Barra Bonita reservoir, located in the Sao Paulo State, Brazil, has been mainly used for local navigation and electricity generation to supply a prosper region in the country. Sand mining activities in that area have an important social and economic meaning for the local community. In this reservoir there are several sand mines that produce around 45 000 m3 of sand a month. These deposits were rich in material used as concrete aggregate in the civil construction. However, nowadays a significant increase in the demand of gravel can be observed, representing a serious productive problem. This material hasnÆt been well accepted by the market and, through the years, it was disposed at open sky in piles as waste deposits. This deposits have caused environmental problems like visual impact, reduction of free spaces outside and inside the mine, source of material to erosion and sedimentation processes in lower areas, flooding as a result of the filling up process in the drainage system, among others. For a lack of an appropriate technological characterisation, this material have been mainly used to pavement internal and external areas in the mine, with lower cost associated. With the purpose of evaluate the usefulness of this material in the conventional concrete, there were conducted several tests in the disposed residue including petrographical, physical, and chemical characterisation. The petrographical analysis and the preliminary results of the study showed that the material reacts with the alkalis that are present in the conventional cement (CP-II-E-32). In order to make the application technical and economically possible a research was developed seeking forms to correct this characteristic by adding special cements with high pozzolana content. The results of the technological, physical and chemical characterisation of the products indicated the technical viability of the use of that material. The study also allowed projecting environmental improvements resulting in the elimination of the waste piles.

Mining activity has been an integral component in the New Zealand economy since the early days of European settlement. Recently in common with other Pacific Rim countries there has been a resurgence of investment in gold. A sustained and increasing exploration effort has resulted in the rapid development of alluvial gold mining operations, a number of hard rock gold discoveries, and a general optimism about New Zealand's prospectivity. New Zealand's attitude to mining development, in particular hard rock gold mining is influenced by high environmental values and a concern, largely through absence of examples, that modern mining may not perform to community standards. While these environmental concerns are wide spread there is a growing realisation that gold mining, if properly managed, can take place within acceptable environmental standards and that it has the potential to contribute significantly to New Zealand's economy. New mining developments have an important role to play in this process. The mining industry in New Zealand is now at a crossroads. Having invested substantially and confirmed the potential for gold mining developments it has found itself in a rapidly changing economic environment as the Labour Government puts in place a number of fundamental economic reforms. The reforms are intended to free up the economy removing the rafts of subsidies and protective measures which have stultified initiative and growth. A fundamental reform of the public service has been initiated including corporatisation of trading activities and the establishment of a Department of Conservation to administer estensive areas of Crown land. Both petroleum and mining taxation are being reviewed with the intention of creating a more neutral competitive environment. Mining legislation is also being re-examined with both efficiency and equity objectives. While the current environment is characterised by uncertainty and rapid change, the outcome will be a more market-oriented stable policy environment, to the mutual benefit of the industry itself and the New Zealand Community.

