Ferric chloride leaching w.as applied to a complex sulfide ore from Tok, Alaska to dissolve zinc, lead, silver and copper. Gold in the leaching residue, as well as in the ore, is found to be refractory to the conventional cyanidation process. Roasting, pressure oxidation and elemental sulfur removal followed by cyanidation were tested to improve gold dissolution. Also tested were thiourea leaching and high-pressure cyanidation. The readsorption of dissolved gold by carbonaceous matter in the chloride leaching residue was analyzed. Based on the experimental results, factors causing difficulty of gold dissolution from the leaching residue are discussed.

Recent studies ** at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines have revealed some interesting facts as to the probable behavior of steamed coke in the blast furnace . The literature on the chemistry of the blast furnace was tho roughly reviewed , and with this information in mind , the probable behavior of the coke sulphur in the blast furnace was deduced . Enough small - scale tests were conducted to furnish a check on most of the important deductions , and the conclusions derived therefrom accord with what is already known in regard to the forms of sulphur in coke , and fit in well with the general opinion concerning blast-furnace reactions .

Sodium-aluminum and potassium-aluminum silicates are among the more important rock-forming minerals of the earth's crust. They also appear as constituents of some metallurgical slags and of some refractory materials. Consequently, knowledge of their thermodynamic properties is interesting and valuable from several viewpoints. This paper reports experimental determinations of the low-temperature heat capacities and entropies at 298.16° K. of albite, jadeite, and nephelite it the sodium-aluminum silicate series and of adularia, ferriferous orthoclase, leucite and kaliophilite in the potassium-aluminum silicate series. Also high-temperature heat-content and entropy increments about 298.16° K. are reported for albite, jadeite, nephelite, and carnegieite in the sodium-aluminum silicate series. Except for a few high-temperature heat-content values for albite, all these data are available for the first time.

Dynamic measurements of Young's modulus have been made for poly crystalline Ni-W alloys from room temperature to 800°C. The alloys studied range in composition from pure nickel to Ni-10 at. pct W. The results indicate that Young's modulus decreases linearly with temperature above the Curie temperature. The rate of change of Young's Modulus with temperature mas found to range from 104 psi per "C for pure nickel to 0.82 x 104 psi per °C for Mi-10 pct W. At all temperatures the elastic modulus decreases with increcrsing tungsten content up to 1 at. pct W, and increases as the tungsten content is increased above that level. Young's modulus decreases slightly as the carbon content is increased from 0.002 to 0.09 wt pct C THE knowledge of the elastic modulus of metals and alloys is important for a number of reasons. The first and most obvious reason comes from the need to predict elastic deflections under given loading conditions. A second and somewhat more subtle reason comes from the fact that the elastic properties of an alloy must be known before a proper account of the mechanisms of plastic deformation can be made. This is especially true for high-temperature creep of crystalline solids. Sherby and his coworkers have shown that the high-temperature steady-state creep rates of crystalline solids are inversely related to the elastic modulus1,2 and that the temperature dependence of the elastic modulus must be taken into account if reliable determinations of the activation energy for creep are to be made. In addition, measurements of the elastic constants of solid solutions are needed to allow one to assess the modulus interaction contribution to solid-solution Strengthening.3-5 Pelloux and Grant6 have demonstrated that substantial solid-solution strengthening at room temperature and elevated temperatures occurs when refractory metal solute atoms are added to nickel. While the high-temperature elastic properties of pure nickel have been measured by a number of authors,7-10 the elastic properties of nickel-based refractory metal alloys have not been determined. The purpose of this paper is to report on measurements of Young's modulus of polycrystalline Ni-W alloys at elevated temperatures. It is expected that these measurements will be valuable to studies of the mechanical properties of nickel-based refractory metal solid solutions. I) EXPERIMENTAL Young's moduli of polycrystalline samples were determined by a dynamic method in order to reduce high- temperature anelastic and plastic relaxations. The samples were forced in transverse free-free vibration; that is, both ends of the sample were unrestrained and the vibration was transverse to the long axis. The fundamental resonant frequency was determined by the Forster method.11 The analysis of this type of vibration which was formulated by Rayleigh,12 Timo-chenko,13 and pickett,14 and reviewed by Fine," leads where fn is the resonant frequency of the nth mode, r is the radius of the circular cross section. L is the specimen length, ßn is 1.5056 for free-free vibration in the fundamental mode of vibration, 6 is the mass density, and E is Young's modulus in the axial direction. This equation can be transformed into: E = 9.17605 x 10-6(L/D)E/Lf2 [2] where E is Young's modulus in psi, L is the length in inches, d is the diameter in inches, W is the weight in grams, and f is the resonance frequency in cps. Eq. [2] was further modified in order to take account of the thermal expansion of the samples. The resulting correct term is: where the thermal expansion coefficients for nickel and tungsten, respectively. Xw is the atom fraction of tungsten in the sample and T is the temperature in "C. The treatment of the thermal expansion coefficient as a linear function of composition seems sufficiently accurate since an error of 25 pct in the expansion coefficient will result in only a 0.3 pct error in the modulus at 1000°C. A) Apparatus. The equipment for this investigation has been described by Lytton et al.16 Several modifications of the equipment have been made. The most significant change involved replacing the detector crystal transducer with a magnetic transducer. A phonographic magnetic transducer was employed as a sensing device since the contact pressure necessary to produce a stable signal is much less than that for a crystal transducer. This magnetic transducer is also not affected by conditions of high temperature and vacuum which are present in these experiments. The vacuum was 10-5 torr at room temperature and about 5 x 10-4 torr at 900°C. This was sufficient to prevent surface contamination of the samples during the tests. Until recent years the term "whiting" was applied exclusively to the water-ground chalks of certain north European countries. In many industries these are still considered superior to the whiting made from domestic limestone and marble. However, the latter material has replaced much of the European whiting in the American market, largely due to improvements in grinding and classification by American manufacturers.4 To encourage the domestic industry, the Bureau of Mines in 1931 undertook a study of the preparation of whiting from American raw materials and a comparison of the finished products with European whitings.

