"The paper presents new theoretical and experimental results about mechanisms of disintegration of mineral complexes and structural transformations of the sulfide surface under high-power nanosecond electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP). The heated gas outflow from nanosecond breakdown channels of sulfide minerals under HPEMP is considered. It is shown that the gas outflow from channels can be an additional destructive factor in the processes of the electric pulse discharge disintegration of mineral complexes. It is shown that the effect of HPEMP changes chemical surface composition and, respectively, technological properties of pyrrhotite and pentlandite. Morphology and elementary composition of new micro- and nanoformations on mineral surface of pentlandite and pyrrhotite have been investigated using up-to-date methods of SEM/EDX and Scanning Probe Microscopy. Preliminary electropulse effect on mineral products before flotation allows producing optimal conditions for flotation separation of pentlandite and pyrrhotite owing to forming the new nanophases and defects on the surface of sulfides.IntroductionThe effectiveness of High-Power Nanosecond Pulses in the disintegration and liberation of fine disseminated mineral complexes and the recovery of micro- and nanoparticles of precious metals from refractory ores was demonstrated in [1, 2]. Possible mechanisms of selective disintegration were considered in [1-3]. It has been shown both theoretically and experimentally that electric breakdowns can play an important role in the nanosecond pulsed treatment of milled minerals (e.g., semiconductor sulfides and quartz with particle sizes of 100 µm to 2-3 mm) that are carriers of finely disseminated gold and other valuable components. Electric discharges in such minerals are accompanied by a destruction of integrity in the form of breakdown channels and the formation of a system of cracks around these channels [3]. The development of the domains of induced cracks around the channels is determined by the pressure of evaporated material in the breakdown channel. Upon an instantaneous energy release in a channel (nanosecond discharges), the change in its transverse size and in the gas density and pressure in the channel is determined by (i) the radial motion of the evaporation wave, (ii) the radial expansion of the channel, and (iii) the heated gas outflow from the channel. The evaporation wave moves with a speed on the same order of magnitude as the speed of sound (or greater) and travels a distance of around the initial channel radius, i.e., a much smaller distance than the breakdown channel length."

IN his paper entitled, Development of Hindered-Settling Apparatus, Dr. Richards has related the history of the development of the hindered-settling classifier and given illustrations of the several types of this apparatus which lie has designed.1 An earlier paper,2 Close Sizing Before Jigging, shows the nature of the hindered-settling phenomenon and the results which it produces. In the first-mentioned paper Dr. Richards describes the method of getting hindered settling and shows the relation that the constriction bears to the classifier. The question of proper ratios between the area of the sorting column and the area of the constriction opening Dr. Richards leaves open, aside from certain statements as to the ratios which have been found to give good results in practice. While working with a hindered-settling classifier of the type now in use at the Boston & Montana Reduction Plant of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. a number of interesting facts were brought out which have thrown considerable light on the question of proper ratio between the area of the sorting column and the area of the constriction and which will be made the subject of this paper. Free and Hindered Settling. -If a, mineral particle be dropped into a vessel containing still water, the particle will sink in accordance with the laws of free settling in water, which are as follows: 1. Of two grains having the same specific gravity but differing in size, the larger will settle in still water at the greater velocity. 2. Of two grains having the same size but differing in specific gravity, the heavier grain will settle at the greater velocity.

