"In recent years coatings of alloys have been produced for a wide range of applications including many for wire bonding application. The main characteristic of the baths of electroless plating is the presence of sodium hypophosphite as a reducing agent and also as the supplier of phosphorus. In the electroplating of alloys the Watts bath is predominantly used. This presentation compares the two techniques, electroless plating and electroplating, and discusses the possibilities of cross utilization of sodium hypophosphite in an attempt to formulate baths that eliminate the waste disposal issue related to some components.INTRODUCTIONThe importance of surface characteristics and the linkage of surface coating process to surface characterization has given rise to the evolution of surface engineering. Not only the surface preparation and morphology has become very important to the coating technology but also the knowledge of surface area exposed to the process of coating or corrosion is absolutely essential in ascertaining the behaviour of coatings and their adherence to the substrate. The above concepts are not unknown to researchers involved in the protection of surfaces, particularly metallic, from corrosion and/or erosion corrosion. However, the complexity of the surface defects, roughness, porosity, interconnected porosity and other related factors have contributed to the uncertainty of the true surface area versus the nominal surface area. Therefore critical parameters such as current density and chemical surface intensity although have been studied extensively at the atomistic level by carefully prepared surfaces are very difficult to be determined at the practical scale required during the coating processes.The most pronounced case calling for an understanding the relationship between the surface area and the effective protection is the coating of surfaces of items produced by compression or consolidation of powdery materials. With the advent of nanomaterials and the additive manufacturing through 3D metal printing this issue is becoming more important. Certain experience in this field come from the accumulated knowledge resulted from the attempts to characterize the electrochemical behaviour of powder metallurgy metals and alloys. Powder metallurgy has been a well-established process for half a century on basic metals such as iron, copper and their alloys. Recently the development of powder metallurgy process for aluminum, titanium and attempts to develop powder metallurgy processes for magnesium and its alloys has brought to light another important issue that of the development of coatings on difficult to plate reactive metals such as aluminum and magnesium. Despite of many successes in the development of powder metallurgy alloys the exact characterization of the corrosion behaviour of the coatings and the substrates is difficult to determine because of the unknown morphology of the exposed area i.e. the exact morphology and area of the exposed surface (Samal, 2007)."

Top blow injection has been applied to continuous copper smelting and converting by Mitsubishi Materials Corporation since 1974. In this process, injected feeds are captured by and dispersed in the molten bath immediately and effectively, and the reaction is enhanced by the agitation of the bath. The continuous motion of the molten bath, however, may cause severe damage of furnace lining materials, if the injection is not controlled and the furnace is not designed properly. In order to suppress refractory wear, especially at the bath line, surface wave of the molten bath should be moderated. A cold model study was carried out with water bath in a cylindrical vessel and the physical model was derived which correlates the oscillation of gas jet impingement on the bath surface and the surface wave. It was found that a half of the proper frequency of the gas jet impingement coincides the proper frequency of the surface wave.

An advanced laboratory-scale weathering apparatus has been developed at McGill University to study the effects of weathering (ambient temperature oxidation) on the self-heating of sulphides. Previous work by the authors has shown that the problematic self-heating of sulphides is inherently linked to the degree of oxidation (weathering) of the minerals: un-oxidized active sulphides exhibit little or no self-heating while the same material when weathered can generate extensive self-heating bringing temperatures well above 100 0C. In this study the effects of environmental conditions (weathering time, ambient temperature, sample moisture, relative humidity, and oxygen content) were evaluated with respect to the self-heating response of a pentlandite-pyrrhotite nickel sulphide concentrate.

The extractive mineral industries share a number of common characteristics and basic problems which are completely different from those associated with manufacturing and mercantile operations. These industries now supply about 95% of the inanimate energy consumed in this country, and share with agriculture in providing virtually all of our basic raw materials. Mineral producers, like farmers, are subject to the economic hazards of fluctuating markets and prices. Unlike farmers, however, they cannot renew the productivity of the earth, but must seek continually for new sources of supply. The necessity for exploration and development of new reserves, to replace those used up by production, introduces additional factors of economic risk. These operations require the expenditure of large amounts of capital, often well in advance of any assurance of profitability. Commercial banks that understand these special problems can provide a variety of constructive financial services to the mineral industries. The history of cooperation between banks and mining enterprises has yet to be written, but there is every indication that it would encompass a period of hundreds of years. Records refer to depository and lending services by the early European private bankers involving precious metals and jewels. Many of the exploratory voyages to the Far East and the New World were organized with the financial backing of wealthy syndicates, some of which also provided banking services, in the hope of finding new sources of gold and other precious minerals. In the United States many large banks are closely identified with the development of some of the larger mineral deposits such as the Mesabi Range and the gold fields of California.