WET processes for the extraction of copper from its ores have of late attracted much attention, especially in Europe, where the use of oupriferous iron-pyrites as a' source of sulphur prevails. These processes present an additional interest, when, as is often the case, the copper-ore's to be treated contain one or both of the precious metals, since the complete separation of these from copper, either in the dry or the moist way, is, as is well known, one of the difficult problems of metallurgy. The principal wet processes hitherto in use for the extraction of copper from its ores, may be included under three classes : I. Those in which the copper in snlphuretted ores is rendered soluble in water by calcining them, after a preliminary roasting which removes the greater part of their sulphur, with a portion of common salt, by which the copper is converted into a chloride (Long-maid and Henderson), or with sulphate of soda, by which sulphate of copper is formed (Monnier). Allied to these is the method by which a portion of the copper is got as soluble sulphate by roasting without addition, a process which is sometimes modified and rendered more complete by re-roasting the lixiviated residues with the addition of a portion of raw sulphuretted ore (Bankart). II. Those methods in which free chlorhydric or sulphuric acid is used to dissolve the copper- from oxidized or roasted ores. These, while simple and efficient, are too costly, except in certain localities where chlorhydric acid is a waste product. Related to them is the plan which consists in exposing the oxidized and moistened ores to the slow action of sulphurous acid mixed with air, by which a soluble sulphate of copper is formed. It has been proposed to decompose the solutions of sulphate or chloride of copper by sulphuretted hydrogen, thus separating the copper as sulphide, and using the liberated acid to dissolve fresh portions of oxidized copper. It is, however, the almost universal practice to throw down the copper from its solutions, however obtained, in the metallic state by the use of iron, either scrap-iron or iron-sponge; although in some instances

This report describes the carbonizing properties of coals from the principal beds in Cambria County, Pa. Samples of coals from Upper and Lower Freeport and Upper and Lower Kittanning beds having estimated minable reserves of 50-million tons or more were studied by the Bureau of Mines. Cambria County coals rank either as medium-or low-volatile bituminous. A preparation study indicated that all coals tested in this county, except one sample from the Lower Freeport bed, were responsive to cleaning and would yield a product with satisfactory chemical properties for metallurgical coal. All coals tested from Cambria County yielded strong coke; however, they expand excessively when carbonized singly, and should be used only as minor constituents in metallurgical coking blends when carbonized in slot-type ovens.

Percussion drilling dates back to the hand operated star drill and hammer. Eventually steam and compressed air were substituted for muscle power and the mechanical percussion drill was born. From the hand held jack hammers, driving a forged steel bit into the rock, there evolved the jack leg, the rubber tired and crawler mounted drill carrier with automatic feed, increasing power and reducing man?s muscle requirements. Because the reaction of a blow on one end of a piece of steel has to be transmitted to the other end there is a limit to the depth or length of drill steel that can economically be used in out of the hole percussion devices. During the late 1800?s there is evidence that designers were attempting to put the percussion tool at the bottom of the hole, directly on the bit, in order to avoid the long drill steel which absorbed much of the blow, leaving little to be applied to the bit and the rock being drilled.

