When coarse gold is present in an ore, there are advantages in physically recovering this gold in the grinding section of the ore processing plant. This reduces the risk of the coarse gold being locked up in the grinding section equipment, reduces the quantity of activated carbon to be eluted and reduces the risk of gold passing out of the cyanide leaching circuit only partially dissolved. The free gold may be recovered by various mechanical means utilising the significant difference between the specific gravity of the gold and waste minerals. Frequently, sulphide minerals and ball mill attrition steel in the form of fines and chips are present in the ground ore and behave in a similar manner to the gold in the concentrating process. These materials must be removed to produce a concentrate suitable for direct smelting and several stages of cleaning, sometimes utilising different physical principles, may be required. The removal of these materials invariably results in a loss of gold from the final concentrate. The rejected materials containing significant quantities of gold are returned to the grinding section, consequently the opportunity for a high and early recovery has been lost. The quantity of gold returned to the grinding section will vary according to the number and type of cleaning stages and the physical characteristics of the materials and the gold but surveys of the gravity concentration processes suggest that it may be as high as 50%. To maximise the recovery of gold from the primary gravity concentrate, some operations batch cyanide leach this concentrate with or without additional reagents. The method of agitation and solution recovery vary. The most common method of agitation is by a high-speed propeller mixer and the least expensive but time-consuming method of solution recovery is by decantation after settling and by repeated decant washing. The pregnant gold solution is either introduced into the main ore leaching circuit or the gold is recovered by direct electrowinning. After commissioning in 1994, Union Reefs Gold Mine (URGM) experienced below expected recovery of gold from the gravity concentrate generated from the Knelson Concentrators. It was shown that the recovery into the Knelson Concentrate was high but that the subsequent mechanical concentrating techniques of tabling and magnetic separation resulted in significant gold being returned to the grinding circuit.

Of the important phenomenon of the hardening of steel, Professor Sauveurl says: It would seem as if the methods used to date for the elucidation of this complex problem have yielded all they are capable of yielding and that further straining of these methods will only serve to confuse the issue, the point having been reached when this juggling, no matter how skilfully done, with allotropy, solid solutions, and strains is causing weariness without advancing the solution of the problem. The tendency of late has been to abandon the safer road of experimental facts and to enter the maze of excessive speculations, in which there is great danger of some becoming hopelessly lost. The conclusion seems warranted that new avenues of approach must be found if we are to obtain a correct answer to this apparent enigma. With some degree of fitness we may say this of other problems. It seems likely that one of the new avenues of approach to many metallo-graphic problems is the study of crystal structure, or more accurately, the atomic arrangement, by means of the x-ray spectrometer. The crystal structure of some materials has been carefully worked out by the mineralogist, but his methods are, in general, unsuited to commercial metals and a method that yields even better information is at hand as the result of work on the diffraction of x-rays by Laue and the Braggs2 and later by HullI3 St. John, and others. It should be understood that the contour of free crystals, which is the subject of measurements by the crystallographer, is the result of the atomic structure and, in general, bears a simple and obvious relation to it. The use of the x-ray spectrometer4 has been described frequently, so the procedure will not be given here.

