Introduction In the aggregate, directly and ?indirectly, the pulp and paper industry ? consumes very large quantities of a variety of minerals, or compounds prepared from minerals. This is especially true in the manufacture of news-print, but fine papers, also, account for some of this consumption, in the processes of loading, coating, and otherwise improving the finish. The more important of the minerals used in the industry in Canada are briefly dealt with in the following pages. The list is by no means exhaustive, however. Thus, barite, lithopone, zinc oxide, zinc sulphide, and titanium oxide are used in small quantities in Canada in filling and coating paper. Up to the present time, however, the quantities of these materials used in the paper industry have not sufficed to encourage their manufacture in Canada. In the case of barite (barium sulphate)-or of witherite (barium carbonate)-it may be said that, should deposits of commercial size be discovered in Canada, the ore would have considerable export value, for use in the paper and other industries. China-Clay (Kaolin) Considerable quantities of china-clay are used for brightening and improving the finish of paper, and there is a growing tendency to use larger amounts of this material in newsprint manufacture. No china-clay suitable for paper manufacture is at present produced in Canada, but samples have been forthcoming recently from a deposit near St. Remi d'Amherst, Labelle county, Que., about thirty miles north of the Ottawa river and approximately midway between Montreal and Ottawa, and plans are under way to conduct large-scale tests with this material. Present sources of supply are the United States, England, and Russia.

The wettability of petroleum reservoir materials by water and crude oil has been recognized as an important factor in determining waterflood behavior. The problem of simulating and studying reservoir conditions and characteristics, to produce laboratory results congruous with field experience, has been examined by many methods. (1, 2, 3, 4).4/ The most generally accepted approach to this problem is determining wettability of the porous medium by imbibition methods; or, after solvent extraction, predetermining the wettability of the samples by coating the surface of the medium to render it preferentially oil-or water-wet (3, 5). The emphasis of wettability studies has been placed on the characteristics of the reservoir materials with little consideration being given to the fluids themselves. Therefore, the wetting tendencies of crude oils have been investigated by a recently developed method (6). Imbibition and the more general phenomena of capillary pressure are the most direct ways to measure wettability. The simplest type of capillary pressure observations involves the use of an interfacial-tension capillarimeter, which does not produce as separate values either interfacial tension or contact angle. Actually, these quantities do not have independent significance in reservoir engineering, and the property of wettability they are intended to evaluate is given, immediately by capillarimetric measurements.

"Comparison of experimental data obtained in a benchmark experiment of solidification of a Sn-3%wt.Pb ingot and numerical results of two-dimensional and three-dimensional simulations of the process is presented. The benchmark experiment consisted in solidifying a rectangular ingot of Sn-3%wt.Pb alloy using two heat exchangers. Conditions of solidification were thoroughly controlled due to six thermocouples embedded into each heat exchanger. Due to another array of thermocouples the evolution of the temperature field at a lateral wall of the crucible was registered during the whole experiment. A treatment of the temperature data provided an estimation of the velocity field in the experiment. Post-mortem analyses of the sample provided the pattern of macrostructure of the sample and qualitative segregations pattern. 2D and 3D numerical solidification models are developed to give the distribution of the solute in a solidified sample.IntroductionConvection, either natural or forced, plays a very important role during the solidification. Its intensity and flow pattern affect heat and mass transfer and, consequently, macrostructure and segregation in a solidified ingot [1-4]. The effect of buoyancy convection during solidification has been studied in many laboratory-scale experiments [5-6]. Due to these experiments a general comprehension of formation of various defects in the ingot has been achieved. However, mentioned studies were not consistent since alloys, solidification conditions and configurations were every time chosen arbitrary. That is why the role of each parameter characterizing solidification process remains unclear. Moreover, the question of reproducibility of defects under the same solidification conditions still exists. In addition, most of the experiments suffer from the insufficient knowledge of control parameters that makes difficult their use for validation of models for solidification. These parameters serve as boundary conditions for numerical modeling and their incomplete description leads unavoidably to the errors in simulations. This situation motivated us to develop a setup for benchmark solidification experiments and to perform a set of the solidification experiments which we reported in [7]. Here we presented a comparison between results obtained in a benchmark experiment of solidification of Sn-3%wtPb ingot and its numerical modeling, which was performed in two-dimensional and three-dimensional configurations."

