The torsion effusion method has been used to measure the vapor pressure of thallium over pure thallium in the temperature range 931" to 996'k The resulting 100 cal per g-atom is in excellent agreement with previous values. Vapor pressures of T1 above seven Ag-Tl alloys ranging from 33 to 90 at. pct T1 were measured at 979K. Calculated silver activities show a positive deviation from Raoult's law, approaching ideality near the liquidus. Measured thallium activities scatter less than previous measurements using the electromotive force technique. Values for the silver component were calculated by Gibbs-Duhem integration. This paper reports the results of a study of the liquid Ag-T1 system by the torsion effusion method. The method has been discussed in detail previously1 and will be only briefly summarized here. The sample is contained in a cell which is suspended on a torsion wire. Vapors effusing from orifices on opposite sides of the cell exert a torque on the wire. The torque is related to the vapor pressure by the following relation: where D is the torsion constant of the wire, 4 the angle of torque, fl and f2 the correction factors determined by Freeman and seamy2 to account for orifice length, a1 and a2 the areas of the orifices, and ql and q2 the distances of the orifices from the axis of rotation. By using the same cell for pure thallium and the alloy, it follows that: so that most systematic errors are eliminated in determining the activities. EXPERIMENTAL 99.999+ pct T1 was obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. and 99.999 pct Ag was obtained from Cominco American, Inc. Seven Ag-T1 alloys, ranging in composition from x^\ = 0.33 to 0.90, were prepared by melting together weighed amounts of the pure metals in sealed, evacuated Vycor tubes and quenching the melts in water. The apparatus and graphite cells were the same as those used by Hawkins and Hultgren3 in their study of the Pb-Sn system. RESULTS Ten measurements were made on pure thallium in the temperature range 931" to 996K, and the results are presented in Table I. Values of were calculated using tabulated Gibbs (free) energy functions.4 No dependence of on temperature or orifice size was found, indicating that equilibrium was attained. Data for the Ag-T1 alloys are shown in Table 11. Values were smoothed with respect to composition by a plot of where . DISCUSSION The value = 43,520 * 100 cal per g-atom for pure thallium (95 pct uncertainty limit) is in excellent agreement with previous investigations.4 In the Ag-T1 system, this study shows positive deviations from Raoult's law at all compositions. Fig. l gives the phase diagram according to Hansen, and Fig. 2 presents the activity values measured in this study as well as those from electromotive force measurements at 950°K by Terpilowski, Kundys, and slaby.'

One of the most urgent needs in the field of coal combustion is the ability to predict the performance of a coal from knowledge gained from small-scale tests. Numerous types of analyses and tests are conducted on coal, including the proximate and ultimate analyses, heating value, varieties of sulphur, ash analysis, ash fusion temperatures, free swelling index, petrographic analysis, and Gieseler. plasticity. The Illinois Geological Survey has made an intensive study of the value of these tests for judging the performance characteristics of the coal as actually utilized. To date, three reports1,2,3 have been issued, and another is being prepared. The present paper briefly summarizes some of the results found in the studies. Equipment The equipment used for the tests is described in some detail in the above mentioned publications. Briefly, it consisted of a domestic stoker, cast-iron boiler, and water-cooled heat exchanger, which were operated as a forced circulation hot-water system. The entire unit was mounted on scales. Instruments for recording the per- formance of the coal included a hot-water meter to indicate the quantity of water flowing through the boiler; a two-pen, mercury-actuated thermometer to record the temperatures of the water entering and leaving the boiler; a chemical-type meter to record the percentage of CO2 in the stack gases; a pressure gauge to record the static pressure in the stoker-air duct; and a multipoint potentiometer to record the temperatures in the stack and room, and the opacity of the stack gases. A 16 mm motion picture camera was available for taking pictures of either the fuel bed or the scale dial. Procedure The tests described in this report can be conveniently divided into three phases. For the first phase, a load of 5 or 6 tons of unwashed coal (usually screenings) was obtained from each of fourteen Illinois mines. These coals were all crushed and screened to a size of 35 in. (square hole) by 8 mesh. Combustion tests were made on a part of this raw, screened coal. Another portion was passed over a concentrating table to reduce the ash to what was considered to be commercially reasonable, and combustion tests were made on this upgraded coal. The ash content of the remaining coal was reduced to a still lower figure by passing it over the washing table with greater reject, or by standard float-sink procedure. This cleaned fraction was then tested in the stoker-boiler unit. Thus three coals with varying ash content were tested from each mine. For the second phase reported here, coals were obtained from four Arkansas mines and tested as received and after passing over the concentrating table with