Improve the strength and other properties of steel alloys. Approach Research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines indicates that steels melted and solidified under high nitrogen pressure acquire yield and tensile strengths that are up to four times the strengths of comparable stainless steel alloys without nitrogen. Fatigue strength, creep strength, and other mechanical properties are also improved. Strengthening occurs by two mechanisms: (1) increasing dissolved nitrogen in the lattice and (2) formation of dispersed metal nitride phases. Nitrogen Alloying Nitrogen alloying of a steel is generally done by introducing metal nitrides during melting of the steel. The concentration of nitrogen is limited to its equilibrium solubility at 1 atmosphere. For face-centered-cubic (fee) iron, that solubility is approximately 0.4 weight percent (wt%). For body-centered-cubic (bee) iron, solubility is 0.05 wt%. This solubility limitation can be overcome by melting the metal in a pressurized vessel. European steelmakers currently have metal-processing systems that can melt and pour tons of steel under nitrogen pressures exceeding 4 megapascals (MPa) (40 atmospheres). They have achieved nitrogen concentrations as high as 1.0 wt% in these (stainless) steels. The tensile strength is approximately twice the tensile strength of similar steels without nitrogen.

Gilsonite is a brittle, natural solid bituminous resin, classified as an asphaltite. It is found in near-vertical veins in the Uintah Basin of Eastern Utah. Discovered well over 100 years ago by Samuel Gilson, this unique material has, since its finding, enjoyed a variety of commercial and industrial applications. Early uses for the product included black automotive paint and beer vat linings. Among its many important uses today are additives for oil well drilling fluids and cements, additives for sand castings for the foundry industry, reinforcing agent for asphalt pavements, and dispersing agent for black inks. Gilsonite is mined and processed in Bonanza, Utah, by two companies, American Gilsonite Company (AGC), an operating division of Chevron Resources, and Ziegler Chemical, a privately held company headquartered in New York.

At projecting mining-concentrating complex at the deposit ?Zapadnoye? (Russia) it was considered to enable an opportunity of refusal from conventional SAG-mills. First time a scheme of gold bearing ore destruction using Roller Press RP 5-100/90 had been developed and integrated. The plant was launched in summer 2003 and presently it has achieved designed technological parameters, processing throughput comes to 1 million tons of the ore per year.

"The development of certain mines in the East Tintic mining district, Utah, has been hindered considerably by the presence in the rock strata of heavy irrespirable gases which at times flood the lowest working places, as well as by abnormally high rock temperatures in the lower horizons. A study of these features was completed in the spring of this year, and the information obtained is summarized here.Heavy gases.Only four mines have been affected to date by the presence of heavy gas, and only one of these is producing lead-silver ores in quantity. These four embrace a territory extending about three miles north and south and about two miles east and west, while both within and fringing on this territory are a number of prospects which have not been affected.Thus far no fatalities have resulted from gas inflows, but a number of men have been temporarily overcome, and a few have had narrow escapes from death by suffocation. That the record is not more serious is mainly due to the fact that the gas inflow, as a rule, is relatively slow, mining operations have been quite carefully conducted, and the presence and extent of a gas inflow can be easily determined by its extinguishing action on the flame of miners' lights.When first encountered, about 1910, gas inflows occasioned much lost time. In some months the lost time averaged as much as ten days, while one mine cites for a certain month a maximum of 26 days lost out of a possible 28 working days. With improvements in mechanical ventilation and the passing of time, interference with work from the presence of gas has gradually lessened. During the last few winters, the main trouble has been with the mines being flooded with gas overnight when fans were not operated, although men have been driven out of the lowest development openings several times each winter with fans operating. At present, the main danger is in the lowest development openings having only one exit, wherein men might be trapped and possibly suffocated during an unusual and extremely rapid inflow of gas, or during an ordinary inflow, should the one source of power for the fan be disabled."

Ironically, many of these characteristics are rewarded in business organizations, which may explain why there seems to be so many narcissists in management positions. Assuming we will be dealing with narcissists throughout our career, it makes sense for us to understand what makes them tick, and more importantly what we can do to work with them in a constructive manner.

