"Ground vibrations from blasting are undesirable and they are very short in duration with high principal frequencies and high amplitude. Structural response to that kind of excitations may differ significantly from that generated by lower-frequency earthquake vibrations. In practice, the damage to nearby structures to generated ground vibrations has been controlled by various codes and regulations available. However, the existing vibrations limits are not always applicable, as they depend on the geological conditions of the site and the dynamic characteristics of the structure. This paper investigated the influence of the rock-soil interface on the response of pile foundation to ground-borne vibration from rock blasting, through numerical simulations using finite element software LS-DYNA. It is found that the slope of the rock-soil interface greatly influences the location of damage and the extent of damage on the pile. The bottom of the pile is subjected to a larger blast pressure and stresses are highly concentrated at the pile bottom. Thus, the pile bottom can fail in shear before it reaches its plastic moment capacity.INTRODUCTIONDrilling and blasting is the widely accepted method to large-scale rock breaking activities in civil engineering constructions due to its cost effectiveness, higher efficiency and ability to break hard rock. However, ground vibrations from blasting are undesirable and it can cause damage to nearby structures. In practice, the damage to nearby structures to generated ground vibrations has been controlled by various codes and regulations available. The existing vibration limits are not always applicable, as they depend on the geological conditions of the site and dynamic characteristics of the structure.Pile foundations are commonly used as foundations of high-rise buildings and bridges to transfer the heavy loads from the superstructure above through weak compressible soil strata into deeper, competent soil layers which have adequate capacity to carry these loads. In engineering practice, many piles are normally designed to carry mainly vertical loads and very little lateral loads, as typically the vertical loads (the gravity) are significantly larger than the horizontal loads such as wind loading. However, in recent years, there have been a number of reported case studies of translational soil movements that have induced stresses and bending moments that have damaged pile foundations and in some cases resulted in collapse of the superstructure. Typical lateral load include nearby construction activities such as an excavation for a basement or slope, the construction of a road embankment or a tunnel, as well as earthquakes (Abdoun 1997; Goh et al. 1997; 2003; Chen et al. 1999; Dobry et al. 2003; Boulanger et al. 2007; Black et al. 2007)."

The By-Laws of the Ohio Section were approved. The resolutions in reference to the payment of certain contributions and assessments to the Library Board of the United Engineering Societies, adopted by the Board of Directors on June 27, 1919, were rescinded, and the resolution adopted that the income of the James Douglas Trust of $100,000 be paid over to the Library or otherwise applied by it for the purpose of maintaining the Scientific Library of this Institute in such manner as may be deemed advisable in furtherance of the purposes of such trust, and that said income shall be paid on account of and included in. the assessment levied by the United Engineering Societies on the Institute for the maintenance of the joint libraries of the Founder Societies.

The City of Newark is making a comeback with new mixed-use multi-storied Residential Development projects. The majority of developers tend to use driven H-pile deep foundation systems to support their super-structures. A different approach was recommended for one particular new development near the Passaic River. The surficial geology included glacial deposits consisting of loose to dense sand overlaying relatively soft silt and clay and a lower stratum of medium-dense sand. During a preliminary site investigation for the project, bedrock was encountered at depths ranging between approximately 168 feet to 182 feet below the ground surface. Design capacity required a single pile of 200 tons. Two different pile foundation systems were evaluated in conjunction to the typical driven H-pile system in order to review potential costs and construction schedule impacts. The two alternative pile systems evaluated were tapered tube piles and drilled displacement piles. Theoretical calculations were followed by in-situ load testing. The field testing results indicated the use of drilled displacement piles as the best option for a portion of the proposed building. This paper discusses the different piles systems considered, installation and using drilled displacement piles to minimize cost and optimize construction.

Rolling stand 12 (LTx) of long steel, installed in the company A, Piracicaba - SP unit, had presented high levels of vibration, which affected its internal components, such as: shaft, gears and bearings, generating downtime. To evaluate this equipment a study was proposed by the following engineering techniques: Conventional Vibration Analysis, Operational Deflection Shape (ODS) and numerical simulation by the Finite Element Method (FEM). In the Conventional Vibration Analysis, high levels of vibration were observed during manufacturing process, especially when the material reaches the equipment. Impacts generate high values in acceleration, on average 80 m/s² peak to peak. In the moment of impact, misalignment of internal components was observed by ODS. Field results were correlated to those obtained by the Finite Element Method, which allowed to calibrate FEM model. Thus, the most effective structural modification already numerically evaluated was implemented in the system. Afterwards, new measurements by vibration and ODS techniques were performed, and attenuation of vibrational levels and operational mode, which overloaded the internal components rolling stand, were verified.

