"A sintered SiC (Tyranno-SA) fiber-reinforced MAS glass matrix composite was fabricated by using a slurry infiltration method and hot-pressing. The microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated: To prepare the preform, the MAS glass slurry including a dispersing agent was infiltrated into a bundle of the fibers. The preform was then hot-pressed under the conditions of 1473 K, 30 MPa, 3.6 ksec. A unidirectionally-reinforced oxide matrix composite with 50% Vf. of the fiber and a density of 2.84 g/cm3 was obtained. As the mechanical properties at room temperature, the three-point flexural strength- and quasi-static adsorbed energy were 500 MPa arid 6,000 J/m2, respectively. Without graphite or an h-BN pre-coating on the surface of the fiber, pull-out and bridging of the fibers from the matrix was found, and this leads to a high value of the adsorbed energy. By TEM observation, nano-scale crystalline products were found between the fibers and the glass matrix. The push-out test reveals that this layer causes the appropriate debonding of the interface during the fracture process of the composite.Introduction It is known that the CFCCs (continuous-fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites) are characterized by their non-linear fracture behavior, which is' hardly found in monolithic ceramic materials. It is inevitable for the CFCCs to exhibit a large fracture toughness so 'that debonding of the fiber/matrix interface; pull-out and bridging of the fibers then' occurs during the fracture process. This series of fracture behavior is known as the so-called ""the mechanism of toughening of the CFCCs"". Thus, different from the MMCs in which strong interfacial bonding is necessary, the interfacial strength of the CFCCs has to be controlled. As techniques for controlling the interfacial strength, it is also known that both a CVD-graphite coating and an h-BN coating are effective to induce the mechanism of toughening[1,2]. In the case, of the Si-C-O or Si-Ti-C-O fibers/glass or crystalline oxide matrix composites, it is reported that the formation of the in-situ graphite layer, which is also effective to increase the fracture toughness of the CFCCs, is often found during the fabrication process such as hot-pressing. The lower the crystallinity of the Si-C-O fibers, the higher is the tendency to form the in-situ graphite layer as found by the chemical reaction between the fibers and the glass matrices[3-12]. On the-other hand crystallized stoichiometric 'SiC fibers are attractive for high temperature service because of the higher phase stability compared to the Si¬C-O or Si-Ti-C-O fibers. However, in the previous, studies, the mechanical properties and the interfacial chemical reaction of the crystallized SiC fibers / glass matrix Composites have still been unknown. In this study, a polycrystalline 'sintered SiC fiber-reinforced MAS glass composite was fabricated. The mechanical properties and microstructure were then investigated. The slurry infiltration technique followed by hot-pressing was used to prepare the composites. The formation of the in-situ graphite layer and the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties at room temperature were examined by the TEM observation of the fiber/matrix interface."

Mixed phase titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles synthesized through hydrolysis of TiCl4 solution at different conditions, namely concentration, pH, and residence time are characterized and evaluated as photocatalysts. The process is operated in a continuous stirred-tank reactor, CSTR giving blends of anatase, brookite, and rutile nanoparticles that were further evaluated to find the optimum mixture for a photocatalytic sorption material. The titania nanoparticles are first characterized in terms of photocatalytic activity under UV light illumination using an organic model compound (methyl orange) and after that are tested for removal of toxic selenate and selenite species from simulated effluent waters.

