This paper deals with truck haulage methods and costs at one of the many open-cut mines that are replacing rail haulage with heavy-duty trucks. At this mine, ore is trucked to a crushing plant, centrally located within one of the open-cuts. The requirements for efficient low-cost truck haulage are: Good trucks designed for heavy loads, adequate truck maintenance, smooth roads, and well-trained truck drivers The weighted average cost of hauling a long ton of ore to the crusher and the waste to the dump was reduced from $0.1993 in 1948 to $0.1114 during the last half of 1949, his corresponds to a cost per ton mile of $0.0864.

This paper describes the recent developments, arising from research at Leeds, in the computer modelling of packing of complex shaped particles and prediction of physical properties of the structures represented by the packing. The computer model DigiPac, is capable of packing particles of any shapes and sizes in a container of arbitrary geometry. The ability to predict packing structure of real particle shapes and to compute directly some structure-dependent physical properties (such as liquid permeability, mechanical strength/ stability, compaction and sintering, dissolution and leaching, etc.) is obviously highly desirable and has significant potential in industrial applications. Examples are presented relating to the packing of granular materials.

"A framework for ventilation planning, with a focus on planning to the end-of-mine life, was developed for the Diavik Diamond Mine, Northwest Territories. This framework was successfully used by Diavik’s mine engineers to select a cost-effective ventilation plan that met the life-of-mine requirements. The framework achieved this result by reconciling the production plan with the ventilation plan. A set of design acceptability criteria was created and a PICK (possible, implement, challenge, kill) chart was used to quickly narrow down the generated ideas for detailed assessment and economic analysis. RÉSUMÉ Un cadre de planification de l’aérage, qui met notamment l’accent sur la planification jusqu’à la fin de vie de la mine, a été développé pour la mine de diamants Diavik. Les ingénieurs miniers de Diavik ont su mettre à profit ce cadre pour sélectionner un plan d’aérage rentable qui répondait aux exigences propres à la durée de vie de la mine. C’est en conciliant le plan de production et le plan d’aérage que cet objectif a pu être atteint. Un ensemble de critères d’acceptabilité de la conception a été créé et un tableau PICK (de l’anglais possible, implement, challenge, kill, une méthode donnant la priorité à certaines actions proposées ou à des idées visant à résoudre des problèmes) a été utilisé pour rapidement limiter les idées générées et les soumettre à une évaluation et une analyse économique détaillées.INTRODUCTION The Diavik Diamond Mine, Northwest Territories, has been an underground-only operation since 2012 and has a remaining mine life of 8 years. In the first year of underground-only operations, the production rate increased from 60 kt of ore per month to more than 160 kt of ore per month. In subsequent years, this rate was continuously increased (Table 1) because the operation went through various improvement initiatives. By the end of 2016, Diavik’s total production was 0.41 Mt (+22.8%) ahead of the 2012 budget for 2016 production."

