Methane, a highly explosive gas evolved during the coal-formation process, is one of the hazards of mining most difficult to overcome. It is retained between particles of coal and entrapped in strata overlying and underlying the coal beds to a degree dependent upon the permeability of the enclosing strata. Considering that methane might be encountered at any time during the mining of coal, attempts have been made through the years to minimize the sources of ignition at coal-mine faces, such as the introduction of permissible electric equipment, the prohibition of smoking and open lights, and the development of safer explosives. The sparks created when mining-machine picks contact sandstone or iron pyrites2/ constitute one source of ignition, always recognized as a possibility but never greatly emphasized in the United States until recently, when ignitions began occurring with rather alarming frequency and in widely scattered coal-producing areas.

The nickel industry in Australia has followed the general pattern apparent in many other regions - lots of ups and downs, successes and failures, but always plenty of challenges. Some of these can be attributed to local geographical and infrastructure factors, others to a healthy mix of corporate good luck and management countered by decisions that, in retrospect, were less than optimum. The roles of several entrepreneurs have certainly added plenty of spice! In terms of processing technologies, there was an initial heavy reliance on the use of "off the shelf' commercially proven processes such as ammonia leaching of concentrates and mattes, and flash smelting. Over the past decade there has been an increasing dominance of plant modifications and process technologies that have been developed "in house" in order to enhance project economics and exploit lower grade and more complex resources. This presentation provides an overview of the past 40 years of the major developments in the Australian nickel industry and concludes with some guesses as to where we will be in another decade or so.

Although a number of minerals are imported, especially some designated as "strategic and critical," most U.S. mineral supplies are derived from the domestic mines and processing facilities that you will be seeing, reading about, and visiting as you use this visitor guide. We hope you enjoy your experiences. This pamphlet, a guide to mining and mineral operations that may be observed or visited and some other points of interest relating to minerals, is intended to aid tourists and students who are interested in mining. Some may wish to study our Nation's romantic past; others may plan to enter the minerals industry as a career; still others may have a primary interest in conservation practices. The pamphlet is also intended to aid State and local officials, Chambers of Commerce, and mining firms in answering some of the many questions of tourists and students.

Effective October 1, 1958, President Eisenhower imposed, by Presidential Order, fixed import quotas on lead metal and lead concentrates and also on zinc metal and zinc concentrates. He did this in response to an escape clause case under the Trade Agreements Act filed by many of the large and small lead and zinc mining companies in September 1957. It is the purpose of this paper to give the experience of the lead-zinc industry under this order during its first two years and some observations on what might have come about under different conditions of U.S.A. consumption. Before considering these various experiences and observations, it seems wise to first outline briefly the basic problem which prompted such an order. Under the Tariff Act of 1930, the duty on pig lead was fixed at 2-l/8¢ per pound and slab zinc at 1-3/4e; per pound. The ores, concentrates and closely related products of these metals carried closely related duty rates. The Trade Agreements Act of 1934 and succeeding similar acts had given the, President the power to lower these and other duties. As a result-of various negotiations with foreign nations, by 1951 these duties had been lowered to their present day rates of 1-1/16 per pound on' pig lead and 7/10o, per pound on slab zinc. Related ores, concentrates and semi-fabricated forms of the metals received commensurate treatment. Under these acts, the Tariff Commission has the right to recommend to the President duty increases, specific quotas or both if find that imports have injured the affected industry. He has the right to accept or reject such recommendations, in whole or in part, in the light of the national interest,

