Magnetic susceptibilities were determined by the Bureau of Mines fur 19 cobalt- and nickel-bearing minerals and for a suite for synthetic cobalt-nickel diarsenides analogous to the rammelsbergite and safflorite series. Relations between susceptibility and composition were found to be nonlinear for both impure natural minerals and pure synthetics.

Passage of the Public Utilities Regulatory Policy Act ("PURPA") in I 978 created an entirely new industry that is referred to today as the Independent Power Producers ("IPP"). Requirements of project owners, environmental compliance, project design, the financial community and most of all, the need to be a low-cost producer presented a unique situation for the sourcing and the utilization of fuels. Depending on the specific type of project being developed, (e.g. coal-fired, wood/biomass, natural gas, petroleum coke or a blend of several fuel types) and the type of boiler design, it is important to acquire fuels that will optimize both the project's operating efficiency and flexibility. This paper will focus on the acquisition of fuel for coal-fired projects, but will describe the necessary steps in the sourcing, contracting for, and the utilization of fuels and transportation resources in the IPP industry today.

A common method to prevent bubbles from coalescing in a flotation cell is by the addition of surfactants, called frothers. The gas dispersion properties in a column were tested for solutions of 1-pentanol, tri(propylene glycol) methyl ether, and poly(propylene glycol) in the presence of sodium chloride. The dependency of surfactant on the gas holdup can be divided into regions. It seemed that for a sufficiently low concentration of surfactant, even a stronger surfactant could show a transition in gas holdup from constant/decreasing to increasing with concentration. This region, however, was not marked by a decrease in the average bubble size. In addition, PPG gave higher gas holdup values while averaging larger bubbles. On the other hand, sodium chloride mostly affected the gas holdup when the concentration was high enough to prevent bubble coalescence. Another parameter affecting the gas holdup was the superficial gas velocity. A linear dependency was found between the two under a bubbly flow regime. The current study showed that both surfactants and salt could slightly affect the influence of the superficial gas velocity on the gas holdup.

St BarbaraÆs Marvel Loch operations have successfully used longhole open stoping as the primary mining method for a number of years. A transition to Core and Shell mining was implemented in 2009 to recover substantial ore grade resources remaining in sill and rib pillars. The transition to core and shell for the Exhibition lode required continuous waste filling of created voids and thus the removal of the crown pillar at the base of the Exhibition pit by blasting. Access to the top of pillar was denied as the pit was partially rock filled with waste rock from underground development.Beyond the technical challenges of the blasting project, a simple and transparent risk management process was developed to ensure appropriate controls and mitigating strategies were in place to minimise risk to personnel during the pillar removal process.Although failure of the crown pillar was anticipated but with the actual timing unknown, on 25 December 2011 the crown pillar yielded during normal mine operations. Engineered and isolation controls in place at the time were of a sufficiently high standard to ensure limited exposure of the underground workforce and minimal damage to mine infrastructure. Successful risk management through implementation of appropriate controls during the project lifecycle of two years and three months proved to be fundamental to the safe removal of the crown pillar.CITATION:Barrie, S C, 2012. The thematic mapper (TM) aboard Landsat II records image data at seven wavelength intervals or bands. Three record the visible region; three record reflected IR energy. A false color image combining bands 7, 4 and 2 rendered as red, green and blue respectively provides maximum discrimination of rock types in arid regions. Structural analyses and interpretation defines regional structures, large volcano-tectonic features intrusive complexes, all which localize mineralization. Special digital processing using the ratio: Band 3 / Band 1 can identify limonites and other iron minerals. The ratio: Band 5/ Band 7 identifies clays and alunite. These ratio images show features and patterns of hydrothermal mineral systems: ?patterns of sulfide and alteration zoning in large porphyry systems, and zones of strong silica, quartz-alunite-illite, and pyrite-sericite in epithermal centers. Thus, digitally processed Landsat TM images are a cost effective and rapid means to recognize altered areas and define targets for large mineralized systems.

