"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) emitted from diesel engines is currently considered to be a health problem in underground mines. As a result, attempts have been made to control DPM both by reducing emission rates and by managing the DPM that gets into the mine atmosphere. This paper presents a method for modeling the generation, transfer, and distribution of DPM in coal mining sections through the use of a convection-based computer model so that controls for emitted DPM can be evaluated. A variety of ventilation strategies and diesel deployment schemes for room-and-pillar development sections were simulated to compare their effects on average DPM concentrations at several fixed and mobile personnel locations in the section. Input data for the model was gathered from actual diesel development sections and derived from experimental study results provided by other researchers. Analyzed using the model were ventilation schemes using vent tubing and brattice, exhaust location strategies on the vehicles, and the direction of ventilation at the feeder-breaker location. A summary of results from this study is presented.With diesel equipment holding an important place in underground coal mining and growing in use over time, it is important to develop and improve controls of the exhaust emissions, especially diesel particulate matter (DPM), to further reduce potential health hazards. The proper design and maintenance of diesel engines and on¬board control procedures are paramount requirements for controlling DPM successfully. There is also, however, a significant reduction potential in terms of personal exposure that can be realized by managing the DPM that gets into the airstream. Strategic design of the mining, ventilation, and equipment implementation systems remain essential for efficiently reducing the DPM concentrations.Modeling the effect of diesel exhaust contaminants upon the mine atmospheric quality will permit improved health and safety design of the overall mining and ventilation systems. Numerous studies have been performed to model the distribution/transport of gaseous and particulate emissions in the underground mine atmosphere and some very sophisticated convection/diffusion models have been developed (Skobunov, 1974; Thakur, 1974; Stefanko and Ramani, 1975; Wala, 1980; Bandopadhyay and Ramani, 1983). Most of these models were developed for a single airway or based on the assumption that the ventilation network of a mining section can be approximately represented by a single intake and a single return. The complexity of most models of the convection/diffusion type and the mobility aspect of diesel haulage units made a detailed emissions model very difficult to develop.The current model is an attempt to fill the need for a more generic tool applicable to mining sections employing multiple mobile diesel units by simplifying the convection-diffusion model to a convection-only model. The simplification is based on the fact that the diffusion coefficient will affect only the transient environmental contaminant concentrations with little or no affect on the time-weighted-average concentrations over a relatively long period such as a working shift (Lee et al., 1994). In view of the difficulties involved in mathematical modeling, the approach here is developing and using a computer simulation model. A PC-based FORTRAN 77 simulation model for the analysis of mining systems with multiple diesel sources and any ventilation network configuration was developed to study the distribution/transport of DPM in mine airways, evaluate methods of reducing DPM concentrations, and explore modifications to existing mining practice."

Mineral processing plant operators are faced with the necessity to choose between many different possibilities for plant improvement. Only a few such possibilities, however, can be tested on the industrial site. Steady-state simulators make it possible to assess the effects of several different flowsheet modifications in a few days, thus helping the process engineer to make his choice implement the solution that seems the most appropriate and check it. The example described here is the crushing and grinding circuit of the Shila Gold Mine, jointly owned by CEDIMIN SA and BUENAVENTURA SA, in Peru. Several possible modifications for the purpose of increasing capacity have been simulated and the results assessed in terms of technical quality, investment costs and energy consumption. The best solution indicated by the USIM PAC simulator was implemented and gave a 20% increase in capacity with a pay-back time of two months.

