(Wilkes-Barre Meeting, June, 1911.) THE arrangement of a flow of cyanide-pulp through Pachuca tanks in agitation, so as to permit a continuous process, instead of alternate filling, agitation, and emptying, has been proposed by various writers within the last two years, and more particularly by A. T. Grothe, agent for the Brown patents on Pachuca tanks in Mexico. It was first put into practice, I believe, by M. H. Kuryla at the Esperanza mine in El Oro, Mexico. The starting of agitation in Pachuca tanks after filling may offer no serious difficulties with ores which do not settle rapidly in such tall tanks; and the adaptation of the tanks to continuous agitation under such conditions may give simply a somewhat more convenient method of treatment and greater agitation-capacity for a given number of tanks, because of the saving -of time lost in filling and discharging. But in the treatment .of pulp which tends to settle rapidly, as in the cyaniding of concentrates or of the whole pulp of ores containing heavy sulphides, the packing of the slime at the bottom may, cause much trouble. The use of the radial air-pipe attachments near the top of the cone and of the air-valve outside of the air-lift .tube at the bottom may obviate the difficulty to some extent; but the action of the radial air-pipes on the cone-sides is that -of a sand-blast, and their continuous use cuts through the tanks. Moreover, even when these pipes are used, some pulps will pack tightly below them in the cones. Under such conditions the use of Pachuca tanks with intermittent filling and discharging becomes a troublesome process. Time is lost in ,starting agitation; large quantities of compressed air are wasted; pulp is blown over the tank-tops; and not infrequently it may be necessary to dig out the bottoms of tanks by hand. This trouble is the only important one occurring in the use of Pachuca tanks; and, since it is caused by intermittent filling, the .arrangement of a continuous flow of pulp from tank to tank,

THE origin of the Mine-Rescue Service of the State of Illinois can be traced to two distinct sources, the work of the Rescue Station at Urbana and the Cherry disaster. During the early part of the year 1909, the Technologic Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey, now the Bureau of Mines, in connection with the Illinois Geological Survey and the College of Engineering of the University of Illinois, established at the University of Illinois, in Urbana, a branch rescue-station to supplement the work of the Pittsburg station of the Geological Survey. As a result of the work of training at the station in Urbana by R. Y. Williams, mining engineer, and James Webb, foreman of the Bureau of Mines, and the use of the helmets at several mine-accidents in the State of Illinois, . the people of the State were somewhat familiar with oxygen-helmets when the Cherry disaster occurred, in November, 1910. The oxygen-helmets were successfully used in connection with that disaster, and upon the recommendation of the Illinois Mining Investigation Commission, the Legislature of the State, assembled in special session during the winter of 1910, passed a bill appropriating $75,000 for the erection and maintenance of three rescue-stations, stipulating that they should be located in the northern, central, and southern parts of the State. The Act also provided that the stations should be in charge of a Commission of seven, two representing the United Mine Workers of Illinois, two the mine-operators, one the Federal Bureau of Mines, one the State mine-inspectors, and one the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Illinois. "This paper will describe dynamic pile testing conducted during installation of driven octagonal precast prestressed concrete piles used as the foundation for this bridge. The piles were long and hence spliced. A number of the piles showed damage near the splices and the damage location was near the ground surface so that the damage could be verified using visual inspection. The piles and splice configuration are still in use today without modification. Further WEAP driveability analysis has been conducted which demonstrates the effect of the splice on pile stresses and a likely failure mode. A slight modification is proposed to the splice that should prevent the damage on future projects.INTRODUCTIONThe bridge site is located on the Olympic Way, Route 41, about 20km north of the regional centre of Albury, NSW. For a long distance north of the site the Olympic Way ""shadows"" the main Melbourne to Sydney rail line and is located on the Western side and in close proximity. At the bridge site there was previously a sharp dog-leg in the road and a right angle level crossing with the road changing to the Eastern side of the rail line, eventually joining up with the Hume Highway, which in turn now becomes a ring-road through the eastern outskirts of Albury. The dog-leg and rail crossing had warning signs and bells, speed restrictions and rumble strips to warn approaching motorists to reduce speed. Site distance was exceptionally good.Approximately 2years before construction a group of five ""high spirited"" young men from the local area were driving south on the Olympic Way adjacent to a south-bound train. It is understood they interacted with the train crew for a period of time. Unfortunately the car and train collided at the level crossing and all of the young men were killed. There were outpourings of grief in the local community and a decision was made to replace the level crossing with a road-over-rail bridge.The bridge was highly skewed with two piers and two high level abutments with fill embankments on both approaches.GROUND CONDITIONSThe site is open grazing country with approximately level ground at the site with surrounding low hills. The geology was unremarkable with consistent stiff clays for a considerable depth.The design required driven precast prestressed pile foundations with the piles to be driven to a considerable depth.Hard driving with high tension stresses were evident from the start of driving and a variety of different pre-bore lengths were adopted in an attempt to minimise driving and potential for damage. At the abutments the pile locations were predrilled for at least the full embankment depth.PILESThe piles were 550mm octagonal prestressed concrete with the pier piles being single piece and the longer abutment piles being two-piece with a ""standard"" epoxy glued box splice. Pier piles and the initial length of the abutment piles were 24m. The add-on piece used at the abutments was 12m. Pile concrete was grade 50MPa."

