"Smelting of scrap copper and residual anodes and cathodes carried out in a reverberatory type furnace. In this, deoxidation process is carried out by wood, which acts as a resource of reduction gases such carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane. Use of wood causes the formation of soot pollutants and efficiency of oxygen removal from copper is low leading to added costs in removing contaminants. This expensive problem was solved by using of reformed natural gas as a source of reduction gases (CO+ H2).IntroductionThree reverberatory furnaces were used for smelting of scrap copper and residual anodes and cathodes. Each furnace had a 7tpd capacity and was operated at 1183 °C.In this furnace, Step1-compressed air supplied by tubes from the side of the furnace to remove sulfur from copper matte by oxidation .The copper is also oxidized to copper oxide .[1]Step 2- copper from matte is deoxidized by a reductant. Typically deoxidation process is carried out using wood as a resource of carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane which are the reduction gases. Use of wood causes the following:1- Forms soot pollutants2- Oxygen removal efficiency from copper is low; more contamination in copper matte increased energy in deoxidation3-the process is highly expensive.In the recent trends, this problem has been solved by using reformed natural gas as a source of reduction gases (CO+ H) .This results in 1-Reduced pollution during smelting.2- High efficiency in the removal of oxygen from copper to produce oxygen free copper. The surface of copper produced from this method is smooth which helps in forming and machining.3- Low cost and natural gas is more readily available in Egypt than wood."

"Coal washing commands the thoughtful attention of a steadily incre in number of people. Clean coal is not merely a luxury but is rapidly becoming a necessity in some industrial operations.Coal seams in the Northeast are rarely free from ""bone"" and shale or clay partings which vary from a fraction of an inch to several feet in thickness. Nearly all of the coal measures are folded and faulted, the coal seams dip at various angles, and in some cases are badly broken. In mining these seams fragments of the roof and floor, as well as partings of impur-ities within the seams, unavoidably become mixed with the coal, so that the raw coal as it comes to the surface often contains as much as 50 per cent, by weight of waste.At the Bureau of Mines experiment station at Seattle, the washing of this coal in order to improve it for commercial use has been studied. Since the process of coal-washing depends upon differences in specific gravity between the clean coal and, its associated impurities, the first problem undertaken was that of determining the specific gravity of the clean coal and of each parting of impurity contained in a large number of representative seams.It was found that the freshly-mined coal is practically saturated with water, this being observed in determining the effect of moisture content upon the specific gravity of the coal particles, selected from samples of coal varying from low-grade subbituminous up to semianthracite, all of which are found in the State of Washington. The specific gravity values determined for the cleanest particles varied from 1.28 to 1.35; in general, the higher the rank of the coal the hither the specific gravity."

On grinding in pure water, zirconium, tantalum, iron, and stainless-steel powders were extensively comminuted and simultaneously oxidized with hydrogen release, whereas nickel, copper, and silver powders did not react with water and their particle sizes increased. On grinding nickel, copper, and silver in water pressurized with oxygen, nickel and copper became extensively comminuted and were oxidized, whereas silver did not react with oxygen and its particle size increased. From these results and other considerations , it is hypothesized that for extensive comminution of ductile metals and alloys to occur on grinding they must react with the grinding media. UlTRAFINE metal and alloy powders are finding an ever-growing number of applications in metallurgy and in other fields.' Of particular interest are ultrafine metal and alloy powders suitable for dispersion strengthening.2'9 Various research programs on dispersion strengthening are being carried out and in some of these programs the ball-milling method is being used to produce dispersion-strengthened materials. This method usually involves the simultaneous grinding of metal or alloy and a dispersoid followed by consolidation of the resulting powder mixture. To obtain the ultrafine powders required for dispersion strengthening,' grinding is carried out in many liquids, including aqueous and nonaqueous media, with or without grinding aids.4'5 Nonaqueous liquids usually contain water as an impurity and some grinding aids may contain water of hydration.5 The water present may affect the grinding process. The writer has shown5 that. on ball milling chromium in water, the chromium is oxidized and hydrogen is released. It was surmised that the same reaction may occur on ball milling other metals and alloys in waterbearing liquids. Therefore, the investigation of ball milling in water was extended to metals and alloys other than chromium. In the course of the investigation, however, it became apparent that the data-to-gether with the results from a few additional experi-ments—could be used to postulate a comminution mechanism for ductile metals and alloys. A well-known comminution theory is that of smekal.7 According to this theory, comminution is possible because of the weakening effects of surface cracks and other imperfections in materials. This theory imposes a lower limit of about 1 µm for the ground particles. The beneficial effects of liquids and additives on the rate of grinding are well known.8 Mechanisms by which liquids and additives may aid in grinding were reviewed by Rose and Sullivan.' One aspect of these effects is based on Rehbinder's theory of crack