The sulfation rates of magnesium oxide and calcium oxide (molar ratio 7:3) contained in calcined CMA ( calcium magnesium acetate) by SO2 were measured. The experiments were carried out in the temperature range 700 to 1100 °C and under the SO2 concentrations of 0.3 to I mol % (5 % 02). In the low-temperature range below 830 °C the reaction produced CaSO4.3MgSO4 and unreacted MgO, but no MgSO4 phase. The formation of CaSO4.3MgSO4 phase has a significant implication in that it allows the utilization of MgO for SO2 removal whereas the sulfation of MgO from conventional sources is so slow that it is of no practical interest. Thus, the calcined CMA can remove SO2 at lower temperatures than conventional SO2 absorbents and at a greater capacity. Above 950 °C only CaO reacts with SO2, but at a much greater rate than the calcined Ca(OH)2, which is one of the most reactive SO2 absorbents.

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans released copper from -400-mesh chalcopyrite at a rate of 54 mg/I/hr. Any flotation chemicals remaining on the concentrate did not inhibit the leach rate. Zinc rougher tailings were also leachable. With bacteria, 75 per cent of the zinc and 68 per cent of the copper came into solution. In the sterile controls, only 16 per cent of the zinc and 10 per cent of the copper were released; 100 per cent of the copper and 36 per cent of the zinc were leached from pyrite cinders through the action of bacteria, and 17 per cent of the copper and 10 per cent of the zinc were solubilized in the sterile controls. Less than 0.027 per cent of ~he iron came into solution. The majority of the copper in a converter slag was acid-soluble, but a reverberatory slag responded to microbiological leaching. About 62 per cent of the copper came into solution, compared to 12 per cent in the sterile control. The various factors influencing the rate and extent of microbiological leaching are discussed.

"IntroductionSNOW LAKE is situated in northern Manitoba at latitude 54° 55 and longitude 100°, 400 miles northwesterly of Winnipeg, 80 miles northeast of The Pas, 80 miles east of Flin Flon. A 38-mile road from Wekusko, on the Hudson's Bay railway, serves the community.The mine is located in and close to the southern edge of the Precambrian Shield in typical low-relief muskeg and lake country.The Howe Sound Exploration Company, Limited optioned the property from Nor Acme Gold Mines, Limited, after preliminary diamond drilling had outlined two orebodies of low-grade arsenical gold ore.Following the examination and study of geological data and of 50,000 feet of diamond-drill core, and metallurgical tests made during 1942 to 1945, a decision was made to develop the mine and build a 2 ,000-ton mill concurrently. This development has been described by G. C. Lipsey in a paper entitled The Development of a Mining Operation from Diamond-Drill Data which was published in the August. 1952, issue of Mining Engineering.Geological Features of the OrebodiesThe orebodies at Snow Lake occur in volcanic rocks of acid to basic composition and, to a lesser extent, in intrusive hornblendite. The hornblendite is a massive, uniform, .coarse-textured rock except in the immediate vicinity of the ore zone, where it becomes sheared and carbonatized. The acid volcanics have been converted to quartz-garnet-biotite gneiss, and the basic volcanics to amphibolite gneiss. Orebodies have been formed by the replacement of all three rock types."

"A new marker chain front tracking method is used for modelling the meniscus movement during DC casting of aluminium ingots. Modifications have been made to an earlier method developed by Popinet and Zaleski [12] to adapt the model for simulations of meniscus dynamics in the casting process.Initial casting simulations show that wetting conditions in the mould greatly influence the meniscus stability. Controlling the wetting conditions seems to be important for improving the cast ingot surface quality.IntroductionIn conventional direct chill (DC) hot top casting of aluminium extrusion ingot with gas-slip poor surface quality of the cast ingot can be a problem. In the worst cases pronounced surface wrinkling occurs coupled with periodic zones of reduced grain size, macrosegregation and exudation at the surface. The observed surface irregularities are believed to be linked to Periodic surface oscillations or folding of the meniscus resulting in varying solidification conditions.The focus of this work is to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of the meniscus and the influence it has on the finished cast ingot surface through numerical simulations of meniscus movement during the casting process.A two phase marker chain front tracking technique[12] using cubic spline surface reconstruction is applied for modelling the meniscus movement. The advantage of this type of model is its accuracy in the calculation of surface tension forces. Also the wetting can be implemented directly as a boundary condition on the surface spline function. The method is applied in the FLUENT solver, which is based on a finite volume method using the SIMPLE algorithm."

