During the past 15 years in this country there have been few additions to the literature of lead smelting. After the consolidation of the principal smelting companies at the beginning of this period it became the policy of the larger company not to permit the publication of details in regard to many of its metallurgical processes. This led to similar action on the part of some of its competitors. The result, of course, was a decided decrease in the number of papers written upon the practical side of the subject. Even upon the theoretical side the contributions have been few. It would seem that the industry as a whole has suffered from this general unwillingness to exchange information. While it is true that a given company is entitled to the reward that may come from its own development of a new process, it is also true that a still greater reward might be the result of a free exchange of ideas with other plants. This principle has been recognized for a long time in other metallurgical industries, notably those engaged in the smelting of iron and the manufacture of steel. It is pleasing to note that the leading lead-smelting company has very recently decided to modify its policy of secrecy, and to permit the publication of papers covering some details of its metallurgical methods. The statement has been made that there has been but little progress in lead smelting during the period just referred to. This impression is due in part, no doubt, to the scarcity of papers written on the subject. 'There has been, it is true, some discussion of the new sintering processes, but with little reference to detail, and to the effect that blast roasting has had upon the industry as a whole. In spite of the prevailing belief, it may be said that lead smelting, in common with other metallurgical industries, has made steady and substantial progress. It is the purpose of the present paper to discuss briefly some features of the industry as it is now conducted, with special reference to the blast-furnace practice in the larger silver-lead smelting plants of the United States and Mexico.

Fundamentally, slag control in acid open-hearth steelmaking cannot be considered from any different viewpoint than can that in basic open-hearth melting. The same laws of mass action and distribution apply in both cases, so that while most, if not all, of the recent intensive study of slag-metal reactions have been carried on in basic furnaces the principles evolved are nevertheless applicable to acid open-hearth steelmaking and it is therefore not our intention to discuss the various possible chemical reactions in the slag and between slag and metal. The points we have to carry in mind, in considering acid melting practice, are the differences in the type of steels produced and the difference in the chemistry of both the steel and the slag. The acid furnace is used to produce, let us not say "quality" steel, for, after all, a "quality" steel for one purpose is not a "quality" steel for another, but steels that require acid melting practice to be of proper "quality." Steels that are required to have high physical properties in tests taken transversely from forgings are peculiarly the product of acid furnaces. In this class may be placed various ordnance materials, notably gun forgings and projectiles and large commercial forgings requiring high transverse ductility. Forgings requiring an extremely hard surface, polished and free from imperfections, are also typical acid-steel products. Of course, such forgings can be made of basic open-hearth steel, but not with the same assurance of success. At the start, the preparation of the slag in the acid and basic furnaces differs. Lime is charged in the beginning of a basic heat to form a slag, but in the acid furnace nothing is added for the special purpose of producing a slag when the heat is melted down. The result is that the acid furnace has much less volume of slag than the basic. The slag formed upon melting down is made up almost entirely of the oxides of elements contained in the metallic charge, notably oxides of iron, manganese and silicon, the amount of silica being augmented somewhat by erosion of the furnace lining. A typical acid open-hearth slag, when the bath is completely melted, will have an analysis about as follows: CaO, 3.40 per cent; SiO2, 51.9; Fe2O3, 1.25 ; FeO, 28.86; Al2o3, 1.82; MnO, 12.22. The high iron oxide content of the slag gives it a black appearance. "Lead-zinc mineralization is distributed in Egypt along the Red Sea coast between El Qusier and Ras Banas. A representative sample from Um Gheig was collected and ground to -60 mesh for the mineralogical study. It contains hemimorphite (Zn2SiO4.H2O), sphalerite (ZnS), galena (PbS), calcite (CaCO3) and dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2) beside the