The Bureau of Mines is sponsoring a variety of long-term, high-risk research to advance state-of-the-art technology in U.S. underground coal mining. This report reviews the status of many Bureau projects that support fundamental underground coal mining operations; the project areas include cutting coal from the solid (extraction), hauling coal from the face (transport), and activities that sustain daily operations (logistics). Innovative equipment and technology have been developed, with these major objectives: to significantly improve coal mine productivity, to further advance coal recovery and personal safety within the mining industry, and to reduce the time needed to develop longwall panels. The majority of the prototype equipment covered in this report either has undergone or will undergo comprehensive evaluation at Bureau surface test facilities so that performance and reliability can be improved before the equipment is tested and evaluated in a working section underground.

A program of investigation of strategic and critical minerals began in 1940 to examine and develop tungsten occurrences in the western United States and Alaska. During the years in which the nation was at war, this work was given special impetus to stimulate domestic production. This report is a compilation of results of the tungsten investigations in Alaska supplemented by certain data made available by the Territorial Department of Mines and is designed to include in its scope descriptions of all known tungsten occurrences in the Territory. Two areas in Alaska warranted special investigation - one at Gilmore Dome, 16 miles northeast of Fairbanks, and the other in the Hyder District, at the head of Portland Canal. Three tungsten properties - the Stepovich, Colbert, and Yellow Pup - are at Gilmore Dome. The Stepovich property, referred to sometimes as the Cleary Hill tungsten deposit, was worked by the Cleary Hill Mines Co. from April 1942 until May 1944 and was first examined by Robert S. Sanford and Norman Ebbley, Jr., engineers of the Bureau of Mines, in September 1942. The Cleary Hill Mines Co. by that time had explored an 800-foot strike length of the ore zone with 10 bulldozer trenches and was sinking an inclined shaft on ore in the central portion of the explored zone. In January 1943, the senior author, in company with Ebbley and Harry C. Doheny, supervising engineer of R.F.C., examined the property. Preliminary work by the Bureau of Mines began in May 1945, but actual exploration did not commence until late in June and continued until the end of October 1943. The deposit was examined by John B. Mortie, Jr., and William C. Overstreet, of the Federal Geological Survey, in 1942, and this study was continued in 1943 by Frank Byors, who also assisted the Bureau’s engineers on geologic problems. A magnetometer survey of this area was undertaken in 1942 by Henry Joosting and Eskil Anderson, engineers of the Territorial Department of Mines, and was completed with Bureau of Mines assistance in 1943. During 1943 the Bureau completed exploratory projects on the Cleary Hill mine and adjacent Colbert prospect. The field work on the Colbert property was begun early in July 1945 and continued intermittently until the end of October 1943, when it was recessed because of subzero weather. During September 1944, the Bureau of Mines established (by means of a few surface trenches) continuity between the Colbert mineralized zone, high on the dome, and the Yellow Pup vein, the lowest known tungsten mineralization in the area. It is generally recognized that any extensive program to develop the area as a whole logically would be carried out from the lower horizon.

Discussion of the paper of Mr. Granger, presented at the New Haven meeting, February, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 25, January, 1909, pp. 1 to 37. LEWIS M. HAUPT, Philadelphia, Pa. (communication to the 'Secretary*) :-This subject is of great interest to me, and I am noting progress and conditions as a test of my own judgment in advocating what I believed to be the nearer, cheaper and better route at Nicaraugua. I have as yet learned nothing to change my views, or modify the convictions which led me to retire from the Commission; but that is not the issue to-day. Our government is committed to the Panama route, and is bound to " make good." There are many points presented by Mr. Granger which seem to me worthy of very serious consideration. But when all is said there remains the risk of seismic convulsions, to which either form of canal is subject; and I fail to see that the risk would be reduced by making the cut deeper, with greater surcharge of lateral pressure upon the side walls. A severe earthquake in the rainy season would doubtless close either type of canal. One of the arguments in favor of the Panama route most insisted on, was that Nature had provided good natural harbors at its termini. Recalling this, it has interested me to note that the cost of creating the necessary harbors is estimated at $27,000,000. Mr. Granger refers to this, and quotes the Board's report to the effect that, on the Atlantic side, it will require 5 miles of jetties to " make an excellent harbor out of a wretched one." The vulnerable part of Mr. Granger's paper seems to me to lie in the admission that the plant required is still in the embryonic stage, and that at least one machine should be built and tested " to demonstrate that the theoretical strains and forces work out in practice exactly as expected." The Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) provides a cost effective solution for the rapid construction of retaining and cut-off walls using new equipment developed from diaphragm wall cutter technology. CSM consists of cutting and mixing drums mounted on compact hydraulic motors. Soletanche Bachy CSM has been designed to leave the space above the tool free, thereby mixing the soil efficiently during all the phases of the wall construction, with high penetration rates. The precise positioning and verticality of the wall is achieved using a kelly bar and full monitoring. Soletanche Bachy CSM is a versatile equipment which can be mounted on various carriers: pile rigs, hydraulic crane, carrier equipped with telescopic mast. The major phases of Soletanche Bachy CSM development are presented, including the results of an extensive trial carried out in Le Havre (France). The soil consists of hydraulic fill with soft soil lenses overlying sandy deposits. 20m deep panels were constructed to support a rectangular shaft. During the construction, and after its completion, the shaft was subjected to an extensive series of tests followed by a partial excavation. The paper discusses also the future development of the technique and its potential applications.