"Inhalation of certain forms of silica, asbestos and some other respirable dusts can result in pulmonary fibrosis, characterized by destruction of the surfaces of alveoli and respiratory bronchioles. Fibrous thickening of the alveolar septa decreases the lung's capacity for gas exchange.Pulmonary macrophage damage by respired dust may initiate the fibrotic response.In one proposed mechanism, dust particles interact with the plasma membrane of a macrophage. This damages the cell or induces some hyperactivity of the cell, resulting in excessive release of lysosomal enzymes and reactive forms of oxygen (1). These reactive enzymes or radicals then damage the alveolar surface epithelial cells. A second mechanism has also been pro¬posed (2,3) in which dust damage to the macrophage causes the release of mediator substances which induce pulmonary fibroblast cell proliferation and increased collagen synthesis. This produces fibrous tissue in the terminal air spaces (4,5).Mineral surface interactions with plasma membrane lipoproteins have been proposed as a mechanism of lytic damage of pulmonary cells by silica dust in numerous models (6,7). The significance of dust surface proper¬ties has been further revealed in studies showing significant changes in dust induced cytotoxicity as a function of dust surface crystallinity and organic or inorganic contamination or coating of mineral surfaces (8,9). Such modification of the mineral surface might interfere with surface sites responsible for the toxicity of dusts for pulmonary macrophages, thus interrupting the early stages of the process of fibrosis.In vitro cellular assay systems using erythrocyte hemolysis or the release of macrophage cytosolic or lysosomal enzymes following dust challenge, have been used to analyze the initial mechanism of dust damage to cells. However the ability of these assays to predict the pulmonary disease producing potential of various dusts is imperfect owing to some ""false positive"" results. These assays as performed are therefore questionable models for the initial lesion in pneumoconiosis or silicosis. In particular, kaolin frequently is found to have comparable biological activity to silica quartz in these assays (10,11).Silica and kaolin have distinctly different fibrogenic potentials. Silica is highly fibrogenic, resulting in both acute and chronic silicosis (12). Some epidemiological data and animal experimentation data have indicated that long term exposure to kaolin can result in pneumoconiosis; however, kaolin is relatively benign as compared to silica (13-18). Kaolin is also of interest because it is one of the major mineral inclusions in Eastern U.S. bituminous coals. We have observed that exposing respirable sized native silica or kaolin for two hours to pulmonary macrophages results in a greater enzyme release for kaolin exposures, on a dust mass basis. Exposure of erythrocytes to the dusts also results in greater levels of hemolysis by kaolin for equal mass respirable dust doses. Therefore, these results do not correlate positively with known disease inducing potentials of the two dusts.Characterization of physical and chemical surface properties of dusts involved in occupational exposures, and characterization of the alteration of those surface properties which are likely to occur upon deposition of the dust in the lung, should improve the identification of respiratory disease hazards.Inhaled dust particles deposited in the lower respiratory tract will come in contact with pulmonary surfactant. This surfactant forms a surface film on and emulsion in the liquid hypophase coating of the alveoli and respiratory bronchioles. The primary constituent of this pulmonary surfactant is the lipid diacyl glycerophosphorylcholine, lecithin (19). In-pit tailings storage can provide many advantages when compared to typical above-ground tailings storage facilities (TSFs). As regulations become more restrictive and existing mines expand into new pits, the motivation and opportunities for in-pit tailings disposal is increasing.The Langer Heinrich uranium orebody follows a palaeo-river channel and is mined as an open pit operation. The mine pits intersect two main aquifer systems, one at the surface and one at the base of the orebody/pits. The tailings storage methodology is full in-pit disposal in multiple TSFs for the life-of-mine. Continuity of the initial hydrogeological conditions is incorporated in the design by the use of the pervious surround concept and the reinstatement of the lower aquifer (palaeochannel aquifer) at the base of the pit. Containment embankments are required to facilitate the staging of the TSFs development and are constructed using waste rock liberated during the mining of the pits. Classical apparatus for granulometric separation generally have limited applications which are found either in the level of the size of separation or in that of the accuracy and the efficiency of the separation or in that of the rate of feed. In industrial practice, the classification of the products of coarse dimensions generally poses no problems. On the contrary, the separation of fine particles presents some difficulties, however the apparatus is used (mechanical classifiers, curved screens and sieves, hydrocyclones, etc...). These difficulties are due to hprfections of separation, rather high cost prices, and sometimes large amounts of recycled materials.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines research was to determine the technical feasibility of direct sulfuric acid digestion of Florida land-pebble phosphate matrix. Preliminary tests in a continuous digestion circuit showed that 92 to 96 percent of the P2O5 contained in the matrix was extracted, while the P.05 concentration in the product acid ranged from 21 to 30 percent. The waste filter cake contained about 1 percent P205 and up to 18 percent water. These sandy compact filter cakes, comprised mostly of quartz and gypsum, appeared to be suitable for backfilling and reclamation of mined lands.