a normal reject. Deposits of high-silica kaolinite clays occur at many places in central Pennsylvania. These white clays were formed apparently by weathering of argillaceous quartzite and limestone. Their geology, distribution and use have been reported by Leighton.1 The larger deposits have been mined from time to time, and the clay, after washing to remove coarse sand, has found use as rubber filler, foundry clay, and in white cements. In general, the clay from these deposits contains too much grit (quartz) to be useful as paper filler, and the silica content is too high to make it useful as china clay for ceramic ware. Gravity methods for the separation of quartz from these clays have failed because of the extremely fine size of the quartz grains, but by the methods of froth flotation described in this paper these sandy kaolins can be made to yield a purified kaolinite that has a chemical composition close to that of good-grade Georgia kaolins, and is free enough from grit to be used as a paper filler. As by-products of the separation, a fine (— 325-mesh) sand assaying 95.5 per cent SiO2, and a very he (—3-micron) clay are produced. The possible ceramic uses of these products are being investigated at The Pennsylvania State College. Experimental Procedure The Sample.—The clay sample used in these tests was obtained from a small mine near Tyrone, Pa. It had already been washed to remove coarse sand, and represented the finished product of this small mine and washery. Microscopic examination showed that the clay was composed almost entirely of the minerals quartz and kaolinite, and that the quartz was present mostly in particles larger than one micron, while the kaolinite particles generally were less than 20 microns in size. The kaolinite and quartz particles were physically separable by blunging the clay in water with a suitable dispersant. Preparation of Flotation Feed.—By the addition of NaOH in an amount equal to 3 lb. per ton of solids, the clay was completely dispersed in water. Flotation feed was prepared by allowing a dispersed suspension (10 per cent solids) of the clay to stand for the period of time required for a 2.5-micron particle of quartz to settle from the top of the container to the bottom. After this settling period the suspension was decanted from the settled solids. The settled solids were redispersed in water and the separation was repeated once. The two fine fractions were then combined. Thus the clay was divided into a fine and a coarse fraction by size separation at approximately 2.5 microns.* The fine fractioh was found to have a considerably lower sand content than the raw clay (Table I), and was not treated further. The lattice parameters of zirconium and zirconium-oxygen solid solutions (hcp) were determined from measurements of back-reflection X-ray photograms obtained at 29°C using a symmetrical focussing camera. The following linear equations between parameters (c,a) in angstrom units (10-8 cm) and atom ratio (m) of oxygen to zirconium were obtained: c = 5.14764 + 0.2077m a =3.23168 + 0.1099m. The linear equations given are valid over the range 0 to 5 at. Pct 0. The accuracy of individual parameter measurements approaches the limiting accuracy determined by the spectral broadening of the incident characteristic radiation, and exceeds the accuracy of previously reported values. THE present work was undertaken in order to determine the lattice parameters of zirconium-oxygen solid solutions with an accuracy that allows quantitative determination of oxygen in zirconium. The results indicate that this is possible if very careful measurements are made, since the parameter change is only a few hundredths of a percent per at. pct 0.1, 2 In the present investigation the desired accuracy was achieved with large-grained samples using a back-reflection focussing camera and maintaining good temperature control during exposure. In addition a digital computer was used for calculation of the parameters by means of an analytical extrapolation.37 Suitable diffraction photograms were obtained from large-grained samples by using a modification of the technique described by Graf and Monteil.5 This consists of simultaneous rotation and oscillation of the specimen about two mutually perpendicular axes during exposure. Whereas, normally the upper limit of grain size is about 50 µ for useable diffraction photograms, this technique allows extending the upper limit of grain-size to exposure of a single crystal. EXPERIMENTAL Preparation of Alloys for X-ray Diffraction—Zir-conium, designated as hafnium-free, Westinghouse "Grade 1," was swaged from l/2-in.-diam crystal bar to 3/8-in.-diam rods. Substantially all of the hydrogen was removed from the zirconium by annealing at 1200°C in a high dynamic vacuum. The rods were then swaged to 0.2 in. diam without intermediate annealing, and 2 in. lengths were cut for alloying with oxygen. Samples for chemical analysis were taken from portions of the rods between each 2 in. length. Chemical analysis of the dehydroge-nated zirconium is given in Table I. Commercial tank oxygen (99.5 pct 0) was condensed in a liquid nitrogen-cooled trap, and part of the condensate was slowly reevaporated into 5-liter storage flasks. Nitrogen remained as a reactive impurity, and the calculated maximum increase in nitrogen content after a 5 at. pct 0 addition to zirconium was 50 ppm by weight. However, chemical analyses of several of the prepared alloys indicated that the maximum increase