This paper presents a general re-view of the various methods of briquetting coals, with and without the aid of a binder, with special reference to the production of a suitable briquette from Nova Scotia 'fines' for re-blending with industrial coal. From the economic and technical viewpoints, either small stoker-sized briquettes made with about 4 per cent asphalt in standard low-pressure double-roll presses, or briquettes made without binder in high-pressure double-roll presses, appear to be the most reasonable solution at present.

THE briquet plant of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co., at Lansford, Pa., has previously been referred to.1 It has passed. the stage of experiment and now rests,, on a foundation practically and financially sound. The purpose of this paper is to explain how success has been attained, and to set standards for the development of hard-coal briquetting which may eliminate future failures. All the conclusions are based on actual results, avoiding speculation and theory. Up to three years ago, the L. C. & N. Co. used coal-tar pitch as a binder in making hard-coal briquets. The plant operated with a monthly output of 300 to 600 tons and was unable to meet its own expenses. Naturally, no one was satisfied, especially as the ideals of a smokeless briquet were still unrealized. Then came the Dutch oil process, introduced in this country by the General Briquetting Co. of New York. This process uses as binder a small percentage of heavy residue of petroleum, which, being liquid, permits great economy of handling; it also did away with the most objectionable fumes of the former briquets. This oil2 is not absolutely smokeless; heating the fresh fuel to red heat liberates some low-volatile hydrocarbons, yielding a white smoke which is not objectionable. On the other hand, this oil adds to the briquet about 7 per cent. of volatile matter, giving the product a heating capacity equal to that of the best free-burning anthracite coal. The average silt used in the manufacture of these boulets averages 16.5 per cent. chemical ash, corresponding to 12,000 B.t.u. per pound of coal. The Hydrolene used as binder runs about 17,500 B.t.u. per pound, and approximately 7 per cent. of it enters into the mixture, hence 12,000 X 0.93 11,160 B.t.u. 17,500 X 0.07 1,125 B.t.u. BRITISH Guiana, Great Britain's only South American colony, may be reached by very comfortable steamers, both from North America and Europe. The trip from North American Atlantic ports requires about 12 to 14 days; that from Europe about 18 to 20 days. A number of steamship lines, including Canadian, American, and Dutch, have regular sailings between North America and British Guiana, with calls en route at various interesting ports in the West Indies and northern South America. Moreover, several lines, including British, German, and French, have steamships operating regularly between Europe and the West Indies. Indeed, so popular have the West Indian voyages become in recent years that, during the winter months, special cruises in considerable number are organized for many vessels that ply in the trans-Atlantic service in the summer. A trip to British Guiana, therefore, has become a delightful experience. After visits at the various attractive Leeward and Windward islands and Trinidad, the approach to the low, flat, British Guiana coast, with its muddy coastal waters extending for many miles offshore, is somewhat of a contrast. Arrival in Guiana waters is signalled by the appearance of the modern high-power Demerara Light, located "on a shoal about twelve miles from the mouth of Demerara river. From this point, if the tide is right, a pilot takes the steamer across the bar, eight to ten miles offshore, and into Georgetown harbour. At high tide, the water above the bar ranges from 15 to 18 feet in depth, depending on whether it is neap tide or spring tide; at low tide, the corresponding depths are 9 to 11 feet. As the bar is of soft mud, however, it is usually possible for vessels to pass over it with a draught of about two feet in excess of that indicated by the tide tables. Upon nearing the shore, one sees first the Georgetown wireless towers, then the light-house and the tall chimneys of sugar mills and of various factories in Georgetown, and finally the palms and other tropical trees and the houses of Georgetown itself along the sea shore and the east bank of Demerara river. Extensive wharves operated by various exporting and importing companies stretch along the river bank and activity prevails in Georgetown harbour. The principal exports are sugar, rice, gold, diamonds, bauxite, balata, lumber, fruit and other tropical products. The imports are food-stuffs, wearing apparel, and manufactured materials of many kinds.

