IT is difficult to judge how much influence the success attained during its first year, 1864-65, by the School of Mines at Columbia had on developments in education for the mineral industry elsewhere in the immediately subsequent years. The facts are as follows: 1. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology began giving instruction in February 1865, with a mining course included in its curriculum. 2. Early in 1865 the faculty of the Department of Science, Literature and the Arts of the University of Michigan requested permission from the Regents to establish "a course of study to be called the School of Mines . . . Also that the degree of Mining Engineering, be conferred on students who should complete the course of study prescribed in the same." A resolution authorizing this was adopted by the Regents on March 28, 1865. 3. Samuel Hooper endowed a Sturgis-Hooper professorship of geology at Harvard in 1865 with the intention of making it a nucleus of a new School of Practical Mining and Geology. 4. Yale appointed Alfred P. Rockwell professor of mining in 1865. 5. Lafayette College appointed Henry S. Osborn professor of mining and metallurgy in 1865. 6. Washington College (as Washington and Lee was then known), rising out of the ashes of Civil War destruction, made a fresh start in 1865, with Generalized as its president, and offered a mining course in the first catalogue thereafter published. 7. Lehigh University, founded in 1866, had a mining curriculum from its beginning. 8. Rensselaer Polytechnic began offering a curriculum in mining and metallurgical engineering in 1867. Among the known iron deposits in Canada, many are of low grade and require beneficiation to produce an acceptable blast-furnace feed. Some of the deposits have never been considered for commercial exploitation due to the lack of a suitable concentrating process. A number of deposits of this type are located in Northern Ontario. The problem in upgrading these deposits is three fold. Firstly, the iron occurs as a mixture of magnetite and hematite. Secondly, the grain size of the material can be fine to very fine. Thirdly, the complex mixture of gangue minerals, which consists invariably of silica, flaky silicates and carbonates, slimes excessively on fine grinding. Algoma's efforts to concentrate these iron-bearing materials culminated in the development of a "Selective Flocculation and Desliming Process" employing slimes removal as the sole beneficiation technique. The process was applied successfully in the laboratory using two stages of grinding and a total of seven deslimings. Prior to the removal of slimes, the iron-bearing fines were selectively flocculated from a thoroughly dispersed pulp using a modified starch as flocculant, Sodium silicate was employed as dispersant. An attempt was made to optimize some of the process variables using material from one specific iron formation near the town of Geraldton in Northern Ontario. The preparation of the starch proved most critical. This matter, and the method used to evaluate the degree of breakdown of the starch molecule, are therefore discussed in some detail.

In many mineral processing operations, the reported production figures for an accounting period may not make the best use of available data. While most of the mathematical approaches, such as check-in/check-out, mass balancing, used in effective metallurgical accounting strategies are well understood, the sources and magnitude of measurement errors generally are not. As part of the æAMIRA P754-Metal Accounting and ReconciliationÆ project, a study was undertaken at the Northparkes copper/gold concentrator near Parkes, New South Wales to examine the data used in their concentrator metallurgical accounting system. This paper summarises the results of a detailed examination of the mass measurement systems around the concentrator as well as the primary sampling system used for grade estimation. The goal of this work was to develop practical techniques to quantify the error (ie both accuracy and precision) of the measured metal accounting information. With this information, statistical confidence levels for this data can then be calculated. If the errors are small, the effect of error in each piece of measured data can then be propagated to other calculated production figures such as recovery and feed grade using a statistical technique called æthe propagation of errorÆ.

The South Nottinghamshire Area has not been greatly troubled by spontaneous combustion until the last few years, during which the Blackshale Seam has been developed and exploited. The problem was first encountered at a colliery which was heavily preoccupied with a major reconstruction scheme, and with the sudden appearance of a completely new hazard both men and management had to adapt themselves very quickly to meet the situation. The paper contributed to the Symposium by the South Nottinghamshire Area illustrates the problems by reference to actual incidents, and shows how the lessons learned from them have been applied to the shaping of future policy on the avoidance and treatment of spontaneous combustion.

