This paper is written to convey the latest developments in compact bucket wheel excavators (BWE's) operating in medium-hard rock and will serve to indicate that BWE and compact machines in particular do in fact have application in materials other than loose sandy soils and soft rock. A recently run extensive three month field test in hard marl, which was previously considered too hard and difficult to be handled by a BWE, is used as an example to explain some of the design requirements and problems associated with digging harder materials.

This paper describes a new magnetic separator integrating dynamic permanent magnetic force, gravity and flow dynamics to enhance the quality of the iron concentration. This equipment can increase the grade of concentrate by controlling the formation of magnetic agglomerations to reject most gangue. Test results indicates that the compound force field separator can be applied in improving the quality of iron concentrate and has a wide range of potential market applications. "The ever increasing demand for cleaner steels with low inclusion content has highlighted the limits of our current knowledge for controlling and predicting inclusion agglomeration and removal during liquid steel processing. Key knowledge gaps in this area result from the complex nature of the problems associated with measuring and visualizing the phenomena studied. Confocal scanning laser microscope (CSLM) allows for continuous in situ observation of micron-size samples in real time, at high resolution, under conditions relevant to the steelmaking process. This paper summarizes some of recent CSLM applications in our laboratory to illustrate the methods of analyzing transient behavior. The reaction between inclusions and slag is given as an example. The dissolution rate of calcium aluminate inclusions in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 slags has been studied at elevated temperatures: 1500, 1550 and 1600°C as well as thermodynamic/kinetic analysis. It is found that total dissolution time decreased with increasing temperature. The rate limiting steps are discussed. It is shown that the diffusion through a product layer is responsible for dissolution at 1500°C. At higher temperature, dissolution is most likely controlled by both boundary layer diffusion and chemical reaction at the slag-inclusion interface. In this paper, the evidence for and against the theory will be critically examined and repercussions of the theory to steel refining processes will be discussed.INTRODUCTION Inclusion formation during liquid steel refining is an unavoidable consequence of current ladle steelmaking processes. The nature and quantity of the inclusions formed in steel is critical in steelmaking, as it affects both productivity through clogging, and downstream physical properties of the steel. It is therefore crucial to better understand and control the formation, agglomeration and dissolution behaviour of inclusions in a slag in order to improve the removability of inclusions from liquid steel. Most research (Sandhage & Yurek, 1988; Sandhage & Yurek, 1990a; Sandhuge & Yurek, 1990b; Sandhuge, 1991) relevant to the kinetics of inclusion removal has been obtained by using a technique where simulated inclusion material (ceramic rods) is dipped in slag and the dissolution rate is measured. While much has been learned using this approach, the difference in scale from bulk materials to inclusions is likely to have a significant bearing on the dissolution kinetics of inclusions in a slag and will certainly result in a very different influence of capillary effects. Further, the data obtained using an indirect (dip test) procedure relies on a comparison of the initial and final conditions of a sample rather than in-situ observation which can be achieved in a confocal microscope in real time."

Many large underground mines using the open stoping method have changed their primary applications of consolidated rock fill (CRF) to paste or consolidated hydraulic fill due to considerations of demand in infrastructure and equipment, system reliability, backfill capacity and material sources. However, some smaller or even large mines still use or consider using CRF for backfill purpose due to factors such as capital expenditure, availability or suitability of other fill types or in some cases local regulatory requirements. As demands on CRF applications diminish among major mining companies, there is a lack of recent literature on application of CRF to open stoping in design and operation. There are several methods being used for fill strength design. Results from these methods have been successfully applied to paste or hydraulic fill. However, the design strength for CRF is much higher than that determined by use of these widely accepted methods. In operation, CRF preparation and placement have significant impacts on the quality of placed CRF and therefore the mining performance. This paper reviews the current fill design methods and their applications to open stoping with presentation of the bench marking data, presents fill failure cases and various CRF preparation and placement arrangements and discusses quality assurance and control programs.