AT Bunker Hill the original charge storage and preparation system was installed in 1917 to accommodate lead-silver gravity mill products. Only minor tonnages of wet fines such as vanner and flotation concentrates were received. Charge flux and diluent requirements were .provided by an ample supply of siderite middlings and coarse lime-rock. While oversize material was crushed through ¼in., the use of roll crushers in series resulted in a more or less granular, free-running charge of adequate porosity. Under such conditions, receipts could be proportioned directly from receiving bins, and suitable blending was obtained by passing the resultant layered composite through a small Stedman disintegrator. This elementary system served well for production and smelting of an extremely lead-rich sinter, in the low column blast furnace. Here sinter physical quality is less critical, and appreciable quantities of raw flux and oxidized ore may be charged directly to the blast furnace without seriously impairing furnace capacity. Prior to 1938 the relative proportions of zinc receipts were low and extraneous flux requirements at a minimum. However, subsequent war-inflated zinc demands brought marked increase in fine concentrate and slimy zinc leach residue receipts and an abrupt introduction to smelting a more refractory zinciferous charge. The higher temperature demands of the more refractory zinciferous charge required a higher smelting column and the higher column, in turn, rendered the blast furnace less receptive to improperly prepared feed. Inadequate presinter processing facilities prevented the production of acceptable sinter, and blast furnace production declined to 50 pct of former capacity. In view of a prevailing contention among lead metallurgists as to the deleterious action of high zinc slag on blast furnace capacity, it was natural to overstress this factor and to concentrate on possible changes in furnace design. Another interpretation was that primary correction should be sought through expanded sintering facilities. Previous studies1 by the writer dealing with the embrittlement of copper have been concerned with the behavior of various pure and deoxidized coppers when exposed to an oxidation-reduction cycle, and the consequent evaluation of these materials on the basis of their resistance to this action. No attention was devoted to the variations in penetration of embrittlement with time, when these copper materials are exposed to a strong reducing gas, such as hydrogen, nor to the variations in oxygen penetration, with time and temperature, into the "pure" coppers. The cause of the embrittlement is the reduction of the oxygen in the copper by the hot reducing gas, so that a consideration of time, temperature, the occurrence of hydrogen and oxygen must be given. For the purpose of differentiating some of the involved factors, the present work may be divided into two separate series of experiments. The first of these deals with the oxidation of purified coppers under various conditions and then the subjection of these to a standard hydrogen treatment. The second series concerns the reduction, under different conditions, of tough-pitch coppers of several oxygen contents. The resulting data will give the rates of oxidation, and of reduction, for the materials involved. The first series of experiments will reveal how rapidly copper may become oxidized, while the second series will indicate how rapidly embrittlement will penetrate into an oxygen-containing copper when it is exposed to hydrogen at different temperatures. Materials For the purpose of determining these variables, three types of material were selected, to cover the extremes in the ranges of materials commercially obtainable. The first class of materials is represented by an oxygen-free copper, as well as the high-purity vacuum-melted copper2 used in previous work. The principle underlying the majority of magnetic intensity variometers is a comparison of the force to be measured with another force of known magnitude. The known force may be (a) of a magnetic nature, such as magnetic fields produced by magnets or coils, or (b) of a mechanical nature, such as (1) the elastic forces of wires, or (2) the force of gravity, such as employed in bifilar magnetometers and magnetic balances. In instruments of such type, usually a magnetic system is employed, free to move about either a horizontal or vertical axis, on some sort of a suspension. If the earth's magnetic field alone were present, such a system would adjust itself into the direction of the field or that of its components. Owing to the simultaneous action of the comparison force, however, the magnetic needle assumes a position that differs from the direction of the magnetic force; for all such instruments, the angle of deflection is given by tan = FIX, where F is the known and X the unknown earth magnetic force component. In other words, the magnetic system merely serves as an "indicator" for the position of balance of the two forces. Considering the matter from this point of view, it is not immediately obvious why the temperature of such a magnetic system should modify the results. In magnetic instruments, we may distinguish two different effects of temperature: (1) a magnetic effect and (2) a mechanical effect. The first is due to the fact that the magnetic moment of a magnet drops with an increase in temperature. This drop is characterized by the temperature coefficient of the magnetic moment (see equation 1). The second effect is due to the change in the torsion of suspension wires with temperature or to the expansion of lever arms of masses acting on magnetic balances.

