Optimum design of a structure obviously requires a thorough knowledge of the materials to be utilized in its construction. When the structure is a tunnel, a most important element in its design and construction is the geology. As a tunnel may be many miles in length and at depths of hundreds or thousands of feet, we face a real problem to meet the needs of the designer and builder. How can we determine the properties of our construction materials in this situation? Engineering geology has had a formidable challenge to meet the requirements of conventional excavation methods; the advent of machine methods for rapid excavation compounds the requirements for more detailed and more precise geological knowledge of the tunnel site. This chapter will discuss the means now at our disposal to meet the challenge to produce the required data on the tunnel site in the preconstruction stage. Our considerations will be directed towards construction of a free-flow tunnel, primarily in fractured rock formations, without any requirements for the rock mechanics type of in-situ tests that might be made for a pressure tunnel or for a large opening for an underground power plant. In essence the investigation must determine: (1) The geologic conditions affecting the type of construction equipment and excavation method of the rock to be broken and removed. (2) The quantities of water and gas to be encountered. (3) The strength and stability of the material surrounding the bore and its need for support and lining. GEOLOGICAL FACTORS AFFECTING TUNNEL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION The engineer or contractor may classify the rock as either competent or incompetent or more pointedly as "good" or "bad" ground. I. The Property. The Homestake Mining Co. has acquired through consolida tion the ground and equipment of the Father De Smet Con solidated Gold-Mining Co., the Deadwood-Terra Mining Go., the Caledonia Gold-Mining Co. and the Highland Mining Co., at and near Lead, Lawrence county, South Dakota, in the northern portion of the Black Hills. The company owns or controls 250 claims, comprising 2,616 acres and covering about 8,000 ft. along the strike of the lode. At the surface there are several veins, of which three have united in depth, where the main vein ranges from 300 to 500 ft. in width. The 1,100-ft. level is the lowest at present. The rock of both walls is, so far as known at present, carboniferous alate, and the country is penetrated by a system of porphyry dikes, and in some places capped with porphyry. The output of the company up to January, 1903, has been, approximately, $70,000,000. II. The Ore. The oxidized, open-cut ore is nearly all treated in the three mills on the northern part of the property, which are as follows : The Mineral Point (formerly the De Smet), of 100 stamps, the Monroe (formerly Caledonia), of 100 stamps, and the Pocahon tas (formerly the Deadwood-Terra), of 160 stamps. A cyanide plant, to treat the leachable portion of the tailings from these North End mills, has recently been installed and put into oper ation at Gayville, or Blacktail as it is now known. The advance made in recent times in this branch of metallurgy is indicated by the attention the subject is receiving from important American copper-producing companies. Reference to the files of publications devoted to the mining industry discloses that some 20 American companies are actively investigating the amenability of their ore, or other material, to leaching methods, and that plants of varying capacities up to 10,000 tons per day arc under construction or are projected. Several leaching works are in commercial operation. It has been frequently pointed out that no method of leaching is universally applicable, for the reason that each ore differs in some particular from apparently similar ore found elsewhere, and also because local conditions are rarely the same even where the ore closely approximates in character that being worked at some other point. For this reason the older companies are approaching the matter in a conservative manner, experimentally determining for themselves the salient features in each instance. In considering a leaching proposition three factors at once fix the attention: (1) disengaging the metal from mineralized forms in which it is found in nature; (2) recovering the metal in a commercial state after it has been dissolved; (3) the apparatus best adapted to carrying out the several operations. Bringing the Metal into Solution This feature.has been found to present no serious difficulties. Numerous solvents for copper are known, and it has been repeatedly demonstrated on a commercial scale that from 80 to 90 per cent. of the metal contained in an ore can be rapidly brought into solution. Economics has been defined as the useful application of wealth or material resources. The search of alchemists in the Middle Ages for s formula by which base metals might be transmuted into gold was no more intensive than has been the search by all branches of the oil industry for methods whereby the rnatcrial resources of West Texas in the nature of sulfur-bearing oil might be usefully applied. The purpose of this paper is to present in brief space developments that are conceded to possess economic significance. History The first discovery of oil in commercial quantities in the Permian Basin of West Texas