Strong demand for copper in developing nations such as China and India, plus the additional demand for industrial minerals to supply the Arizona construction market, brought about a record-setting year for the state?s mining industry. The value of Arizona?s copper production set a new high of $5.5 billion and pushed the total value of mineral production to $7.58 billion. This was also a record. As it has for many years, Arizona ranked first in nonfuel mineral production in the U.S. In addition to leading the nation in copper, Arizona ranked in the top five in molybdenum, sand and gravel, gemstones, perlite, silver, zeolites and pumice. Generally strong and rising prices, especially toward year?s end, fostered a bullish atmosphere that encouraged significant levels of acquisition and exploration. This activity has spread beyond the normal commodities to include some, such as manganese and fluorspar, that have not been mined in Arizona for decades.

This paper describes the design and construction of a 22.86 m (75 ft) long jacked tunnel, which was successfully installed, despite difficult mixed face conditions at Metro-North’s Westport Station, in Connecticut in the fall of 2003. The tunnel utilized what is believed to be, the first application of a steel grillage system within the United States. This grillage was installed before the jacking started and allowed the tunnel to be jacked under four live railway tracks, which included the Acela high speed line, without affecting train operations. The clearance between the top of the tunnel and the rails was only 0.9 m (3 ft).

Since the promulgation of the first Federal Asbestos Standard by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 1972, other federal agencies have modified the standard to better carry on their own unique missions. The instruments used to identify and measure asbestos, the sampling protocol, and the criteria used to define asbestos, have been modified to some degree. The Mine Safety and Health Administration regulates and controls asbestos dust in the mining and mineral commodity industries. However, crushed stone and processed ores contain mineral fragments that are frequently difficult to distinguish from asbestos. Mineral nomenclature, instruments for particle analysis, and sampling strategy must be accommodated to some degree to make asbestos control workable and meaningful. Precedent in other agencies has made consideration of these changes possible. Newly identified amphibole asbestos minerals have further complicated the agency?s regulatory charge. Changes in its Asbestos Standard are now being considered. Crushed taconite ore in the Eastern Mesabi highlights many of these issues. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. Underground mine designs typically try to avoid extraction beneath streams and rivers of any significant size, especially when the overburden rock thickness between the stream bed and the mine is thin. Potential issues with mining beneath streams include excessive groundwater inflow to the mine; weak ground (roof, floor, and pillar) conditions; horizontal stress effects; as well as stream loss and other potential adverse environmental effects. However, there are times when crossing beneath a stream or river is necessary to move into a new area of mineral reserve without creating additional mine access points from the ground surface. Often, stream crossings are completed without thorough assessment, potentially resulting in increased costs, decreased safety, and, in some cases, failure to advance the mine. Selection of the most favorable location(s) to cross the stream must account for numerous factors and the associated assessment often requires a multidisciplinary approach. Stream crossing investigations often require geological, hydrogeological, geotechnical, and geophysical expertise. Phases of stream crossing investigations include desktop evaluation of maps and aerial photography, stream bed observations, drilling, detailed rock core logging, downhole geophysical surveying, hydraulic conductivity testing (packer testing), geotechnical laboratory testing, assessment, and reporting. The deliverables from a stream crossing assessment typically include geological, geotechnical, and hydrogeological characterization of potential stream crossing locations; classification of favorable and unfavorable crossing locations; recommendations for entry design and pillar sizing; and recommendations for if, and how, to conduct pre-grouting activities. Examples of technical aspects of data collection and assessment are provided based on decades of industry experience conducting stream crossing assessments in various underground mining scenarios.

The methodology used to obtain fly ash subsamples of different sizes is generally based on wet or dry sieving methods. However, the worth of such methods is not certain if the methodology applied is not mentioned in the analytical procedure. After performing a fly ash mechanical dry sieving, the authors compared those results with the ones obtained by laser diffraction on the same samples and found unacceptable discrepancies. A preliminary study of a wet sieving analysis carried out on an economizer fly ash sample showed that this method was more effective than the dry sieving. The importance of standardizing the way samples are handled, pretreated and presented to the instrument of analysis are suggested and interlaboratory reproducibility trials are needed to create a common standard methodology to obtain large amounts of fly ash size fraction subsamples.