Great Salt Lake Minerals & Chemicals Corporation (GSL), a subsidiary of Gulf Resources & Chemical Corporation, is located on the east side of the Great Salt Lake, approximately 20 miles from Ogden, Utah. GSL processes brine from the north arm of the lake to produce potash, salt cake, salt and magnesium chloride brine. Potash fertilizer, in the form of K2SO4 is GSL's primary product. The GSL Sulfate of Potash Complex The GSL potash complex (depicted in Figure I) is divided into a solar evaporation pond system and the process plants. The solar,evaporation system consists of a 17,000-acre (68.8 Km2) ponding operation where the various salts deposit during the summer evaporation season, and a harvesting operation which recovers the deposits during the remainder of the year. The harvest is either preconcentrated in the flotation plant or processed directly in the chemical plant where sulfate of potash (SOP) is produced. The chemistry of the lake brine results in a solar deposit con¬taining primarily kainite (KCl-MgSO4.3H20), schoenite (K2SO4?MgSO4^ 6H2O), and halite (NaCI), with some carnallite (KCl.MgCl2.6H20) and epsomite (MgSO4.7H20). Other minor minerals may be deposited, depending upon the weather during the evaporation season. Each year, the solar deposit in the evaporation ponds will greatly depend upon the summer weather conditions, which have in the past proven to be quite unpredictable. Weather may alter both the quantity of the solar deposit and the composition of this deposit. The Bureau of Mines investigated the Gypsum-Camel deposit on Iyoukeen Cove Chichagof Island, Southeastern Alaska, from April 21 to August 26, 1948, as A part of the United States Department of the Interior program for developing an Alaskan construction industry. As gypsum is one of the components necessary for the manufacture of cement and one of the raw materials for plaster and plaster-board products, it is desirable to locate and develop a readily accessible deposit of gypsum in Alaska. In 1928, B. D. Stewart of the Territorial Department of Mines surveyed the gypsum deposits at Iyoukeen Cove, and during the summer of 1946 George M. Flint, Jr., and Edward H. Cobb of the Federal Geological Survey examined and mapped the old workings at Gypsum Creek and the prospect at Iyoukeen Cove. Both the Territorial Department of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey recommended the Gypsum-Camel prospect as warranting a diamond-drilling program by the Bureau of Mines. The Bureau of Mines project consisted of cleaning out and sampling, the old underground workings and diamond drilling from the surface to ascertain the lateral extensions of the deposit.

Sedimentation behaviour of siliceous mill tailings derived from a magnetite-chalcopyrite ore in fresh water, fresh water - sea water mixtures and full-salinity sea waters are compared. Results of batch settling tests are presented in the form of settling curves and solids flux curves. The addition of a few per cent of sea water markedly enhanced the zone sedimentation rate due to particle agglomeration caused by a reduction in zeta potential of the suspended solids. The presence of a small amount of residual, previously magnetized magnetite in the tailings also enhanced agglomeration and sedimentation. The significance of these results to submarine disposal of mill tailings is discussed.

"""The theory of buckling of shafts and Steel tunnel-linings"" was published by E. Amstutz in 1970 and commented on by S. Jacobsen in 1974. The authors have revised and enhanced Amstutz’s work to address Jacobsen's comments on its limitations and to extend its validity over a wider range of pipe/shaft geometries, including those commonly found in deep mine access shafts. The author has looked at Amstutz’s assessment of strengthening with flexible shear anchorages and adapted the theory of non-linear shear deformation response of bolts to develop a method of assessing increased buckling capacity utilising the full plastic shear capacity of studs. INTRODUCTION “Amstutz Buckling” refers to the buckling of pipe embedded in concrete under external uniform pressure. In terms of a mining environment, this relates directly to the design of a watertight shaft. This load case will commonly occur where a main shaft is cast against a geostatically stable primary liner and the only load applied to the final shaft is that of a uniform ground water load. Ernst Amstutz wrote his first paper on buckling of pressure-shaft steel linings in 1950 and subsequently improved his theory (Amstutz, 1970), which was then widely adopted for use within the industry. Years later, an alternative approach (Jacobsen, 1974) was proposed. Within his paper Jacobsen critiques Amstutz work, identifying some mathematical inconsistencies and highlighting limitations of the theory imposed by approximations adopted by Amstutz. Despite these limitations Amstutz work has still been used as the favoured design theory for use in the mining industry. In reviewing this body of work the author realised that with the advent of readily available computing software it was possible to adopt an iterative approach using Amstutz approximate formulae to find a solution to the original precise formulae, thus eliminating the limitations highlighted by Jacobsen The shear deformation to load characteristics of bolts has long been established (Crawford & Kulak 1968) and used for the plastic design of bolted connections in shear. This relationship is directly transferable to the design of shear studs, typical properties are well known, and actual values easily established in simple lab tests. The author has taken this relationship and modified Amstutz theory (Amstutz, 1970) for shear anchored strengthened liner buckling, to give a more efficient solution, using readily available material properties."