was the Westbrook field in Mitchell County in 1920. Three years later the discovery well in the Big Lake field was cornpleted as a small pumper (70 bbl.) at a depth of 3028 ft. In 1925, discovery of the Powell or World pool in Crockett County stimulated activities in the Permian Basin, further establishing the importance of the Permian limestones as sources of production. The years 1925 and 1926 were marked by a period of extensive leasing and drilling activities. At the close of 1926 more than 7,000,000 acres had been leased and discovery wells completed in the Hurdle, Hendricksand Yates fields, definitely establishing the importance of the Permian Basin as a source of production from free-flowing wells. Review of Fields The producing fields in the Permian Basin are grouped on three distinct lines of folding. These may be separately identified as the Big Lake-Powell fold; the Yates, Hurdle, and Church-McElroy area and the Winkler County development. Production is derived from a porous limestone stratigraphically uniform, encountered at depths varying from 900 to 3100 ft. IT is rather the general belief that acidified solutions of ferrous salts are readily oxidized when in contact with air, and often elaborate pre-cautions are taken to prevent it. This, however, is not the case and several statements may be found in the literature expressing surprise at the extreme slowness with which oxidation takes place when air or oxygen is bubbled through such a solution. Thus C. Baskerville and R. Stevenson1 "observed with surprise" that no. oxidation apparently took place, as shown by titration with 0.5 N KMnO4, when a stream of air was passed for 3 hr. through an acidified solution of ferrous ammonium sulfate or ferrous sulfate. The same authors state that even the presence of salts such as cobalt, chromium, copper, manganese, etc., which usually act as oxygen carriers, had "no effect upon the oxidation as was observed by, passing air for 3 hr. through solutions of Mohr's salt acidified with sulfuric acid." While this statement will be proved further on to be at least partly incorrect the slowness of the oxidation of ferrous salts alone has been previously established by McBain.2. His investigation also showed that the rate of oxidation increases markedly with an increase in the concentration of ferrous sulfate as well as that of oxygen; the concentration of free acid had a comparatively small influence, which in the case of sulfuric acid was to retard slightly the rate of reaction. More recently R. Thomas and E. T. Williams3 investigated the catalytic effect of nitric oxide on the oxidation of ferrous salts, which had been earlier patented by McCulloch.4 They found that the probable mechanism of the catalytic action was the oscillation of the catalyst between two stages of oxidation and its interaction alternately with the oxygen and the ferrous iron.

"The result of extensive research into fundamental mixed metal oxide catalyst morphology has produced a next generation all titanium Dimensionally Stable Anode (DSA ®). This new DSA ® anode, patent pending, is tailored for electrowinning of non-ferrous metals (copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc) by means of this new coating technology.These DSA ® anodes are characterized by a hanger bar with vertical distributor bars, having primary titanium mesh attached by weldments. The active mesh is provided with noble-metal electrocatalytic coatings, consisting of iridium and/or ruthenium oxides, obtained by thermal decomposition of precursor solutions applied to the titanium substrates. The catalytic activity of state-of-the-art DSA ® anodes is increased by controlling the crystallite size of the noble-metals without decreasing the decomposition temperature. It is known that below a certain value (typically 400°C) the stability of these oxides, and associated lifetime, is seriously compromised. A highly active DSA ® anode, consisting of a quasi-amorphous phase, is obtained at high temperature (above 450°C), therefore not compromising lifetime performance. Through optimization of these design parameters, the manufacture of these novel anodes was identified.DSA ® anode performance advantages include: lead-free ' green' all titanium anodes, true leadfree cathode quality, energy savings of 0.3 to 0.55 V can be realized depending on the EW application when compared to industry standard lead-alloy anodes, eliminate need for cobalt sulphate addition required for lead anodes, sustainability designed into long-life recoatable anode structures, increase plant cathode output through increased current density operations, improve plant on-stream production, no sludge generated or removed, and improve current distribution producing smooth high efficiency cathode.Introduction of ProductThere are many factors to consider when engineering a high performance DSA ® electrowinning anode. Half of the anode's performance is derived from the physical attributes of the electrocatalyst and methods employed when applying this catalyst to the titanium anode structure. The other half of the performance benefits relate to the proper structural design of the anode. The year 1916 broke all previous records of mineral production in the Territory. As a consequence, there has been a noteworthy increase in the number of mines in active operation or under development, though the greater