It is a pleasure to have the opportunity of being here today to discuss the application of horizontal filters in the metallurgical industries. The use of horizontal type filters has been limited in metallurgical plants. However, in the recent past there have been new designs of this type equipment which greatly broaden their field of application. Through their use in many applications, important economies can be achieved over more conventional methods. The first of the modern continuous horizontal filters was initially developed by Oliver United Filters as their scroll type horizontal filter. This was an outgrowth of the old Oliver Sand Table that was limited to very coarse, free filtering pulps containing no appreciable amount of fine particles. The sand table was rather limited in application. The later continuous scroll type horizontal filter provided for a reverse air blow after discharge which reslurried the heel remaining and permitted the filtration of pulps containing finer particles. In the manufacture of phosphoric acid by the ?wet? process, the filtration of gypsum from the strong acid presented an extremely difficult filtration problem due to blinding of the filter media caused by crystallization of the soluble salts contained in the acid. A filter which allowed for continuous cloth washing was required, and this led to the development of the continuous pan type, and travelling belt type horizontal filters which provided for this need. Among the filters developed were the Prayon by Engineering and Industrial Corporation of Luxembomg for use in their phosphoric acid plants. They are one of the largest manufacturers of phosphoric acid in Europe. The Dorr-Oliver Traveling Pan Filter was also developed by Mario Giorgini, Manager of Dorr-Oliver?s Italian subsidiary, for use with the Dorr Company?s phosphoric acid process. Basically, there are four existing types of horizontal filters in commercial use at this time: The scroll discharge non-pan type, the continuous belt type (Lurgi), rotary pan type, and the traveling belt type. The construction and principle of operation of these various filters will be discussed.

"In response to an increasing demand of anchored structures for underground space and transportation infrastructure in China, an innovative underreamed ground anchorage system was created. The novel anchorage system has provided more efficient functions with higher capacity at lower cost, because of the enlarged cylindrical body (known as ECB) sealed in capsule at bottom of anchorage. This paper presents the detailed structure of innovative anchorage system and its special features. To investigate the bearing mechanism of new anchorage, we evaluate its performance and failure mode based on the experimental results, and also indicate its strain-hardening load-displacement relationship. Unlike the shaft anchorages, it is identified no overall failure to be found in soil surrounding the underreamed anchorage. More importantly, the anchorage capacity is governed by the base resistance, which takes more than 80% of total pullout capacity resulting from the contribution of ECB. Finally a case history of anti-floating project introduces the new combined construction approach and procedure, which has provided the contribution to the quality control and cost efficiency.INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDThe construction boom over two decades in China has resulted in an increasing demand for underground space and slope stability. The infrastructures market requires the more efficient anchorage systems for retaining structures, resisting uplift forces and slope protection. The major concern focuses on gaining higher capacity and lower cost resulted from perfecting anchorage systems. There are three main anchorage systems designed to achieve the above objectives: ? single bore multiple anchorage system (Barley 1997), ? regroutable anchorage system (Smoltczyk 1991), ? underreamed anchorage systems (Xanthakos 1991). Generally, the concept ? comparing with the other two, can be more competitive due to its distinct advantages. To improve the performance and durability of ground anchorages under the complex geological conditions and diversified engineering requirements, a number of different underreamed anchorage technologies had been used, which included cone - shape anchorage described by Liao, Wu and Shu (1997) in Taiwan, Soilex anchorage developed in Sweden (Massarsch et al. 1997), Soletanche anchorage proposed in France, blasting anchorage used in Czechoslovakia (Hobst and Zajic 1986), jet-grouting anchorage innovated in Europe (Anon 1988), as well as deep mixing anchorage created in Japan (Cheng et al. 2000).The underreamed anchorage systems have the remarkable advantages compared to the shaft anchorage system. However, there are also some weaknesses inherent in the underreamed systems. For instance, the mechanical underreamed anchorage is unsuitable in sand or waterbearing ground, because the enlarged hole is easy to collapse, and it is hard to ensure the quality of anchorages. On the other hand, relying on the blasting in deep hole, the geometrical space and dimension of enlarged hole is uncontrollable, meanwhile, the continuous blasting operations may easily cause the serious ground deformation and the negative effects to the completed anchorages."

Two analysis tools which have been applied to problems in industrial Flotation processses are the application of kinetics and detailed mineralogical or liberation data, both on a size-by-size basis. The paper describes practical examples of the application of kinetics to examination of the entrainment recovery mechanism, the retardation of valuable minerals at the commencement of flotation sections and the resolution of problems related to valuable species with reduced rate constants at the end of sections. Examples of the usefulness of size-by-size liberation data for monthly composite samples of products from a concentrator are also described.

