The Cadia Hill concentrator at Newcrest’s Cadia Operations has undergone several modifications and upgrades to treat an increased throughput rate of harder ore from the Cadia East block cave mine.Subsequent to the commissioning of the expanded circuit, the flotation cleaner block has undergone a systematic optimisation programme tackling all facets of circuit operation. This included debottlenecking circuit constraints and installation of Jameson cell technology to enhance copper and gold recovery while rejecting fluorine and gangue from the concentrate.This paper outlines the improvements over the course of the project and results obtained from the implemented actions.CITATION:Akerstrom, B, Seppelt, J, Waters, T, Bubnich, J and Seaman, D, 2018. The combination wet and dry coal-cleaning process is not an attempt at a compromise between the wets and the drys nor is its merit confined entirely to the limitation of moisture in the smaller sizes. It is more correctly, and more broadly, an application of the sized-coal cleaning principle adapting itself in an ideal fashion to present day multiple-size preparation practice. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to call attention to the broader significance of the term "combination wet and dry process" and to mention some of the factors that govern its application. In the narrow sense, when considered apart from the sized-coal cleaning principle, the combination process finds its justification chiefly in the ability to limit the moisture in cleaned coal. Larger sizes of coal offer less superficial area compared with their bulk for the attraction of moisture films. They drain more readily in bins or railroad cars, having more interstitial space for the free flow of water. Therefore, they neither attract nor hold objectionable moisture percentages. In fact, there is so keen a demand for certain washed sizes containing some moisture that hygroscopic salts such as calcium chloride are applied to attract and retain it. When coal deliveries are made on a guaranteed moisture percentage the coarser sizes may be washed and mixed back with the fines without adding greatly to the original moisture but the fines must be dry cleaned or dried to control moisture. Thus in all respects moisture in the coarser sizes is less objectionable than in the fines. The implication of this statement, that moisture is always more or less objectionable, is true. It is safe to say that if dry-cleaning apparatus could be perfected to a point at which its technical results, cost and other aspects would be equal to wet washing, water would no longer be used. As it is, we find that good technical results are more difficult to obtain by dry cleaning than by water. Obviously the use of air tables for coarse coal is not ideal, for it involves the attempt to stratify material in a thin bed on a table surface when the load is only one particle deep. Furthermore, the various air cleaning tables on large sizes require a large volume of air for separation, more power to operate, more dust-collecting apparatus and involve more coal breakage.

With the constantly increasing sales competition, coal to be sold today must meet the test of quality in every respect. The producers must be able to make all marketable sizes that will meet such general requirements as follows: 1. Ash content must be consistently low, depending upon the use to be made of the coal. 2. Sulfur content must be controlled accurately according to requirements. 3. All sizes must be positively free from visible impurities. 4. Free moisture of washed sizes must be reduced to a minimum. 5. The freezing of wet coal in cars must be prevented. 6. The percentage of fines in small mixed sizes must be controlled to give the uniform and proper combustion when used on various types of automatic stokers. 7. The undersize particles or degradation caused by handling must be kept to an absolute minimum in all sizes loaded. Many difficulties may be met in bringing any particular coal to meet these quality requirements, because the extent to which the quality of a coal may be controlled is determined largely by its physical characteristics. Preparation of an Impure Coal Bed The application of modern and scientific methods in the controlled preparation of bituminous coal from a bed in the mid-western field will illustrate the results that can be accomplished by adequate preparation: The bed referred to contains coal inherently excellent as to low ash and other desirable characteristics; in fact, the coal itself is one of the best in the field. It is, however, divided into four layers by dirt bands of soft shale 1 to 2 in. thick. It also contains much sulfur in the form of sulfur lenses and laminated sheets. When coal is deposited on the decks of pneumatic tables, all fine particles clinging to the larger pieces are blown free by the air. Inasmuch as the air retains an appreciable residual velocity after passing through the bed of coal, it is capable of suspending particles of goodly size. This velocity is dissipated gradually and, unless confined, can readily extend beyond the limits of the plant. Today the ideal in the design and operation of pneumatic cleaning plants is not that they be no dustier than the ordinary tipple, but rather that they be as clean as an office or shop. This degree of perfection may not yet have been attained in any commercial plant, but it is not impossible of achievement. Not until recently has the recirculation principle been applied to pneumatic separating plants. In the writer's estimation, it has not yet been proved entirely satisfactory in commercial installations. A serious obstacle lies in the fact that it is practically impossible to provide a truly closed circuit. The air circuits must be interrupted at certain points, if only for the introduction of raw material and for the recovery of the finished product. It is feasible to prevent the escape of polluted air at these points, but this can scarcely be accomplished without admitting additional air into the circuit. These additions of air are cumulative, which necessitates means for emitting to the atmosphere the excess while still carrying its objectionable burden, if provisions are not made for conditioning. If it must be provided at all, conditioning is frequently simpler and more economical if applied to the entire volume of air involved. This procedure eliminates the extra initial cost and operating expense of the closed system. Crane Cheek Experiments The first noteworthy commercial installation of pneumatic equipment was made in 1922, at the Crane Creek plant of the American Coal Co. of Allegheny County, at McComas, W. Va. Six tables for cleaning coal between the limits of and 3 in. comprised the initial installation. Dust was collected by hoods connected by a system of ducts to exhauster fans. In this installation the unit dust burden was small, owing to the removal of fines from the feed by vibrating screens.

