The Stillwater Mining Company, a partnership of The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. and Manville Corporation, began commercial production of flotation concentrates from the western hemispheres' only primary platinum palladium deposit at Nye, Montana in March 1937. In the fall of 1987 an integrated pilot plant testing campaign of electric furnace smelling and oxygen? blown converting confirmed the feasibility of further upgrading to semi? refined matte or 'white metal". In the summer of 1990 the production smelter was brought on-line at Columbus, Montana. This paper describes the technology transfer from the pilot to the production smelter. Emphasis is placed on flowsheet development and the scale factors between the test and production furnaces and gas cleaning plants. The metallurgical results of the pilot plant and of the early months of production of the commercial works are also compared.

President Howe : It is not so clear to me that the facts which Dr. Waldo brings forward really argue that the nature of the combination between copper and aluminum differs from that of the combination between copper and zinc or copper and tin. As regards electric conductivity, I suppose that the fact, which he thinks points to a special intimate kind of union between aluminum and copper, is that the line in his Fig. 1 is neither straight nor uniformly curved, but that its curvature varies rapidly, not to say abruptly. But we find just such variation in like curves for the copper-zinc and copper-tin alloys. Thus, a slight addition of zinc or tin to copper causes a change in color wholly out of proportion to the quantity added; and, as we add zinc or tin to copper, the tenacity rises very greatly, only to fall off abruptly with further additions of either of these metals. DEEPEST hole in the earth, and deepest producing oil well in the world-such is well No. K.C.L. A-2, of the Continental. Oil Co., completed on April 12 in the San Joaquin valley about four miles west of Wasco, Calif. It penetrated the earth's crust to a depth of 15,004 ft.- almost three miles-a depth that exceeds by over 2200 ft. that of the previous record holder in western Texas. It is now producing oil from sands at a depth from 13,092 to 13,- 175 ft., which is about 1500 ft. deeper than the record formerly achieved in Louisiana. Continental's new well was bottomed in what is possibly Domengine-Avenal Eocene sand, and is producing from the Middle Miocene equivalent to the Rio Bravo sand.

Minerals are valuable resources and critical elements for a broad range of biological and technological applications, including technological developments to improve energy efficiency and the global movement to promote a low-carbon economy. However, in order to extract these critical metals, large amounts of waste and toxic chemicals are generated, as well as the use of high energy and large amounts of water consumption. Froth flotation is one of the most commonly used processes to separate and collect high-value minerals, but it still has some limitations, including low flotation efficiency performances using existing collectors and other reagents. Therefore, there is an urgent need to design and develop new metal-specific collectors to more efficiently separate and recover valuable minerals and to allow bulk water recovery from flocculated tailings. In this research, we propose to use our newly designed and synthesised novel collectors derived from a type of vitamin E (α-tocopherol), a relatively inexpensive and non-toxic natural molecule. As a potential collector-building block, α-tocopherol has a long hydrophobic carbon chain that facilitates the attachment to air bubbles during the froth flotation process. In addition, the phenol group of this molecule can be easily modified to incorporate various functional groups for targeting different types of minerals. Furthermore, α-tocopherol can be converted into a monomer for polymerisation by the reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) process, which can provide us with polymer based-collectors with high precision control of molecular weight and architecture. So far, small-scale qualitative experiments on α-tocopherol-based collectors have been performed with good results, which indicates the feasibility of these compounds as novel collectors for improved froth flotation processes.

In Colombia, more than 15 regions and around 100 municipalities develop gold mining at different scales, and these operations generate mining waste composed of processing fluids and crushed rock with metals and high silica content. Cement production requires clinker, gypsum and other corrective additives. Clinker results from the partial fusion of some minerals including silica. In this study is proposed to evaluate the effect of the use of mining tailings sands from gold mining in the manufacture of clinker. The proposed methodology will allow the characterization of the sands to manufacture a cement specimen and measure its physical and fire properties

The paper industry in the Pacific Northwest is a potentially large market for industrial clays. Current trends within the paper industry towards higher quality newsprint, filled and coated papers, offers an incentive for exploration in the region since the current supply of kaolin is mainly from Georgia in the southeastern U.S. Freight rates commonly exceed US$100 per tonne. The kaolin resources of the Pacific Northwest require expensive processing technologies to meet the industry specifications and it is doubtful that any large development of the local resources can be supported at the present time. Competition from high-quality regional resources of carbonates is another factor weighing against the development of local kaolin resources while there is a potential threat from shipments ofAsian and Brazilian kaolin in the early part of the 21st century.