This paper is a brief review of the recent history, and the present status of, of the program designed to develop practical new processes for producing pipeline quality gas from coal. Clean synthetic pipeline-quality gas from coal became a major objective during 1971. Agreement was reached with the American Gas Association, Inc., to cosponsor a $120 million, 4-year program to be funded $80 million by Government and $40 million by American Gas Association. The program was first announced by President Nixon in his Energy Message on June 4, 1971, and a portion of the additional funds needed for the program was approved by the Congress in the December 1971 supplemental budget action. A natural gas shortage has developed in the United States and every indication is that it will worsen. Many transmission and distribution companies have already been forced to curtail sales because of the shortage. Large sums are being committed to systems needed to bring liquefied natural gas from abroad and to plants to manufacture synthetic natural gas from petroleum--also largely imported. On the other hand, there is sufficient domestic coal to supply all of the needed gas through the next century. This accelerated program is designed to provide processes for making gas from coal at costs, including security costs, below the imported alternates. As outlined in the President's Energy Message, OCR and A.G.A. have accelerated the coal gasification program to make it possible to construct and operate a "demonstration plant" (semicommercial size) after 1975. Several processes, in various stages of development as will be described later, are being supported. Concurrently, the overall program will be constantly monitored and evaluated with the assistance of an independent, unbiased contractor. C F Braun of Alhambra, California, was selected for this task and has been actively engaged in it for the last several months. Through continuing studies of the various processes and subprocesses as the pilot plant program continues, optimums will be discerned. These will serve as

The automated geology interpretation (AGI) tool has been developed in BHP Billiton to automate stratigraphy logging of drill holes, using any available quantitative data sets. At present, AGI is set-up to utilise geochemistry and mineralogy from infrared spectroscopic data to predict stratigraphy. Once the AGI tool is calibrated, results show that the tool is capable of automatically defining stratigraphy across all of the deposit types, encountered by BHP Billiton Iron Ore in the north-west of Western Australia. Accuracy of AGI at predicting stratigraphy is on average better than 75 per cent, with average accuracies exceeding 85 per cent for some deposit types. The AGI tool can deliver fast, accurate, consistent and objective geological interpretations.AGI is currently being implemented in BHP Billiton Iron Ore Exploration to streamline the drill hole logging process and allow geologists to spend less time defining stratigraphy at the drill hole level and more time investigating stratigraphy in 3D. Process mineralogy focuses on the chemical components and mineral composition of ore, dissemination size of valuable minerals, the occurrence of valuable and detrimental elements as well as the behavior of each mineral in the process. Through determining process mineralogy parameters and analyzing the characteristics of minerals, the results of process mineralogy study can provide mineralogy data for making a reasonable mineral processing technology program and optimizing the process. A detailed process mineralogy study is carried out for a complex rare metal ore in this paper and the results show that niobium mainly exists in the form of ferrocolumbite as well as nioboaeschynite and zirconium primarily occurs as zircon. The valuable minerals including Th-nioboaeschynite, ferrocolumbite, zircon, etc. have the characteristics of fine dissemination size, wide size range, complex chemical composition and variable physical properties, which mean it is a refractory ore. According to the results of mineral composition of ore, chemical composition of minerals, dissemination size of minerals, magnetism ranges of minerals and the distribution of niobium and zirconium, the process of ?desliming-Nb-Zr bulk flotation? is designed for this ore and the niobium-zirconium bulk rough concentrate with the grade of Nb2O5 9.43%, ZrO2 24.95%, Ta2O5 0.36% and the recovery of Nb2O5 77.66%, ZrO2 76.70%, Ta2O5 75.13% to crude ore can be obtained in the whole process closed-circuit test.

