Field and laboratory data combined with computational modelling have been used to predict the pit water quality for the Highway Reward mine. Open pit mining of the Highway Reward copper-gold deposit has produced a final mining void with a diameter of 600 m and a depth of 280 m. This void will be left to fill with ground and surface water once pumping of pit water ceases. Several leaching tables were constructed to simulate weathering reactions and surface water run-off in the major pit wall units during a 200-day leaching experiment. Introduction This paper, it is hoped, will serve as an introduction to further work upon the origin of the soils and to a more complete interpretation of the geology of Saskatchewan from a study of the soils of the Province. The great difficulty that is encountered in mapping the structure of the prairie regions of the west must be evident to all who have made the attempt. The rarity of good exposures, due to the extensive coverings of glacial drift, is the greatest obstacle, making it difficult to determine the exact stratigraphical position of such exposures as may be found. In many cases palæontological evidence is lacking, or, if available, our present knowledge of the stratigraphy is insufficient to justify division of the formations into horizons; and until many of these formations have been subjected to petrographic investigation, little can be done in using lithological differences as an aid to the correlation of the usually sparse outcrops met with in the Province. Topography may be of the utmost value as an indication of geological structure when considered in conjunction with other evidence. It does not necessarily follow that, because an area in Saskatchewan has resemblances in surface configuration to an area of oil-producing land in Texas, there is sufficient justification for sinking money in wells without further investigation. Such - investigation should include the study of available soil maps.

Although viscosity is known to be important in processing and handling finely ground urea, its effect has never been fully quantified. This report describes the methods used and the results obtained in the initial phases of a broad investigation of the influence of viscosity of water suspensions of minerals in flotation, thickening, filtering, and other mineral-dressing unit operations. Several types of vis-cosimeters were tested before reliable and reproducible results could be obtained on mineral suspensions. After the viscosimeter used in the research was calibrated and standardized, tests were made on six pure minerals to study the relationship of pulp density, particle size, crystallinity, and cleavage on viscosity. An orifice-type viscosimeter equipped with a mechanical stirrer gave as good results as other types and was more flexible, faster, and simpler to operate. The orifice-type viscosimeter, when calibrated and standardized with glycerin and water mixtures, proved satisfactory over a wide range of viscosities. The accuracy and reproducibility were reasonably constant between 1 centipoise and 200 centipoises, the anticipated range in common mineral-dressing unit operations.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) often contains small amounts of metal as a minor component but this metal may contribute to adverse health effects. Knowledge of the mechanism for particle formation as well as the size preference of the trace metals is critical to understanding the potential for health concerns. To achieve this, the size and the composition of each particle should be optimally measured at the same time. Single particle mass spectrometer (SPMS) would be the best tool for this objective. In this paper, we therefore will introduce new findings about the mechanism and distribution of the trace metals in DPM, derived from a study where an SPMS was used to analyze freshly emitted DPM. To determine the nahcolite and dawsonite content in oil shales, the Bureau of Mines compared X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermal methods, and a previously published method by Smith and Young based on the selective solubility of sodium compounds. The Smith and Young method and a new method based on the weight of carbon dioxide produced by thermal decomposition are recommended for determining nahcolite. X-ray diffraction and the Smith and Young method are recommended for determining dawsonite. X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and differential thermal analysis were useful for identifying other minerals in the samples.

BIOX® has been successfully demonstrated over the past 2 decades for the recovery of gold from refractory sulphide concentrates. To date 12 successful BIOX® plants have been installed in 8 countries spanning 4 continents with the 13th installation currently nearing completion in the Philippines. In 2010 BIOMIN introduced the ASTER™ process for improved water balances in commercial BIOX® applications by supporting tightening environmental legislation on water usage and availability in both arid and tropical regions. Previously, a common challenge for BIOX® plants was the inability to recycle thiocyanate containing water due to the low tolerance of the organisms. ASTER™, a biological thiocyanate and cyanide destruction process, renders a non-toxic solution for re-use in BIOX®. Two commercial ASTER™ plants are in operation with the 3rd ASTER™ plant under construction in the Philippines. A 3rd BIOMIN technology, specifically developed for double refractory ores is available for implementation. The HiTeCC process has shown considerable success on ores where competition from disseminated carbon has rendered ineffective gold recoveries. Through HiTeCC, gold is desorbed from the carbonaceous matter by manipulating the ionic strength and temperature of conventionally treated CIL product. One Australian commercial plant utilises HiTeCC while a 2nd installation is set for commissioning 4th Quarter 2014. BIOMIN’s premier solutions for refractory gold processing are described herein.