"Recent advances in new computational modelling techniques such as Lattice-Boltzmann and Dissipative Particle methods offer the prospect of simulating complex fluids such as colloidal and dense suspensions in industrial processes. They are referred to as mesoscopic methods since they lie between molecular dynamics at a microscopic atomistic scale «lO-9m) and traditional macroscopic CFD methods (> 1O-2m). The models behave like a 'coarse-grained' gas consisting of fictitious interacting particles, which are much larger than the real molecules of the actual fluid they represent. Inter-particle forces are set so that the collisions collectively mimic the phenomenological transport properties and flow of the underlying fluid at a macroscopic scale.Much of the developmental work to date has focused on laying theoretical foundations based on thermodynamic and kinetic theory. Successful applications include predictions of macroscopic transport properties of complex fluids and flows in porous media and filters. With the constant increase in computational power, these mesoscopic methods are now sufficiently developed to determine their suitability to simulate complex fluid flows in real industrial processes. This work describes the application of meso scopic methods to the stencil printing of solder pastes in the assembly of electronic components. The aim of this work is to assess the ability of these methods to study the transport mechanisms of individual solder particles suspended in the flux solvent as they enter and fill the micro-apertures of a stencil. This paper demonstrates the coupling of such mesoscopic methods to continuum CFD methods to predict the flow of dense suspensions (i.e. solder paste) in industrial processes."

Mine ventilation analysis is an engineering discipline that can be considered a branch of the body of science known as network analysis. Likewise, the group of engineering procedures known as the critical- path method (CPM) is considered a branch of network analysis. It is therefore not surprising that mine ventilation network analysis and CPM have many similarities. These similarities are useful in analyzing several types of mine ventilation problems and will be utilized in this paper. The analogy between the free split in a ventilation circuit and the critical path in a scheduling network has been recognized by Owili-Eger (1973). While this was recognized as a property of a general ventilation network, many important applications to controlled- splitting problems also exist. The mathematical procedures necessary to apply CPM and network methods have previously been presented (Wang, 1981; Wang, 1982). This paper will illustrate the implementation of these methods by application to mine ventilation networks.

MANY questions arising in the work of the mining engineer may be solved quickly and with sufficient accuracy by the methods of descriptive geometry; but, unfortunately, this subject is more often considered from a mathematical view-point than as an effective tool. for solving practical problems. Some of the principles involved are merged into the ordinary operations of mechanical drawing, and are used unconsciously by the engineer in his every-day work. The rest are stowed away on the book-shelf with his forgotten or rarely-used college text-books. One reason for this condition of "innocuous desuetude " may lie in the unfortunate and often cumbersome notation which it has been found necessary to introduce. If some of these principles can be recalled to the engineer's attention in terms of every-day use they may prove of practical bearing. Recently, in talking with several mining engineers, I used some of the drawing-room methods of a machine-designer, to the evident surprise of those around me. These men were perfectly familiar with the methods, but their application to mining-work had not occurred to them. At their suggestion the present paper is offered, not in any way as a treatise, but merely to suggest a certain point of view, in hope that it may lead others far more familiar with mining-problems to pursue the subject further. I. To FIND THE STRIKE. As the simplest and most fundamental problem, let it be required to find the strike of a vein when the location and elevation of three points on the outcrop are known. Mining ‘as usual’, until the most recent decades has resulted in limited landform planning and a general lack of mine waste landform design. Material characterisation, mine planning and dedicated professionals undertaking these tasks were rarely available or in place at the majority of mines. This has led to landform instability, erosion, sediment and poor quality water emanating from mine landforms. In many cases rehabilitation and reclamation failed and these sites have ‘landform features’ that are difficult to relinquish or leave and have little or no apparent land use. In many cases mined landscapes around the world have resulted in a less functional and degraded environment, with deleterious impacts on surrounding ecosystems.This situation is now slowly being addressed, as global companies, academics and practitioners and their organisations have started to exploit the ideas from an integration of earth sciences and mining through the application of planning software dedicated to the design of landforms.This development has had its genesis primarily in the United States. We suggest that process has been driven, in recent decades, by the application of resources in response to the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), (USA Congress 11 December 1980) and other mine reclamation legislation enacted by federal and states regulators in the USA. The combining impact has seen a huge transfer of capital back from the public purse and ‘potentially responsible parties’, into abandoned mines to affect control, remediation, and reclamation/rehabilitation of those mines.Given this investment in rehabilitation and reclamation, people engaging in the business of landform planning have had the opportunity to address landform reclamation of historic and active sites. The skills of engineers and scientists with improved technology, waste rock characterisation and modelling tools have been combined resulting in the evolution of landform design and in mine planning of active mines. This has delivered cost-effective, sustainable mine closure designs for over 30 years. Integration of mine design with an understanding of geomorphic principals and the natural landscape, coupled with waste and soil characterisation, yield a positive result. Recently work has been applied across large and small-scale projects by companies. As these processes develop, ideas and concepts are evolving that active mines, or mines in the early planning stages, could use to help reduce double handling, and in the long run reduce overall project and closure costs, more effectively attain the desired final land use, and enhance the industry’s reputation and licence to operate.CITATION:Leidich, T,?Lacy, H?and Van?Zyl,?M,?2014. Aiming at the subjective impact caused by subjective weighting method in the establishment of rockburst risk attribute identification and prediction model, the combined weighting method was introduced to eliminate the influence of unreasonable weight of each index. Eight discriminant indexes affecting the risk of rockburst were selected. Through the literature review, relevant rockburst cases were collected and 8 index rockburst sample sets were established. A variety of machine learning methods were used to analyze the feature importance of discriminant indexes in the samples, and then to determine the objective weight values of different methods. Combined with the subjective weights determined by the Analytic Hierarchy Process, the combination of weights were successively carried out. Based on the attribute recognition theory, the combination weights with different objective weight methods were established to identify the rockburst risk attributes, and verified by the confidence criterion. The results show that the objective weight value determined by the feature importance analysis of machine learning reduces the subjectivity of the weight of Analytic Hierarchy Process method, improves the prediction accuracy, and makes the prediction result closer to the fact.