Activated carbon is widely used in the removal of organic and/or inorganic contaminants from waste water due to its high surface area, porous structure, and specific surface reactivity. However, in practical applications, it is difficult to recover the activated carbon completely by screening or classification. In this project,we prepared a magnetic form of activated carbon (magnetic activated carbon or M-AC) by precipitation of iron oxides on the surface of activated carbon. The M-AC can be easily separated from effluents by applying an external magnetic field, thus it can be recycled and regenerated for reuse. M-AC was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), specific surface area measurement, and scanning electron microscope (SEM).XRD results show that the major phase of coated iron oxides on activated carbon is magnetite (Fe3O4). The specific surface area of activated carbon was found to be reduced after the impregnation of magnetite particles on the surface. The SEM micrograph shows the aggregation of the iron oxides on the surface of activated carbon. M-ACwas found effective in removing DETA (diethylenetriamine) species and metal ions from solutions. Cu (II) with initial concentrations from 5 ppm to25 ppm in solution is removed by more than 99% with the addition of 0.1 wt.%ofM-AC. For the removal of 25 ppm DETA species from solution, an addition of 0.5 wt.% of M-AC is required due to the larger size of the DETA molecule. Moreover, M-AC showed a good loadingproperty for nickel and gold ions from solutions. M-ACshows a better adsorption capacityover activated carbon and its potential applications in carbon-in-pulp for gold leaching and waste water treatment. "Tin sulfide ores and aged man-made products obtained after their processing are distinguished by a complex material composition and uneven impregnation of sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, galena, arsenopyrite, etc.) and tin ore (cassiterite). Enrichment of such ores is performed through sophisticated multistage schemes using not only gravitational methods, but also gravity flotation, flotation, magnetic separation techniques. Tin ores also contain rare and precious metals (indium, scandium, silver), characterized by fine dispersity and microscale to nanoscale fineness of mineral formations. During flotation concentration these metals are extracted along with the main ore minerals into concentrates (tin, copper, tungsten, etc.), however, up to 10-20 % of them are lost with final tailings. The aim of the work is an experimental study of the modification of the surface of sulfide minerals and cassiterite by stable metal-collector complexes to increase extraction of fine tin, silver, copper and other metals from complex tin ores. Triamide cyanuric acid (TCA) was studied as a thin silver flotation modifier. Thermophilic polymer with a functional group of phenylphosphine TMPPh was used as a selective flocculant. For experimental studies of the physical and chemical effects of collecting agents on the surface of minerals the following analytical techniques were used - the analytical scanning electron emission ASEM (LEO 1420VP INCA OXFORD ENERGY 350) and laser (KEYENCE VK-9700) microscopy, measurements of electrode potentials of mineral anthills by potentiometric titration, monomineral and pulp flotation. New data on formation of the adsorbed layer of DBDTC on the surface of chalcopyrite, galena and arsenopyrite were obtained, and the dimensions of the reagent films and the strength of their adsorption. The indiscriminateness of cassiterite to DBDTC ensures its selective separation into a chamber product during the flotation of sulfides. It is shown, that modification of the sulfide surface by stable complexes Me-DBDTC and Ag-TCA-TMPPh will increase the recovery of non-ferrous metals and silver into a collective sulfide concentrate and will provide a high-quality tin concentrate for flotation of tin sulfide ores.The studies were perfomed with the aid of the Russian Science Foundation (Project No. 17-17-01292).INTRODUCTIONTin sulfide ores and aged man-made products obtained after their processing are distinguished by a complex material composition and uneven impregnation of sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, galena, arsenopyrite, etc.) and tin ore (cassiterite). "Since the introduction of pulverized coal as a substitute fuel for natural gas in the various types of heating furnaces used, in steel mills, a number of fires and explosions have occurred, resulting in the loss of life and property.As one of the primary functions of the Bureau of Mines is to conduct investigations in the utilization of mineral substances with a view to increasing safety in the use thereof, it was deemed advisable to investigate the hazards involved in the industrial use of pulverized coal and, if possible, to devise methods of preventing future accidents arising therefrom. The knowledge of the explosive qualities of coal dust which the Bureau has gained in studies affecting dust explosions in coal mines was of material assistance in these investigations.Several plants were visited in which either fires or explosions had occurred, and data obtained as to the probable cause of the accidents.There was found to exist, among some of those employed about the furnaces, a lack of knowledge of the explosive and inflammable qualities of powdered coal.A small stream of pulverized coal leaking down from a defective joint in a coal transport line did not attract much attention, whereas, had a leak in a natural gas line occurred -wider similar circumstances, no doubt it would have had immediate attention.As a matter of fact, if by any means the duet cloud should come in contact with an open flame or hot metal, the effects would be as disastrous as if it had been gas.This is exceedingly well illustrated by an accident which came to the writer's attention. In the system used at this particular plant, the pulverized coal is transported to the furnace through compressed-air lines. The fuel is fed from a storage bin to a blowing tank in quantities as desired, after which compressed air is admitted and the powdered coal blown to the furnaces. At the time of the accident some repairs were being made to the tank, and it was supposed that the air pressure had been entirely released as the pressure gage stood at zero. There was, however, one or two pounds air pressure remaining and when one of the connections was taken off, a cloud of dust was blown across the room, 30 or 40 feet towards the drier furnace where it came in contact with some live coals. Immediately the entire room was filled with flame which rolled back and forth over a specs 50 feet or so in length."

