U.S. Borax has two tailings disposal requirements which are uniquely different in many respects, but with the common goal to minimize the impact on the environment, utilize dependable technology and minimize the economic impact. The existing borax mine in the grid Mojave desert of Southern California has gone through a series of changes in tailings disposal practices in the 56 years of operations, The other tailings disposal requirement is a new molybdenum mine, presently in the feasibility phase, in the high precipitation setting of Southeast Alaska. The leaching behavior of rhenium in ammonium iodide solutions with iodine as oxidant has been studied. Experiments were carried out in an autoclave. The effect of stirring speed, temperature, pH of the solution, iodine and iodide concentrations on the dissolution of rhenium was investigated. It was found that high temperature and high pH of the solutions were essential for the efficient leaching of rhenium. The dissolution rate was found to be dependent upon the concentration of iodine and iodide. It was concluded that the dissolution of rhenium under the conditions studied was controlled by mass transfer of iodine with an apparent activation energy of 15.77 kJ/mole.

The world's population by 2000 A. D. may approximate 6.5 billion and the United States' 304 million. South Asian population increases between 1970 and 2000 A. D. will be triple the projected population of North America. Such anticipated dramatic and probably traumatic increases in world population yield grave concern for the standard of living in the world and the United States. The people of the United States currently consume 32 percent of the world's energy and similarly large percentages of the world's mineral raw materials. With only 6 percent of the present world's population and slightly smaller percentage by 2000 A. D., much expanded world-wide production of energy and raw materials will be required to maintain even a standstill living standard. A minimal 2 percent increase per year in the standard of living in the United States and a 4 percent increase elsewhere in the world, beyond the demands of the estimated population increases, suggest the magnitude of the increased need for energy-mineral raw materials and the possible crises the world will face in these areas by 2000 A. D. Mineral engineers and scientists with broad educational backgrounds will be required in greatly increased numbers to help alleviate, and possibly avert, expected energy-mineral raw materials shortages of the next millenium. Explorationists, mineral engineers, commodity economists, environmentalists, city, county, state, and federal mineral materials planners and coordinators, and metallurgists will be among those most needed. AIME membership in the second century of the Institute's history will contribute directly to this personnel pool.

The recovery of uranium from wet process phosphoric acid was applied on industrial scale in the 1940's by using octylpyrophosphoric acid as an extractant. Later, more efficient reagents were used, e.g., di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid and actylphenyl phosphoric acid. In the 1970's the rare earths in Kola phosphate were recovered in Finland and recently (1997) in Norway using HNO, as a leaching agent and di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid as solvent. It was demonstrated later on laboratory scale that both uranium and rare earths could be extracted from the rock by tributyl phosphate but at different pH values provided that the rock is leached with nitric or hydrochloric acids instead of the commonly used sulfuric. This new concept opens the way to the possibility of treating phosphate rock by in-situ, dump, or vat leaching for the recovery of phosphate values as well as uranium and the rare earths. Another solvent extraction process is used industrially for the purification of phosphoric acid using butyl and amyl alcohols.

The electrochemical oxidation of chalcopyrite in the absence of-a chemical oxidant was studied in ammonia/ammonium sulfate solutions by anodically polarizing electrodes prepared from massive chalcopyrite. The effects of pH, cupric and ammonia ion concentration were systematically evaluated. Kinetic parameters were obtained from the anodic charge-transfer regions of the anodic polarization curves. Increasing ammonia and hydroxyl ion concentrations increased the rate of oxidation. A mechanism is proposed which explains the first order dependence of (NH3) and (OR) associated with a single electron transfer process. An empirical relationship which accurately describes the dependence of the rest potential (i.e. zero current potential) on solution composition is also given.