"In the last decade Afitex developed the Draintube™ geocomposite, which provides simultaneous drainage and waterproofing functions. This new type of drain tubes planar geocomposites (DTPG) differs from other geocomposites as the drainage core is composed of multiple corrugated and perforated pipes instead of biaxial or triaxial nets. It is furthermore associated with needle-punch stitched layers of non-woven geotextiles, which act either as capillary mediums or as filters.In this paper, the structure of the Draintube™ drainage composite is presented along with its key properties and the drainage mechanism associated with its particular structure.The relevance of this kind of structure is then reviewed based on past and current laboratory bench evaluations and field installations for mining applications such as the covering of acid rock drainage (ARD) tailings for the Central Manitoba Mine (Canada) site-rehabilitation; and as a pregnant solution collection layer in heap leach pads.Some of the demonstrated critical advantages of Draintube™ in the mining industry are as follows: reduction of the thickness, hence lower volume of granular drain layers improvement of fluid and gas collection and reduction of the hydraulic load reduction of secondary collector network mechanical protection of the sealing membrane fast and economical installation of interlifts stability under extreme conditions (compression, temperature, pH) increased stability of entire covering system and reinforcement of protection of dykes filtration of the covered material customised drainage positive connection of the geocomposite to collector pipes enable leaks detection (using a conductive textile layer) with an electrical test.CITATION:Saunier, P, Ameglio, L and Durkheim, Y, 2015. "The technical knowledge and practical experience accumulated by industry and others in abating acid mine drainage (AMD) is being proactively applied at every phase of the mine life cycle. This paper traces the mine life cycle from exploration to post closure monitoring and maintenance, and reviews AMD abatement measures that have become an integral component of exploration and mining activities.Attention is increasingly being given to evaluating AMD potential as part of exploration work, and studies related to project feasibility and design. Mining, mineral processing, and waste management options are selected taking into consideration their suitability to inhibit AMD. These inhibition measures are typically committed to in closure plans submit-ted at the permitting stage. Mines are operated and decommissioned, often progressively, as planned and in accordance with environ-mental protection policies."

The solvent extraction section of an old Uranium Plant in the Vaal River region produced a sub-stance called Crud (Chalk River Unidentified Deposit) that formed within the aqueous/organic interface of the settler of the solvent extraction circuit. The crud was deposited together with gold tailings to the tailings dam many years ago. Previous research done on the crud confirmed that ex-posed crud leaches Mn and Ni at concentrations that are well above their acceptable risk limits as well as Zn that leaches at concentrations that are slightly lower than its acceptable risk limit. Soil washing and bioremediation technologies were employed to treat the contaminated soil. Various laboratory test work and the pilot scale studies were conducted in parallel with each other and the results of the laboratory studies were used to determine critical parameters. Four lixiviants, i.e. sulphuric acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid and ethylene diamine acetic acid were tested at three concentration levels i.e. 0.001M, 0.0001M and 0.00001M, respectively. Column tests showed that the leaching of the heavy metals increases as the soil porosity increases. Silica sand was added to increase porosity of the contaminated soil. Highest Mn removal was achieved mainly by sulphuric and oxalic acid at 0.001M at all soil levels. EDTA was significantly efficient in the removal of Ni and Zn. The recovery of heavy metals, particularly Mn, decreased as the depth of sampling in-creased. Heterogeneous bacteria and filamentous organism plate counts were conducted to evaluate the growth of the bacteria and filamentous organisms in the soil. Results showed that more organism growth took place in the bioremediated soil with a fertilizer added to it. The leaching of metals from the soil that was bioremediated in the pilot study was generally higher than the extraction of the metals from the soil that was leached with no bioremediation carried out. The results from this study suggest that the leaching of heavy metals from the contaminated soil is to a large extent dependant on the pH of the leaching solution. By increasing the soil?s porosity and bioremediating the soil, higher extractions of metals were achieved.

This report describes a chemical process for preparing solutions of trivalent rare-earth chlorides from sulfate solutions obtained by treating bastnasite concentrate. The chief impurity in the final solution is cerium, and this element is less than 1 percent of the rare-earth oxides. The solution is used directly in the separation of rare-earth elements by ion-exchange methods. The attractive features of the process are that the chemicals are inexpensive and the steps few. The process starts with precipitating the rare-earth hydroxides from sulfate solutions with caustic soda. After the hydroxides are dried to oxidize the cerium, they are treated with dilute hydrochloric acid to dissolve away the trivalent rare-earth elements, leaving the tetravalent cerium. Details for controlling the leaching step are described. The process shortens older procedures by omitting the usual oxalate or double-sulfate-precipitation step.

