It is a recognized fact that a good maintenance program is a pre-requisite for minimum delay costs and maximum availability of equipment. To develop such a program and to make it effective, one must establish detailed instructions pertaining to inspections, lubrication, servicing, and/or replacing of various parts. A schedule must also be established for these maintenance checks, whether they be weekly, monthly, or whatever period is essential for the equipment. The number of tasks to be performed becomes monumental, and the administration is beyond error-free human capacity. It is for this reason that the computer must be an essential element in any efficient and economical preventive maintenance program. The evolution of a computerized maintenance program began some 18 years ago in the Mining Division of USSteel. It started with a manual system of preparing cards containing preventive maintenance instructions that had to be performed on some regular basis. We were very quickly overtaken by the massive task of administration and distribution of instruction cards to the users. The task became insurmountable as more mines were added to the system, mines that were spread over a large geographic area. It also became evident that the ability to make changes in equipment assignments and in the "what to do" instructions would require more time than had been anticipated.

THE elements silicon and germanium are not metals within the usual, intuitive association of the word, nor are they so within a stricter definition based on the electronic binding. Two properties associated with metals are plasticity and high electrical conductivity. These elements crystallize in the diamond cubic structure, an arrangement apparently not very favorable to slip, and are therefore brittle rather than ductile. Their electrical conductivity is not like that of metals the atoms are locked together by the covalent bond, which in pure and perfectly arranged material leaves but few electrons free to act as electrical carriers.† In further contrast to metals, their electrical conductivity can be greatly increased by raising the temperature. Yet silicon and germanium are not ideally nonmetallic. They are hard, solid, and possess a metallic luster. They exhibit that peculiar brand of electrical conductivity conveniently termed "semi- conduction," wherein, as shall be seen, lies much of their importance. Both, but silicon in particular, are important components in real metallic alloys and the methods of their reduction and preparation lie clearly in the province of the metallurgist. The copper segregation process is designed to concentrate oxidized copper ores or mixed sulfide-oxide copper ores which are refractory to normal and cheaper mineral dressing or leaching processes. Such ores contain copper silicates or highly disseminated copper minerals in a gangue not entirely free from limestone or dolomite. Concentra¬tion by flotation is, under these circumstances, not possible and the acid-consuming constituents do not permit acid leaching. A high temperature treatment at 700-800°C, in the presence of a small amount of sodium chloride and of finely divided carbon, concentrates the copper into easily floated metal by a kind of reducing chloridizing roast. The sulfides, if present, are either oxidized in the heating stage and react like oxides or float with the metallic copper in the flotation step. The ores which have the aforementioned characteristics and which are high grade enough to pay for the treatment are scarce, so that the process has only a limited application. THERE is an ever-increasing demand for furnaces with controlled atmosphere, due to the large quantities of steel being used in the automotive industry, such as the .high-chromium stainless irons, the 18 Cr, 8 Ni stainless iron and low-carbon steel sheets. The difficulties involved in the annealing of such materials, if they are to be kept absolutely free from oxidation, are many. It is possible to bright-anneal these steels in small laboratory hydrogen furnaces, using specially purified hydrogen and taking some additional precautions. In the first place, the insulation, usually of alumina or magnesia, holds small amounts of water vapor, which it is almost impossible to remove completely. Secondly, there is always condensation of water vapor in the cooling chambers of such furnaces, and with the continuous circulation of the hydrogen gas in the furnace, the water vapor is carried from the cooling chamber back into the heating chamber. This water vapor oxidizes the charge. Lastly, the supply of moisture is made sure by the diffusion of small amounts of air from the atmosphere into the furnace against the pressure of the hydrogen. The oxygen combines with the hydrogen and forms more water. Under such conditions there is, little gained by using specially purified gas, because it becomes contaminated after reaching the furnace.