DOE recently funded 21 projects under the solicitation by its Environmental Restoration and Waste Management Division. This project is combining the expertise of an interdisciplinary team of researchers with that of three manufacturers to isolate nuclear waste storage sites using remote longwall mining. The concept is being pursued in Germany, too. This paper will present the conceptual approach to the project and discuss the problems in transferring longwall mining technology to nuclear waste containment.

THE burden a man can endure depends on its magnitude and the number of tunes it is applied, as well as on many other factors. The resisting power of steel likewise is dependent on many factors. The maximum load it can support indefinitely is much less than its possible momentary burden. A light load straining the metal far within its elastic limit, if repeated indefinitely, ruptures the metal. The magnitude f the stresses that may be alternately applied and removed without rupturing the material depends on the number of repetitions of the cycle; the intervening periods of rest; the thermal, electric, and magnetic conditions, as well as the presence of secondary stresses. While we are unable to formulate the law between the magnitude f repeated stresses necessary to produce rupture and the length of time during which these alternating stress may be applied before rupture, my experience is that the time increases as the magnitude of the force decreases, according to a law which, to a first approximation, is exponential. In other words, F = Ce-t where F = magnitude f alternating stresses; = time for which stresses are continued; C = constant, which' depends on the conditions under which the operations are carried out. It is quite probable that the same type of law holds for the magnitude of a continuous force and its duration. When a rod of steel is subjected to the blows of a drilling hammer several things happen. First, one end is struck by the hammer and the other end is driven into the rock, thus causing a bodily displacement of the entire material of the steel drill. The greatest stresses involved in this bodily displacement are located at the two ends of the steel and manifest themselves by the distortion of these parts. Second, after the blow has been delivered the steel drill, due partly to its own resiliency and partly to the resiliency of the rock, experiences a vibratory motion as a whole, this motion is quite similar to the bouncing of a rubber ball thrown violently upon a smooth pavement. Third, the free vibration of the drill is determined only by its own natural period of vibration. This motion involves all the characteristics f any vibrating body emitting sound. "A study conducted at 22 operating mines in the southern African region indicated that each mine employs about five management and improvement methods with roots in the manufacturing industry. All respondents reported the implementation of cost-saving initiatives, whereas 80% of the mines are affected by restructuring. TQM, Six Sigma, BPM, and TOC were found to be the most prevalent manufacturing management and improvement methods used. A mechanistic vs systemic evaluation of the suitability of these methods to bring about positive change in the industry suggested that complex, ever-changing mining systems are better served by a systemic flow-based approach, which is embedded in methods such as TOC, JIT, TPS, and Lean Production. These methods, however, lack industry presence, possibly because they do not effectively deal with the unique challenges associated with the mining environment. It is argued that successful mining business management and improvement depends on management’s ability to deal effectively with mining industry-specific requirements, the integration of the geologymining- plant system, and the implementation of systemic flow-based principles in all aspects of mining. IntroductionThe study aims to explore the use of manufacturing management and improvement methodologies in the southern African mining industry. Considering the unique challenges associated with mining operations, attention is given to the applicability of the most commonly used manufacturing methodologies in the tactical, operational, and strategic environments. Rare earth elements (REE) are vital components in modern electronics and green technology products. Supply is tight and global demand is expected to increase, leading to high risk for the economic and national security of countries largely dependent upon foreign supplies. Recycling of REE from consumer and industrial waste materials is a possible way to help meet demand. We have shown previously that biohydrometallurgy can play an economically and environmentally sustainable role in REE recycling, particularly if agriculture or food wastes are used to produce organic acid bioleaching agents. A challenge for organic acid-based bioleaching is the incomplete conversion of the carbon substrate to an optimal organic acid biolixiviant with high REE extraction capability from a variety of REE-containing feedstocks (e.g., mining wastes, magnets from end of life products, spent batteries, etc.). To help meet this challenge a metabolic model was developed for Gluconobacter oxydans to identify options for improving sugar conversion to organic acids. Model predictions were consistent with laboratory data for the microbial consumption of glucose and production of gluconic acid, and suggested that providing growth conditions with relatively high C:N molar ratios could result in lower pH biolixiviant production and thus improve bioleaching. The modern polarizing microscope with such accessories as cameras, infrared devices, reflectance and/or transmission photometers, indention hardness, and heating stage is used to characterize coal, coke, and other carbon forms. It allows characterization of coke by-products, such as tars and pitches and their insoluble residues. A useful product of the microscopic approach is the coal petrographic analysis which permits the prediction of coke strength carbonization pressure and volume change. Carbonization tests are expensive, time-consuming and require large amounts of coal. Tests on the coke show it to be strong or weak but give no indication of why. Petrographic analysis requires grams of coal and yields data that indicates why the coal produces coke of a given quality. Small samples from drill cores are sufficient for petrographic analysis. These data are also used to optimize blends for coke production. When coke-plant problems occur, ~he microscope can be used to check the coal blend proportions, as well as for weathered coal. Microscopy is useful in spore correlation work which may be a prerequisite to sound coal reserve estimates. Dispersed vitrinoid reflectance studies are used to determine the degree of organic metamorphism which serves to establish oil and gas deadlines. Tars and pitches are examined microscopically for the amount of normal solids as well as the size of undesirable carry-over solids resulting from pollution abatement practices in coke works. The microscope is also used to study coals for gasification and liquefaction.