Valuation of mining companies and their underlying assets prepared by brokers' analysts are, by necessity, approximations. The reliability of the valuations is entirely proportional to the quality of available data, the reliability of forecasts and the nature of underlying commodity price assumptions. The latter is perhaps the greatest single cause of gross variations in company and asset earnings estimates and- valuations. Assumptions are often necessary regarding commodity price achievement based on commodity hedge positions. Public disclosure from listed companies provides a sound base from which to project earnings, cashflows and balance sheets. The uncommon disclosure of projected production and cost schedules often reduces the reliability of future estimates. The application of reserve and resource estimates is contentious with practitioners applying differing weightings to importance of resources in estimating mine lives (and therefore cashflow streams). Valuation methods applied in equity markets usually focus on relative value and the identification of pricing anomalies. The commonest ""rules of thumb"" applied in the valuation of mining companies (and therefore their underlying assets) is with the use of year specific price/earnings (P/E) and price/cashflow (P/CF) ratios, with low multiples suggesting undervalued assets, high multiples overvalued situations (but these rules can often be clouded by market expectations of underlying commodity price movements). Another simply applied valuation tool is to examine the examine the value placed on reserves and resources by the market. Inexpensive gold in the ground (expressed as $ of market capitalisation per ounce of reserves or resources) might indicate a buying opportunity, but the market does discount the value of gold in the ground prior to mine development and where development risk is perceived.

"INTRODCJCTIONAlveolar macrophages are free lung cells located on the surface of small airways and alveoli. These phagocytes play an important role in the protection of the lung against airborne bacteria and particles.1 However, hyperactivation of pulmonary phagocytes can lead to excessive secretion of enzymes and reactive oxygen species which could result in lung injury, emphysema, or fibrosis.2,3 Analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage effluents for cell types and cellular activity has yielded information concerning the etiology of various pneumoconioses. For example, emphysema associated with inhalation of coal dust or cigarette smoke has been related to enhanced secretion of reactive oxygen species from alveolar macrophages.4-7 In contrast, hypoactivation of alveolar macrophages has been associated with inhalation of diesel particulates"" and has been related to increased susceptibility to pulmonary infection. s Inhalation of cotton dust has been associated with dramatic increases in lavagable polymorphonuclear leukocytes9 while pulmonary sarcoidosis and silicosis have been related with high numbers of lymphocytes in lavage effluentsl0,11The objective of the present study was to obtain lavage effluents from 8 control subjects, 8 healthy power plant workers exposed to fly ash, 1 healthy coal miner, and 1 rock driller with acute silicosis. These effluents were analyzed for total numbers of alveolar macrophages, lymphocytes and neutrophils and for secretory activity of alveolar macrophages. Data were then analyzed to determine what response patterns were characteristic for given dust exposures.METHODSSelection of SubjectsThe 8 control subjectS were all adult males from the area of Morgantown, WV. Two subjects among the controls had smoked cigarettes for approximately three pack-years and had stopped more than ten years ago. The 8 power plant :workers were all healthy adult male employees of a power facility in Hatfield, PA, approximately thirty miles from Morgantown. One of the power plant personnel was a comparable ex-smoker. The remaining subjects were all lifelong non-smokers. The coal miner was a healthy non-smoking male from Morgantown, WV. The rock driller was a patient under treatment with corticosteroids for acute silicosis. He had shown considerable clinical improvement with this treatment but still manifested significant radiologic and pulmonary functional abnonnalities at the time of lavage. The mean age of the 8 control subjects was 36 years (range: 31 to 49 years); the mean age of the remaining subjects studied was 38 years (range: 29 to 53 years)."

THE OBJECT of this paper is twofold: (1) To analyze the forces that cause air bubbles to spread on mineral surfaces in the flotation process; and (2) To develop a rational expression that will serve as a criterion of the floatability of minerals, to the end that the efficiencies of various flotation reagents can be accurately compared. Heretofore, the subject of the spreading of air bubbles has been dismissed with the statement that the surfaces of minerals on which bubbles spread are water-repellent. Imperfect understanding of the forces involved has led to the use, hitherto, of various erroneous formulas for the calculation of the comparative effectiveness of flotation reagents.

