Conditions encountered at a recently completed brownfields mining project provided valuable insight into, and development of, techniques for working in and around known underground mining voids in an open cut environment. The careful application of underground blasting principles to a pit environment and successful excavation whilst maintaining appropriate stand-off distances were two primary areas of innovation enabling the success of the project.Mary Mac Hill is a gold deposit situated less than 2 km south-west of the town of Laverton, Western Australia. It is owned and mined by Crescent Gold Limited. Previous underground mining by various other mining companies has left an extensive network of underground horizontal development, subvertical stopes and shafts, some of which daylighted at surface. This was identified as potentially posing substantial risks, which would prevent the application of conventional mining methods. Two major stopes were located under a hard banded iron ridge topped by a peak of cap, connected variously by narrow drives and vertical development. Due to the proximity of the first of these stopes to the surface, its dimensions and governed by procedures and advice provided by externally engaged engineers, Crescent Gold could not access the area of the ridge immediately overlying the stope using conventional open cut mining methods. This was the first of many hurdles surmounted in mining this deposit.The following report outlines how the challenges this geometrically complex deposit presented. Solving these problems enabled the team to mine the contained gold ore to a completed design, without subjecting personnel or mining equipment to harm due to a void breach incident. This paper outlines the numerous complications and difficulties Mary Mac Hill posed and explains the strategies developed to overcome them. Mining of lignite is the largest bulk materials handling activity in Europe. In order to mine this lignite, with an average calorific value of only a third of bituminous coal in an economical way, highly efficient opencast mining technology is mandatory. The total continuous mining of overburden and lignite was introduced more than 60 years ago and was subsequently developed stepwise into the largest mass transport system of the world. In 2011, the Inden Mine, one of three RWE Power mines, stripped 90 Mbcm of overburden to produce 22 Mt of lignite. In total, nearly 100 Mt of Lignite was produced from the three mines of RWE Power in Germany. Beside bucket wheel excavators (BWE), several high-performance in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) systems, which allow the adoption of continuous mining systems, even for typical shovel and truck (S&T) operations, are available today. RWE Power assists operators considering a change from the S&T to IPCC technology, both in the planning process involving large-scale belt conveyor systems and later with operational know how transfer. In a number of cases, the challenges associated with this system change have been addressed and solved successfully. One key challenge is managing the development of skills for operating the belt conveyor systems efficiently. This paper compares the effectiveness of S&T to different configurations of continuous mining operation for an up to 170 m deep mine with a total annual output of 117 Mbcm. From the mine operatorÆs point-of-view, the quantity and skill level of staffing required for operation and maintenance are discussed in detail. The analysis of equipment trends in The AusIMMÆs revision of Monograph 19 - Australasian Mining and Metallurgical Operating Practices (AMMOP) (in prep) in the paper by Graham Lumley raised some interesting, and in parts disturbing, trends in the Australian open cut mining industry. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2011) the productivity of the whole mining industry is down by 34 per cent since 2001. In terms of open cut equipment, median output for draglines is down by 15 per cent since 2003, electric rope shovels are down by 41 per cent since 2003, hydraulic excavators are down by 39 per cent since 2008, front-end loaders are down by 39 per cent since 2007 and trucks are down by 41 per cent since 2006. Clearly e boom has not been good for the efficiency of the mines. During this same time, best practice (defined as the average of the top ten per cent by annual output per unit of input) has declined, but not by as much as the median (eg shovels down by eight per cent, excavators down by 19 per cent and FELs down by five per cent). This paper will build on the analysis of AMMOP to understand the differences occurring between median and best practice and identify the factors contributing to the decline in performance. As the industry enters a period of potentially lower prices for commodities and reduced margins, pressure will be brought to bear on mine sites to start moving more with the equipment they have. An understanding of where efficiency has been lost will be a key component in that. With staff productivity and retention a crucial factor in the longevity of AustraliaÆs mining industry, some mining companies are increasing their focus on the health and well-being of their people, to minimise the risks of deteriorating health in an ageing workforce. Many of AustraliaÆs mining operations rely heavily on long distance commuter (LDC) rosters, which are argued to have a significant impact upon worker health, wellbeing and lifestyle choices. The potential impact of workforce health on mine safety performance, efficiency and operating practice is an interesting additional line of enquiry. Food choice, exercise and recreation initiatives offer living and working conditions that æempower healthy choicesÆ in the shift worker community, but do not guarantee improved worker wellbeing. This paper explores first-hand the experiences of one individual over two and a half years of employment at different mine sites, under different shift conditions and across different operating crews. The Bayer process used for refining bauxite to smelting grade Alumina serves as the linchpin of the Aluminum production industry worldwide. Even though the process is well established, the presence of impurities in the liquor affects the quality of product and imposes a major economic cost on the industry. This review article focuses on the issues pertaining to Gibbsitic (Al2O3.3H2O) precipitation circuit. The comprehensive review provides a basic understanding of the aluminum trihydrate precipitation and agglomeration phenomena. Crystal growth rate and agglomeration play a significant role in determining the output PSD of agglomerates. Hence, the effect of certain thermodynamic and hydrodynamic parameters along with the impact of impurities (oxalates, aldols, acids etc.) and additives on hydrate growth has been reviewed.