The evaluation of historical goldfields has been common over the past 15 years, reflecting changing economic conditions, improvements in knowledge and technology and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins, which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold, have variable geometry and architecture and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation, since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. Mine records include documents such as plans, sections, reports, news cuttings, production tabulations, etc. A major advantage for the modern explorer is the capability of computer modelling to display this data in 3D. Historical records can give the explorer substantial information on various deposit characteristics, not least grade and geological continuity, geometry and architecture, mineralogy, metallurgical properties, bulk density and ground conditions. From an evaluation perspective, historical records can be used to support a Mineral Resource estimate, though its application will depend upon the quality and quantity of the data and judgement of the Competent Person. Effectively used, historical records can reduce geological uncertainty and focus evaluation efforts û thus reducing project risk.

The Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines and gave it authority and responsibility for conducting research on separation, recovery, and recycling of waste products and scrap generated by the mineral and metals industries and the consuming public.(1)1 It was apparent to our Nation's leaders even then that mineral resources, once mined, are irreplaceable and that the development of methods for recycling the values contained in wastes would be required to solve the problem of even¬tual scarcity, Estimates of the increase in per capita consumption of mineral resources in this country indicate that the consumption of metals, minerals, and fossil fuels by 1980 will be double that consumed in 1970 (2). Carpco has recently evaluated the use of various mineral processing techniques for secondary materials recovery. These applications include recycled foundry sands, plastics and secondary metals. This paper describes different recycling applications and the associated separation solutions. Results from extensive laboratory-and pilot-scale test work in each area are discussed. Industrial installations resulting from this test work will be presented. A detailed description of an industrial installation patented by Carpco for the recovery of plastic and metallics from current waste by-products is presented.

The mineral processing group at McGill University, in conjunction with the Pulp and Paper industry (Mechanical and Chemi-mechanical Wood Pulp Network), has adapted one of these techniques, column flotation, for the purpose of deinking wastepaper. This article describes the typical process of recycling wastepaper from a mineral processing point of view. It also presents results from McGill University’s flotation column test work at a Québec wastepaper recycling facility. IntroductionThe recycling of wastepaper has become an important and common process worldwide, including Canada which is now the world’s largest importer of wastepaper (CPPA, 1996). Much of the current drive to increase the utilization rate of recovered paper is a reaction to the solid-waste disposal problem that faces many Canadian and United States municipalities. The real problem in the disposal of solid waste is not the absolute amount of garbage that must be disposed of each year, but this amount in relation to available disposal capacity.Environmental restrictions on the creation of new landfill sites and incinerators (the two main options for disposal of municipal solid waste) have tightened the demand/supply balance in the solid waste disposal market. This shrinking availability of waste disposal sites in the face of increasing population with greater disposal requirements defines the Developed World’s solid waste crisis. Not only are there fewer disposal sites available, but the costs of using them is skyrocketing. These factors have increased government regulations mandating recycled paper content in newsprint. Conservation and environmental issues make the current drive for wastepaper recycling a real issue and business opportunity."