In any line of human activity logical handling requires an amount of attention to each phase that is in keeping with the importance of that phase. In the complex and rapidly changing field of modern ferrous metallurgy it is difficult to allot the proper degree of attention to the various subjects, and it is not surprising that one or more subjects of major importance should for a time be neglected. Bessemer steel is a good example of a neglected subject. It is largely taken for granted, inferior physical quality is assumed for it, and there is a • lack of interest in its technical development and commercial application. Availability of supply is limited. In spite of this technical indifference, limited source and lack of commercial exploitation, bessemer steel constitutes a large volume of tonnage in daily use. There is a fairly prevalent idea even among technical people that bessemer steel survives mostly because of low cost and by reason of a dwindling residue of applications sufficiently common to permit of its use. The difference in cost between bessemer and open-hearth steel is governed largely by the relative cost of manufacture of pig iron and the market price of steel scrap. During the past four years there have been long periods of time during which the price of steel scrap was low enough so that open-hearth steel was considerably lower in manufacturing cost than bessemer. As to application, it may be pointed out that thousands of tons of this material in the form of bessemer screw steel are applied for moving parts in automotive and other equipment. Some forging work and considerable heat-treating, particularly carburizing, is performed on this grade. From an economic standpoint the most effective contribution of bessemer steel lies in its free machining qualities. It is by far the freest

The process of plastic extension of face-centered cubic single crystalline rods is so well understood, since the notable studies of Taylor and Elam,1 that the change in orientation of any crystal by slip and rotation may be predicted from the measured elongation. It is customary to assume a very homogeneous deformation, wherein gliding lamellar arc free to rotate so that their slip direction continually approaches the axis of the rod, until a second slip system comes into operation; whereupon conjugate slip proceeds quantitatively to an end adjustment with the [121] direction in the axis of the rod. This process has been checked in malty face.-centered cubie materialsand and readily permits the preparation of specimens that have been subjtvted to various determinable amounts of shearing action. It is elearly of interest to study in such measurably strained speeimens the, development of a recrystallized structure on annealing and if possilble detect the source of nuclei from which the new crystals grow. Strain-:~nneali~ig experiments of this charactcr have been performed by others but not in detail sufficient to permit a study, for example, of the number of recrystallized grains vs. the amount of shear. In the experiments now reported, this was done with a wide variety of orientations covering nearly the entire range of slip on a single system and corresponding to amounts of shear (ratio of shearing distance to distance between lamellae at the conclusion of a test of from 0.08 to 0.57. A particular point wa-made of determining the crystallite rotation, or small angular range. assumed by the octahedral slip plane after these various amounts of shear. The, mechanism of reerystallization and the magnitude and effeet of recovery on the recrystallization process was investigated.

THE general subject of accurate pyrometry, its great development in recent years, and the importance of its application in arts and manufactures is so ably treated in other papers that this paper will bee confined to a resume of some research work on certain temperature effects in carbon and other steels, some of which appear to, be new. The results of these researches are embodied in several papers presented to' various scientific societies during the last few years, most of them under the general title of Spontaneous Generation of Heat in Recently Hardened Steel.1 Several years ago, when studying the behavior, tinder certain conditions, of specimens of hardened tool steel, I observed that they all spontaneously generated a small quantity of heat, the rate of generation diminishing from day to day for several weeks before generation became imperceptible in the sensitive calorimeter used. In each case the steel had been hardened only a few days prior to its use. It seemed highly probable that the generation of heat was associated with some sort of "seasoning" or incipient annealing process, perhaps accompanied by slight changes of volume, and that it would be most rapid immediately after hardening. I subsequently investigated this curious phenomenon more fully. Twelve ½ in. round bars of tool steel, 5 in. long and with machined surfaces, were hardened by heating to high cherry red in a reducing atmosphere of a gas furnace and quenched in cold water. The bars then had a thin strongly adhering coating of black oxide. They were next stirred in a large quantity of water at room temperature, to acquire that temperature, wiped dry, and oiled with heavy, neutral mineral oil to prevent generation of heat by further surface oxidation, wiped free of excess of oil and placed in the copper cylinder of a heat-insulated box.