It is commonly accepted that three types of aquifers exist in the Bushveld Complex: (a) alluvial aquifers in areas of river courses, (b) weathered bedrock aquifer formed by the in-situ weathering of the bedrocks, (c) fractured aquifers underlying the weathered aquifers controlled by the regional and local fracturing of the crystalline rocks. Hydrogeological studies conducted in the Critical Zone of the Bushveld Complex in the western limb show that the UG2 pyroxenite layer is of a particular interest and has a unique aquifer property. It yields much of the groundwater inflow into some mines and can be classified as the most important aquifer in the vicinity of the mining zone. The UG2 pyroxenite aquifer is restricted to the dipping UG2 pyroxenite unit. The unit weathers more intensely than the surrounding norites and anorthosites and is characterized by deeper weathering horizons (two to three times deeper than the surrounding rocks). For much of the UG2 mining area between depths of 35 ? 80 m, stoping of the UG2 takes place approximately 5 ? 7 m below the UG2 pyroxenite aquifer, and usually there is no groundwater inflow into the mine workings. However, unsealed deep exploration boreholes intersecting the UG2 pyroxenite and reaching underground mine workings, or mine roofbolts penetrating the weathered pyroxenite aquifer from underneath, can result in significant groundwater inflows into the underground workings. The reason as to why the UG2 pyroxenite weathers more than the norites and anorthosites has not been fully studied but is suspected to be due to the bedding planes of the unit and mineralogical composition of the particular pyroxenes forming the unit, which result in preferential physical and chemical weathering under atmospheric conditions. The weathered pyroxenes form sand-sized, rounded grains with improved effective porosity and permeability suitable for the storage and passage of groundwater. The orientation of the pyroxenite aquifer can easily be determined as it dips with the Bushveld layered strata. No-flow boundaries can be assumed on the hanging- and footwall of the pyroxenite aquifer and the flow rates can be estimated using 2-dimentional analytical equations. However, this must be confirmed with strong conceptual models since the existence of a fracture network connecting the pyroxenite aquifer with the overlying weathered and/or underling fractured aquifers can complicate the system, lowering the accuracy of analytical models and necessitating the utilization of numerical models.

This paper presents the results of a new method that has been tested to recover metallic cobalt lost by diamond beads from rock cuttings. When dimension stones are cut using diamond wire saws, the beads become worn and, before the end of their cycle life, lose a certain amount of material; this material is prevalently made up of sintered metal and diamonds. The material is then washed away, together with rock debris, in a dilute pulp. In effect, this process involves the dispersion of economically valuable, but potentially polluting, materials (such as cobalt) that are used to confer indispensable technological features to the beads. This current research aims to develop a waste-processing pilot plant (High-gradient Magnetic Separator or HGMS) to recover metallic components from the pulp by means of a suitable separation. The research\u2019s purposes are two-fold: a. to remove the polluting components from the rock debris before their disposal and b. to start a recycling process of the valuable metals.

The value of Raman spectroscopy to undertake mineral and chemical characterisation of iron ores was assessed by applying the technique to representative samples of banded iron-formations (BIF) and a BIF-derived, martite-goethite ore. The common iron oxides haematite, magnetite and goethite as well as gangue minerals such as quartz and carbonates all show distinct Raman spectra that enables these phases to be easily detected and mapped in situ for either samples prepared as polished blocks or unprepared material. Raman spectroscopy also offers the potential of in situ chemical characterisation. Shifts in the excitation bands of carbonate detected in BIF were related to the Mg content of Fe-carbonate and confirmed the first world-wide occurrence of a high Mg-bearing siderite (pistomesite) in BIF.The discriminatory power of Raman spectroscopy coupled with the potential of the technique to offer large-scale (volumetric) characterisation of iron ore will be of great value not only to the existing BID and CID ore types, but also to the newly emerging magnetite iron deposits (MID).

