"Crude zinc oxides are the major source of secondary zinc and are produced from fuming processes like Waelz kilns. The impurities of crude zinc oxides make difficult their processing in primary zinc refineries due to mainly high chloride tenor. Washing with sodium carbonate is a costly operation and chloride removal efficiency is not good enough, so further purification steps are required. The crude zinc oxides are easily treated using ZINCEX™ technology based on leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. The ZINCEX™ process is commercially available and is designed to be a perfect barrier for metallic impurities and halogens, allowing selective zinc extraction in mixed chloride and sulfate leaching solutions. Other valuable components as lead and silver can be efficiently recovered from the leaching residue using PLINT technology in chloride media. Silver is recovered as silver cement and lead is precipitated as pure lead oxide or carbonate, which can be smelted at low temperature.IntroductionZinc is a fully recyclable metal and at present approximately 70% of the zinc produced worldwide comes from primary zinc while 30% originates from secondary materials. Nowadays, the zinc recycling rate is continuously increasing mainly through galvanized steel scrap processing, and crude zinc oxides are the major source of secondary zinc [1]. Secondary zinc oxides are obtained from fuming processes like W aelz Kiln, Rotary Hearth Furnace or Primus Furnace. Waelz is the dominant technology accounting for 80% of total crude zinc oxides production worldwide. In the Waelz process, steel dust is mixed with solid fuel reductant (coke breeze) and pelletized. It is then fed to the kiln and heated to a reaction temperature of l ,200°C. In such conditions, zinc, lead, and other non-ferrous metals are vaporized into the flue gas together with chlorides and alkaline metals. Mixed oxides are drawn from the kiln with the process gases and separated to produce typical crude zinc oxides [2]."

Field data combined with theoretical derivations were used to design a surface mining operation using explosive casting. Calculated casting results varied from 44 to 65% depending on bench height. This model was then applied to field tests at an eastern, contour, coal stripping operation. Results from five experimental casting shots are summarized and compared to conventional mining methods. The overburden material removed by casting ranged from 35 to 65% with an average of 50%. Fragmentation was improved and it was demonstrated that this procedure is economically attractive with a resultant cost savings of $.59/m3 or $5.93/t of clean coal.

