Rare Element Resources Inc., a U.S. based company, has developed a three-stage process for producing a +98% mixed REO powder from hard rock feedstock (-48 mesh, 2.9-4.8% REO) consisting of bastnaesite and ancylite minerals. Firstly, the whole ore is digested in chloride media at low temperature in counter-current flow mode. Secondly, the rare earths (REEs) are selectively precipitated as oxalates directly from an impure pregnant leach solution (PLS). Finally, significant amounts of free acid and water are recovered from the REE-depleted filtrate and subsequently recycled within the process. Excess heat from the oxalate calcination process is captured and reused in the plant. Due to the low leach temperature (45 ºC) and moderate acid dosage (240-297 kg/t, HCl), rare earth oxides (REOs) are preferentially leached out of fine solids leaving most of the base metals (Ba, Fe, and Al ) in the residue. Selective recovery of REEs from the PLS is achieved by mixing dilute oxalic acid (33% H2C2O4) and PLS at elevated temperature (85-95 ºC). The REEs plus thorium are precipitated as oxalates (REE2 (C2O4).xH2O) while the base metals are left behind in the barren filtrate. Multiple batch and pilot test results have confirmed that 50-80% of the oxalic acid can be recovered from the REE-depleted PLS through low-temperature crystallization (10-15 ºC). Typical leach efficiencies of critical rare earths at 45 ºC range from 85-99% (average 93%) while oxalate precipitation at high temperature increases the crystal size of RE oxalates (>450 microns, d80) thereby improving filtration. The economic benefits of this process include elimination of flotation and magnetic separation Capex and driving hydrometallurgical Opex down to $6- 7/kg, REO produced. As part of a comprehensive risk mitigation strategy, Rare Element Resources Inc has operated multiple pilot plants at SGS in Lakefield, Ontario, Canada to optimize counter-current leaching (CCL), REE oxalate precipitation (OXP), and thorium removal circuits. Copper mine operations consistently generate a large quantity of tailings after their concentration processing. These tailings are either piled up or stored in a dam, where both alternatives of disposal lead to environmental impacts. The dam copper tailings have a huge potential for by-product production thus improving sustainability and profitability in industrial operations. This paper describes a study aiming at producing a magnetite pellet feed as a by-product from a dam chalcopyrite flotation tailings and generating free magnetite non-magnetic rougher tailings. The chemical assay and mineralogy analysis of dam copper flotation tailings indicate low Fe grade (6.34 wt%), high SiO2 grade (63.14 wt%), low magnetite (3.6 wt%), and high iron silicates content (22.72 wt%). The complex mineralogy of these tailings leads to the need of grinding the rougher magnetite pellet feed as fine as 80% of particles smaller than 20 μm ( P80) aiming at improving magnetite liberation. The proposed process route comprises a scalping screen, low field rougher, and cleaner magnetic separations using a drum magnetic separator (80 kA/m or 1000 Gauss), followed by silicates reverse cationic flotation as a recleaner step. With this process route, it was possible to produce a high-quality magnetite pellet feed reaching 68.00 wt% of Fe, 2.13 wt% of SiO2, 0.51 wt% of Al2O3, and 95.1 wt% of magnetite. The Blaine specific surface area was 2300 cm2/ g, being in the range recommended for pelletizing (1900 up to 3000 cm2/ g). The total mass, Fe, SiO2, Al2O3, and magnetite recoveries were 2.77%, 29.71%, 0.09%, 0.12%, and 73.17%, respectively. Most of the magnetite losses, around 20% of total magnetite fed, occurred in the oversize of the scalping screen. Additionally, it generated non-magnetic rougher tailings with less than 1.0 wt% of magnetite that could be used as by-products and reduced the amount of tailings disposal in a dam. This study contributes toward the sustainability of operation, minimizing tailings disposal.