With a growing emphasis on maximizing the value by rapidly deploying it across their assets, mining firms are eager to identify any issues that may hinder such efforts and to refine their approaches to overcome them. As such a CDE vision can be considered realized when the following components are addressed and functioning as intended - People: the right resources working together and efficiently to achieve shared goals, Process: well-defined workflows mapped out for key value processes, Technology: availability of the correct tools and applications to increase efficiency in work execution and Locations: regional locations/ sites that need to be linked for collaboration and information exchange. For the above vision, an approach that considers the degree of interaction between the roles in metallurgy operations, mineral resource planning, mine engineering, plant operations, logistics and infrastructure, and which accounts for the current technology states across these groups to determine sub-processes where the impact of a CDE will be the most is critical. In effect, CDE is more about transforming an organization?s operational philosophy than a technology driven project. This paper examines the definition and components of a CDE in a mining context. Real-time operations co-ordination, maintenance interventions, production analysis and optimization processes are examined along with current state technologies and manual processes as candidates which are likely to result in most benefits from collaborative work processes. Finally, the paper examines technologies that can be used to further enable a collaborative working environment.

For an emerging economy like India, Mining and Mineral based industries form the back bone of our economic development. Thus, sustainability of mining and mineral processing industry has a far reaching impact on sustainable economic development of our nation. While at a macro-economic level, we have to strike a balance between economic development vis-à-vis socio-economic & environmental impacts, Industries have to ensure judicious and frugal use of natural resources by making use of energy efficient plants & machineries and adopting befitting technology for reduction & recycling of waste. In the context of the above, it would be interesting to look into the sustainability measures taken up by National Aluminium company (Nalco) at its Crushing & conveying plant at Panchpatmali Bauxite Mine, which is incidentally Asia?s largest Bauxite Mine. In the backdrop of the above stated facts, in this paper the authors make an attempt to bring out the sustainability issues in areas of energy conservation, environmental impact/pollution vis-a-vis mitigation measures adopted in crusher & conveyor plant of Panchpatmali Bauxite Mine & CSR / peripheral developmental activities undertaken by Nalco to mitigate the socio- economic impacts. Activated carbon is widely used in the removal of organic and/or inorganic contaminants from waste water due to its high surface area, porous structure, and specific surface reactivity. However, in practical applications, it is difficult to recover the activated carbon completely by screening or classification. In this project,we prepared a magnetic form of activated carbon (magnetic activated carbon or M-AC) by precipitation of iron oxides on the surface of activated carbon. The M-AC can be easily separated from effluents by applying an external magnetic field, thus it can be recycled and regenerated for reuse. M-AC was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), specific surface area measurement, and scanning electron microscope (SEM).XRD results show that the major phase of coated iron oxides on activated carbon is magnetite (Fe3O4). The specific surface area of activated carbon was found to be reduced after the impregnation of magnetite particles on the surface. The SEM micrograph shows the aggregation of the iron oxides on the surface of activated carbon. M-ACwas found effective in removing DETA (diethylenetriamine) species and metal ions from solutions. Cu (II) with initial concentrations from 5 ppm to25 ppm in solution is removed by more than 99% with the addition of 0.1 wt.%ofM-AC. For the removal of 25 ppm DETA species from solution, an addition of 0.5 wt.% of M-AC is required due to the larger size of the DETA molecule. Moreover, M-AC showed a good loadingproperty for nickel and gold ions from solutions. M-ACshows a better adsorption capacityover activated carbon and its potential applications in carbon-in-pulp for gold leaching and waste water treatment. Progress is reported on capturing the effects of gangue chemistry in the context of a comprehensive stockpile heap leach model for leaching copper sulfide ores, employing leading edge computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology. The stockpile is a complex multi-phase process, comprising of a solid porous media, with complex fluid flow, gas and liquid phases, competing solid-liquid reactions, dissolution of minerals and transport through the heap. The model accounts for many of the challenging physical and chemical features of the heap, including transport and reactions kinetics for the important copper and iron sulfide minerals, ferrous oxidation, bacterial effects, thermal energy, acid and sulfate balances. In this contribution, the model has been extended to incorporate dissolution of various species from gangue reactions and precipitation of hydronium and potassium jarosite, ferric hydroxide, alunite, and gypsum. The effect of aeration on the simulation of a copper sulfide heap leach is provided as an example.