INTRODUCTION This chapter summarizes characteristics of porphyry copper deposits within the Cordilleran orogen east of the Coast Range plutonic complex of the Yukon and British Columbia and south to the Columbia River plateau and the Idaho batholith. Porphyry copper deposits in this area reflect a geologic environment different from that found for mineralized intrusions elsewhere in the Cordilleran orogen, both to the south in the United States and Mexico and to the west in Alaska. A section on the Tertiary Cascade porphyry copper province is included herein. The Cascade province is considered separately because its deposits display a unique mineralogy and age of mineralization. That portion of the Cordilleran orogen described in this chapter is shown in Fig. 32, with the Cascades shown in Fig. 39 (see p. 114). The regional geology of this area has been described by Monger, et al. (1972), Hollister (1974), Wolfhard and Ney (1974), Field, et al. (1974), and Stacey (1974). Each offer slightly differing views on the post-Mississippian evolution of the geology in this porphyry copper province. The descriptive geology in this chapter has benefited from many discussions with J. E. Armstrong and J. W. H. Monger. Two separate petrologic models have been used popularly to categorize porphyry copper deposits in this area, a diorite and a quartz monzonite model. The diorite model, which involves a mineralized quartz-free pluton, has also been called the alkalic type (CZM Special Volume 15, 1976, and Soregaroli, 1975) and the syenite suite (Sutherland Brown, et al., 1971). The quartz monzonite model has also been named the calcalkalic type (CZM Special Volume 15, 1976) and includes mineralized quartz-bearing plutons compositionally ranging from quartz diorite to granite, with the igneous phase closest to ore in time and space commonly being quartz monzonite.

PREPARATION CONTROL IN UNDERGROUND MINING Selective Mining According to district Depending upon the particular geographic loca- tion or seam characteristics, modern raw coal preparation practices can be used to obtain improved product quality and uniformity. Nevertheless, certain coal markets may require only marginal quality while others may require very high quality, and these objectives may be sought by commencing the preparation of coal underground at the "working face." Under- ground preparation involves choosing those portions of the seam which can be cleaned to satisfy predetermined market requirements involving ( 1 ) maintenance of uniformity in chemical quality, (2) elimination of removable impurities, (3) control of sizes and size ratios, and (4) control of moisture. The methods employed to attain these objectives vary widely with the (1 ) seam under development, (2) mining equipment available, and (3) changing trends in the consuming markets. When a mining property is opened and development progresses from one section to another, the (1) petrography of the coal in the seam does not remain uniform, (2) character of roof and floor are subject to change, and (3) character and prevalence of mineral impurities are subject to considerable variation. The quality of coal shipped to market from any mine depends upon intelligent foresight, planning, execution, and supervision. Mining becomes a highly technical art. The quality of coal as determined by chemical and petrographic analysis is without question one of the most important considerations in the development and life of any coal-mining property. Variations in such proper- ties as volatile matter, ash, sulfur, Btu content, and petrography are of considerable interest, and to a limited extent so are such properties as phosphorous content, free swelling index, plasticity, hardness, pressure formation during coking, and ash composition. The maximum and minimum specifications of these characteristics as established by competitive market conditions place definite limits on the marketability of a coal.

THE practice of dentistry, particularly the construction of artificial dentures and "bridges," involves a unique and difficult application of the precious-metal alloys. Appliances used in the mouth are continuously exposed to corrosive agencies which can hardly be described as mild, and must remain free from tarnish and be substantially immune to corrosion. Limitations with respect to space and weight demand high physical properties, while complexity of form requires ease of working. The high corrosion resistance required necessitates the use of alloys of high precious metal content. The usual expedient of resorting to mechanical working to produce the requisite strength and stiffness cannot be utilized because of the frequency of annealing and soldering operations. To meet these difficult conditions manufacturers of dental goods were early led, unknowingly perhaps, to the production of precipitation-hardening or temperable alloys. The excellent properties of iridium-platinum may have suggested the addition of platinum metals to the conventional gold-silver-copper alloys to produce greater strength and hardness. It was found that such quarternary alloys retained their high physical properties after passing through the usual soldering process; i, e., heating to 7500 to 8000 C. and cooling naturally in the air. Later it was discovered that they could be softened and rendered more ductile by heating to the same temperature and quenching, in water. These early examples of precipitation hardening, for years the common knowledge, of dental practitioners and laboratory technicians, escaped the attention of the scientific world and discovery of the transformation which was responsible for this hardening was discovered by the Russian investigators of the system Au-Cu, Kurnakow, Schemtschushny and Zasedatelev,(1) § although the optimum conditions for securing good properties in aged alloys were not given attention.