in nitrogen content was 10 ppm. The storage flasks, a Sieverts-type gas burette and manometer, and associated traps, pumps, and pressure gauges were connected through a glass high-vacuum manifold to comprise the gas addition system. The smelting of titaniferous ores for the past hundred years has not been successful because of thickening of the slags in the furnaces. The interest in the utilization of these iron bearing materials has been due to the extensive deposits which have been found in various parts of the world.1 The literature contains references2 to the use of titaniferous ores in blast furnaces. None of these attempts has met with success due to the lack of sufficient information as to the cause of failures and to economic considerations. Evaluation of the published information, as to the probable cause of failure in various attempts, has indicated that the presence of lower valence titanium oxide and formation of titanium carbide contributed to the failure. It was apparent that severe reducing conditions which are present in a blast furnace had been one of the factors for such failures. The previous smelting operations had as a primary objective the recovery of iron from these ores. Under these conditions the highest recovery of iron could only occur with severe reducing conditions. Application of Melting Point Data The application of the melting point data, from the system CaO-MgO-Al2O3-TiO2 reported in another paper,3 to the smelting of titaniferous ores required an extrapolation of these melting points due to the presence of other impurities from the ores. Likewise, a study of the effect of varying FeO and reduced titanium content of the slag was necessary before the data could be fully applied. The melting point data under oxidizing conditions had clearly indicated that a fluid slag with a melting point in the temperature range of 1370°C could be obtained. The smelting of a titaniferous ore had as a primary objective the production of a high titanium slag which was fluid and substantially free of iron and low in trivalent titanium. Since production of a high titanium slag was of primary importance, rather than the recovery of iron from these ores, the smelting concept could be altered to a marked degree. The ferrous oxide could be maintained at higher levels than is the normal practice in iron ores slags without being detrimental to the slags, although a loss in iron recovery resulted. During the reduction of the molten mixtures of ferrous iron and titanium, carbon acts as the reductant for changing the valence of the titanium and iron. The reaction can go further than in the case of the reduction which occurs in iron-titanium solutions. The formation of metallic iron removes iron from the system, so that the titanium oxide can be reduced to trivalent and divalent titanium oxides and also form titanium carbide which removes the titanium from the slags as a soluble constituent. The problem, therefore, resolves itself into maintaining the proper amount of ferrous iron in the slag thereby avoiding the formation of appreciable amounts of trivalent titanium and no divalent titanium oxide or titanium carbide. Australia is one of the world’s leading exporters of bulk commodities and the extensive use of sampling equipment is key to the successful management of each mining operation. At the process plant, without a full understanding of the feed, product and tails, it is impossible to fully optimise the performance of the plant, such that the metallurgical balance is often open to error. At the port, a statistically correct, bias free and compliant sampling system is crucial to ensuring exported minerals are reflective of their true value and to avoid penalties. Over the last decade, as a result of the iron ore boom, there has been high demand for reliable, representative and standard compliant solids sample systems in Australia. This paper reviews several solids sampling applications at Australian mine sites, the challenges and experience gained and how the implementation of reliable representative sampling systems has provided better understanding of plant process performance, improved plant control and overall benefits to the operations. INTRODUCTION Mining is the primary contributor to the Australian economy with Australia ranking in the top 4 in economic resources for 21 primary industrial minerals in 2016 (Britt, et al., 2017). Australia is one of the world leaders in the export of the majority of its commodities including gold, copper and iron ore (Britt, et al., 2017). Therefore, a suitable and standard compliant sampling system is essential for evaluating plant performance and content verification. At the mine and at the port, the larger iron ore miners in Australia have developed stockpile models to predict the grade of their ore down to individual blocks of the stockpile. This allows the miner to create the right blend of material for sale to their customers and ensures they are not underselling their product or at risk of penalties for impurities or low grade. As an example, the average difference between the benchmark 62% Fe and low grade 58% Fe fines at the time of this report averaged US $20/tonne according to the Metal Bulletin Iron Ore Index (Fastmarkets MB, 2019). At a shipload of 180kt this would be a variation of US $3.6M. Whilst this is an extreme example, it highlights the economic importance of producing the correct grade product and a recognised representative sample of said product.

