This short note on the probable character of the organic sulfur compounds in coal can do no more than indicate lines of research. We have no new experimental work to describe, nothing comparable in value with the careful studies of American coals by Powell and Parrl and Yancey and Frazer. A study of the manner in which sulfur compounds exist in British coals (and their behavior on heat treatment) is rendered increasingly necessary by the fact that the British reserves of good coking coals of reasonably low sulfur content are fast being depleted. We believe that it is essentially by a study of the modes of formation, occurrence, and decomposition of the various types of inorganic and organic sulfur compounds in coal that it will be possible, with hope of success, to attack the problem of purifying coals, otherwise eminently suitable for coking, from these objectionable ingredients. Sulfur, so far as is at present known, does not normally occur in the free state in the coal conglomerate, but is chiefly distributed, irregularly, in three forms : 1. As primary constituents of the coal conglomerate, organic in nature and probably associated with those molecular complexes that have resulted from the degradation of the proteins of the plant tissues responsible for the formation of the coal mass. These constituents can be classed as "organic sulfur." 2. As metallic sulfides, e.g., iron pyrites. 3. As metallic sulfates, e.g., calcium sulfate and ferrous sulfate. (The occurrence of these compounds varies with the occurrence and degree of degradation of class 2.) It is usually found that sulfur compounds of class 3, the metallic sulfates, are present in coal in small proportions only, amounting to about 1 or 1.5 per cent. of the total sulfur. The Grasberg copper-gold deposit was discovered in the spring of 1988, one year before the planned closure of Freeport Indonesia's original Ertsberg openpit copper mine. In spite of Grasberg's remote location, 600 m (1968 ft) above the Ertsberg, atop a hitherto inaccessible mountain, Freeport-McMoRan brought its latest open-pit mine into production in the last week of 1989, less than two years after discovery. Freeport Indonesia's (FI) copper-gold mining operations are located in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of Indonesia on the western side of the island of New Guinea. Fl's six ore deposits are all located within a 10- x 10-km' (3.9- x 3.9-sq mile) Contract of Work area. They are all between the elevations of 2900 and 4300 m (9515 and 14,100 ft) above sea level, some 96 km (60 miles) from the island's southern coast. A 118-km (74-mile) access route connects FT's port site of Amamapare on the Arafura Sea to the project area. The first section is an 18-km (11-mile) barge waterway. The final 100-km (63mile) is a two-lane gravel highway. The highway terminates 9 km (5.5 miles) beyond the FI townsite at the project's central mill, some 2850 m (9250 ft) above sea level. The mining areas are separated from the mill by a 780-m (2560-ft) sheer cliff face. The world's longest free span tramway system, with a total length of more than 1.6 km (1 mile), is the only means of access for men and materials between the mill and the surface mines. Weight restrictions for the tramway for equipment considered for the project are 15.4 t (17 st). The minimum clear width dimension of two tunnels along the portsite access road is 5.6 m (18.4 ft).

The mine and milling plant of Demonstration Gold Mines, Ltd., is near the city limits of Baguio, Mt. Province, P. I. The mine road connects with the main highway to Manila. The nearest railway point is near sea level, approximately 40 miles distant. The Baguio district is very mountainous and has one of the heaviest rainfalls in the world. It is therefore difficult to maintain roads or to impound tailings and mine dumps. All supplies are trucked into the district direct from Manila or the nearest railway point, which means uncertain deliveries and high freight rates. Installation of equipment is difficult and costly. The average elevation at the mine is 4000 ft. and the climatic conditions are ideal except for a three months rainy season. The company generates its own power for mining and milling operations with three 400-hp. Ruston Diesel engines direct connected to 250-kw. General Electric alternating current generators. Labor conditions have been excellent, although at present social security laws are causing some unrest. Labor receives a higher average wage rate in this district than other labor in the Islands. The company also furnishes free living quarters, hospitalization and workmen's compensation. Taxation has been reasonable up to the present time, but some of the new mining legislation may make it difficult to operate and pay dividends. The future depends largely upon the continuation of $35 gold and the political outcome in the Islands. History The Demonstration ore body was worked by the Igorots for many years, as evidenced by old stopes and fill encountered in present operations. Attention of Americans was first attracted soon after the Spanish-American war. During the building of the Benguet road to Baguio, the engineers and foreman became interested in the geology of the district.