gangue minerals gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) and hematite (Fe2O3). Cadmium seems to be incorporated in the crystal structure of the zinc-lead minerals. The chemical analysis of Um-Gheig representative sample revealed that, it contains 16% zinc combined with 0.1% cadmium, 2.3% lead and 0.1% boron beside other elements.Pug and agitation leaching were performed on samples ground to -200 mesh to achieve the maximum dissolution efficiency of cadmium with respect to other elements. Cadmium leaching efficiency reached 90% by using 40% H2SO4 at S/L ratio 1/2 and stirring time 2 hours at 80o C. Cadmium was then separated as yellow precipitate of CdS from the sulfate leach liquor containing 0.9 g/l Cd, 145 g/l Zn, 0.15 g/l B and 0.01 g/l Pb. Separation of cadmium was carried out by direct precipitation using Na2S as well as H2S. The recovery of 94% cadmium free of zinc was achieved.IntroductionLead-zinc ores occur in Egypt in a few localities distributed along the Red Sea coast between El Qusier and Ras Banas. Um-Gheig Pb-Zn ore is a replacement deposit in limestone and calcareous sandstone in the basal series of the Middle Miocene rocks. The reserve of the ore deposits has been estimated by Soviet and German Experts to be about 900,000 Ton, Bishai [1]. As has been mentioned, zinc is a common element and cadmium is comparatively rare in almost zinc minerals. It was estimated that zinc is 200 times as abundant as cadmium. According to Bodas [2] about 2.1% of cadmium was carried by the Zn mineral hemimorphite (15.3% Zn) in Thailand. Also, Onal et al., [3] found that 164 g/t Cd was carried by Pb–Zn ore sample containing 10.17% Pb and 10.98% Zn from Aladag in Turkey. Cadmium metal has gained great importance due to its wide applications in civil and navy purposes as well as in nuclear field. It is characterized by its ability to absorb thermal neutrons during the chain reaction inside the nuclear reactors. It is also used in the manufacture of sheets which directed the chain reactions [4]."

IN general in making such powders, all kinds of gravel, tuff, washed river silt, and similar earths whose grain is fine and lean by nature are good for this operation of casting, either by themselves or in mixture because they are disposed to receive the metals well on account of a certain dryness which they possess. Many kinds are also compounded by means of art. Of these, I shall proceed to tell of all those that experience [119] has taught me to recognize as good. But first I desire that we return to speak of the natural ones because they are real earths and can always be had wherever one may be, and in the necessary quantity. They please me greatly because they are easy to reduce on account of their disposition. A loam is made from these and mixed by beating with wool-cloth cut- tings, spent wash ashes, and horse dung. This is made into cakes and dried. These are then put to bake in a furnace or in some other way and, in fact, are baked very well. Then it is pounded and sifted with a fine sieve, or it is ground in a potter's color mill, or by hand on a porphyry with water, to the fineness that the craftsman desires, or as fine as he can make it. When it has been ground it is again drained free from water and dried out with fire. Then as much magistery of salt is taken as will moisten it. It is dried and pounded again and passed through a sieve. When it has been made as desired in this way it is moistened again before use with water, urine, or vinegar just enough so that it holds together when it is squeezed in the fist. Then, when it has been brought to this point, it is moulded as you will hear. Powders are also made of crushed brick, tripoli, vine ashes, tiles, and glazed drainpipes, or burned emery, calcined tin, straw, and of burned paper and horse dung as well as of young ram's-horn ashes and many other things. The goodness of all these depends on three things; namely, on receiving the metal well, on being so fine as to be almost impalpable, and on their being made .with a magistery that renders them hard and strong when they are dry. L. J. Dijkstra and R. Sladek, (Ontario Research Foundation, Toronto, and Institute for the Study of Metals, Chicago, respectively)—This interesting paper confirms some results obtained some years ago in collaboration with Fast: namely the broadening of the nitrogen peak by the presence of small amounts of manganese. Later on a more extensive study of this effect was made at the Institute for the Study of Metals at Chicago. As the work has not yet been submitted for publication we wish to mention here briefly some of the results. The effect of about 0.5 atomic pct manganese, chromium, molybdenum, or vanadium on the nitrogen-peak in iron was examined. The broadening found previously in the case of manganese was even