In small steelmaking shops, in foundries and forging plants, there are not too many option to recycle the basic slags, which are not suitable for many purposes of recycling, because of their low chemical and structural stability. A solution of an adequate recycling is a direct recycling in EAF. Several quality requirements, physico-chemical properties and proportions of slags must be analysed. The progress in this fields permites to establish an adequate proportion of recycled slag, based on enough exact computation of the related property. For oxydizing slag, obtained during melting and in the first part of decarburization operation, the problem of phosphoms contents can be analysed using the phosphate capacity (C PO34-). For reducing periods, during deoxidization operation, desulphurization also occurs and the problem of the sulphur contents can be analysed using the sulphur and sulphide capacities ( Cs / Cs) Between this two complex thermodynamic indicators of the slags. a direct relation is established, using thermodynamic aspects, resulting from the equilibrium constants for dephosphorization and desulphurization process and also, using the optical basicity of slags, computable from the chemical analysis of the slags. On this basis starting from the steel quality requirements. adequate strategies can be established in order to obtain high rates of recycling (between 50-80%) of steelmaking slags. Estimation of gas holdup from electrical conductivity measurements has been used in lab and industrial installations. The approach is based on the application of Maxwell's model, which relates the concentration of a dispersed phase in a continuous medium to measurements of the electrical conductivity of the dispersed phase, continuous medium and the resulting mixture (dispersion). When applied to inferring the collection zone gas holdup in a three phase system and to facilitate real-time on-line measurement, the slurry is assumed to behave as the continuous medium and gas bubbles as a nonconducting dispersed phase. This article derives an equation for estimating gas holdup in a three phase system, eliminating the assumption that the slurry behaves as a continuous medium but rather as a dispersion of non-conducting solid particles in water. In this formulation only water behaves as the continuous medium in the sense of Maxwell, and gas holdup in a three phase system is then calculated from the application of the Maxwell model twice: (1) to determine solid content in a two-phase system, and (2) to determine solid plus gas holdup in a three phase system. To validate the new equation and quantify the errors incurred by assuming slurry is the continuous phase a laboratory flotation cell was instrumented to continuously measure the conductivity of two and three phase dispersions with known solids contents. As the amount of gas in a lab flotation machine is difficult to measure directly or by another indirect technique such as using pressure signals, 2.5 mm dielectric plastic spheres having a density of ca. 1.3 g/cm3 were used instead of air bubbles for validation. Experimental results demonstrated that the continuous medium assumption underestimates gas holdup and that the resulting bias error increases linearly with the solid content and decreases with the magnitude of gas holdup.

"A purification process was developed to removal impurity element boron from metallurgical grade silicon by electromagnetic induction slag melting. Vacuum melting furnace was used to purify boron in both Al2O3-MgO-CaO-SiO2 slag system and Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 slag system. The relationship between different slag chemistry and the removal of boron in silicon were studied using Back Propagation (BP) Neural Network model. The best slag chemistry for the removal of boron was predicted by Genetic Algorithm (GA) contributed by the use of Matlab. The results show that the mass fraction of Boron in silicon is reduced from 11.7496×10-6 to 2.3259×10-6 after slag melting in 28.96%Al2O3-3.43%MgO-36.24%CaO-31.37%SiO2 slag system. The relative error obtained with GA-BP Neural Network model was below 0.35%.IntroductionSolar energy, due to its low green house gas emissions, has been paid great attention. Accordingly, the demand for solar grade silicon (SoG-Si) has been growing rapidly. The quest for developing a low-cost method of producing SoG-Si has been moving forward in the last decade. Refining of metallurgical-grade silicon (MG-Si) attracts research interest due to its low material and energy costs, and more environmentally friendly technology in comparison to the traditional Simens process. As such, impurity elements in MG-Si must be removed to low levels for the photovoltaics (PV) cell to operate at optimum efficiency. Most impurities in metallurgical-grade silicon (MG-Si), especially metal elements, can be separated by directional solidification and the zone refining plasma-arc method [1, 2]. The main focus in refining MG-Si to SoG-Si is on the impurities which are the most difficult to remove. Boron has relatively high segregation coefficients (KB=0.8, concentration of Boron in solid silicon divided by its concentration in liquid silicon) [3] and higher vapor tension (the saturated vapor pressure of boron and silicon are 6.78×10-7 Pa and 0.4 Pa, respectively). The vacuum melting and directional solidification methods hence have no effects on boron removal.Slag refining involves melting MG-Si in the presence of a flux to produce a slag phase that can take up the impurity elements. The mechanism of slag refining is considered to include two main steps: the oxidation of boron and the absorption of boron oxide by slag materials. The oxidation of boron, described by the oxygen potential (PO2), resulting from the equilibrium Si and SiO2. The absorption of boron oxide, described as the slag basicity, is interpreted as expected to facilitate their extraction to alkali and alkali-earth oxides in the slag phase. Thus, effective removal may be obtained for a certain slag composition. Researchers [4-5] examined the effect of boron removal in CaO-SiO2 based ternary systems and showed that the addition of excess CaO can decrease the activity of SiO2. Researchers [6-8] studied the boron behaviors in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3, CaO-SiO2-Na2O, Al2O3-BaO-SiO2, CaO-SiO2-Li2O and Al2O3-CaO-MgO-SiO2 slag systems by adding boron in the silicon to a degree. Li2O, Na2O, MgO and BaO are thought to be associated with B2O3."