Season cracking of brass has received wide attention and there is a wealth of technical literature on the subject. Its causes arc fairly well understood and means for its prevention are inexpensive and effective, so that the frequency of failures from this source has diminished of recent years. But its sister phenomenon, the failure of annealed brass by reason of applied tensile stress plus a certain type of corrosion, has received less attention, though it has been responsible for occasional more or less troublesome cases of cracking of brass in service. The work described in the following pages was undertaken about two years ago to determine the relative resistance of various commercial brass mixtures to stress-corrosion cracking, and to learn something of the controlling factors. By stress-corrosion cracking we mean the cracking of brass free from internal stresses by reason of applied tensile stress and simultaneous attack by certain corrosive agents. Rogers,' in discussing a paper by Hatfield and Thirkell, says: " He had also applied a solution of mercuric salt to tensile test pieces of brass whilst they were under stress in the testing machine. At very moderate stresses such test pieces cracked, and very readily broke." Moore, Beckinsale and Mallinson2 subjected test pieces to simultaneous corrosion and tensile stress. In order to determine the minimum stress detectable in brass by the mercurous nitrate test, tensile samples were placed under stress and treated with mercurous nitrate solution. They found that brass stressed below a minimum did not crack. Dr. McAdam3 has investigated the effect of corrosion on the fatigue limit of brasses, among other materials. He directed a stream of either fresh or salt water against the specimen while it was undergoing fatigue test. The corrosion-fatigue limits thus determined may be considerably lower than the endurance limit without coincident corrosion. The exact

The purpose of the investigation on which this paper is based is to determine whether the structural change which occurs in the slow cooling of steel below the transformation range has an important effect on its engineering properties. We recognize two distinct things which occur in steel when it is brought from above to below the transformation range, first, the transformation proper, that is, the breaking up of the austenite or solid solution of the cementite in the remainder of the iron, and the liberation of its components as undissolved cementite and as ferrite or alpha iron; and second, a structural change consisting in the gradual coalescence of the ferrite and cementite respectively into larger and larger separate masses. Let us distinguish these from each other by speaking of them as " the transformation " and " the structural change " respectively. If the cooling is at all rapid the unevenness of contraction induces severe stress; so that in a sense a slow cooling has a third influence, the prevention of such stress. This transformation from austenite to ferrite plus cementite can complete itself only below the transformation range; and, because this structural change is a change in the structural arrangement of the products of that transformation, it too can complete itself only at temperatures below that range, say below 725°; and of these temperatures it is only those between 600° and 725° that give the metal sufficient mobility to permit this structural rearrangement to progress with ally rapidity. The transformation is now known to be rapid, but the structural change is relatively slow. In 1917 Haighl presented evidence that under simultaneous corrosion and cyclic stress metals may fail at lower stresses than if the corrosion is prior to the cyclic stress. In 1926 the author, while investigating the cooling effect of water on the fatigue resistance of metals, found that under these conditions steel specimens fail at stresses far below the endurance limit.2 (By "endurance limit" is here meant the fatigue limit obtained with specimens as free as possible from stress concentration and corrosive influences.) This led to an investigation (at the Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md.) of the influence of cyclic stress on corrosion. This investigation may be divided into three parts. The first part was a general survey of the conditions necessary to cause complete failure under corrosion and cyclic stress of relatively high frequency. The entire process by which metals fail under these conditions was called LLcorrosion-fatigue." Corrosion-fatigue limits" for a large number of metals were determined and the relationships of these limits to chemical composition, heat treatment and physical properties were established. The conclusion was reached that corrosion-fatigue is due to the accelerating influence of cyclic stress on corrosion. Results of this part of the investigation were presented in five papers.