan school there. Acidic mine waters containing solubilized uranium have been observed in many uranium and some copper mines. In every case, the sulphide and iron oxidizing bacterium, Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, was also present. This bacterium provides the ferric iron required to oxidize u+4, both by oxidizing available ferrous iron and by oxidizing pyrite or other available sulphide minerals. This latter oxidation also provides sulphuric acid and may increase extraction by exposing more uranium. The enhancement of bacterial activity and the results of some field tests are discussed.

STOPING at Noranda" is a sequel to "Mining at Noranda". "Mining at Noranda", presented in 1937 (1), sketches Noranda's history, metallurgical problems, exploration, mining methods, mining details, pillar extraction, and costs. "Stoping at Noranda" deals in greater detail with our stoping, the use of sub-level drifts instead of benches, and the drilling out of the stopes with jointed rock drill steel and diamond drills. Sun-LEVEL DRIFT STOPING: Sub-level drift stoping is almost universal throughout the mine and is the standard sroping method in both sulphide ore and rhyolite flux ore. The features that have led to the adoption of this standard are: (1) Continuous symmetrical drilling in sub-level drifts with no delay for blasting. (2) Large-tonnage blasts Saturday night after the drillers have left. (3) Comparative freedom from gas and smoke during the working days. ( 4) The daily safety achieved by having all stope drilling done in drifts. (5) The safety and security achieved by drilling out stopes, floors, and pillars before there is any weighting or cracking.

Sungun Copper Mine, which is the second largest copper mining operation in Iran has a large tailings storage facility with a seepage control dam located downstream of the main dam. Surface and groundwater in surrounding area of the tailings storage facility has been monitored for ten years. This paper will discuss the results of the surface and groundwater monitoring and seepage control at the Sungun Copper Mine. The results of the study show that if the tailings storage facility influence the water quality of the rivers, this effect is not significant, so that the prevailing parameters of the measured parameters were within the permissible standard of drinking water in Iran.CITATION:Rashidi Nejad, F, Naraghi, S and Pirouznia, N, 2018. Texas Gulf Sulphur Company's Lee Creek Mine has opened a major phosphate mining district in the Central Coastal Plains of North Carolina (Fig. 1). The ore deposit as it is now known was roughly outlined in 1961 by a Texas Gulf geologist using wire line exploration methods. Slightly uraniferous phosphate materials were detected by a slim-hole gamma ray probe run in numerous farmers' water wells penetrating the formations. A follow-up-core drilling pro- gram determined the economic ore limits to lie in the south central section of Beaufort County beneath 70 feet to 120 feet of unconsolidated sediments. The 50,000 acre deposit is known to contain over two billion tons of phosphate ore amenable to strip mining methods. A part of the deposit underlies several thousand acres of the Pamlico River estuary. The 90 million dollar capital investment plant built by Texas Gulf during 1965-66 included a strip mining operation using a 72-yard walking dragline, a three million product ton per year flotation concentrator, four fluid bed calciners, a sulphuric acid plant (acid for captive use), a phosphoric acid plant, and three solid fertilizer material plants. Shipment to domestic markets is by rail and truck and to over- seas markets by barge to a transshipment terminal at Morehead City, North Carolina. Early mining investigations were conclusive first that the phosphate ore could economically be recovered only by dry strip mining methods, and second that artesian ground waters in the formation (Castle Hayne limestone) underlying the ore would have to be controlled. This report will relate the application of ground water hydrology in depressurizing the Castle Hayne aquifer to facilitate dry strip mining at depths 130 feet below sea level at the Lee Creek Mine.