Since the time this topic was originally treated in 1954, more recent French3,1 work has been published making it advisable to repeat the earlier oxygen solubility experiments, but using iron of a higher purity. Upon repeating oxygen saturation experiments with zone-refined iron, it was found that the oxygen solid solubility was at least an order of magnitude less than previously observed. SINCE the publication of an earlier paper1 (1954) on this subject by the present author, several contributions on this topic have appeared. Meijering2 in 1955 attempted to reconcile recent conflicting solubility data, without reaching any definite conclusion. sifferlen3 (1955) found that iron of high purity appeared to absorb a quantity of oxygen (0.005 to 0.025 pct) approximately proportional to the structural imperfections present, such as polygonization and grain boundary area. However, he also indicated that purity itself was a significant factor. He concluded that very pure iron nearly free of lattice imperfections would have essentially zero oxygen solubility. His second paper4 (1957) supported this contention since a zone-melted iron containing initially 0.0007 pct O analyzed only 0.0006 pct 0 after prolonged soaking at 850°C with an FeO layer on the surface. Because of the discrepancy between the results of Ref. 1 and those of Sifferlen, it seemed desirable to attempt to resolve this disagreement. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND MATERIALS The experimental method used by sifferlen3,1 was essentially the same as that of Ref. 1. In this technique thin iron strip with a surface layer of FeO is soaked for prolonged periods at an elevated temperature in order to saturate the iron with oxygen. After two days at temperatures near 800° to 900° C, one would expect that the iron would be in equilibrium with the surface FeO. In the work reported in Ref. 1 there was evidence that two days holding at 8000to 900°C was more than sufficiently long for saturation. Sifferlen used 48 hr at 850°C. Because of the evidence presented by Sifferlen that the apparent oxygen solubility is a function of iron purity, three grades of iron were used as indicated in Table 1. The Bureau of Standards wire was used only for resistivity tests, while the other two irons were used for saturation-analysis tests of the type described above.

