Fire refining of copper consists of two stages copper oxidation and copper reduction. Very frequently the capacity of the anode furnace is determined by the rate of copper reduction. The analysis of factors affecting the rate of the oxygen reduction from a liquid copper with solid carbon or injected hydrocarbons pointed out the role of the mass transfer in a liquid copper in final stage of the reduction. Experimental results of copper reduction with graphite and injected natural gas in laboratory- scale crucibles showed two stages of the reduction process with a sharp change of the controlling mechanism. The estimated dynamic surface area of gas bubbles based on the measured bubble frequency and the gas flowrate allowed for the detennination of the reaction constant as a degree of the partial pre-combustion of the air/natural gas mix. The variation of the used reductant as a function of the oxygen concentration and temperature has been evaluated based on the detennined kinetic model. The intensification of copper reduction in fire refining has been discusses on the basis of obtained kinetic data and analysis of various factors detennining the time of reduction.

"Preparation and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) transmission spectra of aluminum fluoroberyllate glasses, MgF2-CaF2-SrF2-A1Fr BeF2 (MCSA-Be) and MgF2-CaF2-SrF2-AlFrYFrBeF2 (MCSAY-Be), were studied. The influence of YF3 and BeF2 on the thermal stabilization against crystallization and VUV transmittance was investigated. With increasing the BeF2 content, the crystallization tendency decreased and the absorption edge shifted to shorter wavelength in the MCSA-Be and MCSAY-Be glasses. The MCSA-20Be glass composition exhibited the shortest wavelength UV absorption edge (-147 nm) and the highest transmittance at 157 nm (60% for 2 mm sample thickness). The transmission values at 157 nm and the slope (steepness) of the absorption edge were found to be significantly influenced by the trace amount of Fe2+ derived from the BeF2 raw materials.IntroductionPure beryllium fluoride is known to be an only fluoride that forms one component glass on cooling from the molten state and is structurally similar to silica with [SiO4]4- tetrahedra. Molten BeF2 is highly viscous with a viscosity of about 106 poise near its liquidus temperature at 550""C[l]. The addition of modifying fluorides such as LiF, NaF or KF to BeF2 substantially decreases the viscosity[2]. Glass forming region of binary fluoroberyllate glasses has been mainly reported by several authors [3]. LiFBeF2 binary system is structually analogy for Mg0-Si02 system from their phase diagram and ratio of ionic radius for each cation and anion, respectively. LiF-BeF2 binary glasses seems to be promising candidates for the extreme deep vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) transmitting optical materials owing to their larger band gap. However, it is chemically unstable, and so, have no practical application for lens systems in micro lithography equipments and substrate materials for F2 (157nm) excimer laser[4]. There are also few reports on the VUV transparency of multicomponent aluminium fluoroberyllate glasses from the view point of their compositional dependencies. The purpose of this paper is to prepare deep VUV transmitting optical materials and determine the optimum glass compositions for aluminium fluoroberyllate glasses investigating their thermal stabilization against crystallization."

An inclined cooling plate is utilized as a modification in the compocasting process of magnesium alloy and the mechanical properties of the composites obtained are studied in this work. Based on crystal separation theory, molten AZ91D is poured onto an inclined plate in order to produce solidification nuclei inside the fluid metal, and is mechanically stirred while reinforcement is added. Particulate SiC was utilized as reinforcement in quantities varying from 0 to 15%vol. Dispersion of the reinforcement was observed by macro and microstructure analysis. SiC was properly mixed into matrix until 15%vol., and Vickers hardness tests were carried out for the composites produced. Results obtained for hardness were shown to increase with reinforcement addition and comparable to those of traditional compocasting. Utilization of Inclined Cooling Plate produced good inclusion and homogenization of SiC through an AZ91D matrix, at lower temperatures and shorter times than traditional compocasting.