propagation in materials under stress.9 According to Reh-binder's theory, liquids or additives may promote the spread of cracks in stressed materials by lowering the surface tension at the crack tip. Rose and Sullivan surmise that the same mechanism may be operative during grinding, thereby facilitating comminution of the particles. In addition, Rose and Sullivan reviewed how additives may act as dispersants as a result of their being adsorbed on the surface of the particles being ground. This concept has been suggested by Quatinetz, Schafer, and smea15 to explain from their experiments the major role of additives that enabled them to grind metal down to 0.1 µm. Discussions of other comminution theories and additional sources of material on the subject will be found in Ref. 10. None of these previous suggestions and theories, however, can account for all phenomena encountered during ball milling of metals to submicron size in this and in a previous investigation by the author.6 The objectives of this investigation were to determine the behavior of metal powders during ball milling either in pure water or in oxygenated water and to gain an insight into the grinding mechanism. Zirconium, tantalum, iron, nickel, copper, and silver powders were ball-milled in pure water. These metals were selected because their oxides cover a wide range of free energies of formation. For comparison purposes, an alloy-type 430 stainless steel-was also ball-milled in pure water. The pressure of the hydrogen released during ball milling was monitored in order to determine the oxygen that combined with the metal or alloy. In order to obtain more information on the nature of the grinding process, nickel, copper, and silver powders were also ball-milled in oxygenated water (water pressurized with oxygen). The oxygen that reacted with the powders was determined from the pressure decrease in the mills. The powders resulting from ball milling in pure water and in oxygenated water were subjected to surface area, optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses. With these data, the oxygen calculated to be combined with the metals during ball milling, and comparison of the free energies of formation of the oxides of the milled powders with that of water, a comminution mechanism was postulated. MATERIALS, EQUIPMENT, AND PROCEDURES The materials used in this investigation were powdered metals, deaerated distilled water, high-purity helium, and commercial grade (99.5 pct purity) oxygen. The powdered metals used were zirconium, tantalum, iron, nickel, copper, and silver. A 16 pct Cr, ferritic stainless steel, type 430, was also used. The purities (or nominal compositions) and the surface areas of these metals and the alloy are given in Table I.

J. T. Pullon, Rowangarth, Roundhay, Leeds, England :— In discussing Mr. Lee's paper, I wish to call attention to the fact that Mr. B. II. Thwaite (who was heard here yesterday on the subject of the application of blast-furnace gas for the production of power, of which he was undoubtedly the pioneer) read, at the Engineering Congress in Glasgow in 1901, a paper on the profitable utilization of power from blast-furnace gases,' in which he suggested the diversion and cleaning of the whole of the waste gases coming from the blast-furnace and their utilization for power-production, so as to obtain, with proper manipulation, from 4 to 6 times the efficiency of present methods. He suggested also the heating of the stoves with producer-gas of a higher and therefore more suitable calorific value, so as to maintain them in a constant state of maximum efficiency, free from dust, and to avoid the irregular working of the furnace, besides obtaining a maximum supply of air-blast, of 15 or even 20 lb. pressure, by means of internal-conibustion blast-engines driven by the cleaned waste furnace-gases, with a surplus of gas left for other uses. Since that time, in view of the necessity of having a stand-by plant, immediately available, in case of strikes or other reasons causing the banking or blowing-out of the blast-furnace, he has developed, as an addition to his other types of producer, a high blast-pressure gas-generator, producing a gas identical with, or somewhat superior to, blast-furnace gas; and in which all the ash of the fuel is turned into fluid slag, which is available for, the production of slagwool. The gas is a little richer in carbon monoxide than average blast-furnace waste gas, and has only from 1 to 3 per cent. of hydrogen. The pllnse diagvam for the NaF-AlF3 system was used to calcutate an ionic model for the NaF-AlF3 system. Assuming an ideal solution,a series of simultaneous equations expressing equilibria be-tween solid and liquid phases at the euleclic, perilec-tic, and melting points were solved for the activities of the ionic species, the dissociation constants, and the entropies and heats of fusion. The calculations suggest the existence of A13F1415 ions in addition to the F-1+AlF6-3 , and AlF4-4 ions previously proposed by others. The calculaled valnes give better agreement with vapor pressures than the previous model without Al3Fl14-5. Additional possible vefinements of the model are proposed. CRYOSCOPIC1 investigations and density data2 for the NaF-A1F3 system have previously been used to study the dissociation mechanism of Na3A1F6 and to derive equilibrium constants for its dissociation to NaF and NaAlF,. Depending primarily on the heat of fusion assumed for cryolite, the dissociation constants ranged between 0.02 and 0.18 from cryoscopic studies, and from 0.09 at 1273°K to 0.16 at 1363°K from density data. In most cases the values were unable to reproduce satisfactorily the experimental liquidus lines very far on the A1F3 side of the Na3A1Fe composition. This suggested the existence of at least one other ionized compound in the melt besides NaA1F4 in the Na3A1F6-A1F3 side of the system. This is assumed to be liquid Na&13F14 (chiolite), which is already established as a stable solid in phase studies of this system. MODEL FOR THE MELT The