Experience has shown that there are some factors connected with the drying of fine washed coal that are not present in drying of slack coal as normally practiced at cement kilns or pulverized coal plants. It is the purpose of this paper to show some of these variations as they have been encountered under actual operation. The Champion No. 1 cleaning plant of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. uses the wet system of cleaning coal. The plant is equipped to produce commercial sizes or mixtures, the primary sizes being plus 6 in. and 4 by 6 in., which are hand-picked. Minus 4-in. sizes are all cleaned by the wet process. To produce a commercial product as free of moisture as possible, the washed coal is first passed over sizing and dewatering screens, then each size except the — ?-in. coal is conveyed to loading booms by slow-moving draining conveyors. As the +?-in. sizes are not heat-dried, no data will be given, as it is the purpose of this paper to describe the heat drying of — ?-in. coal as practiced at the Champion No. 1 plant of the Pittsburgh Coal Company. To fully appreciate the conditions, it must be remembered that the — ?-in. product is now shipped at a lower moisture content than when received from the mine. The incoming coal in the — ?-in. size will average 5 per cent. moisture and the shipped product 3 per cent. moisture. This is a case where a wet process gives a reduction of both ash and moisture in the fine sizes. The shipped product, therefore, is more uniform in all characteristics, and uniformity of product is the most important single factor in coal preparation. The 0 by ?-in. coal is first dewatered on slow-moving continuous bucket dewatering elevators, running at the rate of 40 ft. per minute, with 48-in. perforated buckets with ¼ by 1½-in. slots, spaced ? by 2?-in. centers staggered. The moisture in the coal discharged from the elevators runs 20 to 28 per cent., depending on the fineness of the product. The discharge from the dewatering elevator is further drained on a drag-type conveyor equipped with ½-mm. wedge wire screen. FUSED quartz is a glass made by the fusion of nearly pure silica. Some confusion in terminology exists but in the trade today "fused quartz" generally refers to the perfectly transparent colorless product made from rock crystal whereas "fused silica" is a white, translucent product made from silica sand. Vitrified silica is the term preferred by purists for all quartz glass, but it lacks the definiteness of -the trade terms. Since the raw materials, methods of production, and properties of the finished products arc different for the two types, the trade terms are preferred. As fused quartz is amorphous, it-physical properties differ greatly from those of quartz crystal. Lacking crystallographic directions and having no piezo-electric properties, fused quartz. of course, has no value for the making of radio oscillator plates; but it does have other valuable and unique properties. Perhaps the 'best known and most useful properties are its extremely low coefficient of expansion and its ability to transmit short-wave ultraviolet radiant energy. "GeneralWabush Mines is an unincorporated joint venture of seven steel companies and Pickands Mather & Co. The mining and concentrating facilities are located in southwestern Labrador and the pelletizing and shiploading facilities are at Pointe Noire, 200 miles south, near the town of Sept-lies.The operation is based on a 5 ½ sq. mi. specular hematite deposit with a reserve of 375 million tons of concentrate. Annual production capacity is rated at 6 million tons of pellets per year. The final upgrading process utilizes high-tension separation of silica following wet autogenous grinding, spiral gravity separation and fluo-solids drying. The concentrate is railed in closed cars to Pointe Noire. The concentrate is reground dry and pelletized on Dravo Lurgi travelling grate machines to produce an oxide pellet with 65.5% Fe, 3.0% Si02, 1.95% Mn and 93.5% Tumble Index.HistoryPlant operations commenced in 1965 with a concentrator capacity of 5.3 million tons per year and a pelletizing capacity of 4.8 million tons per year. The original facilities for classifying the crude ore into fine and coarse fractions for storage purposes before reblending as autogenous mill feed were found to be unnecessary and were by-passed after plant startup. Capacity of the operation was increased to 6.0 million tons of pellets per year in 1968. This increased capacity required the installation of an additional160 cleaner spirals in the ore dressing plant, a new 5000 hp ball mill, three balling circuits and increased cooling air capacity in the pellet plant.In 1970, the regrind circuit in the pellet plant was converted to dry grinding and a significant reduction in grinding media consumption and maintenance costs was realized. A ninth grinding mill of 5000 hp capacity was installed to compensate for the reduced capacity in going from wet to dry grinding."