The need to apply the latest available technology to develop better tools and methods to meet problems in the mining industry was recognized by six of Canada's leading mining companies. As a result, MIROC (Mining Industry Research Organization of Canada) was chartered to identify problem areas in Canadian mining and to have research carried out to develop the tools and equipment to meet these perceived needs. The initial activity of MIROC has been in the environmental field, with improved clothing and protective devices being developed by contractors. Work clothing for miners is now being field tested. Respiratory protection and a new personal light source combined in a new "space-age" helmet are about to be issued for testing. Further developmental work is being carried on to offer these units and probably other personal protective devices on an individual basis as well as in a combined package.

"Tunnel inspections are increasingly needed to ensure that aging infrastructure does not fail in service. To this end the time between inspections is being reduced, the thoroughness of each inspection is being increased to provide for a more detailed assessment of conditions and inventory defects. The conventional Tunnel Report, containing hand-drawn maps and/or photos, and a log describing observed defects and areas of deterioration, is being increasingly replaced by LiDAR generated 3-D surface maps. The data collection process that traditionally supports development of a Tunnel Report is labor-intensive, taking crew-days of engineering effort, and requires partial or full stoppage of tunnel operations. In an urban setting, such multi-day interruptions in service are difficult to countenance for a near-capacity tunnel operation. Under time pressures, the detail and accuracy of the manual inspection process will inevitably be compromised, resulting in a high cost, low quality product. As the tunnel inspection window decreases the argument for incorporating laser scanning in to the inspection process is increased dramatically... The 3D scan technology allows detailed and accurate data to be collected within the tight time frames demanded by the owners and operators of critical infrastructure. Not only does the use of laser scanners improve the 3D accuracy of the data collected, it also, enhances the efficiency and safety of the inspection process, reduces data collection and processing costs and enhances the reliability of results over time. The paper will also demonstrate the value of adding photogrammetric data to the 3D Model to show surface defect discoloration. The accurate and detailed data collected by a combination of LiDAR and photogrammetric techniques provide superior data needed to inform critical asset management decisions related to maintenance, repair and replacement."

Information on the elements contained in E-Waste is important from the viewpoint of recycling. We analyzed several components of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) collected from citizens. The distributions of the minor metals in WEEE were determined with elemental mapping and chemical analyses. The annual change in elemental composition was investigated by analyzing equipment manufactured in different years. The information will be of use for separation techniques required for future advanced recycling.

In late 2008 Xstrata Newlands Coal Mine in Central Queensland and Orica Mining Services engaged in discussion to investigate methodologies to change their current mining practices and overcome the issues in the mining of steeply dipping coal seams, the associated coal loss risk and to assist in improving mining productivity. A strategy was developed and it was determined that through-seam blasting was essential to the success of winning the coal from the Wollombi Pit at Newlands.

Over the many years since the development of the steam powered shovel, various powering and control techniques have been employed for the various shovel functions. While volumes have been published on this subject, this paper will be limited to a very brief discus-sion of one of the latest of these and its application to a unique machine. The evaluation of the subject machine is far beyond the scope of this discussion, which will be limited to the techniques and equipment employed, and the considerations involved in their choice. The basic requirements for any power and associated control system for any power shovel function have remained relatively un-changed over the years. To the extent possible, such an equipment grouping must be: Easy to install during fabrication Easy to maintain and repair by available personnel Life cycle cost competitive Adequately reliable Adequately responsive And as may be expected these factors are arranged in various orders of priority by different manufacturers and users. All the various time honored approaches have to some extent fulfilled these require-ments but were discarded or fell into disuse when more effective approaches were developed. The latest in this long line of develop-ments and perhaps the most promising is that of electro-hydraulic controls and hydraulic drive.