"This study aims to demonstrate the capacity of the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to model and simulate fracture in brittle rock, capture the crack propagation process and determine crack propagation rates for various levels of external loading. In the numerical experiments reported here, a macroscopically homogeneous body of brittle rock, containing a single pre-existing crack, was subjected to tensile stress loading. Simulations concerned with model I crack growth process in 3D were carried out. The process of fracture has been observed under various steady state and dynamic conditions. The numerical results obtained reproduce qualitatively and quantitatively a variety of observed fracture phenomena. Specifically, this study examined the onset of cracks, single dominant cracks that grow across the specimen, crack bifurcations and branching. The density of fractures that can be nucleated and grow to a significant size with and without arresting each other, crack growth speed and stress distribution, all have been consistently and systematically analyzed. Suggestions on potential future developments are made and discussed.INTRODUCTIONFracture and failure mechanics are very important in mining, manufacturing, materials processing, mineral processing, civil and mechanical engineering, and many other disciplines of science and engineering. Yet, due to the complexity of fracture phenomena, no theoretical models of broad applicability are currently available (Bieniawski 1967). The simulation of crack propagation is therefore considered an open question in numerical rock mechanics. Although, a significant body of experimental research on fracture of materials was carried out since the early days of fracture mechanics (circa 1940s) (Poncelet 1946, Mott 1948), often in parallel with the development of fracture mechanics theories as well as with the development of experimental and observational techniques themselves, the experimental results were often done on particular classes of material such as glasses and other very brittle materials. Indeed, a number of specific experimental observations on the behavior of growing cracks in brittle materials were made in the 1940s for which generally accepted explanations based on physical principles are still lacking. Likewise, quantitative numerical modeling, based on both continuum and discrete methods, as a basis for understanding dynamic crack growth is still in a preliminary stage."

Donnan Dialysis uses ion exchange membranes to extract and separate cations. The driving force is provided by differences in chemical potential, rather than by electric fields or pressure. A Donnan Dialysis based process to recover lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, and organic acid lixiviant from recycled lithium ion battery cathodes is under development. In this paper we present a model of Donnan Dialysis and results of simulations of the aforementioned process. The simulations show that 170 m2 of membranes can process 1000 L of leachate ([Li+] = 0.285 M, [Co2+] = [Ni2+] = [Mn2+] = 0.095 M, pH 2) in two days and recover 94.1% of the lithium (as lithium carbonate), 99.4% of the transition metals (as mixed sulphates ready for solvent extraction), and all of the organic acid using 423 mol of H2SO4 and 268 mol of KHCO3.

Abstract In a review of the application of electrical logging in Canada, examples are .given of long and short distance correlations by means of the electrical logs. The use of MicroLogging for the determination of permeable and porous formations is explained. The question of log analysis for the quantitative determination of fluid saturation and porosity is .discussed. An example is provided to illustrate the significance of the resistivity gradient. The advantages of the new method of the Laterolog are shown, chiefly for the case of wells filled with high-salinity mud. Introduction Electrical logging techniques developed rapidly in Canada at the time an intensive drilling activity started for the exploitation of the Devonian series in Alberta, namely, at the beginning of 1947. The conventional service was soon thereafter supplemented with the latest technica1 improvements. Canada has been among the first regions to take advantage of MicroLogging*, which has proved a most powerful .tool for the investigation of permeable and porous formations; also, the more recent development known as the Laterolog has ?been introduced in Canada. The Laterolog provides a better determination of .the formations, particularly in the case of salty mud where the conventional logging is greatly handicapped. The various methods of electrical logging are now commonly known in oil industry and have been described in numerous publications ( 1) ( 2) (3).