Moatize Coal Mine is located in Tete Province, in centre of Mozambique. The deposit contains Gondwana allochthonous coals, and has a large amount of mudstone and siltstone banding. Phosphorus levels in the coal can be high which impacts the use of the coals in steel making where phosphorus is considered a contaminant. The Chipanga seam in the Moatize deposit shows considerable variability, vertically within the seam and laterally across the deposit. The data available from the exploration work indicates that the phosphorus is predominantly present as Apatite but the Crandallite minerals also are significant. The concentration of phosphorus varies with coal particle density with the highest phosphorus levels found for the mid density coal which also shows the highest likely levels of apatite or fluorapatite. Crandallite minerals show higher potential concentrations in the Lower density coal..

The most distant distributing point on the system is at Harvard , Ill . , about 35 miles from the plant.. The territory supplied is approximately 85 miles long and 35 miles wide , the total mileage of rains being 1223 , or approximately 24 per cent of all the gas trains in Illinois outside the city of Chicago .

A preliminary examination of the mica deposits in Culberson and Hudspeth Counties , Texas , was made in September 1942 by A. B. Needham, district engineer of the Bureau of Mines . The deposits were reexamined by R. C. Redfield , associate mining engineer of the Bureau in November 1942, at which time he was accompanied by Philip S. Hoyt , geologist , and J. C. Moore , foreman of the Texas Mica and Feldspar Company . Exploratory work was started on February 16 , 1944 , and terminated on April 30 , 1944. A crew of 4 to 10 men was employed under the supervision of the authors .

So well did this phrase capture the spirit of the time that it echoed around the world, and the echo has never stopped. Change is the constant factor in the society in which we live and everyone of us has had experience of the effect which it has had on our professional and personal lives. Change will not stop, it will continue at an increasing rate and the questions we must answer are how do we prepare ourselves to meet the challenge of future change and how do we take advantage of the opportunities which it will bring? It is these questions which I wish to discuss in this address.

The commercially available finite element program Plaxis has a key benefit over other finite element analysis programs in that it has a relatively simple user interface to input and output data. This benefit though may also be it?s weakness in that anyone, regardless of their grounding in geotechnical engineering, may use the program and produce results for design. It is essential, as for all engineering design, that the models are checked by competent engineers. This paper describes the key recurring problems found by the authors when checking Plaxis models, such as the generation of the initial in-situ ground stresses and the modelling of groundwater. Interestingly, the authors have not encountered similar problems when checking finite element models produced using other programs and conclude that this may be due to the higher calibre of modeller needed to use these other programs. The geotechnical industry is in a situation at the moment where senior managers who may not have been trained in finite element modelling are relying on less experienced staff who have had some training in modelling, either at university or post graduation. The quality of this training is variable and all organisations running easy to use programs need to be aware of the potential risks and dangers. Management procedures and engineering checks that are essential to validate the results of these models are described, assuming that those in charge are not experienced modellers themselves. The model checking process by competent persons is absolutely essential and it is hoped that this paper will help those organisations that do not have such procedures as part of their own internal Quality Assurance or design validation system. The procedures described are valid for all finite element programs.