The Minataur? Process (Mintek Alternative Technology for Au Refining) is a novel route for the production of high-purity gold using solvent extraction. Following the successful demonstration of the process on a pilot-plant scale, a full-scale 24 t/a production plant has been commissioned at Harmony Gold Mine in Virginia, Free State. The commercial implementation of this process represents not only a significant advance in gold-refining technology, but may be instrumental in initiating important changes in the legislation regulating the marketing of gold in South Africa. Gold of either 99.99% or 99.999% purity can be produced from intermediate process products having a wide range of gold contents. The process comprises oxidative leaching of the solid feed, followed by selective solvent extraction of the gold from the leach liquor to reject impurities, and precipitation of high-purity gold powder. This paper outlines the process, presents selected results of two pilot-plant trials in which 5 kg/d of high-purity gold was produced from silver-refining anode slime and gold-electrowinning cathode sludge, and provides some details of the cost benefits.

Mould powders play an important role in the stability of the continuous casting process. The main functions of mould powders are to provide sufficient lubrication and to control the horizontal heat transfer. Because process control of thin slab casting is more stringent, it is generally assumed that mould powder properties become more critical as well. In 2000, the Direct Sheet Plant at Corus IJmuiden (DSP) was commissioned, incorporating a thin slab caster designed for casting speeds up to 6 m/min. During commissioning, several operational problems with mould powders were encountered i.e. insufficient liquid pool depth and the formation of rims/lumps. To investigate the operational mould powder problems, some of the mould powders were characterized using physical and mineralogical methods. The results were linked to operational experiences. It was concluded that for thin slab casting, a stable slag formation is obtained with a proper choice of free carbon and an even distribution of the carbon particles within the granules. The physical properties of mould powders are not as critical as expected when the additional mineralogical requirements are taken into account. About 90 per cent of the pre-mining BIF-hosted iron ore resource of the Hamersley Province of Western Australia is of the Phanerozoic supergene martite-goethite type. The remaining ten per cent formed as supergene deposits at ~2000 ¦ 200 Ma, and were later modified by burial to form the Proterozoic martite-microplaty hematite ores. The supergene-metamorphic segment of this general unified model has been challenged by three recently published hypogene-based genetic models for the hematite ores, all requiring meteoric oxidation to produce the ore. The most recent and detailed, by Taylor et al (2001), is based on data from the small Southern Batter and North deposits of the Mount Tom Price mine. The authors proposed that during Stage 1 æoverpressured bicarbonate-saturated basin brines from the dolomite aquifer of the Wittenoom FormationÆ at 150 - 250¦C, dissolved free silica from BIF to produce a stratigraphically thinned, magnetite-carbonate-silicate-apatite rock. In Stage 2, meteoric oxidation of siderite to secondary microplaty hematite + ankerite, and magnetite to martite, at unspecified elevated temperatures and pressures, was followed by carbonate leaching (Stage 3). Finally, during Stage 4, weathering with removal of apatite, produced the typical low-phosphorus, porous martite-microplaty hematite ores of the Tom Price-Whaleback type. However, evidence of both microplaty hematite and martite reduced to magnetite, and of infill silica, apatite, and ferroan chlorite, with late-stage pyrite, in the pore space of martite-microplaty hematite ore, shows that the hydrothermal activity at Mount Tom Price is a post-ore event. Neither pyrite nor ferroan chlorite could resist the oxidation required to form hematite ore. Recrystallisation of microplaty hematite in these infilled zones to a typically coarser form than present in most of the normal ores, is a further supporting factor. A more credible, post-ore alternative to the hypogene genetic model is suggested here. Re-exposure to leaching by ground water of the metamorphosed ore deposits in the Phanerozoic resulted in the partial removal of remnant goethite. Localised modifications in the porous BIF/ore contact zones were driven by exothermic oxygen/pyrite/carbon reactions in the footwall Mt McRae Shale. Cool descending oxygenated meteoric water in the permeable ore horizons, acted as one limb of a thermal convective cell. In the other limb, heated reducing solutions rose through the permeable contact zones, to produce the observed localised modifications of BIF and ore. Expelled silica from the carbonatised BIF invaded adjacent porous ore to form erratic silicified ore zones, and to produce the local quartz vein systems found in the associated overlying BIF.