"Environmental regulatory requirements for discharge of solutions and closure of operations for the gold mineral processing industry have been gradually lowered and in certain instances have been targeted to USEP A inorganic drinking water standards for dissolved ions in solution. The use of jar tests for water treatment process development is suitable for preliminary scoping work to be conducted in the research laboratory, as well as for optimization studies at the site of the treatment requirement. This paper will describe experimental methods which were performed using standard jar test equipment in efforts to produce solutions which meet USEP A inorganic drinking water standards after chemical treatment of cyanide solutions. The materials tested included gold bearing pregnant solutions from heap leaching operations, gold plant barren solutions from the Merrill-Crowe zinc cementation gold recovery process and gold heap leach wash solutions after carbon-in-column gold recovery. Experiments included cyanide destruction with sodium hypochlorite and arsenic and selenium co-precipitation coupled with mercury precipitation.IntroductionCyanide leaching solutions are used to selectively dissolve metallic gold from commercially viable mineral deposits. The heap leaching process involves stacking of gold bearing ores on specially designed solution containment pads and percolating alkaline cyanide solutions through the ore to dissolve the gold. Pregnant solutions containing the dissolved gold are collected and sent through a gold recovery process. After selective recovery of the gold, the barren solutions are recycled to the gold extraction process after adjustment of the solution alkalinity and available cyanide concentrations."

"INTRODUCTION The float-and-sink test 5/6/ is generally the first test used in determining the washing characteristics of coal. The simplest form of the test is that of using one solution of such specific gravity that the test sample is separated into ""float"" and ""sink"" fractions. In practice, however, a series of solutions is used, and the sample is separated into a number of fractions of a definite specific-gravity range. Analyses of a series of fractions of this type are often referred to as the ""specific-gravity analysis,"" and are of great value in the selection, construction, and operation of commercial washing equipment.The test is rather simple to use, provided a number of conditions are recognized and as many as possible held constant, such as:1. In laboratory testing, two types of solution are available -Aqueous solutions of calcium and zinc chlorides.Mixtures of organic liquids such as carbon tetrachloride, benzene, gasoline, bromoform, etc.2. Absorption of the solution by the coal,3. Solvent action of the solution toward the coal.4. Constancy of specific gravity during the test is affected by temperature changes, dilution, and evaporation.5. Personal technique of the test, such as the time the coal is in the liquid, rate of adding the sample to the liquid, stirring, time of draining, etc.6. Moisture content of the coal as tested."

The possibility to develop an efficient recovery and reuse of concrete materials from Demolition Waste (DW) represents one of the main targets applied to end-of-life constructions dismantling/recycling. The need to recycle end-of life concrete materials is strongly increasing in these last years for several reasons: i) the decrease of steady supplies of good quality natural aggregates, ii) the need to secure ample supplies of concrete aggregates to the construction industry and, finally, iii) the environmental constraints limiting the DW wastes disposal. The fulfilment of these goals produces several benefits, that is: i) a reduction of new resources consumption, ii) a strong reduction of the costs linked to transport and energy production, iii) the possibility to utilize materials, otherwise lost (e.g. land filled), iv) land preservation and, finally, v) the reduction of the environmental impact of new exploitation activities. A lot of efforts have been addressed to develop, set-up and apply innovative technologies to maximize DW conversion into useful secondary raw materials. The possibility to utilize efficient, reliable and low cost analytical tools to perform detection/control actions: i) to assess concrete characteristics, before demolition, and ii) to detect the presence of contaminants in coarse aggregates (e.g. bricks, gypsum, steel, glass, plastics, wood, etc.) represent the key issues to fulfil in order to develop innovative process/control actions/procedures inside the DW sector. In this paper a new technology, based on HyperSpectral Imaging (HSI) sensors is investigated to develop suitable and low cost strategies finalised to define and implement innovative smart detection engines for sorting and/or DW flow stream quality control, addressed to perform recovered materials and/or products certification. The proposed sensing architecture is fast, accurate, affordable and it can strongly contribute to bring down the economic threshold above which recycling is cost efficient.