"The extractive metallurgy of gold ores is largely driven by their grade and mineralogy. The concentration of gold in the crust is extremely low and highly variable, resulting ore variability in many gold and copper-gold deposits. More importantly, gold in an ore may occur in two or three forms (i.e. microscopic gold, submicroscopic gold and surface gold), making gold ore processing extremely challenging. Geometallurgy is a technique to document variability within an orebody and quantify and evaluate the impact of many factors including geology and mineralogy on grinding, flotation, leaching and metal recovery processes. The objective of gold geometallurgy is to reduce and minimize the technical risk in project evaluation, plant design, mine planning and production forecasting through geometallurgical modelling, representative sampling and subsequent systematic mineralogical and metallurgical testwork. Gold deportment study is a powerful tool in characterization of various gold ores. Effective and quantitative gold deportment results are critical and useful for predicting gold recovery and building geometallurgical models of gold ores. This paper provides an overview of geometallurgy fundamentals and applications in gold processing, with a focus being on the ore characterization and gold deportment study.INTRODUCTION Geometallurgy is an inter-disciplinary approach which links the geological, geochemical and mineralogical characteristics to the metallurgical performance of an orebody. Combined with mine planning, it has been used in scoping, prefeasibility and feasibility studies, process design and optimization of gold, copper-gold, copper-moly, nickel and iron projects among others (Williams & Richardson, 2004; Dobby, Bennett, Bulled, & Kosick, 2004; Bulled, 2007; Bulled, Leriche, Blake, Thompson, & Wilkie, 2009; Kormos, Sliwinski, Oliveira, & Hill, 2013; Muinonen, Sciortino, Korczak, & St-Jean, 2013; Leichliter & Larson, 2013; Leichliter, Jahoda, & Montoya, 2013; Hatton & Hatfield, 2013; Baumgartner et al., 2011, 2013; Hoal, Woodhead, & Smith, 2013; Zhou, 2013). The goal of a gold or copper-gold geometallurgical program is to characterize and understand the metallurgical variability of an orebody, such as comminution, gravity, flotation and cyanidation parameters and metal recoveries, and to build a geomet model which can be used to assist in mine planning and to predict the plant performance. In any geometallurgical program, representative sampling is the key to ensure the results of a geometallurgical study will reflect future performance once the plant is commissioned. Geometallurgy compliments, but does not replace, the traditional mineralogical and metallurgical approach during the development and operation of a gold or copper-gold project. Geometallurgy is a methodology for testwork design and a framework for mine planning. The first part of this paper provides an overview of geometallurgy fundamentals and application in gold ore processing."

Separation of minerals by shape has received little attention, since minerals normally do not break into different shapes during crushing and grinding. However, comminution of consumer wastes generates opportunities for novel separations based on particle shape. For instance, ductile plastics are broken into longer curved shapes, whereas brittle plastics yield angular particles. Using spouting beds for particle separation in water requires controlling the spout's instability. The preferred geometry for such redesigned spouting beds is reported. Plastic cylinders, discs and spheres were separated as a function of rising water velocity and amount of particles in the system. By using 5 mm particles, differences in settling behavior could be video recorded.

The objective of this research by the Bureau of Mines was to determine the technical feasibility and associated pilot data for drying minus 1/4-in coal with microwave energy at a frequency of 2.45 GHz. The drying data were obtained experimentally on three coal types: bituminous, subbituminous, and lignite. The experiments were performed with a custom-designed conveyorized microwave oven having a continuous power capability of 12 kW. Drying efficiencies near the theoretical maximum of 1.54 kg of water per kilowatt hour of energy input were achieved for two coals and two sizes; overall drying efficiencies averaged 77 pct.