The recycling of end-of-life concrete into new concrete is one of the most interesting options for reducing worldwide natural resources use and emissions associated with the building materials sector. The possibility to realize a larger re-use of silica aggregates from old concrete, strongly contributes to reduce environmental impact (reduced exploitation of natural resources, reduction of CO2 emissions, airborne dust production, etc.).To reach this goal, innovative processing techniques, as well as innovative sensing units and architectures have to be developed. In this perspective an analytical approach, based on hyperspectral sensing techniques, is proposed, discussed and critically evaluated in order to perform an automatic quality control assessment, finalized to maintain a high standard of concrete demolition waste, from the earliest stage of recycling to the further processing stages, according to the detected in-situ demolition waste characteristics. The paper deals with the analysis and the evaluation of the problems related to the integration of this approach with state-of-the-art demolition and building processes and procedures. "I WOULD LIKE TO SAY how honoured I am that I have been invited to participate in this panel discussion. I have taken the liberty of narrowing my topic somewhat so that instead of speaking on the Sociology of Professions as a whole I will speak on one aspect of it, that is, on Manpower Problems in the Minerals industry of Canada, with some reference to a new social role for the professionals engaged in this industry. This probably means that I will be encroaching on areas covered or to be covered by other speakers, but I hope that when I do so I will do so from a slightly different vantage point. That is, from a sociological perspective rather than from a historical, industrial, business or professional perspective. I plan to divide my discussion into three areas, namely: (i) problems of ownership and control; (ii) environmental problems; and (iii) manpower and recruitment problems. I do not plan nor am I able to provide clear-cut solutions to the various problems I raise under these three headings. Rather, I hope that my discussion of the problems may form the basis for an extended discussion here and elsewhere. Because of the limitations of time, I will only briefly discuss the first two problem areas noted above – (i) ownership and control and (ii) environmental problems - and I plan to concentrate on the manpower issue."

Based on the characteristics of overburden rock strata movement, surface ground subsidence and casing deformation and failure, a tension-shear combination failure model of surface borehole was set up. The main controlling factors of the mining-induced deformation and failure of surface borehole were researched with this failure model and the limit analysis method. The mining methods and geology conditions mechanics action mechanism to surface borehole and its time ?space evaluation rule was found. The surface borehole deformation and fracture rule were advanced. It provides theoretical support to optimizing layout, structure type, security measure and local casing protection of surface borehole.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed a new technique for bonding strain gauges to rock bolts. These instrumented bolts are used to determine load at intervals along the length of the bolt so that reliable, consistent measurements for the design of support systems can be obtained. In this Information Circular, this technique is described in detail and should result in improved miner safety in underground mines.

This report describes development and application by the Bureau of Mines of techniques and instruments for using radioactive inert-gas tracers to determine flow paths through petroleum reservoirs that have natural fracture systems and for which water injection has been selected as the stimulative production method. A field test was made to prove the techniques and evaluate instrumentation. The feasibility of applying the techniques and instruments to the solution of reservoir problems in other stimulative methods of production also is discussed. Oil commonly is displaced from sandstone host rocks by the action of a driving force that causes the oil to move through interstices of the rock and into production wells. In addition to the requirements of oil being trapped within the sand pores and the presence of an effective displacement mechanism, the rock itself must have adequate permeability to permit flow of oil and other fluids.

A representative sample of ramming paste from a peripheral seam in an aluminium electrolysis cell was taken in order to develop a process to fabricate ramming paste samples in the laboratory. To this end, paste material was compacted in multilayers in a mould designed to be representative of peripheral seams in Alcoa's smelters. The density distribution in the representative sample was measured ranging from 1.51-1.76 g/cm3. The density range obtained by the proposed methodology in laboratory is 1.47-1.77 g/cm3. The results demonstrate that the proposed fabrication method adequately duplicates paste density from the cell for both one and two layer compaction. Finally, preliminary results related to the compressive strength and Young's modulus of laboratory samples were obtained at various temperatures and are presented in this paper.