Decarburized iron and Fe-3.28 pct Ni alloys were impact and tension tested in the temperature range of ambient to 4°K. It was found that alloying with nickel improves the fracture properties of the ferrite matrix. The improvement in toughness of iron alloyed with nickel is attributed to the effect of the nickel addition on the temperature and strain rate dependence of the yield stress as well as on slip behavior. The Fe-Ni alloy exhibits wavy slip when strained at temperatures down to at least 50°K. This behavior contrasts with that of the unalloyed iron where a change It is a generally accepted fact that of the common alloying elements of steel only nickel and manganese improve both the room-temperature yield strength and the notch impact properties. It has been argued for a number of years that manganese refines the ferrite grain size, the pearlite spacing, and the grain boundary carbides in medium- and low-carbon steels and thereby increases resistance to brittle fracture.''' This hypothesis recently was confirmed for a 0.04 pct C iron containing manganese, but at the same time from wavy to planar slip occurs at about 120°K. The observed lower temperature and strain rate dependence of the lower yield stress in the Fe-Ni alloy as compared to the unalloyed iron may be attributed to this difference in slip behavior. In contrast to suggestions published previously, transmission electron microscopy showed that the uniform dislocation distributions and the lack of dislocation tangles which are produced by low-temperature straining of bcc materials cannot be attributed to the absence of cross slip at these temperatures. no increase in notch toughness was observed in a decarburized Fe-Mn alloy.3 It thus appears that manganese only increases the toughness of Fe-Mn-C alloys by refining grain boundary carbides and has no toughening effect in carbon-free iron. On the other hand, the mechanism whereby nickel improves toughness has not been established. Hodge et a1.4 have clearly shown that a 3.28 pct Ni addition lowers the impact transition temperature of 0.02 pct C steel approximately 35°C when the grain size is maintained constant. Recently, Wullaert and Tetelman6 stated that nickel refined the grain boundary carbides of an Fe-C alloy and consequently increased the toughness. They also observed the previously reporteda-'

THIS paper has been prepared with the principal objective of recording the results of the Bureau of Mines exploration of five major clay deposits in the Western Region. It is based mainly on data contained in unpublished Bureau of Mines reports. Acknowledgment is made to the Federal Geological Survey for its cooperative work with the Bureau of Mines, to the various State geological and mining departments, and other State and local agencies. CLAY EXPLORATION BY THE BUREAU OF MINES Much has been written and published on clays and clay deposits relating to their refractory, ceramic, and other qualities but such literature is lacking in analyses of the available alumina content of the clays and provides little indication of their possibilities as a source of alumina. With this new objective in view, a great many of the known clay deposits were reexamined and new ones discovered. The Bureau of Mines made preliminary examination of numerous areas in the western United States. Five of those most favorably indicated were systematically drilled, and in each a large amount of high-alumina clay has been found. These five major projects are Molalla and Hobart Butte, in western Oregon; Cowlitz-Castle Rock, in southwestern Washington; Lone, in California; and the Olson-Troy area in Idaho (Fig. I). Preliminary scout drilling was done in the Stockton deposit at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; the Whiteware deposit near Lewistown, Mont.; and 13 areas in the Spokane or eastern Washington region, where the most favorably indicated area, known as the Excelsior, is now being drilled more systematically. Preliminary drilling was undertaken in numerous areas adjacent to the major deposits and others more remote. As a result, large additional clay possibilities were found. THE CLAY DEPOSITS The clay deposits under consideration are of the sedimentary or transported types, parts of which have been altered further by the agencies of weathering, ground water, or hydrothermal action. There are extensive deposits of residual clays in northern Idaho and in eastern Washington, but they have been found to be low in the available alumina and to contain much free quartz, mica, and unaltered feldspar. Although the use of dense suspensions for coal cleaning was pioneered in the United States with the Chance sand flotation process, and during the past year a pilot plant using a magnetite suspension has started operation in this country, the more recent developments in this field of coal cleaning have occurred principally in the Netherlands. During the thirties the Dutch developed the Barvoys process, in which a medium of barite and clay is employed, the Tromp process, which utilizes a magnetite suspension, and the Loess process, in which is used the air-borne earth or soil known as loess.1-3 All these processes are finding increasing use in European coal-cleaning practice. Now a fourth process, the cyclone cleaner, is under development by the Netherlands State Mines. A cyclone thickener for reclaiming and thickening the dense suspension is a novel feature of the Loess process. Through accident, the discovery was made that the cyclone could be utilized as a cleaning device for fine coal. When the cyclone thickener at the Maurits mine plugged, the overflow was found filled with clean coal free of refuse, and from this observation developed the concept of the cyclone as a coal cleaner. In June 1945 