Introduction The Hollinger cyanidation mill commenced operating in June, 1912, and 49,779,978 tons of solids had been discarded by the end of 1950. The present tailing disposal plant has been in operation since 1924 and holds 39,762,250 tons. The tailing disposal plant is on the property of Kayorum Gold Mines, Limited, about a mile and a quarter south of the mill. The area available for tailing covers 640 acres and is roughly l ¼ miles long by ¾ mile wide. Tailing was first deposited on the McKay veteran claims, l mile long by 1/2 mile wide, which were later included in the Kayorum property. This site sloped from northeast to southwest, the slope amounting to 106 feet between the northeast corner and the low land to the southwest. The low land was wet and a considerable area was covered with muskeg up to 17 feet deep. It was drained by a brook running across the property in a southwesterly direction. Later, when more ground was needed, the low-lying mining claims adjacent to the south and west boundaries were acquired to allow for the extension of the plant. This entailed some extra difficulties and expense that would not have been encountered had the whole of the present site been acquired with the original purchase. At the present time, the top of the tailing deposit stands at two elevations, but eventually the tailing deposited on the extension to the original plant will be raised to the same height as the older deposit. Previous to 1924, all of the tailing was deposited on Low land and in lakes near the mil1. Between 1924 and 1926 an increasing tonnage was sent to the McKay claims until, in 1926, all of it was being sent there. In 1936, the area of the deposit was extended and shortly afterwards all of the tailing was deposited on the new site.

Production of traprock occupies an important place in industry. In 1960 the output in the form of crushed stone reached nearly 58 million tons valued at $87 million. Traprocks are also shaped into blocks of dimension stone for monuments, building construction and decoration, and specialized products such as surface plates.

THE present era of exploitation of the Little Long Lac and Sturgeon River areas commenced in 1925, when Beardmore Gold Mines started development of what is now the property of Northern Empire Mines. A shaft was sunk in 1927-28 and a very limited amount of underground work was carried out, following which the property was shut down. It remained idle until 1932, when Empire Star Mines, a Delaware Company, optioned the property. This Company formed the Northern Empire Mines Company, Limited, to operate the mine, and immediately instigated an aggressive programme of surface and underground development. By the summer of 1933, sufficient ore was indicated to justify the installation of a small mill. The decision was also reached to bring in electric power. A power-line was built from Hydro, the Ontario Power Commission's development on the Nipigon river, to the mine, a distance of approximately 50 miles. This work was entirely financed by Northern Empire Mines. Mill construction was commenced in October, 1933, and completed by March, 1934, thus making this mine the first producer in this district.

Construction materials indeed face a dilemma...as does the building industry as a whole. A stop & go economy; a severe drop; in housing starts; lingering indecision over just what corrective steps are to be taken or to their degree of commitment; no less basic disagreement in regard to which of the, Nation's problems is really the most pressing -- inflation or recession? Optimism has become a rare quality these days. At moat the cautious view is that this new year will see a long, hard struggle back, with hopes that 1976 at least can truly mark a dual anniversary celebration for the United States and its economic health. Yet the paradox is that once recovery does return, those very construction minerals and materials --which in recent years have experienced the ups and downs of overcapacity, shortage, and now declining demand again-- will once more face the spectre of mass inability to service revived and growing needs for its product. Mounting costs, present marginal expansion investment, and substantial lead times required for new facilities to come into production, could well form a bottleneck to economic upswing. The result again can be another cycle of shortage-induced inflation, and with it continued gyrations within the demand supply relationships of the country's building industries.