"The weathering of coal mine waste rock releases iron, calcium, sulfate and associated trace elements like selenium (Se). Nitrogen species are also found in association with coal-mining drainages mainly due to the leaching of residual blasting compounds. Elevated concentrations of Se are a ubiquitous occurrence in coal-mining environments in British Columbia. A major concern with waterborne Se in British Columbia is the potential for its bioaccumulation in aquatic food chains.Treatment to remove Se from coal-mining waste waters has proven to be challenging for conventional water-treatment technologies. Compounding this challenge, many streams are characterized by high flows and low selenium concentrations. Conventional membrane and ion exchange treatments produce concentrated brine streams that are difficult to treat or require disposal. Conventional biotreatment systems use excess nutrients to provide the required electrons to compensate for inefficient and variable electron availability, as well as to adjust reactor chemistry.This paper's electro-biochemical reactor (EBR) technology provides a controllable and consistent supply of useable electrons to the microbes directly at a low voltage potential (1-3 V) and low current. In this manner, the EBR technology overcomes the shortcomings found in conventional systems, as it reduces the required nutrient addition and provides a more controllable, efficient, economical and robust biotreatment system. Additionally, the EBR process does not produce excess solids or biomass; therefore, solids management post-treatment is not required.Laboratory EBR bench-scale and on-site pilot-scale systems were used to treat five British Columbia coal-mine waste waters; influent Se concentrations ranged from 35 µg/L to 531 µg/L. Se treatment targets for the tested waters ranged from 5 to 10 µg/L. Mean Se concentrations in EBR effluents ranged from 0.5 µg/L to 1.4 µg/L, while reducing sulfate concentrations. The test data demonstrate that the EBR technology is an effective Se removal option for British Columbia’s coal-mining waste waters.IntroductionSelenium in Mining. Selenium (Se) is a naturally occurring trace element, which is an essential nutrient in small amounts (Thompson and Robinson, 1980; Brown and Arthur, 2001). However, it is also toxic to aquatic life, birds, and humans at very low concentrations. With copper at its host depressed price in several years, producers are looking at every opportunity to cut costs in order to continue operating. Some of the measures that have been applied by different companies include reduction in manpower, high grading, and in some cases partial shutdowns. The most beneficial cost cutting measure implemented by Southern Peru Copper Corporation was to steepen the slope of the final pit limit from a conservative 37 degrees to an average of 48 degrees. By doing so, substantial cash outlays were saved. Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC) operates two open pit copper mines and concentrators in the southern part of Peru, about 150 kilometers from the Chilean bordar. The Toquepala Mine went into production in 1960 and the Cuajone Mine in 1976. Both mines use shovel, truck and train operations. The trains, which haul ore to the crusher or waste to the dumps, are loaded either directly by shovels or by a transfer system. The Toquepala Concentrator treats an average of 43,000 tons per day and the Cuajone Concentrator an average of 55,000 tons per day. Concentrates are shipped via a 200 kilometer railroad to the port city of Ilo where the SPCC smelter is located. The annual production in the smelter from both mines is 290,000 tons of blister copper.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines investigation was to determine what new organic compounds or high concentrations of a particular organic species can be formed by exposure of coal derivatives to ultrasonic energy. Tetralin, l-methylnaphthalene, and pyridine were used as model compounds. Gaseous and solid reaction products resulting from the ultrasonic irradiation of these coal derivatives were determined using mass spectrometry. Products from the irradiation of tetralin were studied as a function of time, atmosphere, and sample size. The sonolysis (chemical reactions produced by ultrasonic energy) of tetralin and l-methylnaphthalene produced C2H2, HCN, CH4, H2, CO, and CO2, depending upon the experimental conditions. The ultrasonic irradiation of tetralin also produced diacetylene under certain experimental conditions. The cleavage of organic chemical bonds by ultrasonic cavitation in the absence of water was also observed in this study.

Most of the known in-place reserves of oil sands are found in Canada. These oil sands ores are mined using various processes to extract bitumen. The by-product slurry resulting from the extraction process, known as tailings, is discharged into tailings ponds. Fine kaolin clays are an important ingredient of the tailings because they remain suspended in water for many years. Current polymeric flocculation/dewatering technologies use acrylamide-based polymers such as polyacrylamide (PAM), but sediments produced using PAM-based flocculants hold considerable amounts of water due to the formation of loosely-packed flocs. Anionic polymers are better flocculants due to bridging and the charge-neutralisation mechanism. In this paper, we will compare the synthesis of two flocculants: thermosensitive, anionic flocculants and thermosensitive, hydrophobically modified anionic flocculants. The first flocculant is a copolymer of acrylic acid (AA) and N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM), in which AA is the anionic monomer. The second flocculant is a copolymer of NIPAM, AA and the hydrophobic monomer N-tert-butyl acrylamide. We evaluated the dewatering efficiency of 2 wt per cent kaolin using both flocculants by comparing settling rates at different flocculant dosages, charge neutralisation ability and supernatant clarity. To better understand floc formation, we measured the floc size formed by both flocculants at different flocculant dosages. We propose that the hydrophobic monomer in the terpolymer flocculant helps expel water out of flocs, ultimately decreasing the water content in the sediments.CITATION:Gumfekar, S P, Vedoy, D R L, Botha, L and Soares, J B P, 2015. "It is well understood that the flow of liquid metal in the mold region of the caster can have a notable effect on the overall solidification behavior in aluminum casting. Previously our group has characterized the flow in this region in a water model, using particle imaging velocimetry. The flow is significantly effected by the specifics of the metal delivery system, i.e. size, geometry, used during the cast. Recently, a time-averaged 3D numerical model of the nozzle, combo bag and sump region has been developed and its validity has been tested against experimental data. Cases were run for different sized combo bags as well as bags that have been blocked. The results show satisfactory agreement between the physical and mathematical models.IntroductionFluid flow in the head of an electromagnetic (EM) and direct chill (DC) ingots has been shown to effect many important operational parameters in casting such as superheat removal, macrosegregation, and hot cracking. In most cases, the momentum from the nozzle is diverted through a delivery system, termed a bag, before entering the mold region. The specific geometries of the bags vary widely from operator to operator suggesting that there is still some question as to the optimum design. Several studies [1-4] have been carried out to understand the influence of the bag design on the solidification behavior in aluminum casters. However, few studies have included numerical prediction with experimental verification. Unfortunately, many simulations performed today still do not accurately account for flow in such devices.Recently, a significant amount of research into the flow resulting from the metal delivery systems has been performed [5-8]. The thrust of this research has been characterizing the flow patterns by a measurement technique called particle imaging velocimetry. The data suggest that the method of delivering the liquid metal into the mold region has a significant effect on the nature of the flow. With a detailed set of quantitative data from a water model, a numerical model can be built and tested to ensure a proper description of the flow field. The computational model used in these simulations is designed to represent a laboratory scale model of a caster in which ""combo"" bags were simulated. Such bags are mostly of a densely woven glass fiber material with low permeability to aluminum. ""Windows"", of a more open weave, permit aluminum to flow from the bag, see Fig. I. Two different sized combo bags were modeled, each subject to two different outflow window configurations. Furthermore, experimental measurements [9] were used to validate the model results."