The presence in the Cripple Creek district, Colo., of irrespirable gas or gases, generally known to consist mainly of nitrogen and carbon dioxide, has been recognized by members of the mining industry in that region almost since underground mining was begun there; the occurrence, origin, and possible control of these gases have been discussed in several articles cited at various places in this report. Similar gases have also been studied in other metal-mining districts, as later discussed. In March, 1925, there were two fatalities from rock-strata gases in the shaft of the Index mine, near Cripple Creek. Two men repairing the bell or signal line preparatory to reopening the shaft were lowered into irrespirable gases and died. Their bodies were recovered by rescue crews from the United States Bureau of Mines and .the Portland mine, Victor, Colo. These crews found it necessary to use oxygen breathing apparatus. In October of the same year a miner was trapped on the 6 level of the Midget mine by an influx of gases that filled the shaft to a point above that where he was working. Oxygen breathing apparatus was again used by Bureau of Mines employees, who were in the vicinity, and the man was brought out in time to save his life. These two fatalities and one near fatality seemed to show that additional investigation of the gases and methods of control might be warranted. Accordingly, field and laboratory studies were begun by the authors of this report after a visit to the district by M. van Siclen, then engineer in charge, mining research division, Bureau of Mines, and after conferences with the Mine Owners' Association of Cripple Creek and with J. T. Joyce, metal-mine commissioner of the State of Colorado. The mine operators of the Cripple Creek district and the State mine commissioner's office gave whole-hearted cooperation in this work.

Gold leaching of an auriferous pyrite ore from the Portovelo deposit in Ecuador indicates that noncyanide leaching systems, such as thiocyanate and thiourea, are not as effective as the traditional cyanide system. For example, whereas approximately 95% of the gold can be leached from the ore with cyanide, only about 50% gold dissolution can be achieved with a thiocyanate leaching system. Electrochemical measurements indicate that gold is not cathodically protected by pyrite in these systems. Based on the results of preliminary diagnostic experiments, it appears that gold dissolution in thiocyanate and thiourea systems is limited by passivation due to the formation of either elemental sulfur or sulfur compounds on the gold surface.

Process modeling software is used extensively in process engineering, but there is a notable lack of affordable software for educational uses. This paper describes two educationally oriented software programs for thermochemical modeling of processes involving metals, minerals, and ceramic materials. Both programs run as Excel@ spreadsheet files. The first is FREED, a thermodynamic database program containing datafiles for 2500 species. It contains the entire U. S. Bureau of Mines and most of the U. S. Geological Survey database, plus data for scores of other species drawn from various sources. Several modules are available for manipulating and viewing the data. The second program is THERBAL, for making thermodynamic calculations using FREED data. Equilibrium calculations can be made for systems with non-ideal solutions, for a specified set of pressure, temperature, and input amounts of reactants. An optional heat balance is also calculated. The results are displayed as tables or charts in Excel worksheets. Examples of the use of THERBAL will be given for the reforming of natural gas for DRI production, DRI production, and EAF steelmaking. Some observations will be made on its use in the classroom. The development of FREED and THERBAL was initially carried out at the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, University of Missouri - Rolla as part of a project to preserve and enhance the Bureau of Mines database. The current versions were developed privately by the authors.

The Bureau of Mines has developed an effective hydrometallurgical method to recover high-purity Pb metal and elemental S from concentrates. This low-temperature process eliminates S gases and Pb emissions, in contrast to the current high-temperature smelting technology. The method consists of (1) oxidative leaching with H202, Pb02, and waste fluosilicic acid at 95° C to produce a solution of PbSiF6 and a residue containing elemental S, (2) electrowinning the PbSiF6 solution at 35° C to produce 99.99 pct Pb metal and H2SiF6, and (3) solvent extraction to recover S, leaving a residue containing Cu, Ag, and other metal values. Spent electrolyte was recycled repeatedly, with impurity buildup controlled by controlling the leach parameters.