Nowadays heap leaching has become established as a mineral processing technology for treatment of some low grade minerals such as copper, gold, and zinc, etc. Heap height, particle size, leach reagent consumption, and metal recovery are four important metallurgical parameters in a hydrometallurgical process like heap leaching. This paper investigated the effects of heap height and particle size on copper recovery as well as acid consumption. Three heap heights of 2, 4 and 6 meters and two particle size fractions of less than 25.4 mm and 50.8 mm were selected as variables in the experiments. The research results showed the inverse relation between heap height and copper recovery as well as acid consumption. Under given conditions, the copper recoveries of minus 25.4 mm ore are 78.63%, 66.27% and 52.88% higher than that of minus 50.8 mm samples for the heap heights of 2, 4, and 6 m, respectively. Grinding and flotation operations deliver better-optimized performance when they are monitored and controlled in terms of the minerals they process rather than as elemental assays that we usually refer to. Mesh of grind (MoG), liberation, floatability, grade and recovery etc. are more directly related with the minerals and their characteristics rather than the elemental assays. Hence, online analyzers only provide the status for the grade and recovery of metals and not the direction for the enhanced performance. Central Research and Development Laboratory (CRDL) and Rampura Agucha Mine (RAM) mill section of Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) jointly undertook various survey campaigns in the grinding and flotation process streams. Grinding circuit surveys involved systematic collection of representative samples from different grinding circuit streams under stabilized conditions for monitoring particle size and process mineralogy details across individual grinding circuit. Flotation survey campaigns included study of fort-nightly / monthly composites of un-ground flotation feed, lead concentrate, lead tailing, zinc concentrate and final tailing samples for size distribution details in the 150 ? 38 micron range, chemical analysis and mineral characterization through optical microscope. This work details the investigations results and their implications on beneficiation performance. Grinding circuit survey campaigns supported the task for modifying the originally installed configuration of hydrocyclones, to limit recovery losses due to excess grinding of soft galena and related silver minerals. Flotation plant surveys helped in adjusting flotation circuit process parameters to reduce loss of liberated and floatable galena and sphalerite grains into their respective tailing streams. Influence of frothers (a-terpineol and n-octanol) concentration on kinetics of a three phase contact (TPC) formation by a bubble colliding with a hydrophobic surface (Teflon) of different roughness was studied using a high-speed camera (1040 frames per second). It was found that the Teflon surface roughness and the frother concentration strongly affected time of the TPC formation (tTPC) and time of drainage (tD) of the liquid film separating the colliding bubble from the solid surfaces. With increasing Teflon surface roughness, from ca 1 to 80 µm, the time of the TPC formation was shortened by over the order of magnitude, from ca 100 to a few milliseconds only. At low a-terpineol and n-octanol concentrations, thetTPC values were shorter than in distilled water due to lowering the bubble velocity in the frother presence and diminished bouncing of the colliding bubble. However, at high frothers concentrations the tTPC values were prolonged, despite that the bubble velocity was similar. The prolongation of the tTPC at high frother concentrations indicates that air (micro- and/or nano-bubbles) was present at the Teflon surfaces of different roughness. The mechanism of the tTPCprolongation at high frother dosage is described.