Coal is a combustible, carbonaceous, sedimentary rock that is formed by the accumulation, compaction, and physical and chemical alteration of vegetation [Simon and Hopkins 1981; Bates and Jackson 1987]. Coal is classified according to its type, grade, and rank. The type of coal relates to the plant materials from which the coal originated. The grade of coal refers to the purity of the coal-or the amount of inorganic material (including ash and sulfur) left after the coal is burned [Bates and Jackson 1987; Stefanko 1983]. The rank of coal indicates its degree of metamorphosis and roughly correlates to the geological age of the coal or the geological environment from which it has been mined [Bates and Jackson 1987]. Rank also indicates the percentage of carbon in dry, mineral-free coal [Whitten and Brooks 1973] and the degree to which the coalification process has progressed [Larsen 1981]. The geological process of coalification begins with organic materials (e.g., celluloses, lignins, and other plant compounds that are deoxygenated and then dehydrogenated) and ends with coal of various geological ages, from lignite to anthracite [Larsen 1981]. Table 3- 1 presents the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) classification of coals by rank. According to Parkes [1982], high-rank coal includes anthracite and semianthracite coal ("hard coal," with 91% to 95% carbon); intermediate-rank coal includes low-, medium-, and high-volatile bituminous and sub-bituminous coal ("soft coal," with 76% to 90% carbon); and low-rank coal includes lignite (with 65% to 75% carbon or less). The rank of coal tends to increase from the western to the eastern United States, with anthracite occurring primarily in eastern Pennsylvania [Schlick and Fannick 1971]. Most of the coal currently mined in the United States is bituminous [Given 1984]. A classification of the coal in the United States is provided in Table 3-2.

Applications of rock mechanics to the design of engineering structures in rock involve the assumption that the stresses are due entirely to the present applied loads. For instance, it is assumed that the vertical normal stress in undisturbed rock free of topographic effects is equal to the weight per unit area of the overburden. In fact, vertical dilatational strains associated with stresses of more than 100 times the present overburden pressure have been measured by strain-relief methods on outcrops. 1,2 The notion of residual strain (stress) or latent stress3 seems unassailable; and indeed this has long been recognized by metallurgists. It is difficult, however, to assess the residual component of the in-situ state of elastic strain with conventional strain relief methods employed in mines or down boreholes. That is, in principle, the in-situ state results from the superposition of present applied loads (natural or man- induced) and potentially recoverable elastic strains (stresses) that exist in a given volume of material even though there are no external forces across the boundaries of the body (Voight,4 and Fig, 1). Accordingly, only in unloaded blocks can the true residual strains be measured by strain relief methods. Using X-rays, the elastic strains locked within the quartz grains or crystals of a rock can be measured. These strains are known to persist even when the rock is reduced to small chips but to vanish when the rock is disaggregated and the grains are powdered. Although we have just begun to investigate the mechanisms by which the strains are stored (see Preliminary Results), we believe that "pressure solution'' at grain boundaries, secondary cementation under load, permanent ("plastic") deformation, and temperature changes are possible processes. We cannot expect, within the limits of this paper, to treat this subject exhaustively, but will endeavor, in the following, to present it in as concise a manner as is consistent with a clear exposition of its importance. Ores of titanium, titaniferous iron-ores (that is, iron-ores containing a notable amount of titanic acid, TiO2,, say not less than 5 per cent., generally 10 to 20 per cent., and frequently more, up to 40 per cent. or thereabout), occur all over the world in immense quantity, " in mountain masses," constituting in some localities, as in Sweden, Norway, Canada, the Adirondacks (N. Y.), in North Carolina and other States of the Union, the geological formation itself, the igneous rocks having, in many places, been so permeated with the metallic oxides as to justify their being called iron-ores. As a rule they are Bessemer ores, quite free from phosphorus and sulphur, though not invariably so. When the percentage of titanic acid is very high, that of the iron is low, but the proportions do not necessarily vary in the same ratio; that is, a rich ore may contain more titanic acid than one lower in iron. The percentage of iron varies, being as low as 35 to 36 per cent. in real ilmenite. It is more generally not less than 50 to 55 per cent., reaching often an average of 58 to 60 per cent., and as high as 63 to 65 per cent. It is obvious that if these ores were to be considered in the same light as other iron-ores, equally rich in iron, they would form an excellent stock for blast-furnaces for years to come, as their supply might be called inexhaustible, and they could