melt is assumed to be an ideal solution with ion activities equal to anion fractions. The only cation in the model is sodium so that Temkin and simple anionic activities are identical. Although the compounds are completely ionized to Na' and the respective anion in the melt, molecular rather than ionic notation is used throughout this work. The Na3A1Fe is assumed to dissociate to NaA1F4 and NaF as in the former model, and Na&13F14 to dissociate to Na3A1Fe and NaA1F4. Other valid dissociation equilibria can be written involving these four compounds, but all of these can be obtained by combinations of the two described dissociation reactions and, thus, are automatically considered in these calculations. The model allows for no free AlF3 so that compositions for NAIF3 > 0.5 (mole fraction A1F3 on the NaF-A1F3 basis) cannot be treated. The question of the existence of free AlF3 in the melt will be discussed again later. The constants in the model were evaluated from points along the entire known liquidus line of the NaF-A1F3 system. Previous work employed only the liquidus line or densi- ties near the Na3A1F, composition. The liquidus line compositions used in the solution of the model are from unpublished work by Mr. P. A. Foster, Jr., for compositions between the Na3A1F6 melting point and the Na&13F14-A1F3 eutectic, and from the published works of Grjotheim,1 Phillips,3 and Foster4 for the remainder of the system. The relationships used in solving for the desired dissociation constants and heats and entropies of fusion are listed in Table I, and the points along the liquidus line at which each apply are indicated to the right of the relationships. The mole fractions of each of the separate species in the melt are symbolized by N. Relationships [I] and [2] are the respective dissocia-ation constants, Kl and K2, of Na3AIF6 and Na5A13F14 for this model. For simplicity, these constants will be assumed to be independent of temperature. Relationship [3] follows from the assumption of the ideal solution. The expression relating the values of N to the experimental values of NAIf3, is given in Relationship (41. Relationships [5], [6], and [7] each state the equilibrium between a compound in the melt and its pure solid phase for the portion of the liquidus lines where it precipitates. The heats of melting, AH,, and entropies of melting, AS,, used in [5], [6], and [7] are assumed to be independent of temperature. The compositions and temperatures of all five invariant points (two melting points, two eutectics, and one peritectic) along the liquidus lines from NAIF3 = 0 to NAIF3 = 0.5 were employed in the solution. The eutectic and peritectic compositions were particularly useful because each of these is involved in one more equation than other points along the liquidus lines and thus reduces the number of points required to solve for the constants. Also, their use assures that the inflection points in the derived liquidus line will correspond exactly with those on the experimental liquidus line. The total number of equations is 5k1 — 1, where n is the number of experimental composition points used. The number of unknowns is 4n + 5 (4n- 3 values of N, 3 values each of AH, and AS,, and 2 values of K). Thus, six points must be used in the solution to obtain an equal number of equations and unknowns. The one additional required experimental composition was taken on the liquidus line between the Na3A1Fe melting point and the Na3A1F6-Na5A13F14 peritectic. Previous work indicated this was a difficult portion of the curve to fit. The temperature used for the point was 1161°K, the same as for the NaF-Na3A1Fe eutectic. This choice of temperature gave two points with identical NNa3AIF6 values which simplifies the algebraic solution. The second point at this temperature is denoted 1161°'K. PROCEDURE FOR SOLUTION OF EQUATIONS Values were assumed for NNa,AIF and NNaF at the NaF-Na3A1F6 eutectic at 1161°k. By an iterative procedure, the corresponding values for NNa5A13F14 and NNaAlF4 at 1161°K were determined from 131 and 141. A value was assumed for NNaAlF4 at 1161°'K and

THE cyanide plant of the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company, Limited, at Wells, B.C:, in the Barkerville section of the Cariboo mining division, was erected during the latter part of 1932 and placed in operation in January, 1933. The initial capacity of the plant was about 50 tons daily. This was increased to 100 tons at the end of 1934 and stepped-up to 150 tons in September, 1935. It is expected that further plant extensions, for milling a total of 200 tons daily, will be required during the early part of 1936. Recent additions to the mill have been so planned as to permit ready expansion to 275 tons daily when underground development warrants the milling of this tonnage. It is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly the steps taken to bring the plant to its present capacity and to comment on possibilities for further plant expansion. The gold in Cariboo Gold Quartz ore occurs as free gold in the quartz and on pyrite surfaces. Some of it is very finely divided, specks l/10,000 inch having been observed microscopically, according to Dr. G. Hanson. In addition to pyrite, which comprises probably 15 to 20 per cent of the mill feed, galena and sphalerite are present, with small amounts of arseno-pyrite and chalcopyrite. Sulphobismuthites-chiviatite, galenobismutite, cosalite, etc.-occur more or less frequently in certain sections of the mine. Following tests on Cariboo ore by the Mines Branch, Department of Mines, at Ottawa, treatment of the ore by straigh t cyanidation was recommended and a 50-ton plant employing continuous counter-current decantation was erected. This plant was built as a pilot mill, the intention being to erect a larger mill after metallurgical treatment had proved successful over an extended period. This original installation, however, has been enlarged and retained as an operating unit, additional equipment being added to it as capacity increases have been required.

