A foundation value engineering redesign is a collaboration between the project owner, original design team, general contractor, foundation contractor and redesign team. Without the acceptance and collaborative effort of all the stakeholders, the redesign process is doomed to failure. For the addition at the Hackensack (New Jersey) University Medical Center (HUMC) we had just such a collaborative effort for the drilled shaft redesign. For a successful redesign effort, the collaboration between the foundation contractor and their redesign team needs to fully exploit the contractor’s specific equipment and experience and convey how to apply this to the project as a whole to ensure everyone is confident that the project design goals are being met. For the HUMC project, applied load testing of the drilled shafts (bi-directional and lateral) were used to provide ultimate geotechnical design values for the redesign effort. By utilizing the contractor’s preferred equipment and the redesign team’s testing and application expertise, the redesign collaboration was able to enhance a good design and make it into a great project.

"Flotation process applied for concentration of unoxidized ferruginous quartzites by PJSC Mikhailovsky GOK (MGOK) is based on wet magnetic separation of strong magnetic minerals. However quality of the resulting concentrate (Fe65-66%) is insufficient for production of metallics. Quality upgrade of magnetite concentrate via flotation has been implemented by MGOK to produce premium quality magnetite concentrate.Flotation is a challenging process due to sensitivity to varied amounts of reagents, fine and coarse mineral ratio, particle contact (retention) time and temperature of feed. Tomah’s PA-14 reagent (USA) has proven efficient for application in flotation of MGOK’s magnetite concentrate.Objective of this work is to select and prove applicability of selective agents for flotation upgrade of magnetite iron ore concentrate.Series of flotation tests has been carried out with application of new highly selective collecting agents produced by Akzo Nobel (Sweden), Clariant (Germany) as well as Akzo Nobel’s and Tomah’s cationic collector mix to improve performance efficiency of flotation process. Tomah’s flotation agents and Akzo Nobel’s Lilaflotproved to be the most effective for purposes of concentrate quality upgrade to Fe69.0% via flotation.Testing Method: Following scientific research methods were applied for testwork: system analysis, mathematical statistics, observation, comparison, trial (experiment).To determine key process factors a series of pilot tests was carried out. Most of the testwork was performed by PJSC Mikhailovsky GOK’s Central Process Laboratory.Work Results:-optimized flotation performance modes were defined to ensure production of three types of low-silica concentrate, i.e. containing SiO25%, SiO24% and below SiO23% by weight. Most efficient selective agents applicable for flotation have been defined. Mixture of higher aliphatic amines has proven to intensify selective flotation of quartz. It enables higher yield of chamber product maintaining desired quality of concentrate.Achieved process operation and performance factors have been revaluated.Value for Advancement and Expansion of Mineral Processing:Flotation of concentrate has enabled expansion of PJSC Mikhailovsky GOK’s production capacity, improved production quality, helped to maintain sustainability and competitive advantage of the company."

As a producer of gold and platinum, Colombia is most emphatically an important country. Last year it produced 656,000 oz. of gold-twice as much as any other country in South America, in fact accounting for a third of the production of that continent. In platinum, world data for 1941 are not available, but in 1939 Colombia exported 39,000 oz., apparently ranking fourth among the world's producing countries, being exceeded only by Canada, Russia, and the Union of South Africa. Colombia was always a mining country. Centuries before the Conquest, Indians mined gold, copper, silver, salt, and emeralds. The Spaniards simply intensified mining. The Bank of the Republic states that from 1493 to 1940 52,177,427 oz. of gold was produced by Colombia, and official Chocó statistics show that about $60,000,000 worth of platinum was mined between 1908 and 1941. These figures are impressive indeed considering that only rich pockets and surface showings were mined by the ancients.