The metallurgical treatment of mercury-containing materials for precious or base metals recovery imposes many processing and environmental challenges. Mercury is usually present as elemental or cinnabar. Historically, mercury has been removed from mined ores pyrometallurgically by roasting, but hydrometallurgical methods have also been employed. For example, alkaline sodium sulfide solution acts as an universal solvent for most mercury compounds. While, most other metals are highly insoluble in this solution. This allows for a high degree of selective separation of mercury from other metals with the exception of tin, antimony and arsenic. Mercury leached with a solution of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide or sulfur can be re-covered by cementation or stabilized through sulfide precipitation. Hydrometallurgical technology for the pretreatment of mercury removal from gold, silver, and base metal ores using alkaline sulfide leaching will be discussed with a focus on alkaline sulfide leaching of mercury sulfide-containing materials.

"The Chibougamau Explorers property comprises 35 claims or 1,726 acres in La Dauversiere and Rohault Townships along the west shore of Norhart Lake. The property is serviced by a twelve-mile all-weather high-way leaving the main St. Felicien-Chibougamau highway at mileage 121. This road junction will be a railway siding on the C.N.R. St. Felicien-Chibougamau branch line in early 1957. The property lies 30 miles due south from the town of Chibougamau. The mine-sponsored Chibougamau Explorers town has a population of 250 with 28 residences and a well equipped recreation centre.The original showing was found by Rider Storn, a prospector financed by Val d'Or interests during the 1950 field season. This showing did not stand up to detailed prospecting but it did lead to the discovery of the main zone by A. Oakley during the following winter.The company was incorporated in I 950 under the presidency of E. Ayrhart. Financing following the initial drilling involved an increase of capitalization from 3 to 5 million shares and the advent of financing and management control by Anacon Lead Mines Limited.Exploration and development to Jan. I, 1956, has included 42,331 feet of surface diamond drilling; 31,363 feet of underground drilling; a 3-compartment shaft to 1,245 feet, with 8 levels at 150-foot intervals; and I 1,054 feet of drifts, crosscuts, and raises. Ore reserves to the 900-foot level, proven and partly developed, total 546,725 tons averaging 0·30 ounces gold and 0·93 per cent copper. A mill with capacity of 500 to 750 tons will be installed by January 1956.GeologyThe Chibougamau Explorers property lies along the belt of Keewatin volcanics striking through Bachelor Lake, Opawica Lake, Doda Lake, Coapatina, Norhart Lake, and Rohault Lake, where it is in close proximity to the paragneisses of the Grenville series. The boundary of the paragneisses, a gradational contact, lies within a mile of the Chibougamau Explorers shaft collar."

"So many talks, so little time.One of the toughest challenges associated with attending the SME Annual Conference and Expo is deciding how to allocate one’s resources. After accounting for keynote and plenary sessions, committee meetings, networking events, luncheons and exhibits, attending even one of the 109 technical sessions and more than 600 technical paper presentations can be a labor of love. Many, however, managed to make it to many of the sessions, including the mineral and metallurgical processing technical session on solvent extraction, ion exchange and electrowinning.At one point, that room was seated to near capacity, with a considerable number of the audience members standing by the walls at the back. Brittany Valera of Freeport-McMoRan Inc. was one who came early and enjoyed the session in its entirety. "Everything was pretty exciting," she said. "I really liked the modular plants. I think the future of mining, just like what we talked about in there, lies in thinking about things like remote locations, lifetimes of plants, anything that would be reusable and sustainable; and lower-cost and user-friendly would be really beneficial."Michael Moats, associate professor of metallurgical engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, started off the session by presenting on behalf of post-doctoral student Alex Luyima, who, like many before him, had been snapped up by industry and is now working for a secondary-metals refining company in Texas. Their team studied the nucleation and growth mechanism of copper on stainless steel from synthetic acidified copper sulfate in the absence and presence of chloride ions and three commercial organic additives: Hydrostar 4208, DXG-F7 and Cyquest N-900. Currenttime data were analyzed using known models, with reference to scanning electron microscope images. Good agreement was achieved between the models and SEM micrographs of deposits at a commercially relevant current density of 30 mA/ cm2. The addition of 20 mg/L chloride was found to increase the size and reduce the number of nuclei. The addition of 2.5 mg/L of each additive did not change the mechanism, but all three reduced the size and increased the number of nuclei, leading to more uniform coverage of the substrate with smoother deposits produced in twohour electrowinning experiments. N-900 had the best deposition coverage while DXG-7 was the easiest to dissolve."