Flotation’s earliest patent was issued in 1860. However, the process was first applied commercially in Australia until 1904, and in Montana in 1911. Major advances followed both in reagent treatment and in cell design, with resulting process improvements. Mechanical cells have seen the widest use and with the major increases in plant capacities (Fig. 1) their volumes have also increased (Fig. 2). In 1991, the principal use for the process was to produce copper concentrates for smelting. It was applied to 243 Mt (268 million st) of copper ore. The total of all ores floated that year was 426 Mt (470million st). In 1997, US mines produced 257 Mt (284 million st) of copper ores for flotation, yielding1.75 Mt (1.94 million st) of copper.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for 2008 draws upon available information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry, and presents analyses of exploration activities by the mineral industry based upon these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for 2008: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia (Metals Economics Group, 2008a, b), and 2) information on regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2008 and compiled by the USGS. The MEG information summarizes planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2008, primarily for precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver) and base metals (copper, lead, nickel and zinc). MEG includes information on additional mineral commodities only where it is available. Information on uranium exploration was included in the MEG overview for the first time in 2007, although this information was not included in the USGS analysis. The MEG survey methodology was changed in 1999 to include companies with exploration budgets between $100,000 and $2.9 million, as well as those companies included in prior studies whose anticipated budgets were above $2.9 million. MEG estimates that its post-1999 surveys cover at least 90 percent of world nonferrous nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 2008 survey is reported by MEG to cover an estimated 95 percent. Companies that chose not to participate in the MEG study, private companies that do not publish data, and government-funded exploration activities make up the majority of the remaining 5 percent. MEG included 91 more companies in its 2008 survey than it did in 2007 USGS compilations of site data described here primarily include nonfuel minerals, with an emphasis on base metals, diamond and precious metals. Analyses are based on information provided by USGS mineral commodity and country specialists and by other USGS scientists, as well as industry contacts and trade journals.

Mountain Top Removal (MTR) mining started in West Virginia nearly thirty years ago. This surface mining method can extract multiple coal seams as thin as a few inches thick with total recovery and minimum rock dilution in very steep mountainous terrain. It is highly efficient even if coal seams are in close proximity and small in aerial extent. Consequently, MTR has been widely used in the Central Appalachian Coalfield (mainly Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia) for the past thirty years with great success. In that respect, there has been no demand for research and little scientific research has been performed to investigate its impacts on the surroundings in the history of MTR mining. However, in the past two years the debate over the MTR mining has grown quickly and in times become very intensely. This paper describes chronologically the issues raised by various parties, legal actions, its impacts on mining permit application and research projects developed to address the issues.

A large-diameter road tunnel will cross beneath the strait in Istanbul and expand the infrastructure bottleneck between Europe and Asia. The technical planning of the tunneling operations poses complex challenges. Therefore, the construction consortium ordered a specially adapted tunnel boring machine (TBM) from Herrenknecht. The 13.6-m (44.6-ft) machine, a Mixshield, was completed in early July 2013 in Schwanau, Germany. To get from the European to the Asian side of Istanbul, people and goods have to cross the Bosporus Straits. So far, two road bridges as well as ferries provide the only transport link between the two parts of the city and the two continents. The tense traffic situation for the nearly 14 million residents of the city and for international transit traffic should be improved considerably thanks to the construction of a new road tunnel under the Bosporus. ?The project is certainly one of the most challenging tunneling operations currently being addressed in the world,? said Herrenknecht project manager Georg Schleer. The route of the ?Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project? runs around 100 m (330 ft) below sea level at its deepest point. The interior diameter of the tunnel will be 12 m (40 ft) so that two lanes in each direction can be accommodated. They will extend one above the other on two levels. 3.34 km (2.1 miles) of the tunnel with a total length of 5.4 km (3.3 miles) are being created by a 13.6-m- (44.6-ft-) diameter Herrenknecht TBM that will begin its underground mission from a launch shaft on the Asian side.