The Vancouver Stock Exchange (VSE) has been providing venture capital for start-up companies since 1907. Ninety years' experience in the junior mining industry has enabled the VSE to develop policies and procedures tailored to the unique needs of start-up companies. Policies and procedures applicable to listed companies are documented in the Corporate Finance Services Department "Policy and Procedures Manual." Approximately 50% of the companies listed on the VSE are in the mineral exploration and development business. The largest number are exploring base metal, precious metal or diamond properties. A recent count shows that about 20 companies are exploring industrial mineral or non-metallic deposits. The minerals sought by these companies include limestone, decorative stone, building stone, lava rock, wollastonite, zeolite, garnet and graphite. There are two basic routes to obtaining VSE financing for an industrial mineral property. The owner can either sell an interest in the property to a listed company or form a company and have it listed on the VSE. In each instance, the listed company is responsible for raising funds to develop the property. A typical financing consists of the sale of company securities byway ofeitherprivate placement or prospectus offering.

At the beginning of the 20 century, British Columbia produced a wide variety of quality dimension stone products for both domestic and foreign markets. The industry flourished until the 1930s when most of the producing quarries closed as a result of the Depression. During the 1990s, British Columbia experienced the resurgent North American dimensional stone production trend. The industry benefited from increased prospecting activity and from substantial new investment in processing equipment, particularly in the granite sector. These activities resulted in new quarry developments, the reopening of abandoned quarries such as on Granite and Fox Islands <www.quadrastone.com>, and a renaissance in downstream value-added activities. British Columbia has reestablished itself as an important, reliable and innovative source of high-quality stone products.

In the irradiation of ore particles by microwave energy preferential absorption of this energy occurs in minerals having specific dielectric properties (Bradshaw, 1999). This leads to a selective heating of the various components of within the ore particle matrix. The result is a differential thermal expansion of such components and the resulting induced stresses become ideally concentrated at mineral grain boundaries (Kingman et al., 2000). Dependent upon the relative composition of absorbent, opaque and reflective components this may lead to enhancement of the inter-granular fracture of the ore particles in the initial comminution process (Fandrich et al., 1997). The potential is thus a greater proportion of free mineral grain within the fractured ore particle that may lead to improvement in subsequent mineral separation processes. As the composition of the ore dictates the result of such a treatment (Kingman et al., 2000) it is essential to evaluate the response of each ore sample on an individual basis. This paper reports on results obtained from two ore samples: the one being the zinc ore from the Black Mountain mine (South Africa) and the other a pre-concentrated sample of handpicked cobalt?copper mixed oxide ore from the Gecamines (DRC). The equipment and methods used to simulate the comminution of the samples and evaluate the level of the value liberation will be described along with the results obtained. Using King (1975), Kanellopoulous and Ball (1975), and Gungor and Atalay (1998), a comparison between the behaviour upon microwave irradiation of sulphide and mixed oxide ores leads to conclude that while the technique (i.e. microwave irradiation) is appropriate to the zinc sulphide ore, it does not seem to lead to exceptional results for the oxide.