Emissions from pyrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates are usually subjected to wet scrubbing. The washing sulphuric acid so produced contains up to 0.2 g/L of rhenium, which is recovered by solvent extraction in the form of crude ammonia permeate (NH4ReO4). The mother liquor, obtained from the sulfuric acid wash, contains up to 35 g/L of rhenium and significant amounts of impurities. Crude rhenium salt is commonly processed by double recrystallization to produce marketable salt. A ton of high grade NH4ReO4 can be produced using 3.0-3.5 m3 of mother liquor. We propose an efficient technology of mother liquor pre-treatment aimed at removal of water-soluble organics with subsequent electrodialysis. Electrodialysis of mother liquor in a multichamber electrodialyzer resulted in the production of pure rhenium acid, from which a marketable NH4ReO4 is precipitated using ammonia solution. Multiple steps of recycling consisting of dissolution of NH4ReO4 salt, rhenium acid production from NH4ReO4 salt by electrodialysis and precipitation of NH4ReO4 from rhenium acid made it possible to upgrade the purity of obtained rhenium compounds by 1-2 orders of magnitude. A rhenium metal powder of 99.997% purity was produced by high-temperature reduction of high-purity NH4ReO4 with gaseous hydrogen. Rhenium metal powder of high purity can be produced from sulfate solutions of NH4ReO4 by non-platinum anode-based membrane electrolysis processes also. Environmental geologic maps of the Wilcox and Jackson-Yegua lignite belts of the Texas Coastal Plain delineate land areas on the basis of their natural characteristics. Criteria used to define map units include substrate, soil, topography, geologic process, vegetation, and land use. The maps are useful in planning and reclamation of lignite mines and in meeting the requirements of State and Federal surface mining laws. Specific applications include identification of land capability, recharge areas and geometry of aquifers, flood-prone areas, areas that may qualify for prime farmland status, and other areas sensitive to lignite mining.

As mining method s and technology advance and the demand for better and more communication services increases, traditional systems quickly reach their limitations. It is under these circumstances that we turn to fibre optic communication systems.Fibre optics is a mature technology which is finding its way into more and more applications worldwide. A fibre optic communication system can provide a level of performance unattainable by conventional cable systems yet ca n be cost competitive. As is well known, fibre optics provides a noise-free, noise-immune, high -capacity communications channel. Glass fibre, being dielectric and non-sparking, is an intrinsically safe communications medium. Clearly, it is ideally suited to the harsh environment present in a mine.From a communication systems point-of-view, the topology of a deep mine is unique. The objective of the systems engineer is to implement a total communications capability throughout this wide spread area. Ideally all classes of services should be accessible throughout the network-an integrated network concept. Recent advances in communications technology combined with fibre optics make this realizable."

For a given flotation system, the rate-controlling step in fine coal flotation can be the attachment of bubble to the fine coal particles. The probability of attachment depends upon the surface characteristics and the collector adsorption on the coal particle surfaces. Thus, to further improve the flotation rate and selectivity is to alter the distribution of hydrophobicity on coal particles efficiently by applying the effective means of collector dispersion. In order to enhance the combustible recovery and selectivity of fine coal flotation, and lower the amount of collector used in the fine coal flotation processes, four modes collector dispersion/addition techniques are tested. They are direct liquid addition in pulp (mechanical agitation), ultrasonic energy dispersed collector into pulp, atomized collector into pulp and gasified collector transported by air and formation of collector-air bubbles in pulp. The effect of four collector dispersion/addition methods on the floatability of -600 µ m (-30 mesh US sieve) coal samples from four ranks of coals were studied. The ultrasonic energy dispersed collector and atomized collector flotation processes enhance flotation yield and most significantly improve the kinetics of fine coal flotation. The gasified flotation process can increase the selectivity of separation and decrease the collector consumption due to starvation flotation is achieved in this process. The flotation efficiency of gasified collector process is as high as that of conventional flotation. It is because that the effect of the decrease in the combustible recovery is offset by the increase of selectivity. In addition to flotation experiments, induction times of bubble attachment to the bed of fine coal particles for four ranks of coals are measured.

