The recycling of end-of-life concrete into new concrete is one of the most interesting options for reducing worldwide natural resources use and emissions associated with the building materials sector. The possibility to realize a larger re-use of silica aggregates from old concrete, strongly contributes to reduce environmental impact (reduced exploitation of natural resources, reduction of CO2 emissions, airborne dust production, etc.).To reach this goal, innovative processing techniques, as well as innovative sensing units and architectures have to be developed. In this perspective an analytical approach, based on hyperspectral sensing techniques, is proposed, discussed and critically evaluated in order to perform an automatic quality control assessment, finalized to maintain a high standard of concrete demolition waste, from the earliest stage of recycling to the further processing stages, according to the detected in-situ demolition waste characteristics. The paper deals with the analysis and the evaluation of the problems related to the integration of this approach with state-of-the-art demolition and building processes and procedures. Froth flotation is an industrial process commonly used for the separation of mineral particles. Bubbles sparged in a pulp collect and carry hydrophobic particles to the top layer of a flotation cell, the froth zone. There is a strong correlation between the stability of the froth phase and the flux of solids. However, flotation units placed in series operate, as a whole, in a non-steady state regime with the concentration of particle decreasing from one cell to the next resulting in a decrease in froth stability, which can compromise the recovery of valuables. Organic chemical reagents, frothers, are generally added to prevent fine bubbles from coalescing and to increase the stability of the froth phase. Frothers represent the second largest group of mining chemicals. It is crucial to understand the resulting properties of the frother on the froth phase in order to select the most suitable reagent for a particular operation. The bubble coalescence dynamic of three different surfactants, 1-pentanol, poly (propylene glycol), and tri (propylene glycol) methyl ether, were investigated in this study. In the first stage, the stabilisation mechanism of bubbles in a solution of surfactant was investigated using a specifically designed experimental setup. The coalescence behaviour of bubble pairs was recorded using high-speed video imaging in which information such as the coalescence time and the deformation of the resultant bubble upon coalescence could be extracted. The results were then compared between the different surfactants for several concentrations. It is shown in a study that the coalescence time increases with surfactant concentration until the Gibbs-Marangoni effect is suppressed by bulk diffusion. Conversely, the oscillation of the resultant bubble was found to be affected only at concentrations at which the film is saturated. The implications of the effects of surfactant type and concentration on the coalescence time and bubble oscillation in froth flotation are discussed. With implementation of stringent environmental regulations, ultra clean coal technology development programs have gained significant importance worldwide. As far as Indian scenario is concerned, most of the coals present in India are of drift origin and low grade, containing high mineral matter varying from 15% to greater than 50%. The inorganic or ash constituents of Indian coals are finely disseminated through the organic or carbonaceous constituents so, that commonly used physical beneficiation techniques are of only limited value in affecting separation. Chemical processes involve addition of chemicals, which react with the mineral matter and allow its easy removal. The present study envisages the effect of aqueous alkali leaching followed by acid washing on the removal of mineral matter from two different captive coals of Tata Steel at elevated temperature and pressure. The experiments are conducted at desired conditions using a bench scale pressure reactor set up having proper data acquisition and control system. The research study revealed, that it is possible to reduce the ash content up to 70% by this method. The alkali content of the product clean coal does not increase whereas the silica and alumina content reduces by nearly 58% and 62% respectively. Significant reduction in the phosphorus content is observed after the acid treatment. The crucible swelling number of the feed coal improves after the treatment. The mechanism of demineralisation was evaluated by analyzing the coal samples before and after the alkali and acid treatment using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Because of the acidic nature of the silicates and aluminates, they dissolve into the NaOH solution and form sodalite. Sodalite is partially soluble in the alkali solution. The hydrates formed during alkali treatment are partially removed due to acid wash. This study in overall provides an insight into possible alternative methods of beneficiation for removal of ash from high ash Indian coals.