Blast furnaces are the tools of men, and it is men who have made them great. Here is presented the story of the Ironmakers-the men who first poured hot metal into what would someday be the sinews of a nation. W HEN the Jacobean merchant adventurers bade farewell to the first ship of colonists sailing for the new land, they instructed them to direct all their skill and energy to grow silk worms in Virginia. The adventurers felt sure that they could flood the market with highly priced and much desired goods like silk, sugar, tea, and indigo. They were also convinced that they would fill the needs of the mother country for iron. Early iron production in the colonies The merchants certainly had a wonderful imagination, for silk and indigo were just as exotic in Virginia as they were in England. The settlers found it more profitable to raise tobacco on the vast stretches of the free, fertile land. Thus the plans of settlers clashed with those of The Virginia Co.; and only point of agreement was the desire to produce iron. But, even there the motives of the settlers and those of The Virginia Co. of London were worlds apart. The settlers wanted to produce the tools badly needed in the colony, while the Company desired to cash in on the rising demand for iron which the home industry could not satisfy. Both the settlers and the Company lost no time trying to find iron ore. Locations of the early mines are not known. If, however, the reports of the Irishman, Francis Maguel, can be trusted, as early as 1609 a ship sailed for England with a load of 17 tons of crude iron which the East India Co. purchased at £ 4 per ton. The iron was of excellent quality and considered the best iron made of non-English ore that was ever purchased.

(Communication to the Secretary) : The investigation so fully described by Mr. Laudig was undertaken with the idea of determining if it is possible to learn by expesiment, without an actual trial in the furnace, what economical results can be expected from the use of a given ore-mixture. The research was necessarily preliminary, and the results obtained are only to be depended upon so far as they relate to the samples treated. With the exception of the ores obtained from the stock-piles of the Buffalo Furnace Company, and several samples taken at a neighboring furnace, there is no certainty that the ores represented the average shipments of any mine. For this reason the publication of the names of the ores might do producers a great injustice. The names of the ores arc therefore withheld, and their identity is further .veiled by leaving out of the analyses the phosphorus-contents. The investigation was begun with the preconceived idea that the rate of reduction would be found to be dependent upon the accessibility of the particles of the ore to the action of the reducing-gas. In other words, a spongy, brown hematite or a very fine Mesabi would be the easiest reduced. I had formed a scale with No. 21 first, No. 30 second, No. 1 third, Nos. 5, 24, 25 and the remaining Mesabis fourth, etc , which is sufficient to show how much actual results differ from a judgment based on physical characteristics. BROWN, Bodie, Cal.: Mr. Rickard's paper, with its valuable illustrations, brings into fresh clearness the game of hide-and-seek which the miner must play with his ore-deposit; but, more than this, it goes far towards classifying those perplexing idiosyncrasies which, while unclassified, constitute a labyrinth almost without clue. Probably every engineer can add to the list by the mention of at least one fresh detail from his own experience, and I for one would like to comment on two of Mr. Rickard's divisions. To what he has written about " walls within walls" and " walls without walls," the accompanying Figs. 1 and 2 may be appropriate, the more so as they represent conditions obtaining in a part of the Butte copper-belt more typical of the copper-veins as a whole than the Gagnon, which, in some respects the most interesting mine in the camp, stands almost alone in many particulars. (See nuns., xvi., 62.) Fig. 1 was sketched in January, 1895, in the stopes above the 700-foot level of the Colusa-Parrot mine, east of the Parrot and southwest. of the Anaconda. The stope, the commercial foot-wall of which is shown at A, was 30 feet wide at this section, the pay-ore being massive chalcocite, jumbled with bornite, pyrite, quartz and thoroughly broken-down granite. A and At are inch-thick seams of black talc; B, B' and B" are also talc, possibly 1/8-inch thick. In the plane of the section the "banded quartz " and " quartz and pyrite " were both of too low grade for extraction, but 5 feet back along the stope had been of fair value. The granite with quartz and bornite between Bt and A' was pay-ore, but that to the right of B" was not. In both cases the ferro-magnesian minerals had been removed, leaving, where not obscured by ore, faint, dark patches. Between A'

Robert H. Richards, Boston, Mass.: Mr. Goodale calls attention to the difficulty of obtaining clean tailings from the jigs which are fed by the spigots of the hydraulic separator. This difficulty is universally encountered. The Lake Superior copper mills practically overcome it by running the beds of those jigs loose, carrying into the hutch all of the available copper and some sand. These hutches are again jigged upon threesieve Collom jigs, where the treatment is very slow and gentle; and on the successive jigs lighter and lighter bedding is used. The last sieve is run thin enough to let some sand into the hutch. With these precautions most of the free copper is extracted, as well as a fair proportion of the included copper.