In this paper the effect of humic substances (natural surfactants), electrolytes and solid particles on bubble coalescence, and as a consequence on froth stability, has been investigated. We formed two bubbles of equal size and forced them to collide using a novel experimental apparatus. The interactions were recorded by a high-speed camera, the images of which helped to determine the coalescence frequency and the coalescence time, as well as the mechanisms of the interactions. Two types of humic substances were used, along with three different electrolytes. Humic substances appeared to have a considerable effect on bubble coalescence, while the effect of electrolytes was minimal. Moderate and high hydrophobic glass spheres were used between two bubbles. Very hydrophobic spheres promoted fast bubble coalescence, while moderate hydrophobic spheres had no effect. We present data of coalescence frequency and time, as well as images of the coalescence events.

"Operations routinely run flotation tests in laboratory mechanical cells to determine adjustments to plant operation based on feed flotation response or the effect of new reagents and dosages. The metallurgical results of these tests are certainly affected by changes in bubble size, which simultaneously impact the recoveries of the collection and froth zones. It is known that bubble size depends on the characteristics and operation of the machine in use, particularly on the gas flow rate delivered to the unit and the selected frother type and dosage. Although flotation rate constants have been related to bubble size, bubble surface area flux seems to be a more fitting variable to correlate flotation kinetics and cell performance, as it integrates bubble size and superficial gas velocity effects. However, although some evidence has been provided, a categorical relationship between cell recovery and bubble surface area flux has not been established. Our interest is to demonstrate this relationship to use it as a basis for developing soft sensors to track on-line collection zone recovery in cells. Flotation tests were designed to produce Cu concentrates for a range of bubble surface area flux values, obtained through changes in frother concentration at a constant gas flow rate, and by increasing gas flow rate at the same frother concentration. The tests were run on samples prepared from an ore batch supplied by a local operation, following strict grinding and flotation procedures, with a shallow froth to approximate cell recovery to that in the collection zone. Bubble sizes were determined using the sampling-for-imaging technique developed at McGill. The results unequivocally showed a consistent positive correlation between cell recovery and bubble surface area flux, and significant variations in performance when frother addition and gas flow rate were changed.INTRODUCTIONMineral flotation is a separation process to produce concentrates of valuable minerals by selective attachment of particles to the surface of bubbles. The process is carried out in machines where air is injected through a mineral pulp to form bubbles, and operated to create two zones: a bottom one (collection zone) where bubbles are continuously generated under conditions adequate to form bubble-particle aggregates by collision of the rising bubbles with suspended particles; and a top one (froth zone) where bubbles and bubble-particle aggregates continue to rise while concentrating and forming a froth layer for water and entrained particles to drain back to the collection zone, before overflowing as a concentrate stream. The phenomena occurring in these zones are complex and, in many cases, interactive, as they simultaneously affect stages of the particle separation sequence occurring in both zones. Although there have been significant advances in instrumentation to characterize particle and bubble populations, these have not resulted in knowledge to explain or models to describe phenomena from fundamental principles. Measurements continue to be limited to the development of empirical models for predicting the effect of operating variables on performance."

This Paper will deal with Bucketwheel Suction Dredging and its particular relationship to mining applications. There will be comparisons with other methods of suction dredging and descriptions of two recent bucketwheel installations in the mining area. The Directory of World Dredging Fleets published in the `larch 1984 edition of World Dredging magazine shows that there are about 1.000 conventional Cutterhead Dredges listed throughout the world with 289 in the United States. There are 242 Bucketline Dredges listed throughout the world of which only 6 are in the United States. These figures are not completely accurate because several units are known to the author that are not on the list and, of course, there may be others.

Sheaves are a critical safety component in a winding system and are expected to survive such extreme loading events as rope break. Sheave designs have often been developed and evolved empirically, consequently many existing sheaves are not necessarily subjected to the detailed analyses that are possible using todayÆs design tools. The design philosophy for sheaves is that the rope should be the weakest link in the system so that associated equipment can function safely for any load up to rope break. A number of failure mechanisms must be considered, but buckling is often prominent. During the course of investigating the feasibility of upgrading the hoisting capacity of a winding system, the capacity of all critical components was reviewed. The sheaves in the system were found to have insufficient spoke buckling capacity for the specified rope. A proposal to increase the spoke buckling capacity by connecting spokes together using a simple tie arrangement was evaluated and found ineffective. An alternative tie arrangement concept was developed and evaluated and shown to be adequate. This paper describes the finite element model, analysis approach and results for the original sheave and the two modifications. The contribution of the sheave rim to the total buckling capacity is evaluated. Some practical issues for spoke tie modifications are discussed.