This paper describes a new magnetic separator integrating dynamic permanent magnetic force, gravity and flow dynamics to enhance the quality of the iron concentration. This equipment can increase the grade of concentrate by controlling the formation of magnetic agglomerations to reject most gangue. Test results indicates that the compound force field separator can be applied in improving the quality of iron concentrate and has a wide range of potential market applications. Next generation flotation agents of KSK series for the concentration of complex copper-lead ores and the new ferromagnetic nanosized depressor of galena are introduced in this work. The feature of the KSK flotation agents is that they exhibit both frother and collector properties. KSK-6 can successfully substitute the widely used in Kazakhstani industry reagent ?-80 at the reduced consumption of butyl xanthate by 30 %. The new ferromagnetic nanosized depressor of galena, besides a low consumption rate of 100 g/t, also makes possible to exclude sodium sulfite (3-4 kg/t) and ferrous sulfate (5-6 kg/t) from the separation process, and receive high metal grade concentrates. Drilling and Blasting are two important unit operations in the production cycle of a mine and a strong link exists between these two and other unit operations/subsystems like loading, transportation, and crushing. Under the present concept of ? Mine to Mill?, it is important to optimize the drilling and blasting operations by applying scientific approach to drilling and blasting using sophisticated instruments and new technologies, which depends heavily on Information technology (IT) to meet this imperative. Development of innovative models and software has lead to blast optimization process. Till date, the blast results are evaluated in terms of available empirical approaches like powder factor, which are too simple to exclude some key parameters or lack in providing reliability because of non-availability of user friendly IT enabled techniques. Although with the help of developed approaches, formulation of user-friendly software to assist the site engineers in effective post blast assessment has started but there is a dearth of holistic approach to design an optimum blast considering the techno-economic feasibility of the subsystems and the geo-mining conditions to achieve blast optimization. The science of IT enablement in drilling and blasting is capable to build innovative models for achieving blast performances which will be doped with productivity, economy and safety with due regard to environment. The present paper discusses the use of existing IT enablement in various mines of India citing the Indian scenario and the future requirements for achieving the techno-economics in overall mining operations.

The complex nature of multi-phase flow in dense medium cyclones has restricted plant operators and designers to rely on empirical equations for predicting the performance. A number of empirical cyclone models have been developed in the past (Wood, 1990; Dunglison, 2002). In recent years, this subject has been broached with computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Most of the CFD models have not considered the correct rheological behavior of magnetite medium while simulating the medium segregation inside the cyclone. These models mostly predict excessive underflow volumetric flow rates. In this paper simulations of magnetite medium in a dense medium cyclone, were conducted in FLUENT where the particle phases were simulated using the modified Mixture model. The turbulence was resolved using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model. The rheological behavior of medium was considered in the form of Granular viscosity, Newtonian and Non-Newtonian models corrected with particle loadings and fraction of ultrafines. Multi-phase simulations using granular viscosity option although predict the overall split product medium densities reasonably close to experiments, the mixture viscosity values are restricted to substantially lower values, similar to water viscosity. Simulations using Newtonian viscosity model corrected with particle loading, and fine fraction below 53µm size is predicting overall mixture viscosity levels well over water viscosity levels, but under predicting the under flow the underflow medium density. Multi-phase simulations using Non-Newtonian Herschel-Buckley model, calibrated for superfine magnetite medium measured viscosities, is closely predicting the medium segregation with gamma ray tomography data. Overall predicted product medium densities, underflow volume split are close to the experimental data. This model is can be further used to simulate coal portioning and hence in developing new designs.

Eight oil sand ores with the bitumen content ranging between 3.6 and 15 wt.% and the fines content (-44 micrometers size fraction) between 9 and 69 vol.% were subjected to the standard alkali extraction test used to measure the degree of oxidation of metallurgical coals. The results showed that there is a strong correlation between the absorbance of extracted solutions at a wavelength of 520 nm and the ratio of the fines content to the bitumen content. The latter factor is directly relevant to assessing the extractability of bitumen from oil sand ores. Bitumen extraction tests showed that the bitumen recovery decreased from 90 % to 30 % when the absorbance at 520 nm increased from 0.23 to 0.64. A comparison of the UV/visible spectra of solutions obtained from the alkali extraction tests with solutions of Aldrich Humic Acids suggest that low bitumen/high fines oil sand ores release substantial amounts of organic matter very similar, if not identical, to humic acids. In contrast, high-bitumen and low-fines ores do not release as much of the organic matter, and UV spectra of these leached substances are quite different from those of humic acids. Overall, the results show that chemical composition of bitumen in the tested ores varies greatly with ore type and oxidation, and that the alkali extraction test is a promising technique to quickly assess the extractability of bitumen from a given ore type.