SO Milling Practice............................ 84 Power Plant............................... 96 Construction Costs.......................... 97 Geological Conditions The Elko Prince mine is in the Gold Circle district, Nevada, about 155 miles (2. 4 km.) from the town of Midas, 55 miles (88.5 km.) west of Battle Mountain and 50 miles (8.5 km.) northeast of Golconda. The district is described by Emmons in U. S. Geological Survey Bulletin 408, 1910. Little was said of the Elko Prince, however, as only a small amount of work had then been completed. The geological structure of the region is simple. The oldest exposed formation, covering most of the area, is rhyolite, which has a light-colored devitrified groundmass enclosing phenocrysts of feldspar, quartz, and magnetite. It has been somewhat weathered and partially stained with oxide of iron. There are several outcrops of andesite which cut the rhyolite. The ore deposits occur as fissure veins, replacement veins, and sheeted zones. The Elko Prince vein is of the first type. The rhyolite near the veins is silicified, stained with oxide of iron, and, at some localities, replaced by ore, or is so permeated by metals as to be classed as ore. The vein filling consists chiefly of quartz, and the values consist entirely of gold and silver. Part of the gold exists as the native metal and part is associated with pyrite. Silver occurs free and as argentite in banded streaks through the vein. These veins trend in a northwesterly direction, with dips varying from 65' to vertical. OvErpolEd copper, as commonly defined,- is copper which has been excessively reduced during the poling period of the refining process. Owing to its porosity, such coppcr is unfit for commercial purposes. The cause of this phenomenon is undoubtedly the lack of oxides in the copper, yet this does not completely explain it. Refined copper of the same "pitch" and "set" varies considerably in oxygen contents, and analyses of overpoled bars also show similar wide differences; moreover, it is possible to melt copper in 'crucibles so as to obtain bars that are practically free from oxygen although they show a "tough pitch" and "level set" surface. Frederick Johnson advances the following theory: The regulation of the quantity of oxygen in copper is the keynote of all copper refining. It is the presence of a well defined proportion of oxygen in the form of cuprous oxide, forming a copper-cuprous oxide eutectic, which enablcs copper to be cast free from blowholes. It seems that when oxygen is present, other gases are less soluble in molten copper; when oxygen is absent, or is present in insufficient quantity, the copper dissolves other gases, such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide, which are insoluble in the copper when solid, and, being rejected during the process of solidification, causes internal porosity and external ridges and excrescences.1 The "level set" of wire bars, etc., is entirely the result of a compromise between the occluded gases and cuprous oxide. With excess of the former the metal would be "overpitch" and spongy, while an excess of the latter would result in the metal being "underpitch" and brittle.2 The result of the absorption and subsequent expulsion of reducing gases, carbon monoxide and hydrogen,' and the effect of this action on the overpoling of copper are in dispute; the literature on the subject is full of contradictory statements and will continue to be so until better analytical methods have been developed. Sulfur, however, is tangible. The refiner can see it in his button sample and consequently attributes to it any trouble that may happen during the melting of the copper.