Unusual problems have arisen at certain iron blast-furnaces in Virginia through the fact that the ore-supplies, derived from the Oriskany formation, contain from a trace up to 1 per cent, of zinc oxide. Since the technical literature bearing on this subject is very scant, the following notes, based on personal experience, will probably be of value to those of our members who are interested in iron blast-furnace practice. The course of zinc through the blast-furnace is readily traced. Entering the throat as zinc oxide, finely dissemiuated through the ore, it descends unchanged to the fusion-zone, since a temperature of 1,000" C. or more is required for its reduction. At the fusion-zone, the zinc oxide is reduced by solid carbon to metallic zinc, which is set free as vapor and rises with the ascending gases to the cooler zones of the furnace. In cooling through the range of temperature from 1,000" to 500° C. the zinc is re-oxidized according to the reaction Zn + CO2 = ZnO + CO, and the resulting zinc oxide, being in a very fine state of division, is readily carried along by the ascending gases. Portions, however, deposit on the descending stock and are carried down, again to pass through the same cycle of changes. Still other portions deposit on the lining of the stack, and gradually form hard masses of "cadmia." Of the remainder of the zinc oxide, the greater part passes out of the furnace, and is either deposited in the down-comer, dust-trap, stoves, boilers and flues, or passes through the chimney into the atmosphere. A small portion escapes reduction and enters the slag as zinc oxide, while still another portion is absorbed into the lining of the furnace.

THE requirements of the standard specifications under which Portland cement is sold have materially increased within the past 10 years, but practically all companies are now furnishing cement better than these requirements; in some cases exceeding them by nearly 100 per cent. From a sales standpoint, it is desirable to have a product that is uniform to a high degree and free from occasional quality troubles. A failure in quality, even if it affects only a few hundred barrels out of a yearly output of a million or more, is apt to be talked about in the trade and to affect the salability of the entire output. For these reasons, there has recently been great activity along the lines of quality control and improvement; and some of the most interesting problems of the industry are in this field. From the manufacturing standpoint, the quality of cement is chiefly a matter of uniform and proper chemical composition of the raw mix fed to the kilns plus proper burning in the kilns; the fineness to which the cement is ground, the proportions of gypsum, the method of seasoning, and the like are contributory factors. Uniform chemical composition of the raw mix has been one of the most difficult problems to solve. Most plants will use from 1000 to 3000 tons of rock per day and in but few cases is this material as it lies in the quarry even approximately uniform in composition. The problem, then, is to quarry and mix this raw material in such a manner that every handful passing through the kilns will have practically the same analysis as every other handful. To accomplish this purpose there are two methods of preparation: the wet process and the dry.

Mooranbah North is a new greenfield project in Australia's Bowen Basin that is projected to produce 4 mtpa of hard coking coal from a single longwall. Located in Central Queensland in Australia's northeast, this is one of Australia's main coal producing regions. From the outset, Mooranbah North's approach to equipment selection has differed markedly from that usually taken in the mining industry, and the conveyor industry in particular. Until recently, no performance requirements have been placed on conveyor equipment suppliers. This arose from a practice of purchasing components in an ad-hoc manner from a variety of sources, and the mine then configuring the system. More recently, single source supply has been adopted as a means of obtaining some performance guarantee, usually expressed in terms of system availability. Unfortunately, the term "availability" has a multitude of definitions, particularly in the underground coal sector. A conveyor availability of 98% is a common goal but this rarely means the conveyor must operate 165 hours/week, 52 weeks/year. There are mines that have one maintenance shift for each production shift and claim availability of 100%. What is meant is that no down time is logged to the conveyor during the hours that it is wanted. This "generous" definition of availability would not be tolerated in many industries and nor should it. Unfortunately, a true definition of availability, such as is applied to steam turbines in the power generation industry, is not particularly helpful. Five day/ week operations would immediately face a 28% penalty against 7 day rosters, and there would be no sensible manner in which weekend maintenance could be incorporated into the availability formula. The approach adopted by Mooranbah North was to specify a period of "Failure Free Operation," which would be followed by a maintenance period. This

