The AMIRA Code of Practice and Guidelines for Metal Accounting was developed in response to demand from a number of sponsor companies, including one major platinum producer. Since its publication in 2007, the Code has become widely accepted in the mining industry world-wide as a guide for best practice in metal accounting. With the changes in the structure of the platinum mining industry in South Africa over the last 10 ? 15 years, in particular, the starting up of a number of small platinum producers who must have their concentrate smelted and the contained valuable metals refined by third parties, the need for metal accounting systems that are accurate and have an acceptable level of precision has become even more critical to the success of a platinum-producing operation. The current state of metal accounting in the industry is discussed and possible areas for improved accounting and associated metallurgical efficiencies are identified.

The generally accepted view in rock blasting is that the sources of energy for the fracture and movement of rock reside in the shock wave and gas action resulting from the explosion, and yet the mechanisms by which these sources interact with the rock have remained unclarified. It has also been noted that up to 50% of the work capacity of an explosive released in a blast cannot be accounted for by field measurements of energy partitioning. In this study, we describe a physical model that details the response of rock to both shock wave and gas action. An analytical model based on momentum conservation is derived to describe the dynamics of shock-driven expansion of the blasthole. Radial expansion of the hole is the key parameter that permits the derivation of the following characteristics of rock response to shock loads: hole expansion time; volume of displaced rock; energy consumed per unit volume; expansion energy efficiency; stress wave pulse length; gas pressure in enlarged hole. Soon after the completion of hole expansion, the shock wave degenerates to an elastic stress wave that runs through the burden. Blasthole expansions of between 50% and 300% of diameter are completed in under 1 ms and, depending on rock properties, consume 32% to 42% of the detonation energy or about 55% of the available mechanical (Gurney) energy. Gas pressure in the enlarged holes in five rock types is between 35 MPa and 650 MPa, and drives the mass movement of burden rock.

The Sago Mine Disaster, on January 2, 2006, placed renewed focus on several different aspects of safety in the underground coal mining industry. One area which received increased attention since Sago and other underground coal mining events is the concept of Safety Culture. This report describes the results of a pilot Safety Culture Assessment implemented at a small Appalachian underground coal mine, hereafter referred to as the Mine. The purposes of this pilot assessment were to (a) evaluate the feasibility and usefulness of a methodology for assessing safety culture that had previously been developed for use within other industries, (b) to initiate an investigation into the understanding and defining of the existing safety culture of the underground coal mining industry, and (c) provide meaningful and useful recommendations for the participating mine for their consideration in their ongoing quest to enhance their existing safety culture. This pilot assessment was conducted in July 2007. The report provides information regarding the presence or absence of safety culture characteristics within the Mine. Observations regarding the characteristics of the Mine?s safety culture that should be sustained are presented. Areas in need of attention and management focus to improve the Mine?s safety culture are presented as well as recommendations for moving forward. Safety culture characteristics that are important for the existence of a positive safety culture have been identified to include: - Safety is a clearly recognized value in the organization. - Accountability for safety in the organization is clear. - Safety is integrated into all activities in the organization. - A safety leadership process exists in the organization. - Safety culture is learning driven in the organization. - A process for establishing a strong and effective Safety Conscious Work Environment (SCWE) is in place. Performance objectives are associated with each of the safety culture characteristics and particular behaviors and attitudes have been identified that can be measured to evaluate these objectives. Using a methodology originally developed with the support of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an assessment of selected organizational behaviors and attitudes was conducted to evaluate the Mine in terms of these safety culture characteristics and their associated performance objectives. The methodology involves obtaining a variety of quantitative and qualitative information, using multiple data-gathering methods. The information collected is largely based upon the perceptions of the individuals in the organization. The evaluation is a ?point in time? snapshot of the Mine, but cultural beliefs and assumptions do not change quickly. The feasibility and usefulness of the methodology was successfully demonstrated during this pilot assessment. Mill scale is an oxide waste product of the steel mills, which contains around 70% iron and other allied impurities. In the present context, a dynamic prototype counter current reactor (CCR) has been used for experimentation and simulation of particle bed by using discrete element method (DEM). Mill scale was pulverized to ASTM mesh range 140 (106 μm)/ + 270 (53 μm), and then it was oxidized in CCR to make single oxide Fe2O3 phase by maintaining required thermodynamic conditions such as pure oxygen at 1100 °C. Then this oxidized powder was subjected to reduction reaction in CCR having gas mixture ( H2:N2) ratio of 1:4 at 875 ± 5 °C for filling degree (fd) and reactor revolution (ω) ranging from 5.38 to 16.14% and 2 to 5 rpm, respectively. A creeping fluid flow condition (Re ˂ 1) and natural heat convection (Gr/Re2 ˃˃ 1) has been maintained while undergoing solid–gas reaction. Besides particle bed behavior has been quantified by Froude number (Fr) for the optimum operating window. The simulation was validated by the experimental results of reactor reaction product by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. Prevailing heat transfer mechanism and reduction reaction mechanism has been established for solid–gas counter current conditions.