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) constitute a majorpart of electrical and electronic equipment containing valuable metals such as Cu, Ni, Au, Ag, Pd, Fe, Sn, Pb, etc. The concentration of base and precious metals in PCBs is observed to be several times more than those in their respective ores. Therefore, the recycling of PCBs is necessary to recover the valuable materials. However, the ultrafine particles pose a big challenge. Removal of them is suggested prior to processing by flotation. Froth flotation is observed to be a promising technique for rejecting the plastics from the comminution product. In the present work, enrichment of ground 1.0 mm PCB powder was investigated through flotation route by varying the operating variables such as frother dosage, pulp density, air flow rate and rotational speed of the impeller. The liberation studies indicate that excellent liberation of metal values is achieved from the non-metallic constituents at -1.0 mm size and below. The particulate system is quite rich in metal value with about 23% total metal content. The non-metallic constituents such as plastics are observed to possess strong hydrophobicity while the metal particles in the pulverized mass are hydrophilic in nature. Froth flotation kinetics is studied in depth with a view to facilitate high rejection of plastics and identify optimum operating conditions for the same. A number of experiments are performed to establish the influence of the operating variables on flotation performance. The conditions for achieving higher yield of the metal-rich fraction with respect to a specified grade are discussed in the light of the experimental results. It is found that the requirement of reagents is negligible which could be a very important factor from the commercial stand point. Single-stage flotation increases the metal content from 23% to over 32% with a mass yield of around 75% and over 90% recovery of metal values. 32% of the materials in the feed could be effectively rejected in the float fraction losing less than 4% metal values. The dependence of kinetics on the process variables is also discussed. It was concluded that a high rotor speed helps in efficiently rejecting the plastics. Frother should be added to help stabilize the froth and enhance the kinetics. A moderate air flow is required while pulp density must be kept low for efficient pre-concentration. It is established that the entire -1.0 mm comminution product could be treated by flotation for generating a pre-concentrate. Production of chromite in California has been from many small, high-grade mines. The opening of the Purchase Depot at Grants Pass, Oreg., in 1951 has stimulated chromite mining in California, and a large number of properties are being reexamined as there is a possibility that some low-grade ores from many of these properties can be beneficiated to meet the purchasing schedule. The Bureau of Mines in its program of conservation is continuing ore-dressing tests on chromite ores to better evaluate their potential. This report is a compilation of preliminary concentration tests on samples from five different properties in California. The concentration tests were made on ores from the David mine, Butte County, the Seiad Creek mine, Siskiyou County, the High Plateau mine, Del Norte County, Bud's mine, Tuolumne County, and tailings from the Miller concentration plant in San Luis Obispo County, Calif., to determine the possibility of beneficiating these ores so that they will meet the specifications for the Government stockpile.

THE approximate status of education in ore dressing in 1871 is reflected by Rossiter W. Raymond in an article written at that time presenting the curricula and descriptions of the laboratories at the various mining schools in the United States. For the most part, the curricula in which ore dressing was taught were for mining engineering. They comprised courses in geology, mining, and pyrometallurgy about equal in point or credit weights; a short course in ore dressing, and a somewhat longer course in assaying; and courses in surveying, hydraulics, power, and strength of materials-all superimposed on a broad foundation of physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Some curricula contained a fair content of the humanities. Then, as now, the emphasis on fundamentals was greater in the older colleges and universities. The report on the Columbia School of Mines, then relatively young, emphasized that a large percentage of its students were college graduates. RAPID progress has been made in the automatic control of open-hearth furnaces in the past few years and many firms today\supply such control apparatus. It is somewhat surprising that so little was heard about open-hearth control up to about, 1928, and that thereafter the practice of automatically controlling open-hearth furnaces spread very rapidly. Before discussing the reasons for this it may be advisable to list the quantities that can be controlled. One of the easiest quantities to be controlled in the open-hearth furnace is pressure. The reasons for controlling it are plain. If there is excess pressure in the furnace, products of combustion leak out around .the .door and through all the cracks in the brick-work. The stability of the piers between the doors is seriously endangered, and front wall repairs become frequent. Furthermore, hot gases are lost that might be usefully employed in heating the checkerwork. If there is a slight vacuum in the furnace, cold air entering through the doors and cracks cools the interior, slowing down the reactions and making it impossible to secure the highest degree of preheat from the checkerwork.