"When performing a valuation of a mineral property, a developing mine or perhaps an ongoing operation, the appraiser is typically provided with a range of information prepared by the property owner. This information can include ownership records, geological interpretation, assay data, an estimate of the reserves or resources believed to be on site (tons and grade), mine plans, production forecasts, capital and operating cost projections, and so forth.The appraiser familiarizes himself with the data, analyzes the various reports and then prepares the appraisal. There is usually a site visit, and there may be some effort at comparison of the particular mineral deposit with others in the region or with those of similar depositional characteristics, but for the most part, the appraiser is relying on the corporate documents, tempered by his/her experience in the field. Time is usually of the essence, the cost for the assignment has been trimmed, and therefore independent verification of the various components comprising the underlying data base (legal review, redrilling portions of the deposit, collection of new samples, re-assaying, etc.) is unlikely in most situations.In the case of high-value commodities — gold, silver, diamonds, perhaps the platinum-group elements — there have been numerous examples of the property owners attempting to increase the value of their holdings by nefarious methods. Most of these involve salting the deposit in some fashion; i.e., introducing small amounts of the commodity into samples being sent to a laboratory for analysis so that the resultant assay shows a higher grade (Donaldson, 2002; Greeley, 2001; Lechler et al., 2008 and Meech, 2001). Other schemes to enhance the apparent worth of a property include the use of nonstandard assay procedures, incorrect handling or withholding of the underlying information, and false reporting."

Recent developments in portable communication equipment for use in emergency recovery work following mine fires and explosions have wade possible a convenient and dependable means of directing rescue teams working under hazardous conditions. INTRODUCTION Mine rescue and recovery operations following; fires and explosions are frequently conducted under adverse conditions that require the use of oxygen breathing apparatus by members of a 5- or 6-man team. Conventional apparatus used for this purpose for many years was equipped with an oxygen supply adequate for at least 2 hours. The design of the apparatus is such that the nose passages are closed with a clamp, and breathing is accomplished through a mouthpiece connected to the apparatus by tubes and arranged to prevent inhaling air or gases from outside sources. The use of the mouthpiece has presented difficulties in the development of telephone communication because of the wearer's inability to speak while wearing the mouthpiece. The method of conducting operations of rescue teams requires a person to direct operations at a fresh-air base as close to the rescue team as possible. At least one standby rescue team and 2 or 3 other persons assigned to various tasks are stationed at the fresh-air base. An efficient and reliable means of communication between the director of operations and the rescue team is necessary for reasonably safe and efficient work in hazardous areas.