Taknar polymetal (Cu-Zn-Au-Ag-Pb) deposit and concentration flotation plant are located in the northeast of Iran. The flotation feed contains Chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pyrite with 4, 4 and 8 percent respectively. Cu and Zn contents are 1.26 and 3.5 present. Pyrite decreases the quality of base metal concentrates and increases the amount of sulfur compounds produced in the base metal extraction processes. Therefore, depression of pyrite is essential in the concentration of base metal sulfides by flotation. For flotation tests, 4 mixed collector systems, MIBC (20g/t), lime and tow depression systems (sodium cyanide (60g/t)-zinc sulphate and dextrin (300g/t)-zinc sulphate) were used as collector, frother, pH regulator and pyrite-sphalerite depressants in the chalcopyrite flotation stage, respectively, and SIPX, MIBC, lime and copper sulphate (as activator) were used in sphalerite flotation from first stage tailings. The results have shown that, sodium cyanide is a suitable depressant for pyrite and sphalerite in the first stage of flotation. Compared to dextrin as depressant, chalcopyrite recovery was decreased approximately 1.83%. In addition, when sodium cyanide was used as pyrite depressant, copper sulphate consumption raised approximately 90 g/t for activation of sphalerite. From Environment and HSE points of view, dextrin is natural, biodegradable, and non-toxic while cyanide is very high toxic. Copper concentrate containing complex sulphides of Cu-Ni with 14.13% Cu and 10.04% Ni besides impurities such as 0.33% Co and 0.71% Mo, is not acceptable to the copper smelters due to the smelting problems. Selective bioleaching of nickel from the concentrate can be considered an an option to make it suitable for copper smelter. Effect of elemental sulphur and pyrite on the bioleaching of Ni and Co has been investigated using a mixed culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A.f.) and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans (A.t.). Parameters such as pH, temperature, particles, size etc. were optimised to understand the role of additives in the bioleaching. With 2% S at 308K, 2.0 pH, 5% pulp density and 200µm size particles while shaking at 100 rpm, 79% Ni, 41% Co and 5% Cu were bioleached as compared to the leaching of 81% Ni and 45% Co in presence of 10 wt% pyrite in 60 days; 27% Ni, 24% Co and 4% Cu were recovered in sterile experiment. The selective dissolution of nickel and cobalt as compared to copper may be explained by galvanic interaction between chalcopyrite: pentlandite / pyrrhotite. Bioleaching was facilitated by strong oxidizing conditions due to higher Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio/redox potential (ESCE) as a result of improved interaction of minerals through biooxidation of sulphur and accelerated galvanic interaction by pyrite. The mechanism of selective leaching of Ni and Co was established by XRD phase identification.

The relative abundance of coal in India compared to other fossil fuels makes it a natural choice as the primary source of fuel, be it for steel making, power generation or for other uses. The wide variations in nature and type of Indian coals formed during lower Gondawana period and categorized as difficult-to-wash due to its typical mineral matter association with the organic matrix call for suitable beneficiation techniques as the preferred option for quality upgradation. The good quality coking coals of the upper seams are fast depleting leaving behind the inferior quality lower seam coal. The lower seam coals presently being mined are mostly low volatile coking coal (LVC). They constitute about 50% of the total coking coal reserves in India. The beneficiation of Low Volatile Coking coals pose a major challenge and detailed R & D studies was taken up to study the beneficiation characteristics of these coals. The studies revealed that the liberation characteristics at coarser sizes are very poor and the coal is to be ground to finer sizes for liberation. The most important factor that determines coal cleaning efficiency is liberation of organic matter from mineral matter. To achieve liberation grinding is necessary as a result range amount of ultra fines (-0.063 mm) coal is generated. Presence of these large amount of ultrafine in the coal fines, often impose severe technical constraints affecting not only its floatability but also in the downstream treatment of the products like dewatering and cake formation particularly when it is beneficiating through froth flotation. In the present paper optimization of ultra fines (-0.063 mm) has been tried for a LVC coal of Jharia coal field for the better liberation and beneficiation of the above coal fines. This paper deals with the laboratory investigation of cathode ray tube (CRT) glass based glass foam, a relatively new product so called ?Geofil bubbles?. The main process engineering material properties of raw materials, such as particle size distribution, moisture content, density and specific surface area are shown. Then the preparation of raw cathode ray tube glass waste is presented including the following steps: crushing in impact crusher, grinding in laboratory scale ball mill, mixing, pelleting and sintering. We found that it was possible to produce foam glass (with proper mechanical stability and particle density) from the investigated waste CRT glass. The material characteristics of the final product strongly depend on the sintering conditions. Optimum conditions were determined particle size fraction was found to be 4-6 mm, temperature 800 0C, residence time 7.5 min. Keywords: waste CRT glass, grinding, pelleting, sintering, glass foam

