The amenability of titaniferous slags and domestic mineral concentrates to chlorination was determined in a 6 - inch diameter fluidized bed chlorinator . Ilmenites from Valley County , Idaho ; Aiken , S.C ,; Trail Ridge , Fla .; and MacIntyre , N.Y .; and a titaniferous magnetite from Iron Mountain , Wyo . , were used in preparing the slags . The domestic minerals tested were an ilmenite concentrate from Valley County , Idaho , and a rutile concentrate from Magnet Cove , Ark . A high - grade Australian rutile was used as a standard for comparison . The impurity content of the slags and minerals tested , which was the most critical factor affecting their performance , was dependent on the geographical source of the material . All of the materials tested were amenable to chlorination in a fluidized bed although some required special operating conditions . Titanium extractions and chlorine utilization were over 90 percent for most of the slags and the Australian rutile . The Valley County , Idaho , ilmenite performed well in the reactor despite its 34 percent iron content .

Three of the test methods frequently used for the determination of moisture in the analysis sample of coal were employed in analyzing a series of coals ranging in rank from anthracite to lignite . For most coals , the variation between the three methods are within the tolerances allowed between duplicate determinations by the same method . The processing variables studied included atmosphere , flow rate of atmosphere , inert atmospheres , oven temperatures , heating time , exposure of the dried coal to laboratory air , and surface area of the test sample . Unless close control is kept on these variables , erratic results will be obtained .