Civil engineering infrastructures are often subjected to different types of natural and mechanical activities. These influences may result in serviceability or even in stability of structures due to material deformations, increased water content within the materials used or the formation of internal or adjacent cavities that may threaten the infrastructure. Construction practices can lead to development of such defects in the form of cavities. In civil engineering it is crucial to detect these variations in material properties and to detect the presence of defects. However, as they are often hidden from view, these attributes may be difficult or impossible to target with traditional testing methods. For these reasons rapid geophysical methods, such as ground penetrating radar (GPR), are increasingly being used. At the University of Queensland (UQ) GPR is used for detection of voids and cavities which have been caused by an over excavation of the earth pressure balance machine (EPB) operating in a closed mode.A variety of numerical simulations using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods and preliminary experiments have been carried out in order to specify information about the nature, type, size, location and other characteristics of targets to be detected by GPR. In doing this the difficulty of interpreting GPR data, which is mainly due to the complexity of the factors involved in multiple possible solutions of the observed features, can be overcome.

Determination of the sampling constant and liberation diameter are of importance when applying the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE) equation to optimise sampling protocols. The method for the direct determination of the sampling constant is based on the æGy 50-pieceÆ experiment and variants thereof, which is generally known as the heterogeneity test. In the coarse gold environment, the heterogeneity test is prone to poor repeatability and bias due to the very heterogeneity that it aims to quantify. A key issue is the large sample mass that can be required in the coarse gold environment, which may reach 1 t or more. The heterogeneity test often provides an evaluation of the background gold grade heterogeneity, but understates that of the high-grade coarse-gold component. This is because the total mass of fragments is usually too small to represent the mineralisation. Despite this relatively well-known problem, heterogeneity tests are often undertaken on deposits where the presence of coarse gold is ignored, not fully realised or vastly understated. Sampling types and protocol designs are frequently based on poor quality data that do not match the characteristics of the orebody. Mengzi Mining and Metallurgy Co, Ltd (MMMC) polymetallic ore contains recoverable amounts of tin, lead, zinc, pyrite and other valuable minerals. With the change in orebody, the run-of-mine (ROM) ore changed from lead zinc rich ore to tin rich ore, where the current ROM ore contains 0.45–1.25 per cent tin, 20–25 per cent sulfur, and 0.20–0.35 per cent copper. The previous processing flow sheet was designed to recover lead zinc rich ore and it is clearly not suitable for recovery of the current tin rich ore, where the tin was already overground and tin recovery was only 50.19 per cent. The Mengzi Mining Company has recently modified the concentrator circuit by incorporating rod mill and high efficient Derrick fine screen. As a result of the improved classification efficiency, the overgrinding of the tin ore was minimised and the recovery of tin was improved by 20.71 per cent, ie from 50.19–70.90 per cent. "High pressure vapor/solid reactions offer an opportunity for novel synthesis and processing of thin film materials and structures for electronic, optical, and magnetic applications. In this paper we review the use of two high pressure techniques that operate from 25 to 1000 atm (2.5 to 100 MPa) to fabricate thin film oxide structures from Si1-xGex deposited on Si wafers. High pressure synthesis enables temperature-independent control of reaction rates in the oxidation of this multicomponent semiconductor system and hence offers the opportunity to form thennodynamically metastable Si1-xGex<h from the alloy. The thermodynamics of the Si-Ge-0 system are reviewed and a method is described that utilizes selective chemical reduction (via H2 gas) of Si1-xGcx<h to form Ge precipitates in an SiO2 matrix. IntroductionAlloys of Si1-xGex grown epitaxially on Si substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CYD) and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) have been used to create high performance microelectronic devices1. These devices show improved performance over conventional Si technology because they exploit the Si/Si 1-xGex band-gap discontinuity and take advantage of higher hole mobilities in the Ge containing alloys. While a range of devices based on heteroepitaxial systems have been demonstrated, the Si1_xGex alloys are of particular interest because they are most closely compatable with standard Si device processing. One disadvantage of Si-based materials systems is that they are not typically useful emitters of light. This is important since the use of light (rather than electrons) for transmitting and processing signals into, out of, and within Si-based microelectronics would represent a major technological advance in microelectronics-based communication and computer technologies.