A study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate natural gas as an automotive fuel and to provide guidelines for optimum engine adjustments for low exhaust emissions. The study was conducted using a single-cylinder engine, a multicylinder engine, and a total of eight vehicles. Results from single-cylinder engine tests showed that the light-load, lean-limit misfire region for natural gas begins at an air-fuel ratio between 150 and 160 pct of stoichiometric. Changes in ignition timing significantly influenced emissions of nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons, but had little effect on carbon monoxide emission. Low emissions can be achieved with current-design engines by adjustment of engine parameters, but only with heavy penalty to engine performance. Emissions from vehicles fueled with natural gas are virtually unaffected by ambient temperature change within the range 20° to 100° F. The organic emissions from engines fueled with natural gas were estimated to be 22 to 25 pct as reactive as the emissions produced using gasoline. Levels of exhaust emissions from vehicles fueled with natural gas were unchanged over 10,000 miles of normal driving.

The Bureau of Mines t.ced its investigations into sympathetic detonation of ammonium nitrate (AN) and ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to define the scaling law for safe separation from detonating AN-FO. Both missile- and non-missile-producing AN-FO donors, weighing up to 5,400 pounds, were employed with acceptors of the same size. The usual cube-root scaling law was not confirmed; exponents for the relationship S = f(Wx) for AN were 0.51 with non¬missile-producing donors and 0.61 for missile-producing donors. For AN-FO an exponent of 0.80 was indicated in the missile-producing case. AN-F0 in polyethylene bags appeared somewhat more easily initiated than bulk AN-FO. The efficacy of barricades in protecting AN charges was investigated. detonation distances were reduced from one-third to one-seventh when filled barricades were employed. The investigation was extended to dynamite with both types of donors. With 1,600-pound missile-producing donors and an equivalent weight of dynamite, initiation would be expected in 50 percent of the trials at 167 feet. The corresponding value in the non-missile case was 67 feet. The data developed in this program of sympathetic detonation will allow the development of a rational set of safe separation distances for AN, AN-FO, and explosives.

In open pit blasting, energy is released and transmitted through the geology. Negative effects can impact operations and can affect mine production. This paper presents recommendations for blast design to prevent damage due to ground motion from blasting on adjacent concrete structures of underground operations. It includes a case study describing a problem regarding an open pit mine expansion and asks whether production blasting will damage concrete shaft structures due to blast stress waves and blast-induced ground motion.

1. In the United States, the industrial application of centrifugal force for separating phase constituents has been confined almost entirely to aqueous systems at room temperature. This paper presents results for experimental tests on the use of centrifugal force for separating the liquid and solid phases in molten nonferrous alloys. 2. The development and use of a small centrifuge for treating molten metals is described. The centrifugal apparatus was, in essence, a 3-inch diameter spinner pot, which revolved, within -a gas -fired furnace, at speeds up to 3,000 r.p.m.

In preparing this paper, an attempt was made to obtain results of plant-scale carbonization tests on washed and unwashed coal from the same mine. A letter. in which the following questions were asked was sent to some 50 coke-oven superintendents and others who might be interested; "What is the influence of washing coal on: (1) The chemical and physical properties of coke, as for example, the size the amount of breeze, the fracture, strength, cell-structure, etc. (2) The quantity and quality of gas and by-products. (3) The capacity of the ovens. (4) The composition of the coal. "Your general opinion, as well as any specific data or results of tests, on this important subject will be arc greatly appreciated."

Information presented herein was gathered by examination of 29 fluidized- bed thermal coal dryers and by conferences with manufacturers and users of such equipment to determine what safety features could be incorporated in design, installation, and operation to minimize fire and explosion hazards. Fire and explosion hazards are inherent in certain types of coal dryers in that high temperatures are employed; the sizes and volatility of material handled are capable of propagating explosions; and drying gases are seldom, if ever, low enough in oxygen content to prevent ignitions of dust clouds, distilled gases, or their combinations. This is especially true for fluidized- bed dryers in which the coal is dried in air suspension and in which atmospheric air is constantly introduced to temper the heated furnace gases. Occurrence of fires on heated bedplates, in dust collectors, and in hot gas inlets was common in nearly all the dryers examined. Forceful explosions which produced external effects had occurred in 11 (39 percent), and internal "puffs" or "bumps" had occurred in at least 24 (79 percent) of the plants examined in the study.

