A semi-automatic device has been constructed that can be used to check the solution strength of cyanide solutions. It consists of a wheel on which a gold-foil-bearing glass slide is mounted. The wheel moves the gold foil through the solution under test and intercepts a light beam. As the gold foil is attacked by the cyanide solution its light absorption diminishes. The successive in-crease in transmitted light intensity is recorded and gives a measure of the gold dissolution rate. Curves have been obtained to show the effect of cyanide concentration and oxygen content on dissolution rates. The two HYFIFLUX cruises of the German RV SONNE (SO 99/1995 and SO 134/1998) were organized in the framework of a co-operation between several German universities and two European marine research partners. It is a multidisciplinary program for the study of hydrothermalism with its associated geological, mineralogical, and biological processes in the North Fiji Basin (NFB) in the SW-Pacific. The main achievements of the HYFIFLUX cruises were detailed multibeam Hydrosweep mapping in order to identify the detailed tectonic setting, water sampling at hydrothermally active vents, mineral sampling at inactive sites with sulfide, sulfate, and silica mineralizations, and sampling of basaltic rocks, (Halbach et al. 1999). Oceanic accretion in the NFB is characterized by a double spreading system (Auzende et al. 1994),with one spreading axis located in the median part of the basin (Central Fiji Ridge, CFR) and the second one located immediately west of the Fiji platform (West Fiji Ridge). Most of our investigations were done in the northern part of the N 15° segment of the CFR, which corresponds to area A of our program, area D is located farther south in the NFB and corresponds to the N-S segment of the CFR (Fig. 1). During previous works under the French-Japanese STARMER project, the active ?White Lady? mound and the extinct Père Lachaiseí site were sampled; these samples were studied by Bendel et al. 1993. Here an inactive hydrothermal field was studied, where there were many sediment-covered chimneys in various stages of disintegration, (Bendel et al. 1993). "Srnoky River Coal is capable ofprocessing 3 million tonnes per year ofrun-of-mine coal at the Smoky River Coal preparation facilities to produce 2.1 million tonnes of high quality, low volatile coking coal for export markets. Multi-seam surface and underground mining operations are scheduled to maintain raw coal feed to the plant. Two beneficiating circuits wash the coal. A heavy medium cyclone circuit cleans the plus 0.5 mm coal and a froth flotation circuit cleans the minus 0.5 mm coal. Clean coal is thermally dried, loaded into unit trains, treated for dust suppression, and transported to west coast port facilitiesf or export. Plant by-products are used as thermal fuel Jn an adjacent power station. Quality control procedures ensure efficient resource recovery for a yield of uniform specification product, at a 7% ash level. Introduction Smoky River Coal operates surface and underground mines in the Smoky River coalfield. Approximately 3 million tonnes per year (mt/ a) of run-of-mine (ROM) coal can be processed at the coal preparation plant to provide 2.1 mt/ a of clean, high quality, low volatile bituminous coking coal. Coal is processed by heavy media and froth flotation cleaning circuits and is thermally dried.Raw Coal Characteristics The characteristics of the ROM coal, both in terms of quality and size consistency, vary with intrinsic seam qualities and mining methods employed. The two seams mined (No. 4 and No. 10) show distinctly different washability characteristics. Seam No. 4 contains relatively few middlings and can be readily cleaned by dense-medium cyclones and froth flotation to give a clean coal at specification ash content. Seam No. JO is more difficult to wash, and the ash content of the clean coal is higher than No. 4 seam at the same operating conditions. However, when the upper I m is excluded from the plant feed, the remaining lower section has washability characteristics similar to No. 4 seam. Coal mined by underground means sometimes contains caprock and consequently tends to be dirtier than similar coal mined by surface means."

"INTRODUCTIONNSCC International Ltd. carried out the enabling works and constructed the foundation system for the Emirates Pearl Tower and Bab El Qasr Hotel in Abu Dhabi. Emirates Pearl Tower is a joint venture project of TDIC- Tourism Development and Investment Company and ATLAS group, a leading telecommunication company in the UAE. Bab El Qasr Hotel is a project of EMROC Emirate-Moroccan General Trading & Investment Company. The combined enabling project is executed under the combined management of JACOBS International Holdings Inc. and NASSAR Engineering Services.The project is located to the south-east of Emirates Palace and west of Etihad towers, at about 20m away from the sea shore. Since the two projects are located next to each other a combined shoring system was constructed for the entire area. This decision was based on an agreement with clients and consultants of the two projects and resulted in significant savings for both parties. The shoring system consisted mainly of diaphragm wall with ground anchors and steel struts. Cantilever secant piles were used on the eastern side of the plot, adjacent to Etihad Towers` basement.PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF WORKNSCC International Ltd. was responsible for the design, procurement and construction of strutted and anchored diaphragm walls and cantilever secant piles. Quantitative analysis of minerals composing in ore is primary in process mineralogy, a veracious quantification and analysis is very crucial to optimize or design a beneficiation process, especially for a low grade and complicated ore. This paper will discuss a SEM-EDS based quantitative analysis developed in JKtech Australia through an example from Jinchuan lean ore. For a low grade, com-plex intergrowths and texture lean ore, chemical phase analysis of value minerals and identification by optical microscope are very essential, unite the SEM-EDS based quantitative analysis, we can understand exactly the lean ore, explain and quantify the process performance.