At Tata Steel, Coal is washed in gravity and froth flotation circuit at 13-15 mm size and below. Being coal is high in ash (~35%) and difficult washability characteristics (having high (~40 %) NGM at desired ash levels) needs more and timely quality data of ROM for effective optimization and process control. Conventional approach of supplying quality data takes 4-5 hours time. This means during this period, it is assumed that coal is having similar characteristics as of previous set and it is not possible to fine tune during this time which resulted in yield loss. Hence producing clean coal on agreed ash value consistently is a challenging task because of high NGM and variation in input quality. To overcome the problem of collection of representative sample and timely result a new technology was adopted Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) technology which is basically an online analyser using Gamma rays as the source to measure the ash content in coal running on a conveyor which gives real time ash analysis. The effective utilization of the energy in comminution devices depend on how efficiently the broken particles leave the breakage field as soon as they reach product size. In crushers the transport of broken particles smaller than CSS is done by gravity (vertical) thus allowing the energy to be applied to new particles. However, in AG/SAG mills, gravity becomes the energy field and the transport of particles is horizontal which needs a suitable discharge mechanism and has been found to have significant effect on grinding efficiency. The material transport in AG/SAG mills depend on how efficiently the discharge system (grate and pulp lifters) operates. Material transport plays a significant role on efficiency of horizontal grinding mills ? AG/SAG/Ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a Greenfield milling operation at Mirabela Mineração?s SantaRita Nickel operation located in northeastern part of Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, which was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 mtpa (575tph) to produce a P80 of 125um with 10-12% ball charge in SAG mill. However, it has been operating as ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity has been achieved in few days and has gradually increased to an average of +800 tph and still it is operating in ABC mode. The milling circuit commissioning resulted in small and relatively simple measures to rectify, which was reflected in the rapid commissioning of the milling circuit and it achieved the nameplate capacity within days. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30?x 15.4? 8.5MW SAG Mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPL TM ) in close circuit with HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20? x 28.4? 5.5MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 x 26? CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimization, and future development works. Charge motion is of prime importance in the efficiency of comminution in tumbling mills. Since direct observation of charge shape and its motion in industrial mill are not possible, a combination of analytical and physical studies was used to determine charge trajectory. Software packages, which predict charge motion such as the GMT (Grinding Media Trajectory) only consider the outermost layer of charge (single ball) and ignore the interactions of grinding elements. In this research, the measured charge trajectory in a 1m-diameter mill with the transparent end, called model mill, was compared with that of the GMT. Four types of polyurethane rings were accurately machined to scale down the liners arrangements at two industrial mills. To explore various charge shapes and trajectories, the model mill was operated at 55, 70 and 85% of critical speed for five levels of mill filling (10, 15, 20, 25 and 30% by volume). The angular displacement of the toe, toe departure, shoulder and charge impact point were determined from the photographs taken from the model mill. New relationships to predict charge shape and charge impact points were introduced to modify the GMT results. The relationships were validated by the model mill using the new liner of the Sarcheshmeh copper complex SAG mill. The relative error of prediction was found to be 1.1%. The results indicated that when the lifter face angle increased from 7 to 30º, the distance between the charge impact point and the toe decreased from 52 to 31º for 25% filling. This meant increasing the probability of charge impacting the toe not the liner which favoured more efficient comminution practice. After converting AG mills to SAG mills on account of liner profile change, 31% increase in throughput (from 419 to 548 t/h) in addition to 4% decrease in the product size (from 516 to 496 µm) were realized which was a significant contribution in the plant performance improvement.