The health of the industrial minerals industry appears to be improving year by year. In fact, preliminary information suggests that only three commodities (asbestos, bromine, and sulfur-other) failed to show a production gain in 1984 over 1983. In 1983, 10 commodities failed to post gains and six remained constant. The total value of industrial mineral production in 1984 was $16.7 billion, up $1.4 billion from 1983. Cement, clays, gypsum, and crushed stone production increased. Since these are used in housing and construction, this suggests these industries are moving out of their recent doldrums. Barite and clay production also improved in 1984. Local US barite production, however, still has a long way to go to attain the 1981 high of 2.6 Mt (2.9 million st). Barite imports remain high. But they are not as high as the 1982 importation of 2 Mt (2.3 million st). Bentonite production in 1984 increased 20% in volume and 25% in value over the previous year. This suggests improvement in the drilling industry and an increase in demand for iron ore pelletizing grades. All in all, the industrial mineral industry is alive and well. And it shows signs of great improvement in the next few years. The US Geological Survey (USGS) is currently conducting a coal resource assessment of the coalbeds and zones that are projected to provide the bulk of the nation’s resources for the next few decades. The Pittsburgh and Upper Freeport coals are the first two beds in the northern and central Appalachian basin region to undergo fully digital coal assessments. The bed-specific assessments are being carried out in partnership with the state geologic surveys of West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Comprehensive stratigraphic and geochemical databases have been developed for both of the beds. The extent of the bed with mined areas, structure contour, isopach, and overburden thickness maps for the Pittsburgh coal bed have been released as USGS open-file reports.

"Mining conditions in underground coal mines are dictated by the environment in which the coal seams were geologically deposited. Depositional features can change rapidly, significantly affecting mining conditions. Mine geologists understand factors affecting mining conditions, predict future conditions, and provide guidance to mine management. A case study demonstrates how a mine in Appalachia merged an understanding of depositional environments with mining conditions and drilling data to make informed decisions as the mine encountered geologic anomalies. The assessment included drilling, mapping of geologic hazards and mine productivity, and creation of a conceptual depositional model. Metallurgical coal quality and clean tons per foot served as incentives for continued advance. Mining in the south was historically favorable, with good production and advance rates. As mining advanced north, changing geologic conditions caused the upper seam split to abruptly disappear. The mine ramped down into the lower seam split. Mining in the north area encountered unfavorable conditions, including transition roof, “horsebacks,” sandstone intrusions, roof rolls, and bony floor, resulting in low rates of mining advance. The mine geologist characterized the features and created a predictive model for future mining. Most of the adverse conditions were attributed to the coal in the north being part of an incised, transgressive valley fill environment, as compared to the favorable conditions in the south resulting from a floodplain depositional environment. Geologic conditions, low productivity, and unfavorable future predicted conditions in the north ultimately resulted in mine closure and reallocation of resources to a new mine with better forecasted conditions.INTRODUCTIONThe role of a geologist in assisting coal mining operations to understand and predict the impact of varying geological factors on mining productivity is a critical one, especially when management decisions must be made about the future prospects of a mine operating in difficult conditions. Chase, Newman, and Rusnak (2006) provide a very thorough discussion of the evolution of the role of the coal mine geologist and emphasizes the importance of understanding geology with regard to mine management decisions. Using actual mining performance data to determine which geologic factors are the most critical for mining is a powerful tool for making informed mine management decisions. For example, Nelson, Mullennex, and Miller (1988) provide a case study of analyzing the geologic factors impacting productivity of a Kentucky longwall mine to predict future mining conditions for the operation. In that case, the difficult geologic factors for longwall mining were prevalent across much of the remaining permit area and, in response, mine management converted the operation from a longwall operation to a continuous miner (CM) operation to better adapt to the geology. In another example, Keim and Miller (1999) evaluated geologic conditions impacting a West Virginia longwall mine. In both examples, significant geotechnical and geological information was available, including the opportunity to compare predicted mining conditions against actual conditions as mining progressed. Numerous examples of advanced Geologic Hazard Mapping (GHM) methodologies have come from government agencies and academia. For example, development of the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) system (Molinda and Mark, 1994) provided a standard means for geologists and engineers to communicate quantitatively with regard to mine roof conditions, and the introduction of the Stability Mapping System (SMS) provided an efficient means for analyzing numerous factors affecting coal mine stability (Wang and Heasley, 2005)."

The Stress Control Method of mine design provides enhanced engineering control over the behavior of underground structures in comparison to conventional mine design methods. The same Method can be applied to achieve design control of surface subsidence. The basic mechanism relating undergroued deformation and surface subsidence is disclosed by mine simulations, using the REM (Rheological Element Method) computer code, whose predictions have been validated by field measurements. The key components of the underlying mechanism of surface subsidence have been shown to be the stress envelopes formed in the process of underground excavation. It has also been demonstrated that significant control of surface subsidence can be achieved by designing the geometry and timing of underground excavation to regulate the formation of stress envelopes. A field example is given in this paper to illustrate this application of the Stress Control Method.