"SynopsisGoing beyond transformation claims contained in employment equity scorecards and industry compliance reports, this article provides qualitative insight into the initiatives employed and challenges experienced by mining companies in a quest to transform the mining industry. Perceptions expressed during in-depth interviews with 10 senior executives showed that the assumption that mining companies are reluctant to transform is erroneous. Results from this study suggest buy-in and commitment to transformation. This article describes specific initiatives undertaken by mining companies to transform. The most notable initiatives include staff recruitment efforts to appoint historically disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs), staff development initiatives, as well as community development. The findings furthermore contextualize the challenges experienced by industry participants in their quest to transform. Despite accusations that industry participants are not taking responsibility for the implementation of the transformation agenda, government needs to recognize that they too have a role to play and need to appreciate and assist in the current challenges experienced by the industry.IntroductionWe need a mining sector that works. Mining employs over half a million people. It is the biggest earner of foreign exchange in our country. It also contributes about 20 billion rand directly to tax revenue. Mining also makes a far larger contribution as a buyer of goods and services, and a supplier of inputs to other sectors of our economy and other economies around the globe’ said President Jacob Zuma during the 2014 State of the Nation Address (Zuma, 2014). However, despite apparent commitment from government, enforced compliance with social and labour plans, regulations and Mining Charter targets, the South African mining industry is slow to gain local and international investor trust (Deloitte & Touche, 2013; Mashego, 2013).Industry players acknowledge that their context has changed – creating various challenges (Davis, 2014). In the past few years, such challenges included subdued commodity prices, increased working costs, constrained infrastructure, and high labour costs, coupled with poor levels of productivity, strained labour-management relations, an uncertain regulatory environment, and the inevitable maturation of the industry (Deloitte & Touche, 2013; Davenport, 2014). Mining affected communities also became more cognisant of their rights, and politicians more vocal in their expectations from their relationships with the mining giants (Davis, 2014). One of the main issues that contributed to the difficult operating conditions was claims from organized labour and Minister Shabangu that this industry is too slow to transform. Specific claims were made in terms of employment equity, fair salaries and wages for mineworkers, housing and living conditions, health and safety issues, and general working conditions (Limpitlaw et al., 2005; Miningmx, 2013; Shabangu, 2010). These claims were followed by what Gill Marcus, Reserve Bank Governor, explained as ‘unprotected strike action [that] has escalated into an uncontrolled, violent and unlawful landscape, led by a mob mentality in the absence of formal and recognised leaders’ (Mavuso,2013)."

THE potential oil-and gas-bearing area with "which this paper deals is the large undefined Carboniferous basin, roughly triangular in shape, occupying about 10,000 square miles of southern and eastern New Brunswick. Its base, about 135 miles long, lies on the gulf of St. Lawrence and embraces the whole eastern coast-line of the Province, while its apex lies in the south-west corner of the Province, near the International boundary (see map, Figure 1). The Carboniferous basin may be divided roughly into two areas-the Northern basin and the Southern basin-by a structural feature represented by a ridge of low hills running north-easterly from the Saint John river, near Saint John, on the southwest, to Indian mountain, about eight miles north of Moncton, in the northeast. Within the Northern basin, all evidence regarding the presence or attitude of the older Mississippian Albert Shale series, the only oil-bearing rocks known in New Brunswick, is for the greater part obscured by a thick and practically horizontal blanket of Pennsylvanian strata and, although evidences of oil and gas have been reported, none has been positively identified. Five parallellines of gentle folding, running to the northeast, occur in the Pennsylvanian rocks, within a distance of 100 miles from north to south. This folding is reflected in the courses of the rivers, which lie within the synclines. The relationship of the folding in the younger rocks to structures in the uncomfortably underlying older rocks is unknown, but should now be possible of clarification by means of a geophysical survey accompanied by drilling. Independent geological examinations have yielded no evidence of value in this respect, nor have five exploratory boreholes drilled by per-cussion tools to a maximum depth of 3,645 feet been of assistance, as only one inconclusive hole completely traversed the beds which normally overlie the Albert shales.