In the last decades, the exponential increase in the cells’ volume resulted in significant advantages such as investment costs, footprint and energy savings. However, in larger size cells, despite the increased diameter/height ratio, new constraints arose related to the need for decreasing the larger froth transport distances to enhance the froth recovery. Thus, the use of froth crowders and internal launders became compulsory to maintain the froth transport distances but decreasing the ratio between gas and collected mineral flowrates. Consequently, the bubble load will increase until reaching a critical bubble surface coverage. In this paper, the concentrate carrying capacity (tph/m2) is described in terms of the bubble surface coverage (bubble loading) at the pulp-froth interface and the froth recovery (froth transport) and is evaluated as a function of the cells’ volume and operating variables. A sensitivity analysis, based on industrial operating and design conditions, such as superficial gas rate, particles size, froth crosssectional area and cells’ volume, was developed for evaluating the metallurgical performance of cells from 100 to 630 m3. Results show that limiting carrying capacity can arise for the whole range of cells’ volume, depending on critical operating conditions, particularly in first rougher cells and cleaning stages of industrial flotation circuits. The increase in cells’ volume consistently increases the bubble loading (bubble surface coverage) under all conditions, approaching the limiting conditions more rapidly in the case of cells without internal launders. Otherwise, the limiting condition was achieved when the particle size DPS decreased from 50 to 20 (μm) and for superficial gas rates significantly less or larger than 1 (cm/s). The use of internal launders allows for increasing the range of the operating conditions needed to reach a certain carrying capacity. The hydrodynamic characteristics of a mechanical flotation cell’s transportation zone have significant impact on its metallurgical performance, especially on coarse particles recovery efficiency. However, how to define and adjust the transportation zone was seldom investigated by researchers. In this paper a method will be introduced to define the boundary of the transportation zone by PIV measurement. It is found that the transportation zone can be extended upwards by enlarging the entire rotor-stator assembly from the bottom of tank and increasing the jet angle of the impeller. Two control methods have been validated in industry tests on KYF-160m3 and KYF-320m3 air-forced mechanical flotation cells. The result shows coarse particles recovery are both improved distinctly. It is suggested that enlarging the top transport boundary is able to helpful to reduce the floating distance of bubbleparticle aggregates, which contribute to improve coarse particle recovery in large flotation cells. The George Fisher Underground Mine at Mount Isa applies the long hole open stoping methodology. During the reconciliation process of transverse stopes in the George Fisher North mine it was identified that excessive underbreak was regularly experienced, with the major contribution coming from the toe area inside the stope.While over break and the resultant dilution was well investigated and well understood, limited work was done on underbreak improvement. It was decided that a re-engineering process would be followed in an attempt to improve results. The prevailing stoping practices were scrutinised and the possible causes were listed.Some of the identified causes were design, drilling accuracy, equipment condition, mucking practices and direction of firing. It was identified that in most instances the underbreak was initiated in the slot area of the stope during the first firings. Once this happened, it was impossible to get good recoveries on the rest of the stope. The slot area was carefully scrutinised and the blasting practices were changed individually.During the following two years several different strategies were trialled to increase the toe recoveries. The results indicated an overall improvement of six per cent reduction in underbreak on average, by ensuring drilling accuracy and changing the direction of firing. The economic significance of these results outweighed the time and additional work load expended to establish the cause of the problem. This paper outlines the continuous improvement process undertaken to identify and rectify the major contributing factors to the problem. It also presents a set of recommendations to be followed in order to achieve positive results.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE ACTION OF TETRANDRINE ON SILICOSISBecause of the persistent presence of silica dust in the lungs silicosis is a progressive and irreversible disease. At present, there is no proven effective therapy for silicosis. Limited choices of therapeutic intervention with corticosteroids and other immunosuppressive regimens 1,2 have been accepted for some forms of pulmonary fibrosis. These treatments are only minimally effective, and the results provide little understanding of the disease state due to the lack of correlation between drug activity and the mechanism of fibrosis. Thus, continuing effort must be made in the search for effective antifibrotic agents, which may be used to provide a sequential analysis of the fibrotic process and to open the door for further research and clinical development. Tetrandrine is one of hundreds of drugs screened for antifibrotic activity by Chinese scientists. It has been used in China as a treatment for silicosis in open clinical trials3 and in laboratory animals. The action of tetrandrine on pulmonary fibrosis has been attributed to its ability to inhibit particle stimulation of alveolar macrophages, a key cell type central to the fibrotic process, to release oxygen radicals and inflammatory cytokines. Alveolar macrophages (AM) residing on the alveolar wall, are the predominant phagocytic cells of the lungs responsible for pulmonary defense against inhaled microorganisms and other particles and thus play an important role in maintaining the homeostasis of the lungs. 7 Ample evidence suggests that cells of the monocyte-macrophage series play an important role in the immunopathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis. When upregulated by silica, alveolar macrophages generate reactive oxygen metabolites8·9 which can damage lung parenchyma and release fibrogenic growth factors and cytokines, 10,11 such as interleukin 1 (IL-1), which can induce fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis. The cytokine-mediated fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis are key steps in the development and progression of pulmonary fibrosis .11 Previous studies by our group have shown that tetrandrine exhibits strong binding affinity to AM and inhibits particle-stimulated respiratory burst activity (oxygen consumption, superoxide anion release, and hydrogen peroxide secretion) in these cells. 13 In addition, studies by Kang et al. 14 have reported that tetrandrine inhibits silica-induced release of fibrogenic factors such as IL-1 which are capable of inducing fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis. Reist et al. 15 further suggested that the antifibrotic action of tetrandrine may be mediated in part by the direct effect of this drug on the ability of fibroblasts to respond to proliferative agents. These results indicate that the mechanism of silicosis involves activation of AM and fibroblasts by silica, resulting in abnormal collagen production due to miscommunications between the cell types. Tetrandrine may interrupt this process by direct interaction with the lung cells.

PT. Krakatau-POSCO coke making plant, located in Cilegon, Indonesia, is the results of the know-how and experience of Paul Wurth (PW) in coke making field. The plant has a capacity of 1,321,000 t/y of gross coke achieved by two coke oven batteries with 42 top charging Paul Wurth “Jumbo” ovens each. PW “Jumbo” oven with a useful volume of 78,92 m3 allows decreasing drastically the number of pushing/charging operation per day with a consequent reduction of the diffuse emissions. Gas treatment plant with a capacity of 88000 Nm3/h has been designed in collaboration with DMT GmbH & Co. KG, adopting the latest technologies with specific design know-how. PT. POSCO-Krakatau plant has been successfully commissioned and started-up in October 2013. The present paper will highlight the main technology features applied in PT. Krakatau-POSCO project for both coke oven and gas treatment plants.