INTRODUCTION GOLD-BEARING placers of Alaska and the Yukon Territories are buried under a layer of permanently frozen alluvial overburden, or 'muck', which varies in depth from twenty to one hundred feet. The placers, and the decomposed bedrock layers upon which they are deposited, are also permanently frozen. During the summer, surface muck which is exposed to the sun will thaw, but only to a depth of a few feet. To reach a valuable deposit, the frozen overburden must be either penetrated with shafts, or stripped from the deposit entirely. In either case, before the placer can be mined, it must be thawed. At modern dredging operations, the frozen muck is stripped from the placer by powerful jets of water from hydraulic giants. The placer, and several feet of decomposed bed-rock, are then thawed by forcing water through narrow pipes which have been driven into the deposit. Other methods of thawing frozen placers were used extensively during the early years of the Klondike 'gold rush', but experimentation later proved that creek water at its natural summer temperature was a more effective and economical thawing medium than any other which had been used. EVOLUTION OF COLD WATER THAWING Early prospectors of the far north reached placers by digging shafts through the frozen muck. They then thawed the placer sand and gravel by building wood fires at the bottom of the shafts.

It is believed that disc cutter shape affects rock fracture and therefore cutter performance and cutter life. However, the current generation of disc cutters is made of hardened steel and these cutters wear rapidly and consequently they are unable to maintain their original shape in strong and abrasive rock. This wear problem could be reduced if the cutter was made from a harder material. Unfortunately as material hardness increases so does the propensity for brittle failure. In this study the optimum cutter shapes were identified by studying the mechanics of rock/tool interaction. The results showed that bevel and wedge cutters are better than cutters with dome and flat edges. A new cutter was designed, based on this result, using a harder material to increase the life by a factor of 20.

"This paper presents an interim progress report on our recently begun research project on respirable dusts. We are reporting on a sophisticated, predictive, probably correct, testable hypothesis that postulates a mechanism by which some natively cytotoxic respirable size mineral particles, such as kaolin, are not harmful to the lungs, while other equally cytotoxic particles, such as quartz, are, even in small quantities, very harmful. In essence the hypothesis predicts that some mineral particles, not normally present in the earth's ambient dust, causes the lungs dust defense mechanisms to turn on the lung and harm it. However fruitful the hypothesis may be, it is a hypothesis and much work remains to be done before it can be accepted as a theory.While I may make the presentation and be the PI, my co-PI, Dr. William Wallace of NIOSH, has and will continue to make at least as much contribution to the project as I. Our sophisticated hypothesis is deeply scientifically based and unfortunately, in spite of the multifacited aspects of this project, there is virtually nothing in the literature to guide our work. This means we must go back to the classical physics to develop the models for calculating the powerful electrical effects near particle edges, and we must measure the fundamental biological constants associated with pulmonary macrophage. While there are daily discussions on Boltzman distributions, Einstein's Brownian Motion paper, the Nernst Equation, and sophisticated semi- in vivo biological time constant measurements, we are aware that this is not an easy problem and we are not likely to have irrefutable closed solutions to these problems by next Monday morning.HypothesisLet me now turn to our hypothesis. In order to occupy all the naturally occurring surface areas on the earth, man, during his long evolution from fish, had to evolve effective defenses against all the naturally occurring cytotoxic rcspirable mineral dusts. For example, clays, which are often the main component in naturally occurring respirable mineral dusts, are quite cytotoxic but do not harm the lung. However, for respirable mineral dusts that contain significant amounts of nonnaturally occurring but equally cytotoxic quartz and asbestos particles, the body has not had to evolve- an effective defense mechanism, and thus respirable mineral dusts containing these particles may harm the lung. Our hypothesis is, therefore, that a few nonambient minerals such as quartz, cause the bodies dust defensive system to harm the body in a manner analogous to Lupus or MS, diseases of the immune system."