OUR own Institute of Metals and Iron and Steel divisions cooperated with the Iron and Steel Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Welding Society, and the American Society for Steel Treating in a busy week at Cleveland. The morning sessions were held at the Hotel Cleveland and the afternoon ones at the Auditorium, where the metallurgical exhibition under the auspices of the American Society for Steel Treating not only occupied the arena of the Auditorium but completely filled the huge adjacent Annex. In the intervals of sessions the members thronged the exhibits but in the evenings the local attendance was so great that if the crowds had been any larger it would have been difficult to see the exhibits. With so many firms, both producers of metals and of equipment accessory to their production and use, it would be impossible to mention them -all and unfair to single out a few, since no two individuals' judgment would coincide as to relative interest and importance. In any case an exhibit is a thing to be seen rather than described, and these were well worth seeing.

Manganese is a nearly white metal, having about the same appearance when fractured as white cast-iron. Its specific gravity is about 8, while that of white cast-iron, reasonably free from impurities, is but a little above 7.5. As produced commercially, it is combined with iron, and with small percentages of silicon, phosphorus, and sulphur. It is generally produced in the blast-furnace. If the silicon is under 0.50 per cent., the product will be white. If the manganese is under 40 per cent., with the remainder mostly iron, and silicon not high enough to make the product gray, the alloy is called spiegeleisen, and the fracture will show flat reflecting surfaces, from which it takes its name. With manganese above 50 per cent., the iron alloy is called ferromanganese. As manganese increases beyond 50 per cent., the mass cracks in cooling, and when it approaches 98 per cent. the mass crumbles or falls in small pieces. When the percentage of manganese is high, the planes of the fracture are not so bright as when it is lower. The ferro-manganese which we have used in the experiments reported in this paper, contains Mn, 81.62; Si, 0.256 ; and combined carbon, 6.153 per cent. We have not been able to make test-bars from this, because the alloy cracks in small pieces in cooling. Manganese combines with iron in almost any proportion, but if an iron containing manganese is remelted, more or less of the manganese will escape by volatilization, and by oxidation with other elements present in the iron. If sulphur be present, some of the manganese will be likely to unite with it and escape, thus reducing the amount of both elements in the casting. Hence, in remelting irons, some of the sulphur which has entered from the fuel with which the iron is melted will very likely unite with some of the manganese in irons which make up the mixture and escape. Remelting, therefore,' reduces the percentage of manganese in cast-iron.