The heats of formation at 273°K of the compounds Mg2Ge, Mg2sn, and Mg2b, the heats of fusion and melting points of Mg2Sn and Mg2Pb, and the heats of solution of magnesium, germanium, and lead in liquid tin have been measured. The excess free energies of the liquid alloys and the free energies of formation of magnesium-Group IVB compounds at their melting points and their standard free energies of formation at 298°K have been calculated. The stability and bonding of the compounds are discussed with reference to these properties. Some thermodynatnic aspects of the liquid phases in the systems Mg-Sn and Mg-Pb are also considered. THE compounds of magnesium with the Group TVB elements, silicon, germanium, tin, and lead, have often been considered to constitute a nearly ideal homologous series. In particular, their thermodynamic stability has been assumed to decrease with increasing atomic number of the Group IVB element.' The binary-phase diagrams of the magnesium-Group IVB elements given by Hansen and Anderko2 have the same form. Each system has a single con-gruently melting compound of limited homogeneity range. The structures of these compounds, which have the formula Mg2X, are anti-isomorphous with the calcium fluoride structure. A recent investigation has found evidence of a second compound in the system Mg-Pb.3 The solid compounds Mg2Si, Mg2Ge, and Mg,Sn are semiconductors, while the conductivity of Mg2Pb approaches that of a metallic conductor. This difference suggests that other properties may also show a discontinuity. The investigation reported here is concerned with the thermodynamic properties of magnesium-IVB compounds and particularly their variations with the period of the Group IVB element. The heats of formation at 273°K of the compounds MgzGe, Mg2Sn, and Mg2Pb and the heats of fusion and melting points of Mg2Sn and Mg2Pb have been measured. The results, combined with published data, are interpreted in relation to the stability and the bonding characteristics of the compounds. Some thermodynamic aspects of the liquid phases in the systems Mg-Sn and Mg-Pb are also considered. In the course of the investigation the heats of solution of magnesium, germanium, and lead in liquid tin have been determined. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES 1.1) Samples. Samples of the compounds Mg2Ge, Mg2Sn, and Mg2Pb, supplied by Professor P. Aigrain, Compagnie Générale de Télégraphie Sans Fils, were used in measuring heats of formation, heats of fusion, and melting points. Samples of Mg2Sn and Mg2Pb, supplied by Dr. V. B. Kurfman, Dow Metal Products Co., samples of Mg2Sn, prepared at the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories, and samples of MgzPb, prepared in this laboratory, were used for additional measurements of the heats of fusion and the melting points. The samples were stored in evacuated Pyrex capsules or under nonreacting liquids. 1.2) Heats of Formation. The heats of formation at 273°Kof the compounds Mg2Ge, Mg2Sn, and Mg,Pb were measured by tin-solution calorimetry. In this method, samples of the compound and of a mixture of the constituent elements are added alternately from 0°C to a tin-rich bath. The difference between the heat effects, corrected for the change in composition of the bath, is the heat of formation of the compound. Details of the method have been given elsewhere. 4 The bath was maintained at 350°C for the dissolution of the compounds MgzSn and Mg2Pb. Since at this temperature the dissolution of Mg2Ge was too slow, a bath temperature of 400" or 450°C was used with this compound. At least three calorimetric runs, each of approximately six additions, were made with each compound. 1.3) Heats of Solution. The determination of the heats of solution of magnesium, germanium, and lead in tin was included in this investigation because they were not well-established at the time this work was started. At the beginning of the previous chapter, variation in the types of room-and-pillar stopes were briefly identified so that the reader could begin to understand the extensive application of this mining system. These same variations will be reviewed and elaborated upon in this chapter while discussing the methods by which the material is extracted. FULL-FACE SLICING BY DRILLING AND BLASTING When the entire mineralized thickness is taken in one pass of mining, it is known as full-face slicing. There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the back. Theoretically, there is no limit as to how high the face could be in a single pass. But there are practical limitations to equipment size, pillar stability, and control of local loose slabs on the face, roof, and pillars that dictate current practices. The range of face height of the 15 typical room- and-pillar mines covered in Table 8 (Sec. 1, Subsec. 7) from the Dravo report, 1974 was 1.7 m (5.5 ft) to 9.8 m (32.1 ft), the average being 5.2 m (17.1 ft). In the Gaspe copper mine, Murduchville, Que., the drill jumbos were constructed with an extendable tower for full-face mining up to 15.2 m (49.9 ft) if necessary. However, a more common practice at that mine is to take the ore in multiple slices (Hall, 1959). In many metal mines the normal practice when starting stoping is to drive a single development drift into the ore zone a distance that will allow at least four or five rooms to be opened on each side of the initial drift. Since this opening will probably serve as the main haulage drift, it should be kept as straight and as level as possible. As to the other criteria for the stope developments, it might be well at this point for the mine planner to review the remarks presented earlier (Sec. 1, Subsec. 