"The International Cyanide Management Code (the Code) is a voluntary industry program for gold miners and associated cyanide transporters and cyanide producers. By becoming a signatory, a company commits to follow the CodeÆs principles and implement its standards of practice.Signatories are required to undergo an initial certification audit within three years and a recertification audit every subsequent three years. Recertification audits evaluate compliance over the preceding three-year period. This approach presents a number of challenges. Golder Associates has undertaken in excess of 75 initial certification audits and 25 recertification audits; more than any other audit firm. This paper outlines some of the challenges identified and lessons learnt from the recertification audit process. Central to the process is the challenge for organisations to maintain commitment to compliance over the full three-year period and effectively address deficiencies or non-conformances that may have occurred during that period in a prompt manner.The International Cyanide Management Institute (ICMI) provides guidance in evaluating deficiencies or non-conformances, which requires consideration of the æcauseÆ, ædurationÆ and æongoing compliance effortsÆ and an assessment of the concept of ægood faithÆ in response actions. The paper traces the pattern of spontaneous combustion in the workings of what was originally Hemsworth Colliery, but since July 1967 is now part of South Kirby Colliery. Examination is made of the Barnsley Seam sections and the part played by the top section of the seam as it comes in close proximity to the main seam. In this area of the colliery nine mechanised faces were set away between the years 1953 and 1968, every one "fired" at the pillar edge and six "fired" at the face line when production had ceased. The paper deals with the different preventative measures used, from sandbag walls, cement injections, spraying with polyurethane, until finally using Mandoseal as a sealant. Since the latter method was first used, the last three faces worked in this particular area were all salvaged completely, without any sign of a heating developing.

This paper presents a theoretical investigation on the ionic equilibrium of Fe(III)?Ni(II)?H2SO4?H2O system. A non-ideal speciation model is developed to calculate the concentration distribution of iron and nickel species in a mixed ferric and nickel sulphate aqueous solution over the pH range from 0 to 4 and temperature from 25 to 100°C. A series of speciation diagrams for iron and nickel species is plotted with the effects of ionic strength and temperature on the equilibrium constants being taken into account. The ionic strength-dependent equilibrium constant is treated through a semi-empirical Vasil'eV equation, which is based on an extended Debye?Hückel theory. A Helgeson model is applied to extrapolate the equilibrium constant to elevated temperature. The ionic equilibrium reactions are described by a group of numerical equations containing the temperature and ionic strength-dependent equilibrium constants, which are solved by the Newton-Raphson method. The speciation model is also applied to estimate the hydrogen ion activities and corresponding pH values. The calculated pH values are in agreement with the experimentally measured pH, and are compared to literature data and pH values produced by the Visual MINTEQ® program (a computer code for the calculation of chemical equilibrium in natural aqueous system). This investigation provides a deep insight into the ionic equilibrium behavior of a mixed metal sulphate aqueous system which commonly occurs in hydrometallurgical processing. "GeneralWabush Mines is an unincorporated joint venture of seven steel companies and Pickands Mather & Co. The mining and concentrating facilities are located in southwestern Labrador and the pelletizing and shiploading facilities are at Pointe Noire, 200 miles south, near the town of Sept-lies.The operation is based on a 5 ½ sq. mi. specular hematite deposit with a reserve of 375 million tons of concentrate. Annual production capacity is rated at 6 million tons of pellets per year. The final upgrading process utilizes high-tension separation of silica following wet autogenous grinding, spiral gravity separation and fluo-solids drying. The concentrate is railed in closed cars to Pointe Noire. The concentrate is reground dry and pelletized on Dravo Lurgi travelling grate machines to produce an oxide pellet with 65.5% Fe, 3.0% Si02, 1.95% Mn and 93.5% Tumble Index.HistoryPlant operations commenced in 1965 with a concentrator capacity of 5.3 million tons per year and a pelletizing capacity of 4.8 million tons per year. The original facilities for classifying the crude ore into fine and coarse fractions for storage purposes before reblending as autogenous mill feed were found to be unnecessary and were by-passed after plant startup. Capacity of the operation was increased to 6.0 million tons of pellets per year in 1968. This increased capacity required the installation of an additional160 cleaner spirals in the ore dressing plant, a new 5000 hp ball mill, three balling circuits and increased cooling air capacity in the pellet plant.In 1970, the regrind circuit in the pellet plant was converted to dry grinding and a significant reduction in grinding media consumption and maintenance costs was realized. A ninth grinding mill of 5000 hp capacity was installed to compensate for the reduced capacity in going from wet to dry grinding."