The Western Cape Mineral Processing Facility (WCMPF) is a collaborative educational initiative between the Department of Process Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch and the Chemical Engineering Departments at the University of Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. The primary objective of the WCMPF is to facilitate the education, development and graduation of suitably qualified engineering graduates and diplomats for the mining and mineral processing industries. In recent years the WCMPF has embarked on a number of initiatives aimed at improving the quality of mineral processing education which include, more importantly the introduction of novel ?end to end? or ?integrated? practicals. The practicals are developed around a specific mineral theme or route, which more than often includes the development of several new pilot plant practicals demonstrating key unit operations or processes in the selected mineral theme or route. The most recent mineral processing pilot plant practical programme is developed around the beneficiation of heavy mineral sands. The programme consist of the following developed pilotplant practicals: the online electrostatic separation of free flowing mineral sands using a Roche Mining Carrara high tension roll separator incorporating a Blue Cube Systems MQi in-line mineral quantifier; the production of titania-rich slag and pig iron from the smelting of ilmenite and anthracite in a 60 kW direct current (DC) plasma arc furnace as well as the mineralogical characterization of the feed and products; the continuous closed-circuit ball milling and screen classification of titania-rich slag. This paper illustrates the important role of a well-designed heavy mineral sands beneficiation pilot plant practical programme in facilitating the education and development of suitably qualified personnel for the mining and mineral process industries.

The TTT curves of 0.1 pct C, 13 pct Cr steels containing up to 12 pct Co have been determined in order to establish whether the effect of cobalt is similar to that observed m plain carbon steels. It is shown that cobalt increases the incubation time and decreases the transformation rate, though not in an uniform way. The bainitic transfornation is displaced to lower temperature and overlaps partially the martensitic zone. ThE effect of cobalt on the transformation of a plain carbon austenite has been studied by many investi-gators.'-3 It was shown that cobalt displaces the TTT curves to shorter times and diminishes the harden-ability. The interpretations given for this effect of cobalt are conflicting. According to E. Houdremont,4 cobalt increases the transformation rate of austenite because it increases the diffusion of carbon as shown in the experiments of E. Houdremont and H.Schrader,' R.Smoluchowski,5 and M. Blanter.6 On the other hand, M. Hawites and R. Mehl3 deny on the basis of their own experiments any effect of cobalt on the diffusion of carbon and they assume that an explanation should be found in an eventual effect of cobalt on the mechanism of nucleation and growth of pearlite. W. C. Hagel, G. M. Pound, and R. F. Mehl7 have shown by calorimetric measurements that cobalt increases the free energy of the austenite-pearlite transformation in an eutectoid steel and this result explains qualitatively the observed effect of cobalt on the rate of nucleation and growth of pearlite. FLOTATION of sulphide minerals and native metals is no longer a practical difficulty. The underlying scientific principles of the method, although not explored in anything like complete detail, have been formulated with sufficient breadth so that the direction of attack on any specific case is clearly indicated. It has been known since the earliest days of flotation that certain of the nonsulphide nonmetal minerals-e.g., sulphur and graphite-would respond to flotation by oils as sulphides do; therefore they have been grouped with sulphides in many patents. But since the development of the chemical theory of collection, 1,2,3 this similarity in action has been one of the facts cited in disproof of the theory by opponents of the hypothesis. 