Power plants that utilize conventional wet flue-gas desulfurization methods produce enormous amounts of flue-gas scrubber sludge. A typical 400 MW power station that burns a high sulfur coal produces 170,000 tons of wet flue-gas scrubber sludge per year. This scrubber sludge is currently landfilled at an enormous cost to utility companies. This material could be used as a raw material for industries that use gypsum, such as the wallboard and plaster industries. However, before it can be used as feedstock for these industries, some of the impurities such as unreacted limestone and silicates must be removed from the scrubber sludge. Froth flotation has tremendous potential for separating these impurities from scrubber sludge. In order to select an optimum flotation process, it is necessary to characterize the surface properties of the major components in the scrubber sludge, which consist of calcium sulfite, calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate (limestone), and silica. In this study zeta potential measurements were used to determine the surface charge of the components in scrubber sludge, with the goal of optimizing a froth flotation process to produce a marketable gypsum product for the wallboard and plaster industries.

"Measurements of liquid permeability in the mushy zones of Al-15.42% Cu and Al-8.68% Cu alloy samples have been performed isothermally just above the eutectic temperature, using eutectic liquid as the fluid. A modified method has been developed to determine the specific permeability, Ks, as a function of time during the test from the data collected on these alloys. Factors affecting permeability measurements are discussed. Permeabilties are observed to vary throughout the experiment. This is attributed to rnicrostructural coarsening and channeling that occurs in the sample during the experiment. The permeability is related to the rnicrostructure of the sample using the Kozeny-Carman equation. The correlation between the measured Ks, liquid fraction, gL and the specific solid surface area, Sv, improves markedly when compared to previous studies in which rnicrostructural coarsening was ignored.IntroductionThe permeability of interdendritic liquids flowing through dendritic structures ·is an important parameter needed to predict the level of porosity in castings. The permeability is a component of Darcy's Law, used to estimate the pressure drop due to the resistance to the flow of interdendritic fluid to feed shrinkage. A procedure is described whereby gold-containing calcined concentrates and leach residues from refractory gold ores are smelted with carbon to form a small amount of metal. The gold is liberated upon smelting, and is collected in the molten metallic phase, which is easily separable from the slag. The metallic phase consists of approximately 1 to 15 per cent (by mass) of the material after smelting, and the gold content is generally upgraded by a factor of greater than 6 compared with that of the original roasted material. Recoveries better than 95% have routinely been achieved. The quenched metal contains predominant Fe-Ni alloy, as well as minor Fe sulphides and Cu-Fe sulphides. Trace amounts of Fe-Ni arsenide and Au-Cu alloy are also present. The gold content of the metallic phase can be increased further by oxidation of the hot metal in the presence of silica or slag. This will reduce the amount of metal, and will concentrate the gold in a smaller volume. The metallic phase can then be treated hydrometallurgically to recover the nickel and the gold.

With the burgeoning opportunities for new gold mines to be developed the opportunity now exists for a reassessment of the optimal processing path for these gold ores. Projects have traditionally followed the path of whole ore cyanidation with either Carbon In Pulp (CIP), Carbon In Leach (CIL) or Merrill Crowe. The challenge ahead is whether these traditional processing methods are the best option for stakeholders, or to go beyond CIP and use a combination of currently available technologies that can be used to provide gold recovery at a significantly reduced capital cost and minimal deleterious impact on the environment. Either stand alone or combinations of gravity concentration and flotation, can produce a gold bearing concentrate that can then be fed directly to a batch or continuous intensive cyanidation unit. Treatment of a gravity/flotation concentrate by intensive cyanidation may be processed by the InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) developed by Gekko Systems of Australia. The advantages of the technology combining gravity/flotation followed by intensive cyanidation are significantly reduced capital costs; improved safety due to reduced cyanide inventories; the majority of tailings un-contaminated by cyanide; less energy required due to an opportunity for an increase in grind size û reducing green house gas emissions; detoxification of concentrate tailings can minimise tailings disposal and containment requirements.