"This paper describes the development of a 3D finite element model for predicting ground movements caused by construction of 7.1 m diameter twin bored tunnels for the Crossrail project in London using Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines. The model uses the commercial FE code, Plaxis 3D, to represent the face pressure, conical shield, grouting process and activation of precast segmental concrete lining systems through a set of boundary conditions that advance through the soil mass along a prescribed trajectory. Soil behavior is described using the Mohr-Coulomb soil model with input parameters calibrated from laboratory element tests. The analyses focus on the performance of the EPB tunneling machines in greenfield conditions beneath Hyde Park, where the tunneling occurs within deep layers of relatively uniform London Clay. The model predictions are in good agreement with surface and sub-surface vertical settlements measured at a well-instrumented section, but tend to overestimate the measured lateral displacements towards the tunnel. Ongoing studies are focused on the role of soil behavior and the approximations in FE model predictions of tunnel-induced ground deformations. Introduction Since their introduction in the 1970’s, closed-face Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines have become widely used for soft ground tunnel construction. The EPB design relies on a screw conveyor system to regulate the pressure of the excavated soil/spoil within the head chamber and hence control stability at the face of the machine. One of the key design issues in the application of EPB machines is to establish how control parameters, including the advance rate, face pressure and grouting processes (used to compensate for the tail void at the rear of the shield and to infill gaps between the precast lining rings and surrounding soil) affect and/or control the far-field ground movements. For closed-face systems, short-term deformations are associated with ground losses at the face, overcutting and ploughing of the shield and poor control of grouting in the tail void; while long-term deformations can occur due to consolidation and creep within the surrounding soil (and are closely connected to the seepage boundary conditions;e.g., Laver & Soga, 2012). The control parameters for advancing the EPB machine can have a significant effect on the magnitude and distribution of the far-field deformations. Therefore, analyses of the ground response to tunneling require accurate modeling of the soil stratigraphy and constitutive behavior as well as the construction process. Finite element (FE) methods have been used to simulate tunnel construction since the early 1980s, but only a few studies involved three-dimensional modelling of mechanized tunneling (e.g., Finno and Clough 1985; Bernat and Cambou 1999; Swoboda and Abu-Krisha 1999; Dias et.al. 2000; Melis et.al. 2002; Kasper and Meschke 2004; Möller 2006). In order to get a better understanding of the effect of the construction process and soil properties on the development of the ground deformations more comprehensive models of tunnel excavation and tunnel support are required in order to capture the 3D nature of mechanized tunneling and the effect of construction parameters such as advance rate, face and grout pressure."

"The need for spodumene as a source of lithia for war purposes led to the exploitation of the Edison pegmatite deposit 1-1/2 miles southeast of Keystone, S. Dak. The operation was conducted during 1943 and 1944 by the Lor Mining Co., Rapid City, S. Dak. Spodumene concentrates in the ratio of 15:1 were recovered by hand picking from a sorting belt. This method was expensive and wasteful of spodumene, owing to the small size of the crystals.Data4/ obtained by the Bureau of Mines indicates that blunging with hydroflouric acid or sodium hydroxide is a prerequisite to selective flotation. Results of tests by Denver Equipment Co., Denver, Colo., indicate that economic recoveries can be obtained in an alkaline circuit after desliming.At the request of the Lor Mining Co., K. L. Erickson, metallurgical engineer, was permitted to work in the pegmatite research laboratory to verify previous investigations and to determine problems that might be involved in commercial milling. The ensuing investigation indicated that electrolytes in the mill water produced a profound inhibiting action on the flotation of Edison spodumone.An investigation of mill water from various sources showed that some waters are suitable for the process and others are not. Subsequent testing showed that all of the available waters are suitable after treatment. The flotation of the Edison spodumene in an alkaline circuit after desliming and using oleic acid as collector is efficient and economical when the water does not contain impurities.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B.Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches arc under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.As the work was of a practical nature, samples from possible mill-water sources in the southern Black Hills were obtained, and commercial softening and demineralizing methods were investigated. Data on various waters tested are given in table 1."

Thiosulfate leaching has been considered as the most promising alternative to cyanidation for the recovery of gold from ores. The chemistry of the ammonia-thiosulfate-copper system is complicated due to the simultaneous presence of complexing ligands such as ammonia and thiosulfate, the Cu(II)-CU(I) redox couple and the stability of thiosulfate in solution. However, acceptable gold leaching rates can be achieved by maintaining suitable concentrations of thiosulfate, ammonia, cop-per and oxygen in the leach solution. The leaching of gold in thiosulfate solution is an electrochemical reaction involving the oxidation of gold to gold thiosulfate and the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I). Previous studies have shown that the reaction rate of gold was much higher in the presence of am-monia thiosulfate than corresponding sodium thiosulfate. This indicates that cations may affect the anodic oxidation of gold in thiosulfate solution. The present study utilises electrochemical tech-niques to study the anodic oxidation of gold in thiosulfate medium in the presence of the different alkali metal and alkaline earth metal ions. It has been shown that the presence of the heavier cations such as potassium, calcium, and caesium enhance the oxidation of gold in thiosulfate solution. Leaching tests also indicated the improved recovery of gold from a sulfide ore with the addition of heavier cations. XPS results demonstrated that the binding energy for gold shifted to lower values in the presence of the heavier cations, indicating the ready formation of ion-pair with gold thiosulfate at the gold surface during adsorption.