"Degradation of refractories in molten aluminum applications leads to energy inefficiencies, both in terms of increased energy consumption during use as well as due to frequent and premature production shutdowns. Therefore, the ability to enhance and extend the performance of refractory systems will improve the energy efficiency through out the service life. TCON_ ceramic composite materials are being produced via a collaboration between Fireline TCON, Inc. and Rex Materials Group. These materials were found to be extremely resistant to erosion and corrosion by molten aluminum alloys during an evaluation funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and it was concluded that they positively impact the performance of refractory systems. These findings were subsequently verified by field tests. Data will be presented on how TCON shapes are used to significantly improve the thermal management of molten aluminum contact applications and extend the performance of such refractory systems.IntroductionThe production of molten aluminum creates aggressive environments for processing equipment, thereby requiring refractory materials to contain the aluminum during melting, transfer, treatment, and casting operations. Degradation of these refractories not only causes issues with reduced product quality and production yields, but also increases heat losses as the insulative properties of the refractories are compromised. Furthermore, in addition to disrupting production output, refractory failures lead to further impacts upon energy efficiency as large amounts of energy are lost during the cooling and subsequent reheating of the equipment as the refractory linings are repaired or replaced.The need for improved refractory materials is recognized throughout the industry. A joint U.S. Department of Energy and industrial workshop held in 2000 on applications for advanced ceramics in aluminum production [1] noted that refractory materials used in melt processing equipment have many limitations. The workshop report noted that these issues may be addressed by using advanced ceramics, but new materials must be cost effective when compared to current refractory materials. Also, in 2005 the Canadian aluminum industry produced a technology roadmap [2] having the goal of identifying and bridging gaps between current technological resources in the industry and future requirements. One of the areas identified as being crucial to the future of the industry was the need for improved molten aluminum-resistant materials."

This paper describes a CFD modelling study which was carried out to investigate possible improvements in the design of an alumina precipitator tank at the Jajarm plant of Iran Alumina Company. In particular, the tank has an impeller located very close to the tank bottom, such that it quickly becomes covered with settled solids after a shut-down of the agitator, making it difficult to restart. A CFD model was firstly set up in which the existing design was evaluated in terms of flow pattern, off-bottom suspension and distribution of solids, and power consumption. Further simulations were then carried out to test alternative designs, leading to a recommended design, which maintains good mixing, with the same power consumption and without the use of a low-clearance impeller.

Mining operations have long been accused of causing a disruption to local, domestic and agricultural water supplies. More recently, concern for water supplies has increased with the advent of high-extraction mining techniques, namely longwall mining. Theoretically, any water bearing zone in the overburden above a high-extraction mining operation may be affected by mining. In some cases, a confining bed may be fractured causing a loss of water to a particular zone. In other cases, increased fracture permeability may enhance the ability of an aquifer to transmit and deliver water. Unfortunately, only a limited amount of studies have been conducted that characterize hydrologic changes and also quant1fythe magnitude of mining-induced subsidence. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted such a study at a mine site located in Greene County, PA. A total of 8 water wells were drilled and hydrologic parameters such as specific capacity, transmissivity and well yield were determined both before and after mining. Electronic water level recorders were installed on each water well to provide continuous observations of water level fluctuations.

An upsurge in demand for Australian coal has seen a much needed programme for a new generation of coal ports. This paper discusses design concepts in planning a large modern terminal, with the 25 Nt/a Port Kembla and the 50 Mt/a Newcastle facilities as practical examples. The need is emphasised for a studied Master Plan, in-built materials handling flexibility and staged development. Trends in bulk ship design and loading methods are noted. Features of these Australian designs include methods of dealing with poor ground conditions, functional civil engineering for environmental protection and optimal marine structure designs.

The combination of high-resolution X-ray microtomography (HRXMT) image analysis and Lattice-Boltzmann Method (LBM) simulations has demonstrated the ability to describe real multiphase flow problems in fine coal filtration. The single component multiphase flow He-Chen-Zhang LBM model was used to simulate filtration with actual HRXMT images of pore network structures produced in filtration experiments. The analysis performed on coal, silica, and glass bead filter cakes showed that particle shape and wettability are two of the most important factors in the retention of moisture during filtration.

Introduction The papers that follow deal with recently completed major improvements in practices at the Sullivan operations in Kimberley. The papers have been prepared by members of the Consolidated Engineering Staff and outline the construction programme which has been in progress for the past three years, entailing an expenditure of some millions of dollars. Four major operational changes have been brought about in the mine and concentrator. They are: (1) A change in backfill procedure for filling stopes below the 3900 level. (2) A 12,000-ton,per-day sink-float plant at the concentrator. (3) A new haulage system from the mine to the concentrator. (4) A completely new crushing plant and ore storage facilities located underground. A brief outline of the background and history leading up to this overall project will be given to show how each started as an independent betterment and how they were finally co-ordinated into one major programme. The first of these, namely, the necessity for backfilling stopes below the 3900 level, was the most pressing problem. All filling to date bad been done above the 3900 level, where mining was carried on in an irregular pattern of open stoping. Stopes below the 3900 level were first opened in 1940 and are being worked on a regular pattern of panel sub-level open diamond drill stopes. The two areas are separated by a sill pillar traversing the entire length of the vein at the 3900 level elevation.