"This report describes an exploratory project conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a fluorite deposit near Vado, N. Mex. Results of trenching are given. Together with analyses made upon samples of the ore. The Federal Geological Survey3/ completed a preliminary geologic study and mapped the deposit during the summer of 1944. A Bureau engineer examined the deposit in August 1944. As a result of these investigations, it was concluded that the deposit contained substantial inferred ore reserves. Exploratory work was recommended to obtain information that might possibly lead to production from the property. Assistance was given the Bureau by the Geological Survey.A gasoline-powered air compressor, other equipment, and supplies were delivered to the property from January 20 to 25, 1943. Trenching began under the direction of a Bureau of Mines engineer on January 25, 1947, and ended on March 15, 1945. The results of trenching and sampling form he basis of this report.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. IT is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, R.G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervisions of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."

The markets and applications of Wyoming bentonite deposits are primarily determined by the functional properties of a bentonite ore which results from the unique mineralogy and chemistry of each deposit. Commercial bentonite products contain sodium montmorillonite as the major mineral component, with minor concentrations of accessory minerals such as quartz, opal (silica hydrate), mica, feldspar, gypsum and zeolites. The chemical composition of the sodium montmorillonite influences the functional properties of the bentonite in significant ways. The type and concentration of various accessory minerals also influence the acceptability of the bentonite in each market.

The Refugio Project is located in the Andes mountains of northern Chile, in the Maricunga Hineral Belt. The Verde, Pancho and Guanaco Au ore bodies have been recognized and are Early Miocene in age. Mineralization consists of fine-grained disseminated gold hosted by dacitic to dioritic subvolcanic porphyries. Alteration comprises massive to veinlet-controlled silicification overprinted on earlier potassic and propylitic alteration and surrounded by later argillic alteration. Geologic relationships suggest that the Refugio ore bodies occur within an Early Tertiary volcano overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic basement rocks. Geologic reserves at Refugio are approximately 300 million grams (9.7 million ounces) of gold. The Verde deposit contains 185 million tonnes of mineable and leachable ore with an average grade of 0.90 glt Au and is currently in the pre-construction stage after a positive feasibility study. Proven and probable mining reserves at Verde deposit are 101 million tonnes at an average grade of 1.02 glt gold. Additional potential exists at to other deposits within the Refugio property (Pancho and Guanaco) but no reserves have yet been defined due to the limited drilling to date.

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to interest mining men in the economic possibilities of sand deposits suitable for modern foundry work. Many members of the profession are constantly travelling over the country and it is felt that some knowledge of the necessary properties of foundry sands will enable these men t0 recognize such deposits. It is the experience of the writer that good sands suitable for the varied work of a foundry, such as that of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, at Trail, are almost impossible to obtain from western Canadian sources. It is hoped that the following discussion may arouse some interest in the search for such sands. Sands are used in foundries for two purposes. The main use is for making moulds suitable for receiving hot metal. The mould must retain the? required shape until the metal has solidified. The second use of sand in the foundry is as an abrasive in sand blasting. This is a relatively minor use, and consequently will not be dealt with in detail. Any coarse sand with a high content of quartz will serve this purpose, but round-grained sands are superior to angular types, because they have not the same tendency to shatter on impact with the casting. Sand plays an extremely important part in the successful production of sound castings. This is more evident today than ever before, due to the greater variety of castings and alloys, each of which requires special sand characteristics. Poor sand is responsible for a great many foundry troubles which formerly were attributed to bad? metal; in fact, one investigator goes so far as to say that ninety per cent of bad castings can be traced directly to the sand. Very little of the vast amount of sand distributed over the earth's surface is suitable for moulding. It is the purpose of this paper to describe briefly the properties which are essential in good moulding sand. Sand for this work must be able to withstand the wash and hydrostatic pressure of molten metal, and yet be sufficiently porous to allow the gases generated in the mould to escape.

Kettlebottoms are columnar masses of rock--the preserved casts of ancient tree stumps--embedded in coal mine roof strata (of which they are a part). Because unsupported kettlebottoms can detach from a mine roof without warning, they are a hazard to miners. The primary objectives of this investigation were (1) to better define and describe kettlebottoms and (2) to evaluate kettlebottom support techniques in terms of safety and effectiveness. A telephone survey of mine operators, interviews with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) personnel, and underground mine visits were conducted in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Information gathered during this investigation indicates that the size and frequency of kettlebottoms in mine roof are dependent upon past geologic events and biological processes active during the deposition of roof sediments. To ensure the safety of mine personnel, all undermined kettlebottoms should be supported. The roof should be bolted next to kettlebottoms less than 3 ft in diameter, close enough to allow a portion of a wood or steel header to be extended beneath each kettlebottom for support. Two bolts and a wood plank or steel strap should be employed to support kettlebottoms over 3 ft in diameter.