"Vitrification is considered as an attractive procedure for municipal solid waste incineration ash, which can realize the volume reduction and innocent treatment of incineration ash, as well as reuse of bottom ash. The main oxide components of molten ash slag are CaO, Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3, MgO, and Na2O, accounting for more than 90% of the total mass. The phase relations and thermodynamic properties of the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-FeOx-MgO-Na2O oxide system is highly required, and is of great scientific significance for optimization of vitrification processing and sustainable resource utilization of melting slag. A study on the equilibria phase relations of CaO-SiO2-MgO-FeOx system was done by using CALPHAD method based on FactSage in this paper. The modeling parameters for the thermodynamic properties of liquid phase in CaO-SiO2-MgO-FeOx system were established and the equilibrium phase relations of MgO-SiO2-FeOx and CaO-SiO2-FeOx-MgO systems were calculated for different temperatures and oxygen partial pressures.IntroductionThe main oxide components of vitrified bottom ash slag are CaO, Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3, MgO, and Na2O, accounting for more than 90% of the bottom ash by weight [1]. During slag processing and modification, the knowledge of thermodynamic properties and liquidus temperature in the related slag system is highly required [2-5], which is not yet available. Through literature survey [6-9], it is clear that the systematic information on the concerned complex slag system is scarce. Most binary subsystems except FeOx-Na2O have been investigated well. Among ternary subsystems, few phase relations of the Na2O-MgO-SiO2 ternary system are available. For the phase relations of the system Na2O-MgO-Al2O3, all the studies are focused on the Al2O3-rich region. Investigation on the CaO-Al2O3-FeOx system is limited to Fe2O3-containing system with relatively higher oxygen potential. Most quaternary systems are not studied well except the CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system, mainly due to their metallurgical importance. Figure 1 demonstrates the research status of the vitrified bottom ash slag with almost zero effort [10]. The effort here is defined based on the published literature by considering the number of publications, the investigated composition ranges, and the research details. So far the engineers in the field have to make assumptions of the thermodynamic properties of the simplified oxide system, without taking into consideration the interactions of the different oxide components, which hinders the development of the slag valorization and utilization. In order to provide thermodynamic properties for the application of the vitrified bottom ash, the six-component oxide system (CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-FeOx-Na2O) will be investigated through both experimental approach and computer modeling."

The smelter off-gas cleaning and the weak acid treatment at Outokumpu Harjavalta Metals Oy are presented and described in this paper. The smelter consists of the copper and nickel smelters and the acid plant of three separate acid plants two of which are double contact and one single plant and of one liquid sulphur dioxide plant. The preliminary cooling and flue dust separation of the smelter off-gases from the copper and nickel flash smelting furnaces and converters in the waste heat boilers and in the hot electrostatic precipitators are described. The final cooling and cleaning of the gases in the scrubbers at the sulphuric acid plant and the treatment of the weak acid in the vacuum and in the submerged combustion evaporators for the removal of impurities are pre¬sented as well as the treatment of the condensates from the evaporators. The attention is paid to the generation of sulphur trioxide in the smelter off-gas and to the treatment of that in the weak acid bleed-off and to the utilization of the treated acid.

One of the key objectives in production from any mine is the minimisation of ore loss and dilution. This can only be achieved when the distribution of ore within the mine is known. The distribution of ore is usually evaluated from a combination of drill hole information and underground mapping data. Three-dimensional models of the ore distribution are then constructed by interpolating grades, contact locations and confirming these estimates through mapping. While the interpolation procedure can incorporate an understanding of the local geological conditions, it is an approximation and thus susceptible to some degree of ore loss or dilution. Naturally, such problems increase in areas of sparse geologic information or greater geologic complexity. Borehole radar offers an approach to decrease the interpolative aspects of modelling by providing a continuous image of some ore contacts. Borehole radar works by building a two-dimensional image of an ore contact from radio waves bounced off the contact from closely spaced positions along a borehole. This image can be imported into Datamine (or a similar design package) and incorporated into geological models of a given ore block. The results of a trial survey from the Mariners nickel mine at Kambalda are presented to illustrate the improved level of detail and accuracy that can be achieved through the incorporation of borehole radar into orebody delineation practice. Once implemented on a large-scale this technique has the potential to greatly increase the cost-effectiveness of long hole stoping at Kambalda, through increased ore recovery and reduced dilution.