This paper describes an experimental setup for multiple-fan ventilation systems at the ventilation laboratory of the WVU Department of Mining Engineering. Housed in a 30 ft by 70 ft room, the experimental setup consists of three 18 in. variable-speed axial-flow fans, the 18 in. diameter fiberglass tubing and fittings for arranging networks, and the pitot tube measuring and data acquisition system. The fiberglass tubing and fans can be organized into the non-planner network of two fans or three-fans. It is mainly designed for studying the characteristic curves, operating points, and fan stall for the multiple-fan ventilation system.

In this work, the effects of CaO/SiO2 ratio and the FeSO4 and FeS2 contents on the stability of the mineralogical species in chromium-based slags were studied. The chemical stability was evaluated by leaching with an acid solution. The main Cr-compounds in slags with FeSO4 and CaO/SiO2=1 were FeCr2O4 and Ca3Cr2Si3O12, while Cr3S4 predominated in slags with FeS2. The slags with CaO/SiO2=2 mainly contained CaCr2O4. The highest Cr concentration levels in the leaching liquors corresponded to slags with CaO/SiO2= 2, and the lowest Cr concentration corresponded to slags with high FeSO4 or FeS2, owing to the stable binding of chromium in the compounds FeCr2O4, Cr3S4 and FeS•Cr2O3.

In fire refining of copper, the affinities of various impurity elements on dissolved oxygen is of great significance. Further, in the design of oxygen probes in liquid copper, the influence of solute interactions on the activity of oxygen need to be considered in order to evaluate the oxygen concentration in molten copper. The present paper presents a series of measurements of the activities of oxygen in liquid Cu-M-o alloys (where M stands for Mn, Zn, As, Se or Te) carried out by the present group employing the solid electrolyte galvanic cell technique. Extreme care was taken to control the oxygen potentials in the inert gas atmosphere, and to keep the oxygen levels very low in the molten metal. The oxygen content was determined by analysis of the samples taken out from the melt. The results obtained showed that Mn has a strong negative influence on the activity coefficient of oxygen in liquid copper. A similar, but less prominent effect was observed in the case of Zn. Arsenic had no influence on the activity of oxygen in Cu (liq.). Se and Te had slight negative effect on oxygen activities in copper at XO > 10-5, while at lower oxygen levels the interaction coefficients were found to be positive. The results obtained were compared with empirical models for the calculation of interaction coefficients available in literature.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory experiments to determine the change during retorting in the apparent permeability and the degree of compaction of beds of broken oil shale. Grades of oil shale studied ranged from 20.6 to 46.7 gallons of oil per ton (gpt), and the simulated overburden pressures applied to the shale were from 300 to 900 psi. Linear regression analysis of the data produced equations describing the response of the oil shale. Oil shales of approximately 20 gpt experience only minor apparent permeability reductions under test conditions, but richer shales (30 to 50 gpt) lose essentially all permeability. The permeability reductions were accompanied by corresponding decreases in bed height that ranged up to 37 percent of the original bed height.

"A downward trend in tyre life on haul trucks at an open pit iron ore mine prompted an investigation into the current tyre management strategy in order to improve tyre life. ‘Best practice’ was compared to the current tyre management strategy at the mine to determine aspects that could be improved. Aspects that showed significant room for improvement included employee tyre awareness, tyre pressure maintenance, and road conditions. For each of these aspects a plausible alternative was suggested.A new tyre management strategy was formulated as a step-by-step guide on how to implement the proposed changes. Each step introduces new initiatives but at the same time builds on the previous step’s success. A sensitivity analyses was performed to determine the impact of the proposed changes, with the variables being the reduction in the percentage of premature tyre failure, and the reduction of the site wear rate.The ‘most likely’ scenario showed an increase in tyre life of 41% for the Komatsu 730 trucks and 105% for the CAT 777 trucks if the entire tyre management model is implemented. This would result in a possible annual saving related to tyre usage of R9.2 million. OverviewThe study focused on the tyre life on the main haul fleet at an open pit iron ore mine. The haul fleet consisted of 17 Komatsu 730 (180 t) haul trucks and 12 CAT 777 (90 t) haul trucks.The haulage operation consists entirely of tyre-based haul trucks. Five per cent of the total mining budget is related to tyre costs. Since 2012 there has been a steady decrease in tyre life as measured in operating hours (Figure 1) due to the high percentage of tyres that fail prematurely. In 2014 a total of 41% of all tyres failed prematurely and 61% were classified as ‘worn out’."