Reflected light microscopic (RLM) examination of dust particles from lead and copper smelters can effectively characterize their mineralogy, texture, and origin. Scanning electron microscopic-energy dispersive spectroscopic (SEM-EDS) analysis provides confirmation of the optical identifications and chemical data on the phases. Studied lead smelter dust samples were from the: I) blast furnace, 2) sinter plant scrubber, 3) sinter plant crusher, 4) dross furnace, and 5) refinery. Phases identified included galena fragments, melted PbS, metallic Pb and Cu, Cu-Ni, Cu-Zn, Zn-Ag, Zn-Cu-Ag, Ni-Cu-Sb, and Ni-Cu-Zn-Ag metal alloys, Ni-sulfide, Cu-sulfide, and Cu-Pb-sulfide dross .phases; slag and sinter particles, coke fragments, unreacted original feed phases: pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, siegenite, bravoite; and oxidized particles: iss, bornite, chalcocite, covellite, magnetite, hematite, and goethite. Dust from a secondary copper refinery were found by RLM and SEM to consist of tenorite, cuprite, cassiterite, two silicate phases. Magnetite, hematite, Fe-Al-Cr-Mg spinel, periclase, forsterite, and wollastonite were derived from the furnace linings during initial cleaning.

O aço inoxidável austenítico 316 (316 SS) é um dos materiais metálicos mais utilizados em aplicações médicas devido à combinação de propriedades mecânicas e do baixo custo. No entanto, desgaste e corrosão estimulam mudanças permanentes no tecido humano que podem levar à perda do implante. O desenvolvimento de recobrimentos biocompatíveis e estáveis, que apresentem propriedades mecânicas adequadas, e que não sofram ruptura ou delaminação durante o uso, é uma solução muito promissora para melhorar o desempenho do 316 SS como biomaterial para implantes. Neste trabalho, uma liga intermetálica FeAlCr, que tem apresentado propriedades adequadas para a aplicação como biomaterial, foi utilizada como recobrimento sobre um aço inoxidável 316 de grau médico. O revestimento foi obtido utilizando-se a técnica magnetron sputtering por corrente contínua. Os parâmetros de deposição, como distância substrato - alvo e pressão de gás argônio foram mantidos fixos em 50 mm e 5 mTorr, respectivamente. As amostras foram preparadas com os seguintes valores de potência de sputtering: 50 W, 75W, 100 W e 150 W. A adesão dos filmes foi analisada por teste de scratch, enquanto a espessura e a taxa de deposição foram analisadas por perfilometria ótica. As características estruturais foram analisadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura com EDS.

Preceded by brief general considerations such as the development of the mining industry in. the Province of Quebec, the choice of plant location, the types of problems studied etc., the paper gives a complete description of this new research and treatment center for metallic, non-metallic and asbestos ores. Facilities for carrying out operations in the three sections of the plant -the sampling section, the ore treatment section and the asbestos section -are fully discussed as well as laboratory facilities for (a) the preliminary testing of ores prior to pilot plant treatment and (b) the grading and testing of asbestos fibre. SOME of the reactions and procedures upon which modern techniques in the production of metal powders are based were used for 2000 years by the ancients to reduce iron and other metals from their ores. Despite this, however, the art of powder metallurgy is relatively new and probably stems from the introduction of incandescent electric lamp filaments. Attempts to improve upon Edison's carbon filaments led to the production, in order. of metallic filaments of osmium. tantalum.. and finally of tungsten, which ha, replaced the others and is the commercial product of today. These metallic filaments were originally manufactured by the extrusion and sintering of a mixture of the metal or its oxide with a reducing agent which also served as a binder. Most of the arsenic contained in copper concentrates is removed in the gas phase during the smelting and converting processes and, according to recent environmental regulations, it is required to fix it in a solid stable form. In this regards, ferric arsenate has been reported as thermal and aqueous stable compound. Therefore, various alternatives for treating gas containing arsenic were considered in this work. From data obtained at laboratory scale on fixation of arsenic using iron oxide, a new process to treat copper concentrates containing arsenic was evaluated. The effect of temperature, oxygen potential and the sample porosity on the fixation of arsenic contained in a gaseous stream was studied, and the iron oxide converted into ferric arsenate was up to 10%. The obtained results suggest a new alternative for gas treatment with an interesting and attractive technical development. The arsenic was retained as ferric arsenate with thermal and aqueous stability, and it allows a safe disposal keeping the environmental restrictions. The kinetics parameters are used to scale up laboratory results to higher processing rates.