Discrete element method (DEM) has been used as a popular simulation method to verify designs by visualising how material will flow through complex equipment geometries. Although DEM simulation is a powerful design tool, finding a DEM model which includes real material properties (e.g., shape, cohesion and friction coefficients) is not computationally feasible. In order to obtain more realistic results, particle energy loss due to rolling friction has been highlighted by many researchers. To implement a reverse torque to account for rolling friction, various models have been proposed. On account of the complexity of the problem, there is no unique model for all applications (i.e. dynamic and pseudo-static regimes). In this paper, an in-house developed DEM software (KMPCDEM ©) was used to assess the robustness of three commonly used models by comparing the repose angle of iron ore pellets obtained through the draw down test in a laboratory setup and then the elastic–plastic spring dashpot model was modified based on considering the individual parameters instead of relative parameters of two contact entities. Results showed that the modified model could produce higher repose angle. The modified model was used to calibrate DEM simulation of repose angle of iron ore pellets in a laboratory setup of the draw down test. Comparison of the calibrated DEM simulation and laboratory results showed 2° differences between the predicted and measured angle of repose. This difference was attributed to considering the particle shape effects by assuming a spherical shape for particles. Keywords: DEM, rolling friction,particle shape, repose angle

The Meekatharra mining district lies in the northern pan of the Murchison Province of the Archaean Ynlgam block of Western Australia. Since dis- covery of the Paddy's Flat belt in the district in 1897 total gold production has been 67 tonnes and a further 33 tonnes in resources have been defined by drilling. The Paddy's Flat gold deposits occur within the Gabanintha Formation, a basal formation of the Murchison greenstone sequence containing komatiitic basalts, ultramafics and minor banded iron formations. The regional control on the distribution of deposits is an anastomosing shear belt which extends over 350 km and incorporates the Mt Magnet, Reedys and Meekatharra deposits. The following gold deposit styles may be recognized based on lithological association and alteration: Albite porphyry hosted, Carbonate-fuchsite- quartz alteration hosted deposits, Banded Iron Formation hosted sulphide replacement gold deposits and quartz vein deposits. With the exception of the banded iron formation hosted deposits, the Paddy's Flat alteration zone shows strong similarities to the alteration styles at Kerr-Addison (Ontario).

Technological advances the sensor design and performance for logging while drilling (LWD) instrumentation offer considerable opportunities in iron ore exploration. Here we focus on the development of a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) LWD tool. NMR is an advanced geotechnical logging technology capable of providing in situ measurements of the porosity, pore size and permeability of the formation of interest. The ability to provide real-time characterisation of iron-ore systems is beneficial to both drilling operations as well as real-time formation evaluation. The development of an NMR LWD tool for mineral exploration drilling has previously not been achieved due to the significant technical and environmental challenges associated with the design and operation of such a tool. The tool outlined in this work is designed to work in reverse-circulation (RC) drilling systems. As such, the tool needs to be compatible with the RC drill-string, as well as being highly robust to survive the shocks and vibrations experienced during RC drilling operations. The magnetic physics of the probe must be capable of measuring at the appropriate depth into formation whilst being subject to the array of motions experienced during drilling operations. Furthermore, conducting accurate NMR measurements in an iron ore formation is challenging and the measurement methodology must be tailored to characterise the magnetic environment. The tool also requires high-powered electronics capable of operating the necessary pulse sequences for excitation and acquisition. The resultant tool design must therefore optimise the inherent trade-offs which exist between the physical components (ie mechanical structure, magnetic components and electronic hardware) in order to operate appropriately whilst not hindering RC drilling operations. Current experimental analysis of the prototype indicates that the current probe design exhibits the required measurement specifications and is nearing field testing. Future work will look towards commercialisation of the instrument.

Molten slag from pyrometallurgical furnaces is tapped at high temperature, carrying a large amount of thermal energy. But the common slag dumping and water granulation methods used for slag treatment do not permit energy recovery. Furthermore, water is present in these processes and while operations are designed to minimize risks of steam explosions, from the contact of slag with water, these common slag handling practices have never been inherently safe. Common handling practices do permit some slags to be sold, but often in low volumes at low prices. Dry granulation offers advantages over these common slag handling practices, including the production of by-products, the recovery of thermal energy, and the eliminated consumption and safety hazards of water. For these reasons, there have been various studies in dry granulation and heat recovery, but most have never been brought to commercial scale due to scalability and cost challenges. Ecomaister- Hatch has developed and brought to commercial scale a reliable and simple dry granulation and heat recovery technology. Here we review common slag handling practices, the developments in dry slag granulation over the last three decades, introduce the Ecomaister-Hatch dry slag granulation process, and elaborate on future applications of the technology in the processing of argon oxygen decarburization and blast furnace slags.

