This preliminary bulletin was written as the first of a series of several on the significance of drafts in steam-boiler practice, the succeeding bulletins to be along the same lines but of a more advanced character. The conclusions arrived at are tentative, and are the result of a study of one of the many problems growing out of a general plan of the United States Government to increase the efficiency with which the coals of the country are being used. Greater efficiency requires better boiler and furnace design. The experimental study of drafts on which the conclusions presented in this bulletin are based formed part of the fuel-testing investigations that were carried on by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey and have been transferred to the Bureau of Mines. The experiments made seem to indicate that it is possible to double or treble the capacity of a plant without making any radical changes the furnaces and boilers. These increases require about double and treble the quantities of air to be put through the fuel beds and boilers. It also seems probable that rebafHing the boilers will often permit the capacity to be doubled or trebled, while still getting more steam than formerly per pound of coal for uses outside the boiler room. These experiments were undertaken with the object of clarifying ideas concerning the passage of air through fuel beds and boilers. Measured weights of air were passed through two beds of lead shot, series, one of which remained always the same and represented a boiler; the other being varied as to size of shot and depth of bed, and representing a fuel bed. Careful observations were made of the weight of air passing through the beds per minute. All data were plotted in many charts, so as to permit the study of them from several points of view. A number of laws were deduced bearing on the relative amounts of power required to force air through fuel beds of various thicknesses, composed of various sizes of coal, and through boilers of various lengths and areas of gas passages. An important part of the discussion relates to an increase in the capacity of boilers by increasing the amount of power applied to pressure and exhausting fans and thus forcing several times as much air through the fuel beds and boilers. may be possible, as a result of these investigations, to raise the rate of working the boiler heating surface to three or even four times its present value. Such an increase would undoubtedly mean new designs of grates, stokers, furnaces, and boilers, especially fitted for high rates of working. Fan equipments designed to supply three or four times as much air under several times the pressure would be provided with more efficient engines, thus giving an additional factor favoring high-capacity working. It must be borne in mind, as stated above, that the results are tentative. It will cost money to force gases at high speeds through fuel beds and boilers, and there will soon be pressing need of such quantitative data as will enable the largest possible part of the energy imparted by the fans to be advantageously utilized. "INTRODUCTION.Street manholes for underground power and signal circuits, and for sewers vary in size from small openings that a workman can enter, to large central vaults. As the gas hazards in manholes are similar to those in mines, the mine safety committee of the Bureau of Mines was asked whether the miners' flame safety lamp is a practicable device for indicating inflammable gases in manholes.The coal miner detects firedamp (methane or CH4) with his flame safety lamp by observing the luminous can or the increased length of flame that appears when 1.5 per cent or more of the combustible gas is present. The lamp flame also warns him of lack of oxygen by going out when the oxygen becomes less than 16 to L7 per cent. A tentative rule regarding the proposed use of safety lamps at manholes has been suggested previously as follows: ""Testing for gas: Do not enter manholes until you have .assured yourself that the manholes are free from dangerous gases, by testing with an approved safety lamp, by ventilation, or by other adequate methods."" The Bureau's committee recommended that miners' flame safety lamps are not suitable,testing in manholes because hydrogen gas may be formed therein. The flame safety lamps approved by the Bureau of Mines for use in aseous mines are safe in presence of methane and while not tested against the members of the paraffin hydrocarbon series (CnH2n+2) higher than methane they been have been used therein; the lamps should not be used in hydrogen or acetylene they can initiate explosions in presence of these gases."