part of the increased output is the result of greater activity at mines already producing rather than of opening new mines. Owing to available funds not being sufficient to meet the cost of travel in the interior of the Territory during the winter months, the Federal mine inspector was unable during the spring to visit the placer mines of the interior as has been his custom in the past. However, by working in close cooperation with the Territorial in- spector, who left Juneau in June to take the first boat down the Yukon to Fairbanks after the spring break-up, it was possible to visit hurriedly all the larger mining centers of the Territory. The Territorial inspector covered the districts from Fairbanks to Nome and the Federal inspector covered those of southeastern and south- western Alaska. A number of applicants have begun mining coal on ground held under free-use 10-acre permits, and have furnished coal for local use. The larger leasing units in the Bering River and Matanuska coal fields have been advertised and applications for leases have been submitted. These applications came too late in the fall for active development to begin before the end of the year. The Government railroad has been built from Anchorage to the center of the Matanuska coal field, and private interests have under- taken the building of a standard-gage road from a point known as Goose City on Controller Bay to Canyon Creek, in the Bering River field. Capital has become interested in the oil fields on Controller Bay, and plans have been made for more active exploration and production. The work of the Federal mine inspector is still handicapped by the lack of funds for additional field assistants and of the office ac- commodations necessary for carrying on the work with the efficiency that its importance warrants.

"INTRODUCTION Sponge iron has been made commercially since 1912 at a Swedish ceramic plant; and the product, known as Swedish disk-type nagger sponge iron, has an excellent reputation as a superior furnace feed wherever high-grade steels are made.The general procedure for making brickyard sponge iron was described frequent in Swedish technical journals before 1932 and at that time consisted in filling clay refractory containers, called saggers, with iron ore plus the necessary quantity of solid reducing agent and then firing in an ordinary ceramic kiln. Two types of sponge iron were made in this way: (1) An inferior, high-sulfur product obtained by mixing the ore and solid reducing agent; and (2) a high-grade, low-sulfur product made by filling the sagger with alternete layers of unmixed ore and reducer, yielding sintered disks of metallic iron particles.Swedish disk-type sponge iron of interest to the steel industry because it has a very low sulfur content, even when made by the use of low-grade, high-sulfur coals for reducing and firing. The Swedish product also contains little siliceous gangue residue and is almost phos¬phorus-free. To those features must be added the high metallic-iron content -90 to 96 percent - and freedom from even small amounts of the metals that are undesirable in steel making.The details essential for successful operation of this procedure are not known, especially as regards improvements said to have been made since 19;2. The Bureau of Mines therefore decided to determine some of these missing details, and this report records the results of the first set of experiments on the manufacture of brickyard or sagger sponge iron."

DURING the past few years, the Mineral Point Zinc Co. has had under consideration the improvement of various types of gas-filtering apparatus used in the removal of dust from crushing and milling plants, in the manufacture of oxide, and on blast-furnace fume and sintering furnaces. The original equipment of the various plants of the company was, of course, along lines of the standard stationary bag house. These houses required large surfaces, hand shaking, and varied only in the manner of the collection of solids and in the distribution of the gas. Early in 1908, the first trial of a mechanical bag house was made at Nassau Plant at Depue, Ill. The duty of this installation was on dust-laden gas from a fine-crushing mill. The Printz and Rau bag machine was finally adopted and put into operation. This ingenious machine embodied what were then to us two novel features in bag-house practice: 1. An intermittent crinkling and snapping of the filtering fabric to free the meshes of solids. i 2. A reversal of gas flow for a short period by a temporary connection w th the suction trunk. This equipment worked fairly well except in cold weather, when we ran into condensation troubles. Had we at that time understood more fully some of the limitations of fabric filtering work, these might well have been remedied. We were impressed by this experience, however, with the efficiency of sudden tension on the fabric under suction. After a study had been made of some of the Western blast-furnace houses using the reversal-of-flow feature, experiments were started early in 1914 with a view to developing an automatic equipment along the best lines of our past experience. The objects sought were: 1. Keeping labor out of the houses for hygienic reasons. 2. Reduction of labor costs. 3. Reduction in -size of hag houses. 4. Accessibility. 5. Ability to handle relatively hot gases where required.