The present article reports the recovery of potassium from mica scrap using carbide lime waste and NaCl. The acid leaching of mica [4 M H2SO4 at 90 °C] can recover a maximum of 25% potassium. However, in the chlorination roasting (with CLW and NaCl) water leaching process, it was possible to recover potassium to the tune of 94% [900 °C, 50 min roasting; mica:CLW:NaCl 1:0.75:1]. The formation of water-soluble phase like sylvite (KCl) and water-insoluble phases like anorthite ( CaAl2Si2O8) and nepheline ( NaAlSiO4) confirms the complete breakdown of the mica crystal structure. The extraction mechanism proceeds with the formation of a transition state followed by the release of potassium as KCl. The characterisation studies using ICP-OES, XRD, FTIR and FESEM support the proposed extraction mechanism. The salt produced by the evaporation of roast-leached liquor confirms the presence of sylvite and halite only, which can be separated to get the fertiliser grade KCl.

For over 40 years, Mufulira underground copper mine has been recording incidents of rockburst. Laboratory tests and numerical analyses were carried out to understand the rockburst mechanism at the Mufulira mine. Rockburst did not occur in the chain pillars or at the mining face, but mainly in the mining drives along diminishing pillars or ahead of the mining face. RQD suggested that the rock mass in the rockburst areas was relatively intact. Laboratory tests confirmed that the rock at Mufulira mine is very strong and brittle. Elastic stress analyses for the rockburst sites by 3D displacement discontinuity method (DDM) indicated very high stress in the chain pillars and low-stress concentration at the sites of rockburst during the initial mining stages. However, there was no apparent positive correlation between the elastically calculated normal stress values and the occurrences of rockbursts. The 2D elastic FEM analysis was conducted under the concentrated stress by DDM and indicated that some stress increase with face advance for the rockburst in the vicinity of the mining face. However, stress severity indicated almost no increase, and the rockbursts cannot be explained as an instantaneous rock mass failure due to stress increase by mining. Therefore, a creep damage model was proposed to clarify the mechanism of the rockbursts. Cumulative rock damage was evaluated for the edge elements of each sidewall of the mining drives, based on the normal stresses by 3D DDM. The rockburst occurrences were well hindcasted. A method to estimate the volume of the rockburst source was proposed, and a likely result was obtained.

The current study examines the extraction of rare-earth elements from trichromatic phosphor of discarded tube lights via baking processes. The Y2O3: Eu3+ (YOX) and BaMgAl10O17: Eu2+ (BAM) phases completely decomposed during acid and alkali baking with > 90% Eu and Y extraction. Prior, selective acid leaching of the YOX phase enhanced the acid baking process at a lower temperature (< 230 ℃). Feed acid baking showed a maximum 87% Tb, 36% La, and 17% Ce extraction at 500 °C, 0.5 h, 1 ml/g H2SO4, and alkali baking yielded 16.1% Tb, 86% La, and 73% Ce at 300 ℃, 0.5 h, 50 wt.% NaOH. The acid baking of the acid-leached phosphor yielded 72% Tb, 95% La, 63% Ce, ~ 95% Y, and Eu extraction at 300 °C, 0.5 h, 1.05 mL/g H2SO4. Lower Tb extraction during the acid baking of acid-leached phosphor can be attributed to the formation of Ba3Tb( PO4)3 and BaTbO3 phases. Insoluble Si3Tb5 phase formation and partial decomposition of CeMgAl11O19: Tb3+ (CMAT) phase in the alkali baking route leads to lower Tb extraction. The acid baking process is suitable for extracting Tb, Eu, and Y, whereas the alkali baking process is suitable for La and Ce. The thermal analysis of phosphor and flux interaction depicts that alkali baking is less energy-intensive than acid baking. In comparison, the one-step acid baking process and the two-step alkali baking process yielded desirable extraction results (87% Tb, total RE (rare earth) 78.5% and 50.4% Tb, total RE 59.3%). The product yield in the acid and alkali baking route of feed, acid-leach phosphor is 36%, 29%, and 39%, 28.2%, respectively, with ~ 98% mixed rare-earth oxide purity.