Ventilation modelling is used to evaluate ventilation system performance. This paper describes modelling to assess potential changes to a single entry longwall ventilation circuit to improve ventilation and gas management. The longwall panel is extracting a 215 metre face in a 1.5 metre coal seam at a depth of 900 to 1000 metres below surface. The 1.5 metre B seam is located approximately 25 metres below the main 3.0 metre A seam and the gas content of both coal seams is approximately 20 to 25 m3/t. The B seam is extracted prior to the A seam and the mine relies on fracturing of the overlying strata to induce gas emission from the A seam to reduce the gas content prior to mining. Longwall operations in the B seam are constrained by limited ventilation and high gas emissions. Due in part to statutory limits on gas concentration and air velocity, the average longwall production rate is approximately 700 t per day.Gate roads in the B seam are single entry, developed using road headers and supported with steel arches. Additional timber cog support is installed to reduce roadway closure from abutment loading. Due to the slow advance of gate road development, mine management were reluctant to consider significant mine design changes, such as two heading gate roads; therefore, the investigation focused on determining the extent to which ventilation and gas emission impacted on longwall production performance, while recommending short-term, low-cost actions to improve ventilation and gas management to support increased longwall production.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. Molten Salt electrolytic processes offer unique opportunities to extract and refine metals where gaseous or metallothemlic reduction, hydrometallurgical extraction and aqueous electrolytic methods are thermodynamically constrained. Production of aluminum and magnesium by molten salt electrolysis are well known commercial processes. Several other reactive metals, such as lanthanides and actinides, as well as beryllium and calcium, make use of molten salt processing for extraction and refining. This presentation describes the science of molten salt chemistry and electrochemistry for winning and refining of several metals. In addition, recovery of metals from waste process salts by molten salt reduction as well as oxidation have been discussed. Material issues in design of molten salt reactors have been included. Various applications have been presented through case studies. Experimental data have been included to justify the suitability as well as limitations of these specific processes.

To compete in Today's Market, Mine Managers have two, often conflicting tasks. They are to improve productivity, allowing the mines to compete in our world markets and to improve the environment in which our miners must work. To Maintain and improve the environment to ever increasing acceptable levels requires monitoring. In years passed this required considerable labor, which was provided by the Ventilation Department. They continuously took manual samples using hand-held instruments, sampling gas level such as CO for fire and methane for explosive risks. In addition they took continuous air velocity readings with hand-held instruments which allow them to calculate the ventilation air movement in each area of the Mine. This manual gathering of information was not only expensive and slow but marginal at best. It was marginal because the gas sampling was sporadic rather than continuous, as sample reading taken in one part of the mine would likely not be repeated for another 8 hours. If problems did occur, they likely went unobserved until they reached crisis proportion.

The process of converting iron ore (principally Fe,03 or Fe30,) into iron carbide (Fe,C) to be used as feedstock for steel-making yields complex mixtures of several Fe-containing compounds as a function of processing conditions. In addition to the above compounds (hematite, magnetite and cementite), the mixtures typically contain wustite (FeO) and metallic iron(Fe). Mossbauer spectroscopy has been developed into aquantitative analytical method for monitoring the degree of conversion to carbide from samples periodically extracted from a fluidized bed reactor type of pilot plant. Calibration of absolute quantities of the above five compounds is based on standards prepared from known mixtures of the high purity individual phases. The PC-based spectrometer allows fitting of the well-known spectral components of each of the five phases, the resulting spectral areas then being compared with the calibration curves via PC software to yield the weight fraction of each. Emphasis has been placed on standardizing and simplifying the analysis procedure for routine use in an industrial environment.