THE formation of ferrite in supersaturated aus-tenite has been the subject of considerable speculation and investigation. Aaronson has recently reviewed the data pertinent to this reaction.' Since these data in all cases refer to ternary or high-order alloys it is not possible to put them to the test of simple binary diffusion formalism. It has not, therefore, been possible to make a certain statement as to the controlling mechanisms in the process. An assessment of the difficulties inherent in the conventional statistical metallographic approach suggested that a study of the problem by means of a macroscopic two-phase diffusion couple might contribute useful information. Accordingly, such a couple was synthesized, and the rate of motion of a ferrite-austenite phase boundary (the growth of an austenite layer at the expense of a ferrite layer) was determined. Wagner originally produced a diffusion solution applicable to the motion of a planar phase interface in a binary diffusion couple, assuming local equilibrium throughout the diffusion zone. This solution, which is stated free of typographical error* in Ref. where a is the position of the interface in A space (A = x/fi), C; and CL1 are the equilibrium inter-facial concentrations in phases I and 11, C: and C*1 are the initial bulk concentrations in phases I and 11, and & and are diffusion coefficients (assumed constant). If a diffusion couple consisting of homogeneous layers of ferrite and austenite in equilibrium is raised to a higher temperature, the austenite layer will grow at the expense of the ferrite. "The Sigma gold deposit is in a band of deformed metavolcanic rocks that are cut by an irregular mass of porphyritic diorite and by narrow undeformed feldspar porphyry dykes. The gold is in veins consisting mainly of quartz and tourmaline with minor pyrite, carbonate, chlorite, scheelite and free gold. The results presented here concern the structural setting of the ore and are based on a study of the mode of emplacement.Two principal types of veins have been recognized: subvertical and oblique veins. Both types are contemporaneous, mechanically linked and postdate regional deformation. The sub-vertical veins are composed of numerous mineralized lenses that occupy the central part of ductile shear zones of great lateral and vertical extent. Normally, several lenses occur in the same shear zone. The vein material seems to have resulted from incremental filling of openings by repeated vertical movement along rupture planes developed in the central part of the shear zones.The oblique veins are small elliptical lenses of ribboned vein material which formed essentially by progressive vertical opening of oblique fractures. Two types of oblique veins are known: one is restricted to feldspar porphyry dykes, within which they are arranged in an en-echelon fashion; the other is of greater extent and is not restricted to one rock type, but tends, however, to occur in the more competent porphyritic diorite.Vein orientation and mode of formation suggest that both sub-vertical and oblique veins developed during progressive deformation associated with the formation of the ductile shear zones. The latter probably formed in response to a compression that took place late in the tectonic history of the host rocks at Sigma."

