The automated geology interpretation (AGI) tool has been developed in BHP Billiton to automate stratigraphy logging of drill holes, using any available quantitative data sets. At present, AGI is set-up to utilise geochemistry and mineralogy from infrared spectroscopic data to predict stratigraphy. Once the AGI tool is calibrated, results show that the tool is capable of automatically defining stratigraphy across all of the deposit types, encountered by BHP Billiton Iron Ore in the north-west of Western Australia. Accuracy of AGI at predicting stratigraphy is on average better than 75 per cent, with average accuracies exceeding 85 per cent for some deposit types. The AGI tool can deliver fast, accurate, consistent and objective geological interpretations.AGI is currently being implemented in BHP Billiton Iron Ore Exploration to streamline the drill hole logging process and allow geologists to spend less time defining stratigraphy at the drill hole level and more time investigating stratigraphy in 3D. The properties of iron ore sinter – commonly defined by measures of tumble strength, reduction degradation and reducibility – have a major impact on blast furnace performance. These properties are largely influenced by raw material properties, in particular the bulk ore composition. Despite this importance, there is a lack of quantitative data on the impact of ore chemical composition on iron ore sintering. This is surprising since the levels of Fe, SiO2, Al2O3, P, MgO and other elements, together with the nature of the minerals in the fine ore, play a major role in determining the abundance and type of high-temperature bonding phases that form during sintering. It is the abundance and nature of the high-temperature bonding phase(s) that directly influences sinter quality. This study combines in situ diffraction experiments in model sinter systems with laboratory-based compact sinter tests using natural ores to examine the links between iron ore composition and sintering temperature and their effects on standard metallurgical sinter quality test methods. Results help to establish the critical compositional and thermal parameters that control the bonding phase chemistry, which in turn influences the physical characteristics of the sinter matrix. World demand for iron ore is far from peaking, and the substantial price decline that has captivated commentators since early 2014 is not the result of widespread misreading by producers of the prospects for global market growth. Recent price movements provide little useful insight into the industry’s longer-term fortunes, apart from reminding mining companies that their businesses need to be robust against the volatility and inescapable cyclicality of mineral commodity markets. With lower and increasingly variable Fe grades in iron ore resources, the monitoring of Si, Al, Mg and other light elements to meet quality requirements is gaining importance in the iron ore beneficiation industry. The high cost per manual assay and associated manpower requirements often limit the frequency of shift composite samples and laboratory assays. Furthermore, the shift composite assays represent past performance of a plant but are not useful for immediate reactions to feed variations, detection of equipment malfunctions or process control. Automated online analysis of light elements radically reduces the cost per assay and provides repeatable, timely data for process analysis, control and optimisation.A light element online slurry analyser, based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) optical emission technique, will be presented. This paper discusses the analyser design for the iron ore industry and also reviews the performance of the analyser against the manual laboratory. Additionally operator safety, user friendliness and maintenance requirements are discussed.A case study will also be discussed in this paper. The sophisticated measurement technique has been implemented in an industrial automated analyser and sampling system to allow for slurry measurement for up to 12 sampling points. Magnetite orebodies generally means mining lower grade iron ores, crushing and grinding with significant energy costs in processing and the capital costs being significantly higher than for direct shipping ores (DSO). Overseas, the mining and processing of magnetite ores has a long history of production due to the lack of DSO deposits. This raises the question as to why the new magnetite projects have been so problematic and also whether there is a future for the long list of potential magnetite projects in Australia.The quality of the magnetite concentrate product is superior to most DSO products and the magnetite contains energy benefits when converted to hematite in sintering or pelletising. Hematite represents the vast majority of iron ore exported from Australia as the development and processing cost of magnetite is generally seen as a barrier to the development of vast magnetite resources. However, a number of magnetite projects have attracted a significant amount of interest and investment from large Chinese steelmakers.This paper compares the relative merits of the