Cone crushers are widely used within the mining and aggregate industries for the size reduction of minerals, ores, and rock materials. In mining applications for example, the product from cone crushers is often fed to HPGRs or directly to mills in the subsequent grinding circuit. An improved cone crusher performance can therefore result in an overall improved and more efficient comminution process. The objective of this paper is to systematically study a number of different ways of applying compressive crushing. By mathematically modelling these different crushing concepts and then theoretically optimizing crushing sequences accordingly, each concept can be studied and evaluated. In addition, aspects concerning whether or not the results are mechanically or practically achievable are considered. This study thus explores the advantages and disadvantages of different crushing concepts. In this paper, four different theoretical crushing concepts are presented and studied. The results show that in terms of interparticle crushing, optimal crushing sequences with varying compression ratios can be replaced by easier implemented series of constant compressions without significant deterioration. It is also shown that that considerably better performance is obtained for crushing sequences with both breakage modes. The subsequent comparison between such concepts indicates that different approaches can achieve the same results, and that the different concepts are comparable. It is further concluded that interparticle crushing should be kept to a minimum if fines generation or energy consumption is to be minimized, and that each of the studied concepts presents different challenges for implementation. The Republic of Tajikistan has large mercury-antimony deposit. The Republic takes the second place in the countries of the CIS by having antimony recourses or the fourth place in the world. Recently, on the mine bottom horizons the resources of gold were found. Gold in the data ore is submitted as nanosize particles. Results of ores enrichment of bottom horizons of Djijikrut deposit are obtained by a method of flotation. The flow sheet includes the rougher flotation, two scavenging flotation and two cleaner flotation. As a result of enrichment of ore, the mercury-antimony concentrate with the contents of 51.5% of antimony and recovery 90.3% from ore with the content of mercury of 3.5% was received. The investigation of thallium, selenium, and tellurium distributions on products of enrichment was carried out. The most effective reagents are a mixture of oksafore and butyl xanthogenate. While applying this mixture of reagents it is possible to refuse of the use of activator - nitrate lead. The behavior of gold is in details investigated during enrichment. To collective flotation concentrate is extracted only 30% of gold. The basic quantity of gold concentrates in tailings of flotation and is not taken by existing traditional methods. The alternative innovative technology of gold extraction was created. Various methods of roasting of a collective mercury - antimony concentrate oxidizing and reducing are investigated. Vacuum distillation of concentrate allocation in serial sublimates mercury and antimony was designed. In the received calcine concentrates gold. At additional roasting of a calcine up to 900°? concentration of gold makes 30.6 g/t. The offered innovational technology in a complex allows to process ores and concentrates unique mercury-antimony?gold bearing raw material. The slag was attempted to be converted into the adsorbent for phosphate removal from aqueous solution using the alkali fusion method. The slag was mixed with NaOH powder (NaOH / Slag = 1.6), and then the mixture was heated at 600 ? for 6 h to prepare the precursor. The precursor was stirred at room temperature in distilled water to synthesize the adsorbent, and the removal ability of the obtained adsorbent for phosphate from aqueous solution was investigated. The products, including hydrocalumite and calcite, were synthesized, and the removal efficiencies of the adsorbent for F- and PO43- showed higher than those of raw BF slag, especially removal of PO43- are excellent (99 %), while the removal of Cl- , SO42-, NO3- and Br- was minor. The adsorbent could remove PO43- selectively in the co-existing solution of Cl-, NO3-, F-, SO42- and Br-.The equilibrium adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for PO43- was extrapolated using Langmuir and Freundlich models, and experimental data are found to fit Langmuir than Freundlich. The calculated maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for PO43- is higher than other adsorbent reported previously. The high affinity of the adsorbent for PO43- in aqueous solution was caused by the formation of hydroxyapatite [Ca5(PO4)3(OH)] and brushite [CaHPO4?2H2O]. Certainly, one of the core processes for the recovery of fine magnetic susceptible iron ore particles, mainly hematite iron ores, is the wet high intensity magnetic separation or WHIMS. This paper outlines a variety of recent developments and innovative process designs in the JONES® type WHIMS. It highlights the latest examples of flow sheets in terms of the diversity of combined rougher, scavenger, cleaner stages and adds to this the new more advanced JONES® type WHIMS equipment technologies like the HIGH FLOW ? HF, the QUATTRO ? Q and the SPLITT OPERATION ? SP. As a result of the increase of the capacity and magnetic intensity, the specific production cost could be decreased. The high worldwide acceptance for this continuous development testifies for the success and state of the art technology.