A. U. Seybolt (General Electric Research Laboratory)— As pointed out in an earlier paper,41 it appears to be very difficult to nucleate Si3N4 in Si-Fe of silicon content up to around 5 pet. Therefore, one observes, as did Pearce, that equilibrations with nitrogen gas yield only nitrogen in solid solution at temperatures above about 700°C, or, as Pearce found, 770°C. Evidently, the free energy of formation of Si3N4 only becomes high enough at -770°C to overcome the reluctance of Si3N4 to nucleate. However, as mentioned in Ref. 41, if some Si3N4 is first formed by a mixture of ammonia and hydrogen, one can then replace this gas mixture by nitrogen gas, and either increase or decrease the amount of Si3N4 present at any temperature by suitable adjustment of nitrogen pressure: that is, to equilibrate with Si3N4. In the equilibration experiments cited in Ref. 41, equilibrium was approached from both sides, and it was found that samples up to 944oC, at least, were in equilibrium with Si3N4. Higher temperatures were not employed, as this would have necessitated a redesign of the apparatus for using nitrogen pressures in excess of 1 atm. To summarize, the results of Pearce's experiments and those of Ref. 41 cannot be directly compared because two quite different equilibria were studied. Therefore, the statement by Pearce on p. 1398 indicating apparent error in Ref. 41 is unjustified. M. L. The Endako, British Columbia, deposit was initially discovered in 1927 by two local men, Charles H. Foote and Alf Lagdon, who were at that time on a hunting expedition. Four mineral claims were located to cover an area of quartz-molybdenite float that was centered on two small ridges. They subsequently uncovered a 0.5-m (1.6-ft) wide vein on which an inclined shaft was sunk to a depth of 8.3 m (27.2 ft) in 1934. Additionally, a short adit was driven to intersect another vein. Numerous trenches and small pits were also dug. Small test shipments of vein material from this early work were sent to G.S. Eldridge and Co. in Vancouver for metallurgical testing. A concentrate assaying 89.2% MoS, was produced with a recovery reported as 93.3%. The concentrate was essentially free of copper, arsenic, and phosphate. The property was examined by many geologists and engineers during 1934 to 1952, but the only work done was undertaken by the owners in order to maintain their claims in good standing. In 1952, Kennco Explorations (Canada) Ltd. carried out a limited program of bulldozer trenching, sampling, and geological mapping before relin- quishing their option. In 1956, American Standard Mines Ltd. acquired an option on the property, but no assessment work was apparently recorded and the property was allowed to lapse. The key claims were restaked in 1959 by C. Riley and H.T. James of Vancouver. The property was optioned from the new owners by Andrew Robertson in July 1961, and a small amount of trenching was conducted. Robertson, on behalf of his own company, R & P Metals Corp., reoptioned the property in January 1962. The initial results of this work were favorable and justified further exploration. The additional finances required to continue the program resulted in the formation of Endako Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) on June 21, 1962. THE accuracy of the silver-assay depends in great measure upon a careful regulation of the heat of the muffle during the process of cupellation. At the beginning of the operation, a relatively high temperature is required to " open " the lead buttons, that is, to clear off the black film of oxide that covers the surface of the metal button immediately after fusion has taken place. The muffle is usually closed up until the buttons are uncovered. As soon as a clear, free surface of molten metal is exposed to the oxidizing action of the air, the temperature should immediately be lowered to the minimum temperature at which the formation and absorption of litharge can progress freely, and the buttons still be kept from " freezing." The process, under satisfactory conditions, will be characterized by the formation of rings of litharge crystals (" feathers," as they are styled), on the cupel, about the oxidizing globule; and the nearer these rings of litharge crystals call be made to approach the central oxidizing globule without interfering with the freedom of oxidation and absorption, the smaller will be the volatilization of silver, and consequeiltly the greater the degree of accuracy attained. This minimum heat must be maintained uniformly during the oxidation of the lead; and just as the last of the lead is disappearing, and the button is preparing to l blick," the temperature of the muffle should be allowed to rise so that the last traces of lead will be driven off. This regulation of the heat calls into play all the skill of the assayer, and requires a vigilant eye, able to distirlguish between the slightest variations of temperature of the muffle, assisted by a nice adjustment of fuel and draft. With a few cupels in the muffle at one time, the proper heat for each cupel can be maintained by roughly approximating the proper temperature, and then moving the cupels backward and forward in the muffle; but this is gene-

Introduction Inorganic depressants are chemicals added to the froth flotation process to maintain or produce hydrophylic surfaces on one or more minerals so they will remain in the pulp rather than attach to the air bubbles. Whether a depressant will be effective in depressing a given mineral depends on how it is used and the environment in which it is used. Some depressants must be added and conditioned into the pulp before the collector is added. Other depressants can be added in the presence of previously added collectors and effectively depress the desired minerals. Often the concentration of depressant relative to the collector concentration is critical to making an economic separation. It should be noted that some depressants will only work when specific collectors have been used. Some reagents such as sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide essentially act as depressants by altering the previously added collectors so that they are no longer effective. Some depressants such as sodium ferrocyanide are only effective in a very limited pH range and an essentially collector free environment. Major Depressants CaO Milk of Lime is by far the most used depressant both in tonnage and dollar value. Although it is most commonly listed as a pH modifier, it is also an important depressant for pyrite in copper and copper molybdenite flotation plants. Although a simple pH adjustment will often depress pyrite, there are times when grinding with fresh milk of lime is required to obtain optimum depression. Lime is also a molybdenite and gold depressant. NaSH Sodium hydrosulfide is by far the most commonly used reagent to depress copper and iron sulfide minerals in by-product molybdenite flotation plants. NaSH also depresses gold, silver sulfides and silver chloride. ZnSO4 Zinc sulfate is commonly used to depress sphalerite in lead-zinc and copper-lead- zinc flotation plants. It has also been used to effectively depress talc in by-product molybdenite circuits at a pH of 6.5.