Sustaining the region?s mobility needs, achieving projected economic growth, and maintain Midtown Manhattan as a center of regional, national and global importance has led to continued investment in commuter rail and transit infrastructure in New York City and resulted in design and construction of large underground caverns. The current plans for stations in Manhattan include New York Penn Station Expansion (NYPSE) caverns for Trans Hudson Express (THE) Tunnel Project for New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Long Island Railroad (MTACC/LIRR) twin caverns for East Side Access (ESA) Project, and station caverns of the No. 7 Line Subway Extension Project and Second Avenue Subway Project for Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction/New York City Transit (MTACC/NYCT). This paper provides a general overview of these large caverns now in design or construction in Manhattan, the area?s geologic setting, the geotechnical factors considered and approaches commonly applied for cavern design.

Svedala started a development program in 1997 to develop a process to convert waste tires into valuable commodities. A review of numerous approaches revealed short-comings in the various approaches either process, mechanical, combination of factors, or trying to emphasis the production of low value products. A market study revealed that a process that could produce a good grade of carbon black would be economically feasible. This paper discusses the laboratory and pilot plant development and commercial plant design.

The St. Cloud Mining Company extracts clinoptilolite about 6.5 km south of Winston, Sierra County, New Mexico. Production is about 18,000 mt/year. Natural zeolites are good adsorbents for positively charged solutes such as ammonium. St. Cloud’s production is used in animal hygiene, animal feed, environmental mitigation, air and water filtration, and other applications. By a simple chemical treatment with a surfactant, zeolites can also be modified to adsorb negatively charged solutes such as nitrate and arsentate, and neutral organics such as solvents and fuel components. These surfactant-modified zeolites are used in treating groundwater contamination, stormwater runoff, and solvent vapors from painting operations.

Spray-on ground support membranes (GSM) or thin support liners hold today perhaps as much potential to impact underground (u/g) ground support operations as dry and later wet-mix shotcrete when introduced to mining in the latter part of the 20th century. This emerging technology has come a long way from the time the first single component experimental coatings were tested in the mid-1980s. Due to a number of factors, including occupational health risk and mine safety regulations, it has taken quite some time for the development of non-hazardous membrane products. However, at this junction most existing u/g mines that employ more conventional forms of ground support could benefit from evaluating GSM technology as a means of improving safety and the bottom line. The same is especially true for future mine developments. This paper describes Master Builders Inc.’s CS1251 GSM product and its implementation. It discusses the situations in which GSM may replace other forms of ground support. Furthermore, it evaluates GSM costs & safety issues and looks at present applications and the potentially bright future of this technology.

An improved experimental procedure to measure contact angle has been consolidated with coal surface preparation involving polishing with abrasive paper, alumina powder, and a cloth, followed by ultrasonic and mechanical cleaning. Specifically, the captive-bubble measuring technique has been compared with the sessile-drop technique and the former has been recommended for the examination of the hydrophobic properties of coal surfaces. Results of the research program, which is currently under way, on the examination of the effect of the nature, amount, size, and distribution of mineral inclusions in coal, on its wettability are briefly reviewed.

The Eskay Creek Mine is a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia. The mine started operations in late1994. For the first three years, ore was crushed to -50 mm(-2 in.), blended to satisfy smelter terms and shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Preliminary evaluations indicated that a complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. So markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations began at a production rate of 300 t/d (330stpd).

The upgrading project for two hydropower plants in Slovenia, Europe, requires two new pressure tunnels: Plave II (5.9 km Flysch) and Doblar II (3.6 km Limestone). It is the worldwide largest application of the Double-Shield TBM technology combined with an extremely thin-walled monoshell honeycomb lining system. The first drive has been completed by end of June 2000 achieving best performances of 50m/d and almost 1,100m/mth. In September 2000 the TBM started the second tunnel without any required adjustments due to geological or other reasons. Another 52m/d have been bored already within one production day of two 8 h shifts achieving a maximum penetration rate of more than 6m/h. The completion of the Doblar drive can be expected by February 2001.