*-= The second part of the investigation was a preliminary study of the influence of cyclic stress on corrosion. Each experiment was conducted in two stages. The first was a corrosion stage in which the specimen was corroded under cyclic stress; the second was a fatigue stage, in which the previously corroded specimen was tested (without further corrosion) to determine its fatigue limit. "Due to the European Directive 2000/53/EC on end-of-life-vehicles, from 2015 on more than 95% of car materials have to be recycled. In order to recycle the materials back into the economic cycle, it is necessary to produce products with high quality and purity.Plastic components in cars, which are coated with metals by vapour deposition or electroplating, have a wide circulation (e.g., as cladding panel or trim strip for interiors and exteriors). In the end-of-lifevehicle recycling process, these plastic-metal composites are not considered in usual technologies (car shredder) and are not separated from Automotive Shredder Residue. These parts can be separated by optical or HF-detection sorting and then introduced to a specific treatment.Experiments with a specially developed bioleaching configuration showed that the thin coatings, which consist mainly of copper, nickel and chromium, can be removed efficiently from the polymer base materials by a bioleaching solution with Acidothiobacillus ferrooxidans as a leaching agent. The solution used was produced in special fermenters with a 9K-nutrient salt media. During the bioleaching process at 35°C maximum temperature, most of the copper is dissolved and the other metals accumulate as metal sludge. The bacterial cultures based on A. ferrooxidans are robust and resilient.After a 48-hour bioleaching period while the composites were stirred regularly with ventilation, the plastic particles were completely free from metallic coatings. The metal components are separated for further use: undissolved components (mainly Ni and Cr) are separated by decantation of the solution; dissolved copper recovey is carried out by cementation of copper. The cementated solid contains ~98% Cu, along with small amounts of other metals.With the bioleaching process, good separation and re-utilization of the metallic coatings is possible. The cleaned plastic parts were prepared by compounding for new applications with injectionmoulding."

AN investigation of the behavior of inclusions in steel several years ago1 led to the conclusion that some of the commonly occurring inclusions in steel have appreciable solubilities, particularly in liquid steel. In the belief that further study and clarification of this matter was warranted, a laboratory study of oxides in liquid steel was started. These oxides are generally the result of deoxidation treatment, and the basis of an understanding of their behavior must be, therefore, the behavior of the deoxidizer in liquid iron. The Fe-Si-O system was selected for the first study, and the apparatus used and experiments conducted are described herein. APPARATUS The apparatus is shown in Fig. I and the system is shown by diagram in Fig. 2. Furnace Atmosphere Commercial hydrogen (1) passes through an orifice (2) into a manometric system that measures the tankside pressure (3) and the back pressure (4) in the system. A water trap (5) guards against excess tankside pressure. A by-pass with stopcocks (6 and 7) is provided, so that the hydrogen can be routed directly from the tank to the furnace if desired. When stopcock 7 is closed and stopcock 6 is open, the gas proceeds through the conditioning train, of which the first unit is a furnace (8) that contains platinized asbestos at 350°C. The temperature is measured by a thermocouple and potentiometer (9) and is controlled by a slidewire resistance (10). In [ ] this furnace free oxygen is converted to water vapor. The exiting gas passes over a water bath (11) kept slightly below boiling temperature by an auxiliary heating unit (12). This unit also heats a surrounding copper coil (13) containing water, and the heated water rises through a collar (14)