the cyclone cleaner was observed by one of the authors,' and in September 1945 it was described by Dries-sen6 in a paper presented in London before the Institute of Fuel. As the cyclone seemed to offer unusual promise as a means of extending heavy-medium cleaning to the finer sizes of coal that cannot readily be treated in existing heavy-medium processes, the Bureau of Mines, following Driessen's, presentation, launched an investigation of the cyclone as a coal cleaner. Added impetus was given to this study by the present increased interest in heavy-medium cleaning in this country. Object and Scope of Investigation Driessen's report, although comprehensive in many respects, did not include a detailed description of the cyclone cleaner, and contained almost no information on the influence of the various operating variables of the cyclone. It was necessary, therefore, to investigate the influence of the cyclone adjustments on its performance before studying the application of the cyclone to various coal-washing problems. The present report is confined entirely to these preliminary tests, designed to demonstrate the operating characteristics of the cyclone. The investigation has been in progress

Air has been cooled, heated, washed, humidified and dehumidified for many purposes and in many industries. At a number of metal mines air is conditioned to reduce the high humidity and unbearable heat found in deep workings, and at some mines air is washed to allay siliceous dust. Steam is introduced into the intake air at many coal mines, particularly in winter, for the purpose of keeping loose coal dust so moistened that the hazard of an explosion is lessened. This paper will describe a further successful application of air conditioning in a coal mine, where, for over three years, all intake air has been cooled to a constant temperature for the sole purpose of preventing roof falls. Effect of Warm Weather on Mine Roof It is generally known by mining men that some, if not all, coal mines have more trouble from bad roof during the warm summer months than in winter. Also, it has been observed that roof on intake airways is usually worse than on the return entries, after the air has circulated through the mine. Some mines and some coal seams are much more affected than others. In the Clinton district of Indiana, the No. IV coal seam has a good, firm, gray shale roof except during the summer months, when it deteriorates badly and falls in small slabs 1 to 6 in. thick. Timbering is not very efficacious during this period because in time the roof will shear around the supporting prop or crossbar and either dislodge the timber or leave it supporting only a few inches of crumbly shale (Fig. 1). This action is renewed each summer, choking airways with fallen slate, tearing down trolley wires, hampering haulage, endangering men and adding considerably to the deadwork cost. Only when mines have been worked for a period of years and have been advanced a long distance from the shaft do the active workings become comparatively free of this trouble, and even then the intake entries are still a source of much deadwork. Such was the annoying situation at the mine of the Saxton Coal Mining Co. operated in the No. IV coal just north of Terre Haute, Ind. The full importance of tailings disposal is yet to be realized by the mining industry, but our awareness of its present and future implications is growing faster, perhaps, than any single phase of ore processing. Few engineers can look very far into the future because of the complexity of the problems that may confront us if we project from the general indifference of past years through what we are already being expected to correct in existing operations, to confrontations with new statutes and an awakened public in any new plants hence- forth. The mistakes of the past have not been limited to the United States nor even to other countries of the Western Hemisphere. Indeed, all continents and subcontinents have suffered from myopia in releasing the tailings without retaining responsibility. However, the US as one of the world's great leaders in technology has a particularly unimpressive record. It may be safely generalized that the degree of control applied to the tailings of a milling operation has depended upon several factors more important than national boundaries. Thus in arid and semiarid climates no incentive was needed other than the scarcity of water to create a permanent and stable lodgment for mill tailings. On the other hand. where water has been plentiful. the temptation to let the tailings run into a river or lake or ocean (at least at certain times of the year) was often irresistible. So we find that modem tailings disposal in the southwest deserts of this country, with one or two notable exceptions where very serious breaks seem to occur at regular intervals, is satisfactory according to the standards of the 195QF and 1960s. while in various operations in Idaho, Michigan, western Colorado. Newfoundland, and elsewhere the record has been less praiseworthy. In the same way, cyanide plants which did not concern themselves about leakage, seepage, spillage, or wastage of tailings pulps with solutions containing toxic levels of free or combined cyanide soon heard a demand for better control. In consequence the industry has seen a growing use of cyanide regeneration of tailings or wash solutions, elimination of leakage, and careful structuring of tailing dams. The chemical and thermal qualities of tailing waters have occasionally been a spur to good tailings management. Some tailings disposal problems for example, the southeastern Florida phosphate clays and the Bayer red muds-have been given the intensive study they merited, but not always with much success.