For several years, or from about 1932 to 1935, inclusive, the coal industry of the United States had an excellent record as to coal-mine explosions. In 1937 and in 1938 to date there has been a definite increase in the number of explosions attended by considerable loss of life and property damage. In most of these explosions one important underlying and contributing cause has been lack of sufficient (or at least efficient) ventilation to properly dilute and remove explosive gas from the mine. This increase in explosions indicates that. the lesson taught through bitter experience, many times in the not far-distant past, of the need for good ventilation is frequently being overlooked, partly because the relatively good experience of the industry in the past several years has made many mining people forgetful. Moreover mining practices are rapidly changing, and in some instances the changes are being made with little if any regard for safety. It appears, therefore, that a review of some ventilation principles and practices should be of value in preventing further disasters; this paper has been prepared with that object in mind. In coal mining the need for thorough ventilation of all underground working places is recognized by both mining practice and law; such ventilation is generally obtained by the use of fans that circulate a quantity of air much in excess of the quantity of coal produced, by weight as well as by volume. For example, in a relatively small mine producing 1,000 tons of coal per day and circulating 100,000 cubic feet of air, which is by no means abnormal, 2,000,000 pounds of coal and approximately 10,900,000 pounds of air would be moved out of the mine every 24 hours. Because of the need for adequate dilution and removal of methane issuing or likely to issue from mine strata and for removal of the carbon dioxide formed by coal and timber oxidation up-to-date coal mines usually provide an air volume which if adequately coursed not only removes these gases but also the gaseous products of the detonation of explosives (which may include carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen) and the carbon

There is a sense of geometallurgy being new; a new methodology for mining project development and improved operational strategy. One of the main challenges that any ænewÆ technology faces is a validation of the value and the need to produce case studies. However, producing case studies can often be problematic particularly given the long cycle from mineral deposit project, through feasibility and construction to stabilised operation of a mine.However, the roots of geometallurgy go back quite some time. Successful practices with geometallurgy can be seen from as early as the 1980s. Many times those practices were not called geometallurgy but something else and, in other cases, what can be seen are various components of the geometallurgical ævalue chainÆ.This paper will analyse a selection of published past practices from a geometallurgical perspective to demonstrate the value realised from the application of this methodology. The paper will then make some general comments on where this history of work in geometallurgy has lead us to and what are the challenges today for the geometallurgical effort.CITATION:S R Williams, 2013. Current treatment and disposal procedures are compared for clay slimes resulting from the extraction of Alberta oil sands, the extraction of Florida phosphate matrix, the recovery of diamonds from kimberlite deposits in South Africa, the recovery of kaolin from clay deposits in southwest England and the upgrading of bauxite ore. Published research in the area is reviewed, and common trends which are emerging in the disposal of clay slimes are discussed.

The kinetics of the oxidation of thiosulfate by copper(I I) in ammoniacal solutions have been studied in the presence and absence of dissolved oxygen. The formation of an intermediate mixed ammine/thiosulfate copper(II) complex ion has been confirmed and the rate of the reaction monitored by simultaneous on-line spectrophotometric, dissolved oxygen and potentiometric measurements. The rate of the anaerobic oxidation of thiosulfate by copper(II) was found to be orders of magnitude slower than that in the presence of dissolved oxygen and is inhibited in the presence of ammonia and anions such as sulfate and chloride as a result of competition with thiosulfate for the axial coordination sites on the copper(II) tetrammine complex. In the presence of dissolved oxygen, it was found that the copper(I) thiosulfate complexes are only very slowly oxidized while the copper(I) diammine complex is rapidly reoxidised to the copper(II) state. Thus, the initial rapid reaction with copper(II) leads to a pseudo steady-state condition in which the concentration of copper(I) is relatively constant and the rate of oxidation of thiosulfate can be predicted from the measured rate of oxidation of copper(I) by oxygen in ammoniacal solutions. The effects of the concentrations of ammonia and thiosulfate on the oxidation rate can be rationalized on the basis of the above coupled to the species distribution of copper(I) in the ammonia/thiosulfate system. It is shown that, with relatively simple measurements of dissolved oxygen and copper concentrations, the rate of oxidation of thiosulfate can be predicted under typical leaching conditions.