"Glass manufacturing is a heat intensive process. There is a direct correlation between the batch distribution techniques and the furnace energy consumption, productivity, and quality of the glass manufactured. All four major segments (float, container, fibre, and specialty glasses) would benefit from using an optimised batch distribution technique where possible. Oscillating batch chargers (OBC) have been in use since the early 70s, despite their superior batch shape, coverage, and in turn positive effects on the energy consumption and productivity of the furnace they are almost exclusively used in container glass manufacturing. The OBC’s main difference compared with other charging methods is its ability to directly influence the batch initial velocity. This paper reports on results achieved in CFD models (GFM) used to study effect of the machine on the overall energy consumption in the doghouse and the melt space.IntroductionGlass manufacturing can be divided to four major segments float glass, container glass, fiberglass, and specialty glasses. The financial cost of manufacture, its impact on the environment, lack of standardisation and mounting pressure imposed by the authorities for reduction in emissions means that the industry and its suppliers are utilising CFD modelling in order to tackle these challenges. The need for high temperature to create and maintain the viscous flow, homogenisation of the glass melt, and maintenance of the process to allow continuous output of glass of the right quality are the contributors to the energy intensive activities that are involved in continuous glass manufacturing. This in turn has resulted in design of large container glass furnaces which have high energy consumption, low specific performance, and high CO2 emissions where the most efficient furnaces in the container glass sector have a specific primary energy consumption of 3.8 GJ /tonne of glass at a level of 50% cullet in the batch making even very small improvements in efficiency by operation optimisation a value adding activity [1-14].The theoretical calculated energy required to melt glass is 2 to 3 times less than the energy actually used to melt glass as a result of glass melt passing a zone 5 to 8 times before leaving the tank.[8]. This causes contamination as the result of mixing between the completely molten glass free from bubbles returning to the batch area where there is freshly molten non-homogeneous glass, still containing very large numbers of bubbles and un-molten batch. At high temperature some components are dissolved rather than melted. Given that an un-molten batch is a good thermal insulator, it can be transported a long way into the furnace, increasing the need for homogenization which also increases the glass residence time of glass melt. This is why large unbroken strings of batch should be avoided, as should an overall blanket without gaps."

During the second quarter of 1983, the economic recovery showed further strength abetted by the performances of consumer spending, residential investment, and the slowing down of inventory reductions. Real gross national product (GNP) increased from the first to second quarter at an annual rate of 9.2 percent, compared with 2.6 percent from the fourth quarter of 1982 to the first quarter of 1983 and an overall 1.9- percent decrease in 1982. Total industrial production increased 1.8 percent in July, and productivity as measured by output per man-hour increased 1.3 percent between 1982 and the first quarter of 1983 (table 1). Especially noteworthy .was the performance of real consumer durable goods expenditures, which increased at an annual rate of 32.0 percent from the first to the second quarter (about half of the increase consisted of automobile sales) and real consumer spending, which increased between these periods at an annual rate of 9.7 percent. Residential investment increased at an annual rate of 76.1 percent between the first and the second quarters,1/ and private housing starts by about 38,000 units in both March and May.

This report describes the geology and reviews the oil-production history of the Dutcher sands of Pennsylvania age in the Muskogee oilfield. The geology and production history are presented not alone as a review of the past behavior of the field but also to interpret the possibilities for future production of oil from semidepleted sands in this and similar areas. The Muskogee field, one of the oldest oil-producing areas in Oklahoma, yields paraffin-base oil of 40° API gravity -a gravity higher than that of most Oklahoma oils. Oil was discovered in the townsite of Muskogee in 1894 but was not produced in commercial quantities until 1904. A peak yearly rate of 1,340,000 barrels of oil was attained in 1910 (see table 1).

This report concerns cooperative milling investigations of the Central mill of the Eagle-Picher Mining &. Smelting Co, The work carried on at the Central mill and the Rolla, Station shows that: It is possible to reduce the Central mill heavy-medium plant tailings by 0.05 to .15 percent zinc; the 3/16-inch to 10-mesh fraction of the jig feed can be treated by sink-float to obtain a tailing containing only half as much zinc as the jig tailing; Humphreys spiral concentration of the flotation tailing does not recover enough zinc to be economically attractive; and crushing and wet grinding of ferrosilicon for heavy medium are commercially feasible. The Eagle-Picher Co. operates extensive mines in the Tri-State area of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The ore is milled at its Central hill, which also accepts custom ores. During the recent war the mill handled about 12,-000 tong- of low-grade ore per day. The company milled about 50 percent of the district tonnage and purchased nearly 90 percent of the custom ore. About 50 percent of the mill feed was from company mines. Zinc is the chief value in the Tri-State ores,-with Varying quantities of lead and cadmium minerals, as well as small amounts of germanium and gallium.

