Exploration at both Greenfields and Brownfields stages entails business risks of different nature and success rates. Greenfields exploration is exceedingly assumptive and the success rate of exploration or return on investment is low because exploration is an inherently risky business. Brownfields exploration on the other hand is less risky, as the geology is better understood, but generally speaking since the larger ore bodies close to surface have already been found the return is lower. In addition, most exploration at the Brownfields stage is generally more expensive due to extensive use of drilling. Surface geology mapping and expensive drilling have been key technical contributors to most exploration programs over the last two decades. However, as client expectations, logistics, target depths and complexity of exploration programs increase, there has been a growing emphasis on using geophysical techniques to complement other methods. Integration and optimization of various geoscientific disciplines is becoming more important in successful exploration programs of the future to reduce exploration risks, successful integrated exploration requires putting reliable geophysical parameters and correspondent petrophysical property contrasts into an assumed or conceptual geological model. This paper discusses a new multi-parameter geophysical methodology finalized in a unique conceptual geologic model which can be used either as a root model in grassroots exploration or as an efficient tool in Brownfields exploration to successfully find satellite orebodies of almost any size. The application of a new multi-parametric geophysical approach to Brownfields exploration is illustrated with examples from Manitoba, including a past producing nickel sulphide deposit in Lynn Lake and the Reed Copper deposit, currently in development.

The primary limiting factor for hoisting capacity from great depths is the self-weight of the typical steel wire ropes used for mine hoisting. Steel wire ropes possess properties making them very suitable for mine hoisting including high strength and durability, but have the negative characteristic of being relatively heavy in comparison with their strength. Also, as hoisting depths increase, the service life of steel wire ropes decreases due to the higher stresses and physical effects on the ropes. The significantly higher strength-to-weight ratio of synthetic ropes compared with steel ropes offers the primary advantage of hoisting a larger payload with a similar size rope and hoisting plant. The beneficial properties of synthetic ropes could be used to improve the overall economics of deep underground mining both for new deep shaft projects and for existing mining operations expanding to deeper orebodies. A research and development program has been initiated to evaluate the suitability of a fully synthetic rope for the mine hoisting application, including rope discard methodology and NDT testing. The three phases/projects are: 1) proof of concept with focus on coilability under load (successfully completed in 2012); 2) high speed and load durability optimization & NDT Development; and 3) in-situ mine trial.

In today?s emerging economy, pooling resources is a growing trend to reduce overall system costs. Two important resources of every maintenance department are repair shops and spare parts. In this work, we consider a system consisting of mine drills at multiple areas in a mine. In each area, a number of identical drills are operational. When a failure occurs, the defective component should be repaired in a designated repair shop. The failed component can be replaced immediately if a spare part is available. Otherwise, the drill is down until a component is repaired and put back into service. In this paper, the effect of pooling resources is examined, and the conditions under which it is beneficial to pool the resources are investigated. In addition, determining the optimal number of stand-by units, equipment or spare parts, in each case is of interest.

Net Present Value Impact of Discount Rate The Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method of valuations is universally used and accepted. The main criticism of the method is that it does not recognize the value of projects long life projects. This can be seen in the preceding graph where the present value of cash flows in later years are small for discount rates over about 10%. This graph covers a project that has a 25 year operating life. It is clear from the low height of the NPV bars at 10% and 15% in the last years of the project that an additional 25 years would add almost no value to total project NPV. As an example of this effect, an colleague undertook the evaluation of a pulp and paper project. The plant could be justified, but it was not possible to justify planting the trees as they took too long to grow and so had not appreciable NPV. The plant had to purchase wood to feed the plant.

ASTM E2905 describes a two-part standard for electromagnetic methods for preparation and examination of ring gear teeth in the mining sector for SAG and Ball Mill ring gear drives, including pinions? particularly on the addendum, dedendum, and root areas. This practice addresses the need to detect surface breaking flaws electronically and to have the ability to accurately size any surface breaking cracks found on cast and forged SAG and ball mill ring gear and pinion teeth faster and more effectively than other methods. Eddy-current surface arrays are seeing increasing use throughout the industry for the detection of surface breaking flaws in conducting materials. Example applications include examinations of pipelines, bridges, engines, aerospace structures, and any conducting material for surface breaking flaws including cracks. In addition, model-based methods are being used to size cracks accurately found in the addendum, dedendum, and the root of SAG and ball mill girth gear teeth. As visual interpretation of a surface breaking discontinuity on gear teeth is the normal analysis, the colors and 3D images that are provided with this technique, help with visualization and therefore are absolutely invaluable in such circumstances. This practice will help to standardize the use of this nondestructive testing approach.

The RockWorks EarthApps represent a free collection of 74 geology-related programs that read data from a built-in datasheet and create diagrams within Google Earth. EarthApps also includes programs that extract data from Google Earth. The programs that create diagrams include: point mapping (e.g. borehole locations), proportionally scaled icons (e.g. geochemistry), and strike & dip symbols. Line mapping utilities include; polylines, parabolas and pipelines. Polygon mapping programs include; thematic mapping (e.g. geology), mining claims, and public land survey sections. Image overlay capabilities include; draping (e.g. geologic maps) and time-based animations. Vertical image display capabilities are centered on either midpoints (e.g. drill-hole logs) or stretched between endpoints (e.g. cross-sections). The Flyover programs create virtual tours for site presentations. The cell-mapping includes a variety of algorithms (e.g. geochemical and geophysical contouring). The World Health Organization (WHO) considers contamination from oxyanions, such as selenium and arsenic, a global concern. While their elemental forms are toxic, the aqueous oxyanions are more so. These aqueous forms, which exist at a higher oxidation state, are the most common forms released during mining processes. Many technologies are capable of meeting the governmental discharge criteria for oxyanionic contaminants, but may possess limitations due to redox chemistry as well as the water matrices. An innovative technology was developed that can successfully reduce such aqueous forms generated during mining processes to a level below the discharge criteria. This paper discusses how an understanding of the sensitivities of this novel adsorbent towards these variations in water matrices and redox chemistry can be used to optimize its application.

Color enhances expression and communication in all physical objects experienced in life. Pigments provide color and in some applications have a specific additional function. Natural iron oxides are widely distributed throughout the world but only a few deposits are sufficiently pure and possess acceptable color and brightness properties to merit their processing into pigment form. Ochre, the common name for goethite ore, is the best and most under used material in the buff colored pigment market. The geological occurrence of ochre in the basal Shady Formation of the Cartersville Mining District (Georgia) is described. Exploration, processing, and product applications of New Riverside Ochre Company, Inc. are discussed. An overview of the worldwide pigment market is presented with emphasis placed upon the North American activity in iron oxide production and application. The purpose of this paper is to increase the awareness of ochre and its potential market in the colored iron oxide pigment industry, encourage research on the origin of ochre deposits, and stimulate interest in new applications of this unique substance.

The application of aluminum matrix composites, due to their unique properties, is significantly growing in the variety of industries such as aerospace and automobile. In comparison to other light metals, such as magnesium and titanium, aluminum is lower in price. These are the advantages that this metal dominates the others. In this research, first by applying the lost foam casting method, the SiCp/A356 composite was cast in the bottom and side gate conditions with 690°C and volume fraction of 10%. Furthermore, the effects of reinforcement particles (60 µm, 75 µm) were examined. The results present the particles distribution in the side gate methods is more homogeneous than the bottom gate casting method. Also, by increasing the particles sizes, the fading rate in the side gate are reduced from 22% to 19%, as well as from 26.4% to 25.4% in the bottom gate. For leach solutions containing primarily free cyanide, the silver nitrate titration method is a rapid and acceptably accurate means of analyzing for cyanide. However, in leach solutions containing elevated levels of copper, the titrimetric method significantly over-estimates the concentration of free cyanide and under-estimates the concentration of weak and dissociable (WAD) cyanide. The authors have developed a modified potentiometric titration method for determining WAD cyanide that overcomes issues with high copper levels in solution. The new MP-WAD method involves addition of a chemical ligand to the sample prior to silver nitrate titration to fully release cyanide bound to copper. Once released from copper, cyanide in solution is no longer affected by the presence of copper and titration results are quantitative rather than empirical. In multiple laboratory trials with synthetic solutions and complex actual leach solutions, accurate WAD cyanide measurements were achieved using the MP-WAD method. Analyses obtained with the new method were found to be within about ±10% of analyses obtained with the USEPA OIA-1677 WAD cyanide analytical method.