The solubility of rare earth (RE) salts in aqueous solutions depends on many factors including the type of cations and anions in solution, their concentrations, temperature and the type of solid precipitated. Experiments were conducted using anhydrous La2(SO4)3 and Ce2(SO4)3⋅8H2O as solids and lanthanum(III) perchlorate prepared by dissolving La2O3 in HClO4 solutions as RE-sources. Solutions of H2SO4, H3PO4 and their mixtures in the presence or absence of Na+, Ca2+, Fe(III) or Al(III) as perchlorates served as test solutions. Saturated solutions and precipitated solids were assayed and characterized using standard techniques to show that the La(III) and Ce(III) ions precipitate as hydrated sulphates, phosphates or double salts with sodium, depending upon the solution composition. The change in solubility of RE-salts with solution composition and temperature is the result of the composite effect of changes in solubility products (pKSP) of salts, pKa of acids and other equilibrium constants for ion-association.

This report describes investigations by the Bureau of Mines designed to establish the noise level and spectrum of various types of pneumatic rock drills and to furnish information that would be useful in conducting sound measurements in mining environments and in reducing the noise generated in pneumatic drilling. These investigations show that (1) the noise generated by the drills in the frequencies below 100 cps is caused by the impact of the piston and drill steel, in the frequency range between 100 and 2,000 cps by the exhausting of air from the ports, and in the frequencies above 2,000 cps by the resonant frequencies of steel drill parts and of drill steel; (2) satisfactory instruments and instrumentation systems are available for field and laboratory measurements; (3) reliable sound measurements can be made in mining environments; and (4) devices can be developed that will abate the noise.

The gravity recoverable gold (GRG) parameter reflects liberated gold or gold-dominated composite particles that can be recovered by gravity separation. Recoveries depend upon mineralogy, in situ particle size and the comminution and extraction method used. Any ore bearing >15 per cent of gold greater than 50 ¦m in size is likely to have a GRG component. The principal characterisation methodology applied is the three-stage GRG (3GRG) test, based on a 40 kg to 100 kg sample. An alternative is the single-stage GRG test (SGRG), which is generally based on a 20 kg sample. Experience has shown that GRG values can vary throughout an orebody, particularly within different grade and/or mineralogical domains. Test programs must consider sample frequency and mass. This study demonstrates the variability of GRG results based on different sample masses. Consecutive underground faces on a coarse-gold dominated quartz vein were sampled taking five different masses from each. Each sample was processed using a SGRG approach. Subsequently, each development round was batched through a small gravity production plant. The results show that the small samples understate the plant GRG and show inter-sample variability. Large samples show less variability and a SGRG closer to the plant GRG. A high SGRG broadly correlates to higher gold grades, more coarse gold and larger gold particles. These results are intuitively correct, but indicate the likely challenges of sampling for gold recovery in heterogeneous systems.CITATION:Dominy, S C, 2013. General Description Due to the extreme cold weather experienced in Flin Flon during the winter months, thought and precaution were necessary in the design of the plant buildings. The machine shop, carpenter shop, drill shop, and coal plant buildings are similar in the building materials used in their construction. They are sided with two-inch shiplap, insulated with celotex and asbestos paper, and covered with corrugated iron on all side-walls. Roofing consists of 2 by 4 lumber on edge, laminated, and further covered by celotex and three-ply roofing. These buildings are heated by means of unit heaters. The heaters are primarily steam-heated radiators, through which the air of the buildings is circulated by electrically-driven fans. Our machine shop is located to the east of, but central to, the main operating buildings of the mine and plant, and is so connected by a net work of tracks as to be able to serve all portions of the entire plant conveniently. The building is divided into two bays, the main bay 53 ft. by 340 ft., and the east bay 24 ft. by 340 ft. The shop office and drafting room, a two-story annex 24 ft. by 30 ft., is located on the west side of the shop. The arrangement within the shop is such as to house conveniently the several departments, namely, heavy machine tool section, repair floor section, boiler shop heavy tool and floor section, blacksmith heavy tool and forge section, tool room, electric welding rooms, stock room, tin and copper shop, and electrical parts and armature winding and repair shop (see Figure 1). All the heavy tools, the repair floor section, and railway tracks are so located in the large open bay as to be fully serviced by an electrically operated 15-ton bridge crane, with a span of 50 feet and a travel the full length of the shop. A standard-gauge railway track, branched off the main line, penetrates the full depth of the building. This track lies along the extreme east side of the main bay, allowing easy entrance and movement of rolling stock and heavy machinery, loaded on standard flat-cars, to the repair floors in the main bay. Eight jib cranes, affixed to building columns, further facilitate the heavy repair work throughout the various shop divisions. Our light and heavy machine tools are standard equipment, not unlike tools used in mine, mill, and railway shops.