Fine grinding in an air swept and a grate discharge ball mill working in closed circuit with a forced vortex air classifier has been investigated in continuous laboratory scale. Minerals with different physical properties were ground down to 40, 20, and 10 micron top size. The shape of the product particle size distribution curve was investigated and specific surface (BET) was measured. During production of material with top size of 40 microns in an air swept mill, the capacity was up to 25% higher when compared to a grate discharge mill. This difference dropped to 180A during production of 10 micron top size material. A corresponding decrease in power consumption was observed. An important finding is that by regulation of the air flow rate through the mill, it is possible to achieve products with different specific surfaces and particle size distribution curve steepness. During production of the 10 pm material, the specific surface could be varied in the range 3 to 4.5 m2/g. Such powders could hardly be produced in a grate discharge mill because fine particles coated the grinding media and the lining. On the other hand the internal classification in the air swept mill kept the size distribution of the mill content relatively free of fines. This prevented a similar slowing-down of the air swept grinding process.

The relationship between the maceral composition of coal and the strength of the coke produced from that coal has received a great deal of attention in recent years. Studies using two Bulli Seam coals, and blends of Bulli and Wongawilli Seam coals, from the Illawarra Measures of the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales were carried out. The optimum range of vitrinite was found to lie between 45% and 60% (mineral matter free). Above and below this vitrinite range coke strength deteriorated. I Coke strength indices increased with rank and the optimum vitrinite content increased with an increase in rank. These changes will require confirmation as trends by testing a third level of rank. It was noted that vitrinite content decreased with an increase in the specific gravity of separation of the coal. . T Use of- petrographic analyses will increase confidence in choosing coals for coking, provided the coals are well known. Such analyses offer the possibility of greater flexibility in coal purchases and the possibility of producing a marketable blend from coals, which have limited market potential. Critical base coals for blends can be conserved. Significantly more work is required before coal reserves can be utilised to optimum advantage. This work would require extension of-the studies discussed in this paper and, in particular, the testing of a wider range of rank.

INTRODUCTION The facility water balance and maintenance of sufficient excess storage volume in the solution control system are often amongst the most critical facets of design and operation of heap leach facilities in cold, snowy climates. The purpose of this paper is to summarize and discuss climatic and operational factors which have a significant impact on heap leach water balance evaluations in high snowfall climates. Example water balance simulations are presented for proposed heap leach projects located in areas subject to high snowfall in the northwestern United States. The climatic data input to these simulations represent both net evaporative and net precipitation climates. FACTORS AFFECTING WATER BALANCE EVALUATIONS The combined effects of seasonal operations, re1atively low evaporative losses, and potentially large inflows to the solution control system from snowpack and spring storms require an enhanced awareness of the factors which impact facility water balance. Unlike operations at mines in more arid climates, seasonal excess water rather than a shortage of make-up water is the rule. A thorough understanding of a number of factors, including regulatory constraints, climatic influences, and impact of operating philosophy and techniques, is critical to successful development of an incident-free heap leach operation under high snowfall climatic conditions. A process water circuit schematic for a typical heap leach operation is shown on Figure 1.

The dispersion of oily collector has a significant effect on the flotation recovery of ultrafine coal. Generally, reagent dispersion is accomplished by mechanical mixing and/or ultrasonic agitation, followed by direct addition of dispersed collector into the flotation cell. Such dispersion and reagent addition techniques are invariably inadequate and nonselective. A new collector addition technique involving gas phase transport of atomized collector has shown improved results when compared to conventional reagent addition techniques. This technique involves atomization of the collector into the air stream. Under these circumstances, an aerosol is introduced into the flotation cell. Initially, the oil is dispersed within the air phase (continuous with respect to oil), and the air phase is dispersed within the pulp (continuous with respect to aerosol). In the flotation cell, the atomized oil droplets coalesce on the bubble's surface and create a de facto oil-encapsulated bubble. This approach provides excellent dispersion, increases selectivity, and, most significantly, increases the flotation rate of ultrafine coal. Atomization of collector/frother combinations yielded improved flotation recovery and maintained near uniform froth levels, which is a desirable feature in coal flotation. Microscopic examinations of the attachment of oil- coated bubbles at a coal surface were conducted by attachment time and contact angle measurements. Oil-coated bubbles attach at significantly faster rates and with a higher contact angle than oil-free bubbles.