SINCE the exposition of the behavior of certain iron alloys by Sykes1 involving the existence of an austenite loop and the discovery of such a loop in the chrome iron system by Bain,2 there has been much conjecture both on his part and on the part of metallurgists in general as to the exact shape and location of this loop. In previous work commercial steel has been used and the microscope has been employed to locate the critical points so that the position of the loop has been quite approximate. Numerous attempts have been made to measure the critical points of the carbon-free alloys but all of these for one reason or another have failed. A satisfactory method for studying these phenomena, is presented here. MATERIAL The first difficulty in this study was to obtain pure chromium-iron alloys. This has been overcome by melting in a vacuum electrolytic iron and chromium analyzing 99.84 Cr, Fe and C. A pure magnesite crucible was used and the melt allowed to solidify in the crucible. A typical analysis is chromium, 10.10 per cent., carbon, 0.006 per cent., silicon and manganese nil. To overcome the problem presented by segregation, ingots were made into wire 0.04 in. in diameter. This was accomplished by hand-forging the ingots into rods, using an oxyhydrogen flame for heating, in order to avoid carbon. Subsequently the rods were swaged too wire, the heating being carried out in hydrogen. Thus local segregation was eliminated although differences in analysis between portions 50 ft. apart were noted. An electric-resistance method was first tried to determine the critical points, but due to the physical defects in the wire this failed. Bain had previously shown the presence or absence of critical points in a qualitative way by observing the sag in a catenary. The author has devised the following method which gives an accurate determination of the critical points from expansion-temperature curves of suspended wire, a special telescopic dilatometer being used for the purpose.

"In the duplex melting process, chromium forms chromium spinels, the study of which will help to exploit the Hongge ores (rich in chromium) in the Panzhihua-Xichang area in China. Mimicked chromium slag was synthesized. The oxidation and decomposition mechanism of the Fe-Cr spinels contained was studied in a sodium roasting process. The effects of temperature, roasting time, amount of soda added and filling reagents were investigated. The leaching-reduction-precipitation-calcination procedure to extract Cr2CO3 was optimized. The results showed that the optimized roasting temperature was 1000~1020°C with a stoichiometric Na2CO3 addition and without any filling reagents. Roasted materials were leached with distilled water and were filtered to obtain a chromium-containing solution, which was adjusted to pH 1.60-1.80. A reducing reagent, NaHSO3, was added in a stoichiometric ratio and the solution was then adjusted to pH 7.25~8.25. Maximum Cr2O3 precipitation was obtained and the precipitate was calcined at 1050°C for 2h to obtain Cr2Ü3 with recovery rate over 96%.IntroductionChromium is widely applied in the metallurgical industry, in refractory materials and in the chemical industry with its particular properties of hardness, wear-resistance, high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance [1]. There is no free state of chromium in nature and chromite is the main chromium containing mineral [2], China is poor in chromium resources, despite its large demand, and there are few deposits of high grade of chromite ores except in some regions in Tibet and Xinjiang province [1, 4]. Hongge, one of largest titanomagnetite mines in Panzhihua-Xichang area, is a polymetallic deposit mainly containing iron and titanium; it is also associated with various beneficial elements such as chromium, copper, nickel, etc. [3]. As investigated in Reference 3, the chromium reserves of Hongge ores are so large that it is of great importance to study how to extract the chromium from them."

Although every mill-man of even limited experience in the amalgamation of gold-ores is probably aware that copper plates will in time become coated by the accumulation of gold-amalgam, it may be that many do not know to what extent this accumulation occurs in the treatment of ores dissimilar to those with which they are familiar, and under conditions foreign to those with which they have to contend in any given locality. The writer, therefore, feels relieved from the necessity of offering an apology for dealing with such an elementary subject, believing that certain facts in reference thereto, which have recently come under his personal observation, will be interesting to many, and possibly instructive to some persons engaged in the amalgamation of gold-ores. The facts hereinafter stated were observed in the 50-stamp "combination"-mill, owned by the Montana Mining Company, Limited, of England, operating the Drum Lummon mine, situated at Marysville, Montana. The material treated in this mill consists of quartz and ores of somewhat variable character, containing gold and silver in native form, as well as in chemical union with the sulphides of iron and copper. There is also present a little lead, some arsenic and antimony, and a little zinc. The last fair minerals, however, are of irregular occurrence, and but sparingly distributed throughout the ore, and yield only a trace in the analysis of the average material in this mill. The free gold, which is in a condition of fine division, and rarely visible to the naked eye, carries silver as an alloy; and the native silver, which is only occasionally observed, is present in the richer ores in wireand in leaf-form. Of the two precious metals, the ore worked during the past three years and ten months, the period under review, contained about 1/2-ounce of gold, and from 7 to 12 ounces of silver, per ton of 2000 pounds.