The samples of the washings are characterized of the ore for physical, chemical and metalurgical properties for representivity. the optimum values are determined for the recuperation of gold of the washings of the gold ore from the zone El Callao, Venezuela by acidic solutions of thiourea of the following parameters: Ph , contact time, composition of the liquid mixture, ratio of solid to liquid, grade of liberation, in an apparatus designed for contacting solid powder of the mineral with liquid solution of thiourea mantained in suspension by bubles of compressed air. The experimental results showed that the velocity of lixivation in primier time of (20) minutes is rapid and practically 2/3 part of the reaction is completed. Engineering and maintenance personnel often face a long and potentially expensive trial-and-error period in order to find the best process equipment to handle lime. Limestone is mined from a quarry in the form of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). AST fall over half a million tons of ore and rock were broken in one blast at the open pit of the Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting Company's operation, at Flin Flon, Manitoba. The following particulars of the blast, and details of the preparatory work, indicate how an operation of this scope is carried out. The data given, in essentially the present form, were first published by The Canadian Mining Journal. The area blasted was 150 ft. wide and about 700 ft. long. A total of 123 tons of 50 per cent forcite gelatin, in 5 by 16-in. cartridges, was used for the charge. Drilling for the blast was started on May 29, and was completed late in August, requiring 1297 machine shifts for drilling only. Total footage drilled for the shot was over 5 miles of 6-in. hole. The main blast consisted of 232 holes spaced on 17.5-ft.

IN 1877, Professor Thomson delivered at the Franklin Institute, [Philadelphia, five lectures on electricity. The object of the lectures and the demonstrations, which were numerous and many of them original even to the employment of special apparatus constructed by the lecturer, was to show clearly that electricity, of whatever name, was the same., differing only in tension (as it was termed) and in the current flowing, or quantity (the old term), in steadiness or in wave-like character. In those days, the textbooks divided the subject into statical and dynamic electricity, with sub-divisions such as frictional electricity, voltaic electricity, magneto electricity, electromagnetism, thermo electricity, and animal electricity. The well-known Ruhmkorff coil,' or spark coil as it is now called (as when used for the ignition of automobiles), was employed to step, up a battery current to a high-tension discharge which would charge condensers, such as Leyden jars.

SINCE the Saar started. the real progress in scrap-metal recover is in the change of point of view regarding secondary metals. The tendency had been to regard scrap as the normal outgrowth of obsolescence, fluctuating somewhat from periods of depression to periods of prosperity. but nevertheless an unwieldy economic factor more to be contended with than embraced. Now, metals above the ground are being looked upon as semi-permanent reserves or stock piles in various stages of repeated use or revolving life cycles. The change in point of view is due to the forced realization that domestic supplies of new metals are limited and many foreign sources are at least temporarily closed. The stock piles must be cultivated. The reserves must be made more nearly permanent. Steps are being taken : (1) develop methods for recovery of scrap metals heretofore not recovered, and (2) restrict strategic metals to uses ensuring a large percentage of re-use, which in turn means substitute materials in the dissipative uses.

IN the last two years the E.C.P.D. committees having to do with the inspection of engineering schools for possible accrediting have been concerned with the engineering content of some of the mineral industries courses. Originally the discussion arose with regard to engineering geology, or geological engineering, afterward broadening to metallurgical engineering, ceramic engineering, agricultural engineering, and other branches not pertinent to this discussion. Some members of visiting committees took the attitude that they probably would have to accredit these types of training as included in the engineering group if they met the average standard set by the mining schools, though they questioned -whether they were really engineering.