For more cost effective strata control, a fundamental understanding of the behavior of the support system is needed. To assist in this understanding for shield supports, behavior of a four-leg shield design used on a soft floor in an operating longwall system is presented. The shield was constructed having a split base and a split caving shield. Attention is focused on other-than-normal loading on the canopy and its effect on deformation of the lemniscate links. Examples of the typical bending and twisting deformations are given. Schematics of the canopy, caving shield, and lemniscates showing important forces and moments are presented. Approximate minimum values of the forces and moments are calculated. The need for use of more inclusive three-dimensional design techniques is demonstrated.

On the occasion of the 14th Mill Operators’ Conference and marking 40 years since the first one was held in Mount Isa in 1978, it is fitting to review the history of the Conference and its development over that time.The first 10 Conferences were irregularly held at three to four year intervals, with 9 of these in regional centres of Australasia. It is only since 2012 that the Mill Operators’ Conference has become a regular biennial event, alternating with the MetPlant Conference.The number of people attending the Conference has more than doubled to 470 delegates at the 13th one in 2016. It has outgrown its regional beginnings.Papers presented to the previous Conferences have been analysed according to commodity, country of origin, technology and theme plus the affiliation of the authors to discern any trends that may assist in planning the future events.Suggestions are made as to how the AusIMM might wish to arrange its mineral processing/metallurgical conferences.Recent changes to the structure of the Conference providing a more meaningful experience for the delegates and increasing their interaction and involvement should be vigorously pursued.CITATION:Munro, P D, 2018. Refractory ores with gold entrapped in a sulfide matrix, must be processed in a first stage with chemical or physical treatment in order to liberate the gold for a subsequent step with cyanide. The goal of this research was to compare the refractory behavior of a gold concentrate treated using two pretreatment methods: pressure oxidation and fine grinding. Gold concentrate from Viacha Mining in Bolivia, assaying 50.11 gpt, with a P80 of 131 ?m was used. The concentrate contains arsenopyrite and pyrite as main sulphides in the matrix. A preliminary test with cyanide resulted only 13.5% of gold extraction with 4 hours of stirred leaching. Using an autoclave oxidation with sulphuric acid and 12 bar oxygen pressure at 220°C pretreatment, the cyanide gold extraction increased to 69.0% in 4 hours. When material was ground in a pulverizer, producing a P80 of 20 ?m and the product directly cyanided, stirred leaching gave a gold extraction of 65% in 4 hours. For both techniques, the effect of temperature, sulfur produced in autoclave oxidation, optimization of the cyanide and the nature of residues were also studied.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a glass containing approximately 17 percent lithia and 83 percent silica to establish a method of devitrifying cast and rolled shapes. Glass shapes with high strength were made by melting, forming, and rapid cooling of the composition, and the shapes subsequently were converted to a crystalline condition by heat treatment. The best devitrification schedule included rapid cooling of the glass to below 300° C, followed by reheating at a rate of 50° to 400° C per hour, depending on the size of the shape, followed by a of 60 to 70 hours at 500° C and another period of 15 hours at 800° C. attempts to use faster heating rates or slow cooling to accomplish devitrification in deformation of the shapes. The crystalline shapes had flexural strengths that averaged over 33,000 psi, achieved with an annealing time of 60 to 70 hours at 500° C.