"According to the geometrical characteristics of triangular meshes, Triangular Mesh Split Model (TMSM) based on a finite element method is proposed to simulate cracks propagation of fractured rock. With TMSM, stress intensity factors at the tip of cracks are obtained by far-field contour integral. Meanwhile, vector cross multiplication is adopted to fix the cracking unit, and maximum circumferential stress criterion is used to determine the crack propagation angle. Then crack dynamic propagation simulation is realized through local mesh split or node movement at crack tip. With this method, the crack can split apart a unit or extend along the mesh boundary, so the crack could extend along an arbitrary path and is not restricted by the initial mesh. The applicability of the mesh split algorithm is verified by the crack propagation examples of wing crack and multi-fractured rock mass with holes. The results show that this method not only has higher accuracy of fracture parameters calculation, but also can accurately simulate the crack initiation and propagation of rock under complex stress state such as tension, compression and shear. In addition, the far contour integral is introduced to determine the crack tip stress intensity factor and there is no need to reconstruct a singular element at the crack tip or to intensify the meshes. Compared with the existing mesh reconstruction algorithm, this method significantly improves the computational efficiency.INTRODUCTIONGenerally, rock is neither the full continuum, nor entirely discrete body, but rich in geological defects, such as joints and cracks. A large amount of geotechnical engineering practice shows that most fracture of rock is closely related to the internal joints, cracks and crack expansion (Horii et al., 1985; Wong et al., 1998). Although the classical theory of fracture mechanics established the theoretical foundation of crack initiation, propagation, so far it is still extremely difficult to characterize the propagation of airfoil-typed crack and the interference problem of multiple cracks. Up to now, the micromechanics mechanism research of crack propagation of fractured rocks has still been a hot research topic of rock fracture mechanics."

"A few situations are first reviewed where practical shortcuts lead to acceptable solutions where none seemed to be possible. These include: The solving of many complex sampling optimisation problems with the simple approach of the worst case policy (WCP). A simple approach to single-stage sampling problems will be mentioned at continuation. In the plants, minimising the impact of border effects in incorrect samplers, so that the resulting samples are approximately correct and acceptable in practice because the bias risk attached to them is controlled. "Mine tailings is one of the most important bulk industrial solid wastes, but its rate of comprehensive utilization is relatively low. Efficient separation, recovery and utilization of the valuable components is one focus of the comprehensive utilization of tailings. Beneficiation recovery of the valuable minerals is the most direct comprehensive utilization method for tailings. There are generally different kinds of nonmetallic minerals contained in the nonferrous metal mine tailings, which are secondary mineral resources waiting for further developing and recovery. Comprehensive utilization test studies on fluorite in tungsten beneficiation tailings and feldspar in molybdenum beneficiation tailings have been carried out by author and good test results are achieved. Some of the technologies developed in the test study have been applied in industrial productions, which have been working well. The economic, social and environmental benefits are remarkable. Our test studies and some production practices will be summarized and current situation and existing problems of comprehensive utilization for nonferrous metal mine tailings will also be discussed. It has been recognised worldwide that the liquefaction risk of unconstrained tailings stacks or cyclone underflow embankments requires careful consideration. The stability of a tailings deposit where the perimeter embankments are made up of hydraulic fill is often governed by post-liquefaction stability.Cyclones are frequently used around the world to classify tailings into a coarse underflow for building a tailings impoundment wall and a finer fraction that is disposed of into the basin. The shear strength of the tailings that form the outer embankment of a tailings storage facility (TSF) and the location of the phreatic surface are the two most significant factors influencing the structural integrity of the facility. The coarse underflow is placed in such a way as to contain the overflow, which is finer, has low strength and is often poorly consolidated.A cyclone field trial was undertaken at a gold mine in Western Australia to assess the feasibility of using the cyclone deposition method to optimise and increase the capacity of an existing tailings cell. The aim of the cyclone trial was to collect information to demonstrate to the client and the regulators that cyclone deposition was a feasible option for raising TSF embankments. The cyclone trial provided an opportunity to assess the cyclone under field conditions and the quantity and quality of the underflow fraction produced on-site. A variety of methods were used to assess the flow liquefaction susceptibility of the tailings underflow sample produced during the cyclone field trial.The field trial, laboratory testing and analysis will be discussed in this paper.CITATION:Boshoff, J and Reid, D, 2015. Introduction THE Sullivan mine and the milling, smelting, and refining operations of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company are sufficiently well known to make unnecessary anything more than a very brief account of the events which led up to this Company's branching out into the chemical industry. This development is the result of the 26 per cent sulphur content of the Sullivan ore. Seventy-five to eighty per cent of this sulphur enters the mill tailing, which is stocked at Kimberley. The remainder, contained in the lead and zinc concentrate, is burned off in the first treatments at Trail. Prior to this new development, the sulphur gas was wasted to the atmosphere. In spire of its great dilution with air and discharge from stacks at high elevations above the plant, some damage to vegetation close to the plant was experienced. It had always been apparent that this sulphur should be recovered and utilized if possible, at the same rime relieving, or curing, the smoke nuisance, and constant studies with this in view had, therefore, been maintained. One of the early conclusions reached was that the Canadian prairies would ultimately require large quantities of phosphate fertilizers, as had been the experience of older countries, and that these fertilizers would constitute a large outlet for sulphuric acid which could be made from smelter gases. This conclusion prompted a widespread search for phosphate rock, particularly in British Columbia and western Alberta, with the result that low-grade beds were discovered in the Crowsnest district and to the north therefrom through extensive areas (1). Following these discoveries, an experimental plant was built at Trail for the production of triple superphosphate in order to facilitate field-tests in fertilizing prairie lands.