The Island of Ceylon, which is one of the most beautiful possessions of the British Empire, has been an abode of man from the very earliest times. The Veddhas, a wild tribe of some 4500 people still living in the fastnesses of the jungle in east central portion of the island, are believed to represent a remnant of the oldest inhabitants of which we have any actual knowledge, but in the caves in which they live there are found the stone axes and other implements of Palaeolithic people who represent the first race of men who inhabited our globe, and of whom they may be, for all that is known, the direct descendants. About the fifth century before Christ there came the Aryan invaders, apparently from the north of India, who drove the Veddhas into the remote fastnesses of the jungle and developed the remarkable Singhalese civilization whose high character is demonstrated by the remarkable and very extensive system of irrigation works which they built up, and through which they made the island wonderfully productive. Great cities arose, some of which are believed to have had a population of over a million souls and whose temples and public buildings show that the people were accomplished architects and sculptors.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines formulated a new mathematical model to characterize iron oxidation. The new model is intended to replace the currently used model, recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), for most acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment applications. The new model was evaluated in a series of five synthetic AMD treatment tests. The initial ferrous iron concentrations ranged from 800 to 2,400 mg/L. In these tests, the Bureau model underpredicted the measured ferrous iron oxidation rates by a range of 3.24 to 8.03 pct. This was considered to be in close agreement after consideration of experimental error. The model proposed by the EPA was also evaluated using the same test data. The EPA model underpredicted the oxidation rates by a range of 77 to 100 pct in four tests and overpredicted by 19 pct in one test. The model formulated by the Bureau expresses that the rate of iron oxidation is a function of a treatment system's oxygen transfer efficiency and is independent of ferrous iron concentration when treated to near-neutral pH's. A new test method for evaluating oxygen transfer in flow-through reactors is also described.

Introduction Most of the Flin Flon ore-body, like many others in northern Canada, was covered by water. The original discovery was made where the ore-body outcropped on a strip of land jutting out into Flin Flon lake. The outcrop could be traced for a distance of 600 feet across the strip of land, but disappeared under the lake on both sides of the peninsula. Following the discovery or location of the property, in 1915, and subsequent to its examination by the H.P. Whitney interests in 1925, an extensive diamond-drilling programme was completed, which proved the existence of an ore-body at least 2,600 feet long and 900 feet deep. In plan, the central part of the ore-body at surface attains an overall width of about 450 feet; including waste horses, and gradually becoming narrower to the south. To the north, it stretches out as a much narrower tongue. The main body is a solid sulphide ore containing gold, silver, copper, and zinc. Adjacent to, and on the footwall side of, the solid sulphide ore-body, there are considerable widths of talcy disseminated copper ore, particularly in the upper 300 feet of the deposit, where the maximum widths occur. The ore-body occurs in a greenstone area, the rock being quite hard on the hanging-wall side, with the footwall schisted, talcy, and much softer. The greater part of the ore-body was overlain by 12 to 15 feet of water and from 15 to 90 feet of mud and clay, this material requiring eventual removal, regardless of the system of mining adopted. The total of mud and clay overburden was estimated at 1,000,000 tons. After considerable study, it was decided to mine the upper 300 feet of the ore-body by open-pit methods; the balance of the ore to be recovered by underground mining . The present paper gives an account of the methods adopted in both operations, and of the problems encountered.

"This paper is the sequel to that on Developments in Sintering Efficiency delivered by Davies and Mitchell at the International Ore Dressing Congress, Stockholm, 1957. Attention is drawn to the fundamental concept of sintering as a heat transfer process, in which the ignition heat is continually transferred onward through the bed as a heat wave. By its passage, this heat initiates endothermic 'changes, such as carbonate decomposition, whose energy requirements are supplied by the combustion of the fuel contained in the bed.Ideally, the heat wave should be generated by the ignition hood followed by the pre-heating of the incoming air. The fuel content of the bed should be no more than the theoretical quantity needed to balance the endothermic changes. In practice, the heat wave is seriously short of energy and this is offset by excess fuel in the bed. As a result, sinter quality suffers, more return .fines are produced, and fuel is wasted, a loss of efficiency which could be avoided if the fundamentals of correct ignition were more widely appreciated.Sintering speed, otherwise heat wave velocity, is a function of the rate at which the incoming air acquires .heat from the cooling sinter and imparts it to the unburned feed below the combustion zone. It is thus a function of rate of air flow and so depends on bed permeability>. Ways of• improving and maintaining permeability at the maximum consistent with thorough sintering are discussed, particular reference being made to taconite concentrates. The possibilities of recrystallizing refractory ores into forms more amenable to physical concentration techniques by sintering are visualised, very little expenditure on heat energy being required when the process is operated near the ideal conditions."