7) on drifts, entries, and crosscuts for production. After the initial drift is driven, it should be slabbed to the full room width if it is not that wide already. Next, the future pillars should be marked on the ribs and the rooms driven between them. If the ore extends beyond the length of the initial drift and is to be mined in the normal sequence of mining, care should be taken in a random room-and-pillar system to see that the extension of the initial roadway remains straight. If pillar "spotting" is left to the shift foreman or to the miners, they probably will not realize the importance of maintaining a uniform pillar line next to the roadway, and of keeping the line straight. Invariably, a pillar will end up in the middle of the future drift extension resulting in a "dogleg" in a possible main haul- age road. While this error is not catastrophic, too much weaving in and out of pillars will certainly slow down future production haulage and needlessly increase costs. Face or Breast Drilling and Blasting Practices To drill and blast the initial advances into the rock, usually some form of cut pattern must be used. In room-and-pillar mining, when a pattern is drilled in a face and that face is the only exposed surface to which all of the rock must be broken, the pattern is known as a "face round" or "swing." The face to which the rock must be broken is referred to as a "free face." Thus the most common way to advance a room into virgin rock with only one free face is by drilling swings. If, after breaking around a pillar, taking down back, or taking up bottom, there is a second (or third) face exposed, a group of holes drilled nearly parallel to a free face and breaking to it is known as a "slab round" or "slabbing." In some mining districts it is also known as "slashing." Obviously, because two faces exposed offer less resistance to fragmentation than a single face, slabbing requires less drilling and fewer explosives than required to break the same tonnage with the same degree of fragmentation with swings. A series of Al-Cu alloys has been cast from constant superheat to solidify either with a hot top or with a free liquid/air interface. All the other variables which affect relative fluid motions were kept constant except the imposition of slow rotations m oscillations of the mold. Depending upon the exact circumstances, evi-dence could be found for the nucleation of equiaxed grains from dendrite bits detached from the columnar zone, or from the free surface, or from solid bits induced at pouring; a special experiment showed the solute buildup during ingot solidification and by inference the reality of constitutional supercooling. All methods of grain nucleation are thus supported. When solidification is arranged in a static mold the columnar- to-equiaxed transition occurs by one of these nucleation paths, subject to the natural decay of temperature gradients which promotes nucleation or the survival of nuclei. But when solidification is forced under special fluid flows it may display odd transitions. In one of these the equiaxed zone is synihesized from. dendrite bits detached from the solid/liquid interface. These survive under the concurrent lowering of temperature gradients and eventually cause transition by impeding columnar growth. GRAIN structure control is desired because real experience shows that specific properties are associated with specific cast grain structures. But since control is thus a matter of need and does not require understanding, much of casting remains art. For example, the manipulation of relative fluid motions in simple ingots provides a control of grain structure development,1-4 but theoretical insight is not required in order to broaden its potential applicability. Fortunately, however, once a variable like fluid flow is recognized it can also provide paths toward new insight. New observations using this variable have provided an insight which is curious. All the theories or descriptions of the columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) seem to be supported as long as the appropriate experiment is carried out. In order to develop this idea, let us ignore segregation, the chill zone (until a later section of this paper), and the origin and development of the columnar zone.= The details of questioning how equiaxed material forms in a casting may be divided in two. The first part is simply a questioning of the origin for equi-axed grains: are there fresh nuclei from heterogeneous nucleation, or dendrite bits broken off or melted from the columnar zone or elsewhere,6 or other solid bits surviving from the outset of freezing? The second is more complex, a questioning of the CET: does columnar growth slow down and allow the dominance of equiaxed grains, however they are formed, or do equi-axed grains take over and force columnar growth to stop? This "chicken-or-the-egg" second question can be quite useful, especially because it allows us to delineate the ordinary or NATURAL EQUIAXED ZONE and the induced or SYNTHETIC EQUIAXED ZONE. A natural equiaxed zone occurs if solidification proceeds in the absence of disturbances or extraneous forces such as ultrasonics, stirrings, and so forth. Both the CET theory proposed by Winegard and Chal-mers, 7requiring constitutional supercooling, and the CET theory suggested by Chalmers,8 requiring nuclea-tion only on pouring, pertain to the natural equiaxed zone. The best collating evidence to date for both these theories is contained in the work by Biloni and Chal-mers;9,10 the former theory7 is supported by special versions of the unidirectional growth experiment performed by Plaskett and winegardl1 and the latter theory' is supported in detail for the solidification of small ingots. An equiaxed zone can be synthesized when disturbances caused by forced fluid flows2-4 or other artificial means9,10 break off or melt off dendrite tips from an advancing solid/liquid interface,* if (and only if) temperature gradients in the melt are (forcibly) reduced enough to ensure the survival of these bits of dendrites, 2'3 Willful disturbances even so trivial as those produced by rapping a mold might be included here; as will be shown for example, this follows Southin's suggestion that the free liquid/air interface