"Stable coal radicals (SCRs) were detected by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy in the lung tissue of autopsied coal miners. The SCR concentrations were measured in the lung tissues from 98 coal miners with and without (a) coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), (b) cancer, and (c) a history of cigarette smoking. Concentrations of SCRs were also determined in the lungs of nonminer controls. The SCR concentration was related to longer mining tenure, CWP disease severity, lung cancer, and cigarette smoking. The mean concentration of SCRs in the lung tissues of miners with 30 ± 1.4 y of coal mining exposure was 5.3 ± 1.3 x 10"" spins/g versus controls who had a nondetec¬table level (< 10 15 spins/g). An increase in disease severity was accompanied by a progressive increase in SCR concentration. A SCR concentration of 4.8 ± 0.7 x 10"" spins/g was found for simple CWP (with moderate coal macules) versus 7.8 ± 4.6 spins/g lung tissue for complicated CWP (with progressive massive fibrosis). Significantly higher (i.e., 10 x 10"") concentrations of SCR in the coal miners' lung tissues were associated with an exposure history in the anthracite regions of northeastern Pennsylvania. These results in¬dicate a possible role for SCRs in the disease process. Furthermore, ESR appears to be an adequate methodology for the quantitation of coal dust retained in the lung and for distinguishing exposures to anthracite and/or bituminous coal.THE PREVALENCE AND SEVERITY of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) differ markedly between geographic locations, mines, and coal fields irrespective of comparable levels of exposure to coal mine dust These differences cannot be fully explained by the presence of silica and other minerals in the coal mine dust.' Rank of coal is also an important factor in the pathogenesis of CWP. Equally important is that the prevalence of CWP decreases from east to west in the United States,' and South Wales miners develop more severe CWP than miners in Scotland.' However, there are conflicting reports that cast uncertainty on the influence of rank of coal in the development of CWP."" These problems are complicated but will be solved as new technology emerges and as more is learned about the disease process."

"This circular is part III of a series of papers reviewing the literature on air conditioning in mines, with particular reference to the health, safety, and efficiency of miners.4/ It deals with theoretical and practical methods of conditioning air in mines to correct or alleviate the health hazards described in parts I and II and discusses the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various-parts of the world.The principal conditions to be corrected or alleviated are the chemical qualities of mine air (especially when contaminated with toxic and noxious gases and dusts) and the physical qualities (abnormal mine temperatures and humidities) that emanate from various sources in underground workings. Air motion and barometric pressure are physical qualities also to be considered.From the standpoint of health, knowledge of the composition of the air, or atmosphere, in mines and other underground operations is of prime importance. Suitable control measures or plans of procedure to combat or eliminate the hazards from contaminants must be based upon accurate information obtained by the selection and use of proper methods of sampling and analyzing mine atmospheres (1).5/Conditioning air is one of the most essential factors to be considered in any underground workings, not only from the standpoint of health and safety but also with regard to efficiency and productivity. Without modern air-conditioning, the war's great demand upon the copper mines could hardly have been met, as the mechanical refrigeration cooled off sweltering holes in less than a month, whereas in the past it was standard practice to blow air through the tunnels for 3 years or so until they were cooled.This paper discusses methods of determining the chemical and physical qualities of mine air and their control. In mine site revegetation, exotic grasses are more commonly used than native grasses. This is due to unavailability of native grass seed on a commerical scale and lack of information on agronomical aspects of native grasses. This paper lists a number of native grass species that have the potential to grow well on mine sites, and provides some information on their seed collection, processing and germination. Further, it demonstrates via results of a field trial conducted at Ranger Mine spoil the relative performance of ten native grasses and Rhodes grass. It is concluded that (i) some native grasses have similar ability to grow on mine spoils compared to Rhodes grass and (ii) the use of native grasses have added advantages in ecosystem restoration.