Modern surface mines are among the world's largest single consumers of diesel fuel. A typical mine site can consume in excess of 200 million liters of diesel fuel per year. Delivered diesel fuel is not necessarily clean. Depending on the mode of transportation, handling practices and local climate, incoming bulk fuel can contain up to 20 mg/L suspended solid contaminants and also significant quantities of free water, which can amount to substantial quantities ? for a typical mine site 200 to 400 kg of dirt per year. Standard on-board fuel filters are not designed to handle high levels of contamination, and most engine manufacturers have specific fuel cleanliness requirements to ensure reliable engine operation. New developments in fuel injector technology, such as high pressure, common rail injectors require even cleaner fuel. In order to ensure reliable operation, it is therefore recommended to control particulate contamination throughout the entire Diesel supply chain - from the bulk storage on mine sites to the injection systems on-board through the use of particulate filtration and liquid coalescence technologies. In this work, the author introduces a comprehensive approach to contamination control for the entire fuel supply chain, and discusses the benefits of using advanced filtration and separation technologies, with a particular focus on the requirements of modern high pressure, common rail (HPCR) fuel injection systems.

The study of the apatite deposits of the Aldan Shield shows wide spread of the Precambrian apatite-carbonate ores and possibilities of using them for extraction of apatite. Dependency of flotation on ore minerals was studied according to the following scheme: preparation of the monomineralic samples of anhydrite, gypsum, chlorite, serpentine, phlogopite, apatite; mixing them in apatite ore of the average composition; followed by flotation. Another series of the experiments was conducted to ascertain a dependence of flotation activity of the different minerals on the different flotation reagents, which were used as collectors. It has been shown that apatite from silicate-carbonate ores is most extractable because it has the biggest size of grains and is the most free of inclusions. Beneficiation of the sulphate-containing apatite-carbonate rocks is possible when flotol - 7.9 is used as a collector. Meanwhile, the use of the tallaktam leads to an increase in the sulphate recovery. The estimation of individual technological features of the layered Mghydrosilicates and their influence on the process of beneficiation has been examined using samples of apatite-dolomite ore (P205-8%) with the addition of the phlogopite, serpentine and chlorite. The results show that there is little influence of the chlorite presence on the flotation while the serpentine presence leads to a decrease of the flotation, because of its high specific surface area.

General. Copper, the first metal used by man, today is the third in consumption after iron and aluminum. Compared to these it is relatively rare, with less than 0.01% of the earth's crust copper, 8% aluminum, and 5% iron. Nevertheless. our modern civilization is heavily dependent upon copper because of its high conductivity and resistance to corrosion, ease of working, durability, wide range of properties by virtue of its readiness to form alloys with other metals, and its attractive colors and texture that make it so desirable for many crafts and arts. These attributes explain why copper is chosen for a long list of uses, including electrical wiring, switchgear, and bus bars; piping, roofing, and siding; and manufactures of brass, bronze, and other alloys. The fact that copper ore is mined in nearly all parts of the world is significant. Its importance is shown in Table I, which gives figures on world production from 1968 to 1977. In the Free World, North and South America and Africa are preeminent. The table also shows the generally upward trend of production in this period; accurate figures for 1978 and 1979 from the same source are not yet available (1980), but it is certain that major environmental, economical, and political factors continued to disturb the industry in those years and into 1980.