The Päijänne Tunnel is being constructed to conduct raw water from Lake Päijänne to the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. The length of the tunnel will be 120 km and the cross-sectional area is 15.5 sq m. Excavation started in 1973 and will be completed in 1982. 94 km of the tunnel have been constructed from Lake Päijänne towards Helsinki. The construction has advanced according to plan, and due to Finland's hard bedrock there have not been any great surprises. When completed, the tunnel will meet the water requirements of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area for a long time in the future because, with a free fall of 36 m, 9.6 cu m/s of water can be conducted through the tunnel from Lake Päijänne to the Helsinki Area. With pumping it will be possible to obtain a flow of 15 cu m/s, although at first the discharge will only be 5 cu m/s. The tunnel was partly taken into service as early as March 1979 when it was possible to conduct water to the municipalities north of the Helsinki Area. It is already possible now to conduct water to Helsinki, too, but from the Korpimäki pumping station onwards it must be done through the River Vantaa, which is polluted. When the tunnel is completed in 1982, good quality water can be conducted from Lake Päijänne to the Helsinki Metropolitan Area through a continuous rock tunnel. The cost estimate in 1973 was $ 88 million while it is now $ 90 million notwithstanding high inflation. AREAS NEEDED FOR CONSTRUCTION The areas needed for construction were bought through voluntary deals. Areas of 4 - 5 hectares were bought along the tunnel line at about 5 km intervals. The excavation of access tunnels was started from these places, and the crushed rock from the main tunnel was also transported there. However, it was not necessary to buy the area

INTEREST in the reserves of phosphate rock in the United States and their proper conservation has recently been aroused by hearings held in different parts of the country by the "Joint Committee to investigate the adequacy and use of phosphate resources of the United States." This committee was appointed within a few days after a Presidential message to Congress on the same subject, dated May 20, 1938, and began to function almost immediately. Hearings were held in Washington, D. C., Pocatello, Ida., Wilson Dam, Ala., Knoxville, Tenn., and Lakeland, Fla. The resulting testimony, when published, comprised a volume of 1182 pages.1 At the earlier hearings held in Washington and Idaho the seeming disparity between the great reserves of the West and the smaller reserves in the East led to some suggestions as to the desirability of curtailing or even prohibiting the exportation of phosphate rock so that eastern producers, becoming alarmed, cooperated in making available for the use of the committee information hitherto closely guarded. This information has provided an opportunity for new studies by official agencies, for a restatement of the reserves of Florida and Tennessee, and for some modification of figures for the Western States. The writer, representing the Federal Geological Survey, was given free access to the Florida material and has prepared for publication a report,2 some features of which are summarized in this paper. The Tennessee material was studied by Dr. G. I. Whitlatch,3 of the Tennessee Division of Geology. Prof. J. Stewart Williams,4 of the Utah State Agricultural College at Logan, has published a recent study of the phosphate resources of Utah and the writer has given some further study to reserves of western phosphate from the viewpoint of including material of lower grade than that hitherto considered. THE importance, to geologists and metallurgists, of knowing the mineralogical forms in which the silver occurs in ores has increased during the past few years, and will continue to increase as long as working hypotheses are converted into proved theories and rule of thumb methods are supplanted by scientific data. The methods used for the determination of these silver minerals have been: (1) careful study of polished ore sections with the microscope, and more recently, (2) metallurgical separation of the ground ore by flotation, tabling and panning, supplemented by microscopic examination of these separated minerals, and chemical analyses. During the course of some experimental work carried on by the testing department of the International Smelting Co. and myself, it became important to determine, in a general way, the distribution of the silver values in the minerals, as they exist in Tintic Standard and North Lilly siliceous oxidized lead-silver ores. These mines are in the East Tintic Mining District, State of Utah. In this work the second method was used. Differential flotation tests were run, separating the sulfide from the oxidized minerals, and the products were assayed. Various concentrates were carefully panned and the separated products assayed; special samples of ore were selected and assayed. The microscope was used only for the purpose of determin; ing whether the individual minerals were in the so-called "free" state. Analysis of Tintic Ores These chemical and mineralogical determinations showed the silver to be present as native silver, argento jarosite, argentite, and combined or inherent in the tetrahedrite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, cerussite, anglesite, mimetite, malachite, iron oxide and occluded in the quartz. Careful microscopic work would probably show other forms in small amounts, such as the halide silver minerals and some of the antimony sulfide combinations. The tabulation of the analyses of the various products (Table 1) shows no evidences of fixed ratios of silver to any particular base metal.