"Zipf Jr., R.K. and Bieniawski; Z.T., 1989. A fundamental study of respirable dust generation in coal. Min. Sci. Technol., 9: 87-99Black lung disease in coal miners induced by the formation of fine fragments of coal imposes very high human and direct costs. A fundamental understanding of the fracture processes leading to fine-fragment formation in coal by applying principles of fracture mechanics is presented. A four-step hypothesis is proposed which sequentially describes the mechanics of fine-fragment formation during a generic coal material—coal cutting tool interaction. These steps include: (1) development of a crush zone under the tool tip, (2) macrocrack propagation. (3) shear movement along macrocracks, and (4) additional fragmentation from shear. This model contains two sources of fine fragments, namely crushing under the tool tip and shearing along the macrocrack surfaces. Three critical assumptions are made that require experimentation. First, the coal material must contain flaws of sufficient density and sufficiently small size to liberate fine fragments by crushing. The following conceptual relationships are proposed between flaw size, spacing and fragmentation: first, the active flaw size must be less than the desired particle size and second, the spacing (or density) must be in the order of the particle size. The second major assumption is that a mixed mode fracture theory will describe the initiation and crack growth direction for the microscopic inherent flaws. The third assumption is that some degree of roughness damage, and interlocking exist along the newly formed macrocrack surfaces such that a small amount of shear movement along that surface leads to additional particle formation at a microscopic scale. Preliminary analysis of the mechanical regime under a cutting tool tip places order of magnitude bounds on the stresses strains, cycle time, stress rates and strain rates. Even though the tool moves and loads the coal material with considerable speed, a quasi-static stress analysis is applicable in this region.Introduction.The generation of fine fragments (respirable dust) during various coal mining processes may lead to the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (black lung disease). The human and direct cost of dust-induced illnesses in coal miners is very large. By several. accounts [1,2] the Federal Government paid out about $12 billion to almost 500,000 coal miners and their beneficiaries between 1970 and 1980. In addition, several states and many coal operators have established their own compensation programs at costs ranging from a few cents to several dollars per ton of coal mined [2]. Since 1980, 'the present liability of the Federal disability trust fund has approached $20 billion and the benefit payments exceed $1 billion per year. There .are also hidden costs due to dust, in the form of increased equipment wear and decreased operator productivity, both of which are due to the poor operating environment. Quantifying these costs may be difficult; however, they may be in the same range as the present pneumoconiosis costs. These high human and direct dollar costs may be prevented or reduced through long term research efforts directed at understanding the generation and control of respirable dust and the incidence of black lung disease."

Comminution is one of the fundamentals of mineral processing, requiring large expenditures to be made on capital equipment, installation, power and maintenance. The trend toward lower grades and higher operating costs, mean mining operations are becoming increasingly marginal. The challenge is to improve and more importantly, utilize crushing and milling technologies that provide for reduced capital and operating costs whilst providing increased unit efficiencies. The Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill presents such an opportunity by providing many of the cost savings and production increases required by its ability to produce a finer mill feed size and realize reduced energy consumption. This paper briefly describes the operation of the Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill and reviews its benefits towards improving the efficiency of crushing and milling operations.

"The Broadmeadow punch longwall coal mine in Central Queensland Australia has experienced significant highwall movement associated with the effect of longwall subsidence when the longwalls approach their final position close to the open-cut highwall. In response to this movement, Broadmeadow employed two types of broadscale highwall monitoring (radar and laser scanners) to provide full coverage measurement throughout three consecutive longwalls approaching the highwall. This was to attain a better understanding of the mechanism causing the movement and potentially enable prediction of instability. Results from the monitoring found the highwall is displaced to magnitudes unlike those typically measured in open-cut mining and in direct contrast with typical longwall subsidence behaviour.This paper discusses the ground movements measured, monitoring methods used, safety measures established, as well as theorising the failure mechanism. Recommendations are made for mine and pit designs for future punch longwall layouts. The paper shows how the movements measured are more aligned to some measurements made during stream valley closure studies previously presented at the ICGCM and challenge the mechanisms suggested by previous literature.BACKGROUNDThe mining of longwalls under or adjacent to large voids (e.g., stream valleys, escarpments, or cliffs) is commonly associated with heavily vegetated or steep surface areas. In areas of extreme topographic variance, access to traditional survey pegs and stations or even new radar or laser technologies is limited. In addition, seldom have the longwall layouts aligned themselves parallel or perpendicular to the surface feature, making interpretation of any available surface movement data more complicated.The punch longwall layout (Figure 1) is also quite uncommon (only undertaken at a small number of longwall mines in Australia) but creates the perfect configuration to enable a somewhat controlled study of the effect of longwall subsidence on a steeply dipping surface feature (an un-vegetated, evenly excavated open-cut highwall). The relatively recently developed radar and laser scanning technology has also enabled near continuous, real-time, sub-millimetre monitoring of a full 500m wide x 100m high highwall. Because the punch longwall enables access and a clear view, the technology could be easily deployed as compared to the highly vegetated and variable topography of stream valleys."