Chalcopyrite represents the most important copper resource and is currently mainly exploited using pyrometallurgy. Bioleaching is an environmental-friendly and economic alternative to conventional mineral processing technologies. The technical feasibility of stirred tank reactor bioleaching of copper ore concentrates using acidophilic iron-/sulfur-oxidising bacteria is proven, however, often incomplete due to inefficient chalcopyrite dissolution. A decoupling of bacterial growth from bioleaching activity in one bioreactor by adjusting appropriate temperatures for both process steps allows for almost complete chalcopyrite dissolution. Separation of copper and recovery of other metals from the PLS was possible by implementation of different biological and chemical techniques. The Ferredox process has been proposed to treat limonitic laterite ores for cobalt and nickel recovery by means of anaerobic reductive dissolution with autotrophic, acidophilic bacteria. As a modification, aerobic reductive dissolution of laterites with acidophilic bacteria has shown economic and environmental advantages over anaerobic reductive dissolution. The reductive bioleaching technology has the potential to increase metal recovery in existing mines, and transform unexploited ores and limonite stockpiles into valuable resources. European Union's transition to a low-carbon and digital economy highly depends on securing the strategic autonomy of the Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) supply chain. This paper introduces a European Commission-funded research and innovation action, AGEMERA, which aims to create detailed geological and people's concerns maps to unlock the CRMs potential in Europe. Furthermore, the project will develop educational packages for schools and universities, publish online CRM-related games and news flashes, and arrange public events to ensure a basis for socially accepted and sustainable exploration and mining of CRMs in Europe. 1. IntroductionCritical Raw Materials (CRMs), crucial for shifting to a low-carbon and digital economy, should focus on maintaining Europe's overall supply-demand balance (Birol, 2022). Therefore, to proactively address the surge in demand and ensure the strategic autonomy of European industrial supply chains, the exploration and extraction of CRMs must be scaled out across the continent. Moreover, mobilizing Europe's domestic potential is vital for the EU to become more resilient and to establish open strategic autonomy as the demand for CRMs continues to increase quickly on a global scale (European Commission, 2021). Base metal extraction and mining have a long history in Europe. Nevertheless, CRMs mining projects have shown less success, although these have a lot of potential (Guzik et al., 2021). The main barriers are a lack of investment in mining and exploration, complicated and drawn-out national permitting processes, and low levels of public support (European Commission, 2020). It is necessary to have a vast amount of knowledge and intelligence about CRM's potential and market impact. Novel non-invasive geophysical survey techniques that enable sustainable exploration must be created and used to enhance mineral system models of ore deposits incorporating CRMs. The minerals policy framework significantly influences the mining industry's performance, stability, and sustainability. However, the EU Member States' mineral policy frameworks differ significantly (MINLEX, 2017). In addition, the Fraser Institute Annual Survey of Mining Companies offers concrete information on how managers and executives of mining companies view key policy areas that impact mining activities in the jurisdiction in which they operate or are familiar (Jackson & Green, 2015).

Dry deep screening is an important method of classifying moist fine mineral. The rigid-flexible coupled elastic screening technology can simultaneously solve the problem of traditional screen surface plugging and the low service life of a screen surface in the process of deep screening. In this paper, two kinds of rigid-flexible coupled elastic screen surfaces were introduced. The structural characteristics of a screen surface were studied. The mechanism of a rigid flexible coupled elastic screen surface to overcome hole blockage was revealed. Finally, 3 mm and 6 mm screening experiments were carried out. When the external moisture content was below 12.79% for the 6 mm dry screening experiment of elastic rod screen surface, the screening efficiency was above 81%. When the external moisture content was below 11.31% for the 3 mm dry screening experiment of elastic screen surface based on ball hitting, the screening efficiency was above 83%. In recent years, the grade of silica in zinc concentrate has increased due to the degradation of zinc content and the increase in impurity content in natural ores. It implies that the development of silica removal technology from zinc concentrate is necessary to solve problems in the smelting process caused by the high content of silica in zinc concentrate. In this paper, the authors investigated the silica removal processes from silica-rich zinc concentrate by mineral processing approaches such as re-grinding and flotation. This study focused on the pulverisation process as a pretreatment for the investigation of individual minerals' liberation from the silica-rich zinc concentrates using different kinds of pulverisers. Flotation experiments were performed to separate silica and zinc concentrate from the pulverizsd feed sample using a pH regulator (NaOH), activator (CuSO4), collecting agent (PAX), and foaming agent (DOW froth 250). Results showed that the liberation rate of silica (SiO2) was reached 75% from 13% by pulverisation in an attritor with a 2 mm ball in diameter, while silica accumulated in a fraction over 20 mm in size. Flotation experiments indicated that silica removal efficiency was achieved by 44% from + 20 mm fraction obtained from pulverisation whereas the grade of silica in froth reached 1.85 mass% from 4.5 mass%. Results indicate that silica could selectively separate from silica-rich zinc concentrate, and 99.8 % zinc recovery is achieved under the studied conditions. The BGRIMM process mineralogy analyser (BPMA) is a new automated mineralogy software platform developed in China. This system consists of the BPMA software platform, controlling a combination of commercially available scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive Xray spectrometry (EDS). The BPMA software controls SEM and EDS through their application programming interfaces, to form an auto-SEM and EDS system that automatically acquires BSE images and X-ray spectra, respectively, and classifies minerals by spectrum-matching. After automated measurement and mineral identification, various quantitative process mineralogical data (e.g., mineral composition, mineral abundance, mineral liberation and intergrowth relationships, mineral associations, particle and grain sizes, particle density distributions, calculated assay, elemental deportments, mineral grade recovery and elemental grade recovery, etc.) would be calculated quickly, accurately and automatically. The BPMA could be used for ore characterisation as a new advanced automated mineralogy technology. O presente trabalho estudou o comportamento de uma liga de titânio ASTM-F67Gr1 frente à corrosão e à tribocorrosão em meio fisiológico. Para a realização desta pesquisa foi desenvolvido um aparato experimental capaz de impor simultaneamente um desgaste mecânico e corrosivo às amostras testadas, visando avaliar o comportamento tribocorrosivo. O meio corrosivo selecionado foi a solução de Ringer. A partir de curvas de polarização potenciodinâmica foi possível obter os parâmetros eletroquímicos necessários à realização dos ensaios de tribocorrosão bem como comprovar a excelente resistência a corrosão do titânio na solução de Ringer. A partir dos ensaios de tribocorrosão foi constatada a influência da velocidade e da carga aplicada, no fenômeno de tribocorrosão. Os resultados evidenciaram uma maior influência da velocidade no incremento da corrosão e da carga aplicada no incremento da sinergia, durante o desgaste tribocorrosivo.