The Anaconda Copper Mining Co. purchases 25,000 kw. of electric power for its mining operations at Butte, Mont. This power is delivered, over duplicate feeders, in the form of 60-cycle, 2400-volt, three-phase current, to five compressor plants, where most of the energy is used for driving air compressors. At the compressor plants are located the switching apparatus for controlling the 2400-volt power and distributing it to the various mines. At these points, also, there are a number of motor-generator sets for converting the alternating current to 275-volt direct current for the haulage systems. Pole lines convey the powcr from the compressor plants to outdoor transformer substations at most of the mines. When it is not economical to distribute the power at the lower voltages in the mines, transformers and motor-generator sets are placed at strategic points underground. All power is purchased on a maximum-demand basis; therefore there is installed at one of the compressor plants an eight-element totalizing graphic wattmeter. This instrument records simultaneously the value of all power taken at the numerous points of delivery, which not only climinates the diversity factor but permits load dispatching between compressor and pumping plants, and thus materially reduces the maximum demand from the power system. As most of the mine hoisting is done by 90-lb. compressed-air winding engines, the air-compressor equipment for the winding engines and mining operations is quite extensive. The standard air compressor has a rating of 7500 cu. ft. per min. of free air, and most of the compressors are directly connected to synchronous motors. The synchronous motors are designed for 80 per cent. loading power factor, thus facilitating power-factor correction of total mine load. Consequently by cooperation with the power company, the voltage of the power received at the compressor plants is constant. In the mines there are installed an induction motor load of approxi-mately 10,000 hp., and 4500 kv.-a,, in transformer capacity. It is the practice to install 2200-volt motors in the mincs, except those rated below 50 hp, hence there are in operation underground about 5000 hp., in the

The present paper records a chapter in the history of the development of an electrolytic manganese industry in the United States.l A relatively large pilot plant at Boulder City, Nev., for the production of electrolytic manganese was conceived as part of the national defense program to make this country independent of foreign importation of manganese ore. The first authorization, in November 1940, however, was for a plant of only several hundred pounds capacity. Improvements in process and subsequent additions to some sections authorized by subsequent appropriations have enabled the plant to produce as much as 2000 lb. of manganese a day for substantial periods of time. Since in pilot-plant operation frequent changes are made in the flowsheet, the electrolytic manganese plant was constructed so that equipment could be rearranged with a minimum of expense and time. Several different kinds of the various ¦ types of equipment were installed for many of the operations, so that the one most suitable for the process might be chosen. Pilot-plant operations were begun in November 1941 and have been continuous except for brief shutdowns for installation of new equipment. More than one-half million pounds of manganese have been produced. The improvements in process, selection of equipment, and operational procedure developed are recorded here. Development of the Process The work of early investigators on the electrolysis of manganese solutions has been reviewed by Shelton. Until the method of continuous production of manganese by electrolysis was perfected by SheltonZm4 and coworkers, no practical procedure had been devised. The method as originally developed by the Bureau of Mines will be described here only briefly. The manganese dioxide ore was reduced in a rotating kiln-type furnace at 650°C. in an atmosphere of "city" gas. The calcine was leached with spent electrolyte and enough sulphuric acid to produce a neutral leach solutioil containing 2 5 grams manganese per liter as manganese sulphate and zoo grams per liter of ammonium sulphate. Arsenic was removed from the solution by the addition of 0.0j gram iron per liter as ferrous sulphate followed by oxidation with manganese dioxide, and aeration, which precipitated the iron as ferric hydroxide. Amid the violent economic changes of recent years that have affected Canadian gold-mining operations so deeply, the discovery and early developments of Kirkland Lake might easily be overlooked. There was more than one "false dawn" for the district before developments finally established the fact of a superb mineralized zone extending through the present operating properties. Never far from the railway, Kirkland Lake has had the benefit of direct rail service for many years. The pioneer discovery on which the first mill and cyanide plant was erected was the "Tough-Oakes," this property being on what is now the eastern end of the producing area; some time later, the "Lake Shore" was discovered at the present center of the district, and a small plant was built upon it also. Both of these early treatment plants were of pre-war design. Progress in gold metallurgy has caused a gradual change in cyanide practice since the early days at Kirkland Lake, which may be observed in the various plants now operating there. From the beginning, it was recognized that Kirkland Lake ores were more responsive to cyanidation than to alternative recovery methods, and that