"A successful procedure for the recovery of a valuable product from weathered tank-bottom settlings has been developed in the laboratories of the Bureau of lines and used in a field pilot plant. These heavy emulsion settlings, generally regarded by the industry as waste material, have usually been drained into open pits or storage ponds and eventually destroyed.Laboratory examination of the waste material shows it to consist essentially of a ""water-in-oil"" emulsion containing a considerable volume of congealed ""paraffin."" This paraffin is mainly high-melting-point wax; known in the industry as microcrystalline wax, for which there is an increasing demand.Because of the physical properties of this wax, the tank-bottom settlings are not responsive to conventional methods used for demulsifying ordinary crude-oil emulsions.The work upon which this report is based was conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with -the Kansas State. Board of Health and with special cooperative agreements-with the Cities Service Oil Co, Bartlesville, Okla., and the Bareco Oil Co,. Barnsdall, Okla. This report gives the results of analyzing three groups of crude shale oils by the Bureau of Mines procedure:4/ (1) Oils produced by standard Fischer assay determinations on oil shales from Brazil (Paraiba Valley) and the United States (Colorado); (2) oils produced from Brazilian shale by different retorting methods; and (3) oils from high-temperature retorting of Colorado oil shale in the Entrained Solids retort. It is the second in a series presenting data obtained by analyzing crude shale oils from various sources. The series furnishes information on the general characteristics and compositions of a wide variety of shale oils. Use of a standard analytical method on all samples facilitates comparison of different oils. The 18 oil samples analyzed in this project comprised 3 from assays of Brazilian and Colorado oil shales in the Fischer retort, 9 obtained by processing Brazilian shale in various other units, and 6 from entrained solids retorting of Colorado shale at 1,000° to 1,500° F. The crude oils from Brazilian shale contained about half as much nitrogen as the Colorado oils. Properties of the Fischer assay oils from Colorado shales agreed with some data that relate grade of the oil shale with properties of the crude oil from the Fischer assay. Comparison of results from Fischer assays of oils from the foreign and domestic shales shows that the oil from Brazilian shale contains more low-boiling material and less residuum than either of the two from Colorado shale. This fact is reflected in lower specific gravity, viscosity, and carbon-residue values for the Brazilian oil. Retorting Brazilian shale in the Entrained Solids unit at 1,120° F. produced an oil whose boiling range was generally lower than the boiling ranges of oils obtained by processing in three other retorts at conventional temperatures. The quality of crude oils from high-temperature retorting of Colorado shale in the Entrained Solids process varies with retorting temperature. As the temperature is raised within the range 1,000° to 1,500° F., the amount of the naphtha fraction in the crude oil increases to about 35 percent and the aromaticity to 98 percent.

As part of an interegency agreement with the Energy Research end Development Administration to develop unproved refractory materials for use in coal gasification processes, the Bureau of Mines reviewed the literature to determine the effect of steam, H2, CO, and CH4 as well as the alkali metal oxides K2O and Na2O on refractory materials. Emphasis was given to the performance of high-alumina castable and fired refractories to conditions expected in coal gasification processes. Approximately 85 references were reviewed with 40 cited in the text. The literature was found to contain little data directly applicable to the selection of refractory lining materials suitable for use under the conditions of temperature, pressure, and gas compositions expected in second generation coal gasification reactors.