4 5-1 Air levitationt of certain oxidized minerals, both metalliferoust and nonmetalliferous, and separation thereby from other oxidized minerals, is a recent development in practice, although the discovery of the method dates back 17 years .7 This paper presents evidence that the principles underlying the air levitation of the nonsulphide nonmetal minerals are the same as those utilized in the flotation of the sulphides and native metals. It will be apparent immediately to anyone with knowledge of mineral concentration that separation of air-levitated minerals in water from minerals not so levitated is a simple matter of water-gravity concentration, the separating device employed depending solely upon the size of the particles treated and the buoyancy differences effected by the levitation. The usual separating means employed are: (1) a flotation machine for fine, slimy and for well aerated granular material; (2) shaking tables for granular less aerated material. A number of investigators have noted the importance of various precipitation reactions on the properties of commercial-purity beryllium.1-5 Carrabine, for example, has demonstrated the interaction of iron and aluminum on the mechanical properties of hot-pressed polycrystalline beryllium.6 He considered the determining factor on elevated-temperature properties to be a reversible AlFeBe, precipitation reaction which could be directly related to the Fe/Al impurity ratio of the beryllium. Any aluminum in excess of the stoichio-metric amount required to form A1FeBe4 was presumed to remain primarily in the grain boundaries. We have observed, by transmission electron microscopy, such a grain boundary effect after various heat treatments of beryllium sheet. The starting material in this investigation was bare-rolled beryllium ingot sheet (0.001 to 0.005 in. thick), in contrast to the hot-pressed powder utilized by Carra-bine. It should be noted from the ingot sheet analysis shown in Table I that the Fe/Al weight ratio was near unity which would provide some free aluminum although the total aluminum and iron content was still small. Fig. l(a) shows some aluminum or aluminum-rich precipitates in the grain boundaries of a beryllium foil which had been quenched from 1200°C into brine at -TPC. Similar grain boundary precipitates were found, particularly at grain boundary intersections, in other samples quenched from 1100° and 1000°C. The length of annealing time at these elevated temperatures did not appear to substantially alter the amount of grain boundary precipitates, thus attesting to their relative insolubility. Charcoal was the predominant blast-furnace fuel until 1838, when it was found, by the operation of a 2-ton experimental furnace, that anthracite could also be used. This information was a stimulus to the iron industry, particularly in eastern Pennsylvania where anthracite was available at low cost. The production of anthracite pig iron increased steadily and, in 1855, its tonnage exceeded that of charcoal iron. Of the 680 furnaces in operation in 1874, the 226 using anthracite produced nearly one-half the total tonnage. In 1869, the production of coke furnaces exceeded that of charcoal furnaces and, in 1875, coke surpassed anthracite as a metallurgical fuel. In 1907, the output of anthracite pig dropped well below a million tons and its present significance is largely historical. In recent years, the production of coke has gone hand in hand with the production of pig iron and it has gradually attained the position it now occupies as a universal blast-furnace fuel. Charcoal, however, has great merit as a blast-furnace fuel chief1y because of its freedom from ash and sulfur. The harmful effect of the latter and the necessity of keeping the percentage of this element in pig iron at a minimum are well recognized. Other contaminating elements can be reduced to specified limits in the steel-making process, but the control of sulfur belongs essentially to the blast furnace. The purpose of this paper is to point out the distribution of this impurity in blast-furnace materials and to indicate how its presence alters the composition, quantity, and free-running or critical temperature of the slag, and the relation between these factors, fuel economy, and the cost of iron. IN the inevitable conquest of the blast furnace by metallurgical science in the solution of the problem of how to make more and better iron or to burn less coke, or both, it is highly desirable first to find out why the efficiency of the furnace generally is no better than it is. The immediate need would seem to be a theory to account for the existing facts. Explanation for the quantitative results obtained in current practice has been strangely lacking. One reason for this may be found perhaps in the custom of think-ing of efficiency in terms of coke consumption. Before efficiency can be explained there should be a fairly exact knowledge of what it is. A statement of the pounds of coke used per ton of iron made may have value in indicating comparative results in smelting similar ores with similar cokes, but it tells very little of the efficiency of the operation. When the materials are different, one practice burning 1800 lb. may be less efficient than another using 2000 lb. A better measure is the pig and slag per unit of coke. What is needed is a specific description of efficiency as a' definite quantity having an exact meaning. Such description is afforded by expressing efficiencies in terms of the respective proportions of the fuel energy absorbed in and chargeable to the various actions known to be -taking place in the furnace. Concretely, the energy value of a pound of coke having 85 per cent carbon blown with air heated to 1200° F. is about 7650 lb.