China?s remarkable levels of economic growth during the past three decades have lifted almost 300 million people out of poverty. This amazing achievement has placed an increasing demand on energy and minerals, especially coal, which supplies 68.7 percent of China?s energy (June 2011). It is estimated that China mined more than 3 Gt (3.3 billion st) of coal in 2010, three times as much when compared to merely 10 years earlier. Such an impressive achievement does not come without major costs ?? including concerns with mine safety and an increasing number of occupational illnesses due to fast growth. This article reports on one of the major safety concerns in China?s coal mining, dust and dust control practices, and known cases of caol worker?s pneumoconiosis affiliated with prolonged exposure to excessive coal dusts. The exact size of China?s mining industry is not known, but it is estimated the coal industry is at least five-million people strong, and the metal and nonmetals industry probably employs another three million people. To meet increasing energy demand, China mined more than 3.1 Gt (3.4 billion st) of coal in 2010 from its 15,000 plus coal operations1, most of which are small- to medium-sized operations with annual coal productions ranging from a few thousand tons to 300 kt (330,000 st). These small coal operations are typically in remote areas, inadequately engineered, poorly ventilated and still using rudimentary drilling and blasting mining methods employing antiquated mining equipment and, presenting safety concerns, i.e., methane and dust explosions.

"One of the most significant technical and practical challenges facing the tunnel construction team on the Legacy Way road tunnel project in Brisbane, Australia was how to erect the pre-stressed precast concrete slabs to form the smoke duct in the tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels. An essential part of the tunnel ventilation system, the smoke duct, extends the full length of the 4.6km long twin, two lane tunnels. The vast majority of the tunnels (approx. 4.3km) were constructed using two 12.4m diameter double shield TBMs. The refurbished Herrenknecht machines broke several world records on the way to completing the tunnel excavation works in just over nine months. With the excavation complete the focus turned to solving the complex civil tunnel fit out challenges. A key component of the civil fit out of the tunnels was constructing the smoke duct in the TBM tunnels which was designed as a precast solution. The slabs which each measure 8.62m long by 2.0m wide by 200mm thick and weigh close to 9 tonne need to be erected above cast in situ corbels whilst other tunnel finishing works continue. The space proofing clearance offered by the design to the support corbels below and the precast segmental lining above was in the order of only 100mm. This paper details the events of how the Transcity JV tunnel fit out team, comprising some of Europe and Australia’s leading tunnel construction specialists, drew upon the global strengths of the existing JV member companies and the global reach of leading TBM manufacturer Herrenknecht to develop an innovative system to solve this challenging problem. This globetrotting story, which starts in Australia, visits Europe and mainland China before returning to Brisbane where it all began."

"The Eh-pH diagram of lithium-titanium-water system at 25°C, 100 °C and 200 °C was constructed. It shows that there exist thermodynamic stability areas of Li2TiO3. This indicates a thermodynamic possibility for the formation of Li2TiO3 in aqueous solution. A hydrothermal process has been applied for the preparation of Li2TiO3 using TiCl4 and LiOH•H2O as raw materials. The prepared samples were examined with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The results show that temperature and washing condition have significant effects on the phase composition of the product. Phase-pure Li2TiO3 powders were obtained at 200°C with Li:Ti molar ratio of 2.0.INTRODUCTIONLithium-containing ceramics enriched in 6Li, such as Li2O, LiAlO2, Li4SiO4, Li2ZrO3 and Li2TiO3, are considered as tritium breeding materials (Saito et al., 1998; Roux et al., 1998; Johnson et al., 1998; Hoshino et al., 2002). In view of its admirable properties: low-activation, good thermal stability and thermal conductivity, excellent tritium release performance and reasonable lithium atom density (Kopasz et al., 1994; Roux et al., 1996; Saito et al., 1998; Wu et al., 2008), Li2TiO3 is recognized as one of the most promising candidates of tritium breeding materials. Meanwhile, Li2TiO3, as the precursor of H2TiO3-type lithium absorbent, receives more attention as the development of extracting lithium from salt lakes (Zhong, 2004; Zhang, 2010).Several synthetic techniques have been applied to prepare Li2TiO3 powders, such as solid-state methods (Lulewicz and Roux, 2002; Ramaraghavulu et al., 2011; Mandal et al., 2012), sol-gel processes (Deptula et al., 2002; Lee, 2008) and solution combustion routes (Cruz et al., 2006; Jung et al., 2006; Sinha et al., 2010). A solid-state method may produce a series of problems, including impurity contamination and difficulty in morphology control of the obtained powders, although the process involved is simple. The solgel process is prolonged and usually demands for multi-step reactions, while solution combustion route requires plenty of energy and easily causes product contamination by the fuel used. Owing to its environmentally benign and highly suitable characteristics in fabricating materials, hydrothermal technology has been widely used and became a powerful tool in the field of material synthesis (Yoshimura and Byrappa, 2008). For example, ZnO in the form of bulk single crystals, fine particles and thin films, which is an attractive photoelectric material, was successfully synthesized by hydrothermal process (Sekiguchi et al., 2000; Ohshima et al., 2004). A hydrothermal technique was also used to the preparation of carbon nanotube, which possesses outstanding mechanical, structural and electric properties (Bernholc et al., 1997), and is superior to the commonly used method (Gogotsi and Libera, 2000). There, it provides an option for preparing Li2TiO3. Laumann et al. (Laumann et al., 2010) synthesized cubic a-Li2TiO3 by hydrothermal reaction at 180 °C for 18 h, using TiO2 powder, comprising of anatase and rutile, and lithium hydroxide in de-ionized water. However, the prepared a-Li2TiO3 is extremely unstable with a maximum lithium loss of 75% when treated in bathing experiment."