development of Australian magnetite and hematite ore from the point of view of the steelmaker, taking into account the factors that influence the capital costs of the development of the ore types and the relative costs of operating the process plants to treat these ores. By modelling the relative operating cost for the production of hot rolled coil in China for the two ore categories, the paper demonstrates the economic drivers behind the Chinese steelmakers’ large investments in the magnetite resources of Western Australia. It does this by estimating the potential value of magnetite concentrate to the steelmaker in the event that the maximum potential is realised by operating the blast furnace with a 100 per cent pellet burden.Under the conditions described, it was found that direct reduction (DR)-grade magnetite concentrate could command a price premium over 62 per cent Fe fines of up to 46 per cent (December 2014 on a cost and freight (CFR) basis). The corresponding premium for blast furnace (BF)-grade magnetite concentrate is 17 per cent, which demonstrates the dependency on grade.The capital expenses for a 14 Mt/a concentrate plant is estimated at US$3.1 B for BF-grade magnetite and US$3.35 B for DR-grade, with operating expenses at US$45 and US$50 respectively. The corresponding free on board price for a break-even net present value is calculated at US$82/t for BF-grade magnetite and US$90/t for DR-grade. The minimum long-term iron ore price (62 per cent Fe) that would be required to underpin such a project is estimated at US$78/t CFR for BF-grade magnetite and US$68/t CFR for DR-grade concentrate.Apart from the financial benefits, it is demonstrated that the use of magnetite concentrate in ironmaking has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 400 kg per tonne of hot rolled coil.CITATION:Mouton, A J J and Edwards, K, 2015. The predominant phase in most Marra Mamba, channel iron deposits and detrital iron ore deposits is goethite. Goethite abundant iron ore fines tend to have complex mineralogical associations and fine dissemination of gangue material. These ores are typically challenging to process using conventional beneficiation methods. With declining ore grades, there is a need to develop new processing routes for low-grade goethitic ores/fines.Comparative process amenability studies were carried out using two different processing options to recover iron with low alumina and silica content from a low-grade goethite-abundant iron ore fines (-2 mm) sample from the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The first option involved dehydroxylation at 350°C and 400°C, followed by grinding dehydroxylated samples to 100 per cent passing 106 µm and magnetic separation. The second option was processing raw sample by gravity separation using a Floatex density separator. Wet sticky iron ore poses particular difficulties in every aspect of the material handling process. Material hang-ups in bins, pipes and chutes; carry-back and spillage due to insufficient belt cleaning; clogging of screens; malfunctioning of crushers as well as rat holing of gravity reclaimed stockpiles are all predominantly due to the inherent cohesion and adhesion characteristics of the wet, sticky ore (Roberts, 1993). Limited understanding and quantitative measures on the stickiness of such a material significantly lower the mining operation efficiency.This research aims to investigate the cohesion and adhesion characteristics of the wet, sticky ore on physical modelling, experimental techniques and numerical implementation. Initially, the suitable bridging mechanism that contributes to the cohesive and adhesive forces within the iron ore material was identified (Hering, Martin and Stohrer, 1989; Rumpf, 1958). A cohesion/adhesion energy density factor based contact model was then introduced to describe the stickiness of the material. Secondly, an experimental system was proposed to directly test the stickiness of the material. Such a system is able to obtain both the cohesive/adhesive shear force and tensile force of the material at a specific moisture content. Lastly, the implementation of the proposed cohesion/adhesion model into the discrete element modelling (DEM) software was also discussed. A cohesion/adhesion calibration for modelling wet sticky iron ore in DEM was then conducted to ensure the material modelled in the simulation is reflective of the reality.From the study, understanding of the cohesion/adhesion characteristics of the wet iron ore material is significantly enhanced. Experimental and numerical outcomes can be directly applied for better designing or optimising the material handling processes that involve wet sticky iron ore. The formation of banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted high-grade iron ore deposits in the Hamersley Province, Australia has been debated for decades. Although a structural control on their formation is widely accepted, only the roles of large-scale structures (ie faults and folds) formed by brittle and ductile deformation have been considered to date. However, the deformation of multilayered sequences in the Hamersley Province (ie