found to be more pronounced for chromium. In the case of molybdenum and vanadium a double peak was observed which seemed to justify the idea that in all cases mainly two relaxation times were involved: namely, the normal relaxation time as found in pure iron and a second relaxation time related to the existence of abnormal interstitial lattice sites introduced by the foreign metallic element. The analysis showed that for the normal nitrogen-peak as a reference at 22°C the abnormal peak was found at about 32°, 47°, 75°, and 87°C in the case of manganese, chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium, respestively. In the manganese alloy the free energy difference for a nitrogen-atom at an abnormal and a normal lattice site was estimated at 2800 cal per mol. This means that for temperatures above 100°C the solid solubility and overall diffusion rate of nitrogen is not much affected by additions of 0.5 pct Mn. We believe that the difference in rate of precipitation of nitrogen in pure iron and the manganese alloy is mainly a question of the number of potential nuclei available in the different steels. In studying the effect of these alloying elements on precipitation of nitrogen, a distinction must be made between the para reaction and ortho reaction, using terminology introduced by Hultgren.7 The ortho reaction in which the alloying metallic element participates in the diffusion under formation of nitrides occurs at high temperatures such as 600°C. The para reaction in which the alloying metallic element does not diffuse and in which the nitride inherits its alloy content from the matrix occurs at lower temperatures. To prevent the ortho reaction the alloys have to be quenched rapidly from the phase. It is not surprising that the authors find that the height of the peak indicates a lower nitrogen content than chemical analysis. In the first place the peak is not a single relaxation peak and secondly, the steels were not quenched from the phase after the nitrogen was introduced at 580 °C.

"Reflector button signs similar to those used to attract the attention of motorists on the public highways at night are now being used to good advantage by a few mining companies in underground workings for danger, warning, direction, and safety signs and signals. Most safety signs and signals used in underground mining are of the electric light painted-board, or enameled or porcelain metal-plate,type, all of which have good features as well as some disadvantages; among the disadvantages are: The filament of electric incandescent lamps is prone to ""burn out"" occasionally anti usually the lamps are not replaced promptly; painted-board and enameled or porcelain metal-plate signs can be seen only a short distance and often are ""passed up"" unintentionally by employees, consequently these signs do not always serve the purposes intended and may be the cause of injury or death through failure to warn the men of danger.The advantage of using reflector button signs in mines or underground workings is that the cap lamps or headlights with which employees and locomotives generally are equipped, if directed at these buttons will reflect the light back to its source, and if they are arranged to spell words of warning or direction, or if suitable symbols are used, they are discernible and can be read at a distance of several hundred feet. The distance the light is reflected depends largely on the color of the buttons used. The reflector buttons also in many instances can be used to good advantage in conjunction with other methods previously mentioned.Several types of reflector buttons are available, among them the flat-lens type with mirrored metallic foil or plate back, the facet-cut-lens type with a mirrored metallic foil or plate back, and a type with a hemispherical smooth lens with a parabolic mirrored metal back. Lenses for the different types are available in several colors. Crystal, amber, red, and green are the colors of the buttons used to the greatest extent in underground signs up to the present time. These buttons may be had in different sizes, also.It has been observed that crystal-colored buttons reflect light the greatest distance (about 1,000 feet) and red-colored buttons the least (about 500 feet); reflection from green and amber colors ranges somewhere between the red and crystal colors in distance.Reflector buttons for underground use should be designed to reflect light a maximum distance; they should be made of materials that resist oxidation and corrosion, especially of the mirrored backs, and should be relatively free of protruding parts or projections that will collect dust.Reflector buttons approximately 3/14 inch in diameter seem best suited for underground use in general because fewer reflector units are required for a signal of given size."