Water for domestic consumption is an essential right of society, which must be over secured. Water reclamation and reuse provides a unique and viable opportunity to augment traditional water supplies. As a multi-discipline and important element of water resource development and management, water reuse can help to close the loop between water supply and wastewater disposal. Effective water reuse requires integration of water and reclaimed water supply functions. During the coal mining activities, large quantities of water get contaminated and loses its potability characteristics. On an average, in coal mine operation, each coal mine discharges effluents at a rate of nearly 0.5 MGD and thereby wastage of nearly 50 MGD of water takes place per day from the famous Jharia Coal Field of the Dhanbad District. In this paper, attempt has been made to control the extremely high turbidity of mine waste water by using different coagulants and it is observed that ferrous sulphate is the most effective coagulants followed by alum, ferric sulphate and lime. Also combinations of coagulants are used for getting the optimal results. Further steps were also discussed to make this water potable and a scheme of low cost water supply system of mine waste water has been suggested under the Water Management Strategies. Coking of coal blends using high volatile coals with poor coking abilities to produce a high quality coke for blast furnace application can be achieved by compacting the coal blend prior to the carbonization process. Here densification up to a relative material density of 80 %, i.e. a compact density around 1100 kg/m3, has proven to be advantageous. Coal is compacted by stamping, if the so-called stamp charging process applied. Compacting of the coal by pressing is practised in case of the cokemaking with so-called heat-recovery ovens. Stamped and pressed coal cakes require over the cake volume uniform high density and mechanical stability. Besides the aspects of the coal selection, the efficiency of the process is mainly determined by the operating parameters compacting time and compacting energy for coal cake making. At the Department for Mechanical Process Engineering & Solids Processing of the Technical University Berlin the two sub-processes of densification and strengthening during stamping and during pressing are theoretically and experimentally investigated using specially developed lab-scale compacting test units and a strength test device. Describing cake density in terms of coal properties for a given coal and measured compacting energy input then leads to a compacting equation with the so-called Stampability as the integral model parameter for the stamping process. For the pressing process the cake density can be calculated with the measured compacting pressure and the Compressibility factor, respectively. Investigations were carried out to provide evidence of a significant influence of coal type, coal surface moisture, coal granulometric and mechanical properties on the densification process. The overall objective of the work is to establish a comprehensive mathematical model on the compacting behavior of large coal bulk quantities and the optimization of the compacting processes by stamping and by pressing. In this study, the effect of adaptation of B.subtilis to sphalerite and galena with respect to the selective flotation of sphalerite from the sphalerite-galena synthetic mixture has been examined. The changes in the surface charge of the mineral and the bacterium, cell wall components and the profiles of secreted proteins are discussed. The flotation recovery of galena increases with the increase in the adaptation cycle of B.subtilis to sphalerite and galena, while the flotation recovery of sphalerite is independent of the adaptation cycle with either mineral. From the gel electrophoresis analysis, the protein profile for the unadapted and adapted cells is found to differ distinctly and this may be attributed to varying molecular weight fractions arising from different growth conditions. Electrokinetic measurements showed shifts in the iso-electric points of not only B.subtilis but also of the chosen minerals after adaptation. Additionally, the zeta potential of B.subtilis is found to become less negative after bacterial adaptation to the chosen sulfide minerals, while it showed an increase in the magnitude of surface negative charge after various enzymatic treatments. The change in the surface morphology and cell wall components such as phosphate, uronic acid and acetylated sugars of the bacterial species during adaptation to sphalerite and galena has been assessed. Selective flotation tests on a synthetic mixture of galena and sphalerite