SAN DIMAS, in the State of Durango, Mexico, on the frontier of the State of Sinaloa, is the centre of an extensive and rich mining region, which has been exploited for over a hundred years; and the patio process for working silver ores has there attained the highest perfection of which it is capable. Local modifications have been engrafted upon the underlying principles of the process, but, as a whole, the San Dimas practice so fully illustrates its typical capabilities, that I have undertaken to describe its workings in the hope of lightening, to some degree, the labors of my professional brethren who may have occasion to visit Mexico." As is tolerably well known, the patio process, like all other systems of free amalgamation, is not successful with ores containing more than a trace of zinc or lead, the presence of zincblende being especially obnoxious. Iron and copper in small quantities are not particularly disadvantageous. The process succeeds very well with all sulphide ores which do not contain much more than a trace of arsenic and antimony, provided the tailings are concentrated, although, of course, it is best adapted for free milling ores. For suitable silver ores that contain small amounts of free gold the process is still a good one, but where the gold is combined with sulphurets, a considerable and even an excessive loss is inevitable. Hitherto the Mexicans have submitted to this loss, but, since the introduction of American mills, they are gradually abandoning the patio process in favor of the other. "A sensitive colorimetric assay for detecting mucins and glycoproteins rich in 0-glycosidically linked saccharides is reported. The method combines the susceptibility of N-acetylgalactosamine terminating 0-glyco idically linked saccharides to P-elimination with the Morgan-Elson reaction for N-acetylhexosamines with free reducing ends. All mucin and mucin-type glycoproteins but none of the serum-type glycoproteins tested resulted in characteristic color production. All mucins tested gave linear responses in the range 5 to 200 ""g and the assay was also adapted to the microscale involving the use of 96-well microtiter plates. The microassay in which the volumes of samples and reagents are scaled down 2.5-fold was particularly useful in monitoring of mucins, in the presence of other glycoconjugates, in large numbers of samples obtained during fractionation procedures. Cesium chloride, cesium bromide, potassium thiocyanate, and various detergents do not interfere with the colorimetric determination. Guanidine hydrochloride, cesium triftuoroacetate, and B-mercap- . toethanol decreased color by 30 to 45%; however, the interference was not serious to prevent the use of the method for detection of mucins in their presence. The use of the method for the specific detection of mucin during fractionation by gel filtration and density gradient centrifugation of cystic fibrosis sputum samples is demonstrated. Mucins are an important class of biomacromolecules whose structure-function relationship is poorly understood (1,2). The investigations of mucins are hampered by difficulties in purifying these very large size molecules which appear to avidly bind other components of the mucus (3,4). One of the problems during purification is the specific detection of mucins. For example, during the various purification steps, the fractions containing mucins are typically detected by assaying for neutral sugars (hexoses) (5,6), for sialic acids (7), or for periodate oxidizable saccharide units (8). However, these methods are not entirely satisfactory because neutral sugars, sialic acids, and periodate-oxidizable saccharides are also components of other glycoconjugates. In addition, the neutral sugar and sialic acid measurements are also subject to interference from high levels of proteins and nucleic acids."

"Nestling in a little valley, right under the shadow of the rugged peaks of the Rocky Mountains and just over the great Continental Divide on the Pacific Slope, are Columbia Gardens, Butte's one rare beauty spot. Here purling brooks, fed from springs of snow-water course through the grounds to lend their aid later in making the great Columbia River. It is a question which has done more to make this oasis the charming place it is, nature or man, for both appear to have put forth their best efforts. The inspiring scenery surrounding the gardens is found in close association with the consummate art of the trained landscape gardener. The most delicate flowers, nurtured in large greenhouses, in the pleasant months of early spring and summer are transplanted into outdoor beds and in many instances woven, as it were, into beautiful designs. Green trees and grass on every side rest the tired eyes.Butte owes this delightful breathing spot to former Senator W. A. Clark, who owns and maintains it. A decade ago there were five large smelters belching forth their obnoxious fumes upon the city, making it impossible for vegetation to flourish within the confines of the town, a condition which fortunately no longer prevails. Primarily with a view of furnishing the children with a healthy playground, other than the muddy or dusty streets, Mr. Clark bought and developed the land upon which these grounds are situated. Upon numerous days in each month during the summer season, when school no longer demands attendance, his street railway carries the little folks to and from this ideal spot, free of all charge. ""Children's Day"" at the gardens presents a scene of life and happiness which once seen can never be forgot."

THE Columbia Steel Corporation, organized in 1922, and taken over by the United States Steel Corporation on Feb. l, 1930, is operating one blast furnace at Ironton, Utah, which was started on April 30, 1924, and is producing approximately 14,000 tons of pig iron per month. Half of the pig iron produced is basic iron and is used in its own plants at Pittsburg and Torrance, Cal. The ore for the blast furnace is shipped from Desert Mound, Utah, near Cedar City, in the southern part of the' State, approximately 231 miles from Iroaton. The ore is a hematite, disseminated with magnetite, the chemical analysis showing approximately 12 to 20 per cent magnetite, and under the micro- scope the ore has the appearance of a magnetite.