With the ever-increasing demand for energy in all forms, electrical energy generated from geothermal resources could become an important energy source in the next few decades. Geothermal fluids, which contain appreciable quantities of dissolved salts and gases, are generally corrosive to materials of construction. Since data on corrosion of materials in geothermal brines is limited, the literature was surveyed through February 1972 to obtain a compilation of information on corrosion resistance of aluminum and its alloys, copper and copper-base alloys, carbon steel and cast iron, stainless steels, chromium-iron alloys, nickel-and cobalt-base alloys, and titanium in heated brines including sea water.

An accelerated and coordinated program of coal research is believed by many to be a necessary step in assuring coal's proper position in the expanding energy market. The President's Advisory Committee on Energy Supplies and Resources Policy, for example, made the following recommendation: We recognize that coal is a great national asset and endorse a cooperative study to determine what research and development could be undertaken. The coal industry and both Federal and State Governments should participate in this study and its costs. Representatives of the coal industry have agreed that such a study should be initiated. Accordingly, Felix E. Wormser, Assistant Secretary - Mineral Resources, United States Department of the Interior, requested the Bureau of Mines and Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., to conduct a survey of current research on bituminous coal. In addition to this survey, studies were made to determine research projects that would be of value to the coal industry.

Confidence in the strength of the U.S. economic recovery was considerably enhanced by third quarter 1983 profits, which showed a 12.8-percent increase over those in the second quarter (table I). Although the increases were not as great as between the first and second quarter of 1983, profits have grown each quarter since fourth quarter 1982. Both total profits and profits per unit of output increased, which the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) attributes to decreases in labor and nonlabor costs (per unit of output), as well as to moderate price increases. [ ] A number of durable goods sectors, however, continue to show profit declines, especially electrical and non-electrical machinery. Profits in the primary metal industry are still negative, but the economic picture of this industry is improving. Between the second and third quarters of 1983, capacity utilization increased somewhat in primary metal manufacturing and stone and earth mineral mining but did not change at all in metal mining. Capacity utilization in metal materials increased from 47.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 1982 to 64.2 percent in the third quarter of 1983 (table 2).

Exploration of hidden mineral deposits becomes increasingly important as known ore reserves are depleted. The primary objective in any exploratory program is to obtain enough reliable information to evaluate accurately the potential of the mineral deposit. Constant improvement in equipment and technique has established drilling as one of the most valuable methods of exploration. This paper presents the results of studies of several drilling methods currently used in the search for uranium deposits in sedimentary formations from surface drill sites. Also presented is a description of drilling with wire-line equipment from an underground location in metamorphic rocks. The studies were conducted in the Colorado Plateau area and in northwestern New Mexico and Wyoming. Statements of a general nature pertain to conditions or situations existent in those areas.

INTRODUCTION. THE predominating value of the ores now being treated by the Palmarejo and Mexican Gold Fields, Ltd., is silver, although some gold is also carried. The present method of treatment consists of wet-crushing and concentrating, followed by the cyanidation of the unroasted sands and slimes. The sands are treated by leaching and the so-called accumulated slimes by a system of agitation and decantation. It is only within very recent years that the cyanidation of unroasted silver-ores has been commercially successful. In fact, at the time operations were begun at the cyanide-plant at Chinipas, February, 1902, I knew of no other leaching-plant treating similar ores successfully. The cyanide treatment of the Palmarejo ores differs but little from the ordinary practice in cyaniding gold-ores; and perhaps but little, if any, new information concerning the metallurgy of silver is to be gleaned from it. PALMAREJO MINE. The Palmarejo mines are located in the southwestern part of the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, on the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains, at an elevation of 3,200 feet. The mills, 12. miles distant, are situated on the Chinipas river, near the town of Chinipas, which is about 150 miles northeast of Agiabampo, on the Gulf of California. Supplies are shipped via this port as this route is the best and most direct to the property. The ore-bodies in the Palmarejo mines have been deposited. along a series of rock-fractures, caused by an intrusion of eruptive rock. The most important of these fractures or fissures, both in width and value, are the Prieta and Blanca veins, which.