The relationship of coal characteristics to the principal types of firing equipment has been known to the coal combustion engineer, but is not as familiar a subject for purchasing agents, salesmen, consumers, and executives of coal-producing and consuming companies. This general survey of characteristics determined by standard laboratory tests, of major types of combustion techniques, and of the relationships between the two is directed toward the latter audience. It will also serve as a review for those actively engaged in the combustion of coal. Although the relationship of coal characteristics to the principal types of firing equipment is well known to the experienced coal combustion engineer, apparently there is need for a summary article on this subject. The author has received numerous requests for such a paper from purchasing agents, coal salesmen, coal customers and executives of coal-producing and consuming companies. Consequently, the scope of this paper will be directed to this audience, with the hope that it may serve also as a review to others actively engaged in the combustion of coal. The magnitude of this subject is so great that only a brief general treatise is possible. The author realizes that because there are so many special cases and exceptions to the generalities which follow, he is in jeopardy of contradicting himself. It is the hope, however, that the many references cited will prove valuable to those who wish to study the details excluded by necessity, due to space and time limitations. Hence, the characteristics of coals as determined by standard laboratory tests will be discussed; the major types of combustion techniques reviewed; and then the characteristics and firing will be related. CHARACTERISTICS OF UNITED STATES COALS The coals of the United States range from lignite to anthracite and each has its own general characteristics. The extensive coal fields of the U. S. are shown in Fig. 1 and the estimated reserve according to rank for each state is illustrated in Fig. 2. Coals may be classified according to rank as shown by Table I from the ASTM Standards on Coal and Coke, D-338-38.1 The basis of this classification is ac- cording to fixed carbon and heating value (Btu per pound) calculated to a mineral-matter-free basis. The high-rank coals are classified according to fixed carbon on the dry basis; and the low-rank coals according to Btu on the moist basis. Agglomerating and slacking (weathering) indices are used to differentiate between certain adjacent groups. While rank is not itself a characteristic it does signify certain characteristics that accompany a class of fuel. Anthracite, for example, immediately implies a hard, free-burning, smokeless coal of low volatile matter, usually having an ash of high fusibility. Coals may also be classified according to grade as described by ASTM Designation D-398-37.1 This quality classification is determined by size, calorific value, ash, ash-softening temperature, and sulfur. This type of classification is not used as extensively by the industry as the rank classification. Fig. 3 shows the heat value of different ranks compared to proximate analyses. Coals may also be classified by sizes, as shown in Tables IIA and IIB, and sizes can be on both top and bottom limits. If this is done, then the coal is called double screened; otherwise, either top or bottom sizes can be specified as a limit. Bituminous coal sizing varies from field to field and depends upon the market demand. The common sizes and their main uses are outlined in Table IIA. Anthracite is usually available in many sizes at the colliery, and Table IIB summarizes standard sizes and names. Although rank, grade, and size designations help identify and describe a coal in question, there still remain other characteristics such as indicated by moisture, free swelling index, grindability tests, etc. A bituminous coal information chart Table III) suggested for use in studying the available coals in a region, lists origin and chemical and physical characteristics. Even this more comprehensive list does not completely spell out all the characteristics of a heterogenous material like coal. For example,