FEATURES of the second fall meeting of the Petroleum Division for 1941, held at the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles, Oct. 29-30, were the forum on the Paloma Plan on Thursday after- noon, the large attendance from east of the Rockies, and the dinner on Wednesday evening sponsored by the Southern California Section and at which President Suman spoke on the strategic minerals and metals situation. The attendance was large and the technical fare uniformly good ; the presiding officers had the proceedings well in hand at all times and kept things humming. Some- times it was necessary to taper off the discussion because of pressure on time. All this was due to careful groundwork before the respective sessions. These presiding officers deserve citation: L. W. Huebel, Howard Pyle, E. K. Parks, Carlton Beal, E. G. Trostel. R. W. French, Jr., John Dodge, and H. N. Marsh. The Los Angeles local commit- tees and the Southern California Section deserve much credit for the arrangements, which were recognized by suitable resolutions at the end of the meeting.

STUDIES of ground movement and subsidence caused by mining necessarily chiefly deal with causes and effects of making extensive excavations underground with spans beyond the strength of the un- supported or temporarily timbered roof or hanging wall. Perhaps no other phase of engineering is so de- pendent for results upon the assemblage of what may be called "experience data." That this is the case is cot surprising when one considers the number of variables involved in any at- tempted mathematical formula to determine the angle of draw or the angle of permanent slope of the rocks in any particular case. It is not like dealing with construction materials in which, through testing of. small specimens, in conjunction with the tests of large built- up specimens, relative stresses and strains may be deter- mined and formulas closely approximated for still larger constructions.

THE name of Swedish charcoal iron will probably bring to the memory of many old consumers an extremely tough and ductile iron which was formerly used in considerable quantities for common blacksmith purposes. To-day very little of this iron goes to such kind of work. Swedish charcoal iron is merely a speciality which is chosen whenever its remark¬able properties can be utilized. By giving a rough sketch of the manufacturing process of Swedish charcoal iron, the character of the iron, its weak as well as its strong points will more easily be understood. Swedish charcoal iron is a wrought iron also known in the United States under the name of Norway iron and Swedish Lancashire iron. The name Norway iron seems to have been attached to the product for the reason that in the earlier days it was generally brought into the States by Norwegian ships. However no iron of this kind is now made in Norway. The reason for the name Swedish Lancashire iron is that the manufac¬turing process emanated from Lancashier in England, the method being generally adopted in Sweden in the years 1831-1850. Today this iron is, with the exception of one plant in the United States, made in no place in the world outside of Sweden.

Mixtures of silver chloride and copper chloride are produced during gold refining by the Miller process. A study was carried out into the reduction with iron of a synthetic Miller chloride containing 13.64 mass% Ag and 2.42 mass% Cu. The effects of smelting temperature and time and of additions of iron and borax were investigated. The results were interpreted in terms of metal recovery and quality. Temperature did not have a significant effect on metal recovery above the melting point of the metal product. Borax additions reduced vapour losses and improved metal recovery. With excess iron it was possible to achieve silver recoveries of about 100% and copper recoveries of about 70%. The metal product contained on average 76.1 mass% Ag, 7.5 mass% Cu and 12.8 mass% Fe.