Roberts, Chairman of the Spokane Local Committee, who introduced Mr. J. C. Ralston, City Engineer, representing the Mayor of Spokane and the Spokane Chamber of Commerce. A flat slot is created in rock to cause stress relief effects in a pair of hydraulic borehole pressure cells (previously installed in drill holes above and below the slot ) , which act as sensing devices . This relief is annulled by repressuring the slot by means of a flat hydraulic cell . The slot pressure at annulment is taken to be the existing ground stress at right angles to the plane of the slot . A number of trial installations in the rib of a mine drift showed that for a valid determination of ground stress the sensing devices that respond to relief and repressuring must be within a specified zone close to the pressure transmitter ; otherwise the indicated ground stress may be excessive . By using an additional pair of borehole pressure cells , installed a few feet away , the existing rock stress can be redetermined at intervals , irrespective of a change of stress intensity subsequent to the initial installation . Based on these findings , equipment and procedures have been developed that make possible the installation and operation of a permanent rock stress monitoring station for observing mining - induced stress changes . The station consists of a 12 - in - wide hydraulic pressure cell cemented in a flat slot and four 2- by 8 - in flat hydraulic pressure cells in nearby drill holes . All drilling for the installation can be done with an air leg drill and conventional bits . Once the installation is completed , all required information is obtained by Bourdon pressure gage readings . The apparatus is simple , relatively inexpensive , and reliable under operating conditions in a wet mine . Unlike most methods of rock stress determination , this scheme permits periodic remeasurement of absolute rock pressure over several years , without additional drilling or instrumentation . The techno-economic and social benefits of cemented paste backfill (CPB) resulted in its wide acceptance by the mining industry. The Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) remains the key binder but to diminish its economical constraints, suitability of alternate binders has been examined worldwide. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of partial replacement of OPC with fly ash on the CPB’s strength and to determine the most optimal mix to achieve the required strength (1 MPa at 28 days of curing) at the most cost-effective way using the Bayesian network (BN). The CPB mixes were prepared at 72 wt.% solid concentration with mill tailings (87–91%), OPC (6–13%), and fly ash (0–4%), and instantly after mixing, fresh (slump, bleeding, density) CPB properties were measured. The strength was tested at 7, 14, 28, and 56 days of curing and initially analysed through traditional model. The traditional models follow the aleatory principle and are considered not appropriate for geotechnical engineering. Hence, the BN model was developed and tested. The reliability of two classifiers in learning model structure was compared which gives Naïve Bayes as the highest reliable tool. The CPB’s strength is most sensitive to the OPC content. The most consistent mix(s) is mill tailings: 87–88%, OPC: 9–11%, fly ash: 1–4%. Adding fly ash at 89–91wt% mill tailings possesses high failure probability of the CPB. The collinearity test indicates that the fines percentage and chemical composition of CPB’s ingredients are highly correlated with its slump, bleeding, and strength development.

Geophysical Abstracts are published by the Division of Geophysical Explo- ration of the U. S. Bureau of Mines as an aid to those engaged in geophysical research and exploration. Inasmuch as geophysicists in the field may have little opportunity to consult libraries, the policy of the Division is to provide abstracts suffi- ciently informative in themselves to keep readers abreast of literature and patents published in the United States and abroad. - DISTRIBUTION. Abstracts 1-86 were issued as Information Circulars by the Burca of Mines; Abstracts 87-111 appeared as Bulletins of the Geological Survey; Abstracts 112-127 have been published as Information Circulars by the Bureau of Mines; succeeding issues will be resumed by the Geological Survey.