"In the Dongri Buzurg Manganese Mine of M/s Manganese Ore (India) Ltd., high grade lumpy manganese ore required for iron and steel industries is produced through multi-stage crushing and screening. This has resulted in accumulation of 50,000 tonnes of low grade fines over the years. This production of such fines is still going on. The fines create environmental problems, like air and water pollution and siltation in adjoining fields. Besides containing lot of manganese values, they occupy large space which is very scare in mining area.The Indian Bureau of Mines under one of its statutory functions has suggested the company to explore the possibility of recovery of additional values under conservation and environmental aspects. Hence the company has sponsored a bulk sample for beneficiation studies in the Modern Mineral Processing Laboratory and Pilot Plant of Indian Bureau of Mines at Nagpur, India. The main manganese minerals present in these mine rejects have been identified as pyrolusite and psilomelane. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of evolving a suitable beneficiation flowsheet to obtain manganese concentrates assaying over 72% MnO2 to be used as raw material for the manufacture of dry cell batteries.The sample/material was subjected to characterisation studies in terms of chemical analysis, granulometry and mineralogical compositions. Based on these characterisation studies, the beneficiation process developed comprised of desliming, jigging and low intensity magnetic separation mainly to reject quartz, silicates and jacobsite. The manganese concentrate thus produced assayed 70.2% MnO2 with MnO2 recovery of 78% and weight per cent yield of 63.5. This natural concentrate could be mixed with the electrolytic manganese dioxide produced by the company and this blend can thus be used as a raw material for the manufacture of dry cell batteries by the end users. The paper deals with the details of test work carried out in evolving the process flowsheet."

"Electrowinning of copper by monopolar cells require common anode and cathode busbar and crossbars to connect each electrode to the respective common busbar. On the other hand, the bipolar configuration warrants the end electrodes only to be connected to busbars; there is substantial reduction in copper requirement. In the present work, an electrowinning cell with bipolar electrodes and end electrodes, each having an area of 1000 cm2 was designed and operated. The bipolar electrode is made of mixed metal oxide coated titanium mesh welded to plain titanium sheet. Coated titanium mesh acts as anode and the plain titanium sheet acts as cathode. Environmentally unacceptable lead anode and the recurring loss of lead are done away with. Closer spacing of the electrodes, paves way for the application of higher current density leading to mass transfer enhancement. Performance of bipolar copper electrowinning cell is reported.1. IntroductionThe normally adopted practice in electrowinning of copper is the conventional monopolar configuration. In this practice, the individual electrodes act either as anode or cathode. Hence there is a need to connect every one of the electrodes to the common anode or cathode busbar and crossbars running across the top of the cell are necessary. The common busbar carries very high current which is divided among the individual crossbars and hence has to be thicker in relation to the current load of the cell. The drawback of the need to use common busbars of thicker cross section and the need to have crossbars are obviated in the bipolar configuration."

Extraction of gold and silver from two refractory concentrates using cyanide and bromine reagents was reported at the 12th International Precious Metal Conference (1). The objective of this paper is to present the gold extraction, recovery, and economics for two refractory concentrates using cyanide and bromine reagents. Gold extractions for cyanide leaching (24- 48 hours) and bromine leaching (6 hours) were the same and ranged from 94% to 96%. Gold recoveries from bromine pregnant solutions using carbon adsorption, ion exchange, solvent extraction, and zinc and aluminum precipitation methods, were better than 99.9%. A preliminary economic analysis indicates that chemical costs? for cyanidation and bromine process are $9.50 and $10.50, respectively per ton of calcine processed.

LABOR disputes caused considerable turbulence in the coal mining industry during 1946. As an outcome of these disputes, a definitely fundamental change in safety procedure was instituted: establishment of safety regultions for coal mines through the agency of agreements between the miners' union and the agency or agencies operating the coal mines. Although a temporary plan at present, the future will determine the. extent to which it may become permanent. Notwithstanding the turmoil in the industry extending through much of the year, the safety record for the first eleven months of 1946 was the best in the history of the industry for that period. The fatality rate for 1946 is lower than in any other year in the history of coal mining in the United States. This follows a pattern inasmuch as new low coal-mine fatality records were also made in 1945, 1944, and 1943. The five-year period 1942 to 1946 inclusive has a coal-mining fatality rate far lower than any other five-year period in the history of the industry. It is significant that this period exactly coincides with the operation of Federal coal mine inspection which got under way early in 1942.