The term "survival" in the title means the preservation of a society in which men are free from the political and economic restraints that characterize totalitarian systems, be they communist, socialist or facist. It means the ability to withstand the enemy's offensives in the fields of propaganda, commercial competition and, if necessary, war. The temptation to substitute "victory" for "survival" is great but a realistic appraisal of the creeping socialism and demagoguery that pervade our time indicates that we may have to be content with survival in status quo. "Mineral strength" means assurance that adequate supplies will be available to meet all the contingencies of cold and hot wars. The overall mineral position of the U. S. viewed in the light of these premises is far from secure. It is true that we are the leading producing and consuming nation of the world, but the Soviet Union is gaining and the Sino-Soviet Bloc confronts us with a sobering potential. The emergence of the Common Market in Europe as an economic and political unit places a third independent entity into the competition. Our total mineral output continues on an up- ward trend but the reverse is true in certain strategic commodities. Moreover, consumption is moving ahead faster than production so that there is increasing dependence on imports which has significant adverse geopolitical connotations. There is widespread belief that our resources can at least maintain present levels of self-sufficiency during this critical period in world history, but social dreamers, the labor monopoly, and trade and taxation policies have discouraged aggressive activity in exploration and development, and access to essential foreign sources is threatened by a variety of circumstances. Our stockpiles, belatedly built up to achieve minimum protection against shortages in time of war, are under. political attack and threatened with partial destruction on the basis of what are at best uncertain assumptions regarding the new: look of global warfare.

With the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Canada, the United States and Mexico entered into an international experiment in economics amid a cloud of controversy that still lingers. Central to the controversy are the disparities in wages that exist among workers in the signing countries. Wage surveys completed by Western Mine Engineering show the degree of disparity that exists among the mining industries of those three countries. Labor costs constitute 30% to 50% of operating costs. So these wage differences are a matter of interest to the mining industry. It is unclear how much of a factor they are in determining where companies search for and develop new mines. That depends on where minable deposits are expected to be found. However, a deposit that may not be minable in the United States or Canada may be minable in Mexico because of lower labor costs. Some adjustments are anticipated for the Mexican mining industry if and when its wages begin to approach comparability with US and Canadian wages. Table 1 combines the results of four recent surveys. It lists benchmark wages for mining job titles common to all the countries. About 220 mines are covered by the combined surveys. Canadian miners' wages, converted to US dollars, are typically 75% to 95% of US wages, while Mexican miners' wages are less than 10% of those in the United States. Table 1 also shows that wage disparities are not confined to international borders. In fact, the difference in average wages between the US coal industry and the US metal and industrial mineral industries is greater than between the Canadian and the US mining industries overall. Table 2 shows that managerial, technical and administrative salaries show similar, but less pronounced differences among the three countries. Salaried personnel at Canadian mines earn 80% to 90% as much as their US counterparts, while those in Mexico earn 20% to 30% as much. Here again, average US coal salaries exceed average salaries for the US metal and industrial mineral industries.