The 11th International Symposium on Rock Fragmentation by Blasting (FRAGBLAST 11) was held in Sydney, Australia, between 24-26 August, 2015. The 93 papers, including six keynote presentations, covered exciting and practical topics in 20 sessions within 12 themes. Just fewer than 300 delegates from 27 countries attended. Four workshops were conducted on the weekend prior to the symposium, with three field visits after the symposium to Sydney region quarries, the Hunter Valley coal mining region, and the Kalgoorlie gold mining region. Delegates had the opportunity to visit the exhibition areas that showcased the latest products, software, hardware and systems in blasting technology. The keynote addresses were held in plenary sessions and set the tone for the parallel sessions that followed. They spanned the dynamics of the mining industry, the detonics of explosives, the interaction of stress waves and fracture mechanics in fragmentation, wall control blasting, and the importance of education and engineering for full process optimisation.

In the design and specification of a ventilation system for an underground mine, it is necessary to make reasonably accurate estimates of the pressure losses in the various airways of the mine. These estimates can be made with little difficulty for open airways with simple geometric cross-sections, such as those cut by continuous miners or tunnel-boring machines. The situation is much different on a longwall face, where the airway's complex geometric cross-section and the presence in the airway of obstructing equipment having a variety of shapes make it difficult, if not impossible, to estimate pressure loss using traditional methods of calculation. Saturated and unsaturated fatty acids are used in the flotation of iron values present in iron ore. Among the several fatty acids, oleic acid and its sodium salt are widely used. To substantiate the flotation results, the quantum chemical calculations of a few such acids have been carried out by adopting the semi-empirical AM1 method. These acids have been further optimized in the presence of an iron atom. The electronic interaction of the polar carboxylic head group of oleic acid with the iron atom is higher compared to the other acids. The operation of Quarry and Aggregate sites are similar to factory production, since it contains sequential production processes, tasks and activities to produce the output product. Compared to the plant though, the quarry processes are generally not synchronized and controlled towards the overall throughput of the site in real time. Some quarries control parts of the production but do generally not utilize real-time technologies for the whole site and all its activities. This fact indicates a general improvement potential in increased productivity at quarry sites, but also unsolved challenges for the same reason. The main contribution of this paper is the presentation of a Lean based method for how to describe the processes to identify control improvement potential within a site. The aim of the identified improvements is to increase overall site productivity by optimizing site, fleet and machine utilization towards the overall throughput, and minimizing operational expenses and inventories. Further the paper exemplifies the method?s usability with field studies at operational quarry plants successfully identifying and quantifying potential wastes and improvements. In addition the identified productivity improvements based on increased control and automation indicate challenges and needs in wireless communication and sensing technologies.

Mount Isa Mines (MIM) Copper Concentrator currently utilises Agitair 120 banks for its roughing flotation circuit. Apart from a rotor change, the only other significant work completed to the Agitair banks since their installation and commissioning over 40 years ago has been a like for like refurbishment in 2016. The Agitair banks at the MIM Copper Concentrator currently utilise the Pipsa rotor design which progressively replaced the original Chile X rotor design in the 1980’s and 90’s in the copper concentrator. Since the development of the Pipsa rotors, modern rotors such as the Dorr-Oliver (DO) high shear rotors have been released to the market with proven recovery and concentrate grade improvements over previous rotor designs. This paper aims to detail the installation, testing and comparison of Pipsa versus Dorr-Oliver rotors in two different flotation sections of the MIM Copper Concentrator.CITATION:Muller, M and Law, H, 2018. It is a distinguished honor for me to have this opportunity, and I am highly appreciative of this distinction. The beautiful surroundings of Gatlinburg and the pleasantness of a summer occasion are a wonderful tonic for all of us, yet they should not blind us to the seriousness of our Industry's problems No doubt, because of my past appearances before members of the Society of Mining Engineers, at which I discussed wholly scientific topics, or research in the Applied Sciences, you may be expecting me to revert to these subjects. But I intend to venture in a field that is new to me, yet old to all of us, the field of Economics.

Exploration for SX-EW copper deposits and plant operation depend largely on the copper and gangue mineralogy inasmuch as? they govern the feasibility of leaching. Mineralogical parameters are pivotal in identifying if an ore is suitable to dump, heap, thin layer, vat or agitated leaching and/or if the ore requires curing, bioleaching or alternate lixiviants. Problems in metallurgical testing, production leaching and recovery forecasting are very often related to lack of mineralogical data. This presentation will illustrate the use of quantitative mineralogical analysis for exploration, acquisition assessment and optimization of copper leach operations.