"Many of the valid international building codes state that the lateral support provided by the soil is sufficient to prevent buckling of fully embedded piles. However, the development of small diameter micropiles and especially the use of high strength steel have evolved to applications including high capacity elements. The ultimate structural load bearing capacity of a pile in a cohesive soil is decided by examining which gives the lowest value, the peak buckling load and the resisting moment provided by the surrounding soil medium or the structural capacity of the pile cross section. In both cases, the initial deflection of the pile is a significant factor when the axial load bearing capacity of the pile is determined. Steel micropiles are joined commonly with mechanical splices. A less rigid mechanical splice is often a weaker hinge that allows the pile to bend and deflect more during installation increasing the initial deflection of a pile. In addition the less rigid splice element decreases the bending capacity of a jointed pile section and the ultimate axial load capacity of the entire pile. A series of FE analysis performed for various pile sizes suggest that the steel pipe piles including separate pile sections and mechanical splicing elements should have the combined bending stiffness of EIshaft = 0,75 × EIpile. This requirement yields to the buckling resistance of at least 96 % of the solid reference pile with the sameinitial eccentricity in similar soil conditions.IntroductionMany of the valid international building codes state that the lateral support provided by the soil is sufficient to prevent buckling of fully embedded piles. The potential buckling of these very slender high capacity piles in soft soils may in many cases be the controlling design factor of the pile, especially with end bearing micropiles.A typical sequence of soil strata in Nordic countries, such as Norway, Finland and Sweden, constitutes of friction soil or dry crust clay on top of soft clay followed by till. This soil stratum often rests on solid bedrock of granite or gneiss. Conditions like these are suitable for slender end bearing piles subjected to buckling and especially steel pipe piles where most of the material is located at the edge of the cross section. Other reasons for using slender steel pipe piles are for example fast installation with minimal waste, efficient manufacturing and relatively well established design and execution procedures. Minimum quality criteria’s regarding splices for steel pipe piles are recommended to be set as national provisions to ensure quality and comparable procurements in foundation business."

"THE HOLLINGER MINE has been producing gold and by-product silver almost continuously for forty-eight years. The value of current production is $10,000,000 annually from one million tons of ore. Its management •has, particularly over the past decade, increasingly . concerned itself with the problem of profitable operation in a time of steadily rising costs and a fixed price of gold. At one period in the life of the mine, before World War II, production resulted in yearly profit margins that were stable and relatively thick. In winning gold from a series of inconsistent vertical ore lenses, operating management was much better protected than it is today against a general rise in cost or dip in grade of ore. The tissue-like thinness of present-day margins demand more careful handling. A sharp rise in costs, if protracted, could easily rip the tissue to shreds and close down the business. The counter-measure of raising grade and gutting the mine would bring on the end perhaps more rapidly, without having contributed much to the recovery of our national re-sources, nor to community welfare. The alternative is to keep costs under control."

The development in the perfection of mine-surveying instruments has been by no means rapid, as it has depended somewhat on the details of construction borrowed from astronomical and geodetic theodolites, largely on the restrictions laid down by mining companies and the prejudices of mine managers themselves, but more than all on the methods used in conducting surveys and the importance attached thereto. Mine-surveying, in some form or other, has been practiced from the very earliest times; but it has never kept pace with the other branches of surveying, or even with the art of mining itself, and cannot be recognized as an exact science until shortly before the beginning of this century. The works of Hero of Alexandria, who lived in the second century B.C., are still extant, and contain descriptions of a rectangular sighting-instrument, which he invented and called a diopter. His improvement upon this simple construction, which possibly he devised for use in the Greek mines for rough leveling-purposes and for laying out any angle, must be considered, says Hübner," as the origin of the highly perfected theodolite of to-day. Whether this instrument came into general use during the first centuries of the Christian era, is not recorded; in fact, no writer undertakes to tell how mine-surveying was conducted until 1556, in which year Agricola expounds the principles of mining and metallurgy in his De Re Metallica, devoting the entire fifth chapter to the practice of mine-surveying (see Fig. 1). Its great practical bearing lies in the exploitation of new regions; and nowhere are the disastrous results of ignoring it more vividly shown than in Western Australia, where the impoverishment of the ores, and their frequent transition from free-milling' to refractory character in depth (things, as a rule, neither anticipated nor ascertained by exploration beforehand), have brought many companies to ruin, or caused the loss of much money squandered on machinery adapted only to temporary conditions.