the Mount Bruce Supergroup), with their contrasting rheological behaviours, creates challenges for understanding the complex structural framework at regional to deposit scales, including the significance for mineralisation and orebody location.Our approach to understanding these complex relationships is based on an established principle of structural geology, which is to extrapolate microscale structures to deposit-scale structures and vice versa, supported by state-of-the-art 3D modelling techniques. Complexly deformed hand samples associated with the Mount Tom Price iron ore deposit (Hamersley Province, operated by Rio Tinto Ltd) have been analysed and visualised with 3D explicit (Move™, Midland Valley Ltd) and implicit modelling software packages (Leapfrog™, AranzGeo Ltd) and supported by microstructural investigations (optical and X-ray microscopy) and fieldwork.Our study shows that the deformation of BIFs in the central Hamersley Province is controlled by microscale chemical processes (ie dissolution precipitation creep) due to rheological differences between iron oxide and chert layers, contrasting fluid flow properties and layer thickness variations. These processes account for the removal of vast amounts of silica, its transportation by diffusion in the presence of a fluid and reprecipitation at low-pressure sites. It is the role of the exploration geologist to create wealth through the discovery, delineation and characterisation of economic mineralisation. This requires a critical depth of geological understanding.Unfortunately, the resource industry is well known for its cyclic nature. Many of the current generation of workers have only ever experienced the boom of the ‘super-cycle’ and are only just discovering the negative side to the business. For the case of the geologist and especially the exploration geologist, the magnitude of peaks and troughs are usually amplified and may become destructive to all parties. During the uptime a healthy stream of exploration good news becomes the staple diet of company releases, in particular those of junior companies attempting to bolster the share price. The geological knowledge and experience gained thus forms a significant and integral part of the value and therefore, future of a company. On the downturn it is often viewed that geologists are a luxury, an optional extra and a burden on the bottom line with companies entering a period of memory loss and myopia.Retention of geological knowledge however remains critical as projects, companies and cycles mature. Beyond exploration per se, this knowledge becomes both fundamental in de-risking and commercialising an asset (through development or divestment) and in positioning the company for cyclic or counter-cyclic opportunities.The growth and retention of this knowledge base is difficult to quantify in terms of direct value but becomes one of a successful resource companies greatest assets. At worst, its loss can lead to millions of investors’ funds wasted on missed opportunities, drilling, or poorly designed plant and mine.But the rocks are around for the longer haul and pay little notice to the vagaries of the scurrying of Man.This paper reflects on some of the authors own observations through 25 years of iron ore exploration, in why it is critical to always rigorously question the prevailing geological (mis)understanding and the technical and commercial benefits which that may bring, and looks forward to the future.CITATION:Kepert, D, 2015. The Kainantu Project is located within the New Guinea Thrust Belt in northern Papua New Guinea. The area has a long history of exploration and production, with the discovery of alluvial gold in 1928 followed by the discovery of vein deposits of gold and copper at Kora in the 1950s and the current Irumafimpa vein gold mine. Current resources on the Kora-Irumafimpa Vein System (KIVS) stand at 1.5 Moz Au, 5 Moz Ag and 217 Mlb Cu.Mineralisation in the region includes gold, silver and copper associated with mid-Miocene age mafic to felsic intrusions. The KIVS occupies a broad north-west-trending mineralised zone more than 2.5 km long and 200 m wide, with the Kora, Eutompi and Irumafimpa veins on the western side and the Judd and Upper Kora veins on the eastern side. Economic mineralisation occurs in two closely related events occupying the same strongly structurally controlled shearing (quartz-Au-telluride veins and sulfide Au-Cu-Ag veins with free Au) and is best described as a significant intrusion-related event with both epithermal and mesothermal facets that does not appear directly related to known porphyry Cu-Au systems as seen at the surface. Significant wolframite is associated with vein quartz of a slightly older age but also occupies the same shear system.The KIVS occurs within a larger mineralised area of approximately 5 × 5 km. It has complex multiphase intrusions, breccias and diatremes that are only partly delineated by drilling and comprises multiple occurrences of Au-bearing veins and porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. The area is considered to have high potential for extending the current resources and is being actively