It was hypothesized that solid-state point defects should alter the flotation properties of solids. Tests conducted on pure AgCl and AgCl doped with CdC12 show that atomic point defects exhibit an important role in the floatability of AgC1. Tests conducted on PbS doped with Ag2s or Bi2S3, also show that the defect structures resulting from these dope additions, i.e., a combination of electronic and atomic point defects, contribute significantly to the flotation of PbS. IT has been established that flotation occurs only when a finite contact angle exists between a solid and a gaseous bubble.&apos; This angle, measured through the liquid phase, is expressed by the equation where the are inter facial free energies and the subscripts S, G, and L represent solid, gas, and liquid phases, respectively. As is seen in Eq. [I] three interface free energies, sG, sl, and GL, enter into the contact angle equation. Therefore, any variation in these energies which sufficiently varies the contact angle will, in turn, vary flotation processes. Changes made in any of the phases concerned, i.e., gas, liquid, or solid phase, are reflected through the changes occurring in two of the surface energy terms. Thus, a change in the liquid composition would be noted in sL and GL, and it is this phase, the liquid, which is most frequently altered in flotation studies., Changes in the solid phase must be reflected through the changes occurring in the sG and sL terms. In particular, it is hypothesized that changes in the surface concentrations of point defects in the solid-phase will alter the sG and sL terms which, in turn, will be reflected by flotation results. As an illustration of this hypothesis one may consider the defect structure and the flotation of AgC1. The bulk defect structure of AgCl is essentially one involving equal number of cation vacancies and interstitial cations.3 Upon adding CdC1, to AgC1, a greater number of silver ion vacancies are created in the bulk of the crystal.4 On the surface of the crystal the smaller binding forces and the free space accomodations may also allow for the creation of "surface interstitial anions", which will be designated as ad-anions. Thus, the point defect structure of the surface of AgCl doped with CdCl, will consist of cation vacancies and/or adanions. If the molecular forces responsible for the surface energies, ?SG and ?sL, are significantly altered by the presence of these surface point defects, then differences in flotation results will be noted as the concentration of these defects is varied. The defects present in AgCl are predominantly atomic in nature. In the case of PbS both electronic and atomic defects are present.5 This compound conducts electrically by either electrons or electron holes depending upon whether excess lead or excess sulfur is present. Upon disolving BiS3 in stoichio-metric PbS, one increases the concentration of cation vacancies and the number of electron carriers in the bulk of the crystal.5" At the surface, the possibility of ad-anions must also be considered. Conversely, upon dissolving AgS in stoichiometric PbS one increases the concentration of interstitial cations and the number of electronhole carriers in the bulk of the crystal.5,6&apos; At the surface the interstitial cations will be designated as ad-cations. Thus, the point defect structure of the surface of a PbS crystal doped with Bi2S3 will consist of a number of cation vacancies and/or ad-anions and an excess of electrons. Conversely the point defects on the surface of a PbS crystal doped with Ag2S will consist of a number of ad-cations and an excess of electron holes. Again, as in the case of AgC1, should the molecular forces responsible for the magnitude of the interface free energies, ?sG and ?sL, be significantly altered by the presence of these surface defects then significant differences in flotation results will be noted as the concentration of these defects is varied. EXPERIMENTAL To test this hypothesis flotation tests were conducted on pure and doped AgCl and on PbS doped with either Bi2S3 or Ag2S. Preparation of the AgCl samples was performed as follows: AgCl and weighed amounts of CdC1, were melted in a porcelain crucible. The melt was then forced through a capillary tube and the particles emitted solidified in air as they fell about 1.5 meters. In the study of the sintering of meta powders, we have come to the conclusion in this laboratory that further progress requires a more basic understanding of the operating mechanisms. This is emphasized in detail by Shaler. He has shown that a knowledge of the exact value of the surface tension is imperative for a solution of the kinetics of sintering. This force plays a principal role in causing the density of compacts to increase.2 Furthermore, a knowledge of the surface tension of solids is also applicable to other aspects of physical metallurgy. C. S. Smith3 points out the relation between surface and interfacial tension and their function in determining the microstructure and resulting properties of polycrystal-line and polyphase alloys. This paper describes one group of results of an experimental program designed for the study of the surface tension in solid metals. As a by-product of this work, considerable information has been obtained on the rate and nature of the flow of a metal at temperatures approaching the melting point and under extremely low stresses, a field of mechanical behavior heretofore scarcely touched by metallurgists. The importance of this additional information to students of powder metallurgy need not be stressed. Theoretical Considerations Interfacial tension arises from the condition that an excess of energy exists at the interface between two phases. Gibbs proves that this energy is a partial function of the interfacial area; thus: ?F/?s = ? where ?F/?s is the rate of change of free energy of the system with changing surface area, at constant temperature, pressure and composition, and ? is the interfacial tension, or interfacial free energy per unit area. If one of the phases is the pure liquid or solid, and the other the vapor of the substance, ? may properly be termed "surface tension," and is a characteristic of the solid or liquid. The attempt of a body to lower its free energy by decreasing its surface gives rise to a force