Acid rock drainage (ARD) is one of the most serious and potentially enduring environmental problems of the mining industry. High liability costs carried by many mining companies to cover potential obligations of ARD are a clear indication of the gravity of the problem. Unchecked, ARD can result in water quality impacts that could well be the industry's most significant financial and credibility risk. Effectively preventing acid drainage is a formidable challenge that requires the total commitment of the mining industry throughout the entire life-cycle of a mine. To achieve this commitment a strong business case for ARD prevention must be developed. This paper will address the elements of acid prevention and discuss their importance not only to the company but the entire industry as well. The International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) is an industry-led group created to help meet this challenge. In 2009, INAP published the GARD Guide (www.gardguide.com), a web-base best practices guide for the prevention of ARD [1]. In this paper, the GARD Guide will be used to identify preventative actions for all mining industry stakeholders. It will, in turn, be used to estimate ARD management and mitigation value accrued to the company from ARD prevention, which will be used in developing a business case for acid prevention.

Outotec has developed an operator training simulator (OTS) platformsuitable for various hydrometallurgical processes. The complete solution is run in the cloud, where virtual client instances can be managed on-demand. The aim is to build a generalizable model that produces coherent results even when operating outside of ideal parameters, allowing the operator to train in unsteady state conditions such as start-up and shutdown. Complex software products are commonly associated with significant development time and cost. Utilizing modular software architecture, only the control system and processmodel are tailored for theOTS,whereas modules such as user administration and cloud-based client machine spawning can be imported, shortening development time. A generic acidic pressure oxidation process (POX) operator training simulation consisting of feed preparation, autoclave, dual-stage flash evaporation and off-gas scrubbing is described. Process is simulated using Outotec HSC Sim 9 process simulator and controlled by Siemens Simatic PCS7 control system.