This paper is a study of the differential flotation of the sulphide minerals in the presence of salts of silver, lead and zinc. In practice, accidental activation due to these salts is more important than their use as reagents to replace copper sulphate. The general method of investigation has been based upon contact tests, the temperature of 35°C being chosen in conformity with earlier work. Potassium ethyl xanthate and potassium amyl xanthate were selected as collectors and pure sulphide minerals were used. The experimental procedure has been outlined in earlier papers and all solutions were kept carbonate-free.14 Contact, or spreading of an air bubble, at a mineral surface indicates the presence of an adsorbed collector film. Purity of Reagents The xanthates were purified in the usual manner.' Neither the cyanide nor the sodium hydroxide solutions contained sufficient carbonate to give a precipitate with barium chloride solution. The silver sulphate was prepared from pure silver nitrate by evaporation with concentrated sulphuric acid until there was no evidence of brown fumes, This solution was diluted and the difficultly soluble sulphate washed with water so that unchanged nitrate was dissolved. The resultant crystalline powder was pure white. The lead and zinc salts were prepared by dissolving especially pure lead and zinc in C.P. nitric and sulphuric acid solution and the crystals drained. The standard solutions were checked by titration. It was felt desirable to use the sulphate radical wherever possible, but since lead sulphate was insufficiently soluble for the purpose of the experiments, it was necessary to use some other lead salt. A.R. copper sulphate was used without further purification. Results The results are presented in the accompanying figures; the areas of noncontact (nonflotation) are shaded in Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 11; in the remainder they lie to the right of the curve. Zinc Sulphate The curves in Fig. I are to be compared with those for Fig. 2, for which zinc sulphate is absent. This comparison shows that the influence of the zinc ion is usually small. Its influence is more marked, however, for chalcopyrite in the absence of cyanide. The influence of zinc sulphate is also marked for copper-activated sphalerite, for which tests were made only in the "absence of cyanide. The results are of importance in the separation of pyrite from copper-activated sphalerite when zinc sulphate is added in the lead flotation section (p. 204 of ref. I). Sphalerite does not adsorb the collector (i.e., become floatable) under the conditions chosen.

A marked gravitational segregation of liquid has been observed to take place in a number of volumetric fields toward the later stages of their oil-producing periods. This phenomenon has been pronounced in thick, highly permeable sand formations such as those of the wilcox zone in Oklahoma City. This observation has prompted considerable research directed toward the semiquantitative determination of the equilibrium saturation distribution of oil vertically throughout a formation at final depletion. In this paper, data are also presented showing the transient distribution of liquid at different stages of the depletion period. Other experimental results show the effect of temperature on the drainage rates of water, Wilcox crude oil, and a close-cut heptane fraction. Intermittent drainage of liquid produced saturation gradients that might well be expected from the flow theories involved, Yields of the various liquids varied from 50 to 75 per cent of the original fluid content of the sand-packed (4 in. by 8 ft.) vertical tube. Introduction In certain volumetric Oil fields the performance of the reservoir during the latter part Of its producing life is governed to a large extent by the downward movement of liquid due to the force of gravity. This is especially true of formations having thick or tilting beds of uniformly high permeability, free of shale breaks. Laverett4 and Katz3 have presented original data and discussed the theory relating to the capillary and gravitational forces acting On liquids contained in a sand body. These investigators have pointed out the importance of such studies in the estimation of future reserves as well as the original fluid content of a reservoir. In this previous work, no data have been reported showing the history of saturation distributions during the drainage period. Since a knowledge Of these transients is helpful in obtaining crude Oil from such a reservoir, the authors have obtained these data during this investigation. Experimental Apparatus The drainage tests were carried out in two vertical tubes, 8 ft. high and consisting of 2-in. and 4-in. standard wrought-iron pipe, respectively. Each tube was equipped with a water jacket, which could be kept virtually isothermal ( ± 1.0ºF.). A diagrammatic sketch of the 4-in. tube and its auxiliaries is shown in Fig. 1. At 6 in. above the base of the tube, and at every foot above this point, core nipples were inserted through the water jacket. These nipples were closely fitted with steel-plug inserts during each drainage run. At the end of the run, these inserts were removed so that cores could be obtained from the sand-packed tube.