In 1965 Africa maintained its position as a region of the world essential to advanced non-Communist nations for supply of vital metals and minerals. The position stemmed from the fact that Africa produced in large quantity a number of key minerals of which either or both resources and production capacity elsewhere did not approach the needs of the free world. The Republic of South Africa alone contributed more than three quarters of the gold mined in the entire non-Communist world besides an estimated 60 percent of metals of the platinum group and the entire new supply of amosite asbestos, and Africa as a whole was nearly the non-Communist world&apos;s only source of gem and industrial diamond. Africa also accounted for 83 percent of non-Communist world cobalt production. Besides these massive contributions, Africa in 1965 provided 50 percent or more of the new supply from non-Communist countries of the following mineral commodities: Lithium minerals, corundum, manganese ore: and chromite, and over 20 percent of new supply from non-Communist countries of columbium-tantalum concentrates, antimony, beryl, vanadium, phosphate rock, and copper. Africa also accounted for 18 percent of the non-Communist world&apos;s output of uranium, 14 percent of its tin, 11 percent of its lead, 9 percent of its zinc, and 8.9 percent of its crude oil output. With respect to chromite, at yearend Africa&apos;s reserves of the mineral were far larger than those of all other non-Communist regions combined. This probably also held true for manganese ore. In the case of crude oil, the fact that Africa&apos;s share of non-Communist world output was 1.6 percentage points greater than in 1964 was significant, particularly inasmuch as the output rate was continuing to increase at yearend.

With decreasing ore grades, the tailings of mining operations are becoming of increasing interest as metal-containing secondary raw materials. The objective of the current work was to investigate chloride leaching of gold, copper, cobalt, nickel, and zinc present in the flotation tailings. In the current study, the effect of cupric ion as an oxidant (0–50 g/L) and NaCl (150–250 g/L) on metals extraction was investigated. The other parameters, such as pH (1.8), temperature (95 °C), solid/liquid ratio (25%), oxygen feed rate (1200 mL/min), leaching time (24 h), and stirring rate (950 rpm), were kept constant. Gold dissolution rate was shown to increase with increase in cupric ion concentrations up to 50 g/L. Also, increase in NaCl concentration up to 250 g/L increased gold extraction. Majority of the copper present in the flotation tailings could be dissolved with all the all solutions investigated. The other base metals, cobalt, nickel, and zinc extractions were also shown to increase with increase in the cupric ion and sodium chloride concentration. However, even in the absence of cupric ion addition (t = 72 h, 250 g/L NaCl), the final extraction of Cu, Ni, Zn, Co, and Fe increased up to 98, 93, 83, 76, and 80%, respectively. This shows the power of inherently originating oxidants present in the tailings. Furthermore, the solid analysis of the leach residue indicated that leaching the flotation tailings in pure NaCl may result in partial gold dissolution. The results demonstrate that significant amount of metals present in the tailings could be extracted even with only NaCl as added chemical in the presence of oxygen feed, oxidizing agents originating directly from the raw material. This can provide an advantageous cyanide-free method for extraction of metals from very low-grade tailings with low chemical consumption.

Preliminary studies of bacterial attachment to MoSp (molybdenite) have indicated a low correlation between dislocation density in the (0001) basal plane and the density of attached microbes. In the present investigation, poly- crystalline thin sections of CuFeSp (chalcopyrite) have been ion-etched or carefully comminuted to electron transparency and observed in the transmission electron microscope. The thinned test sections were then immersed in a culture solution in which bacterial attachment occurred. The attached bacteria were biologically stained in a uranyl acetate solution and the entire thin CuFeSp sections or tiny particles containing thin, electron transparent edges with bacteria attached were observed in the transmission electron microscope, allowing the coincidence of bacteria and their density to be directly observed in relation to lattice dislocations and crystallographic orientations of the exposed surfaces. This technique has the advantage of exposing crystallographic orientations where dislocation lines intersect the free mineral surface, and the emergence sites of dislocations could in principle be directly investigated as a possible preferential attachment site for bacteria. Bacteria morphologies were also extensively observed in the scanning electron microscope. The implications of the results are that although a strong correlation between dislocation density and distribution and bacterial attachment, density, and distribution has not been established, systematic multiplication of dislocation densities in crystalline mineral particles to be leached could enhance leaching rates by increasing the reaction rates as well as the density of attached bacteria at crystalline, metal-rich phases. Techniques for dislocation production in mineral and ore bodies and the particular implications in chalcopyrite leaching are discussed in relation to in-situ leaching where comminution is attained by explosives and the generation of strong shock waves in an ore body. The present study demonstrates the use of microanalytical and microscopic techniques in the investigation of fundamental microstructural phenomena in hydrometallurgical processes.