Mining is currently undergoing a progressive expansion into novel environments (such as the deep ocean), commodities (such as tantalum, rare earths, and other ‘green economy minerals’), and new methods (such as the autonomous underwater cutting machines required to operate in the deep ocean environment, or the use of expanding grouts to deliver a blast-free mining method). The advent of novel mining, environments and commodities heralds an era that will undoubtedly start with much discomfort on the part of regulators and stakeholders, due to a feeling of overwhelming uncertainty. These proposed mining scenarios have few precedents, few examples of successful implementation, short baseline monitoring periods, and few examples of legacy sites that may assist with understanding long term risk and exposure. The evolution of the environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) process in many regulatory environments recognises stakeholder engagement in a formal and facilitated manner. This is a positive step, and allows stakeholders to be much more meaningfully involved in the permitting process than they historically were. However, with this advance comes the challenge of identifying and communicating with stakeholders; sharing information in a meaningful way, fostering relationships with what can be an extremely large group, and delivering on commitments that inspire confidence to permit operations that have never been permitted before. In order to meet this challenge, it is suggested that changes to collection of data, communication of data, the nature of commitments, and the reporting of performance need to be made in order to effectively communicate management of new technologies, and the impacts that mining may have in new environments (such as the deep ocean). The communication challenge is necessarily greater when describing technology that has never been used, or environments that have never previously been accessed by humans on an industrial scale. "A new near net shape casting process, OHNO Continuous Casting (OCC), has been recently developed. In this process, molten metal is fed into a heated mold maintained at a temperature above the solidification temperature of the metal being cast. Solidification begins from the central core of the casting rather than the wall of the mold. With the heated mold, the formation of crystals on the mold wall is prevented and solidification occurs out of contact with the mold surface. This produces near net shaped products with smooth, mirror-like surfaces and unidirectional grain structures free from cavities, porosity and segregation. Any crystals formed at the beginning of solidification decrease in number as solidification progresses and eventually a single crystal product is obtained. This process is applicable to any metal alloys, converting them into new materials with superior properties and quality.IntroductionAs a result of growing technical demands for more advanced and diversified materials, the OHNO Continuous Casting (OCC) technology has found many new applications in industry. Considerable interest in the process has been shown in Japan and other countries because of its distinct ability to:produce a single crystal, (1)produce a remarkably clean cast surface without a witness mark,provide extremely good ductility,and reduce casting defects and segregation.This paper provides an overview of the principle of the OCC process and describes the remarkable characteristics of the material produced by this method."