Percolation leaching of wad-type manganese ores was investigated, using a novel system of alternate upward passage of sulfur dioxide gas through moistened ore and downward percolation of wash solutions to extract solubilized manganese. Bench and large-scale tests designed to simulate vat and heap leaching were made on four wad ores from Arizona and Nevada and on a pailomelane ore from Arizona. Three of the wad ores required prebaking at 500° to 600° C. to produce a permeable agglomerate that would not slake during percolation washing. The hard-type ore and one of the wad ores that contained a large amount of granular gangue did not require prior roasting. The deportment of the different ores toward leaching and percolation was studied with particular reference to the influence of the sulfur dioxide - oxygen ratio and the effect of gas dilution on the rate of manganese dissolution, dithionate formation, and acid production. Crushed charges of the ores, as coarse as 1 inch and as fine as 1/4 inch, were treated for periods of 5 to 11 days. Percolation of the gas and leach solutions through the charges was achieved without difficulty. The manganese extractions varied between 78 and 97 percent and depended upon the size and type of ore leached. The average quantity of sulfur dioxide required in the larger scale tests was about 2.6 pounds per pound of manganese recovered. The dithionate formation varied from 0.35 to 0.9 pound per pound of manganese extracted depending upon the strength of leaching gas.

"All gold deposits within the Tisdale Group are spatially associated with carbonate alteration zones; however, not all carbonate alteration zones are host to gold mineralization.Within the komatiitic and magnesium tholeiitic volcanic rocks at the base of the Tisdale Group, discordant and stratabound carbonate alteration zones occur throughout. The alteration zones consist of a ferroan dolomite - quartz inner assemblage which is enveloped by calcite-quartz and an outer chlorite-rich subzone. Factors which control the distribution of carbonate alteration include joint systems, flow contacts, synvolcanic faults and bulk composition of the host rock.Two environments of carbonate alteration can be recognized: 1) The subsea-floor alteration zones developed within the volcanic rock succession where hydrothermal fluids did not discharge directly onto the sea floor. Insignificant gold production has come from this alteration environment. 2) Seafloor zones, which represent points of hydrothermal fluid discharge into the hydrosphere, are spatially associated with felsic volcanic rock complexes and are host to syngenetic, auriferous cherty dolomite.Carbonatized, magnesium tholeiitic basalts, which are host to the auriferous, cherty dolomite, are enriched in antimony (>0.35 ppm), boron (>30 ppm), gold (>5 ppb) and lithium (> 35 ppm), but are depleted in copper ( < 70 ppm), with respect to carbonatized basalts not associated with gold. Orerelated, altered komatiitic flows can be screened using gold (>5 ppb), lead(> 10 ppm), arsenic(> 70 ppm) and antimony (>1 ppm).The habit, petrographic characteristics and certain geochemical characteristics of the altered volcanic rocks suggest that the hydrothermal fluid was of sea-water origin."

In this paper, some applications of carbon extraction replicas, as samples for transmission electron microscopy (TEM), are discussed. Modern high strength microalloyed (HSMA) steels, used as structural or pipeline materials, have very small grains with substructures. Replicas used in TEM can resolve the grain boundaries and can be used for grain size measurements in cases where the small size of the grains pushes the resolution of conventional optical microscopes. The grain size variations obtained from replicas correlated very well with mechanical property variations, indicated by hardness, in the fine-grained heat-affected zone and base metal of some welded HSMA steels. Replicas are also very suitable samples for precipitate examination with analytical TEM. Advantages and limitations of the application of replicas, as well as some corrections for the estimation of the volume fraction of fine precipitates, are discussed.