The subject of blast-furnace slag is one which has had much consideration, particularly from the scientific standpoint, and several years ago technical literature contained many learned discussions on the oxygen-ratio of the acids and the bases, all on the assumption that acids and bases must be present in a ratio depending on molecular weight and chemical valency. Much work has also been don.e, sometimes in conjunction with the former, on the total heat and the temperature of initial fusion or softening of various slags. A wider knowledge of the blast-furnace now enables us to say that for practical purposes this work has been of almost no value. It is now generally admitted that on,the physical side the important point of a given slag is neither its total heat of fusion nor its softening-point, but its free-running temperature, since this is the critical temperature of the furnace. This temperature bears no definite relation to the softening-temperature, as determined by Seger cones, for instance, because some slags melt relatively like ice, with a very short viscous-range, while others melt relatively like tar, with a very long viscous-range. In one the difference between the softening- and the free-running temperature may be very small, as little as 100° F., while in another this difference may easily be 200' or 300°. The importance of this difference is so great in practice as to destroy completely the value of exhaustive investigations, even such as those of 0. Boudouard, published a few years ago.'

The purpose of the investigation on which this paper is based is to determine whether the structural change which occurs in the slow cooling of steel below the transformation range has an important effect on its engineering properties. We recognize two distinct things which occur in steel when it is brought from above to below the transformation range, first, the transformation proper, that is, the breaking up of the austenite or solid solution of the cementite in the remainder of the iron, and the liberation of its components as undissolved cementite and as ferrite or alpha iron; and second, a structural change consisting in the gradual coalescence of the ferrite and cementite respectively into larger and larger separate masses. Let us distinguish these from each other by speaking of them as " the transformation " and " the structural change " respectively. If the cooling is at all rapid the unevenness of contraction induces severe stress; so that in a sense a slow cooling has a third influence, the prevention of such stress. This transformation from austenite to ferrite plus cementite can complete itself only below the transformation range; and, because this structural change is a change in the structural arrangement of the products of that transformation, it too can complete itself only at temperatures below that range, say below 725°; and of these temperatures it is only those between 600° and 725° that give the metal sufficient mobility to permit this structural rearrangement to progress with ally rapidity. The transformation is now known to be rapid, but the structural change is relatively slow. For many years there have been occasional reports of the discovery of gold from a belt of the coast country of Texas which is underlain by deposits belonging to the lower Eocene. For the most part they have been treated as newspaper reports and no examination or record of them has been made. Among such, it may be mentioned that in 1896 there was a flurry over reported gold-discoveries west of Luling and elsewhere in this belt, and in 1903 some prospect-shafts were sunk on the Gon-zales branch of the Galveston, Houston & San Antonio railway, 3 miles below Harwood. During 1912, further discoveries have again brought the matter to our attention, and it may be of interest to record the facts as we have found them. Some years ago specimens were sent me, which were said to have been taken from certain beds on Gazley creek, and concentrated by washing in a rocker. In them were several particles of gold sufficiently large to be visible to the eye. Under the microscope they showed to be, with few exceptions, sharp cornered, and not rounded as is usual with placer-gold. They were not filings, however, but their sharpness seemed rather to be due to a recent freeing from their matrix. One or two grains were rusty, and one copper-hued, but the most of them were tolerably bright. On examining the material of the samples small grains or fragments were found, of a yellowish brown color, which seemed to be of a finely-granular structure—possibly a sandstone. In these fragments I found particles of gold, one of them being large enough to be visible without a lens. Gazley creek empties into the Colorado river just north of Smithville, and for a few miles north of that place its banks show, beneath the deposits of more recent materials, the sands and clays of the Lignitie division of the Eocene, with lignite, shells of iron, etc.

In Australia's remote North West are located the operations of Cliffs Robe River, one of the world's largest iron ore projects. Initial project cost was $US300 million and required the construction of a deepwater port, two toms for 3000 people, a 105 Mw power station and 170 km of railroad, all in harsh, arid country over 1300 km from the nearest industrial centre. The ore occurs as goethite cappings on scattered mesas and averages 57 percent iron. All aspects of the project are reviewed from pre-operational research, through project construction to current operation.