explored. Reaction products between high-temperature hydrothermal solution/uppermost mantle peridotite or lowermost crustal gabbro have been reported along Wadi Fizh of the northern Oman ophiolite; they are named as ‘mantle diopsidite’ and ‘crustal diopsidite’ respectively (Figure 1).The mantle diopsidite contains Cr-rich minerals like chromite, Cr-rich diopside (<2.5 wt per cent Cr2O3) and Cr-bearing grossular (<7.0 wt per cent Cr2O3). The chromites are varied in shape in the mantle diopsidite, euhedral to anhedral chromite grains contain globular inclusions of grossular and chlorite, and film-like chromite veinlets branch off from partially dissolved coarse chromite grains. In the crustal diopsidite, fine chromite grains are included in oscillatory-zoned skeletal uvarovite, especially in its high-Cr zones. The uvarovites are rich in rare earth elements (REEs). Direct laser ablation – inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) analysis of the primary fluid inclusions detected Na, but not K.Our detailed studies of Wadi Fizh diopsidites clarify that the high-temperature hydrothermal solution dissolves chromite grains at the uppermost mantle section and precipitates hydrothermal chromite at the lowermost crust section. In addition, REEs were mobilised in the hydrothermal solution together with Cr. The Middle and Lower Yangtze River metallogenic belt is one of the most important polymetallic resource areas in China. Iron oxide-apatite deposits, mainly distributed in Ningwu and Luzong volcanic basins, are a distinct type of iron deposits in this region. These deposits have a close temporal and spatial relationship with Mesozoic dioritic porphyries and are characterised by magnetite-apatite-pyroxene/actinolite ± anhydrite assemblage and large-scale sodic-calcic alteration.Widespread multiphase inclusions in pre- to main-mineralisation stage pyroxene and garnet in Meishan (in the Ningwu basin), Luohe and Nihe (both in the Luzong basin) iron deposits were trapped at ~780°C in extremely saline brines (~90 wt per cent NaCl equivalent), consisting of Na (13–24 wt per cent), K (7–11 wt per cent), Ca (~7 wt per cent), Fe (~2 wt per cent), Cl (19–47 wt per cent) and SO4 (3–39 wt per cent), based on petrologic, microthermometric, Raman spectroscopic studies and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses of natural fluid inclusions and synthetic analogues. The high Cl/Br, Na/B and S/B ratios in brine inclusions and the heavy sulfur isotopic values of anhydrite and pyrite (d34SAnh = +15.2 to +16.9‰, d34SPy = +4.6 to +12.1‰) suggest a significant contribution from both halite- and anhydrite-bearing sedimentary rocks. The involvement of evaporites caused the production of large amounts of high-salinity brines with apparently enhanced capacity to extract iron from the dioritic intrusions.According to their geologic features and the above characteristics, these iron oxide-apatite deposits are considered to be a special type of iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) deposits characterised by high contents of Na, Ca, Cl and SO4 in the ore-forming fluids. The Watershed tungsten deposit is located in the Hodgkinson Province of north Queensland, Australia. The deposit is hosted by Siluro-Devonian flysch-type meta-sediments of the Hodgkinson Formation, which were subjected to four major deformation events. Mineralisation has occurred syn- to post-D4 and is related to the intrusion of S-type granitoids of the Permian Whypalla Supersuite.Watershed is located within a regional NW–SE-striking melange zone composed of brecciated and intermixed arenites and shales. The major NW–SE-striking Tullah fault zone is situated in close proximity to the east of the deposit.The Watershed deposit occurs within a tightly folded upright anticline with NW-plunging fold axis. The anticline contains a major package of coarse-grained to conglomeratic arenite, which harbours the Watershed mineralisation. Several alteration styles occur within the arenites, of which Fe-poor calc-silicate alteration dominated by clinozoisite/epidote is the most significant. Less widespread but locally important alteration styles comprise garnet-dominated calc-silicate alteration, albitisation and sericitisation. The arenites are enveloped by unmineralised carbonaceous shales and shale breccias.Tungsten mineralisation occurs solely as molybdenum-poor scheelite and can be found as three styles: disseminated mineralisation in calc-silicate altered arenites, vein-style mineralisation with quartz-albite-scheelite veins and minor but high-grade mineralisation in albitised felsic dykes.Contact metamorphic rocks and geophysical data indicate the proximity of an underlying granitic body. It is believed that this granitic body was the main driver of the hydrothermal system generating the Watershed deposit. An early mineralisation stage caused the selective calc-silicate alteration of the arenites, while a second stage caused the vein-style high-grade mineralisation. The folded shales enveloping the arenites worked as an effective barrier that kept the mineralising fluids in a confined rock volume.The scheelite mineralisation