"In flotation practice, a good recovery of minerals largely depends on the degree to which the valuable minerals have been liberated from the associated gangue during the grinding process. Therefore, a regular measurement of the degree of liberation can provide data for the assessment of the quality of separation and predicts the effect of changes in the grinding-classifying circuit on flotation process. Generally, the standard procedure for measuring the degree of liberation requires the preparation of polished sections - a time consuming operation that also has the disadvantage of providing an overestimated number of free particles because of the stereological nature of produced samples.The present work is an alternative approach to avoid these miscalculations and establish a system of control for fluorite flotation plants. The system deals no only with the state of liberation but also the dynamic behavior of individuals particles and mineral components within the grinding-classifying and flotation circuits. It involves methods such as sieving, x-ray diffraction analysis, study of polished sections and microscopic counting of preliminarily sieved minerals particles from a fluorite processing plant, randomly dispersed on a glass slide, but not embedded in a resin mounting medium. If a complete information on the textural properties of minerals in the ore (including its mineral components distribution) can be obtained through x-ray diffraction analysis and study of polished sections, the microscopic counting is used to determinate with enough accuracy the mineral liberation, estimate the grade of fluorite ore and products, determinate the deportment and approximate recovery of individuals particles and mineral components within the investigated circuit. For a count of 100-1000 particles in each n-size range, the counting method was found to be a particularly reliable and less time consuming operation that could substitute the chemical analysis of fluorite ore for an estimate of the grade:"

This paper identifies the challenges and opportunities for mining companies and communities in investing in human rights compatible, credible, effective and representative company-community relationships. &nbsp; The paper draws on the work of Professor John Ruggie, Special Representative to the United Nations Secretary General on Business and Human Rights, and his Protect, Respect and Remedy framework for business and human rights, The CDA Collaborative Learning Project, and the experience of Oxfam Australia. This paper begins with the premise that Australian companies commence operations offshore with high expectations and a willingness to work harmoniously with local communities. However, as companies increasingly engage in global operations - particularly in weak governance and conflict zones - the challenge to establish and sustain rights compatible, meaningful, corporate community relationships and grievances mechanisms becomes both more complex and necessary. Establishing trust and honouring commitments made to communities, including legacy issues, is a critical component in good corporate community relations. &nbsp; The second part of the paper will identify some of the impacts and challenges of mining that need to be addressed in corporate community negotiations and consultation. Respect for indigenous people&apos;s rights and their right to give or withhold consent for a project to proceed is increasingly evident, as is the growing global expectations with regard to revenue transparency. As such, key challenges include: grievance mechanisms; free prior and informed consent; transparency and accountability; the gender impact of mining; resettlement, compensation and benefit sharing; and security issues. &nbsp; Finally, the paper will provide practical guidance to companies on how to establish effective corporate community relationships. It will include examples, such as human rights impact assessments, gender impact assessments, and establishing local level grievance procedures. The paper will include an Oxfam Australia case study of a dialogue mechanism at Tintaya copper mine in Peru.