The kinetics of the reoxidation of zinc vapour by carbon dioxide and water vapour onto quartz and zinc oxide substrates is qualitatively understood and this pertains to the conditions found as the gases are being transferred from the furnace to the splash condenser. However, re-oxidation also occurs in the shaft of the furnace where the solid substrates are sinter and metallurgical coke. It was found that there was a threefold increase in the rate of oxidation on sinter, compared to quartz and a 30 to 300 increase in rate on the coke. This was attributed to the high surface area offered by these materials.

"I THANK YOU for the invitation which The Mining Society of Nova Scotia extended, originally to Gordon Berry, manager 'of our Point Tupper Refinery, to join you at this meeting and discuss refining and petrochemicals in their relation to this region. There are natural advantages in Nova Scotia which have made possible, and will continue to make possible, sizeable developments both in petroleum refining and in chemicals. Equally, however, as is the case everywhere, there are certain constraints. For clarity in this presentation, I will state some of these constraints right at the beginning. First, of any future developments from now on, only a small proportion of the products can be expected to go into local markets. I can make the point best with a few figures. Petroleum companies all have market forecasts. None ever work out to be perfect, but the trends are relatively predictable and the orders of magnitude are certainly correct. "The article presents the results of the research aimed at development and testing of new effective reagents – collectors and green modifiers for more complete extraction of gold and platinum to concentrates at reduced loss with waste products. The main deposits of Au and PGM ores of Russia and abroad are presented by refractory raw material with the non-uniform finely-interspersed sulfide mineralization, submicron gold and platinum, the low metal content, non-uniform distribution of valuable minerals. and show low indicators of recovery. The main losses of precious metals (up to 15 %) at flotation are associated with thin slam tailings because of inefficiency of standard reagent modes.In the paper, the new trends in design of collecting agents for extraction of gold and PGM sulfide minerals and their application in flotation tests are substantiated. The original technique for obtaining the modified collector reagents – dithiocarbamate, dithiophoshpinate and dithiazine, incorporated non-ionic compounds that are able to generate stable complexes with gold and platinum has been developed. A novel class of collectors – cloud point polymers showed high flotation recovery of fine particles of gold and platinum. The original technique to create the mineral samples of natural sulfides with ""invisible"" or sub-micron gold on their surface designed helped to indicate the mechanism of selective adsorption of novel agents on Au and Pt-sulfide minerals. Extractive UV spectrophotometry, potential measurements, X-ray phase and spectral analysis, scanning electronic microscopy (SEAM), laser SIM and AFM microscopy were applied to analyze the adsorbed layer of modified reagents on the mineral surface. Selective hydrophobic covering on the surface of micro- and nanoparticles of noble metals provided an increase in their extraction during flotation. New reagent modes of modified collectors and green modifiers were tested in scaled-up laboratory flotation and the results obtained demonstrated the increased quality of the concentrates in terms of gold content by 1.5 times and higher gold recovery by 1.5-5%. "Understanding the thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) behavior of materials plays a significant role in the safety design of critical components used in aerospace and automotive industries, such as engine blocks and cylinder heads, which undergo the cyclic change of temperature and stress. However, the cyclic changes of temperature, stress and strain make it difficult using the traditional testing methods to accurately simulate the TMF process. In the present work, the Gleeble® 3800 system was successfully applied to develop a reliable procedure to measure the TMF behavior of aluminum alloys. The modified setup together with the new designed program allows the Gleeble system to precisely simulate the cyclic profiles of temperature and mechanical strain. The novel procedure includes the calibration and verification of the TMF setup to ensure the test validity with Young’s modulus measurement, multi-cycle measurement of the thermal strain and zero stress adjustment followed by online monitoring the TMF cycles. The results of the TMF testing of an AA6061 alloy under cyclic temperatures (60–300°C) and various strain amplitudes (0.2–0.6%) were demonstrated. Its TMF behavior was characterized by the typical hysteresis loops and cyclic stress-strain response.INTRODUCTION The thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) behaviour becomes increasing important to evaluate the elevated-temperature properties of materials used as the critical components in automotive and aerospace industries, such as the gas turbines (Hu, Shi & Yang, 2016; Moverare, 2007; Segersäll et al., 2015) and engine blocks (Grieb, Christ & Plege, 2010; Javidani & Larouche, 2014). During the cycles of start-up and shutdown of the engines, these components undergo a complex change of loading. Meanwhile, a dramatic temperature gradient exists on the components due to the cooling system. Therefore, the cyclic changes of load and temperature can give rise to the TMF and may limit the use life of such components (Hu, Shi & Yang, 2016; Javidani & Larouche, 2014; Moverare, 2007). Hence, performing the TMF tests to precisely simulate the cyclic changes of load and temperature to understand the TMF behaviours of materials is playing a significant role in the safety design of these components. For TMF tests, two principal types of cycles are generally employed, including the in-phase (IP) cycle where the load and temperature are at the same phase (i.e. maximum load at highest temperature) and out-of-phase (OP) cycle where the maximum load is applied at minimum temperature (Kliemt, 2012; Miller, 2014). The most significant damage mechanisms in engine components are reported to be OP TMF cycles (Javidani & Larouche, 2014; Kliemt, 2012)."