Synopsis The colour changes effected in a solution of dithizone by trace amounts of copper, lead, and zinc mineralization provide a sensitive field test for these metals. The method has been used with success by the United States Geological Survey to trace zinc orebodies under residual soils. The dithizone test is used here on samples of non-residual soil overlying a gold-bearing zone in which the gold is associated with disseminated sphalerite, galena, and chalco-pyrite. A gold-bearing zone was successfully traced under overburden ranging from a few inches to five feet in depth by means of this method. The method may prove useful in guiding preliminary trenching through light overburden, by outlining the extent of copper, lead, and zinc mineralization. Introduction The dithizone test affords a rapid, simple, and delicate test for the presence of zinc in soil and water and is suitable for use under field conditions. It has recently been used with success by the United States Geological Survey to outline a zinc-rich area in the residual soil over a primary zinc deposit in Tennessee. The purpose of the present study was to ascertain whether the method could be used to trace a gold-bearing zone, containing associated zinc mineralization, under shallow, non-residual, glacial overburden. The results obtained indicate that the method can be used to guide preliminary trenching in overburden up to six feet in depth. Tests made of the water near lake-shore outcrops also indicate that favourable prospecting zones may be located from the water, within five feet of the shore. It is felt that this simple field test should find a wider use in prospecting, because, under certain conditions, it can outline favourable zones and thereby reduce the amount of blind trenching necessary. The following pages describe the type of deposit tested, the method used, the .results obtained, and the difficulties encountered by a novice in the use of this chemical procedure. During studies of the various methods for determining and specifying the factors that indicate whether a particular coke is better or worse than other cokes for metallurgical uses, questions arose as to the precision of screen-analysis tests on coke. Although the usual index of precision, the standard deviation of the test result, gives a measure of the precision of these data, the experimental determination of the standard deviation for a particular set of conditions requires tests on a large number of duplicate samples. Because this procedure necessaily involves a great deal of labor, an equation for predicting standard deviations from theoretical considerations has been developed. Results predicted with this equation agree satisfactorily with the experimental values and are applicable to tests on coal, coke, gravel, and other bulk materials.

The Integral Fast Reactor (IFR) concept being developed by Argonne National Laboratory is based on the pyrometallurgical processing of spent nuclear metallic fuel with subsequent fabrication into new reactor fuel by an injection casting process. During fabrication, a dilute scrap stream containing uranium alloy fines and broken quartz (Vycor) molds is produced. Waste characterization of this stream, developed by using present operating data and chemical analysis, was used to evaluate different uranium recovery methods and possible process variations for the return of the recovered metal. Two methods, comminution with size separation and electrostatic separation, have been tested and can successfully recover over 94% of the metal. Recycling the recovered metal to the injection casting process was evaluated for the different economic and process impacts. The physical waste parameters and the important separation process variables are discussed relative to their effects on the viability of recycling the material. A discussion of the criteria that is being used to establish the acceptable operating limits is also presented.

Site inspection is an important component of safety management system. In current practices, the inspectors evaluate the safety condition on a construction site with the assistance of a standardised checklist. However, the checklist emphasizes on evaluating the implementation of safety management system, but provides limited task-specific check items for assessing whether the individual construction tasks are conducted under safe condition and in a safe manner. To address this issue, the research presented in this paper aims to provide safety practitioners with comprehensive and taskspecific safety information to promote effective risk identification and facilitate strategic risk control during site inspection. Specifically, this research first builds a project-specific safety information database, which stores potential risks and control measures for each construction task. The research team then develops a mobile decision support tool to retrieve information from the database and support safer decision-making on site. The tool supports users in two ways: one is to provide daily risk checklists and risk control strategies to guide step-by-step inspection alongside the project schedule; the other is to let users input any safety-related keywords during the safety inspection process and the tool returns relevant safety information by applying text mining algorithms. It is ongoing research. This paper presents an overall research framework and discusses the progress in developing safety database and data retrieval concepts. The outcome of the project will help enhance safety management practices and reduce possible risky working conditions on a construction site.