The principle underlying the operation was not a new one, but the experimental work started at that time was the first that was carried through to a logical conclusion, followed by construction and operation of a pilot plant, and then full-scale production. For a short working definition, flash roasting may he considered the instantaneous and complete oxidation of finely ground sulphide particles, partially suspended in air or gas, the oxidation reaction evolving enough heat to make the reaction self-sustaining, or nearly so.

FROM the viewpoint of the oil producer, the oil refiner, the oil marketer, and the investor, in oil securities, a brief picture of the crude oil supply and demand in the present critical season of the year will be timely and interesting. Although crude oil production has been in a comparatively poor statistical position this year, increased sales and sustained refinery and crude oil prices have allowed increased profits for many oil companies. The large amount of crude oil going into storage during the present period of peak consumption, just previous to the major yearly fall decline in consumption, has caused oil producers to make plans to leave the oil in the ground for the present in several of the areas of large flush production. The present moment is looked on as the turning point in the current year.

AUSTRALIANS and New Zealanders, whose countries have respectively yielded gold to the value of £666,000,000 and £96,000,000, are taking full advantage of the current high prices for that metal. There is a marked activity in ordinary prospecting, geophysical exploration, further development of working mines and reopening of old properties, formation of new companies, installation of new equipment and processes, and expansion of operations generally. Australian gold production last year was approximately double the quantity of 1929 and its value three times as great, 1929 being the low of recent years. The 1933 production was about 821,000 oz. From New Zealand, 165,000 oz. was exported last year. Papua and New Guinea contributed slightly over 100,000 oz. What the future price of gold will be nobody knows, but, even if it returns to the former level, Australian producers are almost sure of 110 shillings an ounce until 1940 through the Commonwealth Government's Gold Bounty Act, at present temporarily and necessarily suspended from operation.

The University of Alabama Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) has developed a unique process for selective fatty acid flotation of carbonate gangue from sedimentary apatites (francolite) in the pH range of 4-6, without collector conditioning of the pulp. The process, which does not require an apatite depressant, was modified to beneficiate a high MgO siliceous phosphate matrix from South Florida. The modified process includes two flotation stages, one for carbonate removal, as mentioned above, and the other for phosphate recovery from the siliceous gangue. The selective flotation separation of the carbonate and phosphate from siliceous constituents of the matrix at various pH levels and collector dosages are discussed. In the carbonate flotation stage, about 70% of the MgO was rejected in the froth, and the phosphate flotation stage produced concentrates analyzing about 31% P20S' 0.7% MgO and 4% acid insolubles. The overall P20S recovery in the two stages is about 85%.

O presente trabalho avaliou a capacidade de degradação bacteriana de cianeto da cepa Bacillus pumilus em efluentes contaminados. Para isso foram realizados estudos de degradação bacteriana de cianeto em frascos agitados e incubados em agitador orbital durante 120 horas. Os ensaios aconteceram em três etapas; a primeira etapa consistiu na ativação e crescimento da bactéria em meio Luria Bertani, seguida da adaptação a ambientes alcalinos e por ultimo a etapa de degradação de cianeto. A proporção de inoculo foi de 1:500. Utilizou-se tampão CAPS para manter o pH alcalino. Para avaliação da degradação de cianeto foi preparada uma solução sintética contendo 500mgL-1 de cianeto de potássio pH 10. Foi avaliada a influencia da temperatura na degradação bacteriana (27, 32 e 37oC). O controle do crescimento celular foi realizado por medidas de densidade óptica com comprimento de onda ?=600nm. A quantificação do cianeto livre foi realziada por polarografia utilizando-se o analisador voltamétrico (computrace control 797 Metrohm). Dos resultados obtidos foi possível determinar que a cepa B. pumilus obteve melhor desempenho na degradação de cianeto a temperatura de 27oC conseguindo degradar 100% do cianeto livre presente na solução. O tempo empregado para a degradação total do cianeto foi de 3 dias.