"More than 6,300 people attended SME’s 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ and many of them made the trip to the conference to take part in the excellent technical sessions that are presented on a yearly basis by the Society.Holding true to form, this year’s conference was full of options. In fact, this year there were 121 technical sessions and 751 presentations to chose from. The following is a sample of some of the technical sessions as seen through the eyes of the editors of Mining Engineering and SME technical papers.SME Sections Sharing Success: Changing thePublic Perception of MiningThis session was a workshop on how several local sections were effective in getting the message out to their communities and schools about the value of the extractive minerals industry. Several sections shared their outreach successes, including the Mining in Society merit badge activities by the Minnesota Section by Julie Lucas and SME’s participation in the World Scout Jamboree in Japan by Frank McAllister.Dan Alexander highlighted activities by the Pittsburgh Section, such as preparing minerals kits and pamphlets for elementary school classes and regional science fairs. The West Virginia University Student Chapter used the kits as handouts at their local gem and mineral show. School speakers in full mining gear were especially interesting to the young children.Other speakers were Michael Linn, Paradise Valley Unified School District — Business and School Partnerships; and Greg Kruse, Central Wyoming Section of SME — What makes a successful section?Engineering Competency ModelAmerican Association of Engineering Societies and the U.S. Department of Labor, with a grant from the United Engineering Foundation, developed a guide to the set of skills necessary for success in the engineering community -- Knowledge – Skills – Abilities — needed for all disciplines.Various engineering societies are now writing the Tier 5 occupation-specific requirements. A simulation of a capper concentrate smelter was built with a capacity of 450,000 tons per year. The system's components to simulate were three : a Reverbetory furnace, a Wiente ' s modified converter ( TMC ) and two cranes. The system was classified as dynamic, stochastic and discrete. In the simulation language choice it was concluded that the most advantageous one was GPSS/H. The model verification was done through the interactive Debugger that the language has and the statistical validation was done through the result variables of sane activities, that as a whole characterize the system (charged matte and charged concentrate to the TMC, skimming white metal and skimning slag). The validation was done comparing the simulation results of these variables with the ones obtained for those variables in a specific month in the smelter. The comparison consisted in a difference of means test and in all cases the equality was accepted with a 95% of confidence. The animation tool was PROOF, a general purpose animator, that is used after processing the simulation.

This investigation is part an overall investigation on the effect of sodium silicate on the properties of the mine backfill. The results presented will highlight the effects of binder dosage, sodium silicate concentration, and pulp density on the performance of stabilized sodium silicate-fortified sand pastefill samples. Binders implemented for these experiments consisted of cement, slag, and sodium silicate in various proportions. The binder content varied from 3 to 9 wt% (total dry weight) and sodium silicate concentrations was adjusted at 2 and 4% (total binder weight). Moreover, pulp density was adjusted to values between 80 and 83 wt%. For completion of the aforementioned phase of the study, series of sand pastefill test samples were prepared and cured for 28, 56, or 120 days, in a humidity and temperature controlled room. The specimens were tested for uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). In order to study the effect of sodium silicate on microstructures of stabilized sand pastefill, some MIP tests were conducted on selected samples. The results of this investigation evaluate the use of sodium silicate as a partial replacement of cement in stabilized backfill. The analyses of the results demonstrates that, with an increase in binder content and a decrease in pulp density, the UCS values of sand pastefill samples increase. Further more, the results indicate that increase in addition of sodium silicate does not necessarily result in higher strength minefill.