The Canahuire epithermal Au-Cu-Ag deposit in southern Peru is a complex and challenging deposit for metallurgical studies. It has issues of gold locking in sulfides and non-sulfides, deleterious elements and acid rock drainage (ARD). From scoping study to feasibility study, there has been considerable improvement in the understanding of the important geometallurgical characteristics that need to be measured and modelled. This paper presents the current understanding and the requirements to continue to provide optimal models for mining studies.Significant effort has been put into understanding the genesis of the deposit. Improved spatial and temporal understanding of lithology, alteration, structure and mineralogy was used to build a geological and alteration model of the deposit.Early metallurgical programs quantified the effect of head grade on process plant recoveries, but the geometallurgical and statistical analyses did not identify other physical characteristics that influence these recoveries. The studies improved the understanding of the nature of locked gold which can occur as minute inclusions (< 5 ¦m) in sulfides (primarily pyrite with lesser arsenopyrite, pyrite being 100 times more abundant than arsenopyrite) and gangue minerals (quartz and carbonates) as well as solid solution in arsenopyrite and pyrite.The presence of pyrite and the limited buffering capacity of waste rocks increases the potential ARD, which will require mitigation costs before, during and after operations. Waste rock ARD potential has been classified and incorporated in the geometallurgical model. The current classification of waste rock at Canahuire, using international classification standards, is limited due to the complexity of the deposit.Complex deposit metallurgy necessitates a complex process flow sheet, including flotation and cyanidation. Economic recovery will be constrained by the relationships between economic variable grade, other elements and mineralogy. These constraints and inter-relationships are difficult to establish throughout the deposit with a single test. A follow-up geometallurgical program is under investigation and will attempt, with the help of additional test work, to map areas of higher and lower recoveries. It is hoped that metallurgical response can be linked to measurable parameters other than head grade. "One of the contributing factors to the extreme cost escalation in the first decade of the 21st century was the increase in the amount and cost of engineering work that went into studies and projects. Various reasons for this were identified, including unsatisfactory productivity due to a shortage of experienced/qualified engineers, the increased complexity and infrastructure requirements of many projects due to location, metallurgy that is more challenging and increasing environmental and social requirements. These conditions often led to unsatisfactory project results in terms of cost and schedule blowouts and created a loss of confidence – both internally and externally – in the industry’s ability to complete projects on time and on budget.Technical fundamentals aside, the experience and effectiveness of project teams has had, and continues to have, a major impact on project cost, schedule and ramp-up to nameplate capacity and operating parameters. There are unfortunately too many examples of where project teams have not been as effective as they could or should have been, all to the ultimate detriment of the project.Using the authors’ extensive experience on both owner’s and engineer’s teams, this paper discusses some of the main reasons for suboptimal team, and hence project, performance and offers thoughts on how best to build and maintain project teams. The analysis and conclusions drawn are built around the Tuckman model of group development known as ‘forming-storming-norming-performing’, which was first proposed some 50 years ago. The relationships between Aboriginal Traditional Owners and mining companies have often been mired in dispute, particularly since the High Court Mabo decision and the Native Title Act of 1993. In the Pilbara region, Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) impacts the traditional country of 12 Aboriginal Traditional Owner/language groups. Over the past 12 years the company and the Traditional Owners have negotiated and settled several significant land use agreements including the Yandi Land Use Agreement over the Yandicoogina mine in 1997, between Hamersley Iron (now Rio Tinto Iron Ore) and three language groups û the Bunjima, Nyapaili and Innawonga people and the Eastern Guruma Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) of 2006. These substantive agreements are now being followed by a new generation of region wide ILUAs which are close to conclusion. Arising from these regional agreements is a new framework for engagement which has been informed by the implementation of the previous agreements in the Pilbara and across the Rio Tinto group of companies. They are driven by both a company desire to have a consistent approach to engaging with Traditional Owners and the Traditional Owners wanting to have a similarly transparent and consistent standard of performance by the company in implementing the agreements which can deliver improved employment, cultural heritage engagement and direct and indirect benefits for the life of mining by the company. During the past three years the growth in the Pilbara, Western Australia brought new opportunities with people flocking to the region for employment flowing from the mining boom. Housing was at a premium and FIFO (fly-in, fly-out employment arrangements) was developed as a method to manage the general growth and demand for skills. Despite the recent down turn in the world economy since September 2008, which has reduced demand for minerals, the Pilbara continues to enjoy high levels of employment and as a result there is still significant pressure on housing and services provision. Although there has been vast economic growth in the Pilbara not only by mining companies but also oil and gas companies, the 2006 census data indicated that the direct benefits of improved employment, business development and engagement in the mainstream economy continued to exclude Aboriginal people. Indigenous people constitute a significant proportion of the population in the Pilbara region, some 6000 people û currently 14 per cent of the population rising to 18 per cent by 2015 û yet they remain at the bottom of the socioeconomic scale. More than 40 years of mining has returned relatively little to this group of people who are the permanent residents of the region and are connected through their traditional culture to this country (Taylor and Scambary, 2005). Ensuring local Aboriginal participation in the mainstream economy has been a challenge for resource companies, Traditional Owners and local residents in the Pilbara. The case study explores the relationship between a mining company û Rio Tinto Iron Ore and the Traditional Owners of the Pilbara. It examines two projects that have been developed to engage Indigenous people in the development of their region and through regional representation and business development to build a sustainable future for themselves and their future generations and at the same time ensure social cohesion to support social licence to operate. The case study also examines the process that was followed by Rio Tinto Iron Ore and its operations in undertaking a regional agreement for land access, participation and the integration of local Indigenous people into their business and the local economy.