By the end of 2022, the south-eastern Copper Belt region of the Democratic Republic of Congo was host to more than 40 small, medium, and relatively large sized copper solvent extraction sites. To date, solvent extraction reagents supplied in this region have never exceeded 50% of ketoxime content. We generated laboratory extraction and strip isotherms and used these with the BASF IsocalcTM modelling software to assess the benefit of using higher ketoxime blends on the main metallurgical performance indicators such as copper recovery and net transfer. Pure ketoxime extractants combine a relatively low strip point and a decent loading capacity, which are most effective as the pH of the pregnant leach solution gets closer to 2.

Work to date has shown that the use of Al2O3:SiO2 ratios is suitable for identifying potential gibbsite bearing samples. Subsequent confirmatory XRD analysis helps to refi ne this initial identification. Based on these methods, gibbsite has been mapped in two common settings:1. along steeply dipping faults, or2. in association with stratigraphic contacts where one unit is aluminous (eg dolerite dyke).On a microscale, the samples studied illustrate an association between haematite, and to a lesser extent goethite, and gibbsite. In these samples the dominant forms of haematite are discrete crystalline phases of either microplaty haematite or euhedral martite. Two dominant forms of gibbsite were observed:1. vein style gibbsite that cross-cuts (or infill’s cracks) in goethite ± martite iron oxide associations, or2. gibbsite intimately intergrown with and forming a matrix to microplaty haematite.Some of the gibbsite microstructures observed suggest that it may have formed during a very hydrous, possibly hypogene, stage of the deposit genesis. The presence of this crystalline gibbsite, and in particular its occasionally euhedral form, suggests that aluminium was at some stage remobilised, at least locally, and then precipitated from solution as gibbsite. These observations suggest that these has been a phase of gibbsite precipitation that may have had a close but complex relationship with regards to the timing of the mineralisation processes, rather than formation as a result of late stage lateritic weathering.

The City of Toronto’s Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. This paper describes progress on the project to date and reviews the risk mitigation measures utilized on the project to move the project forward through tough geological conditions during shaft excavation and tunneling phase of the project.

Our study investigated the influence of P2O5 and B2O3 on the viscosity and crystallization behavior of Ti-bearing blast furnace (Ti-BF) slags for the purpose of Ti extraction. The investigation of the crystallization behaviors were carried out using a single hot thermocouple technique (SHTT) and the viscosity was obtained by rotating cylinder method. For the viscosity, the results showed that P2O5 substantially increased the slag viscosity. P2O5 is a network-forming oxide, which increased the degree of polymerization of slags and accordingly increased the slag viscosity. However, both of slag viscosity and apparent activation energy for viscous flow remarkably decreased with B2O3 addition. As a typical network forming oxide, B2O3 was introduced into the network and existed dominantly as 2-D structure, BO3 triangular, which caused a simpler structure and a decreasing slag viscosity. As for the crystallization behaviors of Ti-BF slags, both P2O5 and B2O3 enhanced the crystallization trend of rod-shape rutile and suppressed the crystallization trend of dendrite CaTiO3. Therefore the added P2O5 and B2O3 caused the primary phase change from CaTiO3 to rutile. Additionally, it was found that the rod-shape rutile showed a 1-D growth, whereas the dendrite CaTiO3 showed a 3-D growth style.

This paper is to discuss the removal of non-metallic inclusions from molten steel using a high frequency magnetic field. In experiments, a certain amount of aluminum was added to the molten steel in a crucible to generate aluminum inclusions. A layer of aluminum clusters were observed close to the wall of the crucible after the electromagnetic (EM) field was imposed. Three dimensional EM field and fluid flow simulation were performed and showed that over 91% inclusions transported to the skin depth (2.31 mm) of the molten steel. The calculation of inclusion removal agreed well with the experimental observation. The separation mechanisms of inclusions from the molten steel by the high frequency EM field were discussed.

The corrosion resistance and corroded microstructure of MgO-C refractory in molten slag are investigated by immersion test in muffle furnace at 1600 °C . The microstructure and chemical compositions of the specimens after erosion experiment are characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The results confirm that the oxidation of graphite is the most important degradation mode of MgO-C refractory. The structure of the refractory material is damaged due to the decrease of graphite, as a result, the periclase substrate reacts with the molten slag directly. The corrosion process is controlled by the dissolution of the refractory materials into slag, low melting point oxides are therefore generated which lead to the damage of MgO-C refractory finally.