The technology for copper utilization from circuit boards etching is proposed. The technology is based on combination of electrochemical and sorption methods. The conditions of copper electroextraction from ammonia-chloride solutions with obtaining of cathode copper are defined. The stage of electrolysis is destined for copper recuperation from etching process. Due to the electrochemical processes are unacceptable for cathode precipitation of the copper from diluted solutions such as rinse waters, the concentration on the strong-based cationites are used. After filtration throw the sorption columns solution is directed to the stage of circuit boards washing. It allows organizing close loop water recirculation. After saturation. resin is 'regenerated by chloride ammonium solutions. Obtained eluate directed to the etching stage, Generally. the technology provides copper recuperation and minimize wastes amount.

This paper is written to convey the latest developments in compact bucket wheel excavators (BWE's) operating in medium-hard rock and will serve to indicate that BWE and compact machines in particular do in fact have application in materials other than loose sandy soils and soft rock. A recently run extensive three month field test in hard marl, which was previously considered too hard and difficult to be handled by a BWE, is used as an example to explain some of the design requirements and problems associated with digging harder materials.

"This paper will describe a brief history of the method of characteristics as an accurate solution of the wave equation, and the author's experiences with the method of characteristics over a period of 30 years.As a result of the offshore pile driving activities associated with the development of the North Sea oil fields in the 1970's, two Dutch companies initiated extensive research efforts. Heerema started to research the dynamic behavior of soil during driving and HBG (Hollandsche Seton Groep) extended the method of characteristics with a straightforward theoretical solution for the shaft friction along a pile.The research institute TNO started the development of the wave equation program TNOWAVE in the late 1970's based on HBG's friction model extension for the method of characteristics. Today the program has a worldwide application in the field of pile testing. This paper will describe its development and application over time and its relation to today's applications for driveability studies for impact hammers (PDPWAVE) and vibratory hammers (VDPWAVE), signal matching for Dynamic Load Testing (DL TWAVE), Pile Integrity Testing signal matching (SITWAVE), and Statnamic simulation (STNWAVE).The paper will highlight that these developments have been the result of multi-disciplinary and multi-national efforts and encourage geotechnical engineers to seek further developments of the wave equation program in a similar manner. Finally, the paper will indicate some areas where such further developments are required."

Technology developed and first implemented in the United Kingdom enables very low grade aluminum scraps containing oils, organics, plastics and ferrous metals to be directly charged, without pretreatment, into a unique melting furnace. The system has been in full scale production for four years. The oxy-fuel-based furnace design incorporates internal afterburning in the furnace's hot zone, producing excellent thermal efficiency and very low emissions. The furnace is inherently low in NOx. This paper will provide both theoretical background and extensive operating results for this new melting concept. Applications describing both purpose built new furnaces and retrofits of existing reverberatory furnaces will be presented. Extensive operating emissions data will be presented.