Since its inception the United States Bureau of Mines has fostered the development of portable mine lamps. Although there is still much to be desired with respect to illumination in coal and metal mines and the replacement of open lights has been slow the Bureau has been given credit for assisting materially in the development and introduction of the safe and efficient portable mine-lighting equipment available today. Much of the work conducted by the electrical section of the Bureau entails approval tests of various types of electrical equipment, including lamps; to be used in atmospheres that may contain methane or coal dust in explosive proportion. If a can lamp meets the requirements-for safety, efficiency, and adequacy, as published in Schedule 6B,4 it is approved and is generally known as a "permissible" lamp. The terms "approved" and '"permissible' often are used interchangeably. The manufacturer must put an approval plate on each approved lamp, showing it has mot the schedule requirements. The approval plate is not a guarantee that the lamp is safe. However, if the lamp, once in service, has not had any parts changed or improperly assembled or if carts that wear out or depreciate have been properly replaced it should still, be safe, efficient, and adequate for the service intended. Virtually all electric cap lamps in service today in the United States and a great many that have been sent to foreign countries bear the approval plate of the United States Bureau of Mines. Although many explosions have been attributed to open lights none has been charged against the permissible cap lamp. Nystagmus, a disease of the eye attributed to working under insufficient illumination, is practically unknown among; American miners, although it is quite prevalent among European miners.

A series of 15, stations beginning with Potsdam and Budapest and ending with Budapest and Potsdam were occupied inn the period August, 1908, to January, 1909. The intermediate stations were all at points which had been connected by Baron Eötvös with torsion-balance traverses. The observations were made with an invariable pendulum of the standard four-pendulum type of instrument of the Geodetic Institute, made by Stückrath at Berlin-Friedenau. The observations at each of the field stations lasted-one to three days with one exception; two or three time determinations were made; four to eight series of pendulum observations were made; the error of determination of the elevation of the instrument above mean sea level ranged from 0.30 meter to 1.10 meters, with the exception of the Arad and Baja stations, where the elevation was known more accurately and averaged about ± 0.8 m, which would cause an error of ± 0.25 x 10-3 dynes. No topographic correction was applied. The values for ?g were taken from Eötvös: Report on Geodetic Observations in Hungary, especially Observations with the Torsion Balance, Budapest, 1910. The differences in ?g as determined, by the torsion balance and by the unvariable pendulum were: Kuvin-Hidegkut 1.2 km. 0.001, Livada-Kuvin 9 km. 0.001, Pankota-Livada 13 km. 0.004, Kuvin-Arad 20 km. 0.000, Pankota-Arad via Kuvin 42 42 km.0.005, Pankota- Arad via Kurtics 50 km.0.000 dynes. Oltay concludes that if the stations are close enough together and if the terrane is rather flat, the measurement of ?g with the Eötvös torsion balance is as accurate as with the invariable pendulum. -- Donald C. This report is one of a series of papers on coal mining methods and costs which are being prepared through the sponsorship of the U. S. Bureau of Mines for the purpose of bringing to the industry a knowledge of methods as they are used at the present time, and data on certain features which govern costs, safety, and conservation. The methods employed are, influenced by local conditions with respect to the character and dip of the coal, the nature of the, roof and the thickness of the overburden, and the means employed for roof support and its control.