A vacuum silicon thermal reduction lithium process is developed in present work which used lithium hydroxide, alumina and calcium oxide as raw materials. The process contains two steps, which are that Li5AlO4 clinker is prepared in ambient environment, and that metal lithium is extracted from Li5AlO4 clinker with ferro-silicon alloy as reductant in vacuum. On the basis of thermodynamic analysis and investigative experiments, feasibility of this process is proved. The results show that Li5AlO4 can be generated by calcination lithium hydroxide and alumina, the burning loss is above 31% under the conditions of calicination temperature above 750℃ and time more than 90min. The main phases of calcination product are Li5AlO4 and CaO. When the calcination product is reduced by ferro-silicon alloy in vacuum, the lithium reduction ratio can be over 80% under the conditions of reduction temperature 1200℃ and reduction time 60min.

The use of an equivalent continuum for a rock mass is not always suitable for situations where the failure is structurally controlled by discontinuities as in the case of wedges in the tunnel roof. In these instances, discontinuum approaches are usually preferred. Rock joints that are filled with soft infill are likely to be the weakest planes in a rock mass, having a dominant influence on its overall shear behaviour. In this case, the joint material model adopted for the discontinuities should be able to describe important mechanisms, such as asperity sliding and shearing, post-peak behaviour, asperity deformation, and the effect of the soft infilling. The latest version of a soil-infilled joint model is discussed here. It describes more comprehensively than previous models the occurrence of dilation and compression with lateral displacements, and also represents the hardening mechanism related to asperity interference as observed in the laboratory that cannot be readily captured by the existing joint models. An analytical approach for the analysis of rock wedges structurally controlled by soil infilled joints is presented.The analytical approach presented in this paper for assessment of symmetric rock wedges in the roof of a tunnel demonstrates, that the peak shear strength of the joint may not be fully mobilised before detachment of the wedge. The analysis verifi ed that an overestimation of the factor of safety may be observed when an elastic-perfectly-plastic joint model was assumed, whereas the computed maximum factor of safety was considerably less when adopting an appropriate soil-infilled joint model.

The Readymix Group have a Quarry Improvement Program - 'Building in Quality (BIQ) which has many parallels to the ICI Explosives' total quality management - 'Quality Improvement Program' (QIP). Both companies have for some time recognised that the 'do it right first time' principle means less wasted effort and materials, that efficiency breeds profitability and so actively promote the quality culture. To install the principles and generate the culture requires considerable commitment and effort from the top down and invariably spreads to the suppliers and sub-contractors. Understanding the component processes involved with the quarry operation, analysis of those processes and gaining a breakdown of the cost of non conformance then allows the astute quarry operator to make the necessary changes to improve the process to realise profits. This paper outlines the steps in such a process and the profitable outcomes of the commitment to continuous improvement at the Nickol Bay Quarry.

THE cause of silicosis and its prevention have held the attention of medical men and mine operators for many years and at the present rime the study of this disease is more than ever to the fore, even though a considerable abatement in the incidence of silicosis has been noted of late. This abatement is due to individual and collective efforts. The Industry is keenly alive to the situation and much research is being carried on. Silica dust is assumed to be a contributing factor in the cause of silicosis. How it acts progressively in the early silicoric is nor fully understood. As the study advances, more effective measures of control may be evolved. At present the Industry has three known methods of reducing the incidence: 1. By thorough X-ray examination of all applicants, with special reference to chest conditions. Those who are considered to be susceptible to the disease are prevented from entering the industry. 2. Thorough ventilation of the mine. 3. Control of tuberculosis in mining centres and removal of miners when first symptoms of tuberculosis become apparent. In 1934, the Ontario Mining Association formed a Committee, known as the Technical Silicosis Research Committee, to study and supervise work on problems related to silicosis. This Committee obtained the full-rime services of a mining engineer to carry our research work at the mines in the Province of Ontario. The Ontario Mining Association has also provided funds for the purpose of carrying on research work along pathological and biological lines. This work is being done in the Department of Medical Research of the University of Toronto, in the Banting Institute, under the supervision of Sir Frederick Banting. The Silicosis Committee work in full cooperation with the doctors in the Banting Institute and provide material from the mines for the it use.