The management of waste materials in the aluminum industry is as important as in other basic industries. Due to the high value of the-by products of the melting process and their toxic properties we took the challenge to develop a process technology to reduce the environmental impact and to help industry to get a better yield of their by products/raw materials. In melting operations metal losses due to oxidation are nearly unavoidable, the amount of such losses, however, can be controlled. Aluminum dross actually is a by product and any shop would like to get rid of it in the most economic way. This by product still contains up to 70% valuable metal! In the present work we describe possibilities to separate metal and residues for further processing. Recycling of metal concentrates, selling of dross and dumping of the residues have been the typical solutions up to now. But there are technologies available which are designed to reduce the waste to a minimum or even avoid it altogether. Such alternatives are processing of the dross into materials which can be reused in other industrial processes in order to avoid any dumping. This can be done by separating the metal and the residues by centrifuging and further use of the residues in the chemical or refractory industry. ECOCENT means economical and ecological recovery of aluminum by centrifuging of hot dross. This process, developed by FOCON Austria, is based on the idea of treating the hot dross as quick as possible in a single operation to avoid exothermic losses, intermediate storage and unnecessary handling as well as to save energy. In the ECOCENT process the hot dross is fed without any fluxing salt additions into a converter where the relevant parameters for separation, like temperature and viscosity, will be adjusted. Further big lumps of dross are ground into smaller pieces in order to improve the later separation of the metal. After homogenizing and adjusting the temperature, the hot dross is poured as quickly as possible into a centrifuge. In the ladle or alternatively the mould of the centrifuge the centrifugal forces are used for the separation of aluminum from aluminum oxide, the major constituents of dross. The separated pure metal can either be discharged liquid or as solidified aluminum ring. The design of the device for the production of liquid or solid metal is almost identical. As soon as the centrifuging is finished the liquid aluminum can be poured back into the furnace or can be used for ingot pouring. After the pouring of the metal the "dry" residues are removed just by turning the ladle. Alternatively the aluminum solidifies in the mould and is discharged as a compact ring. The separation of the residues from the aluminum ring is automatic. Due to the batchwise operation the composition of the metal is the same as in the skimmed furnace of origin. The complete treatment cycle needs about 40 minutes. The recovery rate of aluminum is better than 90% of pure metal. This technology is highly flexible by its nature and can easily accomodate various operational requirements. The consumption of energy is more than 50% lower compared to conventional dross processing as the ECOCENT process is using the inherent energy of the hot dross. These extremely good results are not dependent on the aluminum content of the dross even from very dry dross most of the metal can be recovered. The main advantages compared to conventional dross processing are the high recovery rate, the known analysis of the metal and the immediate reuse of the recovered aluminum. The high recovery rate and the pure metal result in a short amortization period. The compact ECOCENT unit needs a minimum of space since extensive handling can be avoided. The electronically controlled process needs no cooling water and is simple, safe and environmentally sound. The residues are free of fluxing salts, their content of metallic aluminum is low and the environmental problems are thus greatly reduced.

"The purpose of this paper is to describe the relationship of the goldbearing ore to structure at the Pickle Crow mfoe. Information beyond this scope may be found in the reports and papers of Hurst( l), Bothwell(2), Thomson(3) , and Monette( 4).The property lies on Crow river, in Patricia district, 80 miles northeast of Allanwater, and about 125 miles northeast of Sioux Lookout on the Canadian National railway. From April of 1935, when the mill began operation, to the end of 1944, a total of 564,890 oz. gold and 49,275 oz. silver were recovered from 958,416 tons of ore.Mining on the property is at present carried on in two separate orebodies, the Howell and the No. 2 vein. Stoping has been carried on from every level on the Howell vein to a depth ot 2,450 feet below the surface and from several levels on the No. 2 vein through a mile long cross-cut on the 750-foot level to the Howell vein workings. A steadily increasing volume of ore is being obtained from the No. 2 vein.Each of the two orebodies consists of vein quartz with small amounts of other gangue minerals either in a single vein or a stockwork of veins. Both lie within sheared walls and carry gold in the free state. Fig. 1 shows the position of the veins with respect to the surrounding rocks. It will be noted that the delineation of the beds of iron formation shows that the lava flows and minor, interbedded sediments that make up most of the country rocks are areally folded and contorted.STRUCTURENearly all gold found to date in sufficient quantity and concentration to make ore in the Pickle Crow area is confined to these major quartz veins . Both strike a little north of east and dip north, and in both cases the attitude of the enclosing rocks is somewhat more north of east in strike and more steeply north in dip than that of the veins. As a result of this disposition both veins migrate across their enclosing rocks at a moderate angle in both dip and strike. (In this connection it should be noted that No. 2 vein dips at a considerably flatter angle than its host rock, but has a very pronounced rake to the northeast, effecting the same result as in the Howell vein.)"