confirm that sphalerite can be preferentially floated from galena in the presence of the insoluble fraction of lysed B.subtilis cells initially adapted to sphalerite, with a high selectivity index. Large quantities of electrical and electronic equipments are discarded at the end-of-life (EOL) in different industries and house hold applications. Their disposal is creating a challenging environmental problem due to the presence of hazardous metals and non-metallic materials such as epoxy resins and plastics including brominated flame retardants etc particularly in printed circuit boards (PCBs). The recovery valuable metals and separation of hazardous materials from discarded PCBs will not only conserve the resources but also mitigate the environmental pollution. From a recycling point of view for a sustainable society, the studies have been carried out for the recovery of metal values from EOL-PCBs of DVD video players (DVD-PCBs) and vacuum cleaners (VC-PCBs) using physical beneficiation techniques. The concentration of the metals was found to be 43 wt.% and 30 wt.% in DVD-PCBs and VC-PCBs, respectively. Both the PCBs samples were ground in a hammer mill after cutting and their size analysis was carried out. The liberation of the metallic and non-metallic fractions was investigated under the microscope for different size fractions. Subsequently, froth flotation and pneumatic air separation studied were carried out to enrich the metallic constituents. The studies showed the enrichment of metals in coarser particles (-1000 +150 µm) and non-metals in the finer particles -150 µm following mechanical recycling process. A grade of 90 % with 75% recovery was achieved by froth flotation, but lower grade and recovery of 75% and 65% respectively were obtained by pneumatic separation with -1500 µm powders for DVD-PCBs. A grade of 86% metal was obtained by froth flotation with 76% recovery in the case of VC-PCBs. The lower grade of 65% with almost same recovery was achieved during pneumatic separation studies due to lower concentration of metals in VC-PCBs. The studies also showed that the froth flotation is an efficient process for enrichment of metals from both the samples. The process is environmental friendly as no chemicals are employed during entire processing. The higher recovery and grade of metal is expected to be obtained on a large scale beneficiation process.

There are discussed the possibilities of using of flotation tailings of platinum-copper-nickel sulfide ores of the Norilsk region for the preparation of backfill mixture instead of a specially produced rock and binder materials to reduce the cost of stowing operations and impact on the environment. It is shown that due to the presence in the tailings of flotation up to 10% of sulfide sulphur, which reduces the strength of the fill materials, and more than 1 g/t PGM it is necessary the preliminary extraction of the sulfides in the product for further processing that give an opportunity to reduce the losses of valuable components. It is shown that by the flotation of the current tailings it is possible to extract 91% of sulfide sulphur, 60% of palladium and 30% platinum in 17% sulfide concentrate containing 2.1 g/t palladium, and to reduce the sulphur content in the tailings up to 0.7%. Due to the easy oxidation of pyrrhotite, there is recommended fractional delivery of the collector with a total consumption 200 g/t. There are discussed results of the flotation study with an additional collector of PGM (sodium diizobutyditiophosfinate), which one show the possibility to increase extraction of platinum on 45%, as well as extraction of sulphur and palladium. For the flotation of sulfides and PGM from the current tailings there is recommended a combination of collectors for primary flotation and only butyl xanthate using in control operations. The possibility of using sludge fraction of the current tailings as a component for the preparation of the combined cementing materials after exposure of sulfides is analyzed. It is shown that the efficiency of the flotation of sulfides from this fraction can be enhanced using selective flocculants. There are discussed the advantages of implementation of completely hydrophobic butadiene-styrene copolymer in comparison with partially hydrophobic polymers. There is discussed an efficiency of the mechanochemical treatment of old tailings in turbo mill and sulphuric acid to remove oxide films from the surface of pyrrhotite before its flotation. Due to the pretreatment operation there is achieved increasing of sulphur extraction and after the introduction to the flotation circuit three control operations there is produced the fill material with sulphur content 2.5%.