Walter Renton Ingalls recently gave a very interesting talk before the student mining society of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In it he showed the present status of mining as he sees it. In the talk he explained that, while discoveries of great mining districts are still pssible, they are being made less and less often; that the great mining companies, although there are large numbers of mines offered for sale, are finding it less and less possible to find new mines that are up to the standard of richness that they wish for purchase. The natural conclusion is that better, cheaper, and more efficient methods of mining, concentrating, and smelting are needed if the lower-grade mines are to be worked at a profit. This is true also if the high-grade mines are to yield their greatest profit. This paper deals only with the concentrating or ore-dressing problem, and gives some thoughts which point towards greater profit. In a paper on The Development of Hindered-Settling Apparatus the writer showed that there were two main lines of work that would lead to greater saving, lower tailing assay, and, therefore, greater profit. The first is the recrushing of middling or tailing products for the saving of the contained values. This is well understood and largely carried out in existing mills. The second is the saving of fine free mineral at the first opportunity. This is a matter less well understood in the mills, and to dwell upon this the present paper is written. The writer is himself convinced and hopes to convince the reader that, for obtaining the above result, not only is better classification needed, but also more classification; that is, there should be more spigots or pockets to the classifier. His attention was recently called to a small mill which had a three-pocket cone classifier fed with from 2 to 0 mm. stuff, supplying feed to four Wilfley tables. The first spigot had about all the

In recent years, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling of mechanically stirred flotation cells has been used to study the complexity of the flow within the cells. In CFD modelling, the flotation cell is discretised into individual finite volumes where local values of flow properties are calculated. The flotation effect is studied as three subprocesses including collision, attachment and detachment. In the present work, these subprocesses are modelled in a laboratory flotation cell. The flotation kinetics involving a population balance for particles in a semi-batch process has been developed. From turbulent collision models, the local rates of bubble-particle encounters have been estimated from the local turbulent velocities. The probabilities of collision, adhesion and stabilisation have been calculated at each location in the flotation cell. The net rate of attachment, after accounting for detachments, has been used in the kinetic model involving transient CFD simulations with removal of bubble-particle aggregates to the froth layer. Comparison of the predicted fraction of particles remaining in the cell and the fraction of free particles to the total number of particles remaining in the cell indicates that the particle recovery rate to the pulp-froth interface is much slower than the net attachment rates. For the case studied, the results indicate that the bubbles are loaded with particles quite quickly, and that the bubble surface area flux is the limiting factor in the recovery rate at the froth interface. This explains why the relationship between flotation rate and bubble surface area flux is generally used as a criterion for designing flotation cells. The predicted flotation rate constants also indicate that fine and large particles do not float as well as intermediate sized particles of 120 - 240 ¦m range. This is consistent with the flotation recovery generally observed in flotation practice. The magnitude of the flotation rate constants obtained by CFD modelling indicates that transport rates of the bubble-particle aggregates to the froth layer contribute quite significantly to the overall flotation rate and this is likely to be the case especially in plant-scale equipment.

IN view of the immense amount of attention that silicosis has received in this country in the past few years, it is timely to review the status of the silicosis problem at present. Who gets silicosis? The individual exposed to the inhalation of free silica dust. The effects upon the individual depend upon the amount of silica inhaled or, in other words, the severity of exposure, rather than upon any special variation or susceptibility among those exposed. A considerable amount of study has been given to determine what may be the role of predisposing causes in the development of silicosis. To mention one instance, at the Picher Clinic careful records were kept of all previous illnesses of the men examined as well as abnormalities present at the time of examination. Examinations of over 27,000 miners were made during the years the clinic was conducted under governmental auspices-a very fair sized sample. The general conclusions from all this work were that the incidence of silicosis is not appreciably influenced by racial, structural, or other inherent qualities; it is influenced by acquired defects-particularly as these affect the lungs. That is to say, the average run of human beings respond similarly to similar exposures to silica dust and those whose lungs are already impaired by tuberculosis or other pulmonary disease acquire silicosis more readily than those with healthy lungs. It may well be, and there is some clinical evidence in support, that negroes acquire silicosis more readily than do whites, but the infection factor has not been so carefully studied among negroes exposed to silica as it has among whites. We know that tubercle infection is more prevalent among negroes than among whites. There