"Highwall miners continue to be implemented by operations to increase recovery, improve margins, and justify higher stripping ratios as high quality surface reserves become increasingly rare. Many times, operations facilitate projected underground operations by leaving an intact highwall for development purposes. These facts result in larger highwalls that are left standing for increased periods of time prior to reclamation. As a consequence, worker exposure and risk is also elevated, resulting in higher potential for accidents or fatalities relating to surface highwalls. Highwall stability is a complex issue, dependent on both geologic and mining factors. Dynamic numerical modeling offers the capability to assess possible stability issues related to blasting-induced ground vibrations. Research has been conducted to evaluate the effect of highwall stability due to ground vibrations from blasting events. Additionally, the relationship of amplitude and frequency, and their impact on highwall stability is investigated. The results of this modeling indicate that amplitude has little impact on stability. However, frequency has a significant impact on highwall stability. INTRODUCTION The number of mining fatalities has declined since 2010, and 2016 is currently on pace to continue this trend (MSHA 2016). This decline can be directly correlated to the decline in surface mining activity and the overall decline of the coal industry. However, since 2002 the percentage of surface coal mine fatalities associated with highwall activities remains relatively high, constituting approximately 15% of all surface mine fatalities. 2014 was the first year with a highwall failure fatality since 2011. Most recent surface coal mining fatalities are associated with machinery and haulage. Table 1 provides a summary of the total surface coal mining fatalities, and the number of highwall failure fatalities dating back to 2010.Highwall stability is a complex issue, dependent upon geology and geologic discontinuities within the rock mass, along with highwall geometry, standing time, and applied stresses. Another possible concern that has not been previously investigated is the effect of blasting-induced stresses on highwall stability and the stability of web/barrier pillar systems as a result of ground vibrations from blasting events. Many modern surface coal mines employ numerous extraction fronts that rely on blasting for primary rock breakage. This results in highwall and highwall pillar systems experiencing blasting-induced stresses of many different types and magnitudes."

"Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) being a power-intensive equipment, EAF based industries are highly dependent on scarce electric energy. This is the reason Government of India is highly concerned about this and laid emphasis on the conservation of electric energy.This paper highlights factors contributing to reduction in specific electric energy consumption in EAF and suggests measures not only for power saving, but also for productivity improvement. To name a few, these are proper sealing of furnace, introduction of oxy-fuel burners, foamy slag practice, increased usage of hot metal/DRI, post-combustion of CO gas for preheating of scrap, improved selection & design criteria of electrics, power demand management, and process automation. Few cases also have been cited, where the above measures have helped in reaping significant benefits.IntroductionFor a long time, Government of India had focused on increase in energy supply, in particular, through electricity generation. Now the emphasis of Government of India has shifted from electricity generation to its conservation for following two reasons:??Power plants have become very cost-intensive??By saving energy, more of it can be delivered at lower cost to the consumersPower generating units, transmission & distribution agencies as well as consumers all have roles to play in the area of energy conservation. By energy conservation, we mean curtailing energy requirement by reducing energy wastages and taking up measures to improve energy efficiency of electric equipment/appliances. In almost all cases, this would be economically beneficial.India’s cost-effective energy conservation potential has been estimated by the Planning Commission at 23 per cent of total commercial energy generated ?1?. A national movement for energy conservation can significantly reduce the need for fresh investment in energy supply systems in coming years. It is imperative that we make all-out effort to realize this potential. Whether a household or a factory, a small shop or a large commercial building, a farmer or an office worker, every user can and must make this effort for his own benefit and for the nation’s benefit as well."

The Turquoise Ridge gold deposit is located near the Getchell Mine, 72 km (42 miles) northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada. The deposit is owned by First Miss Gold Inc. The host rocks consist of Ordovician and Cambrian age shales and limestones. They have been crosscut by the northeast-trending Turquoise Ridge shear zone and northwest-trending shear zones. Gold mineralization occurs at depths from 427 m (1 400 ft.) to 671 m (2 200 ft.), along the intersection of these structures. Large tonnage, flat-lying deposits occur where folded, favorable beds are intersected by the faults. The carbonate within the beds has been replaced with silica, pyrite and arsenic sulfides.