Conveyor system wear of belts and transfers attribute to a significant proportion of the maintenance costs and lost productive hours when handling hard abrasive ores at high unit rates typical of the iron ore industry. The recent growth phase has seen a rapid increase in mine and export capacity, with many new and upgraded plants operating at high throughput and utilisation. Subsequently, the industry has progressed to an optimisation phase, seeking to maximise production capacity and reduce maintenance costs with minimal capital spend. To support this, a programme of modifying designs was executed to improve conveyor transfer chute and belt life, which identified a need to challenge the industry practice for specification of designs to improve the functionality of the installed equipment. While acknowledging the importance of selecting the highest wear resistant materials for the intended application, this paper investigates design criteria related to decreasing conveyor transfer and belt wear. Of focus is a shift in the manner in which designs are specified, from specifications primarily governing geometrical constraints, to those meeting technical and functional requirements aimed at producing optimum geometry for a given set of material handling parameters. An assessment of transfer design criteria is presented.

Perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH), a member of the perfluorocarbon tracer group of compounds, has been shown to be a viable supplement to the widely used tracer gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). This viability stems from the fact that PMCH can be used concurrently with SF6 while maintaining adequate chromatographic separation and comparable sensitivity during analysis. However, the release of PMCH in an underground mine ventilation system is challenging due to its physical characteristics. While SF6 exists as a gas at room temperature and pressure and can be accurately released by a variety of means, PMCH exists as a volatile liquid at room temperature and pressure, preventing it from being deployed in a similar manner. One method to release PMCH is to use a permeation plug passive release vessel (PPRV), which allows for the controlled release of the gas. This paper presents the results of a study evaluating various preparation techniques, plug thicknesses and plug materials of an aluminumvessel PMCH release source, so that a source appropriate for the mine scale may be developed.

Calcium oxide, with its ability to capture and store carbon dioxide, is emerging to become an important tool in carbon management. Calcium oxide can be used reversibly to capture carbon dioxide in situ and then be regenerated to produce a pure stream of carbon dioxide ready for sequestration; the Zero Emission Coal Alliance technology utilizes this property of calcium oxide to generate emissions-free electric power from coal. The reaction of calcium oxide with carbon dioxide resulting in thermodynamically stable carbonate is well understood; however, the efficiency of this reaction is limited by the diffusion of gases through bulk calcium oxide and through a layer of carbonate formed on the surface. In addition, the regeneration of calcium oxide is an endothermic reaction and is favored at high temperatures. The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to address the diffusion limitation, a thin layer of calcium oxide, supported on a high surface area material, is studied thermogravimetrically to demonstrate the physical adsorption of carbon dioxide on calcium oxide. The adsorption is to take place at temperatures lower than required to form calcium carbonate.

"Studies of the process of concentration of gold-containing sands and technogenic resources show that the main reason of gold losses is misbalance between size of gold particles and degree of roughness of mineral bed. This results in free circulation of small gold particles in pores with following washing off the particles from the bed by turbulent flows.We elaborated design of magnetic sluice, intended for improving efficiency of recovering fine gold by optimizing magnetic field of a magnetic system on the base of forming catching coat from magnetic mineralsThe magnetic sluice includes trough-shaped body from magnetic-conducting material. On the bottom of the trough, magnets are placed, and opposite poles of the magnets are oriented outwards. Thickness of the bottom is determined to be sufficient for locking magnetic lines of force of the magnets on each other. The magnets of rectangular plate shape are placed on the rough bottom, covering the whole surface or with spare areas; the magnets are placed across the trough with alteration of rows with the same pole orientation."

The first part describes a model (the C model) based on the motion of the grinding charge. The charge is treated as a continuum, which allows analytical solutions to the equations that are developed. The C model is equally applicable to ball-, semi-autogenous and autogenous mills and contains a description of the power draw of both the cylindrical section and the cone-ends. Differences between the power draw of grate- and overflow-discharge mills are described from consideration of the different shapes and compositions of their charges. A large database of industrial mill data is used to demonstrate the accuracy of the model. Part 2 describes a simpler, empirical model (the E model) whose performance is based on that of the C model. The same database was used to assess the predictive capabilities of the E model. The model was shown to be only slightly less accurate than the C model despite its much simpler structure