Graphite with layers structure is easily to form graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) by means of intercalation reactions due to the weak cohesion force among carbon layers, van der Waal?s interactions. By controlling the oxidation-intercalation, high quality exfoliated graphite with low residual sulfur content and MClx-GICs (M=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) powder for electromagnetic wave absorbing and shielding materials have been invented. The expansion volume of expandable graphite can be larger than 160 mL/g while the residual sulfur content is less than 800 ppm. The MClx-GICs powder can shield infrared ray and laser completely up to 15 min. We have also in-vented exfoliated graphite for heavy oil adsorption and mild-expansion exfoliated graphite for anode materials in lithium ion battery by controlling the intercalation/de-intercalation. The exfoliated graphite can adsorb heavy oil up to 80 g/g, it also exhibits better performance than commercial active carbon in sewage treatment. The mild-expansion exfoliated graphite as anode material shows high capacity of 370 mAh/g and good cycle performance.

The Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB) is one of the world's largest reserves of primary sulphides containing base metals (Cu, Zn, Pb), precious metals and some special metals such as indium. Estimated resources are over 1,500 million tonnes of volcanogenic massive sulphide ores. From 1980´s Europe lives the decline in its mines mainly motivated by the low price of the metals. One aspect that contributed equally to this was the ecological disaster produced by the discharge of more than seven million tonnes from the tailings dam of Boliden-Apirsa (Aznalcollar) in 1998. Today the situation is different; the companies present in the IPB have given evidence that it is possible to reconcile mining projects and care on the environment, and the regional authorities are opening a public tender to re-start Aznalcollar mine. A new challenging era has been started at this Spanish/Portuguese mining area. This paper presents the results and preliminary economics of a project devoted to IPB primary sulphides processing through different technology approach, e.g. conventional selective flotation against bulk flotation or mixed metals flotation combined with hydrometallurgical processing.

This work presents a kinetics study covering the effects of temperature over the reduction rates of a carbon composite briquette, aiming its use as burden in some of the new alternate ironmaking technologies, such as the Tecnored process. It is reported that increases in the temperature increases the reaction rate. Additionally, the morphology of the iron phase generated during the reduction of these briquettes is presented. It was possible to verify that three types of iron morphology occurred during the process: an external, dense and continuous iron layer, the presence of iron globules at the center of the briquettes and whiskers at the briquette's core. The measurement of the carbon content on the globules and the external iron layer is also presented.

There are many aspects of a grinding mill supply and installation that can result in the mill not operating as intended, resulting in unplanned shutdowns, poor reliability and headaches for all concerned. One of the largest aspects, both in criticality and physical mass, is the mill foundation; if not properly specified, designed and constructed the mill operation will be compromised. The mill foundation starts with the design specification and loading diagram supplied by the mill builder. The importance of understanding these documents and how to apply them is critical for the start of any mill project. When designing mills with a GMD the foundation must be properly modeled to ensure that all interactions of the mill and motor structures, foundation and subsurface strata behave in the intended fashion. All of the previous efforts can be laid to waste if the construction of the mill foundation is poorly handled. Mill foundations are typically the most massive concrete structure at a processing plant and can easily cause nightmares for inexperienced contactors. This paper explores some of the more important facets along the lifecycle of the grinding mill foundation.