Other synonyms for diatomite are : Diatomaceous silica , kieselmehl , bergmehl , diatomeenpeelite , polirschiefer , moler , molera , molererde , de smid earth , fossil flour , mountain flour , farine fossil , white peat , radiolarian earth , chalk rock, ceyssatite , randanite , and tellurine ; also various diatomite products of individual companies are known by their own trade names . The Grande Côte Mineral Sands Deposit (GCMSP) is located on a coastal mobile dune system in Senegal on the west coast of Africa. Senegal is a stable, democratic republic, having gained its independence from France in 1960. It has a population of about 12.5 million people. The dunes begin about 25 km north-east of Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, and extend northwards for more than 140 km. The mineralised dune system averages about 2 km wide with some areas extending to up to 4.5 km wide.Mineral Deposits limited (MDL), a Melbourne-based company with over 60 years operational experience in mineral sand mining in Australia, holds, through its Senegalese subsidiary MDL Senegal SARL (MDLS), a 25-year Mining Concession covering the deposits. The main heavy mineral (HM) areas identified to date are, from south to north, Mboro, Fass Boye, Diogo and Lompoul. Within the Mining Concession there is potential to identify additional resources beyond the limits of present drilling. The dunes are mobile or semi fixed, pale yellow in colour and overlie older white marine sands. The dunes range between 5 m and 30 m in height and the mineralised zones, which are essentially flat-lying, average around 15 m in thickness. The mineralisation consists, principally of ilmenite with accessory zircon, rutile and leucoxene. Zircon and ilmenite are the main commodities of interest.Independent consultants AMC estimated mineral resources for the four main deposits in 2006 of 1330 Mt of sand averaging 2.0 per cent HM at a cut-off grade of 1.5 per cent HM. At a cut-off grade of one per cent the resources were 3200 Mt averaging 1.5 per cent HM. All of the estimate was classified as Inferred Resources under the 2004 Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC, 2004).Subsequent completion of infill drilling, sampling and assaying of the initial mining area, centred at Diogo, was completed in 2008, enabling a final dredge path to be designed and ore reserves estimated, based on a JORC compliant Measured and Indicated Mineral Resource. Infill drilling is continuing in the Lompoul and the results of this campaign will be included in the JORC compliant data base by AMC in April 2010 to enable the 15 per cent year dredge path and mine plan to be finalised.Development studies have shown that the project can be optimised as a dredging operation, with mineralised sand being treated in a conventional floating spiral preconcentrator, wet concentrator and dry mineral separation plant. Engineering work now substantially completed by Ausenco Limited (Ausenco) has developed the combination of some existing plant from MDL’s past operations, and new plant for the complete process from dredging to final product separation and grading. Testwork on a series of bulk samples has determined that the project can yield a high quality zircon product and an ilmenite product along with minor rutile and leucoxene.Work to date indicates a likely output of around 80 000 t of zircon in various quality streams (Primary, Secondary, Standard and Foundry Grades), around 550 000 t of ilmenite plus around 15000 t of rutile and around 12 000 t of leucoxene/secondary ilmenite. Planned zircon output would represent around 7per cent of the total world production, which would make the GCZ&amp;IP a significant producer on a world scale.The studies have indicated capital costs to be in the range of US$400 M total operating cost (after completion of ramp-up) of around US$50 M - $55 M/a. Revenue is expected to be in the range $127&nbsp;M - $157 M/a.

At the 2017 ICGCM-conference in Morgantown, WV, a case study was presented with measurements of the upward surface movements or uplift after the closure of two neighboring coal mines (Winterslag and Zwartberg, Belgium). One was closed in the sixties, and the other closed in 1988. The study was based on satellite data (Radar-interferometry or InSAR). The analyses showed both a significant variation of uplift values above the mined area and the surrounding zones, and a variation of the uplift rate as a function of time. In other words, the phenomenon of uplift is complex. At that time, it also was clear that more research was needed to better understand this phenomenon, e.g., an identification of the various mechanisms that are relevant for the process of uplift and the quantification of the various impacts. A systematic analysis of all relevant parameters resulted in a framework that forms the basis for the analytical calculations of uplift values. These calculations show that the main impact is due to changes in the hydrostatic pressure. However, the expansion of the softest parts, i.e., the collapsed or goaf material, is not only important, but the expansion of the (stiffer) non-collapsed strata layers due to a change in pore pressure also must be integrated into the model. For the case study, the partial flooding of the underground after closure of the mine that was abandoned in the sixties is integrated into the model. Larger stiffness values also are applied for this mine, in comparison to the values of the more recently closed mine. Overall, a very good correlation is observed between the InSAR-measurements and the calculated values along a north-south transect.