T HE Mysore iron works, at Bhadravati, about 2000 ft. above sea level in the Shimoga district of Mysore, British India, is served by a meter gage branch line of the Mysore State Railways. The works which were designed and erected by Perin & Marshall, who still act as consulting engineers, are surrounded by a thickly wooded country which sup- plies about 400 tons per day of wood for fuel. The ore deposits lie 20 miles to the south, and limestone quarries are close by the works. The Bhadra river sup- plies the works and the town with the necessary quantity of water. DURING the year just closed the bituminous industry has been marked by a continuation of the period of low prices and a steady deflation, accompanied by the closing of mines and the consolidation of small units into larger ones. This pro- gram has marked almost every field in the country, and it bids fair to continue for some time. Some figures recently published for Kentucky show that in 1924 there were 660 mines producing 45,147,000 tons; in 1928 the number had decreased to 537, while production had increased to 61,860,000 tons, and a similar movement is occurring all over the country. Prices throughout the early part of the year were very low, but during the fall and winter the prices received are more satisfactory than they were earlier in the year. One of the leading developments in the marketing of coal during the year was the trade practice movement, which began in the Harlan field, and has now been adopted in the Harlan, Hazard, Appalachian, Logan. Williamson and Kanawha fields. The purpose of this movement is to prevent the shipment of coal except on order, and by the publication of price lists to prevent much senseless price quotation. Where it has been practised the longest this movement has resulted in a considerable degree of stabilization, and, undoubtedly, it will help existing conditions very materially if it becomes universal.

PLAGER gold is perhaps the most difficult of the common mineral deposits to evaluate. Not only are the erratic pay streaks a source of never-ending uncertainty, but the spotty distribution of the gold in iso¬lated nuggets is a perpetual source of error and disappointment to the sampler. Experienced engineers have long realized this difficulty and have been wary in predicting assay values except in the most general terms, and then only after extensive and usually expensive sampling. During the past year I have had the opportunity of checking a number of gold placers, and from the results obtained I believe that the microscope may be employed to advantage in placer sampling.

The distribution behavior of VA minor elements (As, Sb and Bi) in the smelting stage of the Mitsubishi process were evaluated thermodynamically based on thermodynamic data and operating data. The fractional distributions between the gas, slag and matte phases considered as the degree of vapor saturation of l.0 are as follows: 53.8, 27.2 and 19% for As, 23.6, 56.6 and 19.8% for Sb, and 91.3, l.1 and 7.6% for Bi, respectively. Arsenic is mostly distributed to the gas and slag phases. It is effectively eliminated by volatilizing and slagging. Antimony is mainly in the slag phase, which is suitably removed by slagging. Bismuth is easily vaporized to gas phase. The degree of vapor saturation has a large effect on the distribution behaviors of the three elements between the three phases. The amount of a minor element in the charge has an effect on the distribution of As but no effect on the distributions of Sb and Bi. Increasing matte grade and temperature results in the change of distributions for As and Sb, significantly. The change in the distribution ratio between slag and matte phases also considerably affects the distributions of As and Sb. The distribution behavior of Bi is not significantly changed by the change in matte grade, temperature and distribution ratio.

MORE than one-third of all Canada is embraced in the federal domain known as the Northwest Territories. Its most northern point, Cape Columbia, on Ellesmere Island, is only 500 mi. from the Pole. It includes parts of the main physiographic divisions of the North American continent. In the West there is a strip of 30.000 sq. mi. lying in the Cordilleran region, where peaks in the Mackenzie Mountains rise as high as 8500 ft. East of this strip and extending roughly to a line through Great Bear and Great Slave lakes to the Arctic coast is a section of the interior plains. This section, known as the Mackenzie Lowlands, contains the great artery, the most striking feature of the Northwest Territories-the Mackenzie and Slave river waterway impressive in its width, almost two miles in places, and in it's navigability for 1357 miles without obstruction to the sea. Adjoining the Mackenzie Lowlands on the East is the greater portion of the mainland of the Territories, which, as well as a large share of the island area, is in the Canadian Shield.

The extraction of gold and silver from chalcopyrite concentrates has been investigated. In view of the recent interest in non-cyanide leachants for gold and silver, one such alternative reagent, namely thiourea, has been employed in the present work. Precious metal leaching was attempted from received copper concentrates as well as pre-oxidised concentrates. Pre-oxidation of the concentrates was carried out by three different methods, namely roasting, pressure oxidation and biological oxidation. After pre-oxidation and leaching of the base metals, the leach residues were subjected to further leaching for precious metal extraction. The results obtained on the extraction of gold and silver from received concentrates as well as pre-oxidised concentrates are presented and the effectiveness of the three pre-oxidation routes employed is compared.