Mill power models have been used in a variety of ways in industrial practice since power directly equates to throughput and fineness of ground product. We first start with Hogg-Fuerstenau Power Model and show how this model successfully predicted the power draw of many grinding mills in several mining operations. Then, we show how this model was on the verge of being able to predict the influence of lifter design on power draw. Next, we describe the discrete element model and how it overcame the issues faced by the previous power model. Using a DEM software known as Millsoft, we show the influence of lifter design geometry on power draw and analyze the power draw of rubber lifters versus the steel lifters via several case studies. As years passed, the two-dimensional discrete element model imbedded in Millsoft is superseded by three-dimensional discrete element method. Due to the gigantic computational power of graphic processing units, new computational codes that can do the tumbling motion along the entire length of the mill has come about. Here, we show the predictive capability of Blaze-DEM for ball and SAG mills.

Concerning production of low phosphorus steel critical grades at ArcelorMittal Tubarão site, bottom blowing system plays a very important role. For those systems with independently controlled tuyeres, some non-uniform bottom blowing patterns seem to be promising in improving metal-slag mixing; however, based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results of ArcelorMittal Tubarão’s post oxygen bottom blowing, this may not be generalized. Also, from industrial trials it became clear that higher the bottom blowing flow rate, the closer were the end point P to the equilibrium. Despite this result an analysis of the apparent mass transfer coefficient has shown a week correlation with the classical power stir correlation suggesting a more complex kinetic limiting step for phosphorus removal.

A sampling campaign carried out on the lead flotation circuit at Lakan lead-zinc processing plant demonstrated that the Pb recovery was only about 68-69%. Characterization of the Pb flotation tailing showed that 61.4% of the Pb is in the –37 μm size fraction, which is difficult to recover by flotation. Batch flotation experiments were carried out on a plant sample of the lead flotation feed and high-intensity conditioning (HIC) was used to improve flotation recovery. The results showed that increasing the collector conditioning time from 1 to 3 minutes significantly increases the Pb recovery from 42.5% to 57.3%. Further increases in conditioning time to 5 to 7 minutes decreased the Pb recovery. With a collector conditioning time of more than 3 minutes, due to the surface cleaning effect, increasing collector and frother dosage improved the flotation selectivity and recovery, even at higher collector dosages. The Pb recovery increased from 69.1% to 79.8% with increasing impeller speed from 600 to 1250 r/min. HIC increases the flotation kinetics and greatly improves the flotation recovery and concentrate grade.

If there is a single key to managing a mineral extraction company, it is the control of productivity. American labor costs, in general, tend to be in the range of 10%-15% of total costs. American coal mining labor costs, however, exhibit ranges of 30%-60% of total costs. Is it any wonder that the industry finds itself at a competitive disadvantage? When labor costs take as much as sixty cents of every dollar of revenue, there is little room for profitability. The American coal mining industry must set as a long range goal the reduction of labor costs to the 10%-15% range of total costs in order to be competitive.

In order to maximally remove the harmful impurities phosphorus and reduce the loss of valuable elements from Si-based alloy for production of solar-grade silicon, thermodynamic properties of the Si-based alloy were studied. In this work a new model, the Molecular Interaction Volume Model (MIVM) derived from statistical thermodynamics, was successfully used in the Si-based and Si-Fe-based alloy. The calculation started from binary Si-Fe, Si-P and Fe-P systems, then the thermodynamic parameters of ternary systems could be derived based sub-binary systems. Using the activity coefficients of the elements in the Si-based alloys and the saturated vapor pressure of the pure substance of the components, mass fraction of P during vapor-liquid equilibrium can be calculated. The calculated thermodynamic parameters were compared with experimental data available in different publications, and it is found that the thermodynamic parameters calculated using MIVM model are in good agreement with the measured results. The calculated result shows that the mass fraction of phosphorus during vapor-liquid equilibrium of Si-Fe-P melt increases with the increasing phosphorus content and decreasing temperature. This is an important direction for experimental practice in vacuum or low-pressure EML refining of ferrosilicon for potential production of solar-grade silicon without significant vaporization loss of valuable element.