Many of us are familiar with the history of oil in the Province of Ontario, but for the benefit of those who have never heard the story I will repeat it. In 185 7 J. H. Williams, of Hamilton, an old-country Scotchman, who had the advantage of experience gained from the primitive methods used for refining the oil collected at seepages in Roumania, heard of the "gum beds" along Black creek in Enniskillen township, Lambton county. He erected a small plant in the bush and refined illuminating oil, where the village of Old Springs now stands. The labor of collecting this thick ?gummy substance from the sluggish water of the creek, prompted him to dig a well, the next year ( 1858), in the hope of obtaining a greater quantity. When his excavation reached a gravel bed on top of the rock, oil, resembling "lubricating oil of commerce", rose several feet. Several of these wells were dug and his refining business flourished. The following year the Drake well, in Pennsylvania, was drilled into rock, resulting in an oil find which encouraged one James Shaw to make a similar attempt on Black creek. With a spring-pole drill he completed his well in the spring of 1861 to a depth of 160 feet, and at that depth struck a gusher that flowed uncontrolled for several days. Great excitement followed and the village of Oil Springs had a mushroom growth. The Petrolia field was discovered in 1865. Lick followed up the Thames with a spring-pole rig testing the formations along that river and discovered the original Bothwell field in 1865. During the sixties wells were drilled in many counties in southwestern Ontario.

At Newmont’s Jundee Operation, exploration and resource geologists collaborated to produce an open pit resource model. Using a variety of modelling and estimation techniques but no new data, an uneconomic underground target was converted into a potentially economic open pit evaluation. During an industry downturn, it is more important than ever to efficiently share expertise, ideas and resources to problem solve and produce meaningful project outcomes. The two departments brought together different methods and ideas, and the process showed that certain methods worked better than others in different situations, thus the appropriate method was applied to each part of the evaluation. The results were used to create new procedures and improved lithology modelling and resource model estimations. Adaptability of the geology departments and collaboration such as this are key to ongoing improvements and future mine life at Jundee.CITATION:Dudgeon, K, Paradis, J and Topping, M, 2014. Very few mineral properties spend their entire lifespans from discovery to depletion in the hands of one owner. More likely, properties will have several owners, and partial interests may change quite often. Similarly, mineral companies are bought and sold with frequency, in recent years at what appears to be an accelerating rate. The reasons for selling a property can be manifold -need for additional capital in other parts of the business, need for development capital, realization of a large gain at a perceived high point in the market, pessimistic commodity outlook, retirement of principals, or resolution of estate problems. Regardless of the reasons for a sale, there are specific steps that logically follow. Spruce up the business, package the information, market the property, negotiate the terms, close the sale, and make sure it stays sold. Adherence to certain very basic ground rules in property sales can maximize the profits and minimize the effort.

Sheaves are a critical safety component in a winding system and are expected to survive such extreme loading events as rope break. Sheave designs have often been developed and evolved empirically, consequently many existing sheaves are not necessarily subjected to the detailed analyses that are possible using todayÆs design tools. The design philosophy for sheaves is that the rope should be the weakest link in the system so that associated equipment can function safely for any load up to rope break. A number of failure mechanisms must be considered, but buckling is often prominent. During the course of investigating the feasibility of upgrading the hoisting capacity of a winding system, the capacity of all critical components was reviewed. The sheaves in the system were found to have insufficient spoke buckling capacity for the specified rope. A proposal to increase the spoke buckling capacity by connecting spokes together using a simple tie arrangement was evaluated and found ineffective. An alternative tie arrangement concept was developed and evaluated and shown to be adequate. This paper describes the finite element model, analysis approach and results for the original sheave and the two modifications. The contribution of the sheave rim to the total buckling capacity is evaluated. Some practical issues for spoke tie modifications are discussed.