OUTSTANDING among the year's events in copper has been the reimposition of an import duty of 4r. per pound in this country which became effective June 21. In consequence of this action by Congress, the Ottawa Empire conference recommended a duty of 2d. per pound equivalent at normal rate of exchange to our 4c. duty, on all copper originating outside of the Empire. Lip to the middle of this year only Russia and Japan had a closed market; the import duty on copper in Russia is 30 per cent ad valoremm and in Japan about 2c. Russia's consumption has always been in excess of production and she has imported from 2(1,000 to 40,000 ton, of copper per annum. Japan, with a production of 6,000 to 7,000 tons per month, has absorbed, in normal times, its production, but during recent: sears has exported varyiug quantities in 1929. 2,200 ton-: in 1930, 2,700 tons, and in 1931. 3,600 ton-. Aside from the-e two countries, the international market has heretofore been free. It and when the British Empire duty become, effective the world's markets will be divided into four unit: 1. Russia and Japan, 2. United States. 3. British Empire. 4. Rest of the world. The world's production at present is rennin it the rate of 930.000 tons per annum. This year's production will be over 1,000,000 tons because the several curtailment did not become effective until the second quarter. consumption will be slightly in excess. Ground water, one of Florida's most valuable resources, is also one of its most abundant. The State is fortunate to have several prolific ground- water reservoirs that yield tremendous quantities of water to wells and to some of the world's largest springs. These ground-water reservoirs, or aquifers are of two types artesian and nonarteaian. Ad artesian aquifer is one that contains water under sufficient pressure to rise above the top of the oontaining formation. A nonartesian aquifer is one that contains water which is not confined, and the upper water surface (water table) is free to rise and fall. The principal source of ground water in Florida is the artesian Floridan aquifer which supplies most of the water users in the State. Nonartesian sources include the Biscayne aquifer of southeastern Florida, the sand-and-gravel aquifer of extreme western Florida, and a shallow aquifer which lies at depths of less than 100 feet over much of the State. The accompanying map shows the approximate areas where these aquifers are the main source of supply; however, the boundaries do not represent the areal extents of the aquifers. For example, the Floridan aquifer extends beyond the southern boundary shown on the map, but it is not of great economic significance there because the water is highly mineralized. Aquifers other than the four described occur in the State, but they are, for the most part, of minor significance. One of these is an artesian aquifer which is formed by permeable zones that occur locally within the confining beds above the Floridan aquifer.

"The energy is introduced directly into the volume of the honeycomb ceramic regenerator due to the complex interaction of microwaves with minerals in microwave gas heating system. A three-dimensional numerical model is developed to simulate the electromagnetic field by solving Maxwell's equations using finite-difference time-domain method. Computational result is presented for the microwave power absorption of the regenerator. Effects of the dielectric constant and the effective loss factor on the microwave power absorption in the regenerator are studied as well. Numerical results show that the heating pattern strongly depends on the dielectric property of the regenerator. I AM APPRECIATIVE of the honor you have done me in electing me to membership in your Society. I value the contacts with men of imagination and ideals which this implies. I am grateful for the recognition of such small contributions as I may have made, or helped to make, to the vast fund of scientific and engineering knowledge. We like to think, as we grow older, that our lives have not been purely parasitical, and that through our efforts some forward step, however small, has been taken toward improving conditions under which we live and do our work. In these days of industrial depression, we hear much criticism of our "machine age." Modern engineering, mass production, the complexity of our lives, all come in for some share of blame. The farmer is said to have been spoiled by the tractor and the gang plow, the factory worker has become a slave of the assembly conveyor, the scientific worker is no longer free but has sacrificed much of his individuality to the research organization of which he is a part. We wonder whether our work as engineers has been worth while and whether our striving after more efficient ways of doing things has been a curse to mankind rather than the boon we thought we were conferring.

A new process for the treatment of silver crusts from desilverization of lead has been developed by Societe de Penarroya. The zinc contained in the crusts is recuperated by vacuum distillation at low temperature. The use of special retort crucibles is avoided. AT Noyelles-Godault the Parkes process (zinc addition to a silver-bearing lead melt) is used to desilverize lead bullion from the blast furnace. The crust which rises to the surface of the bath is removed and pressed by a well-known process in a press of the Howard type. The pressed crust, called zinc crust or silver crust, contains 10 pct Ag, 30 pct Zn, and 60 pct Pb. It is melted under a salt bed in a small, narrow, and deep kettle heated only in its upper part. A liquid concentrated alloy is obtained which is called T.A.C. in France (triple alliage concentr6) analyzing approximately 25 pct Ag, 65 pct Zn, 8 to 10 pct Pb, and 1 to 1.5 pct Cu. This T.A.C. is a real metallic alloy, completely deoxidized, and can be stored indefinitely. The process used at Noyelles-Godault consists in distilling this alloy in a tight furnace, under low vacuum and at low temperature, so that only the zinc distills and is condensed into liquid form. The residual silver-bearing lead is almost entirely free from zinc and oxidized dross. The vacuum dezincing equipment, see Figs. 1 and 2, consists of: 1) A furnace, constituted of a casing of steel plate lined with refractory bricks, heated internally by means of graphite resistors. The temperature of the furnace is measured by a thermocouple device and controlled by an automatic temperature regulator which acts upon the flow of the current passing through the resistors. Two doors, numbered 1 and 2 in Fig. 2, are provided for, one for charging the T.A.C., the other for tapping the high silver-bearing lead. 2) A condenser, and an ordinary room lined with good heat conductor refractory material. This condenser is provided with a graphite resistor which serves to bring to temperature when starting the furnace. A thermocouple records the temperature of the zinc melt and controls the temperature in the furnace, that is, the flow of current through the resistors, by means of the above mentioned regulator, so that the distillation rate in the furnace does not exceed that of the condensation. The condenser is connected to the vacuum pump by a filter. The whole equipment should, of course, be fluid-tight. The operation is carried out under a vacuum of about 10 mm Hg.