Of the common causes of the larger mine accidents, such as falls of roof and coal, gas and dust explosions, mine fires, and the misuse of explosives, all of which are often closely related, each must be studied and fought in a manner peculiar to itself. The last mentioned, the misuse of black powder and other explosives, is sometimes considered the least important of these causes of mine accidents; but its impor- tance is much greater than the statistics indicate, for the reason that the misuse of explosives is the true cause of many of the fatal mine fires, gas or dust explosions, and falls of roof that are credited to other causes. Both the quantity of explosives used and the number of purposes to which they are applied are increasing. They are now made at about 150 plants, in different parts of the United States, and the product of a single year is estimated at nearly 500,000,000 pounds. Nothing in all this material is a safe or "safety" explosive when in the hands of a careless or ignorant person; and this is true whether considered in connection with the shipment or the use of these explosives. In addition to the large losses of life and property resulting from an improper use of explosives in mining, the recent statistics of the railway bureau for the safe transportation of explo- sives have shown more than 400 persons killed or injured and over $3,000,000 worth of property destroyed by explosives in transit by rail. The fact that three years of cooperative effort under the wise supervision of this bureau has reduced these losses to almost nothing encourages the hope that similar cooperative effort may likewise greatly lessen losses of life and property from the use of explosives in mining. The additions to the large death roll of our mines make a recurring appeal to the public for fair treatment of the coal-mining industry, and to the miner and the manager that they join in every possible effort for greater safety. It may never be possible under conditions such as exist to-day to prevent mine accidents entirely. Growing global concern over the impacts of climate change, attributable largely to fossil fuel energy sources, has led to the widely shared goal for a ‘just transition’ to cleaner energy and reduced dependence on carbon-based fuels. As the world’s 14th biggest CO2 emitter and being particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, South Africa must embark on a just transition pathway. This paper reviews expected coal mine closures and associated community vulnerabilities and local governance challenges in South Africa. Decommissioning schedules for all coal-fired power stations and operating coal mines are plotted, and 69 mining host communities and 21 municipalities are mapped, classified, and described. Community socio-economic profiles are measured using a set of SDG indicators and census data and municipalities assessed through financial audits. Our research shows that five coal-fired power plants (8.9 GW) and 15 coal mines (29.5 Mt/a) will probably close by 2030, and a further four plants (14 GW) and 23 mines (106 Mt/a) by 2040. Thus, the shift to cleaner energy will likely occur without the premature closures implied by the just transition. The impact of mine closure on the 2.5 million residents of host communities will be significant, particularly as levels of income, employment, and education are already very low and many municipalities are in financial distress. The South African approach to the just transition needs to take local realities into account and the narrative must support an effective transition that does not undermine energy security and economic growth.

GEORGIUS AGRICOLA was not only the author of works on Mining and allied subjects, usually asso ciated with his name, but he also interested himself to some extent in political and religious subjects. For convenience in discussion we may, therefore, divide his writings on the broad lines of (1) works on mining, geology, mineralogy, and allied subjects; (2) works on other subjects, medical, religious, critical, political, and historical. In respect especially to the first division, and partially with regard to the others, we find three principal cases : (a) Works which can be authenticated in European libraries today ; (b) references to editions of these in bibliographies, catalogues, etc., which we have been unable to authenticate ; and (c) references to works either unpublished or lost. Electronic detonators have been commercially available to the mining industry worldwide for over ten years. It is estimated that total cumulative global sales will have reached 25 million units by the time of the Conference in February 2004. This is below 0.2% of all detonator types sold during this period. Perhaps 20 million will have been used underground in South African gold, diamond and platinum mines. These will have been produced by South African companies, in South Africa for South African customers. Here efforts have met with greater success and in 2003 fully 5 million, or 3% of local detonators sold, could be of an electronic type. However, it is estimated that about US$7.00 (R50.00) has been expended on R & D, manufacturing facilities and marketing, for each unit so far sold. Large sums of money continue to be spent. Despite the apparent success in South Africa, is it justified? Electronic initiation systems have not produced significant technical benefits to the end-user underground nor corporate profits to the supplier. Some doubt they ever will (even from the large surface operations where the price per unit is much higher). A conclusion might be that they have failed. In 1998 Smit and Pistorius wrote a paper titled “Implications of the Dominant Design in Electronic Initiation Systems in the South African Mining Industry”. This ISEE paper seeks to summarise and review the conclusions of the earlier work. These were: that a dominant design had not yet emerged; the type of connector and the way in which detonators are connected and programmed would be a strong determinant influencing the development of a “winning” product; technical aspects rarely solely determine which becomes the dominant design (marketing, social and economic factors often have a strong influence); electronic initiation systems were an emerging technology for the underground gold mining industry in South Africa and because it was under severe cost pressure the mines would look to them to raise productivity and hence profits; finally, as a dominant design begins to emerge, one could expect a number of players to exit from the industry.