On the 27th day of March last, the day on which the Florida sessions of the last meeting of the Institute began in Ocala, occurred the death of one of its most distinguished honorary members, Bergrath Franz Posepny, of Vienna, formerly professor of the science of ore-deposits in the mining school at Przibram, Bohemia. Prof. Posepny had greatly increased his fame among American mining engineers, besides laying the Institute under special obligations of gratitude, by the elaborate, brilliant and suggestive treatise on " The Genesis of OreDeposits," which he contributed to the International meeting, held at Chicago, in 1893. This essay, constituting the first complete publication of the substance of his course of lectures at Przibram, enriched and perfected by the matured results of his investigation and reflection down to the date of its cornpletion, was a free gift of almost unprecedentecl value to the society which had distinguished him by honorary membership. In estimating the generosity of the author, it must be borne in mind that the copyright of such a work, the fruit of years of study and of practice as an instructor, is of no little value to a European professor, and constitutes one of the legitimate rewards of his (otherwise not highly-paid) labor. ADVANCES in the production of quality steel have emphasized the need for greater knowledge of the amount and distribution of oxygen in the steel. Control of inclusion content and quality is largely dependent on such knowledge. While many analytical methods have been de-vised for the accomplishment of this end, few are without serious limita-tions in accuracy, convenience, or skill required in application. Usually at least two methods are necessary to determine total oxygen and constituent oxides. Because of the great importance of this problem and the specific interest in the application of such methods of analysis, the various procedures were carefully reviewed at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, with the view of developing a method free from the limitations mentioned above. Intensive experimentation finally led to an improved iodine extraction analysis described by Cunningham and Price. I After this had been thoroughly checked from the standpoint of the analytical chemist, it was rechecked from that of the metallurgist. This involved preparation of a number of small heats of varying composition with determination of total oxygen in the molten metal by the alumina method2 and an analysis of the solidified material without the aluminum addition by means of iodine extraction; the oxides of iron, manganese, silicon and aluminum also being determined by the iodine analysis. The report of this work constitutes the subject of this paper.

To obtain a reliable comparison between conical and cylindrical separatory vessels used in dynamic dense-medium separation systems, the following two studies were made: a study of the swirling flow in conical and cylindrical vessels using laser-Doppler velocimetry (LDV) and a study of the behavior of suspensions of magnetite and ferrosilicon in water in both separators. It was found that the tangential velocity profiles differ in conical and cylindrical vessels. In a conical cyclone, free vortex conditions affect the largest part of the vessel, while in a cylindrical vessel, the motion approaches that of a forced vortex, i.e., that of a centrifuge. It was also found that the conical vessel manifests higher centrifigal acceleration and very strong densifying (the density differential) and, hence, the density gradient inside the vessel is large. It was found that the cylindrical vessel manifests lower centrifugal acceleration and low densifying, i.e., low-density differentials, and hence, the density gradient inside the vessel is small. Also, due to greater densifying, the density cut-point in cyclones is higher than the operating medium density, while, in cylindrical vessels, the density cut- point is closer to the medium density. The results provide an interesting description of the differing behaviors of conical and cylindrical vessels, and they help explain the differences in pegormance between the two types of separators.