SINCE I have mentioned the art of alchemy in. many parts of this treatise of mine, especially when 'came to the description of the practice of various operations,* I do not here intend to argue as to whether it may be called true or not. But in case it is true, inasmuch as it is seen in operation to be a result dependent on the actions and virtues of fires, I should not pass by in silence without speaking at all of this art here, nor would I wish to do so, especially since I think that you do not really know what it is except in so far as common report is heard everywhere to the effect that whoever carries it to completion makes silver and gold with it. Because of this belief, many seek it with much time, labor, and expense, as I know you have often heard related, if not elsewhere, by me in the chapter on gold that I have written in this volume. Now do not think that I wish to teach you this art here, for I am one of those who do not know it. Therefore I shall tell you here, so that you may know more, only. that those workers who so eagerly follow after and seek it proceed by just two pathways. One is that which takes its enlightenment from the words of the wise philosophers, by means of which they think to attain it. This they call the just, holy, and good way, and they, say that in this they are but imitators and assistants of Nature, indeed, manipulators and true physicians-of .mineral bodies, purging them of superfluities and assisting them by augmenting their virtue and freeing them from their defects. In this way they sometimes proceed to corrupt these bodies in order to be able to separate the elements they contain so as to reduce them, if possible, to their primary materials, as they call them, or sometimes they convert them into new substances by means of this art or by adding another spirit different from the first one. Thus they seek in this way to bring these materials to a certain point of corruption or to a separation of elements, or to remove or add spirits to things, or to make coarse materials subtle and sometimes to make subtle materials coarse. Therefore, as you can understand, these persons, with bridle broken, run a circular track night and day, without ever having rest; and surely I do not know whether anyone has ever arrived at the desired goal. LESTER GUTTMAN* The question of whether classical thermodynamics alone imposes any lower limit to solid solubilities was raised during a discussion among various members of the Institute for the Study of Metals. Although our conclusions are not new,1 they may be worth reiterating, since confusion on this subject seems to persist. In a binary system (A,B), the conditions for equilibrium, at constant pressure and temperature, between a solid solution and a liquid solution are µAs = µAl [la] µBs = µbl [lb] Here µ denotes the chemical potential either of component A or B, as shown by the subscripts, and the superscripts s and l refer to the solid and liquid solutions, respectively. These two conditions are just sufficient to determine the compositions of both phases. Suppose, however, that the solid phase is found experimentally not to contain any of component B; then we cannot evaluate µbs, which is defined by Here nAs and nBs are the number of mols of A and B, respectively, in the solid, whose free energy is Fs. Eq lb cannot be used, but it is no longer needed: we stated at the outset that the solid has the composition "pure A," and only the liquid composition need now be determined, from Eq la. All the equilibrium properties of the system can be derived from Eq la rigorously and simply. Hence there is no purely thermodynamic reason to exclude phase diagrams which show precisely zero solid solubility. Marsh2 has objected to such diagrams as implying that even the transformation of pure A begins at the eutectic temperature. In any case, the user of the diagram must have a certain minimum knowledge of how to interpret it, and it would seem simpler to remember the general rule that eutectic temperatures have no significance for pure components, rather than to show, say, by broken lines, on a scale which will often be exaggerated, a hypothetical solid-solubility about which we know only that it is less than a certain amount. The case of an intermetallic compound in equilibrium with a binary liquid solution does not require a separate treatment since nothing in the foregoing was dependent on the nature of the components. Therefore, thermodynamics alone does not exclude the possibility that (intermetallic) compounds may exist with compositions always precisely those given by their chemical formulas. With the aid of extra-thermodynamic methods, one may conclude that the solubility of one solid in another is never exactly zero. On the other hand, one would generally expect that the solubility will be small unless the components resemble one another (as do the metals), or form weakly-bound crystals. Therefore, it is useful to know that when there is no direct evidence for solid-solubility, one may neglect it without violating thermodynamic principles.