The implementation of the Gas Treatment Plant (GTP) for CSPECEM, Ceara-Brazil is a result of the closed partnership between Paul Wurth Italia S.p.A. and DMT, the German leading company in Coke Oven Gas Treatment Plants. In addition to technical issues reducing emissions, avoiding of waste and saving environment and energy were technical challenges during the engineering phase. Below mentioned three descriptions of technical solutions represents examples of a number other innovations based on DMT’s know-how and experience in the field of by-product plants. Generally the design of the complete GTP is based on the consideration of modern features and design upgrading, with the aim of a safe operation with stable conditions and a long-living cycle of the whole of the plant.

. In this work, samples of the alloy with composition of 50.9 % at. Ni were machined and were subjected to hot tensile test, after the machining all the samples were solubilized so that all were in the same condition during the hot tensile test. The hot tensile tests were performed between the temperatures 350-650°C and the yield stress were between 800 and 597.1 MPa and area reduction between 17 and 75% with respect to the initial area. The test at 350°C shows a fragile fracture characteristic while the hot tensile test above this temperature showed a predominantly ductile fracture. The fragile fracture is evidenced by the river marks that are characteristic of this type of fracture, because in this condition does not promote much plastic deformation. The higher temperatures present ductile fracture, because present the dimples that also characterize this type of fracture. This work shows the temperature relationship in the mechanical properties, more specifically the hot tensile test, in the NiTi alloy.

Tem-se por finalidade a fabricação de um mandril que se adeque à peça forjada e atinja o formato proposto. Através do uso de simulações numéricas computacionais com o software Simufact.forming 12, e simulações com o material modelo plasticina, possíveis geometrias de mandris foram estudadas, variando a angulação na região de troca de diâmetros ao longo do comprimento. Foram estudados ângulos de 0º, 30º e 60º, analisando o comportamento da fluência do material na região.

"The Athabasca Bituminous Sands have been subject to sporadic investigations since the beginning of the century. It is probable, however, that much of what has been learned and achieved concerning the deposit has been accomplished in the last few years.Current exploratory techniques, generally speaking, involve a moderate amount of coring. Electrologs and often radioactive logs are run on most holes and certain types of these archieved excellent qualitative analysis when backed up by some core analysis for calibration. Exploration - is moving back from the river and consequently a permanent network of access roads has been developed within the last few years. Most of the operations take place in the winter time. There are about 90 permit holders at the present time.Some exploratory techniques are set up to go into recovery experiments where rich tar beds are found. It is probable that in the final analysis there will be several successful methods of extraction and that both mining and various in situ techniques will be applicable depending upon the problem locally."