Water and wind erosion of toxic zinc and lead smelter waste is one of the most urgent environmental problems to be solved in the Silesia region of Poland. Over 87 x 106 Mg of various mining wastes were disposed of in uncontrolled piles leading to soil, water, and air pollution in highly populated areas. Welz and Doerschel process Pb/Zn smelter wastes were stabilized in the summer of 1994 by application of heavy loads of CaCO3 (30 Mg/ha), CaO (1.5 -15 Mg/ha), and municipal biosolids (150 -300 Mg/ha), followed by seeding with a mixture of acid-and salt-tolerant grass species selected in a pot experiment. Vegetation was successfully established on 85% of the Welz material demonstration plot area (0.5 ha), even though it was initially high in water-soluble Zn, Pb, and Cd ranging from 0.4 to 1311,0.1 to 5.8, and 0.05 to 55 mg/kg, respectively. Standing biomass averaged 3.3 Mg/ha on the stabilized Welz waste zone by the end of the third growing season (1997). The revegetation of much of the Doerschel material area failed initially because of extremely high salinity (16 dS m-1), high content of water soluble metals (Cd in particular), and heavy compaction. The area was capped (15 cm) with waste lime and retreated with bio-solids (300 Mg/ha) in 1995, and standing biomass averaged 2.9 Mg/ha in the fall of 1997. The observed plant response to bio-solids and lime indicates this approach to be an environmentally beneficial technology as compared to the traditional methods utilizing topsoil covers.

The Kinross DeLamar Mine has been operated for more than 17 years producing precious metals dore' from ores, principally silver bearing with associated gold co-products. In late 1995 a new orebody was commissioned, the Stone Cabin orebody, and the site began a phased shift from silver dominance to gold dominance in terms of precious metals revenue. The Knelson Concentrator was selected to remove gold from a portion of the cyclone underflow stream in the grinding circuit. This paper describes the development of the flow sheet, specific mineralogical impacts on Knelson product and downstream materials, and impacts on mine/mill grade reconciliation.

The major health hazard from exposure to crystalline silica historically has been silicosis. Silicosis is the scarring of the lung from excessive exposure to crystalline silica. It has been recognized as an occupational disease for over two thousand years, since early Greek physicians noted the respiratory problems of miners, stonecutters, and quarrymen who were exposed to excessive quantities of mineral dust. During the industrial revolution, the incidence of the disease was greatly increased by the use of machinery which increased dust levels. Subsequently, the need for dust control was recognized and dust control measures were instituted. Silicosis is characterized by progressive breathlessness on exertion and develops over the course of years. X-ray images of the lungs show progressive scarring of the lungs. The symptoms are related to the amount of exposure to crystalline silica and the years of exposure.

"Nickel-metal hydride batteries (Ni-MH) are storers of electrochemical energy, which have a higher specific storage capacity than lead or nickel-cadmium batteries. The demand for Nickel-metal hydride batteries is increasing rapidly since their market launch in the early 1990’s. Today there is no suitable and sustainable recycling process to recover nickel, cobalt and rare-earth metals. The discarded batteries are used today in the steel industry as alloy material because they contain nickel. Cobalt and rare-earth metals (RE) are lost; they are non-recycleable.In a German governmental funded research project, IME Aachen, ACCUREC Mühlheim and UVR-FIA Freiberg are cooperating in processing as well as in creating a feasibility study. The target of this project is the development of a new recycling process for metal recovery from Ni-MH-batteries. The proposed process described in this paper consists of a combination of mechanical, pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing steps. This process is capable of treating all types of Ni-MH-batteries. After comminution steel and organics are separated. The separated Ni-MH is smelted in an electric arc furnace. The products are a nickel-cobalt alloy and a slag phase enriched with rare-earth oxides for further treatment to ‘mischmetal’. Both the Nickel-Cobalt alloy and the ‘mischmetal’ will be directly used in battery production."