1. INTRODUCTION In this section, precious metals are defined as gold, silver, and the platinum group metals comprised of platinum, palladium, iridium, osmium, and rhodium. If the first three years of the 1970's are the criteria, gold, silver, and platinum seem destined for a bright future. Gold advanced in price from the historic figure of $35 established in 1934 to over $100 per oz (1973). For the five years 1966 to 1970, silver consumption exceeded production by about 50%. The silver price appears to be definitely on the uptrend, and a price of over $3 per oz seems probable. On this basis (at 1964 costs) the United States has an estimated 5 billion oz of unmined silver. The fresh burst of interest in platinum with a surge of renewed price strength (end of 1972) is due to the activity in the automobile emission control area, where platinum re¬mains the front runner in the catalyst area. Some international financial experts believe that governments will not rush into reform of the monetary system, and "Special Drawing Rights" (SDR's) will gain increased standing as international mone¬tary reserve assets. Gold will continue to be reviewed as the ultimate store of value and will remain the global monetary base. Devaluation of the U.S. dollar caused by imbalance of import payments over ex¬ports is the basic reason that the price of gold will likely remain above the $90 per oz figure for the balance of the 1970's. Gold and silver usually occur intimately associated, and recovery methods are often closely related; however, they were assigned sepa¬rate chapters, because the major production of each metal is from ore deposits classified as either gold or silver. For example, the gold ore occurrences in South Africa, the world's leading gold producer, have a ratio of gold to silver of approximately 10 to 1. The ores at the Homestake Mine, Lead, S.D., the largest U.S. gold producer, are predominantly gold with a ratio to silver of approximately 5 to 1. Silver in each example is a byproduct. By this same classification, the largest U.S. silver producers are the silver ores of the Sunshine, Galena, and Lucky Friday mines in the Coeur d'Alene district, Idaho. However, the largest single-mine silver producer in the Free World is the Kidd Creek Mine at Timmins, Ont., where the occurrence is with sulfides of copper, lead, and zinc. Thus, the major gold production of the world is derived from those ores classified as gold ores; whereas, less than one-half of the silver production is from silver ores, and only a small percentage of the silver production is from gold ores. 2. GOLD Gold, the noblest of metals, has been mined for thousands of years. Its chemical symbol, Au, is derived from the Latin "aurum," meaning "shining dawn." A precious substance because it is one of the rarest metals, it has unique physical properties: it does not tarnish; it exceeds all other metals or alloys in malleability and ductility; it is a good conductor of electricity and is one of the most nonreactive metals. Its greatest strength is its indestructibility. It is the only metal mined at depths exceeding 10,000 ft. Since the early 1800s, its chief role has been as a medium of exchange, providing the basis for interna¬tional trade. In the past 15 years, however, gold has emerged as a useful industrial commodity. This role has been fortified by the estab¬lishment of a two-tier pricing system which maintains monetary gold prices at an established U.S. Government price, with industrial gold being priced higher by the free-market system. Occurrences and Production Native gold furnishes most of the world's production, since gold forms stable natural compounds with few other elements. Neverthe¬less, the metal is widespread with traces of it found in seawater and in the ashes of plants and animal material. Next to the native metal, the tellurides have been the most important gold-bearing minerals; these include calaverite, krennerite, slyvanite, hessite, and nagyagite. Native gold is invariably alloyed with more or less silver, but it is exceptional to find any other metal in the alloy. It is found in veins associated with quartz, calcite, alunite, other gangue minerals, and with various sulfides. Sulfide minerals in order of frequent associa¬tion are: pyrite, galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, arsenopyrite, tetrahe¬drite, and pyrrhotite. Small amounts of metallic gold are commonly disseminated through such sulfides. When considerable amounts of silver occur in gold, the mineral electrum is formed. In a few deposits, gold and mercury form natural amalgam. Native mercury is formed by weathering from cinnabar and other mercury minerals. Among the minerals sometimes mistaken for gold, pyrite, marcasite, and especially chalcopyrite may be men¬tioned. The flakes of biotite and other micas, especially when partially oxidized, also may imitate it closely. World gold reserves never have been estimated carefully. Esti¬mates indicate that present world reserves approximate I billion oz, of which about 60% occurs in South Africa and 20% in the USSR. World gold output is dominated by South Africa which produces two-thirds of the world's production from reserves that are adequate to maintain existing output levels. South African gold output comes from approximately 50 large underground operations that mine and mill 70 to 80 million tons of ore annually to recover 30 to 32 million oz of gold. The USSR is the second