at Watershed is open to depth, with a granite-hosted porphyry or greisen-style mineralisation anticipated below the current resource.CITATION:Griessmann, M and Williamson, J, 2015. It is important to understand skarn-porphyry transitions in order to use exposed skarns to look for associated and potentially larger porphyries. For such purposes, a good start is to understand the transition between porphyry and skarn in known deposits. In this contribution, we report the transition at Antamina, Peru, where skarns occur in and around a Miocene complex comprised of more than seven porphyritic intrusions. There are three types of skarn-porphyry relationships. The earliest intrusive phase, P1A, contains both endoskarn and porphyry-style quartz veins with secondary biotite halos. The porphyry quartz veins and endoskarns formed at the same time. Locally, the intrusion contains only endoskarn without porphyry quartz veins and is surrounded by exoskarns in carbonate wall rocks. In the third scenario, later porphyry (P2) intruding into P1A porphyry and skarns related to P1A contains abundant granular quartz veins and secondary biotite alteration but does not have significant endoskarn. The granular quartz veins also extend into earlier P1A skarns. The scarcity of endoskarn associated with P2 is related to the supply of Ca. The earliest P1A intrusion intruded into carbonates that supplied abundant Ca, therefore both endoskarns and exoskarns formed. In contrast, where the wall rocks of the later P2 intrusion are P1A or skarn related to P1A, there was little free Ca, therefore only porphyry-style quartz veins formed.CITATION:Chang, Z, Mrozek, S A, Meinert, L D and Windle, S, 2015. Private equity (PE) firms are comparatively free of mandatory requirements for the level and scope of due diligence applied prior to making investment decisions in minerals projects when compared to listed entities, sovereign funds or financial institutions adopting the Equator Principles (Equator Principles Association, 2013). While this freedom allows for flexibility, agility and innovation in making investment decisions, it can also expose PE firms to material risks that may impact their ability to successfully list the projects or attract later financing.Financial institutions and investors with mandatory due diligence and disclosure standards may refrain from investment in or acquisition of a project if it fails to meet various performance requirements. There are many high-profile projects that have suffered significant write-downs on book value after acquisition because specific non-mining issues were not adequately assessed. Thus, a PE firm may be left with an asset that is difficult to divest and incapable of securing development finance.PE firms can manage this risk by being aware of the growth trend in the adoption of ‘international standards’ in addition to host nation standards and legislative requirements. This paper outlines key issues for PE firms to address to maximise the chances of obtaining funding or successfully taking an exploration or mining project through to listing or divestment. Two steps are required: identification of gaps in performance and priority matters of interest to financial institutions and development of action plans to ensure that the priority requirements are met or capable of being met.A PE firm can set its project for success by understanding the social and environmental performance requirements of international standard financiers and by setting the project on the right path to meeting these requirements, and thus making it an attractive investment.CITATION:Allen, P, Stoker, P and Keogh, A, 2015. Traditional models employed to genetically link associated chromite and platinum-group elements have favoured crustal contamination as the primary process for inducing sulfide and oxide saturation. The association of chromite ores with crustal contamination is well established in the literature. However, in the 1970s (cf Irvine, 1973, 1975), Irvine demonstrated that crustal contamination was in fact problematic as a tool for inducing chromite precipitation in mafic to ultramafic magmas. His results are re-examined here, along with some attempts to reconcile them with the effects of adding Fe to the models. It is concluded that crustal contamination is indeed problematic based on phase relationships alone. However, the role of fluids as a compensating agent is evaluated, which may explain why crustal contamination may indeed facilitate oxide and sulfide precipitation.CITATION:Prevec, S A, 2015. Respect for mining in Botswana is long-standing. This article looks at Africa's most transparent mining regime and some of its ambitious plans. Botswana's mining industry value is forecast to average 5.2% growth from 2014-2018 with solid growth for the diamond sector and acceleration of coal production. Respect for the country's mining regime is maintained in the Fraser Institute 2014 annual survey where Botswana occupies the 26th position of 122 administrations. Botswana's transparency is illustrated by Mupane gold mine near Francistown, Ghaghoo diamond mine in the Gope area and the Morupule coal mine