-cal. (13,770 B.t.u.). There are found in nature upward of II2 minerals containing antimony, but only a few of them, listed in Table I, can be considered as antimony ore-forming minerals. Stibnite (Sb2S3), antimony sulphide or glance, is the principal ore of antimony. The oxide ores—cervantite, kermesite, valentinite, sernarmontite—occur sparingly in nature. Dry methods are generally adopted for the extraction of the metal. Electrometal-lurgical methods have had much attention in America and Germany and have not yet found, on economic grounds, practical or extended application, except in a few places. During recent years, treatment of the poor grades of the ore, especially sulphide, by ore-dressing methods, has commanded some attention and been adopted at a few plants. The impure sulphide of antimony, resulting from the liquation process, is called lLneedle," "liquated" or "crude" anti- mony, and the refined metal itself is called antimony "regulus." The different processes for the treatment of antimony ores are shown in the diagram of Fig. I. Liquation of Crude Antimony The first step in the smelting of antimony is a simple one, the process of LLliquation," which produces crude or needle antimony. Ores containing $ 50 per cent Sb are used in the liquation process for the production of crude. The temperature required for liquation is between 550' and 600°C. Ores to be liquated are broken to about walnut size. If the pieces are larger than this, the low heat used will not penetrate' effectively, and if they are smaller the ore tends to pack too closely for adequate penetration. A packed charge also prevents the free escape of the fused sulphide. Of the important phenomenon of the hardening of steel, Professor Sauveurl says: It would seem as if the methods used to date for the elucidation of this complex problem have yielded all they are capable of yielding and that further straining of these methods will only serve to confuse the issue, the point having been reached when this juggling, no matter how skilfully done, with allotropy, solid solutions, and strains is causing weariness without advancing the solution of the problem. The tendency of late has been to abandon the safer road of experimental facts and to enter the maze of excessive speculations, in which there is great danger of some becoming hopelessly lost. The conclusion seems warranted that new avenues of approach must be found if we are to obtain a correct answer to this apparent enigma. With some degree of fitness we may say this of other problems. It seems likely that one of the new avenues of approach to many metallo-graphic problems is the study of crystal structure, or more accurately, the atomic arrangement, by means of the x-ray spectrometer. The crystal structure of some materials has been carefully worked out by the mineralogist, but his methods are, in general, unsuited to commercial metals and a method that yields even better information is at hand as the result of work on the diffraction of x-rays by Laue and the Braggs2 and later by HullI3 St. John, and others. It should be understood that the contour of free crystals, which is the subject of measurements by the crystallographer, is the result of the atomic structure and, in general, bears a simple and obvious relation to it. The use of the x-ray spectrometer4 has been described frequently, so the procedure will not be given here.

Ik presenting this paper I will attempt to answer certain questions proposed at this meeting and describe and illustrate methods of producing sound steel in an economical and hence commercial manner, which are adaptable to the production of practically all steel manufacturers, by readily effected rational changes in the methods of casting, cooling, and subsequent handling of the ingots. In some of the high-grade mills of America, where it is essential to obtain perfectly sound billets or blooms, it is the practice to discard from 35 to 40 per cent. of the crop- or pipe-end, and even with this excessive discard, secondary pipe or shrinkage-cavities are frequently discovered during subsequent working of the blooms and billets into their various manufactured products. The usual discard of from 10 to 20 per cent, from the crop-end of the ingot, which is made by the present generally employed methods of form and solidifying of the castings, certainly does not give the slightest assurance of the saleable product being physically sound or chemically homogeneous. I am aware that in the past there has been and at the present time there still is a decided difference of expert opinion as to what constitutes physically sound steel. Physically sound steel, as I would classify it, must be free from blow-holes as well as pipe. The line of demarcation between harmless and harmful blow-holes is exceedingly difficult to define. It is certainly the better and safer practice to eliminate blow-holes from the saleable portion of the ingots and to form a well-defined shrinkage-cavity or pipe at the upper crop-end of ingot.