NO one questions that it is technically possible to achieve the controlled release of atomic energy in a form that can be converted into heat or electricity. However, before this is actually an accomplished fact a great amount of work must .be done. This work falls into two general classifications: research and engineering development. At present a research program is under way in this country, co-ordinated and directed by the Atomic Energy Commission, which, as time goes on, will uncover fundamental knowledge of this new science that is essential before industrial applications of atomic energy are practical. Undoubtedly therefore, as the store of available knowledge increases, a time will come when answers to the many questions relating to practicality of atomic energy in industry can be determined with reasonable certainty. That the application of atomic energy in industry will eventually be proved practical is assumed. What then are the engineering problems that must be solved before the first practical electric power generating station can be built?

THE increasing demand for greater speed and more accuracy, in making daily assays of ores and products from mills treating material containing but very small quantities of lead and copper, has caused the older analytical methods to be supplanted by new ones devised to meet the needs of modern work. For " control " work in copper analyses, I had, previous to the present equipment, introduced in my laboratory the ordinary electrolytic method, using hollow cylindrical electrodes, and with these I began a series of experiments in determining the lead-content of daily mill-samples and controls. The results, proving accurate and satisfactory, I then devised, with Mr. H. E. T. Haultain, a cheaper electrode than the ordinary jacket electrode, which costs from $15 to $20,-the expense of the older form making the installation of many units very costly. The form of cathode finally adopted as the most satisfactory, shown in Fig. 1, is cut from 0.001-in. platinum foil. It is 12.5 cm. long, and is divided into a blade 4 cm. wide and 6.25 cm. long, and a tongue 0.7 cm. wide and 6.25 long, the immersion area being 50 sq. cm. and weight 1.5 grams. The blade is first sand-blasted and then corrugated lengthwise, in order to impart the necessary rigidity. Strips of platinum foil 0.001 in. thick, 12.5 cm. long and 0.5 cm. wide, having a median corrugation, form the anodes. Three electrodes are used in each cell, one anode in the middle and one cathode oil each side of the anode. These electrodes are connected to slotted alumi¬num terminals, in which they are held by contact pressure. The terminals are -in. rods, projecting 2 in. horizontally in front of the wall of the cabinet.; at the back the middle electrode (anode) is connected with one pole of the current, and the two outer ones (cathodes) with the other pole.

EXCEPTING the joint sessions on gases in metals held during the day on Tuesday, the Institute of .Metals opened its activities with a division dinner at the Commodore on Tuesday evening, with Sam Tour, retiring chairman, presiding. W. M. Corse, secretary-treasurer, outlined the financial status of the division and stated the investment fund is becoming large enough so that in the near future it will be possible to pay all expenses of a foreign lecturer once in two years and not rely on an extended speaking tour to cover expenses. W. B. Price reported on his attendance at the Zurich, Switzerland, meeting of the International Society of Testing Materials and gave a graphic account of his visit to the Grand Salon, his meeting with Mussolini, and his audience with the Pope. Buffalo was announced as the place of the fall meeting, to be held during the week of Oct. 3.

SELECTIVE SERVICE must meet three important demands for man power: (1) Activities concerned with production of war goods. (2) The armed forces. (3) Civilian activities and institutions the continuance of which are essential to maintaining the structure of our American democracy. In the above enumeration of demands I have placed everything, including most of our most prized possessions and activities, after the demand for men for war production and the armed forces. To establish an order between the latter two is difficult. For the time being, at least, the Selective Service policy is to make sure that we avoid the risk of "too little and too late." No soldier, sailor, or marine should be sent from these shores to risk his life without the assurance of having a gun, clothes, food, and medical supplies. Therefore, the premium is now being placed on man power for war production and in our process of selection no stone is left unturned to see that our agencies are fully informed of the needs of war production. Our procedures set up recourses for employers of war-production man power so that their activities need not be disrupted, at least not until they have had time to train replacements.

THE mineral industries in this country have now had about a year of national planning. Al. though the period is short, the volume of activity and legislation designed to make that planning effective has been nothing short of enormous. Those who have been privileged to see and study a few of the codes to regulate our mineral industry, such as those for oil, coal, steel, and copper, are driven to the conclusion that nothing was really known about the proper way to conduct those industries in this country prior to June, 1933; or if anything was known, nobody in actual practice made use of that knowledge. And yet those industries, in days gone by, helped to make this country the most prosperous in the world, and to maintain a standard of living even today higher than that of any other country. Without wishing to assume any first-hand knowledge of the Russian standard of living, I must confess that the evidence seems to indicate that even with dictatorial authority, national planning encounters unexpected difficulties. THE little coal mine at Otsego, in the Winding Gulf field of southern West Virginia was dying. In the history of coal mining thousands of mines have been successful at first, but usually a change occurred and profits ceased. Often be change was so gradual and extended over such a length of time that the fundamental causes did not stand out in sharp relief and their significance was not realized. Studies often reveal that the cause for failure was in the arteries that connect the producing places with the mine entrance. Profits continued so long as the working places were close to the tipple and while the thrill of newness aid ease of access resulted in effective supervision from day to day. The air- way and haulageway, the wire line and manway, may have been sufficient when the distance from the entrance was a few hundred feet, but were inadequate when this was extended for thousands of feet.