their mineralization contained gold in very finely divided form. Although sulfides and tellurides are present, the quantity is small, being in the order of 1 or 2 per cent by weight, so that gravity concentration is undesirable, since gold is not confined to the sulfides. Some complication is offered by the presence of tellurides, which have caused lengthy controversy over their importance in recovery methods, but which are now generally regarded as less harmful in the light of increasingly high recoveries being obtained. Nevertheless, finely divided gold intimately associated with sulfides in the presence of tellurides; and occurring in the hard Kirkland Lake porphyry ore, substantially free from natural slime-forming constituents, indicates fine grinding. This has been the universal practice although the degree of grinding has varied a little among the different mills and is considerably finer now than formerly. The natural condition as outlined caused the establishment of fine grinding at an early stage in the development of Kirkland Lake, during the period of valuation of gold at, $20.67 per ounce. The first session was held in the rooms of the American Philosophical Society, on Tuesday evening, February 26th. The President, Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, called the meeting to order, and after a few introductory remarks concerning the importance of theoretical and speculative science, which often involves principles of the highest economic value, and, more than all that, serves to enlarge our conceptions of the universe, and ennoble us, by the cultivation which it affords to our most exalted faculties, proceeded to discuss some points in the chemistry of the atmosphere. It is known that there is in the crust of the earth a great amount of oxidized carbon, not only in the shape of coal, but also in the graphite or plunlbago of the crystalline rocks, in the various bituminous shales or pyroschists, which are found in all succeeding rock-formations, and also in the forms of bitumen and petroleum. All the analogies of nature lead us to conclude that these various carbonaceous substances have had an organic origin, and have been generated by the deoxidation of carbonic acid, a process effected by the growing plant, and attended with the liberation of oxygen. He showed that the carbon of a layer of coal covering the whole earth's surface to the thickness of one meter, would, in its production from carbonic dioxide, liberate an amount of oxygen equal to that now present in our atmosphere. But bituminous coal contains also a large amount of hydrogen, derived from the deoxidation of water, which implies the liberation of a farther portion of oxygen. The amount from this latter source would equal, for the various coals and asphalts, from one-eighth to one-fourth, and, for the petroleums, onehalf of that set free in the deoxidation of the carbon which these hydrocarbonaceous bodies contain. From what we know of the composition of the stratified rocks, it is probable that they include an amount of deoxidized carbon and hydrogen many times greater than that contained in a layer of coal one meter in thickness, and, consequently, that the disengaged oxygen in past ages must have far exceeded that now present in our atmosphere. This paper discusses the results of a technology-evaluation program to ascertain the feasibility of a piotornask-photoresist technology developed for fabrication of multiple-layer thin-film superconductive circuitry. The uehicle selected for this evaluation was a 120-bil associative data processor requiring a set of nine photomasks to define a similar number of patterned material layers of lead, tin, and polymer insulation. A total circuit area of 4 sq in. involved 2500 actitle and 12,000 passive crossings. Several short-free, electrically continuous specimens were satisfactorily completed under this program. Problems encountered in the preparation and use of the requi-ed set of Photomasks are discussed, as also are the problets of providing suitable external connections. A major retarding factor in the development of the superconducting thin-film cryotron technology for many years was the absence of batch fabrication means yielding necessary device density and count per substrate for practical applications. Early workers in the field desired only limited numbers of devices to permit careful study of discrete devices and representative circuitry integrating logic and memory capabilities. For these purposes mask stencils could be formed to selectively control the placement of materials, sequentially vapor-deposited in vacuum, to form the multilayer structure. In general a distinct pattern was required for each material layer; therefore, mechanical provisions were required to change not only the material source, but the patterning mask as well, before each deposition. All deposition steps were preferably performed in a single evacuation of the deposition chamber. Thus the means for storing, transporting, and registering masks and sources with respect to the substrate existed and were operated within the vacuum environment. In the authors' experience, the approach was and remains serviceable for preliminary device study, but was not extensible to an economical manufacturing method by virtue of the difficulties inherent in mask stencil preparation and use, and the capital investment implicit in the mechanization requirements. Since the commercial attraction of the cryotron technology stems principally from its potential for economical batch fabrication, the authors' program has placed major emphasis on fabrication methods.