may be other factors concerned in the development of silicosis in negroes as compared to whites, but there is not available information upon which to base positive statements. The following article covers the history of a metallurgical campaign, commenced in March, 1905, at the mines of the Socorro Bold Co., in the so-called desert region of Yuma county, Arizona. The results obtained were simply a function of necessity, as will be seen from the description of the local economic conditions and the character of the ores treated. The mines and mill of the Socorro Gold Co. are located near the small village of Harrisburg, about 60 miles from Congress Junction, Ariz., which, at the time this work was undertaken, was the nearest railroad station, and from which all supplies were brought by wagon through the desert, at a cost varying from $10 to $15 per ton in addition to the railroad freights. Wood, the only available fuel, cost $7 per cord. Water for all purposes was pumped to the plant from a well in the valley about 4 miles away. Under the Arizona law, a working-shift is 8 hr. Wages were $6 per day for foremen and mill-men, $4 per day for blacksmiths and engineers, $3.50 per day for miners, and $3 per day for shovelers and trammers. The ore consisted of quartz, in which, above the 250-ft. level, the iron-minerale were largely oxidized and some free gold was visible; below that level few traces of oxidation occurred, and pyrite constituted the principal mineralizer in the quartz, together with occasional pockets of galena and a few eccentric specks of covellite. The 20-stamp mill was equipped with plates for amalgamation, and three Standard tables for concentration. The tails from the tables mere elevated by a centrifugal pump to a launder, by which they were conveyed to a 60-ton cyanide-mill for further treatment. The cyanide-mill was erected at so great a distance from the stamp-mill that a separate crew of workers and a separate power-plant were necessary. The peculiar property of the lode-stone has been known for many centuries. It was very early observed that, by contact with it, iron is magnetized; and it is needless to dwell here upon the history allied to this discovery, now constituting the wonderful science of magnetism. Deposits of magnetic ore are distributed all over the world. The ore is sometimes very rich and comparatively free from gangue, sometimes sparsely disseminated in the native rock. These bodies of lean ore often cover large areas. Modern ingenuity has utilized the principle of the magrtet, originally derived from the ore itself, and really belonging to the time of Plato and Theophrastus, to separate the magnetic ore-particles from the rock which has previously been crushed. This process recovers the ore in the state of a concentrate very rich in iron and, in some cases, desirable for Bessemer purposes. The magnetic separator is no longer a novelty. It was only at the last meeting of the Institute in New York, that Messrs. Birkinbine and Edison (Trans., xvii., 728) and Mr. Robert Cook (Ib., 599) described some of' the principal designs of apparatus in use. E. S. Dana classifies the natural magnetic minerals in the following order: magnetite, pyrrhotite, franklinite, almandite and minerals " containing considerable FeO." Of these, ferroso-ferric oxide, or magnetite, is the type. The proportionate amount of ferrous oxide essential to magnetize the compound, is not established. Ferrous oxide appears to be the only magnetic oxide of iron. Tissandier (Compt. Rend., lxxiv., 531) produced ferrous oxide in the anhydrous state, by the action of carbon dioxide on pure iron at a red heat, according to the equation : Fe + CO2 = FeO + CO. This is black, crystalline and magnetic. Heated to redness in the air, it is converted into Fe3O4. Sidot (Compt. Rend., lxvii., 175) has also produced an oxide exhibiting magnetic polarity, by heating ferric oxide to a temperature

Gentlemen:-I herewith present a report on some of the more important activities of the Institute for the year 1921. The present incumbent took. over the active management of the Secretary's office on the first of July and his, work was facilitated, while becoming acquainted with the routine of the office, by the constant and., kindly assistance of the former, Secretary, Mr. Stoughton, during the following three months, and that no interruption occurred inn its regular and smooth operation is due to him and to the Assistant Secretary, who has always been ready to give the benefit of his experience and assistance. MINING AND METALLURGY Through the efforts of President Ludlow and the generous assistance of one of our members, coupled with the excellent work of Major Barbour, MINING AND METALLURGY has, during recent months, shown constant improvement, which could not have taken place, however, had it not been, for the support given by a number of our contributing members. We have every reason to feel encouraged with respect to the quality of the publication and its cost of production. For the year 1921, the net cost of MINING AND METALLURGY was about fifty cents per member, per annum. Occasional letters are received criticizing the Board for producing this publication, but they are more than offset by letters of approval. When the, full purpose of the publication is appreciated, criticism ceases. The elimination of MINING AND METALLURGY and reversion to free distribution of all papers to all members, whether desired or not, would mean such a heavy additional expense that the number of papers would have to be much curtailed. The generous cooperation of members in sending for only such papers as they particularly desired has saved, the Institute thousands of dollars. A plan is being worked out that will materially assist in securing a prompt distribution to members of all pamphlets dealing with subjects in which they are especially interested.