"Cycled fluidized bed ash (CFBA), a significant portion of fly ash produced from coal-fired power plants and rejected from the ash classifying process, has remained unused due to its high free CaO and S03 content. It is necessary to extend research on the method to reduce the expansion and improve the compressive strength by some effective chemical activator. This paper presents experimental results on the expansion by Le chaterlier tester and the compressive strength. Hydraulic ash-zeolite (HAZ) cementitious material was blended as the chemical activator to study the effects of the activator on the expansion and the compressive strength. The results show that HAZ can not only reduce the expansion, but also increase the prisms compressive strength. Scanning electron microscope observation and X-ray diffraction analysis indicate that the main hydrated products of the sample are calcium hydroxide, ettringite, zeolite and calcite, which can explain the results of the expansion and the strength tests.IntroductionNearly 80% of the electricity in China is produced by coal-fired plants, which results in the production of a large quantity of coal combustion residues, among which coal fly ash is the major component. Because of that the air-pollution becomes heavier as time going on. Cycle-fluidized-bed-combustion systems are retrofitted to meet air-emission standards mandated by China Clean Air Act. Cycle fluidized bed ash (CFBA) will present new challenges for coal-combustion byproduct management. The use of cycle-fluidized-bed ash as a cement replacement in concrete is the most attractive one because of its high volume utilization and widespread construction. However, the replacement of cement with cycle fluidized bed ash in Portland cement concrete usually increases the expansion and decreases the early strength of concrete. In many research of this field, most of them were focus on the activation of pozzolanic activity of CFBA and to make all kinds of blend cement. A number of studies had been carried out on the activation of CFBA using chemical activators. These studies involved using different activating methods including alkali activation and sulfate activation 11, 2]. The former involved the breaking down of the glass phases in an elevated alkaline environment to accelerate the reaction [3, 4]. The later is based on the ability of sulfates to react with aluminum oxide in the glass phase of CFBA to produce ettringite that contributes to the strength at early ages [5-7]. With respect to sulfate activation, the use of gypsum and sodium sulfate had been well studied [5-8]. HAZ is one of HAS sub-products which is a patentd chemical activator made by Wuhan University (ZL98113594.3). It had been used to activate CFBA to produce blend cement in many Chinese engineering projects and time has told us that it is a good activator."

PREVIOUS workersl'% ave found that as-quenched ferrous martensites can be plastically deformed at low stresses. They have also found that the stress to obtain small strains can be significantly increased by aging at temperatures up to 150°C. This behavior has been interpreted in two ways: 1) that the deformation at low applied stress is due to internal stresses and thus the aging phenomenon is due to relaxation of the internal stresses;' 2) that the microdeformation arises through the motion of unpinned dislocations and the aging process is the diffusion of carbon to the dislocations to pin them.293 In a recent paper,4 we have shown that under certain conditions the dominant microdeformation mechanism of as-quenched Fe-31Ni marten-site-austenite aggregates is the transformation of retained austenite. Our results on resistance changes during deformation and temperature dependence of the deformation also established that, at temperatures above 300° K, the microdeformation was not due to this transformation. The purpose of this note is to report results of experiments which indicate that explanation 1 is appropriate for this deformation. All results presented here are from conditions where transformation does not make a measurable contribution to the microplastic deformation, in Fe-31Ni-0.002C, or in Fe-29Ni-0.02C-0.25Ti. The experimental techniques that were used for measurement of the plastic deformation are described4 and analyzed5 elsewhere. Fig. 1 shows the microplastic response of 100 pct austenite at 300" and 350° K. The microplastic response of an austenite-martensite aggregate is also given in Fig. 1 and it is seen that, after formation of martensite, the initial plastic deformation occurs at lower stresses. Thus, the softness is not entirely due to retained austenite—the quenched structure can be deformed at lower stresses despite the fact that the macroscopic strength is significantly higher. A result which allows a distinction to be drawn between the alternative explanations for this behavior is derived from aging experiments on the low-carbon alloy containing titanium. We have previously shown4 that the presence of titanium in this alloy reduced the free carbon to a sufficiently low level that thermal stabilization of the austenite-martensite transformation was not detected. Despite this, Fig. 2 shows that the microplastic response is decreased by aging treatments. A similar aging effect in Fe-ZONi, with some titanium, has previously been reported by . Thus, carbon is not necessary for the aging process and explanation 2 is at best incomplete. THERE are three objectives in translation of works of this character : to give a faithful, literal translation of the author's statements ; to give these in a manner which will interest the reader ; and to preserve, so far as is possible, the style of the original text. The task has been doubly difficult in this work because, in using Latin, the author availed himself of a medium which had ceased to expand a thousand years before his subject had in many particulars come into being ; in consequence he was in difficulties with a large number of ideas for which there were no corresponding words in the vocabulary at his command, and instead of adopting into the text his native German terms, he coined several hundred Latin expressions to answer his needs. It is upon this rock that most former attempts at translation have been wrecked. Except for a very small number, we believe we have been able to discover the intended meaning of such expressions from a study of the context, assisted by a very incomplete glossary prepared by the author himself, and by an exhaustive investigation into the literature of these subjects during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. That discovery in this particular has been only gradual and obtained after much labour, may be indicated by the fact that the entire text has been re-typewritten three times since the original, and some parts more often ; and further, that the printer's proof has been thrice revised. We have found some English equivalent, more or less satisfactory, for practically all such terms, except those of weights, the varieties of veins, and a few minerals. In the matter of weights we have introduced the original Latin, because it is impossible to give true equivalents and avoid the fractions of reduction ; and further, as explained in the Appendix on Weights it is impossible to say in many cases what scale the Author had in mind. The English nomenclature to be adopted has given great difficulty, for various reasons ; among them, that many methods and processes described have never been practised in English-speaking mining communities, and so had no representatives in our vocabulary, and we considered the introduction of German terms undesirable ; other methods and processes have become obsolete and their descriptive terms with them, yet we wished to avoid the introduction of obsolete or unusual English ; but of the greatest importance of all has been the necessity to avoid rigorously such modern technical terms as would imply a greater scientific understanding than the period possessed. "The mineral processing research community has devoted enormous efforts to the modelling of mineral separators over the last 50 years. While many efforts have been made to use only fundamental physics as a basis for the models, fluid flow patterns in separators are not simple while the motion of particle swarms through fluids is extremely complex.Sluices are the simplest forms of the flowing film concentrators and have been used in the mineral industry since at least the 15th century (Agricola, 1556). Flowing film concentrators, in general, still have widespread applications in the mineral industry and their designs vary according to the specific need.Particle separation in a sluice appears deceptively simple, but the separation mechanism has proven complex and difficult to quantify. Separation in the sluice takes place in a flowing film a few millimetres thick. The particles are suspended by turbulent eddies and motion relative to the fluid takes place in socalled hindered settling mode. The difficulty arises because the presence of the particles influences the flow pattern and when the particles are fully transported by the flow, the flowing slurry may not have the same viscosity as water and does not have the same density. For this reason a universal theory which can explain the behaviour of a suspension in a sluice or any other gravity equipment has still not been developed. Few attempts have been made to analyse the mechanisms involved in the concentrating processes of pinched sluices and Reichert cones.Fluid flow behaviour and slurry transportation characteristics in open channels have, however, been active research topics in the disciplines of fluid mechanics, chemical engineering and civil engineering for many years. As a result, an extensive literature is available, which has led to the development of the model described in this paper.In an effort to test the extent to which fundamental fluid mechanics can provide a prediction of particle separation, a study on a simple parallel-sided sluice has been carried out using glass beads at various particle concentrations and flow rates, and the actual particle separation taking place compared to predictions from modelling.The modelling strategy was divided into two parts; the first was to predict the horizontal slurry flow velocity profile and the second to predict the solid particle concentration over the depth of the flow at different flow conditions. The predictions were then validated with measured data sets. This can easily be done if the slurry flow is split at different fractional flow depths so that the mass flow of solids over different flow heights is measured accurately over a fixed period. Mass flow splits can then be calculated by integrating the product of the predicted slurry velocity profile and the predicted solids concentration profiles from the base of the sluice bed to the slurry free surface."

The Cartersville barite district is near Cartersville, Ga., in the southeastern part of Bartow County, about 43 miles northeast of Atlanta. The area over which active mining is being done extends about six miles in a northeasterly direction and is about three miles wide. Barite production in Georgia began about 1907,' but the existence of the mineral was known much earlier. At present four companies are operating washing plants and three other plants are operating on leases from those companies. The chief impurities in the ores are silica and iron oxide. The silica is easily washed and jigged out and gives little trouble. Any gravity separation between the iron and the barite is generally poor, owing to the slight difference in specific gravity. Two operators have turned to magnetic separation as the solution to the problem and have made remarkable improvements in the finished product. By very close sizing prior to jigging, the separation between iron and barite has been greatly improved. In some localities manganese occasionally appears as an impurity, but is fairly easy to eliminate by gravity methods. A considerable percentage of iron and silica is eliminated by being broken free in crushing. Until methods for the recovery of fine ore were introduced a minimum of crushing was done, but modern methods allow more than formerly. The depression years brought about the need for increased recovery of ore handled on the part of the producers and a demand for a higher grade of product on the part of the buyers. Improvements in milling and mining practice have had a far greater effect, however, than merely the production of a better grade of ore with greater recovery. They have opened for mining large areas that a few years ago were considered noncommercial deposits because of their inaccessibility and their high iron content. It is no exaggeration to say that the new methods have more than doubled present known reserves of barite ore of economic value.