People in economically developed societies demonstrate inherent human care for Earth and want to stop pollution. Yet efforts to clean Earth seem bogged in confusion from wildly contradictory and alarmist predictions of æclimate crisisÆ. Supposed experts openly disagree yet weÆre told thereÆs universal agreement humans are causing æthe end of life as we know itÆ. The turmoil combines with peopleÆs feelings of fear, guilt, anger, hopelessness and even resignation and apathy to trigger æclimate alarmÆ. The paper enables people to rediscover clarity, hope and support for Earth by understanding how climate alarm and confusion were created and how they actually increase pollution. Many people seem to think global warming is as serious as pollution and worry that questioning alarm will enable pollution. Yet theyÆre different. We need be even more concerned about climate alarm because history shows repeatedly that when buried by ignorance and panic real problems grow overwhelming. Environmental credibility is endangered by confused politicians and sensationalist media. When weÆre willing to re-evaluate what weÆve been told we replace fear and confusion with facts and freedom to identify opportunities. Combining this with practical understanding of human behaviour and leadership enables opportunities to be identified and action taken. The paper shows how confident, informed leadership leads and supports higher productivity and effective care for the natural environment.

Climate and hydrology data are required during all phases of mining projects, including impact assessment, mine planning and design, operational water management and mine closure and reclamation design. In the Canadian north, data sources are spatially sparse and often short-term in nature, and design parameters are often estimated based on data collected at sites far distant. Confidence in such data can be increased by verification or modification using data collected during properly implemented baseline and operational monitoring programs. A data set that accurately reflects conditions at the project is more readily accepted by regulatory agencies during the permitting process, and allows development of more effective and economic water management, mitigation measures and compensation. Data requirements and collection methods for developing an adequate data set for mine development are reviewed. These are illustrated using examples from oil sands, diamond and metal mines in the Canadian north.

This paper identifies potential technologies for Carbon dioxide abatement from the mining and metal industry with special reference to the Aluminium industry. Mine reclamation could contribute to this effort to successfully reach the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction commitments for a nation. An overview of GHG production by the mining and metal industry together with a review of principles used to set the context in which specific options for GHG reduction are described. Options for GHG reduction in the mining and metal industry include reforestation, Addition of soil amendments or neutralizing agents, CO2 capture and storage, initiatives towards energy reduction, waste heat recovery and alternative energy use. An analysis and quantification of the potential GHG reduction of potential carbon sinks and sequestration options for the mining and metal industry are provided. Cost estimates for different options are provided. The paper also identifies sources that could fund research regarding GHG reduction options. The paper concludes with recommendations.

CRUSHING of Climax mine-run ore is carried out in two plants: No. 1 plant (flowsheet in Fig. 1) has a capacity of approximately 5000 tons per day. It is used as a stand-by except when maximum production is required. No. 2 plant (Fig. 2) has a top capacity of approximately 17,000 tons per day. The No. 2 crusher is more efficient to operate on reduced tonnages regardless of the wide variation in peak capacities. The system of crushing is similar in both plants: Mine ore, of a size which can be drawn through 48 by 96-in. slusher openings underground, is dumped into the crusher bins from ten-ton mine cars and fed into 48 by 60-in. Buchanan jaw crushers by means of chutes and Ross chain feeders. The jaw crushers are set to discharge at approximately 9-in. size. Jaw crusher discharge is conveyed to 7-ft. In the grand scheme of things, the 9.5-t (21,000-lb) shipment of molybdenum concentrate that left Freeport-McMoRan?s Climax Mine site on May 10, 2012 was not unlike the thousands of others that have been hauled away from the site during the last century, except for the fact that this shipment marked the official rebirth of one of America?s greatest mines. For nearly two decades, 17 years to be exact, there was no production from the mine that was once the largest underground mine in the world and was so important to the Allies? effort during World War II that it was assigned the highest priority of any mine in the United States by the War Production Board. The economic recession in 1980 put an end to the mine?s success, and the Great Recession of 2008 nearly derailed the mine again. But, like the nearby town of Leadville, CO, the mine survived thanks to an investment of more than $700 million by Climax Molybdenum Co., a Freeport-McMoRan company, to bring the Climax Mine back into production.