The natural hydrophobic response flotation method for beneficiation of printed circuit board comminution fines (PCB CF) still requires many studies to further basic understanding of the process and the flotation traits that the PCB CF presents. Varying particle size distribution (PSD) and water recovery under the scheme show that higher mass pull, obtained at the finer PSD, gave lower water recovery but higher value loss. The reverse also holds: the least mass pull at the coarsest PSD used, -106 + 75 µm, gave the highest water recovery per unit mass pull with the highest reverse recovery. This is unlike what obtains in primary resources processing, where higher water recovery is often with increased fines entrainment. The reverse recovery loss here is, therefore, more due to entrapment with the heavy mass pull characteristic of the method than to the entrainment of value with water. Other peculiarities of the system observed are discussed, with the goal of improving the performance of the process, and broadening the general knowledge of flotation systems.

The Bureau of Mines has developed an automated reflectance scanning microscope system, primarily for determination of volume proportions, size distribution, and mode of association of the physical (petrographic) components of coals. The process, which is potentially more rapid and objective and less tedious than a visual microscopic procedure, involves magnetic tape recording of several millions of reflectance readings on micro-meter sized areas of polished coal surface and computer analysis and interpretation of some characteristics of the coal components. The system was tested in a study of pyrite distribution in steam coals. The application was essentially successful, but defects in polished pyrite surface characteristics and problems in adequate sampling prevented completely satisfactory results. Pyrite con-tent and coal-pyrite particle association could be determined nearly as well as by visual microscopy, but size distribution data were less acceptable.

External-detonation-generated plasmas, highly ionized zones of reacting material ejected from the surface of detonating explosive charges, are shown to be the cause of channel desensitization, i.e., the self-quenching of a detonating explosive column loaded in a borehole with an air annulus between the explosive and the borehole wall. The effects of this phenomenon on several explosive compositions and types are demonstrated and discussed. The explosives tested include aluminum-sensitized and explosive-sensitized slurries, ANFO, liquid explosives and dynamites. Various techniques are described that can be used to reduce or eliminate the plasma effect.

"In the platinum group metals (PGM) industry, smelters are often perceived as ‘black boxes’ that have to process concentrates of variable mineralogy and originating from multiple mines operating along strike or downdip from each other in the same geographical region, as is the case in the Western Bushveld of South Africa. However, PGM smelter complexes are much more sensitive to concentrate blend variation than most metallurgists or geologists would anticipate.This paper will review the impact of concentrate blends deriving from a number of concentrators processing ores from the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC) on smelting and converting behaviour and the constraints they impose upon smelter operation. Significant variation in behaviour is not only noted between the main mineralisation types, namely the Merensky and Upper Group 2 (UG2) reefs, but also within a given reef type. Due to the way PGMs are mineralised and finely disseminated, concentrators have to grind concentrates ultra-fine to liberate the PGMs and provide a sufficiently high-grade concentrate for smelting.The chemistry and mineralogy of the concentrates vary with the type of mine (open pit versus underground), the reef type and varies along strike; this variation impacts numerous key smelter parameters such as the base metals content, the matte fall, the converter aisle capacity, sulfur dioxide gas production, furnace matte and slag temperatures, and the accumulation of high smelting chromite-spinel minerals that has led to significant smelter upset conditions such as catastrophic furnace hearth and sidewall failures.Due to the production intensity of smelting, ie its high rate of processing per unit volume, smelters have been found to be far more sensitive to rapid variation in concentrate properties, highlighting the need for adequate blend control.CITATION:Eksteen, J J, 2016. Local communities are undertaking an increased role in mine project decision making processes, associated with growing pressure and expectations from regulators, financiers and the general public. This is particularly evident in international projects within developing economies. Environmental and social issues are often complex. Solutions demand difficult choices and trade-offs between sustainable development dimensions: economic growth, social equity and environmental integrity. Proactive stakeholder engagement can play a critical role in assisting decision-makers in determining the operational reality of sustainable development by jointly exploring project trade-offs between proponents and affected stakeholders. Good stakeholder engagement has other potential benefits, ranging from reduced financial risk due to regulator delays, legal disputes or negative publicity to increasing market share through good public image. Approaches to consultation and disclosure have changed from short-term regulatory based focuses, to longer-term, strategic tools for relationship building, proactive risk management and new business identification. Approaches to consultation form a significant opportunity to contribute to overall social sustainability. This paper discusses, based on authorsÆ experience, the broader concept of stakeholder engagement and its contribution to social sustainability of the mining industry. The focus is on key considerations for an effective stakeholder engagement. Three case studies outline how broad based, proactive stakeholder engagement can contribute to improved operation and overall sustainability. The case studies include: a greenfields project in Ghana; a long-term mine in Australia; and an open-pit mine in Vietnam.