Beginning in 1906, data has been compiled on the distribution of uranium in phosphate de- posits. Particular emphasis has been placed on uranium in phosphate by a number of geologists and geochemists in the US Geological Survey in research sponsored by the US Atomic Energy Commission (now Nuclear Regulatory Commission) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) during the 30-year period from 1951 to 1981. A comprehensive study of uraniferous phosphate resources the United States and the Free World was completed, under the auspices of DOE, in 1979. Apatite is the main carrier of uranium in phosphate. Uranium generally replaces calcium in the mineral lattice. In marine phosphorite throughout the world, the uranium content is characteristically in the range of 0.005 to 0.02% by weight. Phosphorite takes in uranium by structural substitution in apatite or other mineral phases, by absorption, or by the formation of independent mineral phases. Apatite derived from the interaction of ground water, guano and limestone is typically relatively low in uranium content-in the 0.001 to 0.005% range. In primary accessory apatite of igneous rocks, as well as magmatic and metasomatic apatite segregations of alkalic rocks and carbonatite, uranium content is generally between 0.001 and 0.01%. INTRODUCTION The effectiveness of collector type on sulfide mineral flotation is generally determined by the amount and type of functional groups of collector molecules that interact with surface and water at the mineral/collector/water/gas interface. The final interfacial state when bubble contact takes place is preceded by chemical and physical reactions that involve these gas/liquid/solid interactions. These interactions differ not only for different minerals, solution and gas composition, but also for different collector molecules. The purpose of this paper is primarily to summarize the developments and status of short (C2-C6) and long (C12) chain, aliphatic collectors that contain three sulfur atoms in their polar function. These are trithiocarbonates (TT'Cs). For purposes of comparison, similarities in molecules containing 0, N and S are compared. Mostly short chain ionic collectors molecules of dithiocarbonates (DTCs) and TT'Cs were compared. The studies, largely bench scale flotation and plant testing, were carried out on ores containing Cu, Ni, Au, and PGM's. Studies of long chain 'ITC collectors are reported on Ni, PGM and auriferous pyrite ores containing uranium. Under starvation dosage conditions, surface activity coefficients of short chain collector molecules and interacting water were calculated. Ore and waste cannot always be visually separated. The distinction between ore and waste may need to be made on the basis of blasthole sampling. Hand drawn dig limits or computer-generated contour lines do not account for uncertainty, economics or equipment. Geometric methods for interpreting grade information such as the polygonal or triangulation methods share the same limitations as contouring. Geostatistical techniques exist for the realistic modeling of grade variations and uncertainty. Decision analysis techniques exist for the binary classification of ore, and waste blocks in the presence of this uncertainty. Block-by-block classification is not enough; mining equipment cannot exercise free selection of blocks. There is a need for procedures to determine optimal dig limits that account for (1) the uncertainty in the grades, (2) the economics of risk-qualified decision-making, and (3) the ability of the mining equipment to dig to specific limits. This paper presents a procedure for optimal determination of dig limits that account for these constraints. Simulated annealing (SA) is used with modest computational requirements because the number of variables is relatively small. The solution of the optimization problem is dig limits that maximize profit under multiple constraints. The method is illustrated with different constraints and tested against hand drawn dig limits in a "Dig Limit Challenge," which illustrates the efficacy of the new method.

Electrochemical measurements have been carried out in an auto- clave to investigate the electrochemistry of hydrogen precipitation of nickel from acetate buffered solution. After having previously obtained the rate equation for this reaction we have now made a concentrated effort to explain the rate equation electrochemically. A saturated NaC1-type Ag/AgC1 reference electrode has been improved so that it can be used in an autoclave. Polarization curves for the reaction, [H2=2H+ + 2e,] on nickel electrode were measured in solutions free from nickel ions at 185°C, and the parallel curves were obtained by changing PH2 and pH for normal and reverse reactions, respectively. Polarization curves in nickel solutions were complex, probably because the potential of hydrogen electrode is close to that of nickel and of the nickel surface altered during polarization. Then the nickel electrode potential and the reaction rate were measured simultaneously during pressure reduction at various hydrogen pressures and at various nickel concentrations. The reaction rates in terms of current density were plotted to obtain the local polarization curves for reactions Ni2+ + 2e ? Ni and H2 ?2H+ + 2e. The anodic and cathodic local polarization curves exhibit potential dependency. Therefore it is likely that the pres- sure reduction can be regarded as a coupled electrodes reaction.

The Bureau of Mines has developed PC-based tomographic computer programs for geophysical applications, and is making them available to potential users as part of a Bureau plan to facilitate the transfer of technology to industry. These programs were initially developed for predicting and monitoring the flow pattern of leach solution during in situ mining. Seismic crosshole tomography has located fractured zones of low seismic velocity and saturated zones of high seismic velocit above the natural water table. The Bureau has applied tomography also to assessing high-wall blast damage, and examining the integrity of mine-related geological structures. The tomographic programs include the straight ray pro ram BOMTOM (Bureau of Mines Tomography? and the program BOMCRATR (Bureau of Mines Curved Ray Tomographic Reconstruction) that can be run with either curved or straight rays. Both programs provide optional mathematical constraints to help counteract the nonuniqueness of reconstructions that occurs with crosshole data. They are available from the Bureau free of charge. With typical data sets, they can be run on a 386 microcomputer with 640 Kb RAM. BOMTOM was described in the Bureau Report of Investigations 9159, so this report emphasizes BOMCRATR. Curved and straight ray reconstructions using seismic field data collected while simulating injection of leach solution were compared. The curved and straight ray tomograms were quite similar even with velocity variations of more than 50 percent.