The subject of the flow of homogeneous fluids—gases alone or gas-free liquids—through porous media may be considered at the present time to be fairly well completed. That is, analytical, graphical, numerical, or experimental methods are now available for obtaining detailed descriptions of the behavior of such homogeneous fluid systems of any reasonable geometry. Thus, satisfactory empirical techniques are now well established for the determination of the permeability of porous media for homogeneous fluids, the numerical magnitude of this permeability uniquely and completely describing a porous medium as a carrier of a homogeneous fluid. Considering this constant as known, the treatment of a wide variety of specific problems involving either the flow of gases or liquids has been carried through to satisfactory conclusions. Beginning with the simple case of strictly radial two-dimensional flow of a liquid or gas into a well under steady-state conditions, generalizations have been developed to apply for systems where the flow is not strictly radial, due either to a lack of uniformity in the reservoir pressures at points distant from the well or deviations from circularity of the external boundary whereby the fluid is being supplied, and finally, to the lack of complete penetration of the well into the producing strata. Satisfactory descriptions are now available for cases where gravity is acting as the driving agent inducing the flow of liquid into the well, either alone or as a supplement to the effect of pressure. The effect of acid treatment on limestone wells has been given a reasonable interpretation on the basis of the fundamental theory of the flow of homogeneous fluids through sands, as have the important features of the problem of water-coning. Then, too, systems in which the outlet of the fluid from the underground reservoir is of a predominantly multiple character may be now considered as in the domain of

NATURAL carbon dioxide has recently been exploited in the United States in consequence of oil and gas developments in the Western States and the growing demand by transcontinental and transoceanic shippers for solid carbon dioxide. The discovery by drilling of commercial deposits resulted in consideration of its geographic and geologic distribution and occurrence. Its wide distribution in nature is evidenced by its occurrence in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere. The question of origin of carbon dioxide involves consideration of theories similar to those concerning natural hydrocarbons, although available evidence favors an inor-ganic rather than an organic source. Areas favorable to development of commercial production appear to be those in proximity to igneous rocks or in the vicinity of decadent volcanic activity, where, it has long been known, the gas is evolved either free or dissolved in the waters of furnaroles, geysers or mud pots. Structure contour maps are presented showing the Wagon Mound anticline in New Mexico and the Farnham anticline, Utah. A well drilled on the latter supplies gas to a 20-ton plant manufacturing solid carbon dioxide at Wellington, Utah, on the Denver and Rio Grande R.R., whence it is shipped to surrounding territory and to the West Coast. Before funds are invested in a plant for the manufacture of liquid or solid carbon dioxide, whether supplied by wells or springs, an effort to ascertain the volume of gas available is advisable. The use of present methods of estimation of gas reserves with modifications to account for the quantity absorbed by any water present in the produc-ing formation is recommended. The Farnham anticline is used as an example and computations are made of the probable volume of gas originally present in the struc-ture. No attempt was made to compute reserves in the Niland area, California, for the reason that in such areas it is believed the volume is indeterminate.