"The valuable materials resulting from the processing of gold-bearing ores are often refractory to direct gold recovery through cyanidation. There are multiple methods for chemical liberation of gold prior to cyanidation such as pressure and biological oxidation as well as atmospheric oxidation which is typically used in combination with physical activation of material by ultrafine grinding such as the Albion ProcessTM. This paper will examine the data from process testworks carried out to estimate the efficiency of the Albion Process™ for the oxidation of materials with a wide composition range prior to cyanidation. The data will be compared to that obtained by direct cyanidation of the feed (without oxidation) and from the testing of pressure oxidation on the feed prior to cyanidation. Albion Process™ tests were conducted in Institute TOMS with participation of Glencore Technology Pty Ltd (Australia). Refractory concentrates obtained from the ores of several Russian and CIS deposits were used as feed for the testing. These concentrates were also subjected to a material composition study and testing using conventional recovery methods. The resulted test data make it possible to perform an integrated assessment of process properties for materials with different compositions, compare performance of various process flowsheets for the materials under study, and conclude on efficiency of Albion Process™ application for gold recovery from refractory materials different in their composition.INTRODUCTION It is often the case that gold ore concentrates are refractory to gold recovery by direct cyanidation. This refractory nature is as a rule attributable to fine gold dissemination in minerals, most often in pyrite and other sulphides, as well as to the increased amount of components impeding cyanide leaching of gold due to cyanide consumption and reducing process conditions. The refractoriness of the concentrates results in low gold recovery values when conventional cyanidation technology is used. In this context, various additional processes are applied to breakdown such refractory sulphide concentrates, i.e. mechanical breakdown (fine and ultrafine grinding), chemical breakdown (atmospheric oxidation, e.g. Leachox, acid-oxygen oxidation, pressure oxidation – POX, bacterial oxidation – BIOX), and thermochemical breakdown (various roasting methods). Such breakdown processes allow for increase in recovery of finely disseminated gold during the downstream cyanidation, however, their application is cost-intensive and does not always ensure economic benefit."

Coal gasification solid residue (slag) contains unconverted carbon (char), which is considered an impurity for utilization applications of slag. Under this study, table concentration was used to process approximately 24,000 pounds of a nominal-3.4 mm gasifier slag (-85% ash) to separate high (-100%) ash slag from low (-50%) ash char. The results indicated a nearly ideal separation of the slag from the char for sizes coarser than about 1 mm. An overall slag yield of 71 % was obtained. The slag was sufficiently clean to be used as feed material for the production of expanded lightweight aggregate. The recovered char had an ash content of about 47% and was a nominal -1mm in size.