Introductory At the Annual Meeting of the Institute, held two years ago, I had the privilege of presenting a paper on Recent Mineral Discoveries in Western Quebec. In it were pointed out the areas favourable for prospecting in that section of Quebec adjoining the mining camps of northern Ontario; the discoveries that ?had been made were recorded; and some of the developments up to that date were reviewed. Since then, two full years have elapsed, during which a considerable amount of serious work has been performed with such results that western Quebec has today six properties about ready to mine commercial ores of gold, copper, and zinc. These results have been brought about after large sums of money had been invested to bring the district to a producing stage. A smelter has been built, and is already producing copper; two railways have extended their lines into Rouyn; and the Provincial Government has shown faith in the future of the district and has spent large sums of money in the building of highways and for other public works. The purpose of the present paper is to review the developments of the last two years, and the work that has been performed in various spheres of activity in that section on western Quebec covering the county of Abitibi and the northern part of the county of Temiscamingue.

"INTRODUCTION Information on the gaseous products from the detonation of explosives has been obtained in two ways. In the first, the atmosphere in mines is analyzed after blasting, and in the second, the gases found after detonating an explosive in a testing apparatus are analyzed. The Bureau of Mines, in a cooperative research 3/ that compared data obtained in the field with those obtained in the testing station, showed that the results were not in entire agreement. The production of carbon monoxide was found to be governed chiefly by the oxygen balance of the explosive, but the production of oxides of nitrogen did not change in so simple a manner. Because of the increasing interest in correlations between the composition of the explosive and the production of toxic gases, it seemed desirable to continue the investigation.PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATIONAs field tests are both time consuming and expensive and as field results are affected by factors that are not always under control of or clearly evaluated by the operator, the purpose of this investigation is to develop a testing-station procedure that will reproduce the gaseous products quantitatively under known conditions analogous to those that may be expected in the field. This paper describing the mining practice at the Harmony mine, Baker, daho, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. About 150 tons of copper ore containing 4 per cent copper, 0.001 ounce gold, and 0.1 ounce silver, is being produced daily from the Harmony mine by the shrinkage method of mining. The ore is taken by an aerial tramway 1/3 mile long to the mill, where it is concentrated. The concentrate is shipped 8 miles by truck to the railroad and thence by rail to Utah for smelting.