MeRcuRy is one of the strategic metals of which the supply has been raised from critical uncertainty to more than enough for essential demands. Work by the Bureau of Mines has contributed substantially to increased production of mercury in the United States and to consequent accumulation of Government stocks. Other contributing factors have been higher prices for mercury and Government loans to operators. The Bureau has undertaken 13 exploration projects, 10 of which have been completed. This work has comprised 28,376 ft. of several types of drilling and 23,798 lin. ft. of surface trenching, and has indicated commercial ore containing 34,800 flasks of mercury and marginal ore containing 26,200 flasks, a total of 61,000 flasks; equivalent, respectively, to domestic production for 8 months, 6 months, and 14 months. As Government stocks are now adequate, domestic production (currently at the rate of 50,000 flasks per year) is gradually being curtailed through Government control of labor and operating supplies. Introduction Mercury was one of the seven metals designated as strategic by the Army and Navy Munitions Board in 1939, when Congress appropriated funds for the investigation of domestic sources of supply of war minerals. The Bureau of Mines immediately started a limited search for strategic minerals, but the first mercury project was not begun until December 1940. The U. S. Geological Survey assisted in the search for cinnabar by contributing information on domestic mercury deposits, preparing maps, and making geological studies of exploration projects. The present high rate of production of mercury in the United States was encouraged by the increase in price to $196 per flask at New York (Fig. I) and Government loans to operators for mine development and plant construction. The Bureau of Mines has issued, for restricted distribution subject to wartime controls, 13 War Minerals Reports on individual mercury deposits (listed in appendix A). In March 1942 it also published a Progress Report of the Metallurgical Division, R. I. 3627, Cinnabar-reduction Plants of the Southwestern Arkansas Quicksilver District. Uses of Mercury Mercury and its compounds have more than 3000 uses. Its principal use is as a catalyst in the manufacture of gases for chemical warfare; the next largest is in pharmaceuticals. Mercury is essential also for: (I) certain electrical apparatus, (2) industrial control instruments at many war plants, (3) munitions, including blasting caps, (4) insecticides in agriculture, (5) antifouling paint for ship bottoms, (6) dental preparations, (7) general laboratory use, and (8) amalgamation of free-milling gold ores.

Solution by electric analogy of performance problems of reservoirs containing oil and gas has heretofore depended upon a process of successive approximations based on material-balance calculations, because of variation in fluid compressibility. By the addition or subtraction of electric condenser capacity, the analogy network can be adjusted automatically for changing compressibility due to evolution of gas in the reservoir. The addition of a condenser is accomplished by an electronic circuit, which is described; subtracting a condenser is done by merely opening the electrical circuit by means of a relay. Introduction V. Paschkis and H. D. Baker1 first developed in this country a method of applying the analogy of flow of electric current in noninductive circuits to solution of heat-flow problems and suggested its application for certain other problems, such as flow of fluids or mass transfer and chemical diffusion. Necessary details for applying the analogy to flow of fluids in porous media were developed by IV. A. Bruce;= he classified3 the types of analysis and predictions that can be made by the analogy in class I, when the reservoir contains oil but no gas for the period under consideration; in Class 2, when both oil and gas exist in the free state in the reservoir sometime during the period under consideration. Duplication of bottom-hole pressure history and predictions for class I reservoirs can be obtained directly by electric analogy. Until now, the solution of problems pertaining to reservoirs in class 2 was obtained by successive approximations along with material-balance calculations. The object of this paper is to present a method for simplifying the application of electric analogy to class 2 reservoirs, resulting in a solution of these problems as direct as is possible for class I reservoirs. This is accomplished by an electronic control circuit, which adjusts the analogy network for changing compressibilities of fluids contained in the reservoirs. Analogy Network In electrical phenomena the analogy to two-dimensional fluid flow in a porous media is that of current flow through an ideal conducting sheet. This sheet, perfectly insulated on both sides, has resistance and capacitance uniformly distributed throughout its area but is of negligible inductance. The need for having the surface boundaries perfectly insulated is that good correspondence may be had with a permeable fluid-conducting stratum bounded above and below by impermeable media. 