THE INVESTIGATION of barrier pillars in the Southern field is part of the comprehensive study of the mine water problem in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania by the Federal Bureau of Mines (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18).4 Tim Southern field is in Carbon, Schuylkill, Dauphin, and Lebanon Counties, in eastern Pennsylvania; has an area of 200 square miles; is 70 miles long from Mauch Chunk on the east to the Susquehanna River on the west; and is 1 to 6 miles wide. In the Southern field are 37 underground water pools containing 37312 billion gallons of water (5). Most of these pools overflow to the surface because the barrier pillars controlling them are effective under existent, conditions. Abandonment of mines in the Southern field has resulted in the hooding of 34 percent of the field. The largest tonnage of reserves of anthracite lies in this field, where mining conditions are most difficult. Large reserves of anthra¬cite underlie the abandoned mine workings, and before a great part of these reserves can be developed and extracted, the abandoned workings must be unwatered and kept drained (5).

THE INVESTIGATION of barrier pillars in the Western Middle field is part of the comprehensive study of the mine-water problem in the anthra¬cite region of Pennsylvania by the Federal Bureau of Mines (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8,9,10,11,1,2,15,16).8 The Western Middle field is in Schuylkill, Columbia, and Northumberland Counties in eastern Pennsylvania. It has an area of 120 square miles, is 42 miles long from Delano on the east to Trevorton on the west, and is 2 to 5 miles wide. In the Western Middle field are 58 underground water pools containing 38 billion gallons of water (5). Some of the pools overflow to the surface, and the water from others seeps into adjacent mines through permeable barrier pillars separating them from abandoned mines. Several active mines are interconnected to workings in abandoned mines, which are partly filled with water. These mines are separated by barrier pillars that are considered effective only below the altitude of the connections. In some abandoned mines, pumping stations maintain the water at altitudes where the hydrostatic pressure against the barrier pillars is not excessive and does not endanger adjacent active mines. If water in these abandoned mines is allowed to rise to where it can overflow into the active mines, it must be pumped from the active mines at lower altitudes; this materially increases the cost of pumping. It is estimated that from 1944 to 1948 approximately 30 percent of the water pumped to the surface was from abandoned mines.

The implementation of new technology in mining can be likened to a paradoxical situation or dilemma, where, on one hand, major mining projects are not able to solicit investor funding unless it is proven that the business cases were developed using tried and tested mining methods. On the other hand, new and innovative mining technology and mining methods need first to demonstrate and prove themselves under real production conditions over a reasonable period before they can be considered bankable feasibility studies in the mining industry. This dilemma locks new mining technology investments in a continuous cycle of underinvestment. Technological innovations are particularly relevant to the mining industry, which deals with the challenges of depleting access to resources, requiring new solutions to remain sustainable and competitive. In the last decade, the mining industry has come to realise that technological innovations can directly contribute to its sustained competitive advantage (Sanchez, Hartlieb, 2020), helping to reduce costs, lessen environmental impact, increase production, and improve mineral recovery. While understanding barriers and drivers for technology adoption is important for the success of technology implementation efforts and the sustainability of the mining sector (Muduli et al., 2013), this paper suggests strategies to exit the dilemma, proposing a preliminary framework.

"This paper will describe the methods and the results of studies to integrate polymetallic nodule extractive metallurgy methods into existing and operating technologies or plants with the aim of reducing the capital cost of deep-sea mining challenges and to streamline the supply chain of raw materials where such opportunities exist (Moa Bay and others). It will also assess the possibility to carry out pre-industrial processing operations with productivity corresponding to pilot mining operation in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (5–10% of assumed annual production) with the use of existing facilities. The present study shows the results of high pressure acid leaching of polymetallic nodules (PN) mixed with laterite non-commercial ore. It also presents PN processing in the presence of ammoniacal tailings obtained from the Caron process. The experiments were carried out according to 24 full factorial design. The regression equations were determined for extractions of Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, Fe and Mn. The obtained results show that increasing temperature, the acid/ mineral ratio and the leaching time have a positive and significant effect on extraction of all the studied metals. However, increasing the tailings addition favors the extraction of the Co, Zn and Mn. The extraction of Fe diminishes, while the extraction of Ni is not affected. In the following conditions; 180 min, 260°C, 0.5 kg acid /kg minerals and 2.5 kg PN/kg tailing; the following extractions were achieved; 96% Ni, 90% Co, 97% Cu, 99.9% Zn, 43% Mn and 26% Fe."

Many thickener operations continue to be constrained by their ability to process consolidated underflows with high yield stress and associated rheological characteristics. To maximise separation efficiencies within a thickener operation the use of both engineering and reagents are always considered. BASF is developing a Novel Flocculant Technology (NFT), which combines both of these aspects to enhance the performance of the thickener operation, improving the areas of pumping efficiency, underflow density and throughput. The development progression through stages of laboratory scale batch test work to pilot scale dynamic testing has demonstrated the ability of BASF NFT to maintain effective flocculation performance whilst increasing the rate of underflow consolidation, and significantly reducing the associated underflow yield stress of the treated material. This paper will present application data through full scale dynamic testing conducted on a granite washing circuit to demonstrate the performance benefits that NFT offers to a thickener operation. Compared to the conventional flocculant treatment, within the operation parameters and conditions employed during the full scale trials, the NFT produced a reduction in underflow rheology (yield stress) of around 45 % relative to a given solids and improved the underflow consolidation by providing at least 20% relative higher underflow solids loading than the upper limit of the given typical thickener operation. Production of structural hot strip coils in yield strengths up to 700 MPa and higher is increasing worldwide. In addition to requiring higher strengths, structural designs require good formability, toughness and weldability. Toughness and formability come from optimization of ductility properties while weldability comes from lower carbon equivalent alloy designs. The key to the production of optimized cost effective hot strip produced structural coils is to create the correct balance of a proper alloy/processing design to create as fine and uniformly distributed cross sectional grain size as possible. In addition to the creation of the fine/uniformly distributed cross sectional grain size, the correct microstructure needs to be created. In the higher yield strength grades, not only does the grain size/distribution play a role but a proper understanding and control of microalloying precipitation kinetics is required. This paper will present various examples of hot strip alloy designs to produce cost effective hot strip structural coil in yield strengths up to 700 MPa with good ductility and weldability. In addition, steelmaking/casting parameters will be discussed to assure successful production. Optimized reheating, rolling and cooling parameters of these alloy designs will be introduced in an accompanying paper.

The, principle purpose of applying control to any process is to improve -its profitability. Even when considering the impact of a plant on its surrounding ecology this is still, true, since the sanctions felt most immediately from violations of the regulations are the economic penalties or fines which result. 'Economic performance can be improved within a plant in several ways. Steps can be taken to cut the cost or quantity of resources (power, water, steam, reagents) consumed per ton of throughput. Alternatively the operation of the plant can be changed so as to increase product yield per ton of throughput. Or the cost of labor and plant overhead per ton of product can be reduced by raising the total 'throughput, assuming-that the increased amount of product can be sold for the same unit price. In designing a program to improve plant performance, all three routes should be borne in mind. To maximize the return on investment over a longer period, it is also desirable to set up a comprehensive plan of improvement, equipment being specified at each step in the implementation so as to ensure that it fits in with later requirements later implementation being either by means of modular additions or by having the necessary interfaces built into the original equipment. It is much cheaper in the long run to buy features which have been factory-installed, than to have to make provision for their later addition in the field. This paper examines some ways of improving plant performance by the application of various process control techniques using both analog and digital con¬trol equipment. A general philosophy of application is suggested and specific examples described.

Refractory gold concentrates often contain submicroscopic gold that is encapsulated within the crystal matrix of iron sulfide minerals, such as pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite. To recover the gold, the host mineral must generally be broken down chemically by oxidative processes, such as roasting, pressure oxidation or bacterial leaching, which expose the gold for subsequent recovery by leaching in cyanide solution. The focus of attention in these pretreatment processes is usually the oxidation of the sulfides to elemental sulfur, sulfur dioxide gas or sulfate ions. Less attention is paid to the deportment of iron and the changes in its oxidation state, although this can have a profound effect on gold and silver liberation, as well as downstream operating costs. Iron sulfide minerals break down completely during pressure oxidation, and dissolve in the sulfuric acid solution that is gener-ated from oxidation of the sulfides. This dissolution liberates the tiny gold particles that were originally trapped in the sulfide crystals, and gold recovery during subsequent cyanidation is usually very high (>95%). Iron goes into solution in the oxidation process, initially as ferrous sulfate, but this compound is rapidly oxidized to ferric sulfate, which then hydrolyzes and reprecipitates. The form of the precipitate varies depending on the operating conditions in the autoclave and the presence of certain metal cations. When the acidity in the autoclave is quite low (<20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is high (>200°C), the formation of hematite is favored. When the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is relatively low (160 to 200°C), the formation of basic iron sulfate is favored. If the ore or the leach solution contains significant levels of certain cations (such as Na+, K+, NH4+, Ag+ or Pb2+) and the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4), jarosite compounds are favored. Hematite is the desired iron product in the autoclave discharge, for both metallurgical and environmental reasons, but it is difficult to operate an autoclave under the conditions required for effective liberation of gold without converting some of the iron to basic iron sulfate and/or jarosite. These compounds fall into a category of iron compounds known generically as iron hydroxy sulfates, all of which can cause significant processing and environmental problems in the downstream gold process. This paper deals specifically with basic iron sulfate: the conditions under which it is formed in an autoclave, the problems that are caused by its presence in the feed to a cyanidation plant and possible remedial strategies that can be adopted, both in the autoclave and downstream.

THE advances in basic open-hearth practice which have occurred during the past decade, have been principally in the direction of the physical development of larger units, decreased fuel consumption and increased length of furnace campaigns. However gratifying the economies which have resulted from these improvements are, it must be granted that like advances in chemical, physical-chemical and metallurgical knowledge pertaining to open-hearth practice would have added greatly to these already attained reductions in costs and it is the purpose of this paper to stimulate the discussion and study of these phases of cooperation and their relation to ingot yields. DEFINITION AND CALCULATION OF LOSSES In discussing basic open-hearth yields, the writer refers to the ingot yields obtained in the process of converting pig iron, scrap and ore to steel. In this conversion some scrap is produced. The difference between the total weight of ingots and scrap produced and the original metallic charge, constitutes the loss. Basic open-hearth yields vary considerably, and while some of the divergencies can be explained metal-lurgically because of differences in slag analysis, proportion of pig charges, and character of steel made, there often remain differences that apparently do not readily disclose themselves. In reconciling yields by the usual accepted methods of calculation, one is often forced to evaluate large losses as "unaccounted for." Such a system is prone to accept these large losses as inherent to the operation and not susceptible of appraisement and correction. It is obvious that if the ingot yield, plus the scrap recovered subtracted from 100 per cent. determines the loss, a drop in yield may increase the loss or the scrap, and both contribute to a monetary loss. To be sure, one can subdivide these unaccounted for losses into various components, such as metallics in slag, free Fe in slag, spillage, etc., and thereby reduce the amount of losses considered as "unaccounted for." If empirical methods could indicate with some degree of accuracy all losses, however slight, the undetermined losses become appreciably smaller and resultant calculations will check actual

"Safe mine closure is an important step in the mining lifecycle. Plans for safe and efficient closure should begin at the inception of mining. Ideally, closure occurs when the reserve has been depleted. However, when the abandonment of a mine occurs prior to the depletion of the reserve, several problems arise which need to be treated. This situation occurred at Verdinho Mine, located in the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. Verdinho Mine is a coal mine that operated for more than 40 years without had backfill technologies applied. Soon before the exhaustion of the reserves, it was abandoned by the owners without proper closure. As a result, the Federal Public Ministry filed a public civil action to promote proper closure. Several parties are currently involved, including the National Department of Mineral Production (DNPM), the mining regulator of the Brazilian Government. To meet the judicial determination, a cooperation agreement was initiated between DNPM and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) to identify and to monitor parameters which could result hazard due flooding mine, to model the various conditions to minimize the impact of flooding caused by total abandonment. Many processes must be planned and planned early in mining operations, and these processes must be performed over the life of the mine. Financial resources must be guaranteed by a specific fund fueled by operating revenues. When these resources are not properly employed, costs and technical difficulties prevent proper closure progress. If the removal of subsoil equipment, treatment and control of groundwater, regeneration of the surface, and closure of openings are not done correctly, there can be environmental, social, and stability impacts over time. To avoid this in the future, a detailed study is being performed at the Verdinho Underground Coal Mine on how to appropriately implement mine closure and monitoring procedures. This study is being conducted in response to a lawsuit filed by the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office. INTRODUCTION The nature of the Mining Industry is such that all mining is a temporary activity, where the operational life of a mine is defined by the final project scope. The operating life of a mine lasts from a few years to several decades. Mine closures occur once the mineral resource at a working mine is exhausted, or operations are no longer profitable. Mine closure plans are required by most regulatory agencies worldwide, such as the Mineral Production National Department (DNPM) in Brazil."

"This paper proposed a new method of Mg and Cl2 circulating for titanium sponge production by direct pyrolysis and thermal reduction process. Effects of pyrolysis temperature, pyrolysis time and partial pressure of oxygen on pyrolysis efficiency were researched, and the crystallite structural transformation of MgO productions at different pyrolysis temperature and time were analyzed by XRD. The experimental results indicates that the pyrolysis temperature and time effects the pyrolysis efficiency obviously, and the reasonable pyrolysis conditions by using MgCl2 in molten state are as follows: the pyrolysis temperature is 1100?, pyrolysis time is 60min and the partial pressure of oxygen is 100%, the pyrolysis efficiency get above 95% at this conditions. The dynamic analysis of molten magnesium chloride pyrolysis reaction shows that, as a chemical reaction process control, the response of the apparent activation energy Ea=70.4 kJ/mol.IntroductionTitanium is a young metal, it is applied in industrial until the Second World War. It is 160 years from the discovery of titanium to the industrial production of ductility titanium by magnesium reduction method in the United States in 1948. As a new kind of metal, titanium and titanium material are better than the traditional metal materials in mechanical properties, heat resistance and thermal conductivity. Titanium is a kind of landmark structure and function material, which is called “space metal”, “Marine metal”, “Intelligent metal” [1-3]. Although the study of new methods of titanium melting get more at present, Kroll method and Hunter method are really applied to industrial production methods for titanium smelting, and Hunter method is already discontinued because of costs at present. The core technology in Kroll method of sponge titanium production process can be ome down to two circulation, namely the cycle of magnesium and chlorine in preparation-process of titanium sponge. In the traditional Kroll method, the cycle is realized through magnesium chloride which is produced by the electrolytic magnesium reduction process in hot molten state. But because investment of equipment for electrolysis method is too high, this method has not been used by most titanium sponge production enterprise in China. At present most titanium sponge production enterprise in China produce titanium sponge by the outsourcing of titanium tetrachloride, but the main disadvantage of this method is that the by-product of magnesium chloride is difficult to deal with."

Despite the importance and usefulness of basicity in metallurgical slags, the optimum quantitative expression of it has remained elusive, partly due to the fact that the precise concept of basicity has not been properly clarified. The two basic approaches to the concept of basicity are the Lux-Flood, which perceives basicity in terms of the activity of the free oxide ion, a O2- , and the Lewis, which perceives basicity in terms of the ability to donate negative charge. The former has been almost universally adopted in the area of metallurgical slags, while the latter has been increasingly accepted in the field of glass chemistry. In this paper, some difficulties of the Lux-Flood approach are pointed out, including the need for indirect measures of a O2- , which have proliferated in recent years. Accordingly, it is suggested that the Lewis approach has a good deal to commend it, and that the quantification of it in terms of optical basicity is the best measure of basicity available, which should therefore be more widely applied in metallurgical slags than it currently is. The fact that there are intrinsic problems in evaluating the optical basicities for the transition metal oxides is acknowledged, and a new scale is recommended. These companies are Kaiser, Reynolds, Alcoa, and Alcan, and the Agreements came into effect on February 1, 1980. One of the results of these new Agreements is the Acquisition of all company-owned bauxite lands by the Government and the rationalization of bauxite reserves.

The Environment Weipa is located at 12° south latitude on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland, Australia. The climate is tropical with most of the 1 600 mm. average annual rainfall falling between November and March. During the short winter months (May/ August) the weather is clear and pleasant, with temperatures seldom exceeding 27°C.Throughout the remainder of the year, conditions are frequently oppressive due to consistent high ambient temperatures accompanied by high humidity. The terrain is of low relief, and generally not more than 6 to 10m. above mean sea level adjacent to the coast. The coastline features numerous short estuaries which discharge run-off from the heavy rains collected by creeks and rivers. The whole area is covered by an open forest, the predominant species of which is Eucalyptus tetradonta. These eucalypts have only limited commercial value and are heavily infested with termites. Despite the fact that Weipa is close to the location of the first reported sighting of the Australian coastline by a European (William Janz - 1606), it remains very isolated. There is no developed road or rail connection to centres of population, so that transport of practically all products, personnel and materials to and from Weipa is by sea and air. In an approach to the complicated study of bauxite from Les Baux de Provence it is necessary to consider the paleogeographical context of all the bauxites in southern France. These bauxites are of Karstic type, belonging to a metallogenic area extending from the Pyrenees Mountains to the Alpine Massif. Within this area each deposit does not always correspond to the same geological period. There are differing opinions regarding the origin of Karstic-type bauxite and a discussion of these various theories is beyond the scope of this paper. Bauxite of Les Baux, in Provence, was discovered in 1821 by the chemist, Berthier, near this picturesque village located in the region of Arles. It is Les Baux from which the name of bauxite originates. For a long time this bauxite was of no interest because of high silica &apos;and mediocre alumina content. Besides, the calcium carbonate content is somewhat high and is one of the main characteristics of Les Baux bauxite. The problem of exploration of the Les Baux deposit has been to prospect minable zones according to traditional norms where silica and carbonate are low.

CONSIDERABLE waste of oil and grease in lubricating motors and other machinery results from the use of bearings that are not totally enclosed. There is also the likelihood of damage to the bearing through the accidental introduction of grit or dust both in the oiling process and after, unless the cover is entirely dustproof. With the ordinary sleeve bearing that is only partly enclosed, it is generally easier for a careless attendant to cause trouble through neglect than with the ball bearing type, which from its design, must be totally enclosed to give effective service, and needs a minimum of attention. At one of the large mining companies which has taken a leading part in reducing unit costs and pioneering new developments in mining machinery, ball bearings have been gradually supplanting the conventional type of sleeve bearings on many of their motors, centrifugal pumps, and other machines in the mines. This innovation is not recent, as substitution of ball bearings on mine motors was first tried out by this company in 1909. Since then an increasing number of such bearings have been put in. They are now favored because of increased operating efficiency and reduction in lubrication costs.

Evans Industries, Inc., a management coal consultant and company was assigned to evaluate National Steel Company&apos;s coal properties in Knott and Floyd Counties, Kentucky. The results of evaluation showed large reserves of good quality, high volatile metallurgical coal contained in the Elkhorn coal beds and resulted in the formation of Beaver Creek Consolidated Coal Company. Based on results of the exploration and feasibility work, the decision was to install a coal nine, preparation plant and related facilities having a production capacity of one&apos; and three quarter million tons per year with Evans Industries acting as Beaver Creek&apos;s management company. The recoverable tonnage assigned to the Stinson Mine is approximately forty-five million tons. This paper discusses the general arrangement of storage, conveying, loading, refuse disposal facilities and the flow sheet of the preparation plant developed by engineers of Heyl & Patterson, Inc., and Evans Industries, Inc., with emphasis on practical flexibility, sulfur reduction in all circuits, and high product yield with the minimum amount of selective mining, Three and one-half miles of railroad have been built by the Chesepeake & Ohio Railroad to service this mine.

Bechtel&apos;s BEMSIM computer program is a useful tool for solvent extraction-electrowinning plant design optimization. Its power (up to 90 stream components, 240 process streams, 180 process steps) has been applied to investigate floweheet configurations in order to perform basic engineering, sizing of plant equipment and to optimize performance of commercial-size copper plants. Flowsheet variations presented include series, parallel and series-parallel extraction stages, while heat balances simulate operations in summer and extreme winter conditions. The BEMSIM program has also been applied to nickel-cobalt, gold and manganese extraction.