Knowledge of the relative floatability of silicate minerals is increasing in importance as flotation is being applied to the concentration of nonsulfides. Many silicates are in themselves commercial products amenable to concentration by flotation. Moreover, the selective flotation of other nonsulfide minerals, such as cassiterite, depends largely upon the floatability of associated gangue silicates. Differences in floatability existing between the various silicates have not- been sufficiently appreciated; for example, the feldspars that differ greatly in floatability have generally been merely treated as "feldspar." It was the purpose of the work described in this paper to determine by experiment the differences in floatability between silicates; to investigate the causes for such differences, and to discover a means of predetermining approximate floatability without the necessity of experimentation. Determining Floatability The relative floatability of 20 silicates so selected as to represent all of the more common silicate types1 was obtained by flotation tests enumerated in Table 1. The mineral to be floated was crushed dry on a steel plate, and screened repeatedly during crushing through an 80-mesh screen in order to produce a sand with all grains as close to 80 mesh as possible. The sand was placed in dilute (6N) hydrochloric acid until free of soluble foreign material, and then washed with tap water about ten times in order to remove both acid and fines. The resultant product, which averaged 82 per cent plus 200 mesh, was floated in 50-gram charges in a 50-gram Denver celluloid flotation machine with 0.008 gram of terpineol, and from 0.01 to 0.05 gram of oleic acid in a solution acidified with sulfuric acid. The degree of separation of one mineral from another was determined by counting under a nlicroscope the grains of each mineral, both in the concentrate and in the tailings, and comparing their relative abundance in each. THE recently developed potash industry in southeastern New Mexico, though based on a relatively new discovery, marks the latest and perhaps culminating phase of the effort to obtain a domestic source of potash that began with the leaching of wood ashes more than 300 years ago. In the search for mineral potash in America, the Geological Survey has played a conspicuous part and has paved the way for much of the private activity that now bids fair to free the nation of foreign domina¬tion in supplying the nation's potash requirements. HISTORICAL REVIEW A pamphlet published by Thomas Stephen in 1758 pictures the industry in its early struggling condition.1 Just before the Civil War, a deposit of mineral potash had been found in Germany and its value as a fertilizer had been discovered. On this account and because the supply of wood ashes had decreased, the Ameri-can potash industry gradually lost its importance. During the next 50 years, with European potash available with little effort and with satisfactory substitutes on the market for the manufacture of soap, the interest of the American people in American potash declined. In 1910 this interest was suddenly revived by the abrogation of American potash contracts in Europe. Congress passed an act, approved by President Taft March 4, 1911, providing for "researches with a view to determining geological conditions favorable to the presence of deposits of potash salts." Appropriations were made to the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Soils to carry out the provisions of this act. The work of the Survey was directed toward the finding of commercial bodies of natural soluble potash salts; the Bureau of Soils was more concerned with the processes of extracting potash from industrial wastes and organic sources. Private agencies also became interested in the program. The Geological Survey has continued its search throughout the ensuing period of more than 20 years and has studied many types of deposits in many parts of the country.

The process of ?gasfreeing? has been defined3/ as "* * * the removal of oil and vapors from tanks, pipelines, and compartments to render such spaces safe for the intended work," Generally, part or all of a vessel is gasfreed for one of several reasons: Periodic cleaning; tank inspection or repairs; shipyard overhaul or major repairs; or change of cargo, Curing the gas- freeing, flammable or explosive4/ mixtures (mixtures through which a flame can propagate after ignition by an open flame, heated object, electrical charge, or other means) may be produced. These mixtures create an explosion hazard, as the pressures produced after their ignition are often great enough to completely demolish the vessel and kill all those aboard, This paper outlines a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the gas explosion hazards likely to be encountered while gasfreeing a vessel compartment. To better understand these hazards it will first be necessary to review the language used in gas- explosions work. This language is considered in the following sections. Inert gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, water vapor, and others can be used to decrease the range of combustible-vapor concentrations in which flammable mixtures are formed. Sufficient quantities of such gases can often be added to cause a mixture that originally was flamable to become nonflammable. Unfortunately, the use of water vapor in this application is complicated by the fact that elevated temperatures are required to keep the water in the vapor state. In practice, it may be difficult to maintain these elevated temperatures throughout the space (such as a cargo tank) to be inerted for any length of time. Accordingly, where other inert gases are not available, it may be desirable to gasfree a Lank by using heated air. To do this, the combustible vapors should be flushed as quickly as possible from the space to be gasfreed. In a properly designed system, large tanks were gasfreed with a littlee as 6 volumes of air per volume of tank capacity.