in the surface which is numerically equal in terms of unit length to the free energy per unit area of the surface. Thus ? may be expressed either in erg-cm-² or in dyne-cm-1. Similarly, surface tension may be determined either by a thermo-dynamic measurement of the surface energy or by a mechanical measurement of the surface force. We have chosen the latter approach. Tammann and Boehme4 determined the surface tension of gold by measuring the amount of shrinkage or extension of thin weighted foil at various temperatures and interpolating to zero strain. The method is of questionable accuracy because of the tendency of foil to form minute tears when heated under tension. Their assumption of F = 2W?, where W is the width of the foil, is unsound, as the foil can decrease its surface area by transverse as well as by longitudinal shrinkage. Although their experimentation was meticulous, the paper does not include details of the sample configuration required for recalculating ? on a correct basis, even if such a calculation were possible. In the experimental procedure chosen here, a series of small weights of increasing magnitude are suspended from a series of line copper wires of uniform cross-section. This array is brought to a temperature at which creep is appreciable under extremely small stress. If the weight overbalances the contracting force of surface tension, the wire stretches; otherwise, it shrinks. IN 1943 the U. S. Bureau of Mines undertook drilling in an effort to develop new reserves of coking coal in an area near Paonia, Colo., as a part of an attempt to alleviate the shortage of known coking coal of good quality in the western United States. Geologic mapping of the area was undertaken by the U. S. Geological Survey with the purpose of first furnishing guidance in location of drillholes and later aiding in interpreting the results of the drilling. The drilling program was under the general supervision of A. L. Toenges of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. J. J. Dowd and R. G. Travis were in charge of the work in the field. Geologic mapping was started by D. A. Andrews of the Geological Survey in the summer of 1943 and was continued from the spring of 1944 to 1949 by the writer. The first few holes drilled failed to locate coking coal, but in the summer of 1944 coking coal was discovered by drilling 6 miles east of Somerset, Colo., the site of present mining. In the succeeding years, 1945 to 1948, 100 to 150 million tons of coal suitable for coking were blocked out by drilling. The ensuing discussion of the geologic controls on the distribution of coking coal in the area is based on the geologic mapping as well as the drilling done in the Paonia area, more complete descriptions of which have appeared or are in process of publication."&apos; In order that the possible geologic controls affecting the present distribution of coking coal may be considered, it is necessary to discuss briefly the indicators of coking quality coals. Coking Coal Coal that cokes has the property of softening to form a pastelike mass at high temperatures under reducing conditions in the coke oven. This softening is accompanied by the release of the volatile constituents as bubbles of gas. After release of the contained gases and upon cooling, a hard gray coherent but spongelike mass remains that is referred to as coke. This substance varies greatly in physical properties and, to be suitable for industrial use, must be sufficiently dense and strong to withstand the crushing pressure of heavy furnace loads. Western coals have a generally high volatile content and therefore form a satisfactory coke only when they attain a rather high fluidity during the process of heating arid distillation in the coke oven. When this high degree of fluidity is developed, the volatile constituents escape and leave a finely porous coke. On the other hand, when the degree of fluidity is low the product is an excessively porous and therefore physically weak mass that is called char." Small quantities of oxygen present in coal are believed to decrease the fluidity of the material during the coking process and to favor the development of char rather than coke. In consequence, coal chemists have for some time considered the possibility of developing an index to coking qualities by inspection of chemical analyses of coals.&apos; A formula has now been developed that does permit a rough preliminary estimate of the cokability of coal on the basis of the analysis on an ash and moisture-free basis. Coals may be eliminated as possible coking fuels if the oxygen content is greater than 11 pct. Similarly the ratio of hydrogen to oxygen must be greater than 0.5 and the ratio of fixed carbon to volatile constituents must be greater than 1.3. If the coal, on the basis of these limiting factors, appears to have possible coking qualities, the following formula permits determination of the coking index: a+b+c+d Coking index = -------- 5 a equals 22/oxygen content on ash and moisture-free basis, b equals two times the hydrogen content divided by oxygen content on moisture and ash-free basis, c equals fixed carbon/l.3 x volatile matter, and d equals the heating value on moist, ash-free basis/13,600. Coking indices higher than 1.0 suggest that the coal will coke, and indices above&apos; 1.1 indicate good coking tendencies. Although generally usable, this formula &apos;is not completely satisfactory because the percentage of oxygen shown in ultimate analyses is derived only by difference; i.e., by subtracting the sum of the percentages of the constituents determined analytically from 100 pct. Although the coking index indicates the coking tendencies of coal, it is necessary to make physical tests of coke before its industrial value can be determined. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has developed a standard procedure for determining the approximate strength of coke that would be formed from a given coal. In this test one part of ground coal, mixed with 15 parts of carborundum, is baked to form a standard briquette. The weight, in kilograms, necessary to crush the briquette is termed the agglutinating index. This test determines the relative fluidity attained in the coking process by measuring the cementing strength of the coal in the briquette. A