Copper concentrate containing complex sulphides of Cu-Ni with 14.13% Cu and 10.04% Ni besides impurities such as 0.33% Co and 0.71% Mo, is not acceptable to the copper smelters due to the smelting problems. Selective bioleaching of nickel from the concentrate can be considered an an option to make it suitable for copper smelter. Effect of elemental sulphur and pyrite on the bioleaching of Ni and Co has been investigated using a mixed culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A.f.) and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans (A.t.). Parameters such as pH, temperature, particles, size etc. were optimised to understand the role of additives in the bioleaching. With 2% S at 308K, 2.0 pH, 5% pulp density and 200µm size particles while shaking at 100 rpm, 79% Ni, 41% Co and 5% Cu were bioleached as compared to the leaching of 81% Ni and 45% Co in presence of 10 wt% pyrite in 60 days; 27% Ni, 24% Co and 4% Cu were recovered in sterile experiment. The selective dissolution of nickel and cobalt as compared to copper may be explained by galvanic interaction between chalcopyrite: pentlandite / pyrrhotite. Bioleaching was facilitated by strong oxidizing conditions due to higher Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio/redox potential (ESCE) as a result of improved interaction of minerals through biooxidation of sulphur and accelerated galvanic interaction by pyrite. The mechanism of selective leaching of Ni and Co was established by XRD phase identification.

Rockbursts and rockfalls cause very large safety and productivity losses in underground mines. One of the major unsolved problems of safe, economical rock support in underground mining has been that of maintaining anchorage during dynamic rock loading conditions or seismic related occurrences. It is recognized that the large displacements and high strain rates in excavation walls and underground structures cannot be countered by increasing the strength of stiff rock-reinforcing systems but must be accommodated by introducing yieldability into the support elements. This paper introduces a low cost yieldable support system which provides viable solutions to dynamic support loading. Such system should not only provide a feasible and more effective rock mass stabilization strategy but improve mine safety and reduce losses.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (Goldstrike) operates a six circuit (train) pressure oxidation plant for the pretreatment of gold bearing sulfide ores. The property is located 27 miles north of Carlin, Nevada. Since the commissioning and start-up of the first circuit in 1990 until the present total plant availabilities have exceeded 90%. The discussion that follows will detail the maintenance practices employed to consistently achieve this goal.

"Electrical steels are used in motors, power generators, and transformers for electrical applications owing to their superior magnetic properties. These properties are attributed to the presence of a significant amount of silicon in the steel composition. Silicon steels are mainly grouped into two categories: grain-oriented (GO) and non-grain-oriented (NGO). The Si content of silicon steels is generally between about 0.50% and 6.5%. Therefore, silicon steels are further classified as low-, medium-, and high- Si steels. In this paper, liquid steel processing practices for certain silicon steel grades are outlined by considering a steelmaking company that integrates a basic oxygen furnace (BOF), a ladle furnace (LF), and an RHtype degassing unit (RH). Possible problems are identified, suggestions are discussed, and conclusions are drawn on the basis of real plant data. However, the differences in the properties and thermomechanical production of GO and NGO grades are outside the scope of this paper. In this study, liquid steel processing of certain silicon steels will be discussed. In the integrated iron and steelmaking process, converters are the primary steelmaking units that are used mainly for decarburization and removal of phosphorus, and for obtaining liquid steel with a specific chemical composition and suitable temperature for secondary steelmaking operations. Ladle furnaces are a type of ladle metallurgy station consisting of electrical and/or chemical heating facilities for adjusting the liquid steel temperature during alloying. Various types of vacuum units are used for decarburization and removal of nitrogen, hydrogen, and sulphur, depending on the metallurgical conditions of the vacuum units. In this study, an actual steel-production company is considered in which the primary steelmaking operation uses a basic oxygen furnace (BOF) converter with N2/Ar bottom blowing, and the secondary steelmaking operations involve (1) a ladle furnace (LF) heated by three graphite electrodes and equipped with Ar and N2 top/bottom mixing facilities, and (2) an RHtype (circulation) vacuum degassing unit equipped with a top-blowing attachment for oxygen blowing and an Ar-purging system from an up-leg snorkel."