Aluminum is produced by the Hall-Héroult process, which involves passing a current through a molten mixture of alumina dissolved in cryolite (Na3AlF6) to reduce the alumina to aluminum. This process occurs in an electrolytic cell comprising a steel shell lined with a carbon cathode and refractory bricks. After a certain period of operation, the carbon cathode deteriorates and is removed from the cell along with the refractory bricks. These removed materials are referred to as spent pot lining or ?SPL?. Typically, 30 Kg of SPL waste is generated for every ton of Aluminum produced. Globally aluminum smelters produce more than 500,000 tons of SPL each year. Even though SPL has a high fuel value (8000 to 9000 BTU/lb) and contains valuable metals, it is classified as a hazardous material due to its cyanide content and leachable fluorides. Various disposal/recycle techniques have been developed over the years for SPL but none of them is satisfactory. Thus, large quantities of SPL are still being dumped in landfills. In some countries, even the land filling of SPL is not permitted. The safe disposal of SPL thus remains a challenging problem to the aluminum industry and the search continues to find methods of converting SPL into a non-hazardous waste and/or recovering the valuable materials contained in the SPL. We have developed a process to produce hydraulic setting cements (eco-cement) containing a novel fluoride rich cementitious phase, from SPL by an energy efficient, low temperature clinkering route. A raw mix blend of SPL, lime/limestone, calcium sulfate and tailings sands based on a set of design criteria developed by us, is clinkered in a two stage process; 2 hours soak at 800 °C followed by clinkering at 1000 °C for another 2 hours, to produce a soft clinker. The SPL eco-cement is made by grinding the clinker to a fineness of 5000 cm2/g Blaine with 1% by weight borax as a set retarder. A good quality cement having as high as 20 % by weight of SPL in the raw mix (28 % by weight in the cement clinker) is thus produced. The physical properties of the SPL cements are found to be comparable to the Indian standard (IS) specifications for Ordinary Portland Cements (OPC). We have produced the cement in a few Kg batches and tested the reproducibility of results from batch to batch for further scale up. Over the decades, mine and mineral processing plant operations for the most part, have been found to have had adverse impacts on the environment. At the same time, mineral processing and mining operations produce mineral products that are indispensable to modern society. Thus, the sector has desirable and undesirable attributes simultaneously. The situation presents itself as a contradiction (i.e.) the mineral processing and mining operations are wanted by society, and at the same time unwanted by society. The existing methods of addressing the issues raised above have evidently not been very successful in reducing the opposition to new projects and to the related activities such as land acquisition. This paper attempts to show the relevance and applicability of TRIZ for addressing the issue. TRIZ, or Teoriya Rezheniya Isobretatelski Zadach, is a Russian acronym meaning Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. TRIZ is a powerful tool that can be usefully applied to resolve such contradictions, using resources usually available within the system of interest. Accordingly, this paper introduces the issue background, followed by an introduction to some key concepts of TRIZ such as the 40 principles, separation principles and directed evolution. The paper goes on to apply the 40 principles to two case studies. The results show that TRIZ could be a useful tool to generate potentially innovative and sustainable approaches. Its most appropriate position would be as a supplement to current decision-making procedures, and as a validation tool to review existing solutions for possible improvements. Newcrest has a strong history of growth over the past 20 years, yielding value from previously marginal ore bodies. We have grown regionally in Asia Pacific through our operations in Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, and also established a beachhead in West Africa. The company has a reputation of realizing value from large, low-grade deposits adopting step change approaches. Newcrest is focused on an overall strategy of gold, low cost, long life and moderate growth. Capability step changes play a large delivery role. They transition from a business offline-to-online approach as opportunities mature.