111 actual application the ideal conducting sheet, which has distributed parameters, is replaced by a network having lumped values of resistance and capacitance—the resistances are series elements and the capacitances are shunt elements. The oxidation kinetics of ZrC was studied between 450" and 580°C in oxygen pressures from 6.5 x 10-to 1 atm using a ther mogravimetric apparatus and sized powder samples. Two parallel rate controlling processes were observed. A surface reaction occurring at the ZrC-ZrO2 phase boundary accounted for most of the oxidation and had an activation enthalpy of 46 kcal per mole. The other process, believed to be diffusion of oxygen into the ZrC lattice partially replacing carbon, had an activation enthalpy of 53 kcal per mole. The enthalpy for chemisorption of O2 on ZrC was determined to be —13 kcal per mole. Water vapor in the presence of oxygen accelerated the surface reaction rate. THERE has been little reporting of formal rate studies or attempts to ascertain the mechanism of oxidation of carbides. MacDonald and Ransley1 studied the oxidation of titanium carbide which has the same structure as zirconium carbide, fcc. They observed an initial increase in rate with increasing temperature followed by a rapid decrease through a rate minimum and a subsequent second increase at higher temperatures. The discontinuity in the rate rise was attributed to a phase change in the oxide which changed the rate determining step from the surface reaction at the carbide-oxide interface to diffusion through the oxide layer. Samsonov and Golybera 2 studied titanium carbide and reported that during the initial period of oxidation a dense film of Tic-TiO was formed followed by the formation of less adhering layers of higher oxides. The purpose of this investigation was to study the kinetics of oxidation of zirconium carbide and to attempt to gain some knowledge of the mechanism by which oxidation occurs. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Measurement of the weight gain associated with the oxidation of ZrC was used to determine oxidation rates. The principal experimental parameters were surface area, temperature, and oxygen pressure. Although moderately sized crystals of ZrC can be grown by the Van Arkel method, the only commercially available ZrC is a powder. In using powders, the surface area must be controlled either by fabricating the powder into a sintered pellet with a measurable surface area, relatively fixed during oxidation, or by using sized unconsolidated powder and applying appropriate geometric considerations to the shape of the grains to correct for their diminishing surface areas as they oxidize. I CANNOT agree with the results obtained by the committee. The gas obtained per pound of coal is too high in calorific value and the amount of gas is too large. It should require about 190 cu. ft. of oxygen per 1000 cu. ft. of gas and not 75.14 cu. ft. as is given on page 35 of the report, or about 2.5 as much. Calculating the calorific value per pound of coal from the coal analysis given on page 34, according to Dulong's formula, the gross and net calorific heat are about 12,890 and 12,430 B.t.u., respectively, which is about 18,600 and 17,900 B.t.u., respectively, per pound of carbon in the coal. This is an unusually high figure, as ordinary bituminous coal has less than 18,000 gross B.t.u. per pound of carbon. Assuming, however, that the calorific values calculated are correct, the following results are obtained. On page 35, the net calorific heat in the gas per pound of coal is given as 12,856 B.t.u. and calculation for the gross value shows it to be about 13,950; in other words, the gas contains (13,950 - 12,890) ÷ 12,890 = 8.2 per cent. more heat than the coal on a gross basis and (12,856 - 12,430) ÷ 12,430 = 3.4 per cent. more on a net basis. The calculated amount of carbon in this gas per pound of coal gasified is about 0.688 lb., or nearly the same as in the coal (0.6972) and the gross and net calorific heat per pound of carbon in the gas are 20,300 and 18,710 B.t.u. which are 9.1 and 4.5 per cent. more than for the carbon in the coal. These calculations show that the results given in the report cannot be correct. There must always be some heat losses in the gasification of coal, in radiation from the producer, and in sensible heat in the gas; there must be some loss of carbon in ashes and in soot, and there are always tarry vapors in the gases that are condensed and do not appear in the fixed gases. From the excessive heat in gas per pound of carbon contained therein, it can also be concluded that the percentage of hydrogen in the gas is too high, from which it follows that the moisture decomposed is too high and that more free oxygen must be used.