This report is one of a series based upon investigations made and being made within the Missouri River Basin in Montana by engineers of the Bureau of Mines , Albany Branch , Mining Division . These investigations are made primarily to provide preliminary information to Department of Interior agencies and others concerned with the planning of the proposed Federal power developments within the Missouri River Basin . The present report has been designed to permit public distribution of the factual data obtained . The field investigations in Meagher County were made during tually all 1948 ; Vir- known metallic mineral occurrences within the county were investigated ; some nonmetallic mineral deposits also were investigated . The investigations cannot be considered complete , however , because some long-inactive mines or prospects may have been missed . Most of the old mine and prospect openings are caved; many are completely inaccessible . Many of the claims located years ago have been abandoned ; others have been relocated under different names and ownerships . Because of such conditions , much of the information regarding their development and operation necessarily has been obtained from Federal and State publications , supplemented by information provided by owners and local residents .

The material for this paper was collected for the most part by C. H. Beal during the years 1916, 1917, and 1918. Many of the conclusions reached in regard to the life of oil wells have already been published by the Bureau of Mines 1 but those presented in this paper deal particularly with the theoretical aspects of oil production. The report discusses some of the fundamental factors governing oil production, taking up first the conditions affecting the. amount of oil in the oil sand, then those factors that control the rate of production of oil wells, and then discusses several related problems, most of which deal particularly with the effect of the production of one well on that of another.

In 1919 the United States was threatened with a shortage of gaso- line. In spite of this well-known fact, a detailed field investigation has shown that in one stage only of handling crude oil the volume of gasoline that evaporates is equal to one-thirtieth of the country's yearly gasoline production. This loss occurs during the few days that the oil is stored on the leases before being taken by the pipe line, and in 1919, in the Mid-Continent field alone, it amounted to 122,100,000 gallons. Large as it is, it is only a part of the loss on the lease. Investigation has further shown that the gasoline in crude oil evaporates from one-half to six-tenths as rapidly as the same gaso- line after being distilled and stored, all evaporative conditions being the same. Many wastes in the oil fields are called "necessary." By this is meant that the cost of preventing the waste is greater than the gain through saving. Evaporation losses have fallen heretofore in this category, but now they must be considered unnecessary. In other words, it is no longer economical for any handler of crude oil to permit losses through evaporation. In accordance with its purpose of seeking to conserve mineral resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated the loss of gasoline by evaporation in the storage and handling of petroleum. Inasmuch as most producers had not decided that their losses justified cor- rective measures and no evidence was available on the comparative losses in various stages of handling the oil, the investigation was limited to determining by experiment and observation the nature and magnitude of evaporation losses, where the greatest losses are, and the factor controlling evaporation.

The Kanowna Belle gold mine is located in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, approximately 18 km north-east of Kalgoorlie. The processing plant is designed to process 2 Mt/y and has the capability to treat both refractory and free milling ore from the Kanowna Belle and Kundana mining operations.The Kanowna Belle ore is refractory with the gold mineralisation occurring mostly as fine-grained inclusions in pyrite or as very fine-grained gold located in pyritic arsenic rich growth zones. The Kanowna Belle refractory process includes flotation, roasting of the flotation concentrate, and calcine leaching to extract the gold from the ore.Mineralogical analysis of feed and tailings streams from the flotation circuit have shown that the gold bearing minerals are well liberated and confirmed they are mainly associated with pyrite. Nearly 40% of the flotation circuit losses are in the -38 µm size fraction. To improve the flotation circuit recovery, the fine particle gold recovery was targeted. A Cavitation Tube column was selected for the site-based pilot test work program.