A NOTABLE feature of the practice of the American mining engineer is the fact that 'his field has been world wide, and the results of his work may be found in all countries. For this reason, the mining engineer is particularly interested in any legislation tending to restrict his freedom in this respect. In their zeal to improve the status of the professional engineer, those responsible for the enactment of the registration laws now in effect in various of the United States may have introduced a practice that will result very much to the detriment of the American mining engineer. He is preeminently interested in the maintenance of the professional "open door," and fame may be the reward of him who calls the first "International Conference for the Limitation of Restrictive Legislation." There is no reason why these United States should be the only country to regulate the practice of professional engineering and, in fact, the movement is spreading beyond its borders. Already, it is necessary for the mining engineer to be thoroughly conversant with the various state laws in order to insure his right to pursue his calling. It may soon be necessary for him to make sure of his status in foreign countries before undertaking work in them.

A interest to geologists and to mining and petroleum engineers is a laboratory method for determining the dip and strike of sub- surface structures, as well as the direction of fault planes traversing them. The information is derived by making use of the magnetic properties of borehole cores which must show visible representations of bedding or fault planes. Complete knowledge of these factors aids greatly in the successful exploitation of both ore and petroleum deposits.

RECENT experiments indicate that the usual type of concentrating-table is not only poorly adapted to produce the desired results, but also is based upon an incorrect principle, namely, the use of riffles to perform the work of stratifying the various minerals. We have heard a good deal about riffles for concentrating-tables; exhaustive experiments have been made to discover the proper form of riffle, or to prove the superiority this or that form; disputes and patent-litigation have arisen over the matter of riffles, and thus many have been led to believe that the riffle is the saving-device upon which the process of concentration depends. In the present paper it is proposed to show that the riffle is greatly overrated as to the part it performs in the concentration of minerals, and that, in the near future, it may possibly be eliminated entirely from that process. The experiments in question have shown that the troublesome riffle can be considered of secondary importance at the most, and should be so classed in the construction of a concentrating-table built upon the right lines. The action of any form of riffle on a concentrating-table is such as to upset and retard the process of settling and stratifying the various minerals on the table-deck. From the deck of a riffled table no concentrates can be delivered until the deck is "bedded," that is, until a sufficient amount of metallic values have been fed to the table to spread over a large portion of the deck, forming a substratum of the heavier minerals. This substratum must be maintained by the feed within quite narrow limits, and directly proportional to the rate of discharge from the table, in order that the bed shall not be lost. "In order to achieve tubular pile driving with low noise and low vibration, the Press-in Piling Method has been adopted on many projects. The method utilizes reaction force derived primarily from previously driven piles to push in the next pile into ground. With attachments, the Press-in piling equipment can deal with hard soil as well as difficult site conditions. At West Toronto Diamond Rail Grade Separation Project in Toronto, Canada, the Press-in piling equipment drove more than 500 of 914 mm (36 inches) diameter tube piles in length of 12 to 25 meters (39 to 82 feet) to construct earth-retaining walls for railway grade separation. Myoshoji River Restoration Project in Tokyo, Japan drove some 600 of 1,000mm (39.4 inches) diameter tube pipe sections in length of 11 to 22 meters (36 to 72 feet) by the rotary Press-in piling equipment to increase the flood drainage capacity of an existing river in highly populated area of the city. Both projects exemplify the advantages of the method in urban settings.1. BACKGROUNDThe Press-in Piling Method was invented some forty years ago in Japan, where a very large number of construction projects were causing widespread construction pollution, especially by pile driving work in densely populated areas. The method has been providing solutions for piling projects which could not have been built otherwise due to the noise and vibration impact to the surrounding communities. The method can be used with various types of piles including sheet piles, tubular piles, concrete sheet piles and so on. With high pressure water jet and continuous flight auger attachments, the Press-in piling equipment can deal with dense sand, stiff clay, gravels, boulders and even soft rock without employing a different set of equipment."