Reflected light microscopy, and scanning electron microscope energy dispersive spectroscopic analysis and backscatter electron images were used to determine if a "slick dross" with undesirable handling properties has an assemblage of phases distinct from normal dross. This study has found that in the normal dross the most abundant lead phases are lead sulfide and lead metal and the most common copper phases are copper-iron sulfide and copper sulfide. In the slick dross, the most abundant copper phase is copper-lead sulfide and the most common lead phases are copper-lead sulfide and lead sulfide. The resulting mineralogical information has provided additional insight into the causes of the handling problem and the reaction mechanism for the formation of normal and slick dross

"With depletion of global ore deposits, there has been an increasing industry trend towards mining of lower average grade deposits in order to meet global demand, resulting in increased processing cost, energy usage and water usage. Consequently the industry is seeking pre-concentration technologies to reduce costs, increase production in existing operations and potentially enable the economic mining of previously uneconomical deposits. This pre-concentration can also advantage downstream processing and metal recovery. CSIRO has developed a large scale magnetic resonance based technology for the rapid quantitative detection of selected copper, iron and arsenic minerals in bulk ore. The technology is suited to measurement on large primary conveyors for enabling “pod” based sorting. The approach used in high tonnage sorting is to not sense and divert individual rocks, but to instead measure groups of rocks (“pods”) carried continuously on a single primary conveyor that can be diverted by conventional mechanical means. Bulk ore sorting operates by removing barren ore pods from a stream of crushed ore based on a bulk sensor measurement at a pod resolution of ~1 – 10 tonnes. The sorting process is based on the intrinsic variability of grade during the mining process that often occurs at the few tonne scale, and for instance, is common in many porphyry copper deposits. The MR technology has been proven in the laboratory for a wide range of copper, arsenic and iron minerals. A full scale prototype sensing system has been demonstrated in a trial at an Australian copper mine. Implementation trials of commercial MR based bulk sorting systems are progressing during 2018.INTRODUCTION An increasing trend in the mining industry is the exploitation of larger lower-grade deposits to meet global demand. Low-grade deposits involve increased processing cost, energy and water usage and increased tailings. There is therefore growing interest in technologies that enable more efficient extraction of low grade deposits. Water intensity of mining activities in a context of water scarcity, and the environmental and health implications of mine tailings are existing challenges, which are only made worse by the progression to lower grade orebodies. There is therefore also an interest in safer, cleaner and less wasteful extraction and production to ensure community well-being and environmental resilience."

This paper describes a collaboration between McGill University and Hatch Ltd. to expose undergraduate students to real-world industrial projects. As part of the final-year design course, the students receive a detailed lecture on Scale-Up of New Technologies', including seven case studies drawn from over fifty years of full-scale industrial projects. The students are taught the basic concepts of scale-up, including the limits of pure theory and the need for empiricism. Insights from real scale-up failures and successes are fictionalized as Projects A, B, C, etc. The students are then asked to identify the guiding principles that can be distilled from these case studies.

Bateman Engineering managed the establishment of a second diamond treatment plant at the Letseng Mine in the Mokhotlong District of northern Lesotho, about 100 km from the town of Buthe Buthe. Letseng Diamonds Proprietary Limited, is owned 70 % by Gem Diamonds and 30 % by the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho. The second plant, which commenced construction in late 2006, doubled Letseng Mines' hard rock processing capacity from 2.6 million t/yr to 5.2 million t/yr, making it the worlds' seventh largest diamond mine by throughput. Bateman Engineering provided the engineering design, procurement and construction management of the new plant.

Methane Rating has been developed from a need, in South Africa, for quick and simple measurement of coal face methane characteristics. It employs proven existing direct measurement methods, adapted specifically for rapidly advancing coal face conditions, to deal with the short term high release rates encountered during continuous miner coal cutting. The Rating is a comparative value, relative to the normal or average conditions encountered within a maintained data base. The seam gas content and the initial emission rate are plotted against each other on a graph, where they are compared with the average conditions to obtain the rating. The higher the seam gas content, and the higher the initial methane release rate, then the higher the Methane Rating, on a scale of 1 to 4. Methane being released from a newly mined coal sample is measured once underground, from a sealed gas-tight canister. The sample is returned, still sealed, to surface and milled to rapidly release the remaining methane. It is later intended that the milling process is also completed underground. Applications include the identification of changing methane conditions, outburst prone conditions, methane emission against advance, and mining in devolatilised coal.