About 60 persons are admitted to the graduate course every year after passing the entrance examinations. The entire course of studies is free of charge and the universities provide accommodation for the students who need it. The five years of studies are divided into 10 semesters. One semester lasts 15 weeks. Automatics can be studied at three separate faculties. At the University of Mining and Metallurgy, it is offered by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics and Electronics as well as the Faculty of Mining and Metallurgical Machines (metrology can also be studied there); at the Silesian Technical University in Gliwice, the Faculty of Mining offers the course. The educational plans and programmes comprise 3 groups of subjects: common for a given course of studies (foreign languages, political science and the basic technical knowledge) common for the speciality and subjects of diploma courses. The whole time of studies covers about 4400 hours excluding 3 periods of professional training and the physical training. The classes, laboratory classes, seminars and design classes are obligatory and the attendance is strictly checked. Students may extend their knowledge by participating and working in the Science Clubs. The students' work is checked not only during the classes but also by the examinations held at'the end of respective semesters. Those who fail the exams can repeat them only if very important reasons are presented. At the very end of the studies there is a diploma examination together with a discussion on the diploma thesis, written by the student. The successful result entitles the student to recieve the title of "magister inzynier",M.Sc. of his speciality. The graduates, after working for 2 years, can attend another course of studies lasting 2 semesters and called "Postgraduate Course", or start "Doctoral Studies" finished by the defence of a doctor's thesis. In'these cases the expenses are usually covered by the graduates' employers.

A joint meeting of the New York Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers was held in the large auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building, 29 West 39th Street, on Friday evening, Apr. 4, 1913, and an exhibition of the Edison Talking Moving Pictures was presented before the Societies, together with exhibitions of the work which is being done by the Edison Co. in making moving pictures to illustrate lectures on natural science and the useful arts for school and college work. Introductory remarks were made by Mr. J. W. Lieb, Jr., and followed by an exhibition of moving pictures illustrating the formation of crystals, the operation of different types of pumps, magnetic forces, electro-magnetic separation of iron ore, the evolution of the fly, and many other most interesting studies. One of the films, entitled The Formation of Crystals, showed a moving picture of a boy, whose laboratory was the kitchen, dissolving salt in a test tube filled with hot water. The boy then poured the solution of hot salt into a watch glass and placed it under the microscope to watch the crystals form. This film was immediately followed by another showing what the boy saw through the microscope. The solution at first was free from crystals. Gradually the crystals commenced to form and increased very rapidly after once starting, shooting across the screen with lightning speed. The film illustrating the separation of iron ores by the Edison electro-magnet showed an ore bin with an electro-magnet set at one side and below the bin. As the ore was dropped from the bin the magnetite was drawn into the. electric field and deposited in a separate rile from the sand.

The Campbell gold operation of Placer Dome Inc. produces an arsenopyrite-sulfide concentrate that must be treated by roasting, biooxidation or pressure oxidation to obtain high gold recoveries. Pressure oxidation is a proven process that also meets Ontario's stringent environmental regulations. A comparison of biooxidation and pressure oxidation was completed early in 1990. Placer Dome selected pressure oxidation as the preferred process to replace the roaster. The commercial plant design was based on technology supplied by Sherritt Gordon. In July of 1991, the existing roaster operation was shut down and a new pressure oxidation plant was commissioned. The Campbell Red Lake Mine, in Balmertown in northwestern Ontario, is the first plant in Canada to use Sherritt Gordon's pressure oxidation technology to recover gold from a refractory ore body. A similar process has been used at Sao Bento in Brazil since 1986. The Porgera complex in Papua New Guinea also uses Sherritt's technology. At the Campbell Mine, gold occurs as either free gold or is encapsulated with sulfide minerals, mainly arsenopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite. These sulfide species are recovered from the ore by crushing and grinding to 80% -75. µm (200 mesh), followed by flotation. About 40% of the gold in the ore is recovered by gravity separation. The remainder reports to the ground slurry feed to flotation. The flotation concentrate averages about 55 to 60 t/d (60 to 66 stpd). A typical analysis is shown in Table 1. Before the installation of the pressure oxidation plant, the flotation concentrate was treated in a two-stage, fluid bed roasting circuit. Roaster off-gases passed through two parallel sets of cyclones, followed by electrostatic precipitators. Arsenic trioxide was captured in a four-chamber baghouse before the gas was discharged to a stack. The arsenic trioxide was sold or conveyed to an underground storage vault. The roasted calcine was fed to a gravity separation circuit and then subjected to cyanide leaching. Gold was recovered from the filtered leach solution in a Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation circuit.