Since the days of Adam Smith and Milton Friedman the discussion of corporate citizenship and sustainability has been flooded with multiple contradictions, with proponents of sustainability saying that it is a crucial cog in the business strategy, while those against, maintain that æthe business of business is businessÆ and therefore sustainability issues are just add-ons. Sustainability arises from a deeply held vision by corporate leaders that businesses can and should play a role beyond just making money. Businesses should embrace the understanding that everything that a company does has an impact both internally and externally (communities, employees and customers), and the natural environment. This paper highlights the approach that led to a view that there is a contradiction between profitability, sustainability and community development, and we provide a further argument to the contrary. This argument is based on a comprehensive literature review of over three decades by various scholars linking corporate social performance and corporate financial performance. Driefontein Gold MineÆs approach is that of linking the community development, natural environmental and employee well-being initiatives and projects to the mineÆs business strategy. The paper further highlights the coordination and implementation mechanism of sustainability at the mine where the accountability lies with the head of the mine operations. A two pronged approach is employed where there is an internal dialogue on sustainability between the various departments coordinated by the sustainable development department and an external tri-sector partnership with local government, interested and affected parties and the mine. These approaches are closely linked to the contributions towards the mineÆs financial bottom line.

The Morning Star diorite dyke has been subjected to two periods of mineralization. The earlier, genetically related to the dyke magma, gave rise to a weak chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-pentlandite-gold mineralization in a narrow zone, up to 25 cm. wide, which parallelsthe nearby western (hanging) wall of the dyke. Subsequently a set of conjugate shears formed in the dyke as a result of tectonic movements. Gold-quartz veins formed in these shears giving rise to the classical &quot;ladder veins&quot; of the Morning Star mine. On either side of the veins (&quot;floors&quot;) the diorite has been bleached for up to 3 ft. This involved introduction of much CO. and some K&quot;O, and S with abstraction of SiO. and FeO, giving rise to carbonates, sericite, zoisite and pyrite. The veins consist of quartz with minor amounts of albite and carbonate, together with pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, galena, bournonite, boulangerite and gold. The structure of this series of repeating quartz veins or &quot;floors&quot;, some barren and some productive, occurring in a set of conjugate shears which transect a &quot;dyke bulge&quot; of diorite (Fig. 1), has been described on numerous occasions as mining has progressed and figures in the textbooks (Whitelaw, 1905; 1916; Junner, 1920; Lindgren, 1933; McKinstry, 1935; 1942; 1949; Kenny, 1949; Hills, 1952; Clappison, 1953) ; but there has been no study of the mineralization apart from that in Junner&apos;s (1920) general study of the Walhalla-Wood&apos;s Point Goldfield, made at a time when mining had not developed below the 400 ft. level,. and the mine was dormant.

This paper describes a collaborative project undertaken by Newcrest Mining Limited (Newcrest) and pitt&sherry to identify, develop and then implement global best practices to manage the exposure to inrush (dry and mud) hazards in underground mining operations. An extensive literature review was undertaken to identify past experience globally and the current state of knowledge and practice in managing inrush hazard. A key requirement of the literature review was the development of a list of guiding questions which would form a framework for approaching operators to discuss the topic, capture recent learnings and understand current operating practices to allow the development of a best practice solution. An initial cohort of 14 mines across four continents chose to contribute and detailed interviews were carried out by the project team. The outcome from the literature review, interviews with participating mines and various internal discussions was a comprehensive summary document detailing Basic versus Best Practice management of the inrush hazard. This document is being used as a gap analysis tool by Newcrest to assess and guide the management of inrush hazard at their existing and future operations. The summary document has also been provided to the participating mines for their consideration. The project is iterative and will continue to evolve as new experiences, knowledge and practices come to light.

Leveraging 20 years of experience as a global technology provider of Proximity Detection System (PDS) and Collision Avoidance System (CAS) solutions for surface mining operations, Wabtec Digital Mine Technology shares key insights for ensuring the effective selection, implementation and integration of these technologies into existing mine site controls and mining operations for effectively reducing vehicle interaction risk enabling mines to drive towards ‘zero-harm’ objectives. Insights will also be provided on the challenges moving from EMESRT levels 7 (operator awareness) and 8 (advisory controls) to level 9 (intervention controls) as it’s a journey not an out-of-box solution, the growing demand for coexistence of CAS and Autonomous Haulage Solutions (AHS), functional safety approach, value added systems integration and the applicability of new emerging technologies.