For several decades, the minerals industry has used leaching techniques to extract metals from rocks whose grade was too low to be treated profitably using conventional metallurgical techniques, and, as of 1972, about 15% of domestic copper production was derived using leaching methods (Beall 1). Increasing interest is currently being directed toward solution mining, particularly with respect to copper, for basically two reasons. In the first place, geological exploration has outlined several copper deposits of large tonnage and 1m&apos;, grade which are buried at sufficient depth to preclude open-pit mining which would make such mineral deposits ore deposits. Nevertheless, these occurrences provide significant potential if they could be treated by chemical leaching in situ. Secondly, the porphyry deposits of the western united States, which provide by far the largest percentage of domestic copper, do not terminate geometrically with sharp borders. These large disseminated bodies commonly decrease in grade laterally away from volumes of rock containing ore grade metallization, and the distinction between ore and waste is strictly economic. In order to extract ore grade material from the ground, a significant amount of rock containing sub-ore-grade copper must also be removed which, when placed on dumps, is amenable to solution mining. These two considerations clearly indicate the reasons for the growing interest in solution , leaching techniques--namely the ability to exploit deeply buried low grade deposits and the expansion of reserves in deposits currently under production.

I. INTRODUCTION. THE central power-station. of the De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., was designed and built under my supervision about five years ago. Since no detailed description of this plant has ever appeared, it may possess sufficient interest to warrant its publication, even at this late date. Although some additions may have been Blade to the plant, the following account, prepared from my notes, and accurate up to May, 1905 (at which time I severed my connection with the De Beers Com¬pany), will, I think, be found substantially correct. Certain local conditions governing the design of this plant should be stated first. If. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS. The climate is hot and dry. The .region around Kimberley is arid and water is very scarce. The supply obtained from the mines contains so much material in solution that it is unfit for use in boilers or condensers (although tests recently made with a water-softening plant, built by Hans Reisert, of Germany, would indicate that water thus treated is suitable for boilers). And the amount of water required for concentrating about 30,000 tons of ore per day is so large that the question of adequate water-supply for this power-station had to be carefully considered. The rainy season extends from December to April, and the rainfall averages about 15 in. per year. Droughts are frequent; and in some years there is scarcely any rain at all. The water-supply for the town of Kimberley is brought from the Vaal river, 16 miles distant, and pumped into town by a private water company. The charge made for water, which is

IT is now generally admitted by experts that at least so far as rapid progress is concerned the Alpine system of tunnel-driving is superior to any other. This is perhaps natural in view of the record of experience in driving tunnels through the Alps. These great mountain-chains cannot be treated in the ordinary way by shaft-sinking and driving headings, thus multiplying the points of attack. The work must be done from the ends only, hence speed in driving is of the utmost importance; and, as necessity is the mother of invention, the concentration of effort to make progress has resulted in an organization and in mechanical appliances that have produced results so much in excess of the usual practice, even in America, that a discussion of the subject in detail should be of much value to the engineer and contractor. The first Alpine tunnel was the Mont Cenis, length 7.5 miles, driven with a progress that averaged about 7.75 ft. per day. Next came the Saint Gothard, 9.5 miles long, 18 ft. per day; Arlberg, 6.5 miles long, 27.25 ft. per day; Simplon, 12.25 miles long, 36 ft. per day. The figures represent progress when driving from two headings, so that by dividing them in two we get the daily single-heading progress. The latest of the Alpine tunnels is the Loetschberg, now being driven. In this work the world&apos;s record has been beaten by a single day&apos;s record in one heading of 36 ft. and by an average daily record in. one heading of 29.5 feet. The Alpine range forms a natural barrier between a large section of northern and southern Europe. The Bureau of Mines studied some physical properties of hydraulic backfills and their paramount characteristics , and made preliminary attempts to compact this type of material . The in- place density of hydraulic backfills affects the properties of strength , consolidation , and water percolation . Dense fills give better support than loose fills . In - place density properties themselves are affected by grain size , grain size distribution , and the particular conditions of sedimentation in a stope ( the amount of work the slurry water does to compact the material ) . Field sampling of in - place densities of fills presently used in four different mines and laboratory and underground compaction tests using a standard concrete vibrator show that the initial in - place density of the cohesionless fill material tested can be significantly increased by vibratory compaction .