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 352 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 18 States and 5 foreign countries. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1974 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economics. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. Sixteen previous publications have presented the results of 10,479 gas analyses prior to 1974. The first three, Bulletins 486,4 576,5 and 617,6 contain analyses and related source data on

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 547 natural gas samples from 22 States and three foreign countries. Of this total, 340 samples were collected during calendar year 1967. The remaining 207 analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting, permission to publish the results were not received until 1967. All samples were collected as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. The Bureau of Mines has conducted this survey in the United States since 1917, and in 1965 it was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 516.4 Nine previous publications have been made to present results of 7,618 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1967. The first three, Bulletins 486,5 576,6 and 6177 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960. The other six

This paper is one of r series published by the Bureau of Mines dealing with the mineral resources of western South Dakota. The mining of pegmatite minerals is described mainly from the standpoint of the feldspar industry, as most of the other .pegmatite minerals produced are recovered as byproducts from the mining of feldspar. Feldspar is shipped from the Black Hills by three companies, all operating in the southern Hills. Because the pegmatites of the northern Hills, represented by tae Tinton area, have been described in other papers3/ of this series, the present paper is confined to the pegmatite dikes of the southern Black Hills. Emphasis is placed upon the current activity in pegmatite mining; little attention is given to the history of many famous mines in the district, and information concerning them may be obtained by consulting resorts cited in the bibliography. The field work was carried on from July 28 to October 15, 1938. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The geology of the Black Hills has been studied almost continuously during the last half century. A wealth of literature has attempted to explain the geology and mineralogy of the pegmatite dikes of this region. Lime is of tremendous importance to modern industries. In agriculture it is regarded as essential to the continued fertility of many important regions; in building it is indispensable, and in the many ramifications of the chemical industries it is so necessary and so widely employed that it has been designated "the king of all the bases." Figure 1 shows a general view of a modern lime plant producing more than 500 tons of lime daily. In 1924 the production of lime was reported from nearly every State in the Union and amounted to more than 4,000,000 tons, valued at, nearly $40,000,000. For a production of that magnitude between 8,000,000 and 9,000,000 tons of limestone are required. The many problems involved in winning this great quantity of raw material from the natural rock and preparing it for the kilns have in the past received little attention from any governmental agency. Therefore, in compliance with a request from representatives of the National Lime Association in 1922, the Bureau of Mines began a study of problems in limestone quarrying in an effort to advance more economical methods of operation and the utilization of waste material. Field studies were made at many quarries, and the information thus compiled, besides data already at hand from work in other branches of the stone industries, were disseminated to operators in the form of mimeographed Reports of Investigations, eight of which were issued at intervals during 1922, 1923, and 1924. A questionnaire was appended to each report, and quarry operators were invited to contribute additional information obtained as a result of their actual experience and observation. Operators of lime plants have been cordial in their responses and have supplied the bureau with much valuable information. From the data thus obtained, supplemented by later field studies, the revised reports have been combined to form the major part of this bulletin, which is believed fairly to represent present knowledge on the subject of quarrying limestone for lime manufacture.

The mining laws of Russia (Collection of Laws, vol. 7, 1912) are still in force in Latvia. The Free State of Latvia (declared independent on November 8, 1918) is composed chiefly of the Baltic Provinces of the former Russian Empire, which are ethnographically Lettish: The Province of Courland, four districts of the Province of Livonia, and three districts of the Province of Vitebsk. Since the establishment of its independence, Latvia has not felt the need of a special mining law, inasmuch as mining so far has not been found profitable in that country. A supplement to this paper, entitled "Mineral Resources," is a brief summary of the minerals found and utilized in latvia. RIGHTS OF FOREIGNERS A foreign individual is permitted to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in Latvia on equal terms with Latvians. A foreign corporation is required to establish a branch in Latvia, which shall be subject to the corporation laws of the country. A certain number of the partners or incorporators must be citizens of Latvia.

Within the minerals industry, flotation is the predominant method when processing sulphide ores. There is hardly any competition in this area because of the high efficiency and low costs of flotation. When processing other ore types magnetic or gravity• methods are commonly used and sometimes leaching methods are selected. The wide variation of the properties of gold (high value, low ore grades, softness, high specific gravity etc.) sets challenging requirements to the processing methods and particu­larly for flotation machines, which should be able to effectively recover free fine gold, coarse gold and gold bearing minerals throughout the full size range. In gold processes the amount of concentrate is usually low, but in some cases large amounts of gold bearing sulphides e.g pyrites has to be recovered. In gold processing seldom does only one method provide the optimum results, but the recovery is usually made using several complementary technologies: gravity separation, leaching and flotation are the most common ones. Mineralogy is the determin­ing factor when selecting the method or methods to be used.