"This presentation will cover some crushing and grinding considerations in plant design and operation. There is nothing basically new in the subject matter presented here; however, the viewpoint and interpretation may be novel and some of it controversial.The presentation is based on experience gained in the metallurgical design of plants for Placer Development Limited from 1960 to the present. The plants are listed on SLIDE No. 1.These plants have conventional crushing, followed by rod mill and ball mill grinding. I would like to think that autogenous grinding plants are the answer for eliminating secondary crushing plants and reducing the capital and operating costs; however, the autogenous plants seem to have some problems of their own and I have had no experience with them.Fineness of Grinding RequiredFirst let us consider the fineness of grinding required.The fineness of grind will affect the recovery obtained, and the relationship must be determined. If the grinding is too coarse, some of the valuable mineral, either free or locked in middling grains, will not be floated. However, as grinding is probably the greatest single operating cost, we do not want to grind any finer than is justified economically.Finer grinding should not be carried beyond the point where the net smelter return for the increment saved becomes less than the added operating cost. Even this fineness will be beyond the economic limit because of the additional capital cost for the equipment needed to achieve it. These factors will be discussed in more detail later.The Bond work index is the commonest method of expressing a measure of the effort that has to be expended in grinding. It is the kilowatt-hours required to reduce a ton of rock from an infinite size to 80% passing 100 microns. The formula allows a calculation to be made for other size ranges."

B. C. Burgess-—Prior to hearing this paper presented at the San Francisco meeting, I travelled by car from Yuma, Ariz., across south-central California and up through the San Joaquin Valley. After hearing the paper I returned by the coast route to San Diego then along the Mexican border to Yuma. The striking feature of these trips, related to this paper, was the dry river and creek beds at a time of year not the dry season. Contrasted with this was the wasteful use of water in irrigation canals and laterals. Poland says "at least 90 pct of the ground water pumped is used for irrigation." That being the case, it would appear that first consideration should be given to conservation of this use. Probably a small part of this is actually reaching the plants. Some measure of this loss between pump and crops would be revealing. Methods that might be employed to reduce this loss are pipe lines and spraying of some crops such as the banana planters are using in Central America. "Preparation of activated carbon from the walnut shell by microwave assisted steam activation was studied. Influences of the three parameters, activation temperature, activation duration and steam flow rate on the adsorption capacity and yield of walnut shell activated carbon(WSAC) were investigated,optimization process was obtained by the Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The optimum preparation conditions were as follows: activation temperature of 980°C, activation duration of 41 min and steam flow rate of 1.66 ml/min. The optimum conditions resulted in an activation carbon with an iodine number of 1025 mg/g and a yield of 52.17%, while the BET surface area, total pore volume and average pore diameter of WSAC were 1328m2/g, 0.72ml/g and 2.2nm respectively. The study supported the potentiality of comprehensive utilization ofWalnut shell and the benefits of the microwave heating.IntroductionActivated carbons are one of the most important adsorbent materials in modern society because of its abundantly developed pore structure, strong adsorption ability, high surface area and thermo stability. They have extensive application in many industries fields which include gas purification [1], catalyst supports [2] and other pollutants [3]. However, in recent years, the industrial production of activated carbon is facing the problem of raw material scarcity and high cost, which limit to be widely used. Therefore, the selection of an appropriate precursor plays an important role and it has become hot sport to seek cheap raw material to lower preparation cost. As a kind of reproducible resource, the waste from agriculture and forestry is a high-grade raw material for preparing activated carbon due to is high carbon content, such as palm shell [4], rice hull [5], and coconut shell [6]. At present Walnut shell is widely accepted to be a renewable source of biomass. According to statistics, there is more than 1000,000 tonnes of walnut shells are produced in China annually [7]. As a good precursor for activated carbon production, Walnut shell is a major agricultural waste, to make better use of the cheap and abundant agricultural waste, it is proposed for activated carbon production."

Nowadays heap leaching has become established as a mineral processing technology for treatment of some low grade minerals such as copper, gold, and zinc, etc. Heap height, particle size, leach reagent consumption, and metal recovery are four important metallurgical parameters in a hydrometallurgical process like heap leaching. This paper investigated the effects of heap height and particle size on copper recovery as well as acid consumption. Three heap heights of 2, 4 and 6 meters and two particle size fractions of less than 25.4 mm and 50.8 mm were selected as variables in the experiments. The research results showed the inverse relation between heap height and copper recovery as well as acid consumption. Under given conditions, the copper recoveries of minus 25.4 mm ore are 78.63%, 66.27% and 52.88% higher than that of minus 50.8 mm samples for the heap heights of 2, 4, and 6 m, respectively.