"Vertical material transport is one of the major challenges for the successful implementation of deep sea mining projects. The EU research project „Blue Mining” is focusing on sustainable solutions for deep sea mining operations, with one major goal being the advancement of Vertical Transport Systems (VTS). To investigate flow effects under realistic conditions, especially clogging effects, a 136 m high test facility for flow analysis in vertical transport has been constructed using available mining infrastructure. Tests are run in a closed circuit, using a system of downfall and riser pipelines connected to a compact sediment injection- and separation unit as well as the centrifugal pump. The riser is equipped with pressure sensors, as well as temperature sensors, flow meter, concentration meter and high speed camera to allow comprehensive analyses of the flow regime and behavior of transported material within the flow. Additional mobile measurement devices allow wear and tear analyses of pipe material. This paper focuses on the determining factors of the tests leading to the design as well as the installation and trial of the test facility itself and explains the used components and work principles. INTRODUCTION Since the 1970s several research projects had been conducted investigating in the possibility of deep sea mining. In recent times projects for deep sea mining operations have started again, considering the rising demand on natural resources, especially raw earth elements. Yet projects like the Nautilus project on the deposit Solwara 1 [1], or Japanese projects focusing on the region of Okinawa [2] and Chinese projects [3] planning on depths of “only” about 2,500 up to 3,000 m. Until now no economical deep sea mining project was realized, due to the enormous difficulties of deep sea environments. Vertical material transport is one of the major challenges for the successful implementation of deep sea mining projects, considering transportation heights up to 5 km. The EU research project „Blue Mining” is focusing on sustainable solutions for deep sea mining operations, with one major goal being the advancement of Vertical Transport Systems or VTS [4]. Critical parts of the system would be identified and investigated to deliver solutions and higher the technology readiness level to a level were planning of a pilot project can be considered. At first case examples for mining projects of seafloor massive sulfides (SMS, 1,600 m water depth) and manganese nodules (MnN, 5,000 m water depth) had been calculated on basis of economical frame conditions, such as planned production rates to be efficient. As depicted in Figure 1 two major possible systems had been used for comparison, airlift system and pump system, considering multiple pump stations or single pumps. Based on the results and comparisons for the calculated vertical transport systems critical components and flow effects had been identified."

The importance of the processing of secondary resources such as solid industrial wastes and liquid effuents as well as byroducts for the recovery of the associated metal values hardly needs any elaboration. Such processing contributes in no small measure.towards the augmentation of the availability and the supply position of resources. As an added benefit, it leads to a reduction in environmental pollution caused by the undesirable waste materials. As some typical examples of secondary resources in the Indian scenario, mention' can be made of spent catalysts, metal/alloy scrap, ash, consumed batteries, flue dust, slag, sludge and slime, pickling solutions, spent acids; plating rinse solutions, spent etchants, waste water from synthetic fibre manufacture and from tanneries etc. These wastes constitute a source of a variety of non ferrous metals. In the processing of secondary resources like these, the techniques of hydrometallurgy such as solvent extraction play a pivotal role. This paper outlines the efforts made to use solvent extraction to recover (1) base metals such as copper, zinc, nickel and cobalt from a number of secondary resources like cake, and sludge(2) refractory metals like molybdenum and vanadium from sulphidic, byproducts and spent catalyst and (3:) nuclear metal like uranium from phosphoric acid. In the case of base metals, process flowsheet involving the use of acidic extractants such as DEHPA and PC88A have been optimised. The problem of iron removal from the leach liquor, "which influences the metal recovery process significantly, has drawn a special emphasis. hi the case of refractory metals, basic extractants .like Alamine 336 has been pressed into service to produce kilogramme. quantities of pure salts of molybdenum and vanadium, Finally, the paper gives a brief account of plant experience in recovering uranium from phosphoric acid, using 'a solvent system comosed of DEHPA and TOPO.

The nickel-cobalt sulphides produced from limonitic laterite ores by Moa Nickel S.A. in Cuba are refined at the Corefco nickel-cobalt refinery in Canada. Significant economic implications are associated with the refining of precipitated sulphides containing elevated iron contents. The Moa Nickel S.A. operations encompass laterite mining, high pressure acid leaching (H PAL), and ultimately, precipitation of a mixed sulphide product. These processes are reviewed as they pertain to the control of iron and the formation of a mixed sulphide containing nominally 55% Ni, 5% Co and 1% Fe. The contributors to the iron content of the mixed sulphide product are reviewed; the major contributors are the HPAL operation and sulphide precipitation. The precipitation of iron during sulphide precipitation is influenced by the solution acidity, the iron and copper concentrations in the feed solution, and the presence of laterite leach solids. The significance of the copper concentration of the sulphide precipitation solutions is manifested by both physical and chemical modifications of the sulphide precipitates, presumably through the formation of fine copper sulfide seed particles.