largest gold producer, followed by Canada and the United States (see Table 1). Gold production in the United States and Canada rose to high levels in the 1930's, following the increase in price from $20.67 to $35 per oz and with an abundance of good labor due to depression in other industries. Production of over 10 million oz in 1940 was behind only that of South Africa. World War II caused a precipitous drop in gold output due to the imposition of War Production Board Limitation Order L-208 issued in October 1942, which caused over 9,000 gold mines in the United States to shut down, most of which never reopened. The U.S. Treasury, which suspended purchases of newly mined gold in 1968, had been the sole buyer of U.S. produced gold since 1934. This created the two-tier pricing system, and in March 1972 the President signed into law a bill authorizing a $3 increase in the official price of gold to $38 per oz. In February 1973 the President ordered a second devaluation of the dollar, amounting to about 10% which raised the official price to $42.22 per oz. WITH Thomas G. Fear, chairman of the Coal Di- vision, presiding, the coal miners opened their program Monday morning with a general session at which three papers were presented. The first, "The Classification of Coal for Stationary Steam Generation," was presented by the author, Thomas W. Harris, Jr. In discussion, H. T. Coates inquired if it would not be possible to pick out a geographical coal section, certain seams or a group of mines, which would rank high in a desired feature or features, perhaps giving different -- - local sections or different mines something to designate a rating ("good," "fair," and "poor"). This might be done relative to anti-clinkering, free-burning, ,anti-slagging, smokelessness, friability and grindability. These might be listed or arranged on a map or diagram so that the prospective customer could find a coal that rated particularly high in desired characteristics. C. A. Reed pointed out, in part, that coal producers and sellers have found a bad but necessarily present condition in the country, especially with the smaller user of coal. This is entirely due to the fact that the employer expects his purchasing representative to be a genius and have expert knowledge of everything he buys, coal included, whereas in the larger plants he has and uses expert knowledge from the active organization when necessary. J. B. Morrow said that size rating was important in classifying coal and he emphasized that it was impossible to come to a definite basis on analysis alone.

For gold recovery, a Chinese refractory, high-sulfur gold concentrate was subjected to biooxidation with high pulp density in a single stirred-tank reactor. The flotation concentrate contained 36.9 percent sulfur (S) and 33.9 percent iron (Fe). Different experimental regimes for biooxidation were applied. With a mixed culture and by controlling the amount of addition of the gold ores and the pH of the biooxidation system, maximum iron oxidation of 82.6 percent and sulfur oxidation of 79.3 percent were achieved. The experimental results indicate that the pH control was beneficial to the biooxidation of this concentrate. Approximately 28.4 percent of elemental sulfur (S8) was found in the oxidizing slags. Two dissolution mechanisms of elemental sulfur are proposed: (1) FeS2 → S80 → S2O32− → SO42− and (2) FeS2 → S80 → SO42−. The high pH had a positive effect on the reduction of the S8. The results of thermodynamic analysis indicate that as an oxidant the dissolved oxygen can effectively reduce the Gibbs free energy of the pyrite oxidation process and, compared with the reaction of ferric iron as the single oxidant, the oxidation of pyrite is easier. The efficiency of the gold recovery was related to the iron oxidation as well as the sulfur oxidation. Gold and silver recoveries of 92.4 percent and 66.4 percent, respectively, were achieved.

This paper will be presented in two parts. The first part will present the latest advancements in pile installation techniques using state-of-the-art press-in piling technology by Giken. By pressing in sheet piles and large modulus contiguous steel tube pile walls – as opposed to the more traditional installation methods using percussive hammers or vibrators – retaining structures can be constructed effectively noise and vibration free. For over water and coastal projects with limited access, this provides significant environmental benefits in the form of minimising the construction foot print and the impact to surrounding communities and the marine natural habitat. Typical noise and vibration data will also be presented. The second part of this paper will review the current manufacturing techniques for sheet piles and introduce innovative new materials used in the current piling market for embedded sheet pile walls. Materials include long service life non – ferrous materials such as new age plastics and fibre reinforced polymer piles. Their excellent long term performance and durability make them an effective solution in the marine environment. For steel piles, a number of steel grades with reduced corrosion characteristics will also be discussed including a newly developed steel to combat corrossion in the low water zone, an area often exhibiting the highest moments in a retaining wall. A number of project case studies will also be presented to reinforce their relevance in today’s changing construction landscape.