Although a regulation is in force that all water used underground shall be free of bacterial contamination, in practice it is often very difficult to accomplish this. The standard method of disinfection m South African mines IS treatment with calcium hypochlorite, although liquid sodium hypochlorite is used at a few sites. Primarily because the process depends on human control for the addition of the hypochlorite and the regulation of its now, it is frequently found difficult to disinfect mine water adequately and continuously. In many marine environments, chlorine generated by the electrolysis of seawater in its passage through an electric cell is used for disinfection. The generation procedure is continuous and needs no human control except for occasional checking of the equipment. This paper describes the successful implementation of the process, suitably .modified, .at four underground sites. After severe scaling problems had been overcome, a procedure resulted that chlorinates considerably more effectively than the previous system (dosing with calcium hypochlorite), and that has a lower amortized operating cost.

Upon the recommendation of its Technical Committee, The Com-pressed Air Society has adopted the following definitions of, certain terms. Displacement.-The displacement of an air compressor is the volume displaced by the net area of the compressor piston. Capacity.-The capacity should be expressed in cubic feet per minute, and is the actual amount of air compressed and delivered, expressed in terms of free air at intake temperature and at the pressure of dry air at the suction. Volumetric Efficiency.-Volumetric efficiency is the ratio of the capacity to the displacement of the compressor, all as defined above. Compression Efficiency.-Compression efficiency is the ratio of the work required to compress isothermally all the air delivered by an air compressor to the work actually clone within the compressor cylinder, as shown by indicator cards, and may he expressed is the product of the volumetric efficiency (the intake pressure and the hyperbolic logarithm of the ratio of compression), all divided by the indicated mean effective pressure within the air cylinder or cylinders.

Ion flotation is a process in which ions of interest are complexed with a suitable surfactant molecule. A dilute solution containing these complexes is then aerated, under which circumstance the surface-active complex concentrates at the air-water interface and is transferred to a froth. The present work describes some of the phenomenology of this process and experimental work leading up to the design and use of a pilot scale laboratory facility. Early experiments suggest that selective recovery of gold can be obtained in a manner at least equivalent to conventional CIP processing at low capital cost. Under favourable conditions, upgrade ratios of gold ions of the order of 180: l have been achieved from reclaimed residue dam water with as low an initial gold level as 0.2ppm. Successful development of countercurrent ion flotation for concentrating solids-free gold solutions may offer a lower cost alternative to existing gold ore processing technologies, or in more secondary applications such as concentrating dilute gold solutions or heap leach runoff. The technology may also have more generalised applications to other heavy metal processing.

The use of gravity concentration as a means of recovering the 'free' gold component from alluvial and milled ore products is widely used and is receiving increasing attention, particularly with the introduction of the centrifugal-type concentrating units. Because of ever-increasing mining and processing costs and a decline in the gold price, it has become important that the recov­ery efficiency from concentrates is improved so as to increase the yield of bankable gold from this primary recovery step. This paper outlines an alternative hydrometallurgical approach aimed at achieving overall gold recoveries in excess of 98%, together with the elimination of any secondary residue streams which, in the case of conventional treatment methods, require re-processing. An adaptation to the Minataur™ Process technology is being applied with the proposed method, incorpo­rating the pre-treatment of the concentrate, oxidative leaching of the pre-treatment residue, followed by precipitation of a high­purity gold. This route is seen to have application in all scales of operation. Selected results from laboratory-scale testwork are presented to highlight the discussion.

By use of a functional model of capital expenditure developed earlier, a prototype cash-flow model is formulated as a basis for the investigation of the economic consequences when the production rate of a mine is manipulated as fundamental design variable. The optimum production capacities that maximize the common economic criteria of net present value, present-value ratio, and wealth growth rate are determined. It is shown that these choices depend certain key groupings of the economic parameters, and that they have a fixed interrelationship. The basic cash-flow model is extended further to include the effects of a constrained rate of production buildup and the imposition of State taxation on generated income. An approximation to the initial tax-free period of a new mining venture is developed, and, by use of these results, the optimum choice of production level is analysed when both the buildup rate is constrained and tax is imposed. This extended model permits a comparison between the performance of existing mines and the